ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Details findings from a project on the potential for arts activities and art therapy to support the mental health and wellbeing of children living in Kashmir. METHODS: The intervention engaged 30 school children over the course of one year who produced various forms of artwork and performances. In this paper, we report on project impacts, drawing on some of our qualitative measures including observations and interviews. RESULTS: Our research details impacts and improvements in areas of emotional expression, belonging, and agency. We also found an important role for schools to create safe, secure, and caring spaces to allow students to express themselves and work through traumatic feelings in a non-judgemental way. CONCLUSIONS: School-based arts interventions can play an important role in the mental health and wellbeing of children. Critical here, however, are dedicated space, time, and resources to provide a supportive environment and to sustain activity in long-term.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Use the Life Course Theory (LCT) to explore the effects of involvement with the justice system on the health of Latina women and their children. DESIGN: A supplementary analysis was conducted using data collected from the original study to answer a new research question. SETTING: South Central Texas. PARTICIPANTS: A primary qualitative data set from 12 Latina women involved with the justice system. METHODS: We applied LCT principles and used thematic content analysis as such we employed categoric distinction: lifespan development, time and place in individuals' lives, the timing of lives, human agency, and linked lives to analyze participants' narratives. RESULTS: Five themes emerged that aligned with LCT principles: (1) It feels like I'm living in my own prison; (2) What do I have to live for now; (3) It is like double punishment; (4) They made my choices; and (5) People didn't really understand. Participants felt helpless with few options to overcome their prior adversities, which affected their ability to make positive future choices. CONCLUSIONS: Findings highlight the potential, long-term, negative health consequences that may result from incarceration. Considering that justice system involvement can lead to more profound maternal and child health disparities, our findings suggest that greater advocacy from the nursing profession would increase accessibility to equitable and respectful maternity and women's health care services. Key points Involvement with the justice system can result in negative health consequences for women and their children. Maternal and child health disparities are often more profound after involvement with the justice system. Greater advocacy is needed from the nursing profession to ensure access to equitable and respectful maternity and women's health care services.

ABSTRACT

A recent group cognitive behavioral therapy (gCBT) intervention for dysmenorrhea conducted by our team demonstrated feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy at reducing menstrual pain. This study aimed to use qualitative analyses to explore participants' reflections about the intervention's group dynamic. Participants included 20 young women ages 18-24 years with average menstrual pain of 8.0 (SD = 1.1) on a 0-10 (0 = none, 10 = worst pain possible) numeric rating scale. Semi-structured individual and group interviews were conducted after the intervention. Researchers then conducted deductive, iterative thematic analysis using a template analysis approach. Two themes were generated: benefit and logistics. The benefit theme included two sub-themes: (1) camaraderie (an emotional, psychological, or social connection between participants); and (2) sharing (information, advice, or experiences). The logistics theme highlighted how the structure of the group influenced the dynamic and was divided into two sub-themes according to the time frame being described: (1) reactions (participants' experiences with how the group dynamic was facilitated); and (2) future (how the group structure could be improved). Results of this study contribute to the growing body of literature related to gCBT for pain conditions. Future research is needed to optimize the group dynamic and evaluate its specific therapeutic role in the treatment.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Digital peer support enhances engagement in mental and physical health services despite barriers such as location, transportation, and other accessibility constraints. Digital peer support involves live or automated peer support services delivered through technology media such as peer-to-peer networks, smartphone apps, and asynchronous and synchronous technologies. Supervision standards for digital peer support can determine important administrative, educative, and supportive guidelines for supervisors to maintain the practice of competent digital peer support, develop knowledgeable and skilled digital peer support specialists, clarify the role and responsibility of digital peer support specialists, and support specialists in both an emotional and developmental capacity. OBJECTIVE: Although digital peer support has expanded recently, there are no formal digital supervision standards. The aim of this study is to inform the development of supervision standards for digital peer support and introduce guidelines that supervisors can use to support, guide, and develop competencies in digital peer support specialists. METHODS: Peer support specialists that currently offer digital peer support services were recruited via an international email listserv of 1500 peer support specialists. Four 1-hour focus groups, with a total of 59 participants, took place in October 2020. Researchers used Rapid and Rigorous Qualitative Data Analysis methods. Researchers presented data transcripts to focus group participants for feedback and to determine if the researcher's interpretation of the data match their intended meanings. RESULTS: We identified 51 codes and 11 themes related to the development of supervision standards for digital peer support. Themes included (1) education on technology competency (43/197, 21.8%), (2) education on privacy, security, and confidentiality in digital devices and platforms (33/197, 16.8%), (3) education on peer support competencies and how they relate to digital peer support (25/197, 12.7%), (4) administrative guidelines (21/197, 10.7%), (5) education on the digital delivery of peer support (18/197, 9.1%), (6) education on technology access (17/197, 8.6%), (7) supervisor support of work-life balance (17/197, 8.6%), (8) emotional support (9/197, 4.6%), (9) administrative documentation (6/197, 3%), (10) education on suicide and crisis intervention (5/197, 2.5%), and (11) feedback (3/197, 1.5%). CONCLUSIONS: Currently, supervision standards from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for in-person peer support include administrative, educative, and supportive functions. However, digital peer support has necessitated supervision standard subthemes such as education on technology and privacy, support of work-life balance, and emotional support. Lack of digital supervision standards may lead to a breach in ethics and confidentiality, workforce stress, loss of productivity, loss of boundaries, and ineffectively serving users who participate in digital peer support services. Digital peer support specialists require specific knowledge and skills to communicate with service users and deliver peer support effectively, while supervisors require new knowledge and skills to effectively develop, support, and manage the digital peer support role.

BACKGROUND: Visual art can enhance wellbeing and quality-of-life; however, the experience of visual art for people with mild-to-moderate vision loss has not been examined. METHODS: Eight participants (6 females, 2 males; Mean age = 81 years, SD = 7.9, range 70-91 years; 4 with mild vision loss and 4 with moderate vision loss based on binocular visual acuity) completed a mixed-methods study comprising: a semi-structured interview on visual art experience; an eye examination; and questionnaires about visual functioning and quality-of-life. RESULTS: Various themes were identified: visual perception of art (e.g. altered colours, visual distortions, etc.), viewing conditions, elements of art, personal preference, deriving meaning, appreciation of art, impact of impaired visual perception, and social aspects of art. CONCLUSIONS: The overall experience of art is influenced by how an individual sees, perceives, and makes meaning from art. Even mild vision loss can impair this experience and impact emotional and social wellbeing.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic may have a negative impact on mental health, especially among older adults with chronic conditions who are more vulnerable to severe illness. In this qualitative study, we evaluated how the pandemic has impacted the ways that adults aged 50 and older with chronic conditions managed their mental health. METHODS: A total of 492 adults (M = 64.95 years, SD = 8.91, range = 50-94) who lived in Michigan (82.1%) and 33 other U.S. states completed one anonymous online survey between 14 May 14 and 9 July 2020. Open-ended responses were coded to ascertain relevant concepts and were reduced to develop major themes. RESULTS: We determined four main themes. The COVID-19 pandemic impacted how participants took care of their mental health through: (1) pandemic-related barriers to social interaction; (2) pandemic-related routine changes; (3) pandemic-related stress; and (4) pandemic-related changes to mental health service use. CONCLUSION: This study indicates that older adults with chronic conditions experienced various challenges to managing their mental health in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, but also showed considerable resilience. The findings identify potential targets of personalized interventions to preserve their well-being during this pandemic and in future public health crises.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: This review aims to understand the essence and relevance of qualitative research in pediatric dentistry and summarizes the most important information needed for a pediatric dentist before conducting a qualitative study. Methods: An electronic search was conducted on studies published from December 2019 until December 2021 using PubMed, Scopus, and King Abdulaziz University Digital library. Several keywords were used to identify the studies for this review. Results: Thirty-three studies involving qualitative methods in pediatric dentistry have been conducted on parents and dentists. Qualitative studies in pediatric dentistry are used to explore the perceptions of mothers and their children and to understand their behavior in different areas related to pediatric dentistry. Barriers to conducting qualitative studies with children include credibility, the influence of others on children's opinions, and differences that influence children's behavior while conducting the study. Conclusion: Qualitative methods in pediatric dentistry have been conducted on parents and dentists; however, little is known about the credibility and trustworthiness of conducting qualitative research with children. Future studies are needed to investigate effective interview techniques with children and more research should be conducted to evaluate the credibility and trustfulness of using children as a source to collect data in qualitative research.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Framework Matrix Analysis (FMA) and Applied Thematic Analysis (ATA) are qualitative methods that have not been as widely used/cited compared to content analysis or grounded theory. This paper compares methods of FMA with ATA for mobile health (mHealth) research. The same qualitative data were analyzed separately, using each methodology. The methods, utility, and results of each are compared, and recommendations made for their effective use. Methods: Formative qualitative data were collected in eight focus group discussions with physicians and nurses from three hospitals in Bangladesh. Focus groups were conducted via video conference in the local language, Bangla, and audio recorded. Audio recordings were used to complete a FMA of participants' opinions about key features of a novel mHealth application (app) designed to support clinical management in patients with acute diarrhea. The resulting framework matrix was shared with the app design team and used to guide iterative development of the product for a validation study of the app. Subsequently, focus group audio recordings were transcribed in Bangla then translated into English for ATA; transcripts and codes were entered into NVivo qualitative analysis software. Code summaries and thematic memos explored the clinical utility of the mHealth app including clinicians' attitudes about using this decision support tool. Results: Each of the two methods contributes differently to the research goal and have different implications for an mHealth research timeline. Recommendations for the effective use of each method in app development include: using FMA for data reduction where specific outcomes are needed to make programming and design decisions and using ATA to capture the more nuanced issues that guide use, product implementation, training, and workflow. Conclusions: By describing how both analytical methods were used in this context, this paper provides guidance and an illustration for use of these two methods, specifically in mHealth design.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a phase of higher vulnerability for suicidal behavior. In Germany, almost 500 adolescents and young adults aged 15-25 years commit suicide each year. Youths in rural areas are characterized by a higher likelihood of poorer mental health. In rural areas, appropriate support for adolescents and young adults in mental health crises is difficult to access. The general acceptability of digital communication in youths can make the provision of an eHealth tool a promising strategy. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the health needs regarding suicide prevention for adolescents and young adults in rural areas of Germany and Switzerland and to identify characteristics of suitable e-mental health interventions. METHODS: This study reports on a qualitative secondary analysis of archived data, which had been collected through formative participatory research. Using 32 semistructured interviews (individually or in groups of 2) with 13 adolescents and young adults (aged 18-25 years) and 23 experts from relevant fields, we applied a deductive-inductive methodological approach and used qualitative content analyses according to Kuckartz (2016). RESULTS: Experts as well as adolescents and young adults have reported health needs in digital suicide prevention. The health needs for rural adolescents and young adults in crises were characterized by several categories. First, the need for suicide prevention in general was highlighted. Additionally, the need for a peer concept and web-based suicide prevention were stressed. The factors influencing the acceptability of a peer-driven, web-based support were related to low-threshold access, lifelike intervention, anonymity, and trustworthiness. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest a need for suicide prevention services for adolescents and young adults in this rural setting. Peer-driven and web-based suicide prevention services may add an important element of support during crises. By establishing such a service, an improvement in mental health support and well-being could be enabled. These services should be developed with the participation of the target group, taking anonymity, trustworthiness, and low-threshold access into account.

BACKGROUND: This study examined employer experience with SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) asymptomatic testing through a social marketing lens. Social marketing uses commercial marketing principles to achieve socially beneficial ends including improved health and safety behavior. METHOD: Twenty employers across 11 occupational sectors were interviewed about implementation of COVID-19 testing from January through April 2021. Recorded transcripts were coded and analyzed using marketing's "Four P's": "product," "price," "place," "promotion." RESULTS: COVID-19 tests (product) were uncomfortable, were easily confused, and didn't solve problems articulated by employers. Testing was not widely available or didn't line up with shifts or locations (place). The perceived price, which included direct and associated costs (e.g., laboratory fees, productivity loss, logistical challenges) was high. Most crucially, the time to receive (PCR) results negated the major benefit of less time spent in quarantine and challenged employer trust. A potential audience segmentation strategy based on perceptions of exposure risk also emerged. CONCLUSIONS: This social marketing analysis suggests ways to improve the value proposition for asymptomatic testing through changes in product, price, and placement features in line with employers' expressed needs. Study findings can also inform creation of employee communication materials that balance perceived rewards of testing against perceived risks of exposure.

ABSTRACT

The New York State (NYS) Office of Mental Health created the NYS COVID-19 Emotional Support Helpline and enlisted graduate students to provide phone-based emotional support initially to the NYS community. This NYS-funded initiative transformed into providing psychosocial support for callers across the United States. Four NYS doctoral students acted as the helpline agents and received 251 individual calls from May-August 2020. The agents documented the calls with clinical notes which cannot be traced back to specific callers. The purpose of this retrospective qualitative study was to explore the themes that emerged from the calls to give voice to the trauma that callers were reporting during the early phases of the pandemic, and the resilience they demonstrated as they engaged with the Helpline. The agents' clinical transcripts were converted into codes using a critical-constructivist grounded theory approach (Levitt, 2021) with the NVIVO qualitative data analysis software. A second research team audited the initial codes for construct clarity. Emergent themes detailed the unique traumas that helpline callers divulged, how the agents provided support, and the callers' capacities for resilience. Recommendations are suggested to inform clinicians working with pandemic survivors, to offer guidance on providing distance or virtual interventions as well as to enhance policymakers' understanding of addressing mental health needs across populations served via the NYS COVID-19 Emotional Support Helpline.

ABSTRACT

The structural dialectic model of care provides a data analysis method that facilitates the identification of beliefs and structural and functional characteristics. To demonstrate the relevance of the structural dialectic model of care for data analysis integrating beliefs, scenarios and social actors. The characteristics and functions of the model are described and explained through an analysis of its application in fifteen doctoral theses (2009-2017). This model has three structures, the functional unit (beliefs), the functional element (social agents), and the functional framework (scenarios). The Structural Dialectic Model of Care constitutes a useful methodological tool for studies of nursing, organizing analysis of the data according to the dynamic and dialectical nature of their structures.

ABSTRACT

Visiting natural areas is considered an important factor of well-being. Along with urbanization, an extensive literature has developed that examines the presence of natural areas in urban settings for the benefit of urban dwellers. However, little is known about how much people perceive the presence of nature in different types of areas (such as city or countryside) and the places where they seek this presence. In this article, we present a study of these two questions through the interviews of 52 inhabitants from 13 municipalities (cities, suburbs and other areas) in Southern France. Through the quotes where nature was mentioned, we studied their perceptions of its presence in the different categories of areas they distinguish (city, countryside, mountain, seaside), as well as the various places where they established a contact with nature. Our results highlight the ranking of the areas where such a connection is pursued. Their interviews show both the importance of the residence itself as a place of contact with nature, and of the mobility patterns that make people feel closer to nature, such as relocation, multiple residences, short outings and longer trips. This qualitative study attempts to enrich the vision of the human connection with nature beyond the present focus on such connections in the city.

ABSTRACT

AIM: The aim of this study was to understand the perceptions of 11 Portuguese nurses' stakeholders regarding pressure ulcers prevention practice and reality in the hospital setting. METHODS: Convenience sampling was used to recruit nursing stakeholders for a heterogeneous focus group. A semi-structured interview was conducted with 11 nursing stakeholders involved in pressure ulcers prevention and/or patient safety. MaxQda 2020 qualitative analysis software was used in the content analysis and data processing. Informed consent was obtained, and anonymity was guaranteed. RESULTS: Four themes were approached in the interview: (1) Pressure ulcer risk assessment; (2) Nurses and doctors pressure ulcers monitoring; (3) Pressure ulcer risk profiles; and (4) Effective interventions to improve patient safety. The categorisation of the four themes was created aposteriori based on the 'Awareness/Knowledge/Competence, Opportunity, and Motivation - Behaviour Change Wheel' (adapted COM-B system). Interest, responsibility, autonomy, leadership and prioritisation for decision-making were some categories linked to motivation. Braden scale operationalisation, education given during undergraduate degree continued professional health education, missing care, reliability of the records and patients' clinical characteristics emerged as categories associated with awareness/knowledge/competence. Understaffing/nursing hours, health policies, electronic health records systems and clinical language used, access to appropriate equipment and resources, teamwork and clinical support specialist on tissue viability/wound care were some categories related to opportunity. CONCLUSIONS: Pressure ulcer prevention is complex and requires a focussed attitude, robust evidenced-based knowledge and enhanced skills in risk assessment, communication and team collaboration. The highlighted categories could be further analysed at an organisational level to develop tailored strategies that could contribute to successful evidence-based practice implementation. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: The findings provide directions for behavioural change in the hospital context related to pressure ulcers prevention through awareness/knowledge/competence, motivation and opportunity to improve care delivered.

ABSTRACT

This article presents VoicingHan project as a new form of life-review mediated by digital avatars promoting the reconstruction of self and identity through performativity. Whereas traditional life-review uses interview as primary means of the therapeutic process, VoicingHan is mediated by virtual bodies with self-guided participation in one's own life stories through embodied storytelling performance. VoicingHan enrolled 12-patients receiving outpatient palliative care at VCU Massey cancer center. The storytelling performances were recorded via avatar video format and distributed to participants for review and/or sharing. The present study considered the avatar videos as qualitative data emerging from these individually constructed life review narratives. In this article, the benefits of VoicngHan life-review were demonstrated by analyzing the avatar video narratives, based on theoretical and developmental frameworks. Through the lens of Social Constructivism, this qualitative study deepens our understanding of human-avatar interactions to engage life review process, within the liminal space of life-threatening illnesses.

INTRODUCTION: The Great CTSA Team Science Contest (GTSC) was developed to discover how Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) hubs promote and support team science [1]. The purpose of this study was a secondary qualitative analysis of the GTSC submissions to better understand the diversity of team science initiatives across the CTSA consortium. METHODS: Secondary qualitative analysis of the GTSC data addressed the following research questions, which defined the top-level coding: (1) What CTSA component sponsored it? (2) Who was the team doing the work? (3) Who were the intended beneficiaries? (4) What was the intended outcome? (5) What strategies did they use? (6) What translational science (TS) stage was addressed? (7) How do they align with the NCATS team science strategic goals? (8) How do the CTSA's team science efforts align with the National Academies Research Council (NRC) recommendations for enhancing the effectiveness of team science? RESULTS: The GTSC received 170 submissions from 45 unique CTSA hubs. Qualitative analysis revealed a great variety of team science strategies for virtually all team science stakeholders. In addition to strategies to promote team science, results show successful examples that focus on outcomes and illustrate ways of measuring success. CONCLUSIONS: The GTSC shows that the CTSA consortium is involved in an extremely diverse array of team science activities, which align well with both the NRC recommendations for enhancing the effectiveness of team science and the NCATS strategic goals for team science. Future research should evaluate the efficacy of team science strategies.

BACKGROUND: Given the significance of the birth experience on women's and babies' well-being, assessing and understanding maternal satisfaction is important for providing optimal care. While previous research has thoroughly reviewed women's levels of satisfaction with the childbirth experience from a multitude of different angles, there is a dearth of papers that use a gender lens in this area. The aim of this study is to explore through a gender perspective the circumstances attributed to both women's assessment of a positive birth experience and those which contribute to a lack of satisfaction with their birth experience. METHODS: Through the use of a local birth evaluation form at a Swedish labour ward, 190 women gave written evaluations of their birth experiences. The evaluations were divided into groups of positive, ambiguous, and negative evaluations. By means of a latent and constructionist thematic analysis based on word count, women's evaluations are discussed as reflections of the underlying sociocultural ideas, assumptions, and ideologies that shape women's realities. RESULTS: Three themes were identified: Grateful women and nurturing midwives doing gender together demonstrates how a gender-normative behaviour may influence a positive birth experience when based on a reciprocal relationship. Managing ambiguous feelings by sympathising with the midwife shows how women's internalised sense of gender can make women belittle their negative experiences and refrain from delivering criticism. The midwifery model of relational care impeded by the labour care organisation describes how the care women receive during labour and birth is regulated by an organisation not always adapted to the benefit of birthing women. CONCLUSIONS: Most women were very satisfied, predominantly with emotional support they received from the midwives. The latent constructionist thematic analysis also elicited women's mixed feelings towards the birth experience, with the majority of negative experiences directed towards the labour care organisation. Recognising the impact of institutional and medical discourses on childbirth, women's birth evaluations demonstrate the benefits and challenges of gender-normative behaviour, where women's internalised sense of gender was found to affect their experiences. A gender perspective may provide a useful tool in unveiling gender-normative complexities surrounding the childbirth experience.

ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of qualitative research approaches in the study of health, disease, and health service delivery and summarizes important considerations when designing research studies to address questions that ask the "how," "why," or "what" of a particular issue. As qualitative research encompasses distinct methodologies, brief descriptions of the main approaches and examples from the literature are provided. Guidance on how to evaluate quality in the design and reporting of qualitative studies is also discussed.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Social capital is often cited as shaping impacts of participatory arts, although the concept has not been systematically mapped in arts, health and wellbeing contexts. In wider health inequalities research, complex, differential, and sometimes negative impacts of social capital have been recognised. METHODS: This paper maps of social capital concepts in qualitative research as part of the UK What Works for Wellbeing evidence review programme on culture, sport and wellbeing. RESULTS: Studies often cite positive impacts of bonding and, to a lesser extent, bridging social capital. However, reported challenges suggest the need for a critical approach. Forms of linking social capital, such as reframing and political engagement to address social divisions, are less often cited but may be important in participatory arts and wellbeing. CONCLUSIONS: Future research should further specify dimensions of social capital as well as their nuanced effects in arts, and wellbeing contexts.

ABSTRACT

Objective. In the course of daily teaching responsibilities, pharmacy educators collect rich data that can provide valuable insight into student learning. This article describes the qualitative data analysis method of content analysis, which can be useful to pharmacy educators because of its application in the investigation of a wide variety of data sources, including textual, visual, and audio files. Findings. Both manifest and latent content analysis approaches are described, with several examples used to illustrate the processes. This article also offers insights into the variety of relevant terms and visualizations found in the content analysis literature. Finally, common threats to the reliability and validity of content analysis are discussed, along with suitable strategies to mitigate these risks during analysis. Summary. This review of content analysis as a qualitative data analysis method will provide clarity and actionable instruction for both novice and experienced pharmacy education researchers.
