ABSTRACT

During the first half of the 20th century, it was commonly assumed that radiation-induced health effects occur only when the dose exceeds a certain threshold. This idea was discarded for stochastic effects when more knowledge was gained about the mechanisms of radiation-induced cancer. Currently, a key tenet of the international system of radiological protection is the linear no-threshold (LNT) model where the risk of radiation-induced cancer is believed to be directly proportional to the dose received, even at dose levels where the effects cannot be proven directly. The validity of the LNT approach has been questioned on the basis of a claim that only conclusions that can be verified experimentally or epidemiologically are scientific and LNT should, thus, be discarded because the system of radiological protection must be based on solid science. The aim of this publication is to demonstrate that the LNT concept can be tested in principle and fulfils the criteria of a scientific hypothesis. The fact that the system of radiological protection is also based on ethics does not render it unscientific either. One of the fundamental ethical concepts underlying the LNT model is the precautionary principle. We explain why it is the best approach, based on science and ethics (as well as practical experience), in situations of prevailing uncertainty.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: There has been an alarming surge in the usage of social networking sites (SNSs) by healthcare professionals (HCPs) without adherence to the principles of professionalism. The widespread use of SNSs in medical practices has been coupled with reports of breaches of professional behaviors. Despite the benefits of SNSs, skepticism prevails about a clearly defined role for SNSs within medicine based upon the core principles of professionalism. Thus, there is a need to understand the manifestations of professionalism in the digital context, classically known as e-professionalism. This study systematically examines HCPs' perceptions of e-professionalism to advance a thorough understanding of e-professionalism. METHODS: This concept analysis was performed using the principle-based approach of Penrod and Hupcey. In January 2023, we searched the databases of PubMed and ISI Web of Science for English-language articles specific to 'e-professionalism' in the medical field. The final selected research corpus of 63 articles was analyzed in this study. RESULTS: A comprehensive analysis of the selected articles highlighted that e-professionalism is an epistemologically mature and distinct concept by a standard definition. However, inconsistencies in conceptual meanings were reported due to varied interpretations despite digital literacy. The pragmatic utility showed a lack of sound methodological and philosophical paradigms. Perhaps the rapid technological advancements and manifestations have hampered linguistic maturity. However, logically, e-professionalism is perceived as an extension of conventional professionalism but with a focus on a distinct framework with a set of attributes to be digitally relevant. CONCLUSION: This study identifies a scarcity of research about the collective perspective of essential stakeholders, underpinning the need to further explore e-professionalism due to its emerging complex nature within the digital context. There is also a recognition that a framework is essential to guide future HCPs to yield a profound understanding and to provide remediation strategies in the rapidly advancing medical field in digital realm.


This principle-based concept analysis provides a nuanced understanding of e-professionalism, addressing its theoretical integration, practical utility, linguistic challenges, and logical boundaries.E-professionalism is acknowledged as a distinct concept across medical disciplines but variations in its interpretation demands a standard, unified, and multi-construct framework.A wealth of generational perceptions surround the concept of e-professionalism, including digital literacy and competency gap, signifying the importance of tailored educational strategies to ensure healthcare professionals uphold high standards while practicing in the digital realm.

ABSTRACT

The human rights and mega sport events (SMEs) discourses gain massive importance and have grown immensely in recent years. Most of the time, the sports governance bodies are responsible for administration and management of these sport mega events. Keeping in consideration the situation regarding increasing involvement, the study focuses on the field of sport along with pleasure and basic rights. Through re-evaluation the commercial factors of sports, the mega governing bodies of sport (IOC & FIFA), and researchers discuss what is referred to commonly as Ruggie Principle, and both would be applied to IOC & FIFA practices, operation, and management regarding their events. This study is essential as it emphasizes the contribution and importance of carrying out human rights impact assessments, particularly in the context of hosting rights. The survey's findings reveal that human rights and due diligence assessments are integral components of organizations such as FIFA and the IOC. This study, being an empirical investigation, allowed us to arrive at some normative conclusions that had significant implications for practices and policy issues. Additionally, it laid the groundwork for future research in the crucial area of SMEs globally.

ABSTRACT

Marine elapid snakes are a diverse, predominantly Indo-West Pacific species group. The persistent removal of some species has an unquantified but potentially dire impact on populations. We conducted the first comprehensive review of the trade in marine elapid snakes based on published literature (1974-2022) and trade data from the only species (i.e., Hydrophis [Lapemis] curtus) whose trade is monitored internationally. Some species and populations were subjected to targeted harvest for their meat and skins for at least the last century; fisheries are possibly the most significant threat to populations of marine elapids, with the highest numbers being exploited either accidentally, incidentally, or opportunistically in Southeast Asian fisheries targeting other seafood, including demersal trawl and squid fisheries. Southeast Asia is the core region for exploitation of marine elapids. Annual offtake is >225,000 individuals of at least 8 species in the Gulf of Thailand. Of 72 recognized marine elapids (all non-CITES [Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora] species), Hydrophis curtus and Hydrophis cyanocinctus dominate the skin trade. Skins of H. curtus are traded mainly in East and Southeast Asia and, to some extent, Europe. Despite some baseline information on the trade of these species, the sustainability of their harvests, particularly in the context of the burgeoning and unmanaged nature of fisheries in the region, remains the major challenge. In an era of declining fish stocks, there has been an increasing trend to commercialize the harvest and use marine elapids that were once considered accidental bycatch and discarded. This trend will continue to pose a significant risk to these snakes unless appropriate fisheries and trade regulations are enforced. Applying the precautionary principle to prevent the overexploitation of sea snakes is an indispensable measure in which trade in regional populations should be regulated through CITES. Accordingly, management plans to identify core distribution regions of exploited species would be crucial for assigning national responsibilities to sustain species and populations in the long term.


Retos para la regulación del uso comercial de serpientes elápidas marinas en el Indo­Pacífico Resumen Las serpientes elápidas marinas son un grupo diverso de especies, predominante en el Indo­Pacífico Occidental. La eliminación persistente de algunas especies tiene un impacto no cuantificado pero potencialmente negativo sobre las poblaciones. Realizamos la primera revisión exhaustiva del comercio de serpientes elápidas marinas con base en la bibliografía publicada (1974­2022) y en los datos comerciales de la única especie (Hydrophis [Lapemis] curtus) cuyo mercado tiene monitoreo internacional. Algunas especies y poblaciones fueron objeto de capturas selectivas por su carne y pieles durante al menos el siglo pasado, las pesquerías son posiblemente la amenaza más importante para las poblaciones de elápidos marinos, ya que el mayor número se explota de forma accidental, incidental u oportunista en las pesquerías del sudeste asiático enfocadas en otros mariscos, incluidas las pesquerías demersales de arrastre y de calamar. El sudeste asiático es la principal región de explotación de elápidos marinos. La captura anual es >225,000 individuos de al menos ocho especies en el Golfo de Tailandia. La aplicación del principio de precaución para evitar la sobreexplotación de las serpientes marinas es una medida indispensable para regular el comercio de las poblaciones regionales a través de CITES. Por lo tanto, los planes de gestión para identificar las regiones núcleo de distribución de las especies explotadas serían cruciales para asignar responsabilidades nacionales para mantener las especies y las poblaciones a largo plazo.

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the postbiotic potential of extracellular products (ECPs) from Bacillus pumilus strains cultivated on microalgae-supplemented media. We assessed enzymatic and antimicrobial activities to select ECPs that enhance the digestive processes in gilthead seabream. Additionally, we explored the in vitro enzymatic capacity of the chosen postbiotics to hydrolyze macromolecules in microalgae. Finally, a feeding trial was conducted to determine the in vivo effects of the ECPs on Sparus aurata. In vitro enzymatic assays demonstrated diverse hydrolytic capacities among ECPs. All conditions exhibited antimicrobial activity against Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida, with variation in inhibitory effects against Vibrio harveyi and Tenacibaculum maritimum. Furthermore, in vitro assays revealed differences in protein hydrolysis and soluble protein concentration, influencing amino acid and reducing sugar release from microalgal biomass. These analyses facilitated a selection to test ECPs in vivo. Lastly, the in vivo experiment revealed no differences in the growth performance, nutrient utilization, and general metabolism of S. aurata fed the experimental diets. Dietary inclusion of postbiotics increased the activity of key digestive enzymes in fish compared to the control group, and particularly, values increased significantly when the fish were fed with the ECP-nanoparticulate-supplemented diet. In conclusion, the inclusion of microalgae in the culture media significantly influences the activity of extracellular products from B. pumilus strains, as evidenced in both in vitro and in vivo assays.

First-principle calculations based on density functional theory are employed to investigate the impact of graphene insertion on the electronic properties and Schottky barrier of MoS2/metals (Mg, Al, In, Cu, Ag, Au, Pd, Ti, and Sc) without deteriorating the intrinsic properties of the MoS2 layer. The results reveal that the charge transfer mainly occurs at the interface between the graphene and metal layers, with smaller transfer at the interface between bi-layer garphene or between graphene and MoS2. And the tunneling barrier exists at the interface between graphene and MoS2, which hinders electron injection from graphene to MoS2. Importantly, the Schottky barrier height ( Φ SB,N ) decreases upon graphene insertion into MoS2/metal contacts. Specifically, for single-layer graphene, the Φ SB,N of MoS2 contacted with Mg, In, Sc, and Ti are - 0.116 eV, - 0.116 eV, - 0.014 eV, and - 0.116 eV, respectively. Furthermore, with bilayer graphene, when by inserting bi-layer graphene, the negative n-type Schottky barrier of - 0.086 eV, - 0.114 eV, - 0.059 eV, - 0.008 eV, and - 0.0636 eV are observed for MoS2 contacted with the respective metals, respectively. These findings provide a practical guidance for developing and designing high-performance transition metal dichalcogenide nanoelectronic devices.

ABSTRACT

Acting means changing the environment according to one's own goals, and this often requires bodily movements as responses. How these responses are selected is a central question in contemporary cognitive psychology. The ideomotor principle offers a simple answer based on two assumptions: An agent first learns an association between a response and its effects. Later, this association can be used in a reverse way: when the agent wants to achieve a desired effect and activates its representation, the associated response representation becomes activated as well. This reversed use of the learned association is considered the means to select the required response. In three experiments we addressed two questions related to the first assumption: First, we tested whether effect representations generalize to more abstract conceptual knowledge. This is important, because outside the laboratory and in novel situations, effects are variable and not always exactly identical, such that generalization is necessary for successful actions. Second, the nature of the response-effect relation has been debated recently, and more data are necessary to put theorizing on firm empirical ground. Results of our experiments suggest that (a) abstraction to conceptual knowledge seems to occur only under very restricted situations, and (b) it seems that no (implicit) associations between responses and effects are learned, but rather (explicit) propositional knowledge in the form of rules.

ABSTRACT

Medical decisions about pediatric gastroenterology pathologies often involve collaboration between the medical team and the family. On occasions, conflict may arise between the individuals involved in decision making (team-family conflict) causing delays in managing a child's health condition. Little is known on the strategies that can be implemented to address such conflicts. Using the systematic review model by McCullough et al., an electronic literature search was conducted using PUBMED databases and SCOPUS. Studies published between 2001 and 2022 were analyzed to identify high-risk families, the barriers and facilitators involved in the team-family conflict and the circumstances in which healthcare professionals can be ethically justified to override parents' medical decisions and to trigger the state intervention. The present review provides recommendations on the more suitable ways to manage team-family conflict and gives a practical approach using a case vignette.

ABSTRACT

Background: Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) has become an important treatment approach for primary open angle glaucoma. Restoration of aqueous humour drainage by means of alloplastic implants represents a promising treatment option and is itself subject of methodological development. An adequate positioning in the targeted tissue regions is essential is important for the performance of our in-house developed Rostock glaucoma microstent (RGM). The aim of this study was to evaluate the applicability of two animal models and human donor eyes regarding RGM placement. Methods: Eyes were obtained from rabbits, pigs, and human body donations. After orbital exenterations, RGMs were placed in the anterior chamber draining in the subconjunctival space. X-ray contrast was increased by incubation in aqueous iodine solution for subsequent detailed micro-computed tomography (micro-CT)-based visualization and analysis. Results: In contrast to the human and porcine eyes, the stent extended far to the posterior pole with a more pronounced curvature along the globe in the rabbit eyes due to their smaller size. However, dysfunctional deformations were not depicted. Adequate positioning of the stent's inflow area in the anterior chamber and the outflow area in the Tenon space was achieved in both the animal models and the human eye. Conclusions: Micro-CT has proven to be a valuable tool for postoperative ex vivo evaluation of glaucoma drainage devices in its entire complexity. With regard to morphology, the porcine eye is the ideal animal model to test implantation procedures of the RGM. Nevertheless, rabbit eye morphology facilitates successful implantation results and provides all prerequisites for preclinical animal studies.

ABSTRACT

Neural networks demonstrate vulnerability to small, non-random perturbations, emerging as adversarial attacks. Such attacks, born from the gradient of the loss function relative to the input, are discerned as input conjugates, revealing a systemic fragility within the network structure. Intriguingly, a mathematical congruence manifests between this mechanism and the quantum physics' uncertainty principle, casting light on a hitherto unanticipated interdisciplinarity. This inherent susceptibility within neural network systems is generally intrinsic, highlighting not only the innate vulnerability of these networks, but also suggesting potential advancements in the interdisciplinary area for understanding these black-box networks.

ABSTRACT

A direct UV-Visible absorbance spectrophotometric method was developed for the simultaneous determination of uranium and nitric acid concentration in the PUREX process samples. The simulated system consisted of uranium and nitric acid in concentration range corresponding to reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel discharged from nuclear reactor was prepared. The absorbance of these samples was measured in the range of 400-470 nm at a scan speed of 100 nm/s and resultant spectra were recorded. The changes in wavelength maxima of U(VI) absorption spectrum at different nitric acid concentration was utilized to determine the concentration of uranium and nitric acid in the sample by orthogonal signal correction assisted principal component regression. After the principle component regression the RMSEP for test data (Uranium: 3-21 g/L and acidity: 2-12 M) were 0.7 g/L and 0.4 M respectively. This method is superior to conventional method being followed for routine analysis of plant control samples in view of minimizing the generation of radioactive analytical waste consisting other corrosive reagents and reducing radiation exposure to operators during analysis. This method is amenable for online monitoring also.

ABSTRACT

Symbionts dominate planetary diversity and three primary symbiont diversification processes have been proposed: co-speciation with hosts, speciation by host-switching, and within-host speciation. The last mechanism is prevalent among members of an extraordinary marine symbiosis in the Indian River Lagoon, Florida, composed of a host mantis shrimp, Lysiosquilla scabricauda, and seven host-specific commensal vasconielline "yoyo" clams (Galeommatoidea) that collectively occupy two distinct niches: burrow-wall-attached, and host-attached/ectocommensal. This within-host symbiont radiation provides a natural experiment to test how symbiont coexistence patterns are regulated in a common ancestral habitat. The competitive exclusion principle predicts that sister taxa produced by adaptive speciation (with distinct morphologies and within-burrow niches) are most likely to coexist whereas the neutral theory predicts no difference among adaptive and non-adaptive sister taxa co-occurrence. To test these predictions, we engaged in (1) field-censusing commensal species assemblages; (2) trophic niche analyses; (3) laboratory behavioral observations. Although predicted by both models, the field census found no mixed-niche commensal assemblages: multi-species burrows were exclusively composed of burrow-wall commensals. Their co-occurrence matched random assembly process expectations, but presence of the single ectocommensal species had a highly significant negative effect on recruitment of all burrow-wall commensal species (P < 0.001), including on its burrow-wall commensal sister species (P < 0.001). Our stable isotope data indicated that commensals are suspension feeders and that co-occurring burrow-wall commensals may exhibit trophic niche differentiation. The artificial burrow behavioral experiment yielded no evidence of spatial segregation among burrow-wall commensals, and it was terminated by a sudden breakdown of the host-commensal relationship resulting in a mass mortality of all commensals unattached to the host. This study system appears to contain two distinct, superimposed patterns of commensal distribution: (1) all burrow-wall commensal species; (2) the ectocommensal species. Burrow-wall commensals (the plesiomorphic condition) broadly adhere to neutral theory expectations of species assembly but the adaptive evolution of ectocommensalism has apparently led to ecological exclusion rather than coexistence, an inverse outcome of theoretical expectations. The ecological factors regulating the observed burrow-wall/ectocommensal exclusion are currently obscure but potentially include differential recruitment to host burrows and/or differential survival in "mixed" burrow assemblages, the latter potentially due to changes in host predatory behavior. Resampling host burrows during commensal recruitment peak periods and tracking burrow-wall commensal survival in host burrows with and without added ectocommensals could resolve this outstanding issue.

In this paper, a finite-time disturbance observer-based adaptive control strategy is proposed for the ship course control system subject to input saturation and external disturbances. Based on the Gaussian error function, a smooth saturation model is designed to avoid the input saturation of the system and reduce steering engine vibrations, and an auxiliary dynamic system is introduced to compensate for the effect of the rudder angle input inconsistency on the system. By constructing an auxiliary dynamic, a finite-time disturbance observer is designed to approximate the external disturbance of the system; an adaptive updating law is also constructed to estimate the upper bound of the derivative of the external disturbance. Combining the finite-time disturbance observer with the auxiliary dynamic system, a novel adaptive ship course control law is proposed by using the hyperbolic tangent function. Moreover, according to LaSalle's Invariance Principle, a system stability analysis method with loose stability conditions and easy realizations is designed, while the stability of the closed-loop system and the ultimately uniformly boundedness of all its signals are proven. Finally, the course control simulation analysis of a surface ship is carried out. The results show that the proposed control law has a strong resistance to external disturbances and a strong non-fragility to system parameter perturbations, which ensure that the course control system has great control performance.

ABSTRACT

Defect single-photon emitters (SPE) in gallium nitride (GaN) have garnered great attentions in recent years due to the advantages they offer, including the ability to operate at room temperature, narrow emission linewidths, and high brightness. Nevertheless, the precise nature of the single-photon emission mechanism remains uncertain due to the multitude of potential defects that can form in GaN. In this work, our systematical investigation with the ab initio calculation indicates that carbon and silicon, as common dopants in gallium nitride, can interact with intrinsic defects in GaN and form new high-speed defect single-photon sources. Our findings identify a ternary defect NGaVNCN that possesses a short lifetime of less than 1 ns and a small zero-photon line (ZPL) of 864 nm. In other words, this defect can serve as a high-speed single photon source in the short wavelength window for fiber communication. In sharp contrast, the Si-supported defect NGaVNSiN has a higher unoccupied defect energy level which enters the conduction band and is therefore unsuitable for single photon emission. A systematic investigation has been conducted into the potential defects, thermal stability, and single-photon emission properties. The relaxation calculation and self-consistent calculations employed the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof exchange-correlation functional and Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof exchange-correlation functional, respectively. These findings indicate the potential for high-performance single-photon sources through carbon or silicon doping of GaN.

ABSTRACT

L-asparaginases (ASP) and Doxorubicin (Dox) are both used in the treatment of leukemia, including in combination. We have attempted to investigate if their combination within the same targeted delivery vehicle can make such therapy more efficacious. We assembled a micellar system, where the inner hydrophobic core was loaded with Dox, while ASP would absorb at the surface due to electrostatic interactions. To make such absorption stronger, we conjugated the ASP with oligoamines, such as spermine, and the lipid components of the micelle-lipoic and oleic acids-with heparin. When loaded with Dox alone, the system yielded about a 10-fold improvement in cytotoxicity, as compared to free Dox. ASP alone showed about a 2.5-fold increase in cytotoxicity, so, assuming additivity of the effect, one could expect a 25-fold improvement when the two agents are applied in combination. But in reality, a combination of ASP + Dox loaded into the delivery system produced a synergy, with a whopping 50× improvement vs. free individual component. Pharmacokinetic studies have shown prolonged circulation of micellar formulations in the bloodstream as well as an increase in the effective concentration of Dox in micellar form and a reduction in Dox accumulation to the liver and heart (which reduces hepatotoxicity and cardiotoxicity). For the same reason, Dox's liposomal formulation has been in use in the treatment of multiple types of cancer, almost replacing the free drug. We believe that an opportunity to deliver a combination of two types of drugs to the same target cell may represent a further step towards improvement in the risk-benefit ratio in cancer treatment.

Sacrificial dilemmas such as the trolley problem play an important role in experimental philosophy (x-phi). But it is increasingly argued that, since we are not likely to encounter runaway trolleys in our daily life, the usefulness of such thought experiments for understanding moral judgments in more ecologically valid contexts may be limited. However, similar sacrificial dilemmas are experienced in real life by animal research decision makers. As part of their job, they must make decisions about the suffering, and often the death, of many non-human animals. For this reason, a context-specific investigation of so-called "3R dilemmas" (i.e., dilemmas where there is a conflict between the principles of replacement, reduction, and refinement of the use of animals in research) is essential to improve the situation of both non-human animals and human stakeholders. An approach well suited for such investigation is experimental philosophical bioethics ("bioxphi"), which draws on methods similar to x-phi to probe more realistic, practical scenarios with an eye to informing normative debates and ethical policy. In this article, we argue for a need to investigate 3R dilemmas among professional decision-makers using the tools of bioxphi. In a first step, we define 3R dilemmas and discuss previous investigations of professionals' attitudes in such cases. In a second step, we show how bioxphi is a promising method to investigate the whys and hows of professional decision-making in 3R dilemmas. In a last step, we provide a bioxphi template for 3R dilemmas, give recommendations on its use, explore the normative relevance of data collected by such means, and discuss important limitations.

ABSTRACT

Perceptual grouping, a fundamental mechanism in our visual system, significantly influences our interpretation of and interaction with the surrounding world. This study explores the impact of the proximity principle from the perspective of the Two Visual Systems (TVS) model. The TVS model argues that the visual system comprises two distinct streams: the ventral stream, which forms the neural basis for "vision-for-perception," and the dorsal stream, which underlies "vision-for-action." We designed a perceptual grouping task using dot lattices as well as a line-orientation discrimination task. Data were collected using vocal and mouse methods for the vision-for-perception mode, and joystick and pen-paper methods for the vision-for-action mode. Each method, except for vocal, included separate blocks for right and left hands. The proximity data were fitted using exponential and power models. Linear mixed-effects models were used for the statistical analyses. The results revealed similar line-orientation discrimination accuracy across all conditions. The exponential model emerged as the best fit, demonstrating adherence to the Pure Distance Law in both perceptual modes. Sensitivity to the proximity principle was higher in the vision-for-action mode compared to the vision-for-perception. In terms of orientation biases, a strong preference for vertical orientation was observed in the vision-for-perception mode, whereas a noticeable preference toward either of the oblique orientations was detected in the vision-for-action mode. Analysis of free-drawn lines demonstrated an affordance bias in the vision-for-action mode. This suggests a remarkable tendency to perceive organizations within specific orientations that offer more affordances due to the interaction between the body postures and tools.

ABSTRACT

There has been a lot of discussion about Heisenberg's Umdeutung paper of 1925, which is universally credited as the first formulation of modern quantum mechanics. Much of this discussion has been characterized by puzzlement over the manner in which Heisenberg arrived at his formulation, supposedly through Bohr's atomic theory in conjunction with two philosophical principles, namely the Correspondence Principle and the Observability Principle. I provide textual, contextual, and philosophical evidence that the "prescriptive-dynamical framework" - recently advocated in the literature on independent grounds - is the perfect perspective from which to understand Heisenberg's work and the significance of the two principles he utilized to arrive at it.

ABSTRACT

The dysregulation of kinases has emerged as a major class of targets for anticancer drug discovery given its node roles in the etiology of tumorigenesis, progression, invasion, and metastasis of malignancies, which is validated by the FDA approval of 28 small molecule kinase inhibitor (SMKI) drugs for cancer treatment at the end of 2015. While the preclinical and clinical data of these drugs are widely presented, it is highly essential to give an updated review on the medical indications, design principles and binding modes of these anti-tumor SMKIs approved by the FDA to offer insights for the future development of SMKIs with specific efficacy and safety.

ABSTRACT

In the present work, a glass system with developed composition consisting of B2O3, ZnO, Na2O and Fe2O3 samples has been investigated. Glass samples were prepared using the melt quenching method and the density of the system was measured using Archimedes' principle. Spectroscopic analysis using a gamma source and a high-purity germanium detector at four energies of 0.0595, 0.6617, 1.173, and 1.333 MeV emitted from Am-241, Cs-137, and Co-60 were used to determine the attenuation parameters of present glass composites. The sample containing 45 B2O3 + 10 Na2O + 40 ZnO + 5 Fe2O3 (coded BNZF-4) had the highest mass attenuation coefficient (MAC) value at all the energies discussed compared to the other composites. Whoever, the BNZF-1 sample had the lowest value at all ranges of energies. The transmission factors (TF, %) of the manufactured samples were calculated, at 0.0595 MeV (TF, %) values are 32.6429 and 6.4612 for samples BNZF-1 and BNZF-4, respectively. The statistical results demonstrated significantly better to increase the ZnO concentration in the sample, where the percentage of zinc oxide inside the prepared glass samples has the following direction BNZF -4 > BNZF -3 > BNZF -2 > BNZF -1. The significance of this study is that transparent, environmentally harmless glass composites with relatively high density have been prepared that can be used as shielding materials against gamma rays, especially at low energies.
