ABSTRACT

Are teachers with better quality of work life (QWL) more innovative, and why? This study examined the relationship between teachers' QWL and their innovative behaviours, alongside the potential underlying mechanisms through psychological empowerment and teaching mindsets. A total of 321 elementary teachers completed a questionnaire. Path analysis demonstrated a significant positive association between QWL and innovative teaching behaviours. Moreover, both psychological empowerment and teaching mindsets significantly mediated this relationship. Specifically, teachers with higher QWL showed greater psychological empowerment and embraced stronger growth mindsets about their teaching abilities, which enables them to become more innovative in their teaching approaches. These findings suggest that quality of work life is not just a matter of teachers' well-being, but it also plays an important role in their teaching quality, which can ultimately benefit the institutions and the students.

ABSTRACT

Background/Aim: Pharmacists are one of the most essential healthcare professionals, with substantial clinical knowledge and skills in the use of medications. Pharmacists provide patient care services and contribute to the enhancement of health outcomes, which increases their workload. This study was conducted to determine the association between intention to leave work and quality of work life (QWL) of pharmacists in Saudi Arabia. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire provided as a paper-based survey using two scales (the Work-related Quality of Life [QoL] and Intention to Leave scales). In addition, this was combined with demographics to determine the relationship between intention to leave work and quality of work-life. Data were analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistical tests. Results: A total of 284 (76.5%), out of the 371 surveys distributed, were completed and returned. The average age and annual income of the respondents were 33.4 ± 6.5 years and 196,401 ± 82,306.7 SAR, respectively and 61.2% and 38.9% were male and female, respectively, whereas 62.9% were married and 53.2% reported having children. The multiple linear regression analysis conducted showed a significant negative relationship between QWL and the intention to leave work (ß = -0.131; 95% CI, -0.185 to -0.076). Conclusion: We found a significant association between the QWL and intention to leave. This indicates that a greater intention to leave was associated with a low or lousy QWL among Saudi pharmacists.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to document the quality of work life (QWL) among healthcare staff of intensive care units (ICUs) and emergency units during COVID-19 outbreak using the WHOQoL-BREF. METHODS: A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted for two months (May - June 2020) among healthcare staff working in intensive care units (ICUs) and emergency units of the hospitals under the National Guard Health Authority (NGHA) across five cities of Saudi Arabia. The study used the WHOQoL-BREF instrument to document the QWL through an electronic institutional survey. The data was analyzed through IBM SPSS version 23. The study was approved by an ethics committee. RESULTS: A total of 290 healthcare professionals responded to the survey. The mean overall quality of life score was 3.37 ± 0.97, general health = 3.66 ± 0.88, domains, i.e., physical = 11.67 ± 2.16, psychological = 13.08 ± 2.14, social = 13.22 ± 3.31 and environment = 12.38 ± 2.59. Respondents aged > 40 years, male gender, married status, being a physician and, having a work experience > 15 years and no extra working hours, had higher mean scores for several domains of Quality of life (QoL), overall QoL and general health (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The QWL among healthcare staff during COVID-19 pandemic was low. Demographic factors were mainly the determinants for a higher QWL while the variable of extra working hours was a determinant of lower QWL. Despite the pandemic, no COVID-19 related variables affected the work life of healthcare staff.

BACKGROUND: Quality of work life (QWL) is considered as a universal concept in human resource management and organizational development, and its promotion is the key to the success of organizations' management. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the QWL in Iran through systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: In this study, all articles related to the QWL in Iran during the years 2011-2017 were systemically reviewed by searching national and international databases such as Science Direct, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Springer, SID, Magiran, Barakat Knowledge Network System, Medlib, and the Google Scholar search engine using valid keywords. The results of the studies were combined using the random effects model. The heterogeneity of studies was studied using the I2 index. Data analysis was done using STATA ver 11. RESULTS: The mean QWL score of 15,323 samples were 60.13, 36.80, 76.19, 58.90, 68.78, 50.69, 32.24, 8.01, 70.63, 39.70, and 44.41 based on Walton, Casio, Sirgy, Mirsepasi, SF-36, Ghasem zadeh, Dehghan, Dargahi, NIOSH, Venlar, Quality of nursing work life questionnaires, respectively. Meta-regression showed that the QWL of employees had no significant relationship with the sample size and years of research. CONCLUSIONS: The mean score of QWL in Iranian employees was 56.90, with the highest and the lowest score for the questionnaire.

@#Background: Quality of Work Life (QWL) is a subset of the quality of life which expresses the interactions between workers and their total working environment with individual or human dimension. Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of QWL among Malaysian workers. Methods: 2740 respondents (1921 males and 819 females) were randomly selected from 11 different industries from all states of Malaysia. Respondents were aged between 18 to more than 55 years and were a local OSH Personnel and local general workers. Face to face interviews were conducted in all the selected industries using a structured questionnaire form adapted from Malaysian OSH Profile 2016. Respondents have completed the questionnaire under instructions and supervision of the research team. Results: Majority of the respondents were male (70.1%) and from manufacturing industries (76.3%). 50% of the respondents identified a high level of QWL in each component like not having a stress with the work load (85.5%), good work environment (78.4%), family life (83.1% and 83.6%), enough income and distribution (58.9%), good communication and harmonies relationship between colleagues and boss (93.4% and 88.7%), good facilities (88.6%), welfare at work (71.3%) and productive working condition (80.8%). There is a significant difference between QWL and type of industries [F(10)=12.897, p=0.001] where agriculture industry had the highest QWL. There is significant difference between QWL and gender (p=0.009) where male reported higher QWL compared to female. Conclusion: These findings could be used by the organizations in order to enhance its performance, productivity, employees’ commitment and satisfaction.
