ABSTRACT

In Canada, long-term care and retirement home residents have experienced high rates of COVID-19 infection and death. Early efforts to protect residents included restricting all visitors as well as movement inside homes. These restrictions, however, had significant implications for residents' health and well-being. Engaging with those most affected by such restrictions can help us to better understand their experiences and address their needs. In this qualitative study, 43 residents of long-term care or retirement homes, family members and staff were interviewed and offered recommendations related to infection control, communication, social contact and connection, care needs, and policy and planning. The recommendations were examined using an ethical framework, providing potential relevance in policy development for public health crises. Our results highlight the harms of movement and visiting restrictions and call for effective, equitable, and transparent measures. The design of long-term care and retirement policies requires ongoing, meaningful engagement with those most affected.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the preoperative and intraoperative features, intraoperative and postoperative complications and postoperative satisfaction of patients who underwent immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery (ISBCS) during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: The study included ISBCS patients from September 2021 through January 2022. Demographics, comorbidities, type of anesthesia (topical/general), intraoperative complications, postoperative refractive errors, and complications were examined. The one-month postoperative appointment included a patient satisfaction questionnaire. RESULTS: ISBCS was performed in 206 eyes of 103 patients. Intraoperative complications did not occur in 99 (96.1%) of ISBCS patients. No patients had visually significant corneal edema, wound leakage, endophthalmitis, or toxic anterior segment syndrome during postoperative follow-up. Final manifest spherical equivalent refraction was less than 1.00 D in all patients and less than 0.50 D in 70.7% of patients. In the questionnaire given to the patients at the one-month follow-up, 96.1% of patients did not change their preference for surgery on the same day. CONCLUSION: ISBCS provides an advantage during the pandemic period by reducing hospital visits, especially for the elderly population and patients with comorbidities. ISBCS is a safe and reasonable method that can be used during a pandemic due to the low rates of complications, the success of the refractive results, and the high patient satisfaction rates.

ABSTRACT

The human experience of survival from a plague is about distinguishing the sick from the healthy as quickly as possible, establishing a barrier to stop the infection, and protecting healthy people. Nevertheless, the various quarantine rules and the acceptance and compliance of the population are a kind of battle between policy implementers and the public. This paper tries to understand how Chinese cultural attitudes (Henderson, 1984) unconsciously influence the Chinese people to be most cooperative with the strict containment and quarantine measures to confront the COVID-19 pandemic. This article begins with the Chinese characters, exemplified by the four characters of disease and plague, to discuss how the pictograph nature and spatial structural way profoundly shaped the cultural mind. Then, through plague-related Chinese legends, stories and folklore, the paper sets out the Chinese cultural attitudes which are also manifested in the analogical associations between disease, plague and seasons, the balance of the five elements of the universe and ghosts, gods and the government bureaucrats in the Kingdom of the Heaven. All of these approaches are well in line with Jung's method of associative amplification as a way to locate the archetypal wisdom that assures survival.

ABSTRACT

Multiple psychological health problems related to the COVID-19 pandemic among both the general public and health-care workers have been identified in the scientific literature. However, most studies used quantitative methods with scales selected on the basis of the researchers' pre-established knowledge derived from the experience of other situations and which can therefore induce biases. The dual aim of the present study was to explore qualitatively the perceived psychological consequences of lockdown on members of the general public and the perceived psychological consequences of COVID-19 on health-care workers. We recruited 241 participants from the general public and 120 health-care workers. They consented online to participate and completed open-ended questions evaluating the consequence of the health crisis on their life as a couple, on their friendships, family life, work, studies, psychological health, stress, and vision of the future. Finally, participants were asked to add any further consequences that had not been mentioned. We used double coding to process the data. We identified five main themes among the participants from the general public: improved and maintained social relationships, deterioration of health, improved health, personal growth, and lack of direct social contact. We also identified five main issues among the health-care workers: psychological and emotional impact, adjusting, negative impact on work, worries, and uncertainty about the future. The results confirmed the existence of psychological health problems related to the COVID-19 pandemic. They also highlighted positive consequences. Health-care workers tended to perceive more negative consequences than the participants from the general public.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: This investigation evaluated food values, food purchasing, and other food and eating-related outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic in Quebec, Canada. The role of stress in eating outcomes was also examined. Methods: An online household survey was conducted among Quebec adults aged ≥18 years (n = 658). Changes in outcomes during, as compared to before, the pandemic were evaluated using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis of free text responses. Eating outcomes by daily stress level (low, some, high) were assessed using Cochran-Armitage test for trend. Results: Most respondents reported increased importance and purchasing of local food products (77% and 68%, respectively) and 60% reported increased grocery spending (mean ± standard deviation: 28% ± 23%). Respondents with a higher daily stress level had a higher frequency of reporting eating more than usual compared to before the pandemic (low stress 21%, some stress 34%, high stress 39%, p-trend <0.0001). Free text responses described more time spent at home as a reason for eating more than usual. Conclusions: To support healthy eating during and post-pandemic, dietitians should consider patients' mental/emotional well-being and time spent at home. Moreover, support of local food products may provide opportunities to promote healthy eating, sustainability, and post-pandemic resiliency of food systems.

ABSTRACT

This paper seeks to integrate the perspectives of analytical psychology and neurobiology in order to understand the phenomenon of addiction in contemporary society, taking into account the COVID-19 pandemic. Jung emphasizes the role of the psyche's self-regulation and the development of consciousness in the individuation process. The search for experiences of transcendence is archetypal and can be achieved by the use of some substances or behaviours and can contribute to individuation. However, in contemporary society, many individuals seek to restore internal balance through behaviours that merely soothe discomfort. The difficulty in discerning use, abuse, and dependence, particularly in the case of behavioural addictions, is discussed and neurobiological factors are presented. Empathic relationships play a key role in this process as they can promote the integration of the right and left hemispheres, integrating non-verbal experiences and language, contributing to self-regulation. Jung emphasizes the importance of real encounters in the transformation process. Currently, meetings have become a source of anguish. The author concludes that more than ever it is necessary to invest in the quality of the interactions to prevent and treat addictions.

ABSTRACT

The following paper presents reflections on certain consequences on the clinic with children and teenagers due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. The action of uncertainty and the unpredictable on the subjectivity of the population is pointedout and it is proposed to recall the events linked to protection measures (Mandatory Preventive Isolation, lasting two years) and resignify them to venture an incipient historicization about some of the effects that the pandemic produced on clinical work with children and adolescents. For this purpose, the Freudian development on libidinal withdrawal and its consequences for the Self, and the changes in the technical resources that had to be implemented when online sessions were installed, are taken as theguiding conceptual axis. The disturbing consequences of the pandemic are pointed out regarding young children, those with serious pathologies and in adolescents, taking into account the specificity of their subjective characteristics AU

ABSTRACT

Most of the clinical experiences discussed in this article arose from monthly Zoom meetings at Rome's Italian Centre of Analytical Psychology (CIPA). We set up a discussion group in April 2020, one month after lockdown began in Italy, and these monthly online meetings continue to this day. All senior analysts and analysts-in-training at Rome's CIPA, whose backgrounds range from child and adolescent psychotherapy to adult psychotherapy and analysis, to sandplay therapy and medicine and psychiatry, have been participating in these meetings. The group discussions focus on the present time and its impact on us, as well as on our relationships with patients. By further developing these reflections during the lockdown in Italy (9 March - 3 May 2020), it is fair to ask whether a sense of unreality, depersonalization, or derealization has occurred, either in the therapist or patient, and if so, whether it is possible that therapists miss the human contact more than clients. We will mainly refer to clinical and personal experiences as our most precious guidelines.

ABSTRACT

This article was based on the experience assisting employees of a hospital through applied psychoanalysis, developed during the construction of a research project coordinated by ProfessorTania Coelho dos Santos and financed by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development. It consists of an approach to the psychic impasses of employees and the consequent clinical-institutional phenomena encountered. Psychological attention to the employees gained greater prominence during the Covid-19 pandemic. In response to the fear of helplessness and the threat of death, we observed intense emotional reactions and disruptive behaviors in the workplace. As a consequence, the psychology service was organized to deal with the subjective emergencies triggered inside the institution

ABSTRACT

This article reports the case study of the extreme efficiency in the procedures enforced to avert the Covid-19 pandemic, from an analysis of the interviews carried out with the health professionals who commanded the front line of a private hospital in Rio de Janeiro since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted these interviews with the purpose of understanding how these professionals faced the threat and responded to the demands that emerged during the pandemic. The hospital's psychology team was able to witness the transformations from the hospital's structure to the definition of treatment protocols for a disease unknown at the time. We were forced to rethink our clinical procedure based on applied psychoanalysis and to implement new interventions in response to the crisis
