ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment poses a significant challenge following critical illness in the intensive care unit. A knowledge gap exists concerning how patients experience cognitive impairments. OBJECTIVES: The aim was to explore patients' and relatives' experiences of patients' cognitive impairment due to critical illness following an intensive care unit admission. METHODS: A qualitative multicentre study was conducted in Denmark with 3- and 6-month follow-ups using single and dyadic interviews. A phenomenological hermeneutic approach was adopted using a Ricoeur-inspired textual in-depth analysis method. The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research checklist was used. RESULTS: Three themes emerged from interviews with 18 patients and 14 relatives: 'It feels like living in a parallel world', 'Getting back to a normal everyday life with a vulnerable self', and 'Managing everyday life using self-invented strategies'. Patients used self-invented strategies to manage their vulnerability and newly acquired cognitive impairments when no help or support was provided specifically targeting their cognitive impairments. Not being as cognitively capable as they previously had been turned their lives upside down. Losing control and not being themselves made them vulnerable. Patients did not want to burden others. However, support from relatives was invaluable in their recovery and rehabilitation. CONCLUSIONS: Patients experienced multiple cognitive impairments affecting their adaption to everyday life. They strove to overcome their vulnerability using a variety of self-invented strategies and activities.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to identify perspectives of relatives and healthcare professionals regarding self-determination support for people with severe or profound intellectual and multiple disabilities, highlighting agreements and differences in their viewpoints. METHOD: Following a concept mapping study, online focus group meetings yielded statements on self-determination support from relatives (residential facilities: n = 6, family homes: n = 7) and healthcare professionals (residential facilities: n = 9, family home: n = 5). Participants clustered and rated statements, resulting in four concept maps interpreted by experts (N = 6). RESULTS: The 285 statements were categorised into 5-7 clusters per map, revealing key strategies for self-determination support: communication and choice making (facilitated by aids), sensitivity, familiarity, and collaboration among involved parties. CONCLUSION: Each group placed different emphasis on these strategies, highlighting importance of continuous support in their implementation. Future research should prioritise practical implementations of these strategies to enhance self-determination.

ABSTRACT

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: The gut microbiome is implicated in the disease process leading to clinical type 1 diabetes, but less is known about potential changes in the gut microbiome after the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes and implications in glucose homeostasis. We aimed to analyse potential associations between the gut microbiome composition and clinical and laboratory data during a 2 year follow-up of people with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes, recruited to the Innovative approaches to understanding and arresting type 1 diabetes (INNODIA) study. In addition, we analysed the microbiome composition in initially unaffected family members, who progressed to clinical type 1 diabetes during or after their follow-up for 4 years. METHODS: We characterised the gut microbiome composition of 98 individuals with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes (ND cohort) and 194 autoantibody-positive unaffected family members (UFM cohort), representing a subgroup of the INNODIA Natural History Study, using metagenomic sequencing. Participants from the ND cohort attended study visits within 6 weeks from the diagnosis and 3, 6, 12 and 24 months later for stool sample collection and laboratory tests (HbA1c, C-peptide, diabetes-associated autoantibodies). Participants from the UFM cohort were assessed at baseline and 6, 12, 18, 24 and 36 months later. RESULTS: We observed a longitudinal increase in 21 bacterial species in the ND cohort but not in the UFM cohort. The relative abundance of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii was inversely associated with the HbA1c levels at diagnosis (p=0.0019). The rate of the subsequent disease progression in the ND cohort, as assessed by change in HbA1c, C-peptide levels and insulin dose, was associated with the abundance of several bacterial species. Individuals with rapid decrease in C-peptide levels in the ND cohort had the lowest gut microbiome diversity. Nineteen individuals who were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in the UFM cohort had increased abundance of Sutterella sp. KLE1602 compared with the undiagnosed UFM individuals (p=1.2 × 10-4). CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: Our data revealed associations between the gut microbiome composition and the disease progression in individuals with recent-onset type 1 diabetes. Future mechanistic studies as well as animal studies and human trials are needed to further validate the significance and causality of these associations.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Glaucoma is the second leading cause of irreversible blindness globally. Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) can be genetically transmitted among first-degree relatives (FDRs). Therefore, screening for glaucoma in FDRs can significantly increase the chances of early detection. This study aimed to evaluate the differences in glaucoma screening uptake among FDRs in community and hospital-based settings and the underlying factors, as well as the prevalence of glaucoma in FDRs. Patients and Methods: Probands and FDRs who underwent screening were classified into two: community-based (group 1) and hospital-based (group 2). They were invited for screening by Village Health Volunteers and ophthalmic nurses, respectively, using information brochures. The FDRs underwent eye examinations, and those with suspected glaucoma underwent further testing for confirmation. Results: The response rates of probands were 261 (38.2%) for group 1 and 196 (48.8%) for group 2. The uptake screening of FDRs was 30.1% and 64.5%, respectively. Multivariate analysis identified that female FDRs {odds ratio [OR]=1.64; 95% CI 1.14-2.38} and those aged above 45 years (OR=2.06; 95% CI 1.32-3.21) were more likely to participate. FDRs residing outside Chanthaburi Province were less likely to attend than those within Chanthaburi (OR=0.36;95% CI 0.22-0.58). FDRs related to probands with blindness were more likely to participate (OR=1.69; 95% CI 1.13-2.54), as were FDRs with secondary school education or higher (OR=2.49;95% CI 1.48-4.18). Those receiving both medical and surgical treatment were more likely to participate (OR=2.22;95% CI 1.51-3.25). The prevalence of glaucoma was 8.3%, and 19.2% of screened FDRs were glaucoma suspects. Conclusion: Group 1 showed a significantly lower screening uptake than Group 2. The factors influencing the uptake of screening by FDRs are gender, age, geographic location, visual acuity of the worse eye in probands, education status of FDRs, and treatment modalities of probands.

ABSTRACT

Carrot (Daucus carota L.) is a high value, nutritious, and colorful crop, but delivering carrots from seed to table can be a struggle for carrot growers. Weed competitive ability is a critical trait for crop success that carrot and its apiaceous relatives often lack owing to their characteristic slow shoot growth and erratic seedling emergence, even among genetically uniform lines. This study is the first field-based, multi-year experiment to evaluate shoot-growth trait variation over a 100-day growing season in a carrot diversity panel (N=695) that includes genetically diverse carrot accessions from the United States Department of Agriculture National Plant Germplasm System. We report phenotypic variability for shoot-growth characteristics, the first broad-sense heritability estimates for seedling emergence (0.68 < H2 < 0.80) and early-season canopy coverage ( 0.61 < H2 < 0.65), and consistent broad-sense heritability for late-season canopy height (0.76 < H2 < 0.82), indicating quantitative inheritance and potential for improvement through plant breeding. Strong correlation between emergence and canopy coverage (0.62 < r < 0.72) suggests that improvement of seedling emergence has great potential to increase yield and weed competitive ability. Accessions with high emergence and vigorous canopy growth are of immediate use to breeders targeting stand establishment, weed-tolerance, or weed-suppressant carrots, which is of particular advantage to the organic carrot production sector, reducing the costs and labor associated with herbicide application and weeding. We developed a standardized vocabulary and protocol to describe shoot-growth and facilitate collaboration and communication across carrot research groups. Our study facilitates identification and utilization of carrot genetic resources, conservation of agrobiodiversity, and development of breeding stocks for weed-competitive ability, with the long-term goal of delivering improved carrot cultivars to breeders, growers, and consumers. Accession selection can be further optimized for efficient breeding by combining shoot growth data with phenological data in this study's companion paper to identify ideotypes based on global market needs.

PURPOSE: Brief Admission by self-referral (BA) is a standardized crisis-management intervention for individuals with self-harm and risk for suicide. This study explored relatives' experiences of BA. Relatives' perspectives may contribute to an increased understanding of the effects of BA given the relatives' role as support and informal caregivers as well as being co-sufferers. METHODS: Fourteen relatives to adults with access to BA within one Swedish region participated in focus groups analysed with reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS: We generated themes evolving around three meaning-based concepts: access (A low threshold to a safe back-up is crucial and obstacles may easily break faith), independence (Trust in their ability with care and respect), and recovery (The rest and relational recovery we all get are needed and invaluable). CONCLUSIONS: BA brings considerable value to users and relatives, by supporting them to take care of themselves and each other. Communication and involvement of relatives may enhance users' ability to overcome obstacles to accessing BA. Implementation and adherence may be strengthened by supervision of BA staff and education of emergency care staff. Resources are needed to improve access. Mapping hurdles to BA, support through peers and targeted psychoeducation may improve recovery for BA users and their relatives.

ABSTRACT

Increased soil salinization, tightly related to global warming and drought and exacerbated by intensified irrigation supply, implies highly detrimental effects on staple food crops such as wheat. The situation is particularly alarming for durum wheat (DW), better adapted to arid/semi-arid environments yet more sensitive to salt stress than bread wheat (BW). To enhance DW salinity tolerance, we resorted to chromosomally engineered materials with introgressions from allied halophytic Thinopyrum species. "Primary" recombinant lines (RLs), having portions of their 7AL arms distally replaced by 7el1L Th. ponticum segments, and "secondary" RLs, harboring Th. elongatum 7EL insertions "nested" into 7el1L segments, in addition to near-isogenic lines lacking any alien segment (CLs), cv. Om Rabia (OR) as salt tolerant control, and BW introgression lines with either most of 7el1 or the complete 7E chromosome substitution as additional CLs, were subjected to moderate (100 mM) and intense (200 mM) salt (NaCl) stress at early growth stages. The applied stress altered cell cycle progression, determining a general increase of cells in G1 and a reduction in S phase. Assessment of morpho-physiological and biochemical traits overall showed that the presence of Thinopyrum spp. segments was associated with considerably increased salinity tolerance versus its absence. For relative water content, Na+ accumulation and K+ retention in roots and leaves, oxidative stress indicators (malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide) and antioxidant enzyme activities, the observed differences between stressed and unstressed RLs versus CLs was of similar magnitude in "primary" and "secondary" types, suggesting that tolerance factors might reside in defined 7el1L shared portion(s). Nonetheless, the incremental contribution of 7EL segments emerged in various instances, greatly mitigating the effects of salt stress on root and leaf growth and on the quantity of photosynthetic pigments, boosting accumulation of compatible solutes and minimizing the decrease of a powerful antioxidant like ascorbate. The seemingly synergistic effect of 7el1L + 7EL segments/genes made "secondary" RLs able to often exceed cv. OR and equal or better perform than BW lines. Thus, transfer of a suite of genes from halophytic germplasm by use of fine chromosome engineering strategies may well be the way forward to enhance salinity tolerance of glycophytes, even the sensitive DW.

Background: Being a relative to a trauma patient may be a dramatic experience. Often, trauma centre nurses do not feel they have the competences needed to meet relatives experiencing a crisis. Therefore, a need exists to enhance their crisis management competencies. Objective: To investigate relatives' experiences of a nursing crisis management intervention on information, inclusion and support, including the importance of these needs in two Danish trauma centres. Design: A prospective intervention study based on interrupted time series. The intervention, conducted in 2020-2021, consisted of a crisis management training programme. Settings: The Trauma Centre of the Aarhus University Hospital and Aalborg University Hospital in Denmark. Participants: Relatives (18+ years) of critically ill or injured patients (n = 293). Methods: Data were collected using a 32-item questionnaire. The primary outcome was relatives' overall experience of the quality of the information, inclusion and support measured on a visual analogue scale (VAS) (0-10). Secondary outcomes were changes in risk ratios and scores between the periods for each of the three main variables. The outcome was measured as weighted and non-weighted scores, taking into account the importance of each variable. Besides use of interrupted time series, predictive and weight-adjusted analyses were performed. Time series comprised a before-period (6 months), an implementation period (3 months) and an after-period (6 months). Due to ceiling effect, the predictive analysis was dichotomized using the median scores for information, inclusion and support. Results: Overall, no differences were observed between the participants' characteristics in each of the three periods. Comparing the implementation period with the after-period revealed a statistically significant positive difference between the relatives' assessment of crisis management [p = 0.009]. Additionally, the probability of scoring >8 from before to after the intervention increased statistically significantly [Risk ratio 1.21, 95 % confidence interval 1.16-1.27]. The secondary outcomes showed that the greatest change over time was inclusion of relatives [Risk ratio, 1.25 95 % confidence interval 1.15-1.35]. Information had the greatest effect on relatives' experience of nurses' provision of crisis management and was also the needs area that relatives considered most important. However, information was also the needs area that evolved least during the study. Conclusions: Based on the selected cut-off levels, the intervention appeared to have a positive effect on relatives' experiences - especially inclusion of relatives. In the weighted analyses, information was considered most important and also had the greatest effect on relatives' overall experience. Nurses' crisis management competencies should be prioritized in trauma centres.

ABSTRACT

Cultivated spinach (Spinacia oleracea) is a dioecious species. We report high-quality genome sequences for its two closest wild relatives, Spinacia turkestanica and Spinacia tetrandra, which are also dioecious, and are used to study the genetics of spinach domestication. Using a combination of genomic approaches, we assembled genomes of both these species and analyzed them in comparison with the previously assembled S. oleracea genome. These species diverged c. 6.3 million years ago (Ma), while cultivated spinach split from S. turkestanica 0.8 Ma. In all three species, all six chromosomes include very large gene-poor, repeat-rich regions, which, in S. oleracea, are pericentromeric regions with very low recombination rates in both male and female genetic maps. We describe population genomic evidence that the similar regions in the wild species also recombine rarely. We characterized 282 structural variants (SVs) that have been selected during domestication. These regions include genes associated with leaf margin type and flowering time. We also describe evidence that the downy mildew resistance loci of cultivated spinach are derived from introgression from both wild spinach species. Collectively, this study reveals the genome architecture of spinach assemblies and highlights the importance of SVs during the domestication of cultivated spinach.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to: (1) summarize the quantitative evidence on the information needs of relatives of childhood cancer patients, survivors, and children deceased from cancer; and (2) identify factors associated with these needs. METHODS: PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, and CINAHL were systematically searched. The methodological quality of all included publications was assessed, and the extracted data were analyzed using narrative synthesis. RESULTS: Of 5810 identified articles, 45 were included. Information needs were classified as unmet, met (satisfied), and unspecified and categorized into five domains: medical information, cancer-related consequences, lifestyle, family, and support. Most unmet information needs concerned cancer-related consequences (e.g., late effects), while information needs on support were generally met. Migrant background and higher education were associated with higher information needs among parents. Siblings had lower information needs than parents. CONCLUSION: This systematic review provides a comprehensive overview of the information needs of relatives in the context of childhood cancer, showing that information on cancer-related consequences is needed most often. The socioeconomic background of the relatives needs continued consideration throughout the cancer trajectory. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Our findings suggest the need for personalized information. Healthcare professionals should adapt their communication strategies to respond to the different and evolving needs of all affected relatives.

ABSTRACT

Biennial vegetable crops are challenging to breed due to long breeding cycle times. At the same time, it is important to preserve a strong biennial growth habit, avoiding premature flowering that renders the crop unmarketable. Gene banks carry important genetic variation which may be essential to improve crop resilience, but these collections are underutilized due to lack of characterization for key traits like bolting tendency for biennial vegetable crops. Due to concerns about introducing undesirable traits such as premature flowering into elite germplasm, many accessions may not be considered for other key traits that benefit growers, leaving crops more vulnerable to pests, diseases, and abiotic stresses. In this study, we develop a method for characterizing flowering to identify accessions that are predominantly biennial, which could be incorporated into biennial breeding programs without substantially increasing the risk of annual growth habits. This should increase the use of these accessions if they are also sources of other important traits such as disease resistance. We developed the CarrotOmics flowering habit trait ontology and evaluated flowering habit in the largest (N=695), and most diverse collection of cultivated carrots studied to date. Over 80% of accessions were collected from the Eurasian supercontinent, which includes the primary and secondary centers of carrot diversity. We successfully identified untapped genetic diversity in biennial carrot germplasm (n=197 with 0% plants flowering) and predominantly-biennial germplasm (n=357 with <15% plants flowering). High broad-sense heritability for flowering habit (0.81 < H2< 0.93) indicates a strong genetic component of this trait, suggesting that these carrot accessions should be consistently biennial. Breeders can select biennial plants and eliminate annual plants from a predominantly biennial population. The establishment of the predominantly biennial subcategory nearly doubles the availability of germplasm with commercial potential and accounts for 54% of the germplasm collection we evaluated. This subcollection is a useful source of genetic diversity for breeders. This method could also be applied to other biennial vegetable genetic resources and to introduce higher levels of genetic diversity into commercial cultivars, to reduce crop genetic vulnerability. We encourage breeders and researchers of biennial crops to optimize this strategy for their particular crop.

MAIN CONCLUSION: Pearl millet wild relatives harbour novel alleles which could be utilized to broaden genetic base of cultivated species. Genomics-informed pre-breeding is needed to speed up introgression from wild to cultivated gene pool in pearl millet. Rising episodes of intense biotic and abiotic stresses challenge pearl millet production globally. Wild relatives provide a wide spectrum of novel alleles which could address challenges posed by climate change. Pre-breeding holds potential to introgress novel diversity in genetically narrow cultivated Pennisetum glaucum from diverse gene pool. Practical utilization of gene pool diversity remained elusive due to genetic intricacies. Harnessing promising traits from wild pennisetum is limited by lack of information on underlying candidate genes/QTLs. Next-Generation Omics provide vast scope to speed up pre-breeding in pearl millet. Genomic resources generated out of draft genome sequence and improved genome assemblies can be employed to utilize gene bank accessions effectively. The article highlights genetic richness in pearl millet and its utilization with a focus on harnessing next-generation Omics to empower pre-breeding.

BACKGROUND: There is a significant contribution of genetic factors to the etiology of bipolar disorder (BD). Unaffected first-degree relatives of patients (UR) with BD are at increased risk of developing mental disorders and may manifest cognitive impairments and alterations in brain functional and connective dynamics, akin to their affected relatives. METHODS: In this prospective longitudinal study, resting-state functional connectivity was used to explore stable and progressive markers of vulnerability i.e. abnormalities shared between UR and BD compared to healthy controls (HC) and resilience i.e. features unique to UR compared to HC and BD in full or partial remission (UR n = 72, mean age = 28.0 ± 7.2 years; HC n = 64, mean age = 30.0 ± 9.7 years; BD patients n = 91, mean age = 30.6 ± 7.7 years). Out of these, 34 UR, 48 BD, and 38 HC were investigated again following a mean time of 1.3 ± 0.4 years. RESULTS: At baseline, the UR showed lower connectivity values within the default mode network (DMN), frontoparietal network, and the salience network (SN) compared to HC. This connectivity pattern in UR remained stable over the follow-up period and was not present in BD, suggesting a resilience trait. The UR further demonstrated less negative connectivity between the DMN and SN compared to HC, abnormality that remained stable over time and was also present in BD, suggesting a vulnerability marker. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate the coexistence of both vulnerability-related abnormalities in resting-state connectivity, as well as adaptive changes possibly promoting resilience to psychopathology in individual at familial risk.

BACKGROUND: Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) is characterized by all three adverse survivorship dimensions: physical function, cognitive function and mental health status. AIM: This review aimed to describe the quality of life (QoL) of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) survivors with PICS after discharge and of their relatives with Family Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS-F) and to report anxiety, depression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD) in studies investigating PICS. STUDY DESIGN: A systematic review was carried out. We searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. This review was registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42022382123). RESULTS: We included 19 studies of PICS and PICS-F in this systematic review. Fourteen observational studies report the effects of PICS on depression, 12 studies on anxiety and nine on post-traumatic stress disorder and 10 on QoL. Mobility, personal care, usual activities and pain/discomfort in QoL were the domains most affected by PICS. A significant association was demonstrated between a high level of ICU survivors' anxiety and high levels of ICU relatives' burden. Strain-related symptoms and sleep disorders were problems encountered by ICU relatives with PICS-F. CONCLUSION: PICS and PICS-F were widespread experiences among ICU survivors and their ICU relatives, respectively. The results of this review showed the adverse effects of PICS and PICS-F on QoL. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: PICS and PICS-F strongly impact the rehabilitation process and are measured in terms of health costs, financial stress and potentially preventable readmission.

Introduction: This study aimed to determine trait- and state-dependent markers of schizophrenia by investigating facial emotion-recognition (FER) deficits in remitted patients with schizophrenia and their first-degree relatives (FR). Methods: Three groups were included: the Schizophrenia group (n=66), their unaffected FR group (n=40), and healthy controls (n=50) who were matched for age, sex, and years of education. A facial-labeling task was used to examine FER deficits using the following eight standardized expressions: happy, fearful, disgusted, angry, sad, contemptuous, surprised, and neutral. Results: There was a poorer accuracy in the recognition of sadness and anger in the Schizophrenia group as well as in contempt in both the Schizophrenia and FR groups compared with healthy controls. The response times for the recognition of contempt, sadness, and neutral emotion were delayed in the Schizophrenia group and those for fear were delayed in the Schizophrenia and FR groups compared with healthy controls. Conclusion: Concerning the accuracy in FER, sadness and anger can be considered state-dependent markers of remitted schizophrenia, and contempt is a trait-dependent marker of schizophrenia. Similarly, for response times in FER, contempt, sadness, and neutral emotion can be considered state-dependent markers of remitted schizophrenia, while fear is considered a trait-dependent marker of schizophrenia. These findings may contribute to the early diagnosis of schizophrenia and the development of relevant therapeutic interventions.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The mental health impact on relatives of cancer patients frequently goes unnoticed and is commonly undervalued. This study aimed to explore how personal factors such as the patient's degree of kin, marital status, cancer stage, and number of diagnosed family members are correlated with the severity of depression and anxiety among relatives of cancer patients. METHOD: This self-administered cross-sectional survey was conducted in Kuwait, employing a random sampling method to recruit participants. Depression and anxiety symptoms were assessed using the validated Arabic versions of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scale. RESULTS: The mean age of the relatives of the cancer patients was 38.36 years (±13.44), with a female majority (59.72%). The prevalence of depression in the examined population was 60.1%, with the majority having mild depression (39.3%). On the other hand, the prevalence of anxiety in the same group was 51.2%, with the majority having mild disease (27.5%). Being female and having a cancer patient relative in the metastasis stage put patients' relatives at a greater risk of depression and anxiety. CONCLUSION: The diagnosis of cancer necessitates mental health screenings for patients' relatives, as findings from our study indicate that these individuals are at a high risk of developing depression and anxiety. Targeted support and referrals to specialists are crucial for mitigating the impact on their well-being.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Young-onset dementia (YOD) symptoms often first present in the workplace, resulting in work performance challenges and eventually loss of employment. This study aims to investigate the experiences, work values, and support needs of employees with YOD and their relatives. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore the experiences, work values, and support needs of (former) employees with YOD and their relatives. Subsequently, separate focus group discussions were conducted for employees and relatives to review and prioritize interview findings. Inductive thematic analysis was applied to both datasets. RESULTS: A total of 15 interviews (six employees; nine relatives) and four focus group discussions (ten employees; six relatives) were conducted. Six themes emerged, with five revolving around the central theme: desire to work. The other themes represent essential contributing factors, including importance of receiving a YOD diagnosis; knowledge, awareness, and understanding regarding YOD; open communication, joint decision making, and collaboration; work adjustments, involvement, and support; phasing out work and future perspectives. CONCLUSION: The findings highlight a strong desire to work post-YOD diagnosis, serving as a foundation for developing workplace support tools and guidance. This has the potential to help individuals with YOD preserve their self-confidence and identity while working within their capabilities.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Falls are a major problem among adults over 60 years. Multiple preventive measures must be taken. Written information leaflets can support the knowledge transfer and positively influence recall of the information provided. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to ensure usefulness and understandability of the information leaflets on home fall prevention from the target groups' perspective. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey study with a feedback questionnaire for patients and relatives was conducted at a university hospital in Austria. Quantitative data analysis and qualitative content analysis according to Schreier were performed. RESULTS: The majority (63.9%) of patients rated the overall impression as "very good". 44.2% of the relatives rated it as "very good" and 23% as "good". The question "appealing design" was the only one with a statistically significant difference between patients and relatives. Subgroup analysis has shown a statistically significant difference between educational groups regarding the questions "easy to read" and "easy to understand". CONCLUSION: It could be shown that the information leaflets were already well tailored to the target group. The few comments regarding understandability were considered to improve the content of the information leaflets. A further evaluation regarding the benefit of the fall prevention leaflets in discharge management should be performed.
