ABSTRACT

In Burkina Faso, several investigations have raised suspicions that hospital liquid effluents are the source of contaminants in porbeagle-culture products and surface water in urban and peri-urban areas. This study aimed to evaluate the hygienic quality of hospital liquid effluents discharged into nature by the UHC Bogodogo (UHC-BOG), Yalgado Ouédraogo (UHC-YO), and the WWTS of Kossodo (WWTS-KOS). Thus, 15 samples of liquid effluents (five per site) discharged into nature were collected. Within the physicochemical parameters, the pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), suspended solids (TSS), conductivity, copper, iron, hafnium, silver, mercury, lead, and cadmium of these samples were determined using standard methods. The mean values of pH were 8.84 ± 0.42,8.06 ± 0.54, and 8.55 ± 0.53 for WWTS-KOS, UHC-BOG, and UHC-YO, respectively. Conductivity values were 1956.80 ± 81.30, 812.80 ± 45.22, and 956.00 ± 39.96 µS/cm, respectively. TSS were 338.20 ± 38.80, 45.00 ± 5.79, and 187.80 ± 27.58 mg/L, respectively. COD were 274.80 ± 20.46, 35.00 ± 5.52, and 139.80 ± 25.53 mg/L, respectively. BOD5 were 186.40 ± 68.68, 26.20 ± 4.82, and 81.80 ± 15.63 mg/L, respectively. Mercury values were 1.93 ± 0.38, 4.04 ± 0.38, and 14.37 ± 1.65 µg/L, respectively. Lead values were 434.70 ± 202.42, 310.50 ± 4.09, and 367.43 ± 94.01 µg/L, respectively. Cadmium values were 79.59 ± 19.48, 109.94 ± 8.43, and 80.26 ± 7.85 µg/L, respectively. Copper values were 27.66 ± 3.33, 30.84 ± 1.65, and 28.32 ± 2.36 mg/L, respectively. Iron was detected only on the STEP-KOS with an average of 71.01 ± 37.83 mg/L. Hafnium values were 50.27 ± 4.49 and 51.58 ± 4.61 mg/L for WWTS-KOS and UHC-BOG, respectively. Silver values were 34.26 ± 3.06 for WWTS-KOS. On the three sites, the differences found were significant (p < 0.05). Liquid hospital effluents from Ouagadougou discharged into nature on the whole do not compile with the Burkinabè normative values for the discharge of wastewater into the environment.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To develop and validate a dual-energy CT (DECT)-based model for noninvasively differentiating between benign and malignant breast lesions detected on DECT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study prospectively enrolled patients with suspected breast cancer who underwent dual-phase contrast-enhanced DECT from July 2022 to July 2023. Breast lesions were randomly divided into the training and test cohorts at a ratio of 7:3. Clinical characteristics, DECT-based morphological features, and DECT quantitative parameters were collected. Univariate analyses and multivariate logistic regression were performed to determine independent predictors of benign and malignant breast lesions. An individualized model was constructed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to evaluate the diagnostic ability of the model, whose calibration and clinical usefulness were assessed by calibration curve and decision curve analysis. RESULTS: This study included 200 patients (mean age, 49.9 ± 11.9 years; age range, 22-83 years) with 222 breast lesions. Age, lesion shape, and the effective atomic number (Zeff) in the venous phase were significant independent predictors of breast lesions (all p < 0.05). The discriminative power of the model incorporating these three factors was high, with AUCs of 0.844 (95%CI 0.764-0.925) and 0.791 (95% CI 0.647-0.935) in the training and test cohorts, respectively. The constructed model showed a preferable fitting (all p > 0.05 by the Hosmer-Lemeshow test) and provided enhanced net benefits than simple default strategies within a wide range of threshold probabilities in both cohorts. CONCLUSION: The DECT-based model showed a favorable diagnostic performance for noninvasive differentiation between benign and malignant breast lesions detected on DECT. CRITICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: The combination of clinical and morphological characteristics and DECT-derived parameter have the potential to identify benign and malignant breast lesions and it may be useful for incidental breast lesions on DECT to decide if further work-up is needed. KEY POINTS: It is important to characterize incidental breast lesions on DECT for patient management. DECT-based model can differentiate benign and malignant breast lesions with good performance. DECT-based model is a potential tool for distinguishing breast lesions detected on DECT.

ABSTRACT

Cryoconites are the deposits on the surface of glaciers that create specific ecological niches for the development of microorganism communities. The sediment material can vary in origin, structure, and nutrient content, creating local variations in the growth conditions. An additional factor of variability is the location of the glaciers, as they are found in different climatic zones in the high mountain regions and closer to the poles. Here, using the analysis of amplicon sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene, we studied the taxonomic composition of the prokaryotic communities from glaciers from remote regions, including the Arctic (Mushketova on the Severnaya Zemlya, IGAN in Polar Ural), Antarctic (Pimpirev on the Livingstone Island) and Central Caucasus (Skhelda and Garabashi) and connected it with the variation of the physicochemical characteristics of the substrate: pH, carbon, nitrogen, macro- and microelements. The cryoconite microbiomes were comprised of specific for this environment phyla (mostly Pseudomonadota, Cyanobacteria, Bacteroidota, Acidobacteriota, and Actinobacteriota), but each glacier had a unique taxonomic imprint. The core microbiome between regions was composed of only a few ASVs, among which the most likely globally distributed ones attributed to Polaromonas sp., Rhodoferax sp., Cryobacterium sp., and Hymenobacter frigidus. The WGSNA defined clusters of co-occurring ASVs between microbiomes, that significantly change their abundance corresponding with the variation of chemical parameters of cryoconites, but do not fully coincide with their regional separation. Thus, our work demonstrates that the chemical characteristics of the sediment material can explain the variation in the cryoconite prokaryotic community which is not always linked to geographic isolation.

ABSTRACT

Cerebral aneurysms are a silent yet prevalent condition that affects a significant global population. Their development can be attributed to various factors, presentations, and treatment approaches. The importance of selecting the appropriate treatment becomes evident upon diagnosis, as the severity of the disease guides the course of action. Cerebral aneurysms are particularly vulnerable in the circle of Willis and pose a significant concern due to the potential for rupture, which can lead to irreversible consequences, including fatality. The primary objective of this study is to predict the rupture status of cerebral aneurysms. To achieve this, we leverage a comprehensive dataset that incorporates clinical and morphological data extracted from 3D real geometries of previous patients. The aim of this research is to provide valuable insights that can help make informed decisions during the treatment process and potentially save the lives of future patients. Diagnosing and predicting aneurysm rupture based solely on brain scans is a significant challenge with limited reliability, even for experienced physicians. However, by employing statistical methods and machine learning techniques, we can assist physicians in making more confident predictions regarding rupture likelihood and selecting appropriate treatment strategies. To achieve this, we used 5 classification machine learning algorithms and trained them on a substantial database comprising 708 cerebral aneurysms. The dataset comprised 3 clinical features and 35 morphological parameters, including 8 novel morphological features introduced for the first time in this study. Our models demonstrated exceptional performance in predicting cerebral aneurysm rupture, with accuracy ranging from 0.76 to 0.82 and precision score from 0.79 to 0.83 for the test dataset. As the data are sensitive and the condition is critical, recall is prioritized as the more crucial parameter over accuracy and precision, and our models achieved outstanding recall score ranging from 0.85 to 0.92. Overall, the best model was Support Vector Machin with an accuracy and precision of 0.82, recall of 0.92 for the testing dataset and the area under curve of 0.84. The ellipticity index, size ratio, and shape irregularity are pivotal features in predicting aneurysm rupture, respectively, contributing significantly to our understanding of this complex condition. Among the multitude of parameters under investigation, these are particularly important. In this study, the ideal roundness parameter was introduced as a novel consideration and ranked fifth among all 38 parameters. Neck circumference and outlet numbers from the new parameters were also deemed significant contributors.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to assess the antioxidant and wound healing properties of Urtica dioica essential oil (UDEO) through a comprehensive evaluation involving in silico, in vitro, and in vivo analyses. The phytochemistry of UDEO was also investigated to identify trace compounds crucial. METHODS: Various injection methods of the multimode inlet (MMI) in chromatography were investigated to attain lower instrumental detection limits. Subsequently, in silico studies were employed to delve deeper into the potential biological activities of the identified compounds. Standard antioxidative tests, encompassing ABTS•+ and TAC, were performed. In vivo tests centered on wound healing were implemented using rat models. The rats were randomly allocated to four groups: saline solution, vaseline vehicle, cytol centella, and 5% UDEO ointment. Wound healing progress was evaluated through a chromatic study. RESULTS: Gas chromatography combined with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) analysis revealed the presence of 97 thermolabile compounds in UDEO. Subsequent in silico studies unveiled the potential of identified compounds to inhibit COX-2, TNF-α, and IL-6, suggesting a possible enhancement of anti-inflammatory responses and healing processes. In vitro tests elucidated the notable antioxidant capacity of UDEO, a finding reinforced by wound healing data, revealing a substantial closure rate of 89% following the topical application of UDEO. Notably, fibrinogen and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were significantly reduced, indicating minimized oxidative stress damage compared to control. Additionally, UDEO exhibited an increase in antioxidant enzyme activities compared to control. CONCLUSION: The study concludes that UDEO possesses significant antioxidant and wound-healing properties, supported by its rich phytochemical composition. The findings suggest its potential application in therapeutic interventions for oxidative stress and inflammatory conditions.

ABSTRACT

Valproic acid is an antiepileptic drug associated with skin-related issues like excessive hair growth, hair loss, and skin rashes. In contrast, Moringa oleifera, rich in nutrients and antioxidants, is gaining popularity worldwide for its medicinal properties. The protective properties of M. oleifera extract against skin-related side effects caused by valproic acid were investigated. Female rats were divided into control groups and experimental groups such as moringa, sodium valproate, and sodium valproate + moringa groups. A 70% ethanolic extract of moringa (0.3 g/kg/day) was given to moringa groups, and a single dose of sodium valproate (0.5 g/kg/day) was given to valproate groups for 15 days. In the skin samples, antioxidant parameters (such as glutathione, glutathione-S-transferase, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and total antioxidant capacity), as well as oxidant parameters representing oxidative stress (i.e. lipid peroxidation, sialic acid, nitric oxide, reactive oxygen species, and total oxidant capacity), were examined. Additionally, boron, hydroxyproline, sodium-potassium ATPase, and tissue factor values were determined. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was also carried out for protein analysis in the skin samples. The results showed that moringa could increase glutathione, total antioxidant capacity, sodium-potassium ATPase, and boron levels, while decreasing lipid peroxidation, sialic acid, nitric oxide, total oxidant capacity, reactive oxygen species, hydroxyproline, and tissue factor levels. These findings imply that moringa possesses the potential to mitigate dermatological side effects.

INTRODUCTION: Hematological parameters are crucial factors in disease severity and chronic condition pathogenesis. We aimed to evaluate the hematological factors in different severity stages of COVID-19 at different time intervals. METHODS: Serum samples were collected from 470 patients (235 men and 235 women) with a confirmed RT-qPCR COVID-19 test exhibiting moderate, severe, and critical symptoms based on WHO criteria. Samples were collected at three-time intervals, including the first: the 1st days of infection, 2nd: the one month after, and 3rd: the three months after disease onset. Total WBC, neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, eosinophil, RBC counting, Hb, HCT, MCV, MCH, MCHC, hsCRP levels, G6PD deficiency, and hemoglobinopathies were determined in all patients. RESULTS: Total WBC, neutrophil, lymphocyte, platelet, RBC counting, Hb, HCT, MCV, MCH, and hsCRP levels were significantly changed with different disease severity (p<0.0001). Also, there were significant differences between different time intervals for WBC and RBC parameters (p<0.0001) except for monocytes and eosinophils. At all time intervals, there are significant changes in levels of hematological and hsCRP based on gender. Moreover, a significant correlation was observed between disease severity, age, and BMI (p<0.0001). CONCLUSION: Significant differences in hematological parameter and inflammatory parameter levels based on disease severity, time intervals, and gender revealed the importance of evaluating these factors in the management of infectious diseases, such as COVID-19, in patients during and post-disease times.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to investigate the epidemiological data about meteorological factors and climate change (CC) impact on asthma. DATA SOURCES: A search was performed using three databases (Web of Science, Science Direct, and MEDLINE) for all relevant studies published from January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2022. STUDY SELECTIONS: This systematic review complied with the PRISMA document's requirements, including studies related to meteorological factors and CC impact on asthma. The search included studies published in English or French language, and was based on title, abstract, and complete text. Documents not meeting inclusion requirements were excluded. RESULTS: We identified 18 studies published in the last five years that were eligible for inclusion in this review. We found that these studies concerned European, Asian, American, and Oceanic cities. Extreme variations in temperature, humidity, wind speed, exceptional incidents like hurricanes, cold and heat waves, and seasonal shifts were strongly correlated with the worsening of asthmatic symptoms, particularly in childhood. In addition, excessive concentrations of air pollutants and aeroallergens were linked to pediatric asthma emergency hospital admissions. CONCLUSIONS: A significant association between the consequences of CC and asthma in adults particularly in children has been demonstrated. Future research should quantify the impact of global change in climate regarding the aeroallergens' distribution in terms of geography and time. It is also necessary to research the impact of air pollution on asthmatic health, like sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and particles having an aerodynamic diameter lower than 2.5 µm (PM2.5).

ABSTRACT

The progression of optical materials and their associated applications necessitates a profound comprehension of their optical characteristics, with the Judd-Ofelt (JO) theory commonly employed for this purpose. However, the computation of JO parameters (Ω2, Ω4, Ω6) entails wide experimental and theoretical endeavors, rendering traditional calculations often impractical. To address these challenges, the correlations between JO parameters and the bulk matrix composition within a series of Rare-Earth ions doped sulfophosphate glass systems were explored in this research. In this regard, a novel soft computing technique named genetic expression programming (GEP) was employed to derive formulations for JO parameters and bulk matrix composition. The predictor variables integrated into the formulations consist of JO parameters. This investigation demonstrates the potential of GEP as a practical tool for defining functions and classifying important factors to predict JO parameters. Thus, precise characterization of such materials becomes crucial with minimal or no reliance on experimental work.

ABSTRACT

Triclosan (TCS), an antibacterial biocide, pervades water and sediment matrices globally, posing a threat to aquatic life. In densely populated cities like Mumbai, rivers and coastal bodies demand baseline TCS data for ecotoxicological assessment due to the excessive use of personal care products comprising TCS. This pioneering study compares spatiotemporal TCS variations and risks in freshwater and marine ecosystems employing multivariate analysis of physicochemical parameters. Over five months (January to May 2022), Mithi River exhibited higher TCS concentrations (water: 1.68 µg/L, sediment: 3.19 µg/kg) than Versova Creek (water: 0.49 µg/L, sediment: 0.69 µg/kg). Principal component analysis revealed positive correlations between TCS and physicochemical parameters. High-risk quotients (>1) underscore TCS threats in both water bodies. This study furnishes crucial baseline data, emphasizing the need for effective treatment plans for TCS in effluent waters released into the adjacent aquatic systems.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of gallic acid (GA) against ovarian damage induced by bisphenol A (BPA) exposure in female rats. We evaluated whether GA can mitigate the adverse effects of BPA on ovarian structure, inflammatory markers, oxidative stress, apoptosis, and reproductive hormone levels. Methods: Thirty-two female rats were categorized into four groups: control, GA, BPA, and GA+BPA. Histopathological evaluations of ovarian tissue were performed using hematoxylin-eosin staining. The immunohistochemical analysis was conducted for inflammatory, oxidative DNA damage, and apoptotic markers (Tumor necrosis factor alpha [TNFα], cyclooxygenase-2 [COX2], interleukin-1 beta [IL-1ß], 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine [8-OHdG], and caspase 3). Oxidative stress was assessed by measuring malondialdehyde and superoxide dismutase levels. Furthermore, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), estrogen, and progesterone levels were quantified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: Histopathological outcomes revealed that BPA significantly induced follicular degeneration, which was effectively mitigated by GA treatment (P < 0.05). Immunohistochemical analysis highlighted the exacerbation of inflammatory responses and oxidative DNA damage and apoptosis (TNFα, COX-2, IL-1ß, 8-OHdG, and caspase 3) in BPA-exposed tissues, which were reduced in the presence of GA (P < 0.05). The assessment of oxidative stress demonstrated that GA could significantly decrease lipid peroxidation and partially restore antioxidant defense mechanisms disrupted by BPA (P < 0.05). Hormonal profiling indicated that BPA exposure altered the levels of FSH, LH, estrogen, and progesterone, with GA treatment showing a capacity to modulate these changes, especially in progesterone levels (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The findings suggest that GA exhibits protective properties against BPA-induced ovarian damage through its antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activities, alongside its ability to modulate hormonal imbalances. This research underscores the therapeutic potential of GA in safeguarding reproductive health against environmental toxicants.

Background: Although pelvic obliquity (PO) is a risk factor for postoperative coronal decompensation in corrective surgery in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), especially Lenke 5C, methods of measuring PO are controversial. This study aimed to establish an appropriate measurement method using multiplanar reconstructed computed tomography (MPR-CT) images instead of standing posteroanterior (PA) whole-spine radiographs to evaluate PO in patients with Lenke 5C AIS. Methods: This study was a retrospective cross-sectional study. Twenty-five patients who underwent corrective surgery for AIS in Osaka University Hospital from August 2014 to February 2023 were included. Cobb angle, L5 tilt, C7 plumb line to center sacral vertebral line (C7PL-CSVL), and leg length discrepancy (LLD) were measured on standing PA whole-spine radiographs preoperatively. Sacral obliquity (SO), the slope of the upper endplate of S1, and iliac obliquity (IO), the tilt of the line connecting the iliac crests, were measured on standing PA whole-spine radiographs and MPR-CT (SO/IO-X-ray, SO/IO-CT, respectively). S1 angle and S2 angle were measured on CT. Results: The mean age of the patients was 18.7±3.9 years and all of them were females. SO-X-ray and SO-CT were larger than IO-X-ray and IO-CT, respectively. SO-X-ray was highly correlated with SO-CT (r=0.838, P<0.001). L5 tilt had higher correlation with SO-CT (r=0.884, P<0.001) than with SO-X-ray (r=0.726, P=0.001) and IO-CT (r=0.550, P=0.22). L5 tilt was correlated poorly with IO-X-ray (r=0.104, P=0.69). The S1 angle was 4.5±3.5° meanwhile the S2 angle was 1.2±2.1°, the sacral deformity was mainly due to the S1 vertebral wedging. Conclusions: Given the asymmetric sacral morphology, SO is more appropriate pelvic parameter than IO to represent the sacral tilt of Lenke 5C AIS, especially when measured using CT images to overcome the poor visibility on PA whole-spine radiographs.

Plant protection unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become popular in mountain orchards, but due to the differences in planting structures, the chances of heavy spraying, missed spraying and pesticide drift are increasing. To mitigate the adverse effects of these phenomena, it is necessary to clarify the effective deposition range of aerial spray droplets. This study proposed an effective spray swath determination method for the effective spraying range of mountainous orchards with UAVs equipped with a mist nozzle (bilateral 1% coverage). This approach focused on exploring the effects of flight height (unidirectional flight modes of 2, 3 and 4 m), spray nozzle atomization performance (reciprocating flight modes of 20, 30 and 40 µm) and flight route (treetop flying and inter-row flying) on the spraying range in a mountain setting. In addition, the study analysed the relationship between the droplet-size spectrum and the effective swath position. The results showed that it is feasible to use the bilateral 1% coverage evaluation method to determine the effective spray swath of a UAV adapted with a mist nozzle for aerial operation in a mountainous Nangguo Pear orchard. With the increase in UAV flight height (2-4 m), the effective unidirectional spray swath also increased, and with the increase in atomization level (20-40 µm), the effective reciprocating spray swath showed a decreasing trend. Moreover, the average effective swath width measured by the UAV for treetop flight was greater than that measured for inter-row flight. The study also found that the proportion of small droplets (droplet size less than 100 µm) below the UAV route was lower (approximately 50%) than along the sides of the route (approximately 80%), and the spray swath was not symmetrically distributed along the flight route but shifted laterally by approximately 3 to 4 m in the downhill direction.

ABSTRACT

The study aimed to assess the digestibility, growth performance, and selected biochemical and hematological parameters of Bandjock Local pigs (BLP) and Duroc X Large White pigs (DLW). We hypothesize that the use of local ingredients in diet formulation associated to improved rearing conditions, enhance the growth performance, digestibility, biochemical and hematological parameters of BLP. The trial involved dividing twenty-four eight-week-old weaner pigs into two groups. Each group was randomly assigned to separate pig units. Animal management and feeding were consistent between both groups. The trial lasted for 120 days during which the growth performance, the digestibility of ingested nutrients, and biochemical and hematological parameters were evaluated. The results indicate that DLW pigs registered a weight gain (46.56±5.19 kg) significantly higher than BLP pigs (34.02), with a statistically similar feed conversion ratio. Except for albumin which was significantly higher in DLW and urea in BLP, there were no significant differences (p > 0.05) in total protein, cholesterol, globulin, triglycerides, creatinine, AST, and ALT as well as hematological parameters between the breeds. However, the exotic DLW had a relatively high mean blood platelets and white blood cell concentration. Although the fecal nitrogen was higher in BLP and the urinary nitrogen was lower in the DLW, there were significant differences (p < 0.05) for urine, fecal, and total excreted nitrogen in both breeds. The lowest scores in nutrient digestibility were recorded with BLP compared to DWL, except for crude fibers. The results of this study demonstrated that using diet formulated with local ingredients and improved rearing conditions, Cameroonian local indigenous pigs have a better productivity compared to exotic breeds. It suggests that efforts should be made by authorities to promote and valorize the rearing of indigenous pigs in complement to exotic pig breeds in view of strengthening the Cameroonian pig industry.

ABSTRACT

Soil salinization effects plant photosynthesis in a number of global ecosystems. In this study, photosynthetic and physiological parameters were used to elucidate the impacts of saline-alkaline stress on Cyperus esculentus L. (C. esculentus) seedling photosynthesis. The results demonstrate that salt stress, alkali stress and mixed salt and alkali stress treatments all have similar bell-shaped influences on photosynthesis. At low concentrations (0-100 mmol L-1), saline-alkaline stress promoted net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate and water use efficiency in C. esculentus. However, as the treatments increased in intensity (100-200 mmol L-1), plant photosynthetic parameters began to decline. We interpreted this as the capacity of C. esculentus to improve osmoregulatory capacity in low saline-alkaline stress treatments by accumulating photosynthetic pigment, proline and malondialdehyde to counterbalance the induced stress - an adaptive mechanism that failed once concentrations reached a critical threshold (100 mmol L-1). Stomatal conductance, maximum photosynthetic rate and actual photosynthetic rate all decreased with increasing concentration of the stress treatments, and intercellular carbon dioxide showed a decreasing and then increasing trend. These results indicated that when the saline-alkaline stress concentrations were low, C. esculentus seedlings showed obvious adaptive ability, but when the concentration increased further, the physiological processes of C. esculentus seedlings were significantly affected, with an obvious decrease in photosynthetic efficiency. This study provides a new understanding of the photosynthetic adaptation strategies of C. esculentus seedlings to varying concentrations of saline-alkaline stress.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most common complications of pregnancy, which is increasing annually. GDM can cause serious harm to both the mother and the offspring. However, the clinical indicators that predict pregnancy outcomes with GDM remain limited. Methods: This study included 3,229 pregnancies. Inflammatory markers were defective in the mother's peripheral blood. Also, the Chi-square test, logistic regression analyses and Spearman rank correlation coefficient were performed to evaluate inflammatory markers with pregnancy outcomes. The association between inflammatory markers and pregnancy outcomes was analyzed. The optimal cut-off values of inflammatory markers were calculated. Results: Finally, 3,229 women were included. 1852 (57.36%) participants suffered good pregnancy outcomes. This study revealed that the maternal age, the baseline BMI (kg/m2), the times of parity, and the level of lymphocyte, SII and SIRI significantly increased in poor pregnancy outcomes groups. Additionally, inflammatory markers, such as white blood cells (WBC), neutrophils, monocytes, platelet counts, lymphocytes, systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and systemic inflammation response index (SIRI) were related to pregnancy outcomes. Furthermore, the results revealed that the SII level had the highest odd rates (OR) [OR = 6.957; 95% CI (5.715-8.468)], followed by SIRI level [OR = 2.948; 95% CI (2.382-3.649)], the WBC counts [OR = 1.930; 95% CI (0.901-2.960)], the lymphocyte counts [OR = 1.668; 95% CI (1.412-1.970)], and baseline BMI [OR = 1.050; 95% (1.021-1.080)]. Conclusion: This study presented that the baseline SII and SIRI levels can be valuable biochemical markers to predict the pregnancy outcome with GDM with non-invasive procedures. They can help identify high-risk pregnant women with GDM early, provide a personalized intervention in time, and enhance perinatal surveillance.

Introduction The mandible constitutes one of the skull's largest and strongest bones. Growth spurts can influence it, and it has a variety of dimorphic traits that can be used to identify sex. In addition to observing, comparing, and evaluating the potential for mandibular ramus flexure and bigonial breadth to discriminate between sexes using digital orthopantomograms (OPG), a retrospective study was conducted to examine the validity of this method for sex estimation in the Indian population. Aim and objective This study aims to quantify sexual dimorphism by analyzing two mandibular parameters, the ramus flexure and the bigonial width, using orthopantomography (OPG). The objective is to determine the accuracy of sex determination using the ramus flexure and bigonial width. Materials and methods A total of 500 OPG images (250 males and 250 females) were analyzed using the Planmeca software (Helsinki, Finland). The ramus flexure was measured as the angle formed between the tangent to the inferior border of the mandible and the tangent to the posterior border of the ramus. The bigonial width was measured as the distance between the left and right gonion points. A statistical analysis was performed to assess sexual dimorphism and determine the accuracy of sex determination using these parameters. The study employed descriptive statistics, such as means and standard deviations, and an independent t-test to determine the significance of the characteristics in relation to males and females. Results The mean bigonial width for females was 193.3068 mm (SD = 13.51669 mm) and for males was 217.6308 mm (SD = 10.87453 mm), with a statistically significant difference (p = 0.000). The 95% confidence interval for the difference in the bigonial width between males and females was between -49.97173 mm and -43.93787 mm. For the ramus flexure, the mean was 0.0000 for both males and females (SD = 0.00000), with a significant difference between males and females (p = 0.003). The 95% confidence interval for the difference in the ramus flexure between males and females was between -0.59543 and -0.12457. Conclusion The results indicated significant sexual dimorphism in both the ramus flexure and bigonial width. This study demonstrated that the ramus flexure and bigonial width, measured using orthopantomography (OPG), exhibited significant sexual dimorphism. The analysis of these mandibular parameters provided valuable information for sex determination in forensic and anthropological contexts.

Purpose: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) combined with chemotherapy have become the first-line standard treatment for locally advanced or metastatic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The evidence also demonstrates improved synergistic effects of chemotherapy when combined with delayed administration of ICIs. In this study, we conducted a retrospective investigation into the treatment efficacy of taxol plus platinum (TP) chemotherapy combined with delayed administration of PD-1 inhibitors for ESCC patients. Patients and Methods: Clinical data of ESCC patients who received PD-1 inhibitors 3-5 days after TP chemotherapy as first-line treatment was retrospectively reviewed between January 2019 and April 2023. Clinical outcomes and treatment safety were analyzed. The potential roles of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and pan-immune-inflammation value (PIV) were investigated. Results: A total of 34 locally advanced, recurrent or metastatic ESCC patients received PD-1 inhibitors 3-5 days following TP chemotherapy were included. The objective response rate (ORR) and disease control rate (DCR) were 85.3% and 97.1% respectively. The median progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were 13.2 and 19.1 month respectively. Seven patients received radical surgery, 1 patient achieved pathologic complete response (pCR) and 3 patients achieved major pathologic response (MPR). Among the 27 patients without surgery, the median PFS and OS were 9.7 and 19.1 month respectively. A more favorable prognosis was correlated with NLR less than 3 at the 3rd and 4th cycle of immunochemotherapy. No significant correlations between other parameters (PLR, MLR and PIV) and prognosis were observed. A total of 22 patients developed grade 3-4 toxicity events. Conclusion: The optimized sequence of PD-1 inhibitors administered 3-5 days after TP chemotherapy as the first-line treatment of ESCC demonstrated favorable treatment efficacy. Pretreatment NLR of less than 3 at the 3rd and 4th cycle of immunochemotherapy is associated with a better prognosis.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Trail running is an emerging discipline with relatively few studies performed in ecological conditions. The aim of this work was to investigate if and how spatiotemporal parameters (STP) and kinematics differ between initial and final stage of a field trial. Methods: Twenty trail runners (10 F, 10 M) were recruited and ran a solo 9.1 km trial. During the test, participants wore a GPS watch and an IMU-based motion capture system. Running speed, elapsed time, STP and kinematics were compared between initial and final stage, separately for uphill (UH) and downhill (DH) sections. Results: Running speed decreased in the final stage ( p < 0.05 ). Total test time was more correlated to the time elapsed in UH sections. In the final stage and in both UH and DH sections, contact time and duty factor increased, whilst stride length and flight time decreased ( p < 0.05 ). In the final stage, ankle joint was more dorsiflexed in stance and swing phases in UH sections and stance phase only in DH sections ( p < 0.05 ). In the final stage, knee joint was less extended in swing phase in UH and DH sections, as well as less extended in stance in UH sections ( p < 0.05 ). In the final stage, hip joint was less flexed in the swing phase in UH and DH sections ( p < 0.05 ). In the final stage, forward trunk lean was higher across the entire gait cycle in in UH sections ( p < 0.05 ). Trunk contralateral axial rotation was lower, in DH sections ( p < 0.05 ). Discussion: During the final stage, results indicate a less efficient propulsion phase, in both UH and DH sections. In UH sections, results suggest lower energy generation at the ankle joint. In DH sections, results suggest that the kinematics of swing leg may play a role in sub-optimizing propulsion phase. This study demonstrates how, in UH and DH sections, similar changes in spatiotemporal parameters can be elicited by dissimilar changes in running kinematics. To optimize performance in trail running, coaches and practitioners are advised to work on different (incline-specific) aspects of running technique.

ABSTRACT

The Gram-positive bacterium Bacillus subtilis is extensively used in the industry for the secretory production of proteins with commercial value. To further improve its performance, this microbe has been the subject of extensive genome engineering efforts, especially the removal of large genomic regions that are dispensable or even counterproductive. Here, we present the genome-reduced B. subtilis strain IIG-Bs-27-39, which was obtained through systematic deletion of mobile genetic elements, as well as genes for extracellular proteases, sporulation, flagella formation, and antibiotic production. Different from previously characterized genome-reduced B. subtilis strains, the IIG-Bs-27-39 strain was still able to grow on minimal media. We used this feature to benchmark strain IIG-Bs-27-39 against its parental strain 168 with respect to heterologous protein production and metabolic parameters during bioreactor cultivation. The IIG-Bs-27-39 strain presented superior secretion of difficult-to-produce staphylococcal antigens, as well as higher specific growth rates and biomass yields. At the metabolic level, changes in byproduct formation and internal amino acid pools were observed, whereas energetic parameters such as the ATP yield, ATP/ADP levels, and adenylate energy charge were comparable between the two strains. Intriguingly, we observed a significant increase in the total cellular NADPH level during all tested conditions and increases in the NAD+ and NADP(H) pools during protein production. This indicates that the IIG-Bs-27-39 strain has more energy available for anabolic processes and protein production, thereby providing a link between strain physiology and production performance. On this basis, we conclude that the genome-reduced strain IIG-Bs-27-39 represents an attractive chassis for future biotechnological applications.
