ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) play a vital role in safeguarding the rights and interests of both research participants and researchers. However, China initiated the establishment of its own IRB system relatively late in comparison to international standards. Despite commendable progress, there is a pressing need to strengthen the organizational capacity building of Chinese IRBs. Hence, this study aims to analyze the key factors driving the enhancement of organizational capacity within these committees. METHOD: The cross-sectional survey for this research was conducted from July 2020 to January 2022. Following the statistical grouping based on the "2020 China Health Statistical Yearbook", a systematic investigation of IRBs in various provinces of China was carried out. In-depth interviews and questionnaire surveys were conducted with the chairpersons and administrative executives (or secretaries) of highly cooperative IRBs. Subsequently, data were collected from 107 IRBs. Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) was employed as the method to analyze the factors influencing the organizational capacity of medical ethics committees and explore the diverse combinations of these factors. RESULTS: Through a singular necessary condition analysis, the variable "protection of rights and interests" emerges as a critical factor contributing to the robust construction of Institutional Review Boards Institutional Review Boards (IRBs). Conversely, the variables of "lack of member ability, absence of review process, and deficiency in the supervision mechanism" collectively constitute a sufficient condition leading to weaker IRB construction. The state analysis uncovers three interpretation modes: member ability-oriented (M1), system process-oriented mode (M2), and resource system-oriented mode (M3). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study are effectively explicable using the "Triangular Force" model proposed for the hypothesis of IRBs' organizational capacity, which provides a solid foundation for the development of organizational capabilities in IRBs. To enhance the organizational capacity of IRBs in China, it is imperative to elevate the competence of committee members and strengthen team development. This can be achieved by establishing a comprehensive regulatory framework and refining procedural protocols. Moreover, clarifying the organizational structure and optimizing resource allocation are essential steps in bolstering the overall organizational capabilities of these committees.

ABSTRACT

Social inequalities are partly caused by habitual organizational practices. In this vein, to overcome those, organizations now need to develop new organizational capabilities aimed at enhancing their attention towards societal issues. In our study, we apply the theory of mindfulness to explain how it may help organizations overcome habitual organizing that fuels social inequalities. Guided by the microfoundational perspective of organizational capability, we conceptualize individual characteristics, processes, and structures that collectively form mindfulness capability for social justice. We perceive it as an organizational capability that reflects the extent to which an organization possesses a collective social justice awareness, i.e., awareness of the impact on social justice in society through its organizational practices. We argue that, when adopted by organizations, mindfulness, by increasing the awareness of the organizational impact on society, helps notice, examine, and question the correctness of taken-for-granted organizational practices. From our perspective, this new capability will lead to changes in organizational practices that fuel social inequalities. Our study contributes to the literature on sustainable organizational development and mindfulness research in organizations. Managerial implications and future research directions are also discussed.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To evaluate the current organizational capacity and maturity of private hospitals in China, in references improving their organizational capacity and promoting their sustainable development. Methods:The purposive sampling method was used from May to November 2019, and private hospitals of continuous operation for 5 years or above were selected for a questionnaire survey. Self-evaluation was made on the organization capacity of these hospitals in such 12 aspects as positioning, normalization, decision making, execution, supervision, marketing, coerciveness, risk exposure, innovation, learning capacity and leadership. Based on existing models, five levels of maturity models from low to high were established, namely that of business in difficulty, that of basic stable operation, that of stable development, that of expanding business, and that of independent branding.Factor analysis was used for structural efficiency analysis, the questionnaires were subject to a descriptive analysis, and a maturity scoring was obtained based on self-evaluation of organizational capacity. Results:A total of 45 non-public hospitals were investigated in this study, and 450 valid questionnaires were recovered. The factor analysis classified the organizational capacity into basic capacity, core capacity and development capacity. The organizational capability of the hospitals scored in average 4.14 points; the development capacity scoring(3.87 points) was lower than basic capacity(4.16 points) and core capacity(4.06 points). 80% of the private hospitals were in the basic stable stage or stable development stage. Conclusions:Private hospitals feature in general lower maturity, good basic capacity and core capacity, while they tend to have weak development capacity, not to mention innovation and construction of learning organizations.

ABSTRACT

Good manufacturing practice (GMP) is advocated and implemented as a standardized procedure for manufacturing dietary supplements. However, in Japan as a case, only half of the manufacturers in this field so far adopt it. To address this issue, the present study aims to explore the effect of key characteristics of a company on the adoption of and compliance with GMP for dietary supplements. The focus is on the effect of expertise in the pharmaceutical industry. The relationships between company characteristics and the adoption of GMP were analyzed for 90 manufacturers in the dietary supplement industry in Japan. A binomial logistic regression analysis showed that each of the following three factors had a positive and significant effect on the company's adoption of GMP: company size in terms of revenue (odds ratio = 1.04, p = 0.019), possession of a manufacturing license for pharmaceutical products (13.7, p = 0.003), and number of own product categories manufactured (3.93, p = 0.00009). These findings strongly suggest that the company's manufacturing capability of pharmaceutical products works as a key driver for the better adoption of a quality standard in the dietary supplement industry in Japan. Few considerations were made for conditions of the adoption and implementation of GMP. The present study empirically contributes by providing key clues for issues in the dietary supplement industry and by forming a theoretical base for policymakers and the regulatory authorities.

ABSTRACT

This research studies the influence of entrepreneurial competencies on the performance of small enterprises by building a causal model using data obtained from Spanish entrepreneurs. In this model entrepreneurs' competencies influence firm performance, competitive scope, and organizational capability in a direct or indirect way are explained. We have found support for most of our hypotheses. Results indicate that entrepreneurial competence plays an influential role in organizational capability and competitive scope, and also has a direct effect on firm performance. The use of organizational capabilities affects positively the firm performance and it partially mediates the relationship between entrepreneurial competence and firm performance. Although competitive scope is not significantly related to business growth, it is a strong predictor of other performance dimensions, such as efficiency and relative performance. Organizational capability is a strong predictor of competitive scope. The implications and future research directions are discussed.
