ABSTRACT

Porous coordination polymers (PCPs) are an excellent class of porous crystalline materials with tunable properties and intriguing potential applications spanning multiple disciplines. In this work, we report the synthesis and characterization of a PCP (HI-103) based on 4,4'-dithiodibenzoic acid ligand and zinc nitrate with two DMF molecules residing in the porous network. The stability of the porous network was analyzed by heating the compound at 60.0 °C for two days, and the structural analysis revealed a new PCP (HI-104) was formed with one of the DMF molecules, indicating a single-crystal to single-crystal (SCSC) transformation. The solvent molecules were completely removed by extensive drying (HI-103-dry), and the integrity of the porous network was verified by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and thermogravimetric analysis. The reversibility of SCSC transformation was confirmed by treating HI-103-dry with DMF molecules, resulting in HI-103 after five days. The adsorption studies of HI-103-dry with other solvents revealed that SCSC transformation was not observed for DMA and DEA, but some structural changes were observed in the presence of DMSO. The adsorption studies performed in the presence of an equimolar mixture of DMF, DMA, and DMA indicated that HI-103-dry could selectively adsorb DMF molecules from the analogous mixture.

ABSTRACT

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is considered an innovative and promising tool for estimating community exposure to a wide range of chemical and biological compounds by analyzing wastewater. Despite scholars' interest in WBE studies, there are uncertainties and limitations associated with this approach. This current review focuses on the feasibility of the WBE approach in assessing environmental pollutants, including pesticides, heavy metals, phthalates, bisphenols, and personal care products (PCPs). Limitations and challenges of WBE studies are initially discussed, and then future perspectives, gaps, and recommendations are presented in this review. One of the key limitations of this approach is the selection and identification of appropriate biomarkers in studies. Selecting biomarkers considering the basic requirements of a human exposure biomarker is the most important criterion for validating this new approach. Assessing the stability of biomarkers in wastewater is crucial for reliable comparisons of substance consumption in the population. However, directly analyzing wastewater does not provide a clear picture of biomarker stability. This uncertainty affects the reliability of temporal and spatial comparisons. Various uncertainties also arise from different steps involved in WBE. These uncertainties include sewage sampling, exogenous sources, analytical measurements, back-calculation, and estimation of the population under investigation. Further research is necessary to ensure that measured pollutant levels accurately reflect human excretion. Utilizing data from WBE can support healthcare policy in assessing exposure to environmental pollutants in the general population. Moreover, WBE seems to be a valuable tool for biomarkers that indicate healthy conditions, lifestyle, disease identification, and exposure to pollutants. Although this approach has the potential to serve as a biomonitoring tool in large communities, it is necessary to monitor more metabolites from wastewater to enhance future studies.

ABSTRACT

Healthcare costs in the United States (US) exceed those of comparable nations without yielding better outcomes. Factors contributing to this include lack of cost transparency, limited outpatient resources due to primary care provider shortages, and high patient volumes, where patients are not educated on differentials and the stepwise process of workup. Addressing these issues could curb unnecessary hospitalizations and expenses. A 31-year-old woman with hypertension, alcohol use, anemia, and obesity experienced paresthesias in September 2022. At her first visit, the exam was consistent with decreased bilateral plantar sensation; however, there was no weakness or gait abnormality. This was not consistent with a focal neurologic distribution. Despite multiple ER visits, her condition persisted. Initial evaluations included potassium replacement ($80 for labs, $13 for tablet), nonacute head CT ($1500), and benign CT L-spine ($2500). Subsequent hospitalization led to brain MRI/MRA head/neck ($6700) and serum workup ($240), revealing deficiencies in vitamin D, folate, and B12. Treatment involved prednisone taper ($30) and supplemental vitamins ($35), with lifestyle recommendations ($0). After evaluating CompuNet lab costs and equivalent market imaging prices, potential savings exceeding $15,000 were identified through more focused and cost-conscious initial testing including vitamin studies and outpatient management, reducing hospitalizations and imaging expenses. Rising healthcare costs in the US are driven by various factors, yet fail to correlate with improved outcomes. Our case argues that enhancing access to primary care, promoting cost transparency, and educating patients on healthcare decisions are crucial for mitigating excessive spending.

ABSTRACT

Phenylmethylsiloxanes, as modified products of dimethylsiloxanes, have been used in personal care products (PCPs) and household appliances, with indoor dust serving as one potential reservoir due to their particle-binding properties. This study measured six isomers of two phenylmethylsiloxanes (P3 and P4) in PCPs (99 %) intakes of phenylmethylsiloxanes for adults, while dust ingestion/adsorption (0.19 ng/d) may play important roles for toddlers/infants with little usage of phenylmethylsiloxanes-containing PCPs. Additionally, total daily intakes of PhMeSi(OH)2 (0.30-0.84 ng/d) via ingestion and dermal absorption of dust were higher than P3 (0.06-0.31 ng/d) and P4 (0.02-0.09 ng/d), suggesting exposure risk of degradation product of phenylmethylsiloxanes deserving attention.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic is described as a global health crisis. The most typical symptoms of infection prompt most patients to visit a primary care clinic (PCC). From December 2020, COVID-19 can be diagnosed in European Union countries on the basis of a positive antigen test result. These tests are widely used at the primary care level. Material and methods: The analysis covered the period from 01.09.2021 to 28.02.2022. Statistical analysis was performed on the results of a study of 1,849 patients who underwent antigen testing in primary care clinics at the Kashubian Medical Centre (KCM) in Sierakowice and data published by the Ministry of Health on the results of tests performed from the whole country, Pomeranian Voivodeship and Kartuzy County. Results: Statistical analysis showed that the results of studies conducted in KCM in Sierakowice (antigen-only tests) were consistent with the results of studies conducted in Kartuzy County, Pomeranian Voivodeship and nationwide (molecular PCR - Polymerase Chain Reaction and antigen tests). Conclusions: Rapid antigen tests are a useful diagnostic tool in the fight against the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic because of their easy availability and simplicity of performance, and their widespread dissemination, especially in primary care settings, could contribute to multibillion-dollar savings in the health care system.

ABSTRACT

Marine-coastal ecosystems are rapidly transforming because of climate change (CC). At the same time, the impacts of emerging organic contaminants (i.e., organic UV-filters) on these ecosystems are intensifying. In the Mediterranean, the consequences of these disturbances are occurring at a fast pace making this area a potential sentinel site to be investigated. While singular effects of organic UV-filters or CC-related factors on marine biota have been relatively described, their combined impact is still largely unknown. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess the long-term responses of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis towards anticipated salinity changes (decreases-S20 or increases-S40) when exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of the UV-filter 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC). An integrated multi-biomarker approach was applied, featuring general and oxidative stress, antioxidant and biotransformation enzyme capacity, energy metabolism, genotoxicity, and neurotoxicity biomarkers. Results showed that both projected salinities, considered separately, exerted non-negligible impacts on mussels' health status, with greater biological impairments found at S 40. Combining both stressors resulted in an evident increase in mussels' susceptibility to the UV-filter, which exacerbated the toxicity of 4-MBC. The dominant influence of salinity in the climate change-contaminant interaction played a crucial role in this outcome. The most severe scenario occurred when S 20 was combined with 4-MBC. In this situation, mussels exhibited a decrease in filtration rate, metabolic capacity and deployment of energy reserves increased, with an upregulation of biotransformation and inhibition of antioxidant enzyme activities. This exposure also led to the observation of cellular and DNA damage, as well as an increase in AChE activity. Furthermore, salinity-dependent bioaccumulation patterns were evaluated revealing that the lowest values in contaminated mussels are found at S 20. Overall, the present findings provide evidence that projected CC/pollutant scenarios may represent high risks for mussels' populations, with global relevant implications for the ecosystem level.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Factors such as age, vital signs, renal function, Killip class, cardiac arrest, elevated cardiac biomarker levels, and ST deviation predict survival in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). However, the existing risk assessment tools lack comprehensive consideration of catheter-related factors, and short-term prognostic predictors are unknown. This study aimed to clarify in-hospital prognostic predictors in hospitalized patients with AMI. METHODS: Five hundred and thirty-six patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for AMI were divided into non-survivor (n = 36) and survivor (n = 500) groups. Coronary risk factors, laboratory findings, angiographic findings, and clinical courses were compared between the two groups. Multiple logistic regression was used to analyze in-hospital death in pre- and post-PCI phases. RESULTS: In the pre-PCI phase, multiple logistic regression analysis revealed several predictors of in-hospital death, including systolic blood pressure [odds ratio (OR) = 0.985, p = 0.023)], Killip class ≥2 (OR = 14.051, p <0.001), and chronic kidney disease (OR = 4.859, p = 0.040). In the post-PCI phase, multiple logistic regression analysis revealed additional predictors of in-hospital death, including Killip class ≥2 (OR = 5.982, p = 0.039), presence of lesions in the left main trunk (OR = 51.381, p = 0.044), utilization of intra-aortic balloon pumps and percutaneous cardiopulmonary support (OR = 6.141, p = 0.016), and presence of multi-vessel disease (OR = 6.323, p = 0.022). CONCLUSION: Predictors of in-hospital death in AMI extend beyond conventional risk factors to include culprit lesions, mechanical support, and multi-vessel disease that manifest post-PCI.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this research was to determine the content of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and nickel (Ni) in selected lipsticks and face foundations of different price categories and the health risk assessment associated with these toxic elements via dermal and oral exposure. The samples (10 lipstick and 10 face foundations) were purchased from local markets in Belgrade, Serbia. The samples were prepared by acid digestion and analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry (flame atomization for Cd, Pb, and Ni and electrothermal atomization for As). Arsenic was found in 50% of lipstick samples and in only two face foundation samples with the highest concentration of 0.28 mg/kg in the lipstick sample. Lead concentration was in the range of 1.15 to 5.12 mg/kg in ten samples. Nickel was found in five samples out of 20, with the highest concentration of 4.20 mg/kg. Cadmium was found in only one face foundation sample in the cheaper price range (1.11 mg/kg). The obtained results indicate that concentrations of As, Pb, Cd, and Ni were within the permissible limits according to Serbian legislation. Health risk associated with these elements was assessed as non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk. Obtained hazard quotients (HQs) and hazard indexes (HIs) were below 1, indicating the absence of significant non-carcinogenic health risk due to exposure to these toxic elements (TEs). The carcinogenic risk results show that investigated cosmetic products can be considered low-risky due to the possibility of causing malignant disease.

ABSTRACT

In this study, we explore the effects of Poria cocos mushroom polysaccharides (PCPs) on the quality and DNA methylation of the cryopreserved spermatozoa of Shanghai white pigs. A total of 24 ejaculates (three ejaculate samples per boar) from eight Shanghai white pigs were manually collected. The pooled semen was diluted with a based extender supplemented with different concentrations of PCPs (0, 300, 600, 900, 1200, and 1500 µg/mL). Once thawed, the quality of the spermatozoa and their antioxidant function were assessed. In the meantime, the effect of spermatozoa DNA methylation was also analyzed. The results show that compared with the control group, 600 µg/mL of PCPs significantly improves the spermatozoa viability (p < 0.05). The motility and plasma membrane integrity of the frozen-thawed spermatozoa are significantly higher after treatment with 600, 900, and 1200 µg/mL of PCPs compared with the control group (p < 0.05). In comparison with the control group, the percentages of acrosome integrity and mitochondrial activity are significantly enhanced after the application of 600 and 900 µg/mL PCPs (p < 0.05). The reactive oxygen species (ROS), the malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and the glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity, in comparison with the control group, are significantly decreased in all groups with PCPs (all p < 0.05). The enzymatic activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in spermatozoa is significantly higher in the treatment with 600 µg/mL of PCPs than in the other groups (p < 0.05). As compared with the control group, a significant increase in the catalase (CAT) level is found in the groups with PCPs at 300, 600, 900, and 1200 µg/mL (all p < 0.05). In comparison with the control group, the 5-methylcytosine (5-mC) levels are significantly decreased in all groups with PCPs (all p < 0.05). As a result of these findings, a certain amount of PCPs (600-900 µg/mL) added to the cryodiluent can significantly improve the quality of Shanghai white pig spermatozoa and can also reduce the methylation of spermatozoa DNA caused by cryopreservation. This treatment strategy may establish a foundation for the cryopreservation of semen from pigs.

ABSTRACT

A rapid and sensitive method based on ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) was developed for the simultaneous determination of 12 typical personal care products (PCPs) in human urine. These PCPs included five paraben preservatives (PBs), five benzophenone UV absorbers (BPs), and two antibacterial agents. Accordingly, 1 mL of the urine sample was mixed with 500 µL of ß-glucuronidase-ammonium acetate buffer solution (enzymatic activities are 500 units/mL) and 75 µL of a mixed internal standard working solution (internal standard contents are 7.5 ng), followed by enzymatic hydrolysis overnight (≥16 h) at 37 ℃ in a water bath. The 12 targeted analytes were enriched and cleaned up using an Oasis HLB solid phase extraction column. Separation was performed on an Acquity BEH C18 column (100 mm×2.1 mm, 1.7 µm) using an acetonitrile-water system as the mobile phase, in negative electrospray ionization (ESI-) multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode, for target detection and stable isotope internal standard quantification. The optimal MS conditions were established by optimizing the instrument parameters and comparing two analytical columns (Acquity BEH C18 and Acquity UPLC HSS T3) as well as different types of mobile phases (methanol or acetonitrile as the organic phase) to achieve better chromatographic separation. In order to obtain higher enzymatic and extraction efficiency, different enzymatic conditions, solid phase extraction columns, and elution conditions were investigated. The final results showed that methyl parabens (MeP), benzophenone-3 (BP-3), and triclosan (TCS) showed good linearities in the ranges of 4.00-800, 4.00-800 and 5.00-200 µg/L, respectively, the other targeted compounds showed good linearities in the ranges of 1.00-200 µg/L. The correlation coefficients were all greater than 0.999. The method detection limits (MDLs) were in the range of 0.06-1.09 µg/L, and the method quantification limits (MQLs) ranged from 0.08 to 3.63 µg/L. At three spiked levels, the average recoveries of the 12 targeted analytes ranged from 89.5% to 111.8%. The intra-day and inter-day precisions were 3.7%-8.9% and 2.0%-10.6%, respectively. The results of the matrix effect assessment showed that MeP, ethyl paraben (EtP), and benzophenone-2 (BP-2) exhibited strong matrix effects (26.7%-103.8%); propyl paraben (PrP) exhibited moderate matrix effects (79.2%-112.0%); and the other eight target analytes exhibited weak matrix effects (83.3%-113.8%). The matrix effects of the 12 targeted analytes after correction using the stable isotopic internal standard method ranged from 91.9% to 110.1%. The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of the 12 PCPs in 127 urine samples. Ten typical PCPs were detected, with the overall detection rates ranging from 1.7% to 99.7%, except for benzyl paraben (BzP) and benzophenone-8 (BP-8). The results revealed that the population in this area was widely exposed to PCPs, especially MeP, EtP and PrP; the detection rates and concentrations of these PCPs were found to be very high. Our analytical method is simple and sensitive, and it is expected to be an effective tool for biomonitoring PCPs in human urine samples as part of environmental health studies.

ABSTRACT

A high quality of knowledge and how it is communicated by healthcare professionals (HCPs) let the patient understand coeliac disease (CD) and result in better adherence to therapeutic recommendations. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to assess the opinion of Polish respondents with CD on the comprehension of CD among Polish HCPs. The analysis was based on 796 responses from patients (the members of the Polish Coeliac Society) with confirmed CD diagnosis (224; 28.1% children and 572; 71.9% adults). The most frequently consulted HCPs regarding CD symptoms in the analysed group were gastroenterologists, and various support groups and associations for CD patients. Furthermore, their comprehension of CD was rated best, as 89.3% (n = 552) of the patients who had contact with support groups and associations classified their knowledge on CD as good. More than a half of the respondents (n = 310, 56.6%) who had contact with general practitioners (GPs) due to their symptoms, rated the doctor's knowledge on CD as bad. Nurses' comprehension on CD was classified as bad by 45 (52.3%) respondents who had contact with a nurse. Out of 294 Polish patients with CD who had contact with a dietician, 247 (84.0%) assessed that the dietician communicated their knowledge on CD well. The respondents rated that GPs and nurses communicated their knowledge on CD in the worst manner (60.4% and 58.1%, respectively). Out of 796 respondents, 792 (99.5%) provided information about the number of appointments with GPs due to symptoms that occurred prior to CD diagnosis. The respondents had contact with GPs 13 863 times before obtaining a CD diagnosis due to their symptoms. After the establishment of a CD diagnosis, the number of appointments with GPs decreased to 3850, and the average number of appointments decreased from 17.8 to 5.1. The respondents assessed that the knowledge on CD of HCPs is not satisfactory. The work of support groups and associations on CD, who promote reliable CD diagnosis and treatment methods, should be promoted. The cooperation between various HCPs needs to be encouraged, which may lead to better compliance.

ABSTRACT

Ozone is widely used to inactivate bacteria, fungi, and viruses. In recent years, the treatment of itchy skin diseases (eczema and atopic dermatitis) using trace ozone has also received attention. However, the feasibility of using trace ozone to replace personal care products (PCPs) has rarely been analyzed. In this study, the applicability of trace ozone was evaluated in terms of its efficiency for microbial inactivation in three types of skin microbiomes, cleaning performance on simulated human hair and epidermis, safety for simulated human hair, and contribution to emission reduction. The results revealed that at a 10:1 ratio of ozonated water to bacterial suspension, the inactivation ratios of Malassezia, C. albicans, and S. epidermidis reached 99.63%, 83.47%, and 100%, respectively. In addition, the cleaning performance of an ozone solution (0.4 mg/L) for simulated human skin contaminated with carbon black and sebum could reach 95.89% and 95.63%, respectively, with 5 min of washing. The average scores were 0.40 and 0.37 after 5 min and 10 min of ozone treatments, respectively, indicating that trace ozone does not significantly damage simulated human hair. Results also revealed that the total emissions of COD, TP, and TN would be reduced by 1.29×106, 3.55×103, and 3.63×103 mg/ (household · year), respectively, if PCPs are replaced by trace ozone. In short, our findings indicate that trace ozone is a potential alternative to PCPs. By replacing PCPs with trace ozone, the use of synthetic chemical products can be reduced and carbon emissions from oil extraction can be countered.

ABSTRACT

Exploring new porous coordination polymers (PCPs) that have tunable structure and conductivity is attractive but remains challenging. Herein, fine pore structure engineering by ligand conformation control of naphthalene diimide (NDI)-based semiconducting PCPs with π stacking-dependent conductivity tunability is achieved. The π stacking distances and ligand conformation in these isoreticular PCPs were modulated by employing metal centers with different coordination geometries. As a result, three conjugated PCPs (Co-pyNDI, Ni-pyNDI, and Zn-pyNDI) with varying pore structure and conductivity were obtained. Their crystal structures were determined by three-dimensional electron diffraction. The through-space charge transfer and tunable pore structure in these PCPs result in modulated selectivity and sensitivity in gas sensing. Zn-pyNDI can serve as a room-temperature operable chemiresistive sensor selective to acetone.

Flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one kind of stimuli-responsive materials that exhibit reversible structural transformations in response to external stimuli. Exploring and understanding the stimuli response behavior of flexible MOFs is challenging, as it involves weak host-guest interaction. We report here the unique flexibility of MOF Zn(int)(Ad) (TIF-A1, Hint = isonicotinic acid, Had = adenine) induced by acetylene adsorption. TIF-A1 is rigid toward most gas molecules, while only C2H2 can induce the flexibility of TIF-A1. C2H2-loaded TIF-A1 is characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and molecular modeling. It is revealed that the flexibility of TIF-A1 originates from the strong interaction between acetylene and the framework, which pushes the rotation of the int ligand and the expansion of the framework simultaneously. This work is helpful in deeply understanding the flexibility of MOFs and guides exploring new flexible MOFs in the future.

Context: The need for physicians qualified in the field of occupational safety and health (OSH) is growing with the growth of manufacturing and service sectors where maximum number of work-related morbidity and mortality occur. Aims: This article aims to assess the effectiveness and feasibility of the certificate course in occupational safety and health for training and capacity building of primary care physicians in OSH. Methods and Material: Guideline for reporting evidence-based practice educational interventions and teaching (GREET) was used for describing educational interventions. The outcome was assessed by comparing the mean scores. t test with P < 0.005 was considered a level of significance. Results: The result showed significant improvement in the cumulative pre- and post-test scores after each module. The certificate course is suitable for adult learning as there was no intergroup difference in knowledge after the program. Consistent with the findings, the improvement scores indicate that training has made a difference in the knowledge and learning of the trained physicians. Conclusions: This customized training intervention has high potential for scaling up while optimally addressing the scarcity of trained physicians in the OSH in high population density settings like India where a high number of vulnerable workforces work in the informal economy.

ABSTRACT

Background: To evaluate the impact of training primary care physicians (PCPs) in the use of the practical approach lung health-global alliance against chronic respiratory diseases (PAL-GARD) upon their diagnostic skills. Methods: In this real-life three-phase study, PCPs were allocated to a PAL-GARD training or control group. Patients who sought a primary care health facility due to cough, dyspnea and/or wheezing were eligible. The clinical diagnoses made by PCPs during the baseline and post-intervention phase were audited by a panel of pulmonologists. Kappa inter-rater statistics was used to compare agreement between PCPs and pulmonologists. Results: Thirty PCPs evaluated 536 patients, 358 in the intervention and 178 in the control group. According to Kappa, there was an increase in the agreement in the diagnosis of asthma (from 0.546 to 0.638), tuberculosis (from 0.393 to 0.655) and acute respiratory infections (ARI) (from 0.577 to 0.584) was observed in the PAL-GARD group, but there was a reduction in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (from 0.430 to 0.284). Conclusions: In this setting, PAL-GARD-based guide and training improved the clinical diagnosis of common respiratory diseases with the exception of COPD.

ABSTRACT

In the current era of T cell-based immunotherapies, it is crucial to understand which types of MHC-presented T cell antigens are produced by tumor cells. In addition to linear peptide antigens, chimeric peptides are generated through proteasome-catalyzed peptide splicing (PCPS). Whether such spliced peptides are abundantly presented by MHC is highly disputed because of disagreement in computational analyses of mass spectrometry data of MHC-eluted peptides. Moreover, such mass spectrometric analyses cannot elucidate how much spliced peptides contribute to the pool of immunogenic antigens. In this Perspective, we explain the significance of knowing the contribution of spliced peptides for accurate analyses of peptidomes on one hand, and to serve as a potential source of targetable tumor antigens on the other hand. Toward a strategy for mass spectrometry independent estimation of the contribution of PCPS to the immunopeptidome, we first reviewed methodologies to identify MHC-presented spliced peptide antigens expressed by tumors. Data from these identifications allowed us to compile three independent datasets containing 103, 74, and 83 confirmed T cell antigens from cancer patients. Only 3.9%, 1.4%, and between 0% and 7.2% of these truly immunogenic antigens are produced by PCPS, therefore providing a marginal contribution to the pool of immunogenic tumor antigens. We conclude that spliced peptides will not serve as a comprehensive source to expand the number of targetable antigens for immunotherapies.

ABSTRACT

Dyslipidemia is a fundamental risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and can worsen the prognosis, if unaddressed. Lipid guidelines are still evolving as dyslipidemia is affecting newer patient subsets. However, these guidelines are governed by regional demographics and ethnic data. Primary care practitioners (PCPs) are the first to offer treatment, and hence placed early in the healthcare continuum. PCPs shoulder a huge responsibility in early detection of dyslipidemia for primary prevention of future cardiovascular (CV) events. Therefore, as members of Cardiovascular RISk Prevention (CRISP) in Asia network, the authors intend to align and shape-up the daily clinical practice workflow for PCPs and have a goal-directed strategy for managing dyslipidemia. This paper reviews the major international lipid guidelines, namely the American and European guidelines, and the regional guidelines from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam to identify their commonalities and heterogeneities. The authors, with a mutual consensus, have put forth, best in-clinic practices for screening, risk assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of dyslipidemia, particularly to reduce the overall risk of CV events, especially in the Asian context. The authors feel that PCPs should be encouraged to work in congruence with patients to decide on best possible therapy, which would be a holistic approach, rather than pursuing a "one-size-fits-all" approach. Since dyslipidemia is a dynamic field, accumulation of high-quality evidence and cross-validation studies in the future are warranted to develop best in-clinic practices at a global level.

​The present study is concerned with an overview of the main aspects of the selective collection from the municipal solid waste in São Paulo City and the limitations of its two automated Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) to tackle the problem of reducing recyclable plastic waste sent to landfills as rejects. The research aimed to characterize the composition of screened mass flows of as-received mixes from the selective collection at the two MRFs through in situ random collection campaigns. The results of the gravimetric analysis have shown that both MRFs provided higher recovery yields (> 40%) for paper, cardboard, Tetrapack®, ferrous and non-ferrous metals (aluminium), akin to some post-consumer plastics (PET, HDPE/LDPE and PP) that ranged from 38% for PP up to 89% for HDPE, Losses in recovery yields of recyclable plastics after the screening process resulted from lack of clear resin label identification, inefficient materials sortation by households and poor recognition capabilities of the MRFs screening devices to target and segregate specific types of plastics such as PS and vinylic. Packaging design complexity, multi-layered material diversity, and food contaminated post-consumer packaging pose further challenges to improve the plastics recovery capabilities of the two MRFs.

Personal care products (PCPs) are contaminants of emerging concern because of their continuous input into the environment. In this study, membrane bioreactor (MBR) and constructed wetland (CW) methods were used to investigate the effect and mechanism of conventional pollutant and PCP removal from greywater. The effluent of both the MBR- and CW-treated greywater met the reclaimed water reuse standard in China. Conventional pollutants and five target PCPs had a higher removal efficiency in the MBR than in the CW. The removal rates of the PCPs, including Tuina musk (AHTN), were >80% using MBR and CW methods. The main pathway of removing PCPs in the MBR was sludge adsorption and biodegradation, whereas the contribution of the membrane module was weak. The main pathway of removing PCPs in the CW was the combined action of plant absorption, microbial biodegradation, and substrate adsorption, depending on the PCP type. Ethyl hexyl methoxycinnamate (EHMC) has strong biological oxidizability and was mainly removed by biodegradation, whereas Jiale musk (HHCB) and AHTN were mainly removed by adsorption. Six types of CW substrates were investigated, and perlite showed the best adsorption effect for the five target PCPs. The optimal substrate adsorption pH was 7. This study provides important technical information on the effective removal of conventional pollutants and PCPs in greywater and the preparation of high-quality reclaimed water.
