ABSTRACT

The use of nitrogen (N) in pastoral ecosystems leads to increased productivity, as it allows the plant to elongate its leaves and, therefore, grazing herbivores harvest the green leaves. However, there are very volatile N sources, which can be replaced by ammonium nitrate, which is less volatile and less dependent on the application in rainy days. The treatments are compound of Marandu palisade grass pastures managed under continuous stocking at a canopy height of 25 cm, with different levels of N fertilizer: 0, 75, and 150 kg ha-1year-1, as ammonium nitrate (32% of N), with four replicates (pastures) in a completely randomized design. Nitrogen uptake (54.9, 96.5, 113.8 kg N ha-1) and N nutrition index (0.67, 0.98, 1.15) were different between N level, respectively, 0, 75 and 150 kg ha-1 year-1. The N recovery (58.3, 40.9 %) differed between 75 and 150 kg ha-1 year-1, respectively. The dose of 75 kg N kg ha-1 year-1 results in better N utilization, while the dose of 150 kg N ha-1 year-1 enables greater stocking rate; therefore, requiring less grazing area.

ABSTRACT

Foliar N-fertilization (FNf) has emerged as a promising approach to synchronize plant nitrogen (N) demands and application timing, reducing the N losses to the environment associated with traditional soil-based fertilization methods. However, limited information exists regarding the effectiveness of FNf in sugarcane. This study aimed to optimize FNf in sugarcane by evaluating N-fertilizer recovery by the plant (NRP) and assessing potential toxicity effects. Four sugarcane genotypes were subjected to FNf using 15 N-urea at five nitrogen concentrations. NRP was assessed at five time points for roots, stalk, old leaves, 15 N-urea-fertilized leaves (15 NL), and unexpanded leaves (UEL). Leaf scorching, indicating FNf toxicity, was analyzed using morpho-anatomical and histochemical techniques. The results showed that FNf promoted high NRP, with an average recovery of 62.3%. Surprisingly, the redistribution of 15 N-urea did not follow the nitrogen uptake rate by sugarcane leaves, with an average of 41.3% of the total-NRP. The stalk emerged as the primary sink for 15 N-urea, followed by the UEL. Genotypes differed in the leaf scorching intensity, which increased with higher concentration of 15 N-urea. Genotypes also differed in the 15 N-urea uptake rate, down-regulated by the N content in the 15 NL. These findings emphasize that by carefully choosing the appropriate genotype and nitrogen concentration, FNf can significantly enhance N-fertilizer uptake, resulting in potential environmental and economic benefits.

ABSTRACT

The data presented in this paper are related to the research article "Ammonia recovery from food waste digestate using solar heat-assisted stripping-absorption" [1]. The raw and filtered data are associated to daily monitoring of NH4 concentration of food waste digestate, pH of digestate and absorption solution and temperature of food waste digestate throughout experiments at different conditions. In addition, data of temperature monitoring in different points of solar-heat assisted stripping-absorption device are presented. The data could help further studies aiming to improve this system. The detailed data of these experiments could help to improve the performance and to reduce costs of nitrogen recovery from digestate using stripping-absorption technology.

ABSTRACT

Nitrogen fertilization permits to increase the carrying capacity of pastures; however, the use of high doses can have negative effects on the growth of forage grasses. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of increasing nitrogen doses on the morphogenic and structural characteristics, biomass accumulation, and nitrogen conversion and recovery efficiencies of Megathyrsus maximus cv. BRS Zuri. Five nitrogen doses (0, 200, 400, 600 and 800 kg of nitrogen/ha) were tested in a randomized block design with four replicates. A quadratic effect was observed for elongation rate, leaf appearance rate, leaf lifetime, and phyllochron. There was an increase in the number of tillers and in the production of dry matter when the plants were submitted to fertilization; however, both the efficiency of nitrogen use and the apparent recovery of nitrogen decreased linearly with increasing nitrogen level. The use of nitrogen fertilizer improved the morphogenic characteristics, except for stalk elongation rate and leaf senescence rate, which remained stable. Nitrogen fertilization accelerates the growth rates of Megathyrsus maximus cv. BRS Zuri. The maximum responses in the morphogenic variables number of live and total leaves per tiller are obtained with doses close to 500 kg/ha, while doses ranging from 600 to 647 kg/ha provide a larger leaf size per tiller, a higher tiller population density, and higher dry matter production. Nitrogen utilization and recovery efficiencies decrease with increasing nitrogen doses.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The leachate is a type of effluent from landfills containing high concentrations of ammonia, even after normal treatment procedures are applied. Due to its characteristic, the leachate can adversely impact the environment and public health. Leachate treatment seeks to remove a series of compounds with adverse characteristics present in this type of effluent. Ammonia nitrogen is the main problem, easily observed in concentrations near 2000 mg/L. The effluents with high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen can stimulate the growth of algae, reduce the dissolved oxygen in rivers, and cause toxicity on the aquatic biota, even in low concentrations. Many research for treatment methods aiming to remove this compound, specifically, have been increasingly deeper, mainly by physical-chemical processes. This study aimed to test the process of air stripping in a closed system and pilot scale, applied on leachate treatment of landfills, to remove the high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen and its recovery by the chemical absorption of ammonia on phosphoric acid, resulting in a product with potential application as agricultural fertilizer, the ammonia phosphate. The leachate flows used were 9, 18, 20, and 40 L/h, and the air flows were 1800 and 3600 L/h. Calcium carbonate (standard grade), commercial hydrated lime (CHL), and sodium hydroxide (standard grade) were used for pH adjustments. To the ammonia recovery, three flasks were used with 2.5 L of a phosphoric acid solution of 0.12 and 0.24 mol/L. The air stripping tower removed an average of 98% of ammoniacal nitrogen, with an operating time of 4 to 9 days. The volume of air consumed to remove 1 g of ammoniacal nitrogen varied from 9, 91, and 21.6 m3. The ammonia recovery was about 92% using a phosphoric acid solution, producing the ammonia phosphate.

ABSTRACT

We studied different pre-treatments of poultry litter aiming to add economic value to this residue. Strategies were applied to extract ammonium nitrogen with the aim of allowing its further use as fertilizer, and to promote the hydrolysis and solubilization of lignocellulosic components with the aim of facilitating its subsequent conversion to biogas. Ammonia extraction was performed by solubilization in water in a one-step process and by successive extraction steps (3 times 60 min). Successive extractions presented greater removal of total ammonia nitrogen than did one-step extraction, solubilizing about 36% of the ammonia in water. In parallel pre-treatment using ultrasound was performed to increase carbon bioavailability for anaerobic digestion. Using this tool, 24.7 g kg-1 of total organic carbon and 13.0 g kg-1 of total reducing sugars were solubilized, employing 10% dry mass sample amount, 100% amplitude ultrasound at frequency of 20 kHz amplitude and 2.5 min of treatment (energy input of 299 ± 7 kJ L-1; 3,822 ± 95 kJ kg-1). Anaerobic digestion of ultrassound pre-treated biomass was evaluated using a biological biogas production assay, and an increase of 10% of biogas production was obtained compared to untreated samples (147.9 and 163.0 mL g-1 for crude and pre-treated PL, respectively). The findings suggest that these are environmentally friendly and sustainable strategies to add economic value to poultry litter, reducing the environmental impacts of improper disposal.

ABSTRACT

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] grain yield is closely associated with the level of optimal nitrogen (N) supply, especially during the reproductive stages. Foliar fertilization with low rates of N have been considered as a strategy for furnishing additional N and enhancing grain yields. Field studies using 15N tracer were conducted over two growing seasons to investigate the impact of foliar N fertilization on grain yield, plant N content, the amount of N derived from fertilizer (NDFF) and N recovery efficiency (NRE). Four foliar N rates (0, 1300, 2600 and 3900 g ha−1) were supplied by two equal split applications at the R1 and R3 stages. Foliar N fertilization of soybean canopies did not affect grain yield, grain N content, shoot N content nor plant N content. Total NDFF was increased from 0.7 to 2.0 kg ha−1 across the N rates. Nonetheless, NRE was unaffected by foliar N fertilization, which averaged 53 %. Soybean plants allocated the same amount of N fertilizer to both grains and shoots. No significant effects of low rate foliar N fertilization were registered on soybean grain yield nor plant N content, despite considerable N fertilizer recovery by plant organs.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The production capacity of green and dry mass of the entire plant, efficiency of N conversion, apparent N recovery and the chemical composition of cultivar Mulato II was evaluated under a system of cuts and nitrogen doses. The assay, conducted in the municipality of Goiânia, GO, Brazil, had a totally randomized 2 x 4 factorial design (2 height cuts, 0.40 and 0.50 m and 4 nitrogen doses), with three replications and subdivided subplots. Treatments comprised four N doses (0, 50, 100 and 150 kgha-1 N, with urea as nitrogen source). There was no significant interaction (p>0.05) between N doses and cut heights for the variables productivity of green (PGM) and dry (PDM) mass, nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and apparent N recovery (ANR), which were neither affected (p<0.05) by N doses nor by evaluated cut heights. Average productivity reached 59,450 kgha-1 (PGV) and 10,367 kgha-1 (PDM) and it was produced an average of 19.62 kg of DM per kg of N, with a mean 56.00% recovery. N doses and cut heights did not affect (p>0.05) DM rates of the plant, whilst mean dry matter rate was 17.49%. CP rates were affected (p<0.05) by N doses (0, 50, 100 and 150 kgha-1) and cut heights (0.40 and 0.50 m) and by the interaction of these factors. CP rates of the entire plant hybrid Brachiaria cv. Mulato II increased (p<0.05) due to N doses through an increasing linear relationship. Since there was a significant effect (p<0.05) with regard to cut height and CP rates decreased with height increase. NDF rates were significantly influenced by N doses (p<0.05) and by cut heights (p<0.05), with significance for the interaction (p<0.05) of over 100 kgha-1 N doses only. No significant interaction (p>0.05) occurred in ADF rates among the variables analyzed. ADF contents were influenced by N supply (p<0.05) with decreasing quadratic regression as N doses increased.
