ABSTRACT

Abstract The present study was carried out to determine incidence of overweight and obesity in Pakistani servicemen with reference to their area of duty, feeding habits and also to identify risk factors. Accordingly, 2,501 servicemen selected from all over Pakistan using multiple stage stratified sampling protocol. Nutrition assessment performed using body mass index (BMI), waist to hip ratio (WHR) and dietary assessment using food frequency questionnaire. Collected data was analyzed using the SPSS version 25. Regression was used to find risk factors of obesity and WHR. Results indicated that about 1/4th of servicemen were smokers. Approximately, 1/5th of them were overweight and about one quarter were eating fruits and vegetables for 3 days/ week and 4 days/week, respectively. Only 1/3rd of them were physically active for at least 40 minutes per day. Age and fruits intake were significantly predicting BMI with a direct relation and vegetable intake was negatively correlated to BMI of the servicemen. Age and rank were significant predictors of WHR while, physical activity was negatively correlated to WHR. It is concluded and suggested from our study that there is a need to modify eating patterns and habits as well as improving physical activity on daily basis for healthy and long life of the servicemen.

ABSTRACT

We tested measurement invariance of the Readiness to Change Questionnaire (RCQ) to evaluate its utility in assessing the stages of change in the context of brief intervention for alcohol use in opportunistic settings. Participants (N = 596) were patients admitted from three Level I trauma centers who were randomly assigned to one of three brief alcohol interventions. The RCQ was administered at baseline and 3-month follow-up. The RCQ was scalar invariant across biological sex and partially scalar invariant across race/ethnicity and alcohol use severity. Hispanic participants were higher on contemplation and action and Black participants were higher on action than White participants. Hazardous drinkers were lower in precontemplation and higher in contemplation and action than nonhazardous drinkers. The RCQ was scalar invariant across intervention conditions and time. Brief motivational intervention with a booster increased action from baseline to 3 month. These findings provide further support for the use of the RCQ.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Clinical measurement of the severity of allergic rhinitis (AR) can be assessed by symptoms score and patient quality of life (QoL). The magnitude of change in both symptoms and patient QoL should be considered in the management of AR. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) in AR in Thai population. METHODS: This prospective study recruited AR patients that attended our clinic during September 2011 to February 2012. The Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life (Rcq-36) questionnaire was used to evaluate patient QoL. The Global Rating of Change Scale (GRCS) was used to assess improvement or deterioration in condition. The MCID was determined using an anchor-based method based on the GRCS, which was compared to the MCID determined by a distribution-based method based on the standard deviation (SD). RESULTS: Three hundred seventy-two patients with chronic rhinitis were recruited. Eighty-four of those had positive skin prick test and be diagnosed as AR. Of those, 79 completed the study and were included in the final analysis. A change of 2 points on the GRCS yielded an MCID for overall QoL of 0.21 ± 0.57. When applying the distribution-based method, an SD of 1.5 SD yielded an MCID for QoL of 0.27. For the rhinitis symptoms domain, the MCID was 0.42 ± 0.72. CONCLUSIONS: The MCID for overall QoL and rhinitis symptoms in Thai AR patients was found to be 0.21 ± 0.57 and 0.42 ± 0.72, respectively. MCID can be applied for determining the clinical significance of treatment efficacy in AR.

ABSTRACT

The objective of the study was to analyze the morphofunctional characteristics from users of Third Age Fitness Centers (TAFC) in the city of Maringá, Parana State. The study involved 86 individuals 28 men (67.8 ± 5.4 years of age old) and 58 women (67.6 ± 6.0 years old). The morphofunctional parameters were divided into anthropometric (Body Mass Index BMI and Waist-Hip Ratio WHR) and functional (blood pressure BP). The method used for data processing was descriptive statistics. With regard to nutritional status, men showed higher BMI values compared to women. As for regional body fat distribution, women had higher WHR when separated by different strata, although in absolute values the male average was higher. As for BP, men showed a trend for higher values, but both genders had reductions in BP values in the reassessment, especially women. We can conclude that the three to six-month period of practice at ATA was not able to produce significant changes in the morphologic parameters of individuals over 60 years of age old, regardless of gender. Changes in cardiovascular function indicate important reductions in blood pressure levels, indicating that individualized prescription and regular physical activity are essentials to achieving most significant improvements.
