ABSTRACT

Pyometra is a very uncommon condition in postmenopausal women that rarely improves with standard antibiotic treatments. It is usually overlooked as the patient presents with vague symptoms. Our case presented a postmenopausal woman with sepsis due to a huge pyometra. Swabs for sensitivity, tubercular gene testing, and basic blood workup were done, and the patient was started on intravenous antibiotic therapy. Pyometra drainage could not be done due to thin, friable uterine walls. When the patient had improved, a clinically total abdominal hysterectomy was done after ruling out malignant causes. Delay in the diagnosis of this condition may lead to perforation, which may, in turn, cause peritonitis, which may gravely affect the patient.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This TRIPLE study was aimed to evaluate the efficacy of polycarbophil vaginal gel (PCV) in treating symptoms of vaginal atrophy (VA) of peri- and post-menopausal women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sexually active women in peri- (n = 29) and post-menopause (n = 54) suffering from VA, were progressively enrolled and treated for 30 days with PCV. Those wishing to continue (n = 73) were treated for additional 180 days. PCV was administered as one application twice a week. The vaginal health index (VHI; range 5 to 25) and the visual analogue score (VAS range for 0 to 100 mm for each item) for vaginal dryness, irritation, and pain at intercourse, along with the global symptoms score (GSS; range 1 to 15) and treatment safety, were evaluated at baseline and after 30 days. In those continuing the treatment an evaluation was performed after additional 180 days. RESULTS: Women in peri and post-menopause were of 48.7 ± 3.3 years and 57.5 ± 5.7 years old., respectively. At baseline all outcomes were significantly worse (p<0.002) in postmenopausal group, except the VHI (p < 0.056). After 30 days VHI increased (p < 0.001) of 4.1 ± 0.5 (mean ± SE), and 5.1 ± 0.4 in peri- and post-menopausal women respectively. VAS of vaginal dryness decreased (p < 0.001) of -24.4 ± 3.6, and -52.7 ± 2.6 (p < 0.001), VAS of irritation decreased (p<0.001) of -18.6 ± 4.4 and -47.8 ± 3.2, VAS of pain decreased (p < 0.001) of -26.2 ± 4.3 and -55.6 ± 3.1 and the GSS decreased (p < 0.001) of -3.9 ± 0.3, and -4.9 ± 0.2, in peri and post-menopausal women, respectively. All the modifications were significantly greater (p < 0.001)(p < 0.032 for GSS) in postmenopausal women, and after 30 days all outcomes were similar in the two groups of women. In comparison to baseline, after 210 days of treatment VHI increased of 7.7 ± 0.3 (p < 0.001), VAS of vaginal dryness decreased of -53.6 ± 1.9 (p < 0.001) VAS of irritation of -42.6 ± 1.4 (p < 0.001) VAS of pain of -46.7 ± 2.3 (p < 0.001) and the GSS of -6.5 ± 0.2 ± 0.2 (p < 0.001). All outcomes improved (p < 0.001) over the values observed after 30 days of treatment (p < 0.001). No side effect was reported. CONCLUSIONS: In peri- and post-menopausal women PCV administration rapidly improves VA symptoms, and its prolongation up to 6 months further increases its efficacy.

ABSTRACT

Pyocolpos refers to the buildup of pus within the vaginal cavity. Pyocolpos in the background of lichen sclerosis and postmenopausal bleeding (PMB) has not been previously described. A 69-year-old para 3 patient presented with a history of PMB with a long-standing history of lichen sclerosis. The vaginal examination was impossible due to vaginal adhesions. Vulval appearances revealed the loss of the clitoral architecture. Further imaging revealed an endometrial thickness of 4-5 mm, a focal abnormality within the posterior ectocervix compatible with a hemorrhagic cystic lesion distending the posterior fornix, and some free fluid within the pelvis. A hysteroscopy was abandoned as the vagina was completely obliterated. After a multidisciplinary assessment, the patient had a total abdominal hysterectomy, and the presence of a pyocolpos was noticed at the opening into the vault. We could not find any previous case reports of pyocolpos that are associated with lichen sclerosus. The long-standing history of lichen sclerosus may have caused an obstruction of the outflow tract, which was secondarily infected and slowly progressed into the formation of pyocolpos. Other management options could have been explored if the diagnosis of pyocolpos had been made preoperatively. Pyocolpos should be considered in patients with a history of a long-standing lichen sclerosus who present with abdominal pain and a pelvic mass on imaging.

ABSTRACT

The climacteric heralds a transition from reproductive to non-reproductive life in women, often accompanied by various clinical manifestations such as dry eye, impacting their quality of life. This study focuses on systematically developing and suitability an educational digital booklet to promote eye health practices and prevent problems among postmenopausal women. The methodological approach encompassed semi-structured interviews with women diagnosed with Dry Eye Syndrome (DES), then constructing the material integrating content, script, illustrations, and layout informed by the interview findings. Subsequent validation involved assessment by 24 health experts for content, appearance, and evaluation by a target audience of 22 women. The booklet attained high suitability scores, with a Global Content Validity Index (CVI) of 0.96, indicating superior suitability as judged by experts. Additionally, it achieved a Global CVI of 0.98 for validation by the target audience. In conclusion, the educational booklet emerges as a suitable and reliable resource for promoting eye heath among DES and non-syndrome women, offering significant potential for broader application in relevant populations.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: To identify peri- and post-menopausal women at risk of non-communicable diseases in rural India and to assess their prevalence amongst these groups via the use of artificial intelligence. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: An observational study conducted by the Indian Menopause Society in collaboration with the Government of Maharashtra. The study included rural women residents of three villages in the Latur district of Maharashtra, India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Accredited social health activist workers identified 400 peri- and post-menopausal women aged 45-60 years. Specific symptoms able to predict the presence of a non-communicable disease were identified through the use of artificial intelligence. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: Descriptive statistics and predictive network charts analysis. RESULTS: The mean age of 316 women included in the analysis was 50.4 years and the majority of them were illiterate (68 %). The prevalence of dyslipidaemia, osteopenia, diabetes mellitus, obesity and hypertension were 58 %, 50 %, 25 %, 25 %, and 20 % respectively. None of their symptoms or laboratory reports could be significantly correlated directly with any of these non-communicable diseases. Hence, we used a cluster of symptoms to suggest the presence of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis and hypothyroidism via predictive network analysis charts. CONCLUSIONS: Screening of at-risk women can be done using an artificial intelligence-based screening tool for early diagnosis, timely referral and treatment of non-communicable diseases with the support of community health workers.

ABSTRACT

Background and objective Prolactin (PRL) has a high specificity toward breast cancer (BC), making it a valuable marker in both diagnosis and prognosis. In this study, we aimed to compare serum PRL levels between pre- and post-menopausal women with BC, as well as normal reference values. We also investigated the association of various risk factors with PRL levels in women with BC. Methods The study involved adult women diagnosed with BC based on clinical features and tissue histopathology receiving treatment at a tertiary care center in Pune, India. General and demographic information, anthropometric measurements (height, weight, and BMI), menstrual status (age at menarche and menopausal state), clinical presentation (signs and symptoms), duration of symptoms, and parity were recorded by using a pre-tested proforma based on hospital records or in-person interviews. Serum PRL was measured by the RIA method (sandwich assay). Results A total of 67 women (average age: 47.5 ± 11.8 years; 33 of them post-menopausal) with BC were included in the study. The participants had an average BMI of 24.9 ± 3.5 kg/m2, and 26 (39%) of them were overweight. The majority of women had BC stage IIA disease, involvement of the right side or upper outer quadrant, and had attained menarche after 14 years of age; 47 women had a BC duration of >3 months. Seven women were nulliparous, and the remaining had given birth to their first child before the age of 26 years. The average serum PRL level among the participants was 9.27 ± 7.62 ng/mL, with higher levels found in post-menopausal women compared to pre-menopausal women (11.08 vs. 7.51 ng/mL, respectively; p=0.08). Women with a higher stage and greater duration of disease had significantly higher serum PRL levels (p<0.001 for both). When compared with reference values, pre-menopausal women showed significantly lower (6.25 vs. 10.9, respectively; p=0.001) and post-menopausal women showed significantly higher (8.55 vs. 5.95; p=0.004) serum PRL levels. A positive correlation was found between serum PRL and age at the time of birth of the first child (p=0.068). Conclusions Based on our findings, PRL is an important hormone in the development of BC in women. Therapeutic modulation of PRL may be a realistic and novel approach to curing human BC, either administered alone or in combination with conventional treatments.

Female-specific reproductive factors might contribute to increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and the American Heart Association (AHA) recently proposed Life's Essential 8 (LE8) score to quantify cardiovascular health (CVH). The study aimed to examine the relationships between reproductive factors and the LE8 score among post-menopause women in the United States. We enrolled 3223 post-menopause women from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). CVH groups based on LE8 score were low (0-49), moderate (50-79), and high good CVH levels (80-100). Multivariate ordinal logistic regressions were applied to estimate the associations between reproductive factors and the LE8 score. In multivariate model, early menarche (OR: 0.69, 95 percent CI: 0.51-0.93) and early menopause (OR: 0.57, 95 percent CI: 0.43-0.77) were associated with LE8 score compared with normal menarche and menopause; Meanwhile, ages at menarche and menopause were positively correlated with LE8 score. The number of pregnancies and full-term pregnancies were negatively associated with LE8 (OR for per pregnancy increase and 95 percent CI, 0.93 (0.88, 0.98), 0.93 (0.87, 0.99), separately). Overall, natural menopausal women with early age at menarche and menopause, and a higher number of pregnancies may have a high risk of lower CVH, and need to focus on their CVH.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To explore the imaging features and the molecular characterization of adenomyosis after menopause. STUDY DESIGN: An observational cross-sectional study was performed in a group of postmenopausal patients undergoing a transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) (n = 468). Among those presenting the US criteria for adenomyosis, also confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), previous menstrual symptoms, gynecological and obstetric history were reviewed. In a subgroup undergoing hysterectomy, uterine specimens were analyzed by histology and expression of genes implicated in the epithelial-mesenchymal transition, inflammation and fibrosis, including the sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) pathway, was evaluated and compared to matched non-menopausal adenomyosis specimens. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Direct and indirect US features of adenomyosis according to Morphological Uterus Sonographic Assessment at TVUS. Molecular characterization of postmenopausal versus pre-menopausal adenomyosis samples. RESULTS: According to TVUS and MRI, adenomyosis was identified in 49 patients (10.4 %). On US, diffuse adenomyosis was the most common phenotype, whereas internal adenomyosis with diffuse pattern and asymmetric type was the most prevalent on MRI. Molecular analysis showed that adenomyosis lesions express markers of epithelial-mesenchymal transition, inflammation and fibrosis also in postmenopausal women. By comparing the results with those from pre-menopausal samples, the expression of α smooth muscle actin (αSMA), a marker of fibrosis, was significantly greater after menopause, and altered S1P catabolism and signaling were observed. CONCLUSIONS: Adenomyosis may be identified in postmenopausal women by imaging, either TVUS or MRI, and fibrosis is one of the key features on molecular analysis.

Introduction Globally, the health of women has been of great concern for healthcare providers for the past many years. However, the concern is limited to maternal and adolescent health and the life course approach is lagging. Thus, a need was felt to study the changes after menopause and its influential factors by determining the prevalence of menopausal symptoms and medico-socio-cultural dimensions of menopause among perimenopausal and early postmenopausal women. Methodology A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted from February 2014 to April 2015 in a rural area of Puducherry among 148 women in perimenopausal and early postmenopausal stages by complete enumeration using a pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire. Prevalence was expressed as frequency with percentage and the chi-square test was used to find the association among the study variables. Results The prevalence of menopausal symptoms was in 143 (96.6%) women. Backache (62.3%) was found to have a higher prevalence. Physical symptoms (93.2%) were most prevalent. Of the women, 95% were affected by mild symptoms. Regarding medical and social dimensions of menopausal symptoms, socioeconomic status to vasomotor, age of menarche to physical, marital status, and abortion status to sexual symptoms were significant. A positive correlation was seen among the four menopausal symptom domains, except for vasomotor to sexual symptoms. Conclusion Increased prevalence of menopausal symptoms is seen among menopausal women who are unaware of seeking medical advice. Additional emphasis should be placed on implementing programmes that will critically help to sensitize and intensify the awareness of menopause among women in India.

ABSTRACT

The use of herbal supplements has become increasingly prevalent, with black cohosh (BC) gaining popularity for managing menopausal symptoms. However, reports of adverse effects associated with BC are limited. We present a case of bradycardia linked to prolonged BC ingestion. A 76-year-old postmenopausal woman who has been taking BC for years has had syncopal attacks multiple times during the past years associated with bradycardia with the heart rate dropping to 30 beats/minute with no identifiable cause. Discontinuation of BC resulted in a gradual resolution of bradycardia, highlighting a plausible association. There were no additional pharmacological or invasive interventions required.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The efficacy and tolerability of a non-hormonal pessary (that forms an oil-in-water emollient with the vaginal fluid) were assessed for the treatment of symptoms of vaginal dryness associated with menopause. STUDY DESIGN: Seventy-nine postmenopausal women (mean age 60.8 ± 6.5 years) with mild to moderate symptoms of vaginal dryness (including dyspareunia) were enrolled in this open-label, prospective, post-market clinical follow-up trial, conducted in 2022 by one research center in Germany. The investigational pessary was applied for the first 7 days once daily and the subsequent 31 days twice a week, at bedtime. A treatment-free period of 6 days completed the trial. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: During the trial, participants filled out questionnaires that enabled the calculation of a total severity score for subjective symptoms of atrophy-related vaginal dryness and impairment of daily as well as sexual life. Furthermore, vaginal health index and safety were studied. RESULTS: A rapid and significant reduction in the severity scores for symptoms was observed over the 38-day course of treatment and beyond. Quality of life assessed by DIVA (day-to-day impact of vaginal aging) questionnaire, dyspareunia and vaginal health index also clearly improved. The tolerability was mainly rated as "good to very good" by the investigator and 94.9 % of participants. The vast majority were very satisfied with the simple and pleasant handling. No serious adverse events occurred. CONCLUSION: Overall, the presented data suggest that the investigated non-hormonal pessary is an effective and well tolerated treatment option for vaginal symptoms associated with dryness, thus improving quality of life for women, even those who are sexually active. ABSTRACT

Menopause marks the end of female reproductive capacity. It is defined as the point after cessation of the menstrual cycle for 12 months (Nursat et al., 2008). Awareness about menopause has increased over the last decade, yet studies have shown that women still lack knowledge regarding the subject. Likewise, awareness of women between the age of 40-65 on the potential role of physical activity prior to and during menopause in women is unclear. Women (n = 162) aged 40-65 years completed a survey rating their knowledge, answered fact-based questions and reported their experiences of menopause. Their levels of, and beliefs on, the role physical activity on symptoms and menopause associated disease risk were also collected. Women reported their confidence in their current knowledge level at 67% reflecting 37% higher rating than an estimate of their knowledge 10 years ago. Their factual knowledge score was 56%. Knowledge was primarily gained through friends and family and almost half (46%) had not spoken to a healthcare professional. Frustration was expressed with lack of knowledge and support of healthcare and others. Women using HRT (44%) had mixed attitudes towards its role. A high proportion were active and felt that physical activity can help manage symptoms and impact long-term health consequences of menopause. Menopause education strategies for women, healthcare professionals and others need to be improved. Lack of education may be causing women to struggle and feel negatively towards this life stage. Physical activity was viewed positively for the symptoms and a treatment during menopause and long-term health.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Rectovaginal fistula (RVF) is an abnormal channel formed by epithelial tissue between the anterior wall of the rectum and the posterior wall of the vagina, which manifests as vaginal gassing and defecation. It is one of the common complications of female pelvic surgeries. With the increased number of proctectomies for rectal cancer, the number of postoperative rectovaginal fistulas also increases. Once RVF occurs, the failure rate is still high with various treatments available. RVF causes great suffering to women and is still a major problem in treatment. Therefore, it is significant for female rectal cancer patients to prevent RVF after rectal cancer surgery. In this study, we introduce a new method to prevent RVF during rectal cancer radical operation. METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial (RCT), all operations are performed according to the principle of total mesorectal excision (TME) radical resection in rectal cancer surgery. All eligible participants will be divided into two groups: the experimental group and the control group. Experimental group: the anterior rectal wall of about 1 cm distal to the anastomosis was dislocated. Before the anastomosis of the rectal end, a fat flap (usually left side) containing the ovarian vascular pedicle was dislocated, measured by 10-15 cm in length and 2 cm in width. The fat flap containing the ovarian vascular pedicle was packed and fixed anterior to the anastomotic stoma with fibrin glue. CONTROL GROUP: surgery will be carried out in accordance with the TME principle. Participants will be compared on several variables, including the incidence of RVF after operation (primary outcomes), the occurrence time of postoperative RVF, the occurrence time of RVF after stoma closure, and other postoperative complications, such as anastomotic leakage, chylous leakage, and intestinal obstruction (secondary outcomes). The follow-up data collection will be conducted according to the follow-up time point, and the baseline data will also be collected for follow-up analysis. By comparing the incidence of rectovaginal leakage between the experimental group and the control group, we aim to explore the feasibility of this method for the prevention of postoperative RVF. DISCUSSION: This RCT will explore the feasibility of packing with a laparoscopic dislocated fat flap containing an ovarian vascular pedicle anterior to the anastomotic stoma after rectal cancer surgery to prevent RVF. INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: This study is aimed at comparing the effectiveness of pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) and Pilates on the improvement of urinary incontinence (UI), strength, and endurance of the pelvic floor muscles (PFMs), and the impact of UI on the quality of life in postmenopausal women. METHODS: Forty postmenopausal women were randomly divided in to two groups: PFMT (n = 20) and Pilates (n = 20). The participants were followed for 12 weeks, three times a week on nonconsecutive days. UI was assessed using the pad test and the voiding diary, PFM strength and resistance using bidigital assessment and manometry, and the impact of UI on quality of life using the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form (ICIQ-SF), before and after the 3-month treatment. RESULTS: There was a significant intra-group improvement in both groups for the pad test, mean daily urinary loss, and ICIQ-SF. The strength was significantly improved only in the PFMT group, and the endurance in both groups. Peak strength manometry was significantly improved only in the Pilates group, and the mean strength manometry in both groups. There was also an improvement in both groups for peak endurance manometry and mean endurance manometry. In the inter-group comparison, there was a significant improvement only in muscle strength, which was positive for group. CONCLUSIONS: There was no difference between Pilates and PFMT for the management of women in post-menopause with stress urinary incontinence, provided that voluntary contraction of the PFMs is performed. However, further randomized clinical trials need to be carried out.

INTRODUCTION: This is a presentation of a study protocol in order to evaluate whether the application of CO2 laser can additionally benefit the improvement of the symptoms of overactive bladder in postmenopausal women who have just started mirabegron as a treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a study protocol of a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial. A total of 50 menopausal women will participate in the study. All patients will start treatment with mirabegron 50 mg and will be randomized into two groups. Women in group A (control) will undergo CO2 laser treatments while those in group B (placebo group) will receive placebo CO2 laser treatments. In total, three monthly sessions will be held in both groups. The monitoring and evaluation of the results will be carried out by completing a three-day urination diary, as well as by completing the Female Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms, Overactive Bladder Questionnaire, King's Health Questionnaire, Urinary Distress Inventory, Pelvic Floor Impact Questionnaire, Patient Global Impression of Improvement, before each session and a month after the last one. Differences between groups will be assessed at baseline and every month following the three laser therapies. RESULTS: This is an ongoing study protocol, and we are expecting the analysis of the results in 2024. CONCLUSIONS: The use of laser CO2 in postmenopausal women with overactive bladder syndrome may be a well-tolerated alternative treatment. The goal of our study is to evaluate the efficacy of laser treatment in combination with b3-adrenoreceptor agonist therapy.

Background: Diminishing hormonal levels after menopause evoke physiological changes in a woman's body. Their effects on the oral cavity are noteworthy, considering symptoms of dry mouth, altered taste perceptions, and tooth loss that may be attributed to reduced salivary flow and alveolar density changes. Aim: The purpose of this study was to assess changes in salivary flow rate, tooth loss, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) as menopausal duration increased. Materials and Methods: A total of 327 women fulfilling the eligibility criteria were chosen from two villages in the Mysuru district, Karnataka. They were categorized into three groups based on menopausal durations. Salivary flow rates, number of teeth lost, and OHRQoL after menopause were assessed and compared at different menopausal durations. Sociodemographic characteristics and oral hygiene practices were recorded to identify potential confounders. Results: Multivariate analysis demonstrated a significant association between menopausal duration and salivary flow rates (adjusted odds ratio = 2.269). However, no such associations were observed with tooth loss and OHRQoL. Conclusion: Menopausal duration significantly affects salivary flow rate. Its influence on tooth loss and OHRQoL is, however, less evident. Although strong associations cannot be established, the inevitability of the menopausal state advocates consideration of other major yet modifiable factors to improve oral health.

BACKGROUND: The Healthy Eating Index 2015 (HEI-2015) is a tool for checking the quality of diet. This index is used to examine how well people's dietary behavior fits certain criteria for achieving a healthy diet in Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2015-2020. We look at the possible association between the HEI-2015 and bone mineral density (BMD) and muscle strength in postmenopausal women. METHODS: This research included 1012 postmenopausal women from the recruitment phase of the Ravansar Noncommunicable Diseases (RaNCD) cohort study in Kermanshah-Iran. A standardized and repeatable food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) that contains 118 items was used to quantify dietary consumption. Anthropometric indices measured via Bio-Impedance Analyzer BIA (Inbody 770, Inbody Co, Seoul, Korea). RESULT: The mean age of postmenopausal women was (56.41 ± 5.31) years. Participants in the highest quartile had a more daily energy intake compared to the lowest quartile (2329.89 ± 837.59), (P < 0.001). Women in the upper quartiles had greater Skeletal Muscle Mass (SMM) than those in the lower quartiles (21.61 ± 2.80 vs 20.52 ± 3.13; p = 0.0002). The linear model didn't show a significant relationship between HEI score and greater BMD (ß = 0.0014, P = 0.169). CONCLUSION: A diet of high quality followed by a high HEL-2015 score was shown to be strongly connected to increased BMD and muscle mass in Kurdish postmenopausal women.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the proposed scoping review is to describe and summarize studies assessing the associations between diet-related variables and depression in peri- and post-menopausal women. Studies examining the associations between diet-related variables and mental health indicators in women undergoing menopausal transition or in the post-menopausal period will be systematically retrieved via Medline, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. All articles identified through the database searches will be imported into Covidence. Following the removal of duplicates, two authors will independently perform title and abstract screening, as well as full-text assessment against eligibility criteria. Data will be extracted using tables developed for observational and experimental studies. The methodological quality of randomized trials, cohort and cross-sectional studies, and case-control studies, will be assessed using the Cochrane risk-of-bias (RoB-2) tool, the NHLBI Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies, and the NHLBI Quality Assessment Tool for Case-Control studies, respectively. Data extraction tables will be used to produce two tables summarizing the main characteristics and findings of the studies included in the review. In the proposed review, we will systematically identify and summarize the currently available evidence on the association between diet-related variables and depression in peri- and post-menopausal women. ABSTRACT

The menopausal transition is often accompanied with distressing manifestations, such as vasomotor symptoms, sleep disruptions, and depressive syndrome. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) have emerged as a potential intervention to alleviate these symptoms. This review aimed to comprehensively assess the impact of n-3 PUFAs supplementation on vasomotor symptoms, sleep quality, and depression among postmenopausal women. We conducted a systematic literature search of randomized controlled trials across the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, and SCOPUS databases from inception to August 2023. Among the initial pool of 163 identified studies, nine studies met the inclusion criteria and were incorporated into this systematic review. Notably, four studies detected potential benefits of n-3 PUFAs in improving hot flashes and night sweats. On the contrary, sleep quality outcomes displayed heterogeneity across the studies. Incorporating diverse scales, such as the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale-21, the Patient Health Questionnaire depression scale, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 for depression outcomes, we found inconclusive evidence of n-3 PUFA's impact on depression. Overall, the combined analysis of these studies did not provide substantial evidence to support the efficacy of n-3 PUFAs in improving vasomotor symptoms, sleep quality, and depression. Further well-designed randomized clinical trials with larger participant groups are crucial to validate and generalize these results. Review Registration: PROSPERO registration no: CRD42023421922.
