ABSTRACT

Allelopathy is the main chemical means in the invasion process of exotic plants and one of the key factors in grassland degradation. In this experiment, we investigated the effects of ethyl acetate phase extract (EAE), n-butanol phase extract (BE) and aqueous phase extract (AE) from the aboveground (stems and leaves) and roots of Ligularia sagitta on seed germination and seedling growth of four Gramineae forages (Poa pratensis L. Festuca ovina L. Elymus nutans Griseb. Agropyron cristatum (L.) Gaertn.) in their sympatric domains and one Legosuminae forage (Medicago sativa L.). The chemical components in each phase extract of L. sagitta were determined with UHPLC-MS/MS non-targeted metabolomics, and the differential compounds were screened using Orthogonal Partial Least Squares-Discriminant Analysis (OPLS-DA). Within a set concentration range, EAE significantly inhibited seed germination and seedling growth of four Gramineae forages. BE and AE acted mainly in the seedling growth stage and did not significantly inhibit forage seed germination. P. pratensis was most sensitive to L. sagitta extracts; at 2.0 mg/mL of EAE from roots, germination energy and germination rate of P. pratensis seeds were 0. L. sagitta extracts inhibited the growth of M. sativa seedlings and did not inhibit its seed germination. A total of 904 compounds were identified with UHPLC-MS/MS, among which 31, 64, 81 and 66 metabolites displayed different accumulation patterns in the four comparison groups (R.EAE vs. R.BE, R.EAE vs. R.AE, SL.EAE vs. SL.BE, SL.EAE vs. SL.AE), respectively. In particular, 9 compounds were found to be common up-regulated differential metabolites in the four comparison groups and were enriched in EAE. Additionally, N,N-dimethylaniline, Caffeic acid, 4-Hydroxybenzoic acid, 4-Hydroxybenzaldehyde and cis-9-Octadecenoic acid as potential allelochemicals in L. sagitta. The results of this study support efforts at finding alternative control plants for the restoration of poisonous grass-type degraded grasslands.

ABSTRACT

Resource partitioning may allow species coexistence. Sand dunes in the typical steppe of Alxa Desert Inner Mongolia, China, consisting of desert, shrub, and grass habitats, provide an appropriate system for studies of spatial niche partitioning among small mammals. In this study, the spatial niche characteristics of four rodents, Orientallactaga sibirica, Meriones meridianus, Dipus sagitta, and Phodopus roborovskii, and their responses to environmental changes in the Alxa Desert were studied from 2017 to 2021. Using the capture-mark-recapture method, we tested if desert rodents with different biological characteristics and life history strategies under heterogeneous environmental conditions allocate resources in spatial niches to achieve sympatric coexistence. We investigated the influence of environmental factors on the spatial niche breadth of rodents using random forest and redundancy analyses. We observed that the spatial niche overlap between O. sibirica and other rodents is extremely low (overlap index ≤ 0.14). P. roborovskii had the smallest spatial niche breadth. Spatial niche overlap was observed in two distinct species pairs, M. meridianus and D. sagitta, and P. roborovskii and D. sagitta. The Pielou evenness index of rodent communities is closely related to the spatial distribution of rodents, and the concealment of habitats is a key factor affecting the spatial occupation of rodents.

ABSTRACT

Dipus sagitta is a major rodent found in arid environments and desert areas. They feed on plant seeds, young branches and some small insects, and have hibernating habits. Peak Dipus sagitta numbers impact the construction of the plant community in the environment, but also have a human impact as these rodents carry a variety of parasitic fleas capable of spreading serious diseases to humans. Based on 216 present distribution records of Dipus sagitta and seven environmental variables, this article simulates the potential distribution of Dipus sagitta during the Last Glacial Maximum, the mid-Holocene, the present and the future (2070s, RCP4.5, RCP8.5). This study also analyzes the geographic changes of the population distribution and evaluates the importance of climate factors by integrating contribution rate, replacement importance value and the jackknife test using the MaxEnt model. In this study, we opted to assess the predictive capabilities of our model using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and partial receiver operating characteristic (pROC) metrics. The findings indicate that the AUC value exceeds 0.9 and the AUC ratio is greater than 1, indicating superior predictive performance by the model. The results showed that the main climatic factors affecting the distribution of the three-toed jerboa were precipitation in the coldest quarter, temperature seasonality (standard deviation), and mean annual temperature. Under the two warming scenarios of the mid-Holocene and the future, there were differences in the changes in the distribution area of the three-toed jerboa. During the mid-Holocene, the suitable distribution area of the three-toed jerboa expanded, with a 93.91% increase in the rate of change compared to the Last Glacial Maximum. The size of the three-toed jerboa's habitat decreases under both future climate scenarios. Compared to the current period, under the RCP4.5 emission scenario, the change rate is -2.96%, and under the RCP8.5 emission scenario, the change rate is -7.41%. This indicates a trend of contraction in the south and expansion in the north. It is important to assess changes in the geographic population of Dipus sagitta due to climate change to formulate population control strategies of these harmful rodents and to prevent and control the long-distance transmission of zoonotic diseases.

PURPOSE: The width of the Linea alba, which is often gauged by inter-rectus distance, is a key risk factor for incisional hernia and recurrence. Previous studies provided limited descriptions with no consideration for width, location variability, or curvature. We aimed to offer a comprehensive 3D anatomical analysis of the Linea alba, emphasizing its variations across diverse demographics. METHODS: Using open source software, 2D sagittal plane and 3D reconstructions were performed on 117 patients' CT scans. Linea alba length, curvature assessed by the sagitta (the longest perpendicular segment between xipho-pubic line and the Linea alba), and continuous width along the height were measured. RESULTS: The Linea alba had a rhombus shape, with a maximum width at the umbilicus of 4.4 ± 1.9 cm and a larger width above the umbilicus than below. Its length was 37.5 ± 3.6 cm, which increased with body mass index (BMI) (p < 0.001), and was shorter in women (p < 0.001). The sagitta was 2.6 ± 2.2 cm, three times higher in the obese group (p < 0.001), majorated with age (p = 0.009), but was independent of gender (p = 0.212). Linea alba width increased with both age and BMI (p < 0.001-p = 0.002), being notably wider in women halfway between the umbilicus and pubis (p = 0.007). CONCLUSION: This study provides an exhaustive 3D description of Linea alba's anatomical variability, presenting new considerations for curvature. This method provides a patient-specific anatomy description of the Linea alba. Further studies are needed to determine whether 3D reconstruction correlates with pathologies, such as hernias and diastasis recti.

ABSTRACT

Maldonado Bay is situated on the northeastern shore of the River Plate estuary. Some hydrological and biological characteristics of the area were investigated during a complete year. The survey encompassed the characterization and circulation of main water masses in the bay, water quality, zooplankton composition and dynamics, and settlement and growth of the mussel Mytilus. The sample strategy was designed to cope with the high spatial and temporal variability of the estuary.

ABSTRACT

Ligularia virgaurea and Ligularia sagitta are two species of poisonous plants with strong invasiveness in natural grasslands in China that have caused considerable harm to animal husbandry and the ecological environment. However, little is known about their suitable habitats and the key environmental factors affecting their distribution. Although some studies have reported the distributions of poisonous plants on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) and predicted their potential distributions at local scales in some regions under climate change, there have been few studies on the widespread distributions of L. virgaurea and L. sagitta. In this study, we recorded 276 and 118 occurrence points of L. virgaurea and L. sagitta on the QTP using GPS, and then used the MaxEnt model to predict the distribution of suitable habitats. Results showed that (1) under current climate conditions, L. virgaurea and L. sagitta are mainly distributed in southern Gansu, eastern Qinghai, northwestern Sichuan, eastern Tibet, and southwestern Yunnan, accounting for approximately 34.9% and 39.8% of the total area of the QTP, respectively; (2) the main environmental variables affecting the distribution of suitable habitats for L. virgaurea and L. sagitta are the Human Footprint Index (52.8%, 42.2%), elevation (11%, 4.4%), soil total nitrogen (18.9%, 4.2%), and precipitation seasonality (5.1%, 7.3%); and (3) in the future, in the 2050s and 2070s, the area of habitat of intermediate suitability for L. virgaurea will spread considerably in northwest Sichuan, while that of high suitability for L. sagitta will spread to eastern Tibet and western Sichuan.

ABSTRACT

The northern three-toed jerboa Dipus sagitta had long been considered to be a single polytypic species. High genetic diversity of D. sagitta was earlier revealed on the basis of several mitochondrial and nuclear genes, and several separate species were hypothesized to occur within the taxon. However, the relationships between phylogenetic lineages have not been established because of the small sample size of nuclear genes. In the present work, a far larger set of nuclear DNA loci was used, and thus, a higher resolution of the phylogenetic tree was achieved for ten D. sagitta forms. The structure revealed for the species mainly confirmed the topology and relationships of the mtDNA lineages. Yet the mitochondrial and nuclear phylogenies were not completely consistent. Some of the D. sagitta genetic lineages were therefore assumed to be a product of reticular evolutionary processes. The taxon was concluded to be the diverse species complex D. sagitta sensu lato, in which long-diverged lineages are not always reproductively isolated.

ABSTRACT

Large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea) is a coastal-dwelling soniferous, commercially important fish species that is sensitive to sound. An understanding of how ocean acidification might affect its auditory system is therefore important for its long-term viability and management as a fisheries resource. We tested the effects of ocean acidification with four CO2 treatments (440 ppm (control), 1000 ppm, 1800 ppm, and 3000 ppm) on the inner ear system of this species. After exposure to acidified water for 50 d, the impacts on the perimeter and mass of the sagitta, asteriscus, and lapillus otoliths were determined. In the acidified water treatments, the shape of sagittal otoliths became more irregular, and the surface became rougher. Similar sound frequency ranges triggered startle responses of fish in all treatments. In the highest CO2 treatment (3000 ppm CO2), significant asymmetry of the left and right lapillus perimeter and weight was apparent. Moreover, in the higher CO2 treatments (1800 ppm and 3000 ppm CO2), the fish were unable to maintain a balanced dorsal-up posture and tilted to one side. This result suggested that the balance functions of the inner ear might be affected by ocean acidification, which may threaten large yellow croaker individuals and populations. The molecular response to acidification was analyzed by RNA-Seq. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between right and left sensory epithelia of the utricle in each CO2 treatment group were identified. In higher CO2 concentration groups, nervous system function and regulation of bone mineralization pathways were enriched with DEGs. The comparative transcriptome analyses provide valuable molecular information about how the inner ear system responds to an acidified environment.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To apply multiple mandibular anatomical landmark points to establish the mandibular median sagittal plane to find and establish the ideal median sagittal plane of the mandible that is suitable for clinical diagnosis and treatment.Methods:The maxillofacial spiral CT data of 30 normal maxillofacial patients in the Western Theater General Hospital were collected, and the 3D cranial model was reconstructed by using Mimics Research 21.0 software to select different anatomical landmarks to establish multiple mandibular MSPs, and with the whole cranial MSP as a reference, the different MSPs were respectively used as the mirror planes to establish a mirror model. The overlap of the original model and the mirror model were compared qualitatively and quantitatively by the overlap three-dimensional color illustration of 3-Matic software and Friedman′s test, respectively, to evaluate the application effect of different planes as mandibular MSPs.Results:There was a statistically significant degree of overlap between the mandibular mirror model and the original model with the whole head MSP and the different mandibular MSPs as mirror planes, respectively (χ 2=12.34, P<0.05). The mirror model of plane Mf-Go-Sim had the smallest overlap with the original model 0.07 (0.04, 0.18) mm; plane N-ANS-PNS was the second smallest 0.14 (0.09, 0.58) mm; the difference in overlap of plane ANS-SBWG-Mp 0.12 (0.04, 0.40) mm; the difference in overlap of plane Me-B-Sim 0.19 (0.09, 0.44) mm; the difference in overlap of plane Po-B-Go 0.18 (0.06, 0.45) mm. Conclusions:Whole-head MSP cannot completely replace mandibular MSP; plane Mf-Go-Sim can be the ideal MSP for the mandible in clinical applications.

ABSTRACT

Two new eremophilane-type sesquiterpenoids, sagittacins F and G (1 and 2), together with one known isomer of sagittacin F (3) were isolated from the leaves and stems of Ligularia sagitta. Their structures were elucidated by interpretation of spectroscopic data and the absolute configurations of 1 and 3 were determined by X-ray spectroscopy. Compound 1 belongs to a rare class of eremophilane-type sesquiterpenoid featuring an α-oriented hydroxy group at C-1. A nitric oxide (NO) production inhibitory assay was applied to evaluate their anti-inflammatory activities by using LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells. Compounds 2 and 3 exhibited modest NO production inhibitions with IC50 values of 45.15±2.72 and 49.83±2.34 µM, respectively.

ABSTRACT

Otolith biomineralization results from biochemical processes regulated by the interaction of internal (physiological) and external (environmental) factors which lead to morphological and ultrastructural variability at intra- and interspecific levels. The aim of this study was to conduct a multi-scale analysis of the sagittal otoliths of the Merlucius merlucius (European hake) from the western Adriatic Sea in order to correlate otolith features with fish ontogeny and sex. We show that otoliths of sexually undifferentiated (non-sexed) individuals having a fish body total length (TL) less than 15 cm had faster growth in length, width, area, perimeter, volume and weight and a higher amount of organic matrix compared with otoliths of sexually differentiated individuals (females and males) having a fish size range of 15-50 cm. Most importantly, with increasing fish TL, female saccular otoliths contained a higher number of protuberances and rougher surface compared with male specimens, which showed more uniform mean curvature density. The differences between females and males discovered in this study could be associated with fish hearing adaptation to reproductive behavioural strategies during the spawning season. The outcomes of this research provide insights on how size and sex-related variations in otolith features may be affected by fish ecological and behavioural patterns.

ABSTRACT

Based on morphological and molecular analysis of Astronotus species, a new species is described from the Orinoco River and Gulf of Paria basins in Venezuela and Colombia. Morphologically, it differs from Astronotuscrassipinnis and Astronotusocellatus in pre-orbital depth, caudal peduncle depth, head width, and caudal peduncle length, with significant differences in average percentage values. Osteologically, it differs from the two described species by lacking a hypurapophysis on the parahypural bone (hypural complex) and having two or three supraneural bones. Another characteristic that helps diagnose the new species is the morphology of the sagitta otolith, which is oval with crenulated dorsal and ventral margins and a rounded posterior edge. Genetically, the new species is distinct from all the other lineages previously proposed for the genus, delimited by five single locus species delimitation methods, and also has unique diagnostic nucleotides. Phylogenetic analyses support the monophyly of the new species as well as all other species/lineages. Astronotus species have considerable genetic, anatomical, and sagitta otolith shape differences, but have few significant traditional morphometric and meristic differences, because there is high variability in counts of spines, soft dorsal-fin rays, and lateral-line scales. It is clear that this new species is genetically and anatomically differentiated from all other species within the genus, and deserves recognition as a new valid species.

Goatfishes (Teleostei, Mullidae) are a group of mainly coastal fishes that form an important part of food chains, and also have commercial value. In the marine waters of Iran, they are found in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea (Gulf of Oman). This study evaluated whether otolith morphology can be used to distinguish of species and genera, and also to interpret whether otoliths of the same species differ among two studied marine systems. To do this objective, the otolith morphology of ten species belonging to three genera were analyzed by SEM photography and shape analysis. Among the morphometric variables, relative rostrum length was found to be the most important otolith variable for discriminating Mulloidichthys (RRL = 32.29 ± 0.59) and Parupeneus (RRL = 37.39 ± 1.10), while rectangularity (REx) was the most important shape index for discriminating Mulloidichthys (REx = 0.99 ± 1.94) from Parupeneus (REx = 0.77 ± 1.21). By considering otolith morphology, Upeneus showed a better separation than the two other genera. The otoliths of Upeneus are diagnosed by short dorsal length (RDL = 69.35 ± 1.51), higher rostrum height (RRH = 53.63 ± 1.99), short rostrum (RRL = 31.12 ± 1.99), and antirostrum lengths (RanL = 12.38 ± 1.51). The most diverged phenotype within the genus Parupeneus was found for the otoliths of P. rubescens, and the most diverged phenotype within the genus Upeneus was found for the otoliths of U. sundaicus. The otoliths of the same species did not demonstrate large variation between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. This study provides additional morphological evidence for the separation of goatfishes at the species and genus levels. We also underline that the slight observed differences between the otoliths of two marine systems are mainly caused by the ecological differences known between these two main systems.

PURPOSE: To propose alternative formulas for the sagitta calculation of ophthalmic lenses. METHODS: Equation factoring. RESULTS: The conventional sagitta formula is algebraically inconsistent when applied to curves with direction-oriented radii. It is possible to correct this problem by factoring it. CONCLUSIONS: The conventional sagitta formula can and should be replaced by unambiguous equations.

ABSTRACT

The relationships between fish size and sagitta otolith measurements were calculated for the first time for 15 species belonging to six families from the northern Brazilian coast. A total of 220 fish were sampled from the bycatch landed by the bottom-trawl industrial shrimp-fishing fleet between August and September 2016. All species had strong relationships between otolith measurements and fish total length with the coefficient of determination (r 2) ranging between 0.71 and 0.99. The variable most strongly related to fish total length was found to be the sagittal otolith length (OL) with 98% of the variability. These relationships are a useful tool to estimate length and mass of preyed fish from otoliths found in stomach contents of marine predators. (AU)

ABSTRACT

Movements of coastal fish species between estuarine systems (rearing grounds) and adjacent platforms (spawning grounds) are complex and can be influenced by multiple biotic and abiotic factors associated with the life cycle of each species. Understanding fish movement patterns between these habitats is crucial for sustainable management of these resources. We aimed to identify movement patterns of the whitemouth croaker Micropogonias furnieri, an important fishery resource along the southeastern Brazilian coast, through characterization of elemental concentration profiles in otoliths. Signal intensity ratios of Sr86:Ca43 and Ba138:Ca43, measured by a Laser ablation inductively coupled to a plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS), were analysed. Juveniles and adults fish from three semi-enclosed systems (two bays and one coastal lagoon) and adults from nine adjacent coastal areas were examined. Three main behavioural patterns were identified: 1) Marine Migrant, with a unique and definitive movement from the estuarine area towards the adjacent platform when adult; 2) Estuarine Visitor, with movements from the estuarine area towards the adjacent platform when adult but also performing excursions back to the estuarine areas and back again to the adjacent platform; and 3) Nearshore Resident, with occurrence in the adjacent coastal areas that are influenced by estuarine systems. Estuarine areas with large sea connections (e.g., bays) favour more frequent fish entrances and exits compared with coastal lagoons that have a narrow sea connection. The high eurioic condition and capacity related to adapting to different environmental conditions were detected in this study for M. furnieri, a likely strategy to maintain variation in life histories and successfully adapt to coastal marine systems.

ABSTRACT

In this study, genetic diversity and population genetic structure of Sagitta enflata in the northern South China Sea were investigated by 623 bp fragment of mtDNA COI gene sequence. A total of 146 individuals were collected from nine stations and 92 different haplotypes were obtained. 485 variable sites (210 were parsimony informative and 275 were singleton variable sites), and no insertion or deletion was found. An analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) and conventional population statistics (F ST) revealed a low level of genetic differentiation among nine populations (F ST = 0.14794, p < .05), indicating no geographical patterning among nine populations. The present results were able to provide a reference for the phylogenetic relationships and assessment of the genetic structure of S. enflata in the northern South China Sea.

The bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix (Linnaeus, 1766), was used as a species-specific model to study morphometric relationships between otolith size and relative growth variables. Length-weight relationships between Otolith (Length-OL, Height-OH, and Weight-OW) and fish measurements (Total Length-TL and Total Weight-TW) were determined for fishes captured monthly during the year 2015 off the southeastern coast of Brazil. The ANCOVA and Kruskal-Wallis analysis did not indicate significant differences in the relative growth constants between sexes and length frequency distributions (p > 0.05). The condition factor also did not present significant differences between sexes, and right and left otolith measurements (p > 0.05). A total of 398 specimens were sampled: TL = 43.6-67.0 cm, TW = 365-2400 g, OL = 9.65-15.25 mm, OH = 3.65 - 5.45 mm and OW = 0.03-0.11 g. The LWR for grouped sexes was TW = 0.050TL2.55 and otoliths OW = 6.17E-05OL2.59. The best adjustments were TL vs OL (r2 = 0.90); OL vs OW (r2 = 0.90); TW vs OW (r2 = 0.81); and TW vs OL (r2 = 0.80). These results showed that such relationships are helpful tools for predicting the fish size and weight from otoliths, which may be used in food habits and paleontology studies, and other fisheries management applications.(AU)


A anchova, Pomatomus saltatrix (Linnaeus, 1766), foi usada como modelo espécie-específico de relações morfométricas de otólitos e variáveis de crescimento relativo. As relações peso-comprimento entre otólito (comprimento-CO, altura-AO e peso-PO) e tamanho do peixe (comprimento total-CT e peso total-PT) foram determinadas para indivíduos capturados mensalmente durante o ano de 2015 na costa sudeste do Brasil. As análises de ANCOVA e Kruskal-Wallis não indicaram diferenças significativas para as constantes de crescimento relativo entre os sexos e distribuições de frequência de comprimento (p> 0,05). O fator de condição também não apresentou diferenças significativas entre os sexos, e medidas do otólito direito e esquerdo (p > 0,05). Um total de 398 espécimes foram amostrados: CT = 43,6-67,0 cm e PT = 365-2400 g. A RPC para peixes foi PT = 0.050CT2,55 e para os seus otólitos foi PO = 6.17E-05CO2,59, CO = 9.65-15.25 mm, AO = 3.65 - 5.45 mm and PO = 0.03-0.11 g. Os melhores ajustes foram observados para CT vs CO (r2 = 0,90); CO vs PO (r2 = 0,90); PT vs PO (r2= 0,81) e PT vs CO (r2 = 0,80). Os resultados mostraram que essas relações são ferramentas úteis na geração de estimativas de tamanho e peso dos peixes a partir dos otólitos, permitindo a sua aplicação em estudos em outras áreas, incluindo hábitos alimentares, paleontologia e manejo da pesca.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Reproductive isolation, the key process to prevent interspecific hybridization and keep the completeness and independence of species, is crucial to the formation and maintenance of biodiversity. The forming steps, methods and intensities of reproductive isolation between different species are not completely the same. Literatures on reproductive isolation between species provide valuable evidence for speciation and its maintenance. Flowering phenology, flowering-visiting insects, and pollen-stigma compatibility were observed for Ligularia virgaurea and L. sagitta, two species of weeds sympatrically distributed in eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The characteristics of reproductive isolation mechanism of both species and its role in reproductive isolation were also studied. The results showed that the flowering period of L. virgaurea was 20 d earlier than that of L. sagitta. Although the full-blooming period separated, there was a roughly 10 d overlap between the two species. Meanwhile, the pollens and stigmas of the two species were both viability in the overlapped 10 d. L. virgaurea and L. sagitta shared the same types of pollinating insects, which was a generalized pollination type. Besides, the flower-visiting behavior towards the two species from the pollinators was similar, along with the interleaved access between the two species. There was no complete time isolation and no complete pollinator isolation between the two species, but the stigma had poor compatibility towards heterogenic pollen. The germination of pollen on stigma and growth of the pollen tube was hampered. Furthermore, the rejection of pollen-stigma was likely to be an important prezygotic reproductive isolation between L. virgaurea and L. sagitta, thus avoiding the natural hybridization and maintaining the diversity and genetic stability of the two species.

ABSTRACT

The Weberian apparatus of otophysan fishes confers acute hearing that is hypothesized to allow these fishes to assess the environment and to find food resources. The otophysan family Serrasalmidae (piranhas and pacus) includes species known to feed on falling fruits and seeds (frugivore/granivores) that splash in rivers, herbivorous species associated with torrents and rapids (rheophiles), and carnivores that feed aggressively within shoals. Relevant sound stimuli may vary among these ecological groups and hearing may be tuned to different cues among species. In this context, we examined size variation of the Weberian ossicles, swim bladder chambers, and otoliths of 20 serrasalmid species from three broad feeding ecologies: frugivore/granivores, rheophiles, and carnivores. We performed 3D-reconstructions of high resolution tomographic data (µCT) from 54 museum specimens to estimate the size of these elements. We then tested for an ecology effect on covariation of auditory structure size and body size and accounted for phylogeny with phylogenetic generalized least squares analyses. Among ecological groups, we observed differences in relative sizes of otoliths associated with sound pressure and particle motion detection, and variation in Weberian ossicle size that may impact sound transmission. Rheophiles, which live in noisy environments, possess the strongest modifications of these structures.
