ABSTRACT

AIM: To investigate the structural relationships among perceived stress (PS), positive psychological capital (PsyCap) and health literacy (HL) in patients with multiple chronic conditions (MCC) and construct a model to explore the relationships of PS and PsyCap on HL. BACKGROUND: HL is critical in the rehabilitation and management of patients with MCC. Extensive understanding of the relationships between research variables can help nursing staff to implement effective programmes that improve the level of HL of patients. However, currently there is no research that has evaluated the structural relationships among these variables using a single model. METHODS: This study adhered to the STROBE guidelines for reporting cross-sectional studies. The Health Literacy Scale for Chronic Patients, Chinese Perceived Stress Scale (CPSS) and Positive Psychological Capital Questionnaire were used to assess HL, PS and PsyCap, respectively. Questionnaires were distributed to 317 patients with MCC attending a tertiary general care hospital in China from February to May 2023, using convenience sampling approach. Structural equation modelling was used to validate the proposed model. RESULTS: The findings showed that PS has a negative relationship with HL and PsyCap. PS was indirectly associated with HL through PsyCap. The results indicated that PsyCap was positively associated with HL. The PS and PsyCap explained 64% of the variance in HL. CONCLUSIONS: The findings showed that the proposed model had high validity and structural relationships between chosen variables were observed for MCC patients. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: These results may help nursing staff develop strategies to improve the HL of patients with MCC, which should focus on reducing PS and enhancing PsyCap to improve HL. Nursing staff can provide targeted psychological counselling and health guidance for patients to alleviate negative emotions and further promote their HL. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Nursing research ability is an important force in improving the quality of nursing care and driving the development of the discipline. As the main force and reserve force of nursing research, master's degree nursing students should have certain research ability. The contributing factors and their relationships that challenge research ability among master's degree nursing students must be fully understood, as this level of knowledge can support the development of strategies and interventions that improve the research ability of master's degree nursing students. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the relationships among positive psychological capital, research motivation, and research ability by master's degree nursing students. In addition, we investigated whether research motivation mediates the relationship between positive psychological capital and research ability. DESIGN: A descriptive cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire. SETTING: The study sampled master's degree nursing students from colleges in Sichuan, Fujian, Hubei, and Tianjin Province, China. PARTICIPANTS: From February 2022 to April 2022, 377 master's degree nursing students were chosen by a convenience sample method. METHODS: Data were gathered using a general information questionnaire, the Positive Psychological Capital Questionnaire (PPCQ), the Research Motivation Scale (RMS), and the Nursing Research Ability of Self-Evaluation Questionnaire (NRASQ). Both SPSS 26.0 and Amos 28.0. were used to handle and analyze the data. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and structural equation modeling were all used in the data analysis process. The reporting followed the STROBE checklist. RESULTS: Positive psychological capital was found to be positively correlated with research ability (P < 0.01). Research motivation was also positively correlated with research ability (P < 0.01), and had a mediating effect on the relationship between positive psychological capital and research ability (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The positive psychological capital and research motivation of master's degree nursing students are positively correlated with research ability. Research motivation significantly mediates the relationship between positive psychological capital and research ability. The findings of this study can inform educational strategies and interventions for the development of research ability of master's degree nursing students.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Negotiable fate as a belief in coping with the difficulties and uncertainties of life has an impact on people's mental health. This study aims to understand the influence of negotiate fate on college students' life satisfaction and its underlying mechanism. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with the participation of 1523 students from six universities across China. The study aimed to measure the variables of negotiable fate, self-esteem, positive psychological capital, and life satisfaction of all participants. To investigate the effect of negotiable fate on college students' life satisfaction and the mediating roles of self-esteem and positive psychological capital in this relationship, a serial mediation effects model using Hayes' PROCESS was employed. Results: The results suggest that negotiable fate has a positive predictive effect on college students' life satisfaction. The impact of negotiable fate on college students' life satisfaction was mediated by self-esteem and positive psychological capital, and the chained mediation of self-esteem and positive psychological capital. Conclusion: To summarize, the belief of negotiable fate has practical significance for the enhancement of college student's mental health and quality of life, and the cultivation of college students' belief of negotiable fate can be actively promoted in the future to help them better cope with the uncertainties and challenges in their lives to improve their life satisfaction.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study establishes the relationships among role conflict, positive psychological capital, social support, job crafting, and job embeddedness among clinical nurses. The results are expected to provide a basis for efficient human resource management in hospitals. METHODS: Considering a 15% dropout rate, we distributed 300 copies of our questionnaire, of which 290 were returned. We used 260 responses in the final analysis after excluding 40 responses that were incomplete or showed an identical pattern in the item responses. Participants were clinical nurses with less than one year of experience in general and tertiary general hospitals in G province and D metropolitan city in South Korea. A structured questionnaire was administered from January 10 to February 28, 2022. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 26.0. We assessed the statistical significance using the bootstrapping method. RESULTS: The direct and total effects (both ß = 0.806, p =.007) of positive psychological capital on job crafting were significant. The direct and total effects (both ß = 0.451, p =.004) of social support on job crafting were significant. The direct (γ = 0.292, p =.055), indirect (γ = -. 671, p =.003), and total (γ = - 0.379, p =.008) effects of role conflict on job crafting were significant. The direct (γ = - 0.382, p =.007), indirect (γ = - 0.208 p =.003), and total (γ = - 0.589, p =.006) effects of role conflict on job embeddedness were significant. The direct and total (both ß = 0.548, p =.005) effects of job crafting on job embeddedness were significant. CONCLUSIONS: Nurses' job embeddedness is directly influenced by their job crafting, which is shaped by high levels of positive psychological capital and social support. When job crafting takes place, role conflict increases, and if job crafting becomes difficult because of severe role conflict, job embeddedness decreases. Therefore, to increase job embeddedness among clinical nurses, hospitals must implement support systems and programs to increase job autonomy, and positive psychological capital to promote job crafting.

ABSTRACT

The present study explores the intricate dynamics influencing the self-efficacy of Chinese university students through the interplay of participation in artistic activities, positive psychological capital, and emotional intelligence. In the context of technological advancements and various challenges post pandemic, this study delves into the multifaceted aspects of university life, where arts education plays a pivotal role in addressing students' emotional needs. By integrating emotional intelligence with self-efficacy, this study underscores the positive impact of artistic engagement on self-efficacy, while emphasizing on the transformative power of these pursuits. Also, this study establishes that the optimism and resilience contribute to this relationship by considering the mediating role of positive psychological capital. The moderating influence of emotional intelligence in the complex dynamics between arts education and positive psychological capital is another concern, thereby emphasizing the nuanced role of emotional intelligence. With a structured set of questions that were administered to 673 participants with 93.61% recovery rate, this study performs the Cronbach's α-test, validation factor, and several related tests in SPSSStatistics 29.0, bootstrap, and AMOS 25.0 software. Current results shows the importance of a holistic approach in Chinese institutions. With a focus on promoting artistic engagement to enhance students' self-efficacy, this study determines the profound impact of arts education on students' overall wellbeing and educational experience. In conclusion, this research highlights the constructive impact of artistic engagement on the self-efficacy of Chinese university students. Chinese institutions should encourage a varied range of artistic engagements as a response to the contemporary challenges confronted by their students.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: This study investigated the impact of nurse managers' transformational leadership on the subjective career success of staff nurses, particularly through exploring potential variations in this relationship based on nurses' positive psychological capital. BACKGROUND: Amid a challenging nursing environment, nurses' perceptions of career success affect their individual psychological satisfaction and improve work performance. Human resource strategies often include factors for workers' subjective career success, e.g., managers' transformational leadership and individual-level positive psychological capital. METHODS: This cross-sectional study collected survey data in 2021 from 348 staff nurses in 40 wards of a Korean tertiary hospital. The survey instruments included the Transformational Leadership tool, the Subjective Career Success Inventory, and the Psychological Capital Questionnaire. Multilevel hierarchical regression analysis and a simple slope test were used to examine moderating effects. The STROBE checklist was used for reporting. RESULTS: Nurses reported significantly higher subjective career success when they worked in units where unit managers' transformational leadership was greater. This relationship strengthened when nurses had high positive psychological capital. DISCUSSION: To enhance staff nurses' perceptions of career success, both managers' transformational leadership and individual nurses' positivity should be emphasized in nursing practice and education. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND NURSING POLICY: Comprehensive efforts to highlight managers' transformational leadership and staff nurses' positive psychological capital can enhance subjective career success, which in turn improve nurses' job performance and intention to stay. Nursing policymakers should value transformational leadership among managers so nurses can achieve their subjective goals. An organization-wide institutional system should be developed so nurses can receive support to strengthen their positivity. Future research should include interventions to foster managers' leadership and nurses' positive capital.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the correlation between positive psychological capital, post-traumatic growth, social support, and quality of life (QOL) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University from October 2022 to May 2023. A sample of 330 hospitalized SLE patients was selected for this study. The collected data included demographic information, the SLE disease activity index, the Positive Mental Capital Questionnaire, the Chinese version of the Post-Traumatic Growth Scale, the Social Support Rating Scale, and the Chinese version of the Lupus Quality of Life Scale. RESULTS: The QOL score among the 330 SLE patients was measured as M(P25, P75) of 105 (83.00,124.00). Positive psychological capital, post-traumatic growth, and social support demonstrated significant positive correlations with the QOL in SLE patients (p < 0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that literacy, disease level, disease duration, occupation, marital status, psychological capital, social support, and post-traumatic growth were influential factors associated with the QOL in SLE patients. CONCLUSION: Medical professionals should be attentive to the psychological well-being of SLE patients and should consider implementing early psychological interventions. These interventions are crucial for enhancing the QOL for individuals diagnosed with SLE.

ABSTRACT

Previous studies suggest that career plateaus have detrimental effects on employees' satisfaction and performance. Psychological distress generated by career plateaus hinders organizations from achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) of 'health and well-being at work' (SDG-3) and 'decent work' (SDG-8). How to mitigate the negative impact of career plateaus becomes the key to enhancing sustainable well-being at work. However, the influencing mechanisms of career plateaus have not been fully discussed, especially regarding employees' psychological processes. Drawing on the equity theory and the conservation of resource theory, this study examines the influence mechanism of career plateaus on employee job performance via organizational justice, with positive psychological capital moderating the process. Mplus and the Process macro for SPSS are adopted to conduct confirmatory factor analysis and regression analyses. Building on 368 supervisor-employee paired questionnaires with an average of eight employees per supervisor, empirical results indicate that employees who encounter career plateaus reduce their perceived organizational justice to discourage them from performing well in their jobs. Positive psychological capital, however, mitigates the negative effects of career plateaus on perceived organizational justice and the indirect effects of career plateaus on job performance through organizational justice. Theoretically, this study advances our understanding of the influence mechanism of career plateaus on employees' job performance. Practical implications are also drawn for organizations to alleviate the negative impact of career plateaus to promote sustainable well-being at work.

ABSTRACT

Due to construction industry projects' large-scale, long-period, and outdoor operation characteristics, employees' organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) plays an essential role in cost-saving, high-efficiency, and environmentally friendly development strategies. This study discusses how to improve employees' OCB from two levels of employees' psychological factors and corporate social responsibility (CSR) at the organizational level. We verified this study's hypotheses based on 336 valid questionnaires collected from 56 teams. The results indicated that (1) positive psychological capital (PsyCap) was a positive predictor of employees' OCB; (2) PsyCap was positively related to employees' prosocial motivation, and prosocial motivation partially mediated the relationship between PsyCap and employees' OCB; and (3) CSR moderated the relationship between PsyCap and prosocial motivation and played a significant moderating role between prosocial motivation and OCB. These findings provide an empirical research basis for the theories of conservation of resources (COR), self-determination, and affective events. This research also has managerial implications for improving employees' OCB in the construction industry.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is the malignant tumor with the highest morbidity and mortality rate in China. Although chemotherapy is effective in improving clinical symptoms, it causes a variety of acute and chronic side effects, seriously aggravating the psychological stress of patients. Laughter Yoga as a new type of aerobic exercise can effectively reduce stress levels and increase positive mood in patients. This study aimed to examine the effects of laughter yoga on perceived stress, positive psychological capital, and exercise capacity in lung cancer patients. METHODS: This study was a randomized, single-blind, parallel-group trial. The study enrolled 84 lung cancer chemotherapy patients from a general hospital in central China. These patients were randomly allocated to control and intervention groups (n = 42 per group) after baseline assessments. Patients in the control group received routine care and those in the intervention group received laughter yoga intervention. Perceived stress, positive psychological capital, and exercise capacity were assessed at baseline, immediately post-intervention. RESULTS: During the implementation of the study, there were 2 dropouts in each of the intervention and control groups. Ultimately, 80 patients in the control and intervention groups completed the trial. Patients who received laughter yoga intervention had significantly higher scores in positive psychological capital (P < .01, Cohen's d = 0.692) and exercise capacity (P < .01, Cohen's d = 0.659). Discernible differences were also observed in perceived stress (P < .01, Cohen's d = 1.087) between the 2 groups. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that laughter yoga is an effective way and may produce beneficial effects on perceived stress, positive psychological capital and exercise capacity.

Background: With the popularity of social media platforms, the use of social networks challenges the well-being and mental health of athletes. Motivation: Despite ongoing scholarly discussions about the effects of passive use of social network sites, few studies have examined the relationship between the passive use of social network sites and mental health in young athletes from a social comparison perspective. Hypothesis: To address this research gap, we draw on the social comparison and developmental systems theories to explore the mediating effect of upward social comparison on passive social network site use and mental health, as well as the moderating effects of positive psychological capital. Methods: We analyzed data about 350 young athletes from professional Chinese sports universities. Results: As predicted, passive use of social network sites by young athletes increased anxiety (ß = 0.26, p < 0.001) and decreased subjective well-being (ß = -0.35, p < 0.001). Upward social comparisons had positive (ß = 0.22, p < 0.001) and negative (ß = -0.34, p < 0.001) mediating effects in passive social network site use and anxiety/subjective well-being. Positive psychological capital played a moderating effect between upward social comparison and anxiety (ß = -0.28, p < 0.001), and subjective well-being (ß = 0.24, p < 0.001); the moderated mediation effect was also supported. Conclusion: Our study informs the current research by highlighting the importance of upward social comparison as a critical mechanism and positive psychological capital as a boundary condition. We suggest actively maintaining and enhancing positive psychological capital to mitigate the adverse effects of upward social comparison.

OBJECTIVE: The study investigated the effects of a short video app guided loving-kindness meditation (LKM) on college students' mindfulness, self-compassion, positive psychological capital, and suicide ideation. The purpose of the study is to investigate the intervention effect of LKM training on suicidal ideation among college students with the help of the short video application and to provide an empirical basis for the exploration of early suicide intervention strategies for college students. METHODS: We recruited 80 college students from a university in China. The final 74 eligible participants were divided into two groups: app use group (n = 37) and the control group (n = 37). The app group accepted an 8-week app use interference, while the control group underwent no interference. We measured four major variable factors (mindfulness, self-compassion, positive psychological capital, and suicide ideation) before and after the app use intervention. RESULTS: In the app group, self-compassion and positive psychological capital were significantly higher, and suicide ideation was significantly lower than the control group. In the control group, there were no noticeable differences in any of the four variables between the pre-test and post-test. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings demonstrate that the short video app guided LKM may help to improve self-compassion, and positive psychological capital, and reduce suicide ideation. The finding of the short video app-guided LKM's effect extends our understanding of the integrative effects of positive psychology and digital media on the reduction of suicide ideation.

Online communication is one of the most significant factors that affect the growth and development of contemporary college students. The purpose of this study was to examine the mechanisms of online social support in the relationship between online communication and the positive psychological capital of college students in China. Drawing on social exchange theory, the research employed a sample of 1,212 Chinese college students and incorporated online social support as a mediating variable. The investigation constructed a research model using the College Students' Online Communication Questionnaire, Online Social Support Questionnaire, and Positive Psychological Capital Questionnaire to examine the intricate relationship among online communication, online social support, and positive psychological capital. The study found that both online self-expression and online extended relationship actions positively influenced students' positive psychological capital. However, online social participation did not demonstrate an impact on this measure. Furthermore, online social support was found to partially mediate the connection between online self-expression and positive psychological capital as well as between online extended relationships and positive psychological capital. Online social support fully mediated the relationship between online social participation and positive psychological capital.

ABSTRACT

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has led to dramatic changes in the learning environment and living conditions of college students, who face enormous psychological challenges in the ubiquitous AI environment. Modern student-management research has focused on developing mechanisms for enhancing life satisfaction, alleviating emotional anxiety, and improving self-confidence. This study aims to investigate the influence of participation in cultural and artistic activities on college students' life satisfaction. Through a questionnaire survey and data analysis of 708 college students, this study found a significant positive relationship between participation in cultural and artistic activities and college students' life satisfaction. Further mediation analysis showed that positive psychological capital played a mediating role between participation in cultural and artistic activities and life satisfaction. Additionally, emotional intelligence was found to play a moderating role in this relationship, and college students with higher emotional intelligence had a more significant effect on positive psychological capital in terms of participation in cultural and artistic activities. The results of this study herein provide a new understanding of life satisfaction research among college students and offer practical guidance for promoting college students' mental health and psychological well-being. This research also demonstrates the importance of participation in cultural and artistic activities and encourages college students to be active therein to enhance their psychological capital and improve life satisfaction. Furthermore, the cultivation and enhancement of emotional intelligence is emphasized as a key factor for college students to improve their psychological well-being through cultural and artistic activities.

Positive psychology has recently gained a great momentum, which per se motivated us to scrutinize the correlation between teachers' positive psychological capital (TPPC) and their work engagement (WE). The correlation between these two variables has been discovered to be significant as it can create a friendly educational ambiance for the learners to passionately learn. Although several studies have been conducted regarding the aforementioned variables separately or with regard to some other variables, a study on their bond and importance has remained unaddressed. Therefore, the aim of this study is to find the relationship between TPPC and their WE. The participants of this study were 412 Chinese teachers (including 82 males, and 330 females) of different ages and levels of education. Two online instruments were utilized in this study, namely Positive Psychological Capital Scale and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES). The results showed a positive and significant association between these two variables. The implications of this study are finally discussed in light of previous studies. Some implications are also offered to EFL educators.

【Objective】 To analyze the relevant factors affecting the positive psychological capital and communication ability of phlebotomist in blood stations based on the theory of positive psychology and communication behavior, so as to provide reference for the development of professional nursing work in blood stations. 【Methods】 According to the Extensive Positive Psychological Capital Questionnaire and Zeng Kai′s Blood Donor Nurses Communication Ability Evaluation Scale, an online survey was conducted by WJX (a platform providing functions equivalent to Amazon Mechanical Turk) and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS25.0. 【Results】 The average score of positive psychological capital among phlebotomists was 4.78±0.75, with four dimensions (from high to low) as optimism 5.23±1.09, hope 4.9±0.92, self-efficacy 4.57±0.88 and resilience 4.52±0.69 (P0.05). There was a positive correlation between positive psychological capital and communication ability of phlebotomists(P<0.01). The academic qualifications, professional titles, training frequency and knowledge of self-perception are the factors affecting the positive psychological capital and communication ability of phlebotomists.. 【Conclusion】 Managers in blood collection and supply institutions should encourge phlebotomists to study, think and practice initiatively, and conduct education and training on psychological and professional quality of phlebotomists continuously.

BackgroundPsychological capital has a significant impact on individual post-traumatic growth and well-being. However, there is limited research on the psychological capital and its related factors among parents of children with leukemia. ObjectiveTo explore the psychological capital status of parents of children with leukemia and analyze its influencing factors, in order to provide references for formulating intervention strategies to improve the psychological capital among these parents. MethodsFrom March 2021 to April 2022, 143 parents of children diagnosed with leukemia from the Department of Pediatrics at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University was selected. The general demographic information questionnaire, Positive Psychological Capital Questionnaire (PPQ), Chinese-Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (C-PTGI) and Index of Well-being Scale (IWB) were used to investigate the participants. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to analyze the influencing factors of psychological capital. ResultsThe PPQ total score for parents of children with leukemia was (113.48±15.80). The PPQ total score showed positive correlations with the scores of C-PTGI and IWB (r=0.727, 0.598, P<0.01). The course of children's illness (β=0.136, P=0.017), parental education level (β=0.139, P=0.012) and C-PTGI score (β=0.622, P<0.01) were influencing factors of psychological capital among these parents, collectively explaining 57.6% of the total variability. ConclusionThe level of positive psychological capital among parents of children with leukemia warrants improvement. ABSTRACT

Objective: To study the relationship between compassion fatigue and overall happiness among firefighters, and the mediating role of psychological stress and positive psychological capital. Methods: A total of 894 firefighters in Shandong Province were selected as the research subjects using purposive sampling method. Questionnaires including the Professional Quality of Life Scale, the Military Psychological Stress Self-Assessment Scale, the Positive Psychological Capital Scale, and the Overall Happiness Scale were used for data collection. Results: The scores of compassion fatigue, psychological stress, positive psychological capital and overall happiness among firefighters were (40.1±13.5), (13.9±3.9), (133.0±26.4) and (84.9±15.2), respectively. There were correlations between compassion fatigue, psychological stress, positive psychological capital and overall happiness (all P<0.01). Psychological stress partially mediated the relationship between compassion fatigue and overall happiness, and the mediating effect accounted for 27.0% of the total effect. Positive psychological capital moderated the front half path and the direct path between compassion fatigue and overall happiness (all P<0.01). Conclusion: Compassion fatigue can directly or indirectly affect the firefighters' overall happiness. Psychological stress plays a partial mediating role and positive psychological capital plays a moderating role between compassion fatigue and overall happiness.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective The study investigated the effects of a short video app guided loving-kindness meditation (LKM) on college students' mindfulness, self-compassion, positive psychological capital, and suicide ideation. The purpose of the study is to investigate the intervention effect of LKM training on suicidal ideation among college students with the help of the short video application and to provide an empirical basis for the exploration of early suicide intervention strategies for college students. Methods We recruited 80 college students from a university in China. The final 74 eligible participants were divided into two groups: app use group (n = 37) and the control group (n = 37). The app group accepted an 8-week app use interference, while the control group underwent no interference. We measured four major variable factors (mindfulness, self-compassion, positive psychological capital, and suicide ideation) before and after the app use intervention. Results In the app group, self-compassion and positive psychological capital were significantly higher, and suicide ideation was significantly lower than the control group. In the control group, there were no noticeable differences in any of the four variables between the pre-test and post-test. Conclusions Our findings demonstrate that the short video app guided LKM may help to improve self-compassion, and positive psychological capital, and reduce suicide ideation. The finding of the short video app-guided LKM's effect extends our understanding of the integrative effects of positive psychology and digital media on the reduction of suicide ideation.
