ABSTRACT

Predicting groundwater potential is crucial for identifying the spatial distribution of groundwater in a region. It serves as an essential guide for the development, utilization, and protection of groundwater resources. Previous studies have primarily emphasized finding the most accurate prediction model for groundwater potential while giving less attention to the selection of training features and sample sizes. This study aims to predict groundwater potential within Qinghai Province using automated machine learning technology and assess the influence of sample sizes and feature selection on prediction accuracy. Sixteen groundwater conditioning factors were categorized into categorical and numerical variables. Four feature selection modes were utilized as input in training the model. The results indicated that, except for correlations between evaporation and landforms (- 0.8) and precipitation and normalized difference vegetation index (0.8), the Pearson correlation coefficients among the remaining sixteen factors were ≤ 0.5 or ≥ - 0.5. The models XGB-ALL, RF-Entropy, ET-CRITIC, and XGB-PCA yielded accuracy scores of 0.783, 0.685, 0.745, and 0.703, and area under curve (AUC) of 0.819, 0.724, 0.779, and 0.747, respectively. If enough samples are available with the tree model, an increased number of features can improve prediction accuracy. The principal component analysis method showed difficulty in reducing the dimensionality of the input space, while the Entropy method proved efficient. The accuracy and AUC value of the prediction model improved with an increasing number of samples. Training with 8 features and 200 data points achieved an accuracy of 0.745, sufficient to evaluate regional groundwater potential. As for training with 600 samples, the model's performance accuracy rose to 0.9, enabling precise groundwater potential prediction. The outputs of this research can provide decision-makers in groundwater resource management in Qinghai Province with crucial theoretical and practical support. The lessons learned can have future applications in similar situations.

ABSTRACT

Recently, extreme climate events have become more frequent under global warming, resulting in increasingly severe disaster losses. Essentially, the variability in precipitation is more uncertain compared to temperature. In this study, monthly precipitation data from 30 stations in Qinghai Province from 1960 to 2020 were selected to investigate the spatial-temporal variations in precipitation via linear tendency estimation, variability, cumulative anomaly, Mann-Kendall test, and spatial interpolation methods. The conclusions are as follows. (1) The annual and four seasons' average precipitation in Qinghai Province showed an increasing trend over the last 61 years, and the enhancement of summer and spring average precipitation contributed more to the annual. (2) There are increasing trends from northwest to southeast in the annual and seasonal mean precipitation, whose distributions are jointly controlled by the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM), the westerlies, and geomorphological features. (3) It is reasonable to conclude that the annual and four seasons' average precipitation has increased significantly since 2003 by integrating the results of variability, cumulative anomaly, and Mann-Kendall test. In other words, the significant intensification of humidity in Qinghai since 2003 is closely related to the ongoing intensification of the EASM and the westerly wind circulation, with the latter contributing considerably. These findings confirm the view of warming and humidification in northwest China and provide a reliable time point for discussing warming and humidification in northwest China.

ABSTRACT

The implementation of the western development strategy of China and the migration of air pollutants from eastern China might lead to a rapid increase in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) concentrations in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) and an amplified role of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) in ozone (O3) pollution. Qinghai province, situated on the northeast of the QTP, had fewer human activities compared to eastern China, while ozone pollution worsened over the years. To better capture recent emission trends and improve the accuracy of O3 simulation in Qinghai, this study proposed a top-down method, which combined the air quality modeling system RAMS-CMAQ, with formaldehyde (HCHO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) columns derived from TROPOMI as the constraints to improve the emission estimates of VOCs and NOx in July 2020, respectively. Through a series of sensitivity experiments, better quantified emission estimates of VOCs and NOx were obtained to be 1.33 and 0.34 Tg/yr, 2.5 and 2.1 times larger than the bottom-up ones. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of the top-down method and satellite observations constraints in improving VOCs and NOx emission estimates, resulting in a reduction in the differences between the observed and modeled HCHO and NO2 columns to 0.7 and 0.2 × 1015 molec/cm2, respectively. As a result, the simulated maximum daily 8-h average (MDA8) O3 concentrations increased from 58.9 to 81.6 µg/m3, which were closer to observations (85.4 µg/m3), the normalized mean bias (NMB) and normalized mean error (NME) values of hourly O3 concentrations changed from -24.7 % to -2.9 % and from 29.9 % to 22.3 %, respectively. This study showed the potential of top-down estimates to aide in the development of emission scenarios, which were critical for accurately simulating the O3 pollution and pollution control policy studies.

ABSTRACT

Ecosystem services (ESs) play vital roles in meeting the needs of human well-being and supporting sustainable development. However, there is limited research on how the types, amounts, interactions, and changes of the ESs collectively impact human well-being under the context of sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. This study selected Qinghai Province of China as the study area and intended to make such an attempt to fill this gap in terms of the following aspects: (1) analyzing the spatial patterns and changing trends of ten ESs (food supply, water supply, carbon sink, soil retention, sand fixation, hydrological regulation, flood mitigation, cultural service, net primary productivity, and habitat quality) in Qinghai Province from 2000 to 2018; (2)constructing a multi-level index system of human well-being under the framework of the SDGs, and setting the criteria to assess the level of local human well-being; and (3) building a structural equation model to explore the direct and indirect impacts of the types, amounts, interactions and changes of the ESs on actual human well-being and the gaps between actual and targeted human well-being. The findings revealed that: (1) most of the ecosystem services fluctuated with significant downward or upward trends during 2000-2018, except for four ESs (i.e., carbon sink, soil retention, flood mitigation, and habitat quality); (2) only a few indicators of local residents' well-being such as meat production, milk production, the numbers of medical technical personnel in hospitals and health centers, and the numbers of scientific and technical personnel met the SDG criteria in most time, while other indicators remained at low levels and there were large gaps between them and the SDG criteria; (3) actual human well-being and the gaps between actual and targeted human well-being were affected by the types, amounts, interactions and changes of the ESs with different degrees directly or indirectly. The approaches and results in this study are instructive for other regions of the world to make certain the roles of ESs in promoting human well-being and substantiating the SDGs.

ABSTRACT

Background: Here, we present data collected from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau that describes the variation of leaf functional traits across 32 plant species and could be used to investigate plant community functioning and predict the impact of climate change on biogeochemical cycles. The sampling area is located in Huangshui River Valley, in the southeast of Qinghai Province, China (36° 19' to 36° 53' N, 100° 59' to 102° 48' E). The area contains an alpine meadow typical of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. New information: This dataset includes field survey data on the functional properties of compound leaves from herbaceous species in the Huangshui River Basin of Qinghai Province, China, at altitudes from 1800 m to 4000 m in the summer of 2021. Data were collected from 326 plots, including 646 data points of compound leaf plants, spanning 32 compound leaf plant species belonging to 14 genera and four families. The study species were chosen from 47 families, 165 genera and 336 species present in the plots and all compound leaf plants were chosen within each plot. We picked the parts containing leaves, petioles and rachis from the study plants and separated the leaves from the plants. The cut compound leaf part was a leaflet, while the petiole and rachis were linear elements. The dataset includes information about the leaflet trait variation (i.e. leaflet area, leaflet dry mass, specific leaflet area and leaflet nitrogen content per unit dry mass) and linear elements' biomass and nitrogen content per unit dry mass (i.e. both petiole and rachis) of 646 compound leaves. This dataset can be used to analyse the evolution of leaf traits and the basic functioning of ecosystems. Moreover, the dataset provides an important basis for studying the species distribution and protection of biodiversity of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and evaluating ecosystem services. These data also support the high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin and have empirical and practical value for alpine biodiversity protection and ecosystem management.

ABSTRACT

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is considered a cost-effective alternative approach capable of determining the consumption and prevalence of drug use in communities, however, the application of WBE for estimating the prevalence of depression has seldom been reported. In this study, the prevalence of antidepressants was estimated in five cities in Qinghai Province, west China to examine the feasibility of using WBE to estimate the depression prevalence. Residual concentrations of the drugs varied from different wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in five cities. Venlafaxine (0.06-720 ng/L), O-desmethylvenlafaxine (1.31-1659 ng/L), paroxetine (

ABSTRACT

Currently used pesticides and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), nitrogen and phosphorus were analyzed in surface water from 26 sampling sites of agricultural areas in Qinghai Province to elucidate their pollution characteristics and sources. The results showed that most of these currently used pesticides, with the exception of chlorpyrifos, were generally not detected. However, two OCPs were commonly detected in surface water from four typical crop-producing areas. The residual concentrations of hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) measured 0~1.68 ng/L and 0.41~2.41 ng/L, respectively, in the water from the four crop-producing areas. The residues of these two OCPs pesticides were much lower than the standard limit of surface water environmental quality. The main forms of HCHs and DDTs were ß-HCH and pp'-DDE, respectively, indicating that the residues of HCHs and DDTs in the surface water of the four crop-producing areas in Qinghai were mainly derived from historical drugs that had degraded for a long time. The average concentrations of TN, NO3--N and NH4+-N in the surface water of 26 sampling sites of four typical crop areas in Qinghai Province were 2.95, 1.71 and 0.17 mg/L, respectively. According to the national surface water environmental quality standards, TN concentrations in 57.7% of these sampling sites exceeded the Class V water standards. The average concentration of NO3--N was more than 70 times that of NH4+-N. Nonetheless, there were no significant differences in the concentrations of TN, NO3--N and NH4+-N in the four crop-producing areas. The concentrations of NO3--N and NO3--N in the surface water were positively correlated with the TN concentration (p < 0.05), indicating that the sources of nitrogen in the surface water were relatively consistent. The average value of TP concentrations in the surface water from these sampling sites was 0.034 mg/L, with no significant differences among different producing areas. The N/P values in surface water from the four crop-producing areas of Qinghai Province had a range of 9.2~302. Phosphorus was the limiting factor for the proliferation of plankton in water. Reducing the input of phosphorus in these areas may be the key to preventing the deterioration of water quality. Significant negative and positive correlations exist between HCHs and nitrate nitrogen, and total phosphorus, respectively, which may be attributed to the proliferation of degrading microorganisms caused by the eutrophication of water. The research results will help to identify the characteristics and sources of surface water pollution in the crop-producing areas of Qinghai Province, and provide data support for Qinghai Province to build an export area for green organic agricultural and livestock products.

ABSTRACT

Using student and teacher open-ended questionnaires, and interviews with teachers and school principals and administrators, this study examined the bilingual learning difficulties faced by the Tibetan minority students in Qinghai Province, China, the challenges in meeting their needs, and the suggestions for coping with these challenges. The participants included 200 Tibetan minority students, 20 classroom teachers, and 10 school principals and administrators randomly selected from eight secondary schools located in eight different counties, where there are the most Tibetan minority students in Qinghai Province. The results showed that they experienced considerable difficulties in both spoken and written Chinese, which had prevented them from understanding the lectures, answering questions, interacting with peers in the classroom, and communicating with friends and classmates outside of classroom. The challenges in meeting their bilingual learning needs include: (a) a language choice dilemma for parents, (b) insufficient training of bilingual education teachers, (c) lack of bilingual education resources; (d) short of qualified teachers; (e) lack of parent-school communication; and (f) insufficient training of principals and administrators. Suggestions for coping with these challenges and educational implications are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Microplastic (MPs) is a new type of environmental pollutant that has been widely detected in recent years. It is one of the main environmental problems faced by the global ecosystem and has attracted widespread attention. However, few studies have focused on the occurrence and distribution of MPs in agroecosystems. Therefore, Qinghai Province, a typical northwest region of China, was selected as the research area to study the distribution characteristics of MPs in agricultural soils in the low-altitude areas. The results indicated that MPs were detected in all soil samples. The abundance of MPs in agricultural soils in Qinghai Province ranged from 240 to 3660 items·kg-1. MPs with size less than 0.5 mm dominated, accounting for 50% of the total MPs. The main types of MPs were film and fiber, accounting for 67% and 29% respectively. It was proved that the use of mulching film and sewage irrigation are the main sources of MPs, and the recovery and treatment of agricultural waste can reduce MPs pollution. At the same time, the spatial distribution characteristics of MPs in the soil of Qinghai Province were analyzed, and the results showed that the heavily polluted areas of MPs were mainly concentrated in the densely populated areas in the east of the province. In addition, the influence of altitude on MPs abundance was investigated, and there was a negative correlation between altitude and MPs abundance, and ultraviolet light may accelerate the aging and degradation of MPs. This study revealed the distribution characteristics of farmland soil pollution in typical northwest China, and provided an important theoretical basis for the subsequent study of MPs in agricultural ecosystems.

The H. pylori infection rate in people living at an altitude >3 500 m was higher than that of people living at an altitude between 1 500 m and 3 500 m (61.8%, 327/529 vs. 52.5%, 2 204/4 195), and the difference was statistically significant ( χ2=16.25, P<0.001). Compared with those without corresponding habits, the infection rate of H. pylori was higher in smokers (62.1%, 1 081/1 740 vs. 48.6%, 1 450/2 984), in people who had the habit of eating hand grabbed mutton (55.4%, 967/1 744 vs. 52.5%, 1 564/2 980), raw garlic (55.5%, 968/1 744 vs. 52.4%, 1 563/2 980), spicy food (55.6%, 1 471/2 647 vs. 51.0%, 1 060/2 077), sweet food (55.2%, 1 187/2 149 vs. 52.2%, 1 344/2 575), the infection rate of tea drinkers was lower (50.5%, 1 135/2 247 vs. 56.4%, 1 396/2 477), and the differences were statistically significant ( χ2=80.94, 3.89, 9.63, 4.36, 4.13 and 16.19, all P<0.05). The results of logistic regression analysis indicated that Tibetan ( OR=1.379, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.120 to 1.699), the Hui people ( OR=1.362, 95% CI 1.117 to 1.662), living at an altitude over 3 500 m ( OR=1.355, 95% CI 1.107 to 1.657), smoking ( OR=1.847, 95% CI 1.629 to 2.094), and spicy food ( OR=1.224, 95% CI 1.084 to 1.382) were independent risk factors of H. pylori infection (all P<0.05). Conclusions:The infection rate of H. pylori in Qinghai Province is higher than the average level in inland China. The infection rate of people with different ages, nationalities, altitudes of residence, occupations, living and eating habits were different. The infection rate of female over 30 years old is decreasing year by year. The infection risk is high in Hui people and Tibetan, spicy food lovers, smokers and people living at an altitude >3 500 m.

ABSTRACT

@#Abstract: Objective To analyze the pathogenic characteristics and epidemiological significance of human plague related strains in Qinghai Province in recent 30 years, so as to provide scientific basis for on-the-spot disposal and prevention and control measures of plague outbreak in Qinghai Province. Methods A total of 35 strains of Yersinia pestis isolated from 29 typical human plague outbreaks in Qinghai Province from 1980 to 2011 were selected and studied by biochemical fermentation experiments. Virulence factors detection of Fraction 1 antigen (Fra1), virulence antigen (VW), pigmentation (Pgm) and Yersinia pestis Ⅰ (PstⅠ), determinants and genotyping of differential regions (DFRs) were used to study the pathogenic characteristics. At the same time, according to the epidemic situation of human and animal plague in Qinghai Province in recent years, the current situation of plague prevention and control and epidemic characteristics were analyzed. Results The biotypes of 35 strains of Yersinia pestis were classical, and the biotypes of 29 strains (82.86%) were of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau type, mainly distributed in southern Qinghai and around lake areas, 2 strains (5.71%) belonged to Qilian Mountains type, mainly distributed in Qilian mountains, and 6 genotypes were identified by DFR. Among them, 16 were type 5, 12 were type 8, 2 were type 10, 1 was type 36, 3 were type 30 and 1 was type 1b, the strains of type 5 and 1b were mainly distributed around the lake and the southern foot of Qilian Mountains, while the strains of type 8, 10, 36 and 30 were mainly distributed in the southern part of Qinghai. Conclusions The pathogen of Yersinia pestis in Qinghai Plateau has complex biochemical types, the epidemic situation among animals is continuous year after year, the situation of prevention and control is serious, the occurrence and prevalence of plague seriously endanger people's health and social development, so it is necessary to do a solid job in the prevention and control of plague to ensure the safety of people's lives.

ABSTRACT

Studies of Holocene ostracods of the Tibetan Plateau have mostly centred around valves and carapaces collected from lake sediments, some at or near the substrate surface and others from short cores. Reports from habitats other than lakes are scarce, and few living species found in this region have appendages described, hindering further taxonomic and phylogenetic work. For this study collections of living ostracods were made in mostly ponds, as well as two rivers and one lake. Six species, including three previously undescribed, were recovered: Tonnacypris estonica (Järvekülg, 1960), Arctocypris edita n. sp., Cypris pubera O.F. Müller, 1776, Potamocypris variegata (Brady Norman, 1889), Ilyocypris tibeta n. sp., and Fabaeformiscandona monticulus n. sp. Specimens of Tonnacypris estonica include males, previously unknown for this species, and suggesting it is a geographical parthenogen. A revision of the fifth limb morphology of the genus Arctocypris, and a subsequent amended diagnosis of the genus are given. Based on carapace and appendage features, Eucypris mareotica (Fischer, 1855) is transferred to this genus: Arctocypris mareotica (Fischer, 1855) com. nov. There are now ca. 100 ostracod species reported from modern or subsurface sediments on the Tibetan Plateau, but only 19 of those can be confirmed as alive when collected (i.e. had appendages intact). The families Limnocytheridae and Ilyocyprididae are both relatively diverse on the plateau compared with the Palaearctic zoogeographical region generally. About one third of ostracod species reported from the Tibetan Plateau are only known from there, suggesting a potentially very high rate of endemism.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical characteristics of patients with advanced hepatic alveolar echinococcosis, so as to provide more evidence for the diagnosis and treatment of advanced hepatic alveolar echinococcosis. METHODS: The clinical records of 175 cases with hepatic alveolar echinococcosis admitted to the Affiliated Hospital of Qinghai University from 2012 to 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Among the 175 cases with hepatic alveolar echinococcosis, the male to female ratio was 1∶1.6, and the mean age was (38.6 ± 12.9) years (range, 11 to 69 years). 93.7% of the patients (164 cases) were Tibetan, and 79.4% (139 cases) were from Guoluo Prefecture. 73.7% (129 cases) were herdsmen, and 58.3% (102 cases) were illiterate. The major clinical symptoms included upper abdominal pain, yellowing of skin and mucosa, and scleral icterus. 69.1% of the lesions were located in bilateral livers, and 63.4% of the cases have 2 and more lesions. 53.7% of the cases have their inferior vena cava involved by the lesions. In addition, the most affected neighboring organ was diaphragmatic muscle (21.7%), and lung was the most affected distant metastatic site (40.6%). CONCLUSIONS: Advanced hepatic alveolar echinococcosis is highly prevalent in Guoluo Prefecture, Qinghai Province. Screening of this disease is required in this region and rational treatment scheme should be developed.

ABSTRACT

The frequency of Cryptosporidium infection in yaks from Qinghai province, People's Republic of China, was determined from examination of 1,027 fecal samples collected from 979 adult yaks and 48 yak calves during 4 seasons from 7 geographic areas within the province. PCR amplification of extracted DNA was used to characterize the different species of Cryptosporidium oocysts isolated by fecal examination. Twenty-six (2.53%) positive samples were identified and successfully sequenced: 17 Cryptosporidium ryanae (65.38%), 8 Cryptosporidium bovis (30.77%), and 1 Cryptosporidium baileyi (3.85%). The results of the study indicate that autumn is the primary season for transmission of Cryptosporidium to susceptible yak calves given the favorable temperatures and higher altitude of Qinghai province. To our knowledge, C. baileyi, a species predominately associated with birds (avian hosts), is described for the first time in yaks.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To amplify and sequence Coxl and Nadl genes in Echinococcus multilocularis isolates from Qinghai Province, and to create phylogenetic trees and molecular clocks, so as to provide evidence for estimating the evolutionary relationships and origins of E. multilocularis in Qinghai Province. METHODS: Twenty-two post-surgical specimens of patients with hepatic alveolar echinococcosis were sampled from Qinghai Provincial People's Hospital in 2017. The Coxl and Nadl genes were amplified from E. multilocularis samples and sequenced. Then, the gene sequences were aligned to the Coxl and Nadl genes of Echinococcus species in GenBank database. The intra-species variation was observed, and the phylogenetic tree and molecular clock were created. RESULTS: All E. multilocularis samples shared more than 99% genetic homology with the sequences of Coxl and Nadl genes from the E. multilocularis Asian strain in the GenBank database. A total of 6 genotypes were identified, including 2 isolates that had no 100% homology with the sequences of known genes in the GenBank database. Phylogenetic tree analysis revealed remarkable clustering of the E. multilocularis samples with the E. multilocularis Asian strain, and the E. multilocularis isolates from Qinghai Province were estimated to date back to 94 000 years ago by the molecular clock. CONCLUSIONS: The present study characterizes 6 E. multilocularis genotypes in Qinghai Province, including 2 novel genotypes. Asian strain is the predominant strain of E. multilocularis in Qinghai Province, and the E. multilocularis isolates from Qinghai Province date back to 94 000 years ago.
