ABSTRACT

The continuous scanning laser Doppler vibrometry (CSLDV) technique is usually used to evaluate the vibration operational deflection shapes (ODSs) of structures with continuous surfaces. In this paper, an extended CSLDV is demonstrated to measure the non-continuous surface of the bladed disk and to obtain the ODS efficiently. For a bladed disk, the blades are uniformly distributed on a given disk. Although the ODS of each blade can be derived from its response data along the scanning path with CSLDV, the relative vibration direction between different blades cannot be determined from those data. Therefore, it is difficult to reconstruct the complete vibration mode of the whole blade disk. In order to measure the complete ODS of the bladed disk, a method based on ODS frequency response functions (ODS FRFs) has been proposed. While the ODS of each blade is measured by designing the suitable scanning paths in CSLDV, an additional response signal is obtained at a fixed point as the reference signal to identify the relative vibration phase between the blade and the blade of the bladed disk. Finally, a measurement is performed with a simple bladed disk and the results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed extended CSLDV method.

ABSTRACT

This paper explores the critical role of networking, particularly within the oncology data specialist community, in developing and implementing an educational course. Networking, both within and beyond academia, is essential for gathering resources, expertise, and support necessary for designing and delivering an effective curriculum tailored to the demands of oncology data analysis. Networking within this specialized community facilitates collaboration with other educators and professionals, sharing of best practices, innovative teaching methodologies, and assessment strategies specific to oncology data analysis. This paper examines how networking within the oncology data specialist community contributed to the creation of a dynamic and comprehensive course, ultimately enriching the educational experience and preparing students for success.

ABSTRACT

Lead-cooled fast reactors exhibit strong inherent safety performance and good economic features, while material degradation due to corrosion and irradiation is still challenging. Oxide dispersion-strengthened steels are one of the promising candidates for fuel cladding materials. The effects of both irradiation and corrosion on ODS steel need to be further studied. In this work, MX-ODS steel was irradiated by Fe ions at 500 °C up to 46 dpa. Later, the as-received specimen and the irradiated specimen were used to conduct corrosion tests in oxygen-saturated Pb at 550 °C for 1 h. In the as-received specimen, discontinuous oxides penetrated by Pb and Pb in contact with steel matrix were observed, demonstrating unsatisfactory corrosion resistance of the material. However, in the irradiated specimen after corrosion experiment, a protective oxide layer formed and prevented Pb attack. The oxidation behavior differences between the two specimens can be attributed to the defects produced by irradiation and the structural discrepancy in oxides caused by the formation process. A possible mechanism of irradiation on the corrosion is discussed. In the as-received specimen, Fe atoms loss led to voids in the oxides, and lead penetrated the oxides through these voids. In the irradiated specimen, defects left by previous irradiation helped to form a more uniform oxide layer. The adhesive outer magnetite oxide and the Fe ions generated from where grain boundary oxidation developed retarded the presence of voids and made the oxide layer protective.

ABSTRACT

Oxide Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) ferritic steels are promising materials for the nuclear power sector. This paper presents the results of a study on the sintering process using the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) technique, focusing on ODS ferritic steel powders with different contents (0.3 and 0.6 vol.%) of Y2O3. The novelty lies in the analysis of the effect of pre-annealing treatment on powders previously prepared by mechanical alloying on the microstructure, mechanical, and thermal properties of the sinters. Using the SPS method, it was possible to obtain well-densified sinters with a relative density above 98%. Pre-annealing the powders resulted in an increase in the relative density of the sinters and a slight increase in their thermal conductivity. The use of low electron energies during SEM analysis allowed for a fairly good visualization of the reinforcing oxides uniformly dispersed in the matrix. Analysis of the Mössbauer spectroscopy results revealed that pre-annealing induces local atomic rearrangements within the solid solution. In addition, there was an additional spectral component, indicating the formation of a Cr-based paramagnetic phase. The ODS material with a higher Y2O3 content showed increased Vickers hardness values, as well as increased Young's modulus and nanohardness, as determined by nanoindentation tests.

ABSTRACT

The microstructure evolution associated with the cold forming sequence of an Fe-14Cr-1W-0.3Ti-0.3Y2O3 grade ferritic stainless steel strengthened by dispersion of nano oxides (ODS) was investigated. The material, initially hot extruded at 1100 °C and then shaped into cladding tube geometry via HPTR cold pilgering, shows a high microstructure stability that affects stress release heat treatment efficiency. Each step of the process was analyzed to better understand the microstructure stability of the material. Despite high levels of stored energy, heat treatments, up to 1350 °C, do not allow for recrystallization of the material. The Vickers hardness shows significant variations along the manufacturing steps. Thanks to a combination of EBSD and X-ray diffraction measurements, this study gives a new insight into the contribution of statistically stored dislocation (SSD) recovery on the hardness evolution during an ODS steel cold forming sequence. SSD density, close to 4.1015 m-2 after cold rolling, drops by only an order of magnitude during heat treatment, while geometrically necessary dislocation (GND) density, close to 1.1015 m-2, remains stable. Hardness decrease during heat treatments appears to be controlled only by the evolution of SSD.

ABSTRACT

Osmotic demyelinating disease of the central nervous system has two variants: central pontine myelinolysis and extra-pontine myelinolysis (EPM). Up to 10% of cases of osmotic demyelination syndrome are associated with EPM, which mostly affects the thalamus and basal ganglia. It is commonly associated with the rapid correction of hyponatremia. An elderly woman in her 60s presented with complaints of acute gastroenteritis and giddiness and visited the emergency ward. On examination, she was conscious and oriented to time but disoriented to place and person and had slurring of speech with signs of dehydration. Her serum sodium levels were 100 meq/L, and her brain MRI was normal. After shifting her to the intensive care unit, she was treated with 200 ml of 3% NaCl bolus to correct her hyponatremia. On day three, she began developing rigidity in both lower limbs, which progressed to the upper limbs with hyperreflexia and mutism. A brain MRI was done, which showed subtle hyperintensities in the caudate lobe with no other new findings. Her serum aldosterone and cortisol were on the lower side of the normal range. Treatment of tablet levodopa-carbidopa (100/25) combination thrice a day (TDS) led to an improvement in her health condition.

ABSTRACT

In this work, the nanostructure of oxide dispersion-strengthened steels was studied by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and atom probe tomography (APT). The steels under study have different alloying systems differing in their contents of Cr, V, Ti, Al, and Zr. The methods of local analysis of TEM and APT revealed a significant number of nanosized oxide particles and clusters. Their sizes, number densities, and compositions were determined. A calculation of hardness from SANS data collected without an external magnetic field, or under a 1.1 T field, showed good agreement with the microhardness of the materials. The importance of taking into account two types of inclusions (oxides and clusters) and both nuclear and magnetic scattering was shown by the analysis of the scattering data.

ABSTRACT

A well-known solvatochromic dye, Reichardt's dye (R-dye), was used to evaluate the hydrophobicity of alkyl-group-functionalized silica particles (ASPs) with different chain lengths. The absorption spectra of R-dye were measured in a single ASP in a mixed solution of water and an organic solvent (methanol (MeOH), ethanol (EtOH), acetonitrile (ACN), tetrahydrofuran (THF), or N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF)) using absorption microspectroscopy. The polarity parameter in the ASPs (ET), determined by the absorption maximum, was observed to be smaller than those in bulk solutions, indicating that R-dye was present in a more hydrophobic environment. In EtOH, THF, and DMF, R-dye was distributed within the alkyl chain layer including the organic solvent. An increase in the organic solvent content of the bulk solution led to a higher organic solvent concentration in the alkyl chain layer, resulting in a decrease in ET. In MeOH and ACN, the R-dye was distributed within the alkyl chain layer and concentrated phase. Moreover, with the increase in the organic molecule content, the distribution of R-dye in the concentrated phase became dominant in MeOH and ACN system, leading to an increase in the ET value. The findings presented in this paper are expected to attract the attention of a wide range of researchers in chromatography.

La Fundación Universitaria de Ciencias de la Salud FUCS creó en 2021 la Vicerrectoría de Proyección Social, con la función principal de interactuar y beneficiar a la comunidad a través de labores de extensión, salud comunitaria, educación continuada, relacionamiento con otras instituciones y responsabilidad social, ramas que tienen una clara representación dentro de las diferentes dependencias de dicha función sustantiva y que aportan en forma directa a los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS). Una de las divisiones que hace más evidente dicha labor es la de salud comunitaria, con la que se han logrado acumular miles de beneficiarios, teniendo en su haber 378441 durante 2023, con actividades que se dividen en cuatro grandes programas: FUCS al parque, espacios educativos saludables, vivienda, familia y salud, y entorno seguro para el paciente y su familia. Se busca realizar promoción de la salud y prevención de la enfermedad a través de labores presenciales dentro de instituciones educativas de todo nivel, en parques, empresas e instituciones hospitalarias, así como las virtuales con los espacios de Pregúntele al Especialista, o en diversos canales de comunicación.


The Fundación Universitaria de Ciencias de la Salud FUCS created in 2021 the Vice Rector's Office of Social Outreach, with the main function of interacting and benefiting the community through outreach work, community health, continuing education, relations with other institutions and social responsibility, branches that have a clear representation within the different units of this substantive function and that contribute directly to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). One of the divisions that makes this work more evident is that of community health, with which thousands of beneficiaries have been accumulated, with 378,441 beneficiaries during 2023, with activities divided into four major programs: FUCS to the park, healthy educational spaces, housing, family and health, and safe environment for the patient and his or her family. The aim is to promote health and prevent disease through face-to-face activities in educational institutions at all levels, in parks, companies and hospitals, as well as virtual activities through the Ask the Specialist spaces, or through various communication channels.

ABSTRACT

Trafficking of women is a serious violation of human rights. It is related to vulnerability, poverty, gender inequality, lack of education and migration processes. This global problem also highlights the noncompliance with the Sustainable Development Goals. This reality brings serious health problems to its victims, a point of interest for nursing action. Thus, this work carried out through the collaborative learning method Jigsaw in the context of an elective course of the fourth year of the Degree in Nursing, aims to critically analyze the consequences of trafficking for women's health, relating it to the violation of their human rights and the incompatibility of this international practice with the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, to conclude with recommendations that can guide Nursing to provide more appropriate care from its competence as an activist in health for this group. Multiple actions aimed at the prevention, protection and care of women victims of trafficking have been identified, the conflict is generated at the time of executing them, since the neglect of these women from multiple approaches has been noted.(AU)


La trata de mujeres supone una grave violación de los derechos humanos. Está relacionada con la vulnerabilidad, la pobreza, la desigualdad de género, la desescolarización y con los procesos migratorios. En este problema global destaca además el incumplimiento de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible. Esta realidad acarrea graves problemas de salud a sus víctimas, punto de interés para la actuación de enfermería. Así, este trabajo realizado mediante el método de aprendizaje colaborativo Jigsaw, en el contexto de una asignatura optativa de cuarto curso del Grado en Enfermería, tiene como objetivo el análisis desde el paradigma socio crítico de las consecuencias que la trata supone para la salud de las mujeres, relacionándolo con la vulneración de sus derechos humanos y la incompatibilidad de esta práctica internacional con la consecución de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible, para concluir con recomendaciones que puedan orientar a la enfermería a proporcionar cuidados más adecuados desde su competencia como activista en salud. Se han identificado múltiples acciones dirigidas a la prevención, protección y atención de las mujeres víctima de trata, el conflicto se genera a la hora de ejecutarlas, ya que se ha constatado la desatención de estas mujeres desde múltiples enfoques.(AU)


O tráfico de mulheres é uma grave violação dos direitos humanos. Está ligado à vulnerabilidade, pobreza, desigualdade de género, falta de escolaridade e processos de migração. Este problema global também realça o fracasso no cumprimento dos Objectivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável. Esta realidade causa graves problemas de saúde para as suas vítimas, um ponto de interesse para a acção de enfermagem. Assim, este trabalho, realizado utilizando o método de aprendizagem colaborativa Jigsaw no contexto de uma disciplina opcional no quarto ano do Bacharelato em Enfermagem, visa analisar criticamente as consequências do tráfico para a saúde das mulheres, relacionando o com a violação dos seus direitos humanos e a incompatibilidade desta prática internacional com a realização dos Objectivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável, para concluir com recomendações que possam orientar a enfermagem no sentido de proporcionar cuidados mais adequados a partir da sua competência como activista de saúde para este grupo. Foram identificadas múltiplas acções que visam a prevenção, protecção e cuidados às mulheres vítimas de tráfico, o conflito surge quando se trata de as implementar, uma vez que se verificou a negligência destas mulheres em relação às múltiplas intervenções.(AU)

ABSTRACT

A 66-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency department with diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting as well as low-grade fever. She was initially treated with ciprofloxacin and metronidazole with symptomatic improvement and was discharged. One week later, she returned to the emergency department for gait instability, dizziness, and vomiting and had a witnessed generalized tonic-clonic seizure in the hospital. During both admissions, the presence of ionic alterations such as severe hypomagnesemia, hypophosphatemia, and hypokalemia stood out, while sodium levels remained normal. Among her antecedents, she had a hiatal hernia and had been receiving treatment with omeprazole for years.

ABSTRACT

After the Fukushima nuclear accident, the development of new accident-tolerant fuel cladding materials has become a research hotspot around the world. Due to its outstanding corrosion resistance, radiation resistance, and creep properties at elevated temperatures, the oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) FeCrAl alloy, as one of the most promising candidate materials for accident-tolerant fuel cladding, has been extensively studied during the past decade. Recent research on chemical composition design as well as its effects on the microstructure and mechanical properties has been reviewed in this paper. In particular, the reasonable/optimized content of Cr is explained from the aspects of oxidation resistance, radiation resistance, and thermal stability. The essential role of the Al element in oxidation resistance, high-temperature stability, and workability was reviewed in detail. The roles of oxide-forming elements, i.e., Y (Y2O3), Ti, and Zr, and the solid solution strengthening element, i.e., W, were discussed. Additionally, their reasonable contents were summarized. Typical types of oxide, i.e., Y-Ti-O, Y-Al-O, and Y-Zr-O, and their formation mechanisms were also discussed in this paper. All aspects mentioned above provide an important reference for understanding the effects of composition design parameters on the properties of nuclear-level ODS FeCrAl alloy.

ABSTRACT

A 40-year-old female with a history of chronic alcohol use disorder presented with an acute intractable left-sided headache for three days and progressively worsening unsteady gait requiring a wheelchair to ambulate. The patient had a history of chronic alcoholism since 2019 but reported abstinence since September 2021. One month after quitting alcohol, she experienced a sudden deterioration in bilateral extremity neuropathy, forgetfulness, difficulty writing, and severe mood swings, which continued to worsen until her presentation in July 2022. Laboratory tests, including complete blood count and electrolyte levels, were within normal ranges. A previous MRI performed during the investigation for alcoholic neuropathy a few months before she quit drinking showed no abnormalities. However, a subsequent MRI during work-up for the current acute symptoms revealed significant signal abnormalities involving the central pons, bilateral cerebral peduncles, and medullary pyramids, consistent with chronic central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) with extrapontine myelinolysis (EPM) extending into the peduncles. The patient received treatment with folate and multivitamins and was scheduled for outpatient follow-up with physical therapy for rehabilitation. This case highlights CPM as a consequence of alcohol withdrawal and emphasizes the importance of timely diagnosis and appropriate management in such patients.

Tungsten (W), as a promising plasma-facing material for fusion nuclear reactors, exhibits ductility reduction. Introducing high-density coherent nano-dispersoids into the W matrix is a highly efficient strategy to break the tradeoff of the strength-ductility performance. In this work, we performed helium (He) ion irradiation on coherent oxide-dispersoids strengthened (ODS) W to investigate the effect of coherent nanoparticle interfaces on the behavior of He bubbles. The results show that the diameter and density of He bubbles in ODS W are close to that in W at low dose of He ion irradiation. The radiation-induced hardening increment of ODS W, being 25% lower than that of pure W, suggests the involvement of the coherent interface in weakening He ion irradiation-induced hardening and emphasizes the potential of coherent nano-dispersoids in enhancing the radiation resistance of W-based materials.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIM: A murine model mimicking osmotic demyelination syndrome (ODS) revealed with histology in the relay posterolateral (VPL) and ventral posteromedial (VPM) thalamic nuclei adjoined nerve cell bodies in chronic hyponatremia, amongst the damaged 12 h and 48 h after reinstatement of osmolality. This report aims to verify and complement with ultrastructure other neurophysiology, immunohistochemistry, and molecular biochemistry data to assess the connexin-36 protein, as part of those hinted close contacts.This ODS investigation included four groups of mice: Sham (NN; n = 13), hyponatremic (HN; n = 11), those sacrificed 12 h after a fast restoration of normal natremia (ODS12h; n = 6) and mice sacrificed 48 h afterward, or ODS48 h (n = 9). Out of these, thalamic zones samples included NN (n = 2), HN (n = 2), ODS12h (n = 3) and ODS48h (n = 3). RESULTS: Ultrastructure illustrated junctions between nerve cell bodies that were immunolabeled with connexin36 (Cx36) with light microscopy and Western blots. These cell's junctions were reminiscent of low resistance junctions characterized in other regions of the CNS with electrophysiology. Contiguous neurons showed neurolemma contacts in intact and damaged tissues according to their location in the ODS zones, at 12 h and 48 h post correction along with other demyelinating alterations. Neurons and ephaptic contact measurements indicated the highest alterations, including nerve cell necrosis in the ODS epicenter and damages decreased toward the outskirts of the demyelinated zone. CONCLUSION: Ephapses contained C × 36between intact or ODS injured neurons in the thalamus appeared to be resilient beyond the core degraded tissue injuries. These could maintain intercellular ionic and metabolite exchanges between these lesser injured regions and, thus, would partake to some brain plasticity repairs.

ABSTRACT

Abstract How might we define local innovation challenges that are user-centered but also address strategic goals, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? We propose a design process that introduces a relevant contribution to the practices of the Mission-oriented Innovation Policies (MIPs) field as it goes from Grand Societal Challenges (GSCs) to local innovation challenges, which are more relevant to local needs and capabilities of solution. The main goal of the design process is to go from a GSC, such as "access to health" and one of its missions, like "reducing chronic Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD)," to a more able-to-solve innovation challenge, passing by its mission, and different problems and aspects. Snowball sampling methods allow us to find and mobilize electable subjects and design thinking techniques to process problem mapping, election, and clustering, as well as create challenge statements. It was possible to translate GSC to the local reality while reducing contestation and complexity and producing a problem-grouped map with prioritization and three problem statements (challenges) with open phrasing and solution criteria to foster the users' desired outcomes.


Resumen ¿Cómo podemos definir desafíos locales de innovación local que estén centrados en el usuario pero que también aborden objetivos estratégicos, como los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS)? Proponemos un proceso de diseño que introduce una contribución relevante a las prácticas en el campo de las políticas de innovación orientadas por misión (en inglés, Mission-oriented Innovation Policies - MIPs), ya que va desde los grandes desafíos sociales (en inglés, Grand Societal Challenges - GSCs), comenzando con los ODS, hasta los desafíos locales de innovación, que son más relevantes para necesidades locales y capacidades de solución. El objetivo principal del proceso de diseño es ir desde un GSC, como "acceso a la salud" y una de sus misiones, como "reducir las Enfermedades Crónicas No Transmisibles (ECNT)", a un desafío de innovación más concreto, pasando por la misión, y por diferentes problemas y aspectos. Los métodos de muestreo de bola de nieve nos permiten encontrar y movilizar sujetos elegibles, y técnicas de design thinking, procesar el mapeo, la elección y la agrupación de problemas; y crear declaraciones de desafío. Fue posible traducir GSC a la realidad local, al mismo tiempo que se reducía la contestación y la complejidad, y se producía un plano agrupado de problemas con priorización, y tres declaraciones de problemas (desafíos) con redacción abierta y criterios de solución para promover los resultados deseados por los usuarios.


Resumo Como podemos definir os desafios locais de inovação que são centrados no usuário, mas também abordam objetivos estratégicos, como os Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS)? Propomos um processo de design que apresenta uma contribuição relevante para as práticas no campo das políticas de inovação orientadas para a missão (em inglês, Mission-oriented Innovation Policies - MIPs), uma vez que vai dos grandes desafios societais (em inglês, Grand Societal Challenges - GSCs) aos desafios locais de inovação, que são mais relevantes para as necessidades locais e capacidades de solução. O principal objetivo do processo de desenho é passar de um GSC, como o "acesso à saúde" e uma de suas missões, como "reduzir as Doenças Crônicas Não Transmissíveis (DCNT)", para um desafio de inovação mais capaz de resolver, passando pela sua missão, diferentes problemas e aspectos. Os métodos de amostragem bola de neve nos permitem encontrar e mobilizar assuntos elegíveis e técnicas de design thinking para processar o mapeamento de problemas, eleição e agrupamento; e criar declarações de desafio. Foi possível traduzir o GSC para a realidade local, reduzindo a contestação e a complexidade, e produzindo um mapa agrupado de problemas com priorização e três declarações de problemas (desafios) com formulação aberta e critérios de solução para promover os resultados desejados pelos usuários.

ABSTRACT

Cargo consolidation is becoming a crucial part of international transportation and changing the customer consumption patterns of the international community. Poor connections between different operations and the delay of international express have motivated sellers and logistics organizers to put timeliness first in international multimodal transport, especially during the COVID-19 epidemic. However, for cargo with small quality and multiple batches, designing an efficient consolidation network presents a set of unique challenges, including the coupling of multiple origins and destinations (ODs), and fully utilizing the capacity of the container. We defined a multistage timeliness transit consolidation problem to decouple the multiple ODs of the logistics resource. By solving this problem, we can increase the connectivity between different phases and make full use of the container. To make this systematic multistage transit consolidation more flexible, we proposed a two-stage adaptive-weighted genetic algorithm that mainly focuses on the edge area of the Pareto front space and the diversity of the population. Computational experiments indicate that the correlation between parameters has certain regular trends, and appropriate parameter settings can lead to more satisfactory results. We also confirm that the pandemic has a giant influence on the market share of different transportation modes. Moreover, the comparison with other approaches demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

ABSTRACT

In order to meet the growing energy demand, more environmentally friendly and efficient GEN-IV reactors have emerged. Additionally, nuclear structural materials need larger more safety margins for accident scenarios as a result of the Fukushima accident. In order to extend the failure time and lessen the effect of accidents, this design method for accident-tolerant fuel materials calls for cladding materials to maintain good corrosion resistance and mechanical properties during a beyond design basis accident (BDBA). Accidents involving nuclear reactors would undoubtedly result in higher temperatures, which would make it much harder for materials to withstand corrosion. Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) FeCrAl alloys have shown promise as candidate materials because of their extraordinarily slow reaction rates under high-temperature steam. However, the addition of the Al element renders the alloy's high-temperature mechanical properties insufficient. In particular, studies on the alloy's creep properties are extremely rare, despite the fact that the creep properties are crucial in the real service environment. Therefore, this paper focuses on the creep properties of ODS FeCrAl alloy, summarizes and analyzes the research results of this material, and provides a reference for future research and applications.

ABSTRACT

Beer potomania is a unique condition characterized by hyponatremia secondary to excessive beer drinking and low daily solute intake. We report a case of a 41-year-old African American female with multiple comorbidities, notably alcohol use disorder, who was initially treated for hypertensive emergency and was subsequently found to be hyponatremic during the same visit. Beer potomania was suspected as a leading etiology of hyponatremia. This report emphasizes the importance of the proper diagnosis and appropriate management of beer potomania in the setting of concomitant comorbidities. Clinician awareness is crucial in implementing immediate treatment and in the prevention of potentially fatal sequelae such as severe malnutrition and osmotic demyelination syndrome.

ABSTRACT

Aggressive treatment of hyper or hypoosmolar conditions can trigger osmotic demyelination syndrome. We describe the case of a 53-year-old male who began using carbamazepine to treat bipolar affective disorder and was later diagnosed with carbamazepine-induced syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion. The patient's mental state gradually improved once the hyponatremia was corrected using 3% normal saline and supportive therapy. The patient presented to the outpatient clinic with confusion and altered sensorium. Brain computed tomography showed diffuse cerebral atrophy and periventricular ischemia demyelination alterations, and magnetic resonance imaging showed an enhanced section in the brainstem that included the pons, suggesting osmotic demyelination alterations. Ventilatory support and supportive therapy were initiated, and hyponatremia was rectified. Although the patient did well with the treatment, his prognosis was still dismal, so he was sent home with instructions to follow up.
