ABSTRACT

This study reports OCP and PAH concentrations in the tissues of stranded sea snakes from Sharjah, UAE. Samples from 10 Hydrophis lapemoides, 2 Hydrophis ornatus and 1 Hydrophis curtus were analyzed. Muscle, liver and fat tissues were extracted using micro-QuEChERs, followed by d-SPE and analyzed using GC/MS. Higher concentrations of OCPs were detected, while PAHs were more frequently detected. Significant correlations suggest that OCPs and PAHs do bioaccumulate in the tissues of sea snakes. Additionally, OCPs with lower log Kow (octanol-water partition coefficient) values were mainly detected in the muscle samples of H. lapemoides, whereas OCPs with higher log Kow values were more commonly present in the liver and fat samples. The concentrations of OCPs reported in this study were higher than those previously documented in other marine reptiles in the UAE or sea snakes from different geographical regions.

ABSTRACT

Background This study aimed to identify sustainability priorities within Oman's healthcare sector using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) methodology. Mainly, it focused on assessing the relative importance of economic, environmental, and social factors and their sub-elements in sustaining Oman's healthcare system. Methodology A semi-quantitative, cross-sectional design was employed to collect data from 23 Omani healthcare experts with at least 10 years of experience in five different public hospitals in Oman. The AHP methodology was used to analyze pairwise comparisons of sustainability factors and derive their priorities. The consistency ratio was calculated to ensure the reliability of the analysis, and the transitivity rule was applied to address inconsistencies in pairwise comparisons. Results The findings revealed a strong emphasis on environmental and social sustainability, with economic considerations ranking comparatively lower. Circular practices emerged as a key priority within the environmental domain, while patient satisfaction stood out within the social domain. The analysis showed the integration between healthcare, environmental health, and societal well-being, emphasizing the need for holistic approaches to sustainability. Conclusions This study contributes to the understanding of healthcare sustainability by providing empirical evidence of stakeholder preferences within Oman's healthcare system. By quantitatively assessing the relative importance of economic, environmental, and social factors, it informs decision-making and resource allocation toward sustainable healthcare development. The findings also support the argument for integrated approaches to healthcare sustainability that balance economic efficiency with environmental protection and social inclusion.

ABSTRACT

Background: Over the last few decades, the pharmacy profession has witnessed a substantial evolution accompanied by the developing role of community pharmacists (CPs). Evidence indicates that extending the role of CPs contributes to fostering public health outcomes. However, in many countries, their role is still underused. To extend the role of CPs in Oman, it is crucial to understand their perception and determine the influences. Aim: This study determines the willingness of CPs in Oman to extend their role and assess their perception towards barriers. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted across Oman using an online self-administered survey targeting CPs working in the private sector. Result: Generally, respondents welcomed broadening their professional role. However, among the top perceived barriers were shortage of staff, insufficient training, lack of interconnection between CPs and physicians, and regulation constraints. Different socio-demographic characteristics of respondents showed a noticeable impact on their responses. Conclusion: CPs welcomed extending their role. However, several obstacles were raised that need to be tackled to enable CPs to advance their role.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: The impact of beta-thalassemia major (ß-TM) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Oman is not yet known. Affected individuals suffer from a wide range of physical, mental, and social consequences due to the need for regular hospital visits for blood transfusions and complications related to iron overload. This study aimed to assess the HRQoL of adult patients with ß-TM attending a single tertiary care center in Muscat, Oman, to identify factors influencing Omani patients' QoL for improved management and counseling. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among adult patients (≥ 18 years) with ß-TM at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital between September and November 2022. A validated Arabic version of the self-reported 36-item short-form health survey was used to determine HRQoL. Results: A total of 78 patients with ß-TM were enrolled in the study; 53.8% were male and the mean age was 26.0±0.8 years, ranging from 21-53 years. Most patients were from Al Batinah North governorate (n = 21; 26.9%) and Muscat (n = 20; 25.6%), unmarried (n = 44; 56.4%), did not have university-level education (n = 45; 57.7%), and were unemployed (n = 44; 56.4%). The HRQoL domain with the highest score was role limitations due to emotional problems (median score = 100), while general health and vitality received the lowest scores (mean scores were 60.2±15.9 and 59.1±20.5, respectively). Several variables were associated with better HRQoL in certain domains, including being married, having a high level of education, being employed, exercising regularly, and receiving family support (p < 0.05). However, iron overload and having ≥ 3 ß-TM-related disease complications were associated with poorer general health scores (p = 0.031 and 0.038, respectively), while a history of mental issues was associated with poorer scores in six out of eight HRQoL domains (p < 0.05). Moreover, negative perceptions regarding the social impact of the disease including delayed marriage, workplace difficulties, and reduced academic achievement were associated with poorer HRQoL in various domains (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Although the studied sample reported generally good QoL, several factors were found to affect HRQoL in various domains. Healthcare providers should prioritize maintaining acceptable iron overload levels in Omani patients with ß-TM to help avoid the development of disease-related complications, thereby ensuring better control of their clinical conditions and consequently improving their HRQoL.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To evaluate the performance of measurement of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) using Modification of Diet in Renal Disease equations (MDRD186, MDRD175) and Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equations, in comparison with technetium-99m diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (99Tc-DTPA) renogram method, the gold standard. A related aim was to correlate the three equations to estimate GFR and their impact on reclassifying the stages of CKD in adult Omani patients. Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited two groups of patients diagnosed with CKD during a 10-month period from January to October 2021. The first group comprised 48 patients who underwent a 99Tc-DTPA renogram procedure for GFR measurement, and the second group comprised 30 348 adult patients who did not undergo the same procedure; estimated GFR was calculated using the three equations. Results: The median of the reference GFR was 106.0 mL/min/1.73 m2, whereas the median estimated GFR for the MDRD175, MDRD186, and CKD-EPI equations were 92.5, 98.3, and 102.1, respectively. All three equations correlated moderately with the reference GFR (0.428, 0.428, 0.523, respectively; p < 0.010). The CKD-EPI showed lesser bias (3.7 vs. 12.9 and 7.5 for MDRD175 and MDRD186, respectively) and more accuracy (95.8% vs. 91.7% and 93.8%); however, it was the least precise (25.1 vs. 22.3 and 23.8). The MDRD186 performed similarly to the CKD-EPI equation at CKD stages 3a-5 and differed significantly at stages 1-2. Whereas the MDRD175 differed significantly with both equations at stages 1-3b and was similar to them at stages 4-5. Conclusions: The CKD-EPI equation had the highest accuracy and the least bias and precision in the general population. The MDRD186 CKD classification differed significantly from the CKD-EPI equation at CKD-stages 1-2 only. The CKD-EPI equation is preferred to MDRD for the detection and classification of early CKD stages.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To evaluate the prevalence of risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE) and the proportion of at-risk patients who receive appropriate thromboprophylaxis among inpatients in acute hospital care settings in Oman. A related objective was to evaluate the type and time of initiation of VTE prophylaxis. Methods: This multicenter, cross-sectional study was conducted in three tertiary hospitals in Oman. The study included acutely ill medical and surgical inpatients admitted from August to September 2022. VTE risk assessment and prophylaxis were assessed based on the 2012 recommendations of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP). Results: A total of 384 patients were enrolled, 240 were medical patients and 144 were surgical patients. As per the ACCP criteria, 179 (74.6%) of medical and 92 (63.9%) of surgical patients were at risk for VTE and required prophylaxis. Appropriate prophylaxis was received by 142 (79.3%) at-risk medical and 70 (76.1%) at-risk surgical patients. In cases where pharmacological prophylaxis was contraindicated, mechanical prophylaxis was markedly underused. For medical patients, the median day of initiating VTE prophylaxis was day one of admission. For surgical patients, the median day of initiating VTE prophylaxis was postoperative day one. Conclusions: The majority of hospitalized patients in Oman are at risk of VTE. However, a significant minority of patients do not receive the required pharmacological or mechanical prophylaxis. We recommend the development of a national VTE risk assessment and guiding tool with a facility for monitoring compliance.

ABSTRACT

This study explored parents' attitudes towards vaccinating their children against COVID-19 and the rate of vaccine hesitancy in Oman. A cross-sectional, online, self-administered questionnaire, previously validated and administered between June 2021 and May 2022, was used. The questionnaire consisted of nine items. Parents of children younger than 12 years were eligible for participation. A total of 384 participants, including 207 males (54%), completed the questionnaire, resulting in an 86% response rate (384/447). The results showed that 69% of participants were hesitant to vaccinate their children aged 1-11 years. In parents of children aged 1-4 years, vaccination status was significantly associated with vaccine hesitancy (odds ratio [OR], 0.116; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.044-0.306; p = 0.001). Furthermore, after multivariable analysis, compared to the fathers, mothers were significantly less likely to be associated with vaccine hesitancy (OR, 0.451; 95% CI, 0.240-0.848; p = 0.013).

ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study aimed to report any suspected adverse drug reactions (ADRs) experienced by all vaccinated staff and students in a tertiary teaching hospital following COVID-19 vaccination. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted during the COVID-19 vaccination campaign at Sultan Qaboos University and Hospital in Muscat, Oman, from August to September 2021. An online survey was generated and sent to all staff and students via email and text messages. An announcement was made on the hospital website with a link to the survey. Results: A total of 8,421 individuals reported being vaccinated at least once with a total of 11,468 doses administered from January to July 2021; 8,014 staff and students received the Pfizer-Biotech vaccine while 3,454 staff and students received the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. The survey received a total of 3,275 responses (response rate = 38.8%). Of these, 741 individuals (22.6%) experienced an ADR after vaccination and 67.2% (n = 498) were females (P <0.001). The majority of the ADRs reported were fever and chills (19.7%) followed by localised pain and swelling at the injection site (18.8%). Other ADRs such as hair loss (0.5%) were reported, and one staff/student reported a clot in the right leg. Among the responders, 27.0% considered their ADRs as mild while 25.0% considered them as severe. Conclusions: In the study cohort, mild symptoms of COVID-19 vaccines were reported. Females experienced more ADRs compared to males. Long-term observation of ADRs to the vaccines and follow-up monitoring should be done on subjects to preclude any unwanted effects.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study aimed to estimate the door-to-balloon (DTB) time and determine the organisational-level factors that influence delayed DTB times among patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction in Oman. Methods: A cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted on all patients who presented to the emergency department at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital and Royal Hospital, Muscat, Oman, and underwent primary percutaneous coronary interventions during 2018-2019. Results: The sample included 426 patients and the median DTB time was 142 minutes. The result of the bivariate logistic regression showed that patients who presented to the emergency department with atypical symptoms were 3 times more likely to have a delayed DTB time, when compared to patients who presented with typical symptoms (odds ratio [OR] = 3.003, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.409-6.400; P = 0.004). In addition, patients who presented during off-hours were 2 times more likely to have a delayed DTB time, when compared to patients who presented during regular working hours (OR = 2.291, 95% CI: 1.284-4.087; P = 0.005). Conclusion: To meet the DTB time recommendation, it is important to ensure adequate staffing during both regular and irregular working hours. Results from this study can be used as a baseline for future studies and inform strategies for improving the quality of care.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate and compare the clinical knowledge implications of the integrated management of childhood illness (IMCI) preservice education between pre-clerkship and junior clerkship medical students. Methods: This observational comparative cross-sectional study was conducted between June and August 2022 at Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat, Oman. A self-administered questionnaire was utilised and included questions on sociodemographic data, duration of IMCI preservice training, knowledge of the participants concerning the IMCI objectives and information on a range of childhood conditions. Results: A total of 97 medical students were included in the study. The majority of students (42.3%) had received 2 lectures in IMCI preservice training. The role of the IMCI approach in reducing childhood morbidity and mortality was advocated by the majority of students (80.8% in the junior-clerkship [JCR] group and 73.3% in the pre-clerkship group). The awareness of the IMCI component of improving the health system was higher in JCR compared to pre-clerkship participants (P = 0.044). When compared to pre-clerkship students, the JCR participants demonstrated a slightly higher awareness of skin pinch (P = 0.038), chest indrawing (P = 0.008), anaemia assessment based on nail bed examination (P = 0.002), diagnostic assessment of malnutrition based on palm examination (P = 0.018), sucking capacity in breastfeeding (P = 0.025), and vaccines such as those for tuberculosis (P = 0.001), pneumococcal (P = 0.018) and rotavirus (P = 0.007). Conclusion: The majority of students displayed good IMCI knowledge and JCR students showed better knowledge compared to pre-clerkship candidates.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: Cranioplasty is a complex craniofacial and neurosurgical procedure that aims to reinstate the architecture of the cranial vault and elevate both its aesthetic and neurological function. Several reconstructive materials have been thoroughly explored in the search for the optimal solution for cranioplasty. This study aimed to evaluate different material used for cranial reconstruction in Oman. Methods: This retrospective study included all patients who had had cranioplasty procedures performed at Khoula Hospital, Muscat, Oman, from 2012 to 2022. Demographic information, the characteristics of the cranial defect and any complications that occurred post-operatively were analysed. Results: A total of 47 patients were included in this study. The most common cause of cranial defects was craniectomy following traumatic head injury (70.2%) along with excision of fibrous dysplasia (10.6%). The most frequently utilised material for cranial repair was autologous bone grafts (n = 28), followed by polyetheretherketone (PEEK; n = 14). Interestingly, the replacement of bone grafts from previous craniectomy showed a notably high resorption rate (71.4%), in contrast to split calvarial grafts (0%) and other types of bone grafts (14.3%). Additionally, delayed graft infection was observed in 3.6% of the bone graft group and 7.1% of the PEEK group. Conclusion: Patient-specific alloplastic implants such as PEEK have gained popularity for large and complex cranioplasty, as they provide excellent aesthetic outcomes and leave no donor site morbidity. In contrast, bone grafts remain the gold standard for small to medium-sized cranial defects.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the variables that influenced a sample of Omani mothers' support for mandatory COVID-19 vaccines for children. The vaccination against COVID-19 averted millions of fatalities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, a considerable number of parents and caregivers opposed mandating COVID-19 vaccines for children. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at several healthcare facilities in Oman using a structured questionnaire between February and March 2022. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were used to analyse the data. Results: A total of 700 Omani mothers (response rate = 73.4%) who had children aged 5-11 years old were included. The median age of the mothers was 38 ± 5.19 years. The results of multivariable logistic regression were generally consistent with those of the univariable analysis except for age (odds ratio [OR] = 1.06, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.58-1.93; P = 0.86) and income (OR = 1.09, 95% CI: 0.58-2.03; P = 0.79). Mothers who were vaccine hesitant (OR = 9.82, 95% CI: 5.27-18.28; P <0.001), tested positive for COVID-19 (OR = 3.25, 95% CI: 1.80-5.86; P <0.001) and had one or two doses of COVID-19 vaccines (OR = 5.41, 95% CI: 2.92-10.03; P <0.001) were more likely to refuse mandating COVID-19 vaccines for children 5-11 years old. Conclusion: Mothers who were vaccine hesitant, tested positive for COVID-19 and had one or two doses of COVID-19 vaccines were more likely to oppose mandatory COVID-19 vaccines for young children. The findings should aid public health authorities in designing future childhood vaccine literacy programmes with specific attention to some subgroups in Oman to help reduce opposition to vaccines in future pandemics among mothers.

ABSTRACT

Endometrial cancer (EC) is the most common gynaecological cancer. The combination of lenvatinib and pembrolizumab has exhibited efficacy as the second line treatment for advanced EC, with a significant benefit in terms of progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival, but the adverse events (AE) profile is complex. AEs associated with the treatment may represent a limitation to this combination. Here, we report the case of a 38-year-old female patient diagnosed with stage IV EC elsewhere, whose disease progressed after the first line of treatment and was referred to a specialised cacncer centre in Muscat, Oman, in 2021. We treated her with the combination of lenvatinib and pembrolizumab. During the course of the treatment, she developed hand-foot syndrome grade III and hypothyroidism grade II. The AEs were managed with supportive medications, dose interruptions, dose reductions and multidisciplinary care, which allowed the continuation of the treatment. The patient achieved a good partial response and an ongoing PFS of more than 12 months.

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of workplace violence (WPV) against nurses in Oman's psychiatric hospitals and explore associated factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between October and December 2021 and included all tertiary mental healthcare hospitals in Oman (Al Masarra Hospital and Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat, Oman). The participants completed a sociodemographic survey and a questionnaire on WPV in the health sector. Results: A total of 106 participants (response rate = 80.3%) were included in this study. Most were female (52.8%) and Omani (72.6%) and aged 30-39 years. WPV prevalence was high (90.6%), with verbal (86.8%) and physical violence (57.5%) being the most common types. WPV incidents were more frequent on weekdays (26.4%) and during morning shifts (34%), while 81.1% of the nurses worked in shifts and had direct physical contact with patients (83.0%). The majority (92.5%) were aware of standardised WPV reporting procedures and 89.7% confirmed the presence of such procedures in hospitals. WPV was more prevalent among nurses in inpatient wards (P = 0.047). Conclusion: WPV against nurses in Omani psychiatric hospitals is alarmingly high. Future studies should investigate contributing factors among healthcare providers and emphasise violence prevention by providing staff nurses with effective training to handle violent incidents involving psychiatric patients.

Objectives: This study aimed to determine the rate and severity patterns of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and identify antenatal and postnatal factors associated with BPD in preterm infants <32 weeks of gestational age (GA). Methods: This retrospective observational study included preterm neonates <32 weeks of gestation admitted into the neonatal intensive care unit between January 2010 and December 2017 at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat, Oman. A data set of antenatal and perinatal factors were collected. BPD was defined as the need for oxygen and/or respiratory support at 36 weeks post-menstrual age (PMA). Infants with and without BPD were compared in their antenatal and perinatal factors. Results: A total of 589 preterm infants <32 weeks were admitted. Among them, 505 (85.7%) survived to 36 weeks' PMA and 90 (17.8%) had BPD. The combined BPD and mortality rate was 28.4%. Grades 1, 2 and 3 BPD constituted 77.8%, 7.8% and 14.4%, respectively. BPD was associated with lower GA, lower birth weight, need for intubation at resuscitation, lower Apgar scores, longer duration of ventilation, surfactant therapy and higher rates of neonatal morbidities. On binary logistic regression analysis, predictors of BPD were longer duration of ventilation, intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH) and necrotising enterocolitis (NEC). Conclusion: In an Omani centre, 17.8% of preterm infants (<32 weeks GA) developed BPD. Various perinatal and neonatal factors were associated with BPD. However, longer duration of ventilation, IVH grades 1 and 2 and NEC stages II and III were significant predictors. Future multicentre research is necessary to provide the overall prevalence of BPD in Oman to help optimise the resources for BPD prevention and management in preterm infants.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study aimed to report the demographic features, clinical presentation, pathological types and long-term outcomes of patients diagnosed with endometrial cancer (EC) in Oman. EC is the sixth most common cancer in women worldwide and the fifth most common cancer in women in Oman. Survival outcomes of EC have not been reported previously from Oman. Methods: This retrospective study was carried out on consecutive patients treated at the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat, Oman, between 2008 and 2020. Survival was estimated using the Kaplan and Meier method. Results: A total of 50 patients with EC were included. The median age was 61 years (range: 31-86 years), and 72% of the patients had type I histology. Most patients were diagnosed with stage IA and IB EC (49% and 20%, respectively), and the majority had grade 1 or 2 tumours (40% and 34%, respectively). Overall, the 5-year survival and 10-year survival rates were estimated to be 70% and 56%, respectively. Weight (>75 kg) and body mass index (>30 kg/m2) were significantly associated with better survival. Tumour histology (type I versus type II or carcinosarcoma), grade (1 versus 2 versus 3) and stage (IA or IB versus II-IV) were associated with better overall survival (P = 0.007, P <0.0001 and P <0.0003, respectively). Patients diagnosed with EC with co-morbidities, other than obesity, had inferior survival compared to those without co-morbidities. Conclusion: Median age at presentation, histological sub-type, clinical stage and outcomes are comparable to the published literature. Almost two-thirds of the patients were obese. These data could be used as a benchmark for outcomes of EC in the region.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Caring for individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a highly demanding task that can adversely affect the physical and psychological well-being of caregivers. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the burden experienced by caregivers of patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) in Oman and explore the factors associated with this burden, including demographic and medical characteristics. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional was employed. Caregiver burden was assessed, and demographic and medical variables were examined among caregivers of HD patients. A total of 326 unpaid family caregivers completed the Zarit Burden Interview scale, demographics and some medical variables. Linear multiple regression analyses were conducted to identify factors linked to caregiver burden. RESULTS: Of the caregivers, 62.9% reported a minimal burden, 21.8% experienced mild-to-moderate burden, 8.6% faced moderate-to-severe burden, and 6.7% encountered a severe burden. The final multiple regression model demonstrated statistical significance compared to the constant (F = 8.68, p < 0.001), with eight predictors explaining 18% of the variance, and caregivers' satisfaction with health emerged as the only significant predictor. CONCLUSION: A substantial portion of caregivers reported minimal burden. These findings suggest the need for further in-depth investigations into factors contributing to this favourable outcome. Furthermore, caregivers' satisfaction with health was the only significant predictor of their burden. Healthcare providers need to give special attention to this point and conduct periodic assessments of the primary caregivers' health. Implementing improvements in the healthcare system based on these findings could enhance the overall caregiving experience for HD patients and their caregivers.

ABSTRACT

The prevalence of cancer is expected to increase worldwide for reasons related to a lack of awareness of cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Implementing cancer education programs in schools in the developing countries with similar demographic, economic, and health transition to that of Oman is crucial for enhancing students' cancer knowledge and promoting healthy behavior. This study aims to explore the perceptions of education, policymakers, and teachers regarding the inclusion of cancer education in secondary school curriculum. The study employed a qualitative method, conducting semi-structured interviews with ten education policymakers and ten school teachers. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, and analyzed verbatim and qualitatively using the framework approach. Three main themes have emerged: (1) perception of the importance of cancer education inclusion within the school curriculum, (2) the perception of cancer education implementation in schools, and (3) the perceived challenges of introducing cancer education in schools. Policymakers and teachers in Oman recognize the importance of cancer education in schools and emphasized the need to prioritize it due to the increasing prevalence of the disease and the belief that negative lifestyle habits played a role in its increased prevalence. Implementing cancer education programs in schools is essential in improving students' knowledge of cancer and health behaviors. Collaboration between the department of school health in ministry of education and in ministry of health and incorporating cancer education into different school activities can be beneficial. However, the perceived challenges of cancer education in schools include the decision on the priority of cancer education among other topics, the required procedures to introduce cancer education in schools, and the financial and logistics obligations of implementing cancer education programs. Therefore, addressing the financial and logistic requirements is essential to overcome the associated challenges for implementing cancer education programs within the school curriculum.

The significant increase in the pollution of heavy metals and organic pollutants, their stable nature, and their high toxicity are gradually becoming a global crisis. In a recent study, a comprehensive assessment of the spatial distribution of heavy metals and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs), as well as an assessment of their ecological risks in the sediments of 32 stations located in commercial and industrial areas (Mainly focusing on petrochemical and power industries, desalination plants and transit Ports) of Hormozgan province (East and West of Jask, Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, and Bandar Lengeh) was performed during 2021-2022. The sediment samples were digested with HNO3, HCl and HF solvents. The concentration of heavy metals was determined with furnace and flame systems of atomic absorption spectrometer. The concentration of heavy metals showed significant spatial changes between stations. The ecological assessment indices between the regions indicated that the stations located in Shahid Bahonar Port, Suru Beach, and Khor gorsouzuan had a higher intensity of pollution than other places and significant risks of pollution, especially in terms of Cr and Ni. The average contamination degree (CD) (14.89), modified contamination degree (MCD) (2.48), pollution load index (PLI) (2.32), and potential ecological risk index (PERI) (100.30) showed the sediments in the area of Shahid Bahonar Port, Suru beach and Khor gorsouzuan, experience significant to high levels of pollution, especially Cr and Ni. Using contamination factor (CF) and Geoaccumulation index (Igeo), Cr was considered the most dangerous metal in the studied areas. Based on the global classification of marine sediment quality for the concentrations of TPHs, the sediments of the studied stations were classified as non-polluted to low pollution. In all regions, indices of the PELq (General toxicity) and CF (Contamination factor) were much lower than 0.1 and 1 respectively, showing the absence of adverse biological effects caused by TPHs in sediments. It is necessary to consider comprehensive and impressive strategies to control and reduce pollution of heavy metals, especially in the areas of Shahid Bahonar Port, Suru Beach, and Khor gorsouzuan, so that the sources of this pollution are required to be identified and managed.

ABSTRACT

Protein O-linked mannose (O-Man) glycosylation is an evolutionary conserved posttranslational modification that fulfills important biological roles during embryonic development. Three nonredundant enzyme families, POMT1/POMT2, TMTC1-4, and TMEM260, selectively coordinate the initiation of protein O-Man glycosylation on distinct classes of transmembrane proteins, including α-dystroglycan, cadherins, and plexin receptors. However, a systematic investigation of their substrate specificities is lacking, in part due to the ubiquitous expression of O-Man glycosyltransferases in cells, which precludes analysis of pathway-specific O-Man glycosylation on a proteome-wide scale. Here, we apply a targeted workflow for membrane glycoproteomics across five human cell lines to extensively map O-Man substrates and genetically deconstruct O-Man initiation by individual and combinatorial knockout of O-Man glycosyltransferase genes. We established a human cell library for the analysis of substrate specificities of individual O-Man initiation pathways by quantitative glycoproteomics. Our results identify 180 O-Man glycoproteins, demonstrate new protein targets for the POMT1/POMT2 pathway, and show that TMTC1-4 and TMEM260 pathways widely target distinct Ig-like protein domains of plasma membrane proteins involved in cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix interactions. The identification of O-Man on Ig-like folds adds further knowledge on the emerging concept of domain-specific O-Man glycosylation which opens for functional studies of O-Man-glycosylated adhesion molecules and receptors.
