ABSTRACT

The aim of this investigation is to explore the relationship between Optimist sailing performance with boat steadiness as well as the steadiness of cyclic variables related to sailors' technique, in the upwind leg of a regatta. Thirty-two sailors from the optimist class (16 bottom level and 16 top level) performed a regatta in a semi-immersive simulator which measures the instantaneous velocity, heading, boom, heel, and rudder angle and hiking effort. It was calculated the mean values as well as the short-term steadiness and long-term steadiness throughout the test. Top level and bottom level sailors were compared and the correlation between these variables and mean velocity were analysed. Significant differences were found between groups on mean values, STS values and LTS values as well as significant correlations ranging r values between 0.385 and 0.768. If the steadiness of sailing variables is considered, they appear as determinants of performance in Optimist class while this is not observed when analysing mean values.

ABSTRACT

Study Objectives: The study explores how sleep, sleep-related practices, and behaviors, in addition to various demographic and occupational characteristics, are related to overall mood of US Navy sailors when they are underway. Methods: Longitudinal assessment of US Navy sailors performing their underway duties (N = 873, 79.2% males, median age 25 years). Participants completed standardized questionnaires, wore wrist-worn actigraphs, and completed daily activity logs. Results: Sailors who reported worse profile of mood states (POMS) total mood disturbance scores had shorter sleep duration, worse sleep quality, and more episodes of split sleep. The group with worse mood also reported more symptoms of excessive daytime sleepiness as well as more symptoms of insomnia. In addition to sleep results, sailors with worse mood also tended to be younger, more likely to use nicotine and tobacco products, and less likely to have an exercise routine when compared to sailors with better POMS scores. Finally, the group with worse POMS scores included more enlisted personnel, tended to work more hours per day, and were more likely to stand watch-especially on rotating watch schedules. Conclusions: The results found significant associations between the sleep practices and mood of sailors aboard US Navy ships. Numerous other demographic and occupational factors were also strongly associated with mood. ABSTRACT

This analysis has two interlinked goals. First, drawing on Lee Edelman, Dudley Andrew and Laura Mulvey, it theorizes the male homosexual optique, a mode of address that is predicated on the relationship between a film, its context of reception and its spectator, and which undermines the heterosexual exigencies of classical narrative style to implicitly address a gay male viewer. Second, it illustrates how the putatively heterosexual romance of Curtis Harrington's Night Tide (1961) appeals to gay male spectators through two mechanisms that underpin the optique, specifically the homosexual gaze and characterization. Key to each of these aims is how the non-normative heterosexual male body functions as a site of gay male objectification and identification. This article ultimately argues that Harrington's film enables us to envisage a queer cinema that is not predicated on fictions of homosexual desire but nevertheless provides a framework for deepening our understanding of what queer spectatorship (and the male homosexual gaze in particular) may involve.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Domestic workers, flight crews, and sailors are three vulnerable population subgroups who were required to travel due to occupational demand in Hong Kong during the COVID-19 pandemic. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the social networks among three vulnerable population subgroups and capture temporal changes in their probability of being exposed to SARS-CoV-2 via mobility. METHODS: We included 652 COVID-19 cases and utilized Exponential Random Graph Models to build six social networks: one for the cross-sectional cohort, and five for the temporal wave cohorts, respectively. Vertices were the three vulnerable population subgroups. Edges were shared scenarios where vertices were exposed to SARS-CoV-2. RESULTS: The probability of being exposed to a COVID-19 case in Hong Kong among the three vulnerable population subgroups increased from 3.38% in early 2020 to 5.78% in early 2022. While domestic workers were less mobile intercontinentally compared to flight crews and sailors, domestic workers were 1.81-times in general more likely to be exposed to SARS-CoV-2. CONCLUSIONS: Vulnerable populations with similar ages and occupations, especially younger domestic workers and flight crew members, were more likely to be exposed to SARS-CoV-2. Social network analysis can be used to provide critical information on the health risks of infectious diseases to vulnerable populations.

ABSTRACT

Here, a new superfamily of IS630-Tc1-mariner (ITm) DNA transposons, termed Sailor, is identified, that is characterized by a DD82E catalytic domain and is distinct from all previously known superfamilies of the ITm group. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that Sailor forms a monophyletic clade with a more intimate link to the clades of Tc1/mariner and DD34E/Gambol. Sailor was detected in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes and invaded a total of 256 species across six kingdoms. Sailor is present in nine species of bacteria, two species of plantae, four species of protozoa, 23 species of Chromista, 12 species of Fungi and 206 species of animals. Moreover, Sailor is extensively distributed in invertebrates (a total of 206 species from six phyla) but is absent in vertebrates. Sailor transposons are 1.38-6.98 kb in total length and encoded transposases of ~676 aa flanked by TIRs with lengths between 18, 1362 and 4 bp (TATA) target-site duplications. Furthermore, our analysis provided strong evidence of Sailor transmissions from prokaryotes to eukaryotes and internal transmissions in both. These data update the classification of the ITm group and will contribute to the understanding of the evolution of ITm transposons and that of their hosts.

We present a genome assembly from an individual male Cantharis rustica (a soldier beetle; Arthropoda; Insecta; Coleoptera; Cantharidae). The genome sequence is 446 megabases in span. The majority (99.71%) of the assembly is scaffolded into 7 chromosomal pseudomolecules, with the X sex chromosome assembled.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this study was to identify skin disorders encountered in a population of sport sailors. Unlike merchant mariners and fishermen, there is sparse literature on this maritime population. Secondary objectives were to uncover on-board conditions that may contribute to dermatological problems in this population. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study during the 2012 AG2R transatlantic race. Sixteen two-man crews participated in this race, all using the same model of sailboat (Bénéteau Figaro 2). Clinical examinations were conducted, photographs taken, and questionnaires containing 34 questions were handed out before departure and on arrival, 22 to 24 days later. RESULTS: Twenty-eight of 32 skippers (88%) participated in departure data collection, and 18 (56%) completed data collection on arrival. The average age of sailors was 34 years (SD = 8). Compared with skin diseases documented on departure, there was an increased amount of folliculitis on the buttocks, fungal infections, and hyperkeratosis of the hands on arrival. Furthermore, several new skin problems were found postrace: skin scaling, skin erosions on the buttocks, dyshidrosis, thermal burns, and sunburns. The use of protective gear and sunscreen was common, but on-board hygiene was poor with infrequent bathing and clothing changes. CONCLUSIONS: Skin conditions are nearly universal in this maritime population. Further assessments are needed to know if long-term use of protective gear; improved hygiene; use of barrier creams; and proper on-board care of fungal infections, wounds, and burns could reduce the number and severity of skin problems encountered in sport sailors.

ABSTRACT

Despite awareness of noise aboard vessels at sea, few studies have reported measured noise levels aboard ships. This study aimed to describe the noise levels aboard vessels in the Royal Norwegian Navy (RNoN), and to assess the noise exposure of personnel aboard RNoN vessels. In 2012/2013 noise measurements were conducted aboard 14 RNoN vessels from four different vessel classes (frigates, coastal corvettes, mine vessels, and coast guard vessels) which were included in this study. Mean and median A-weighted noise levels (L p,A) in decibel (dB(A)) were calculated for different locations in each vessel class. The noise exposure of RNoN personnel was assessed by dosimeter measurements, and with a task-based (TB) strategy. The TB strategy used means of area measured noise levels in locations and the personnel's mean reported time spent in the respective locations to estimate the exposure. Area measurements of noise during sailing with typical operating modes, showed that for all vessel classes the noise levels were high in engine rooms with median L p,A ranging from 86.4 to 105.3 dB(A). In all the other locations the vessel class with the highest noise levels (coastal corvettes) had a median L p,A ranging from 71.7 to 95.0 dB(A), while the vessel class with the lowest noise levels (coast guard vessels) had a median L p,A ranging from 41.5 to 57.8 dB(A). For all vessel classes the engineers and electricians had amongst the highest 24-hour noise exposure (L p,A,24h), both before and after adjusting for estimated use of hearing protective devices (L p,A,24h > 67.3 dB(A)). The vessel class with the highest personnel exposure levels (coastal corvettes) had L p,A,24h ranging from 76.6 to 79.3 dB(A). The vessel class with the lowest personnel exposure levels (coast guard vessels) had an L p,A,24h ranging from 47.4 to 67.3 dB(A). In general, the dosimeter measurements gave higher exposure levels than those estimated with the TB strategy. All vessel classes, except the coast guard vessels, had noise levels exceeding the RNoN standard's recommended maximum noise levels. The area measured noise levels and the personnel's exposure estimates indicate that navy personnel aboard RNoN vessels are at risk of acquiring adverse health effects from exposure to noise, and that a program to reduce the noise levels should be implemented.

ObjectiveTo evaluate effect intervened by the linden relaxation technique (LRT) in the group of long-term naval shipmen's anxiety on surface ship.MethodsSelected naval surface ship unit 1402 shipmen serve as study subjects.140 anxiety shipmen (70 ≥ SAS score ≥ 50) screen out with Zung'self-rating anxiety scale (SAS).The person's group with anxiety mood,but did not meet the diagnostic criteria for anxiety disorders of DSM-Ⅳ.Anxiety shipmen were random divided into the linden relaxation technique group ( n =70) and No-intervention control group ( n =70).In the LRT intervention group:LRT exercises time course was 1 time/ day,and 30 min/time to persist 10 days.The control group without relaxation training.Before and after interventions,anxiety level separately were evaluated with SAS.ResultsBefore intervention,there were not statistically significant between intervention group and control group in SAS anxiety scores,respectively ( ( 54.00 ± 4.43 ) vs (53.91 ± 4.88 )).After intervention,there were statistically significant between intervention group and control group anxiety scores,respectively was ( (40.57 ± 8.98 ) vs ( 53.13 ± 5.51 ) ).The difference before and after intervention,anxiety scoring in intervention group (13.43 ± 7.82 ) was lower than that of the control group (0.79 ± 3.41 ).After following 2 months,SAS scores in the intervention group was more lower (36.76 ± 8.57 ) than the right finish intervention,there was significant different; but there was not significant different belong to the control group (52.34 ± 5.50).ConclusionLinden relaxation technique improves anxiety mood in the naval servicemen.

ABSTRACT

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi investigar possíveis transformações no estilo de vida de velejadores. Caracteriza-se como uma pesquisa qualitativa, do tipo descritiva, de campo. Os participantes foram 19 velejadores do Iate Clube da Paraíba, com idade entre 19 e 64 anos, e no mínimo 5 anos de prática. Foi empregado um questionário sociodemográfico e um roteiro de entrevista semi-estruturada. A análise dos dados foi realizada por meio do programa AQUAD 6 para indicar a frequência das palavras, categorizadas a partir da análise de conteúdo e organizadas em diagramas. Os resultados apontaram que a maior parte dos velejadores são do sexo masculino e tem ensino superior completo. Observou-se que a prática da vela contribuiu para aquisição de hábitos saudáveis, como a diminuição de vícios e dependência química; além disso, as sensações advindas da ação de velejar foram classificadas em duas categorias: as sensações positivas referente as situações favoráveis; e as sensações negativas enfrentadas nas condições de perigo e ameças. Ambas as condições acarretam melhoria ao estilo de vida ocasionados pelas mudanças nos aspectos emocionais, tanto positivas quanto negativas, decorrentes das situações e desafios encontrados no mar.


The aim of this study was to investigate possible changes in lifestyle of sailors. It is characterized as a qualitative and descriptive research. Participants were 19 sailors from the Iacht Club of Paraiba, aged 19 to 64 years, and at least five years of practice. It used a socio-demographic questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. Data analysis was performed using the program Aquadis 6 to indicate the frequency of words based on content analysis and organized into maps. The results showed that most of sailors are male and had completed higher education. It was observed that the practice of sailing contributed to acquisition of healthy habits, such as reducing dependence on drugs. Moreover, the feelings arising from the action of sailing were classified into two categories: positive feelings regarding situations and conditions favorable and negative feelings faced dangers and threats. Both conditions lead to improved life caused by changes in the emotional aspects, both positive and negative, arising from the situations and challenges arising from the sea.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The object of this study was to help the clinicians understand the characteristics of the sailors who were admitted to the psychiatric ward through elucidating the transition in the psychiatric aspect of them. METHODS: The results obtained from psychiatric records of 98 sailors who were admitted to department of psychiatry in a general hospital, from March 1, 1985 to Feb. 28, 1994 were compared with the results obtained from 34 sailor inpatients in the same hospital from March 1, 1982 to Feb. 28, 1985. RESULTS: 1) The number of sailor inpatients showed declining tendency and the age of them showed increasing tendency. 2) The number of patients of somatoform disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and organic mental disorder was increased. The number of patients of schizophrenia and mood disorder was decreased. 3) The proportion of inpatients from overseas fishing ship was increased markedly. We must ave a countplan and careful consideration f3r them. 4) We could infer that the groups of low education, crew, overseas fishing ship and below S year of employment duration had high admitted patient occurrence rate. The proportion of psychosis in the groups that were primitive school graduated and 1-5 year of employment duration was high relatively to neurosis(statistically not significant). 5) According to psychological test, the majority of sailor inpatients had constricted thought content, emphasis of responsibility for the family, submissive attitude to an authoritive figure and paranoid tendency. The MMFI profile of neurotic patients showed the tendency of finking bad.
