ABSTRACT

It is a reflection on the consolidation of nursing as a professional discipline and the elements that, according to the scientific literature, make up this development. From there, the progress of nursing development in the Latin American context is analyzed and some aspects that may be influencing this development are identified. The academic field is pointed out as a strategic space to study and intervene in if the aim is to analyze the differentiated progress that nursing has had according to the context, and it is recognized that it is these spaces the nursing training schools from which the discussions that have underpinned the most significant developments of nursing as a professional discipline have been led with greater force.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of an educational intervention (escape room) in the acquisition and retention of knowledge in relation to the Infarction Code, and to compare the knowledge of other teaching methodologies related to the Infarction Code. METHODS: A pre-post study was designed without a control group. After one month of the master class on the Infarction Code given to master's degree (doctors and nurses), an educational intervention was carried out consisting of an Escape Room on the same content, with a questionnaire that collected various sociodemographic data, and a knowledge test on the Infarction Code, which was repeated immediately after the activity and at the end of 2 months after the activity, and a test of knowledge on the Infarction Code. immediately after the activity and 2 months after the master class. Likewise, after the activity, a gamified experience evaluation questionnaire (GAMEX) was completed. RESULTS: Thirty-two students received the educational intervention (12 physicians and 20 nurses), and differences were observed between medical and nursing professionals in terms of initial knowledge of simulation and gamification. After the activity, and based on the initial knowledge test, the score increased by 3.49 points, an increase that was also reflected in the test taken two months after the master class, where an increase of 2.08 points was maintained. The participants rated the experience positively, with no significant overall differences between the two professional groups. CONCLUSIONS: The nurses had greater knowledge and contact with clinical simulation, virtual reality and gamification. The escape room showed to be a valid method for the assimilation and retention of knowledge in master's degree students. Medical professionals experienced a greater degree of immersion in the activity.

ABSTRACT

The current demand on health services requires that nurses play a key role, by adapting their competencies to different fields and complexity levels. The approach of situations presented by critically ill patients underpins the need for development of specialised competencies in specific areas such as patient safety, prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections, performance of specific techniques and interventions, autonomous medication management or the use of technology, among others. Spain relies on a specialist training programme that is unique worldwide. Training admission is managed through a contract as a "Resident Nurse Intern" (EIR, Enfermera Interna Residente), provided by regional healthcare services. Only 6 specialities have been established and developed, in an uneven manner and with a short provision of places, annually. Given that the specialization in critical care nursing does not exist, nurses usually self-fund their postgraduate training to enhance their opportunities career development. The development of a speciality for critical care nursing is a priority. The models proposed advocate for creating nursing roles that could cover the systemic gaps through the expansion of their competencies and the introduction of procedures that fit nursing into advanced practice, which could be achieved through Advanced Accreditation Diplomas. Simultaneously, it would be convenient to analyse how and why such a dynamic discipline in some countries became stuck in anachronistic models of the Spanish healthcare system. This analysis might contribute to move forward on the development of areas of improvement in terms of service access and quality of care.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Health systems that apply artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming the roles of healthcare providers, including those of Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) providers. These professionals are required to utilize informatics knowledge and skills to deliver quality care, necessitating a high level of informatics competencies, which should be developed through well-structured courses. The purpose of this study is to assess the informatics competency scale scores of DNP students and to provide recommendations for enhancing the informatics curriculum. METHODS: An online informatics course was offered to students enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing to DNP program, and their informatics competency, which includes three subscales, was evaluated. Online survey data were collected from Fall 2021 to Fall 2022 using the "Self-Assessment of Informatics Competency Scale for Health Professionals." RESULTS: An analysis of 127 student responses revealed that students demonstrated competence in overall informatics competency and in one subscale: "applied computer skills (clinical informatics)." They showed proficiency in the "basic computer skills" and the "role" subscales. However, they reported lower competency in managing data and integrating standard terminology into their practice. CONCLUSIONS: The findings offer detailed insights into the current informatics competencies of DNP students and can inform informatics educators on how to enhance their courses. As healthcare institutions increasingly depend on AI applications, it is imperative for informatics educators to include AI-related content in their curricula.

ABSTRACT

Poor health outcomes for children are directly tied to poor social determinants of health and systemic, embedded health care inequities. To prepare the next generation of pediatric advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), nursing schools must educate students to address inequities through innovative curricular models and teaching modalities. The purpose of this manuscript is to describe the application of an antiracism framework to a graduate APRN program. This article describes the application of this framework, which led to significant administrative, curricular, and course changes to prepare pediatric-focused APRN students to address the health inequities and poor social determinants of health facing children today. By describing our journey to embed an antiracism framework, other nursing schools can make substantive changes necessary to prepare their students to address these health inequities.

ABSTRACT

(1) Background: AI (artificial intelligence) chatbots have been widely applied. ChatGPT could enhance individual learning capabilities and clinical reasoning skills and facilitate students' understanding of complex concepts in healthcare education. There is currently less emphasis on its application in nursing education. The application of ChatGPT in nursing education needs to be verified. (2) Methods: A descriptive study was used to analyze the scores of ChatGPT on the registered nurse license exam (RNLE) in 2022~2023, and to explore the response and explanations of ChatGPT. The process of data measurement encompassed input sourcing, encoding methods, and statistical analysis. (3) Results: ChatGPT promptly responded within seconds. The average score of four exams was around 51.6 to 63.75 by ChatGPT, and it passed the RNLE in 2022 1st and 2023 2nd. However, ChatGPT may generate misleading or inaccurate explanations, or it could lead to hallucination; confusion or misunderstanding about complicated scenarios; and languages bias. (4) Conclusions: ChatGPT may have the potential to assist with nursing education because of its advantages. It is recommended to integrate ChatGPT into different nursing courses, to assess its limitations and effectiveness through a variety of tools and methods.

ABSTRACT

Changes in medical education demand efficient professionals in their teaching. In this sense, education in the nursing career must be exercised with a broad pedagogical culture, which is achieved through academic growth that prepares the individual to be flexible in dealing with constant social, institutional and curricular variations. The epistemological referents on this subject reveal a limited systematization of such improvement in nursing teachers with respect to the development of their teacher training. This article briefly outlines the stages of the development of the growth, as well as the inadequacies that were presented in each one of them. Finally, some elements of professional development and pedagogical culture are described, which argue the transcendence of both in the formative process of nursing teachers.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Following the 2010 report, "The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health," Robert Wood Johnson Foundation created the Future of Nursing Scholars program to increase the number of PhD-prepared nurses who could assume leadership roles earlier in their careers by shortening the PhD education trajectory and developing leadership skills. PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to describe the state of the field at program launch, the program development, and operations. METHODS: A descriptive narrative was used, which relied on literature review focused on nursing PhD program completion and presentation of FNS program objectives and findings. FINDINGS: Nurses from 46 schools pursued their PhDs as Future of Nursing Scholars. As of May 1, 2022, 181 scholars graduated with 20 scholars still enrolled. Preliminary results suggest accelerate PhD programs featuring intensive mentoring and financial support can produce well-prepared nurse researchers ready for postdoctoral positions and leadership roles. DISCUSSION: Program attributes including financial support and leadership development initiatives may be replicated.

ABSTRACT

As healthcare delivery continues to evolve and expand, nurse educators must prepare advanced practice registered nursing (APRN) students to use telehealth technology safely, effectively, and confidently. The aims of this study were to describe APRN students' beliefs and confidence regarding the delivery of care via telehealth in their future practice. To evaluate these aims, a single group comparison study was conducted. APRN students received an intervention comprised of multimodal telehealth instruction, which involved the simulated application of telehealth with standardized patients. Students' beliefs regarding telehealth did not significantly change between the pre- and post-intervention, in which all areas were rated high pre-intervention. Students reported an increase in their perception and confidence post-intervention. Integration of telehealth into the APRN curriculum is essential to instil knowledge and confidence as healthcare technology advances.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate research from Brazilian postgraduate students who provide evidence of effectiveness for Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC). METHODS: We conducted a literature review study of thesis and dissertations available in the Brazilian Digital Library of Dissertations and Theses (D/T) in May 2021 regardless of the year they were conducted. In those studies that did not utilize the NIC in the effectiveness evaluation, the cross-mapping methodology was employed between NIC and the interventions used by the authors of the studies. RESULTS: Using a systematic process, we identified 91 studies. Twenty-seven met a priori inclusion and exclusion criteria. We found an increase in studies that focused on nursing interventions in the last 10 years (n = 19), a large proportion of clinical trials (n = 16), and the majority of articles from the Southeast region of Brazil (n = 20). The areas of focus were adult and elderly care, and with a special interest in the behavioral domain (n = 11). Two sensitivity criteria were identified in all D/T (n = 27), and each study presented evidence of effectiveness of a minimum of three criteria simultaneously. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the effectiveness criteria, the Brazilian scientific production in postgraduate programs carried out by nurses provides evidence of the effectiveness for NIC nursing interventions. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: It is recommended to conduct further research that uses the NIC in the planning, conduct, and evaluation of interventions, based on effectiveness criteria of nursing sensitivity.
