ABSTRACT

AIM: To identify the knowledge, attitude and practice of nursing interruptions and related factors among nurses in China. BACKGROUND: Nursing interruptions are extremely common and have introduced major security risks and harm to hospitalized patients. However, nursing interruptions' factors are not well known. DESIGN: A nationwide cross-sectional descriptive survey. METHODS: A multistratified random sampling method was used to obtain nurses from five provinces in China. We collected data by online questionnaires (the Knowledge, Attitude and Practice Questionnaire of Nursing Interruptions, the Chinese Revised Safety Attitude Questionnaire and the Coping Adaptation Processing Scale). We used the Mann-Whitney test, the Kruskal-Wallis test, Spearman's linear correlation analysis and multiple linear stepwise regression to analyze the data. A STROBE checklist was used to report the results. RESULTS: Of the 14500 questionnaires distributed, 14302 (98.6 %) were returned. The mean score was 79.69 (SD 17.73) and the level was medium. Having attended nursing interruptions training and attended nursing safety training, safety attitude, coping ability and position were positive factors, while age and marital status were negative factors (F=1068.226, p < 0.001, R2 =0.374, adjusted R2 =0.373). CONCLUSIONS: Chinese nurses expressed a moderate level of knowledge, attitude and practice of nursing interruptions. Safety attitude, having attended nursing interruptions training, coping ability, having attended nursing safety training, position, age and marital status were predictors. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Nursing managers should pay attention to the influencing factors of clinical nurses' knowledge, attitude and practice of nursing interruptions and take effective individualized training for clinical nurses with different ages, positions and marital status to improve their coping ability, so as to ensure nursing safety and improve nursing quality.

ABSTRACT

Nursing interruptions can suspend the nursing process and distracting the nurses' attention. In a nursing information system, there are lots of pop-up windows to notify the nurses to complete the nursing records. These notifications can also interrupt the original work. We proposed an "Integrated Reminders of Nursing Written Assignment" system to reduce the number of interruptions from the nursing information system. The result showed that the number of pop-up windows decreased from 489.48 to 0 per shift. The completeness of the nursing records raised from 97.3% to 100%. The "Integrated Reminders of Nursing Written Assignment" can effectively reduce the frequency of nursing interruptions and improve the quality of nursing records.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the status and influencing factors of nurses′ cognitive ability of nursing interruptions in operating room. Methods:From March to May 2020, convenient sampling was conducted, a questionnaire was used to investigate the cognitive ability of operating room registered nurses in some provinces and cities in China. The influencing factors were analyzed by single factor analysis and multiple stepwise linear regression analysis. Results:Finally, 2 827 questionnaires were collected from 1 municipality directly under the central government and 15 provinces, involving 42 municipal and county hospitals. The nurses′ cognitive ability of nursing interruptions in operating room scored 105.73 ± 13.39, which was in the middle level. A total of 2 427 (87.37%) operating room nurses thought it necessary to receive training on nursing interruptions, but only 796 (28.16%) nurses had received training on nursing interruptions. Multiple stepwise linear regression analysis showed that different job categories ( B=-0.714, P<0.001), whether to pay attention to nursing interruptions ( B=5.449, P<0.001), the frequency of experience nursing interruptions ( B=-1.916, P<0.001)and whether to participate in the training of nursing interruptions ( B=-4.806, P<0.001) were the influencing factors of operating room nurses' cognitive ability of nursing interruptions. Conclusions:The operating room nurses' cognitive ability of nursing interruptions is in the middle level. The current situation of training is not good, but the training demand is high. Managers should strengthen the systematic training of nurses on nursing interruptions, especially those with junior nurses in operating room, to improve nurses' attention and cognitive ability of nursing interruptions.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To explore the knowledge, attitude and practice of Chinese nurses regarding nursing interruptions and related factors. METHODS: A total of 6,400 nurses from 31 hospitals in China were investigated by using the Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) Questionnaire of Nursing Interruptions. The questionnaire consists of three dimensions, knowledge, attitude and practice, containing 10, 9 and 7 items, with full score of 50, 45 and 28, respectively. RESULTS: The mean overall KAP score regarding nursing interruptions of Chinese nurses was 74.05 ± 16.65 (range: 26-123), with scores for the knowledge, attitude, and practice component being 21.74 ± 9.80, 34.83 ± 6.98, and 17.49 ± 4.97, respectively. Among the nurses, 70.8% of them experienced an average level of KAP toward nursing interruptions while 15.5% were at a poor level. The knowledge, attitude, and practice of nursing interruptions were better in chief nurses, managers, nurses with a master degree or above, nurses ever received training, and nurses with a strong agreement to leadership compared to nurses in other groups (P < 0.05). In addition, employment type, professional title, position, standardized training and leaders' attention were predictors of KAP in nurses. CONCLUSION: Chinese nurses have a moderate level of KAP regarding nursing interruptions. Leaders' attention, standardized training, position, professional title and employment type could predict nurses' KAP state of nursing interruptions. Thus, a targeted training program should be implemented for clinical nurses by nursing leaders, with a particular focus on feasibility and professionalism.

ABSTRACT

through observation recorded source, type, the affairs occupying nurses when the interruptions occurred, results, years of experience and start-stop time. Results Total 702 interruptions had been observed, reasons accounting for interruptions:surgeons (23.1%,162/702) and circumstances (16.7%,117/702);the major type: intrusion (39.7%,279/702); the affairs occupying nurses when the interruptions occurred:sterile operation(19.2%,135/702) and equipment inventory(14.7%,103/702); the major result: negative (84.6%,594/702). Conclusions There is a high level frequency of interruption events, intraoperative workflows need to be well designed to reduce unnecessary interruptions.
