ABSTRACT

The maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) is the largest South American canid. In Brazil, as in other countries, it is considered an endangered species. Habitat loss, landscape changes, hunting, and roadkill are the main threats to this species. In addition, invasive diseases of domestic animals are considered to be an emerging threat to the maned wolf, where parasitic diseases are relevant. Sarcoptic mange is a skin disease caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. This disease is currently almost globally distributed, with a remarkable host diversity. In Brazil, reports of sarcoptic mange in wildlife include several species, both wild and captive. However, the impact of this disease on wildlife is unknown. At the time of writing, there is only one published report of sarcoptic mange in maned wolves. This study sheds light on the occurrence of sarcoptic mange in free-ranging maned wolves in their natural range. A total of 52 cases (suspected and confirmed) of sarcoptic mange were identified through social media review, camera trapping, chemical immobilization and sample collection. These cases were distributed in southeastern Brazil, in the states of São Paulo (n = 34), Minas Gerais (n = 17), and Rio de Janeiro (n = 1), demonstrating a rapid and widespread spread of this disease, although it still only occurs in part of the species' range. We expect that these results will help to subsidize future actions relevant to the control of this emerging disease.

ANTECEDENTES Y OBJETIVO La escabiosis tiene una prevalencia estimada en 200 millones de personas alrededor del mundo. Su tratamiento consiste en alternativas de uso tópico y administración oral. Sin embargo, la prevención de contagios se dificulta cuando la escabiosis es endémica, ya que las condiciones de higiene y de hacinamiento favorecen la reinfección incluso cuando los contactos familiares han sido tratados previamente. Considerando lo anterior, ha cobrado relevancia como estrategia de control de la escabiosis, la administración masiva de medicamentos, que consiste en la administración del agente farmacológico a comunidades completas, independiente de si las personas presentan o no la enfermedad. En este contexto, el Departamento de Enfermedades Transmisibles ha solicitado el desarrollo de una síntesis de evidencia, con el objetivo de informar sobre el efecto que puede tener tratar a la comunidad versus solo a los contactos familiares. METODOLOGÍA Se formuló una estrategia de búsqueda para ser utilizada en las bases de datos MEDLINE y EMBASE a través de OVID y en Epistemonikos, Pubmed, BEIC, JBI y BVS con fecha 23 enero 2023. Se utiliza la metodología de la certeza de evidencia GRADE. Se incluyen documentos que aborden a la población general, el efecto de tratar farmacológicamente a contactos versus contactos comunitarios en Sarna/Escabiosis, outcomes de infección o reinfección. Se excluyen estudios que comparen la efectividad de medicamentos. RESULTADOS La cantidad de revisiones sistemáticas recuperadas fueron 2, de las que se obtuvieron los siguientes resultados - No se encontró evidencia que respondiera directamente a la pregunta por lo que se incluyeron estudios que evaluaban la efectividad de la Administración Masiva de Medicamentos. - No es posible establecer el efecto de tratar a los contactos comunitarios y familia sobre la prevalencia de escabiosis en comparación al tratamiento solo al grupo familiar, debido a que la certeza de la evidencia existente es muy baja. - La escasa evidencia identificada proviene de contextos endémicos de escabiosis, de comunidades pequeñas y aisladas por lo que la aplicabilidad de la evidencia a un contexto más amplio habría que evaluarla con precaución.

ANTECEDENTES Y OBJETIVO La escabiosis, popularmente conocida como sarna, es un cuadro parasitario categorizado como una enfermedad desatendida. Se estima que a nivel mundial existen más de 100 millones de personas con esta enfermedad. Suele ser más susceptible en personas inmunocomprometidas o quienes viven en condiciones de hacinamiento o poco sanitizados, ambiente propicio para el parásito. Existen distintas estrategias para el manejo de brotes por escabiosis, entre las que se encuentran medidas de prevención no farmacológicas llamadas también ambientales, que pueden servir para la prevención de la diseminación de la enfermedad y reinfección. En este contexto, el Departamento de Enfermedades Transmisibles ha solicitado el desarrollo de una síntesis de evidencia con el objetivo de conocer las medidas ambientales y su potencial efectividad en el control de brotes y prevención de infección. METODOLOGÍA Se formuló una estrategia de búsqueda para ser utilizada en las bases de datos MEDLINE y EMBASE a través de OVID y en Epistemonikos y Pubmed, con fecha 12 enero 2023. Se utiliza la metodología de da certeza de evidencia GRADE. Se incluyen documentos que contemplen efectos de medidas ambientales, Sarna/Escabiosis, y en la población general. Se excluyen documentos que aborden otras enfermedades y medidas farmacológicas. RESULTADOS La cantidad de revisiones sistemáticas recuperadas fueron 2, de las cuales se obtuvieron los siguientes resultados -La evidencia sobre medidas ambientales para el tratamiento de escabiosis no se han evaluado por sí solas, pero sí han sido consideradas como coadyuvantes de los tratamientos farmacológicos para la escabiosis. - Con moderada certeza de la evidencia, se observa que incorporar programas educativos de higiene personal, podría contribuir en disminuir la prevalencia de escabiosis en escolares. - Existe incertidumbre de la evidencia sobre el efecto de la incorporación de programas de detección temprana (screening), sobre la prevalencia de escabiosis durante periodos de 7 meses a 5 años en población rural e indígena.

ABSTRACT

Mange, a parasitic skin disease caused by various species of mites, is found in free-ranging wildlife populations and has been increasingly reported in American black bears (Ursus americanus) over the last decade in New York State (NYS), USA. Our goal was to describe the geographic, seasonal, and demographic factors associated with mange in this species in NYS. Our retrospective study used historic, opportunistic data from diagnostic necropsy records and visual sighting reports collected by the NYS Wildlife Health Program from 2009 to 2018. We used chi-square tests for independence and odds ratios to examine whether geographic location, year, season, sex, age, and reason for laboratory submission were associated with mange in bears. We used maps and seasonal analysis to investigate emerging patterns. We confirmed increased black bear mange reports in recent years. Necropsy data revealed more bears submitted to the laboratory because of mange, mainly caused by Sarcoptes scabiei; females were more likely than males to present with sarcoptic mange. We found that cases of mange in the Northern Zone were widely disseminated throughout the region, whereas cases in the Southern Zone were concentrated in two areas along the Pennsylvania border. Seasonally, mange cases showed peaks occurring in late spring to early summer and in fall. Our results were on the basis of available data; a comprehensive statewide surveillance program would be useful to better understand the apparent increase in mange and its potential impact on both the welfare of individual animals and the population of black bears in NYS. Additional research on the timing of transmission dynamics associated with females in winter dens may be helpful to wildlife managers to identify strategies to mitigate deleterious spread of the disease in black bears.

ABSTRACT

Free-ranging vicuñas (Vicugna vicugna) are handled in some areas of the Andean high plateau region following an ancestral practice known as chaku, which consists in their transient capture and shearing of their fiber for commercialization. In this study, 807 vicuñas captured during 12 chaku events that took place in 2019 in the province of Jujuy, Argentina, were examined for typical mange skin lesions. Twenty-eight of the examined vicuñas presented alopecia with erythema, exudation, hyperkeratosis, and/or bleeding scarred lesions, mostly in the chest, rear and front legs, and inguinal zone. Most of the cases (82%) appeared in Laguna Cucho at 4900 masl, where 23% of the animals presented these skin reactions. Microscopic evaluation of skin scrapings revealed the presence of a great number of 0.1- to 0.4-mm-long mites of different life cycle stages, morphologically compatible with the species Sarcoptes scabiei. This etiological agent was confirmed by PCR amplification and sequencing of a cox-1 species-specific segment. Histopathological examination of skin biopsies showed extensive infiltration of the dermis with lymphocytes, neutrophils and eosinophils, hyperplasia at different stages, epidermis degeneration, and hyperkeratosis. This is the first characterization of sarcoptic mange in free-ranging vicuñas by clinical examination, mite morphology, histopathological studies, and molecular confirmation in the region. Mange hampers the welfare of vicuñas and the economy of the local communities that organize chaku events since infested vicuñas cannot be sheared. Its long-term effects are unknown but it might affect the fitness and survival of this iconic South American camelid.

ABSTRACT

We present the first report of parasitism by Sarcoptes scabiei (Linnaeus, 1758), in a sechuran fox "Lycalopex sechurae". Sarcoptes scabiei is a mite that produces sarcoptic mange, which can lead to the death of the animal host and can cause epidemic episodes in wildlife communities. The sechuran fox was collected by the environmental police from a citizen who reported the animal. It was sent to a veterinarian specializing in wildlife, "Clinica Mansion Mascota", in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Immediate physical examination showed crusts on its skin, and samples of skin and blood were collected and analyzed. The skin samples were analyzed using a microscope at 40x magnification in the clinic. In addition, skin and blood samples were sent to a private laboratory for further analyses. Both analyses were positive for S. scabiei infection. It is the second report of S. scabiei in a new wildlife species in the Guayas province of Ecuador within less than a year. These events cause concern due the possibility of biological community transmission. Since domestic and feral animals are considered habitual spreaders of this disease, management through ethical procedures such as adoption, medical treatment and neutering campaigns, and awareness-raising projects with empathetic approach are recommended.(AU)


Apresentamos o primeiro relato de infecção por Sarcoptes scabiei (Linnaeus, 1758) em uma raposa-do-deserto-Peruana Lycalopex sechurae. Sarcoptes scabiei é um ácaro que produz sarna sarcóptica, que pode levar à morte do animal hospedeiro e causar episódios epidêmicos em comunidades de vida selvagem. A raposa-do-deserto-Peruana foi recolhida pela polícia ambiental de um cidadão que denunciou o animal. O animal foi enviado para a Clinica Mansion Mascota em Guayaquil, Equador, para ser examinado por um veterinário especializado em vida selvagem. O exame físico imediato mostrou crostas na pele, e amostras de pele e sangue foram coletadas e analisadas. As amostras de pele foram examinadas na clínica usando um microscópio com aumento de 40x. Além disso, amostras de pele e sangue foram enviadas para um laboratório privado para análises posteriores. Ambas as análises foram positivas para infecção por S. scabiei. Este é o segundo relato de S. scabiei em um novo hospedeiro selvagem na província de Guayas, no Equador, em menos de um ano. Isto indica que existe transmissão comunitária biológica. Uma vez que animais domésticos e feroses são considerados disseminadores habituais dessa doença, recomenda-se o manejo por meio de procedimentos éticos, como adoção, tratamento médico e campanhas de castração, e projetos de conscientização com abordagem empática.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Sarcoptic mange is a disease caused by an infectious parasite in the vicuñas (Vicugna vicugna) from South America. Although molecular studies have provided much information about the epidemiology of this disease, this information is still unknown in vicuñas. This study determined the prevalence and molecular characterization of Sarcoptes scabiei from vicuñas from Southern Peruvian Andes. During the 2018 shearing season, 181 vicuñas were clinically evaluated for lesions compatible with mange. Sarcoptes scabiei was detected in 35 (19.3%) vicuñas, and 50 mites from 25 vicuñas were selected for molecular analyses of the mitochondrial (cox1) and nuclear (ITS2) genetic markers. Molecular analyses of the cox1 and ITS2 sequences showed an identity of 94­99% and 99.8­100% with previous S. scabiei sequences registered in the GenBank, respectively. Sequence polymorphisms were more evident in the ITS2 than in the cox1, but only the cox1 had an association with the host. Phylogenetic analysis of S. scabiei cox1 sequences from vicuñas showed a cluster with S. scabiei cox1 sequences from canids, suggesting that the origin of S. scabiei from vicuña is associated with canid mites. This research is the first molecular analysis of S. scabiei from vicuñas. Future molecular studies will be necessary to determine the species variety, geographic segregation and host­parasite adaptation for this vicuña's mite.

ABSTRACT

Sarcoptic mange is a parasitic skin disease caused by the burrowing mite Sarcoptes scabiei that affects a diversity of mammals, including humans, worldwide. In North America, the most commonly affected wildlife includes wild canids, such as coyotes and red foxes, and more recently American black bears in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast United States. Currently, surveillance for sarcoptic mange in wildlife is syndromic, relying on detection of clinical signs and lesions, such as alopecia and crusting of skin. When possible, skin scrapes are used to identify the causative mite. While skin scrapes are a valuable diagnostic tool to identify mites, this approach has significant limitations when used for quantification of mite burden. To further investigate mite burden in cases of sarcoptic mange, 6-mm punch biopsies were collected from affected skin of red foxes (Vulpes vulpes Linnaeus [Carnivora: Canidae]), a species historically affected by sarcoptic mange, frequently with high mite burdens and severe skin disease, and validated on skin tissue from mange-affected American black bears (Ursus americanus Pallas [Carnivora: Ursidae]) and coyotes (Canis latrans Say [Carnivora: Canidae]). Biopsies were digested by incubating the tissue in potassium hydroxide (KOH) at 55°C. The greatest tissue clearance and lowest mite degradation resulted after 12 h of tissue digestion. The purpose of this manuscript is to describe a methodology for host tissue digestion and mite quantification in cases of sarcoptic mange. This method will provide a valuable surveillance and research tool to better understand sarcoptic mange in wild and domestic animals, with applications to a diversity of other ectoparasitic diseases.

ABSTRACT

La sarna costrosa corresponde a una variedad muy rara y poco frecuente de escabiosis; una parasitosis humana causada por el ácaro Sarcoptes Scabiei (var. Hominis); se produce principalmente en pacientes inmunodreprimidos y se caracteriza por lesiones atípicas y extensas, sumamente contagiosas debido al compromiso inmunitario. Se presenta el caso clínico de un paciente de 68 años de edad con antecedentes de hipertensión arterial y diabetes mellitus tipo 2 con un mal control glucémico, que es atendido por el servicio de dermatología. Las lesiones se presentan como placas extensas pruriginosas, queratósicas, eritemato-escamosas de escamas gruesas y adherentes de seis meses de evolución en tronco, muslos y pliegues axilares, inguinales e interdigitales. La sospecha clínica de sarna costrosa fue confirmada por biopsia; el tratamiento se realizó con ivermectina con mejoría del cuadro clínico.


Crusted scabies corresponds to a very rare variety and little common scabies; a human parasitic disease caused by an acarid in this case Sarcoptes Scabiei (var. Hominis); it observed mainly among inmunosupressed patients and is characterized by atypical and extensive lesions, highly contagious due to their immune compromise. A case of a patient of 68 years old is described with a history of hypertension and diabetes mellitus type 2 with poor glycemic control, which is assist by the dermatology service. Lesions included extensive and pruritic badges, quetatotic, erythematous-squamous of thick and adherent scales of six months evolution in trunk, thighs and axillary, inguinal and interdigital folds. The clinical suspicion of crusted scabies was confirmed by biopsy; the treatment was performed with ivermectin with improvement of the clinical picture.

RESUMEN La sarna sarcóptica en los cerdos es causada por Sarcoptes scabiei var. suis el cual se distribuye ampliamente en los cinco continentes. Los productores porcícolas en general están preocupados por las infecciones parasitarias internas e ignoran las infestaciones parasitarias externas; estas últimas, causadas por S. scabiei tienen gran importancia económica ya que causa morbilidad, mortalidad, disminución de la fertilidad y de la tasa de conversión alimenticia. Este trabajo permitió determinar la presencia de sarna sarcóptica en cerdos criados bajo sistema de producción con cama profunda de una granja en el estado Guárico (Venezuela), utilizando las técnicas parasitológicas directas de flotación-concentración y microscopía directa. Los resultados demostraron que dos de siete muestras evaluadas fueron positivas con S. scabiei var. suis. El 100% de los animales presentaron lesiones de piel compatibles con la presencia del ácaro, pero el mismo solo pudo ser detectado en el 28,6% de ellos. La técnica de flotación-concentración fue más efectiva que la de microscopía directa. En este estudio describimos la primera detección de S. scabiei var. suis en cerdos domésticos en Venezuela criados en cama profunda.


ABSTRACT Sarcoptic mange infestation in pigs is caused by Sarcoptes scabiei var. suis. It is distributed worldwide. Pig owners are generally concerned about the internal parasitic infections and ignored the external parasitic infestations. But the external parasitic infestation with S. scabiei has economic significance as it causes morbidity, mortality, decreased fertility and lower feed conversion ratio. In this study the prevalence of sarcoptic mange in a pigs farm in deep beeding in Guárico state (Venezuela) was investigated, using the direct parasitological techniques of flotation-concentration and direct microscopy. Results showed that two of the seven pigs examined were positive for Sarcoptes scabiei var. suis. Skin lesions potentially attributable to this mite were present in 100% of animals, but the parasite could be detected in only 28.6% of them. A flotation-concentration technique was more effective than direct microscopy. In this report we describe for the first time the detection of Sarcoptes scabiei var. suis mites on domestic pigs in Venezuela in deep beeding.

ABSTRACT

The Quichua porcupine (Coendou quichua) is a neotropical rodent with uncertain taxonomic and conservation status. Two Quichua porcupines with severe hyperkeratosis and alopecia were found in the Magdalena River Basin of Colombia. Sarcoptes scabiei, the mite causing mange, a disease carried mainly by domestic animals, was confirmed via parasitological and molecular methods. This is the first report of mange in neotropical porcupines to date. The population-level impact of mange in Coendou spp., related mammals and predators in Colombia might represent a threat and needs further investigation.

Crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous) are wild canids found in practically all Brazilian states. They usually live and hunt in pairs, but can be found in small groups, which favors the transmission of diseases such as sarcoptic mange. This study aims to describe the epidemiological, parasitological and pathological findings of two fatal cases of sarcoptic mange in C. thous. Two wild canids were necropsied and cytological examination of skin and crust samples and histologic evaluation of various tissue samples were performed. Gross findings included poor body condition and extensive alopecia with thick skin crusts interspersed by intensely reddened alopecic areas. The cytological examination revealed numerous mites with short gnathosoma and rounded idiosoma that were transversally striated and presented triangular spines on the dorsal surface, terminal anus, and short and thick legs, characteristic of Sarcoptes scabiei. Histologic examination of the skin revealed numerous tunnels into and under the stratum corneum of the epidermis containing high amounts of S. scabiei. The mites were associated with marked acanthosis and hyperkeratosis, and mild superficial dermatitis. The findings reveal that sarcoptic mange is an important disease in wild canids.(AU)


Cachorros-do-mato (Cerdocyon thous) são canídeos selvagens encontrados em praticamente todos os estados brasileiros. Geralmente vivem e caçam em pares, mas podem ser encontrados em pequenos grupos, o que favorece a transmissão de doenças, como a sarna sarcóptica. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo descrever os achados epidemiológicos, parasitológicos e patológicos de dois casos fatais de sarna sarcóptica em cachorros-do-mato. Foram realizados necropsia de dois cachorros do mato, exame citológico de amostras de pele e crostas e exame histológico de amostras dos órgãos e tecidos. Na necropsia foram observados mau estado corporal, extensas áreas de alopecia, crostas cutâneas espessas que se desprendiam e eram intercaladas por áreas alopécicas intensamente eritematosas. No exame citológico foi observada grande quantidade de ácaros com gnatossoma curto e largo, idiossoma globoso, transversalmente estriado e com espinhos triangulares na superfície dorsal, ânus terminal e pernas curtas e grossas, característicos de Sarcoptes scabiei. Ao exame histológico da pele havia muitos túneis no estrato córneo da epiderme e abaixo dele, contendo grande quantidade de S. scabiei. Essas estruturas parasitárias estavam associadas a acantose e hiperqueratose acentuadas e dermatite superficial discreta. Os achados revelam a sarna sarcóptica como uma doença importante em cachorros do mato.(AU)

Geralmente vivem e caçam em pares, mas podem ser encontrados em pequenos grupos, o que favorece a transmissão de doenças, como a sarna sarcóptica. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo descrever os achados epidemiológicos, parasitológicos e patológicos de dois casos fatais de sarna sarcóptica em cachorros-do-mato. Foram realizados necropsia de dois cachorros do mato, exame citológico de amostras de pele e crostas e exame histológico de amostras dos órgãos e tecidos. Na necropsia foram observados mau estado corporal, extensas áreas de alopecia, crostas cutâneas espessas que se desprendiam e eram intercaladas por áreas alopécicas intensamente eritematosas. No exame citológico foi observada grande quantidade de ácaros com gnatossoma curto e largo, idiossoma globoso, transversalmente estriado e com espinhos triangulares na superfície dorsal, ânus terminal e pernas curtas e grossas, característicos de Sarcoptes scabiei. Ao exame histológico da pele havia muitos túneis no estrato córneo da epiderme e abaixo dele, contendo grande quantidade de S. scabiei. Essas estruturas parasitárias estavam associadas a acantose e hiperqueratose acentuadas e dermatite superficial discreta. Os achados revelam a sarna sarcóptica como uma doença importante em cachorros do mato.(AU)

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: To assess the prevalence of nail involvement in children <16 years old with a confirmed diagnosis of scabies. STUDY DESIGN: Observational, prospective study in 7 French dermatology departments between June 2015 and January 2017. Children were included if they had scabies confirmed by dermoscopy and/or microscopy and if nails could be sampled. The first toenails and thumbnails as well as clinically affected nails were systematically sampled for microscopic examination. Individual data were recorded via a standardized questionnaire. RESULTS: A total of 47 children with scabies were included (26 females [55.3%], mean age 3.6 ± 4.0 years). Pruritus was present in 42 children (89.3%); the relapse rate was 38.3% (n = 18). In 3 infants (6.4%), Sarcoptes mites were revealed by dermoscopy or microscopy of the first toenails (2 cases) and a thumbnail (1 case), but nails were normal in 2 children. Two of the 3 infants had already received treatment for scabies in the previous weeks. CONCLUSION: Prevalence of nail involvement in children with confirmed scabies was 6.4%. Nails should not be overlooked during scabies treatment.

ABSTRACT: Crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous) are wild canids found in practically all Brazilian states. They usually live and hunt in pairs, but can be found in small groups, which favors the transmission of diseases such as sarcoptic mange. This study aims to describe the epidemiological, parasitological and pathological findings of two fatal cases of sarcoptic mange in C. thous. Two wild canids were necropsied and cytological examination of skin and crust samples and histologic evaluation of various tissue samples were performed. Gross findings included poor body condition and extensive alopecia with thick skin crusts interspersed by intensely reddened alopecic areas. The cytological examination revealed numerous mites with short gnathosoma and rounded idiosoma that were transversally striated and presented triangular spines on the dorsal surface, terminal anus, and short and thick legs, characteristic of Sarcoptes scabiei. Histologic examination of the skin revealed numerous tunnels into and under the stratum corneum of the epidermis containing high amounts of S. scabiei. The mites were associated with marked acanthosis and hyperkeratosis, and mild superficial dermatitis. The findings reveal that sarcoptic mange is an important disease in wild canids.


RESUMO: Cachorros-do-mato (Cerdocyon thous) são canídeos selvagens encontrados em praticamente todos os estados brasileiros. Geralmente vivem e caçam em pares, mas podem ser encontrados em pequenos grupos, o que favorece a transmissão de doenças, como a sarna sarcóptica. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo descrever os achados epidemiológicos, parasitológicos e patológicos de dois casos fatais de sarna sarcóptica em cachorros-do-mato. Foram realizados necropsia de dois cachorros do mato, exame citológico de amostras de pele e crostas e exame histológico de amostras dos órgãos e tecidos. In vitro bioassay using Sarcoptes scabiei as a test microorganism is a viable method of study for diverse drugs with acaricidal properties. A great amount of assays proves the diverse and efficient biological activity of extracts and compounds from Brazilian savanna plants. This study had as main object, test and compare the acaricidal activity of four Brazilian Cerrado bioproducts: Stryphnodendron adstringens Mart., Copaifera sp., Lafoensia pacari A. St Hil. and Pterodon emarginatus Vogel, 1837. To perform this test S. scabiei mites were collected from crusts removed on ears of highly infected sows. The mites were selected and separated in Petri dishes with three different concentrations (25, 50 and 75%) of each bioproduct, to evaluate their potential acaricidal activity. The mortality of the mites was counted in each Petri dish every hour, during five hours. The statistical analyses demonstrated differences between the bioproducts tested. The oleoresin of Copaifera sp. and P. emarginatus presented the best results with 100% of mites mortality after treatment. The ethanolic extracts of S. adstringens and L. pacari demonstrated lower acaricidal activity when compared to the oleoresins, with little or no difference among the control groups tested. This bioassay demonstrated to be efficient, reliable, low cost and easy accomplishment. Oil resins from Copaifera sp. and P. emarginatus have in vitro acaricidal activity against adult females of S. scabiei var. suis.(AU)


O uso de Sarcoptes scabiei como microrganismo teste para bioensaio in vitro é um método de estudo viável para diversas drogas acaricidas. Muitos ensaios comprovam a diversidade e eficiência de atividade biocida de extratos e componentes presentes em plantas do cerrado brasileiro. Este trabalho objetivou testar e comparar a atividade acaricida de quatro bioprodutos do cerrado brasileiro: Stryphnodendron adstringens Mart., Lafoensia pacari A. St Hil., Copaifera sp. e Pterodon emarginatus Vogel, 1837. Para este estudo, ácaros S. scabiei foram colhidos em crostas removidas de orelhas de fêmeas suínas altamente infestadas. Os ácaros foram selecionados, separados e colocados em placas de Petri com três diferentes concentrações (25, 50 e 75%) de bioprodutos, para avaliar o potencial de atividade acaricida de cada um. Foi realizada a contagem da mortalidade dos ácaros em cada placa de Petri a cada hora, durante cinco horas. As análises estatísticas demonstraram diferenças entre os bioprodutos testados. As óleo-resinas de Copaifera sp. e P. emarginatus apresentaram os melhores resultados, com 100% de mortalidade dos ácaros após tratamento. Os extratos etanólicos de S. adstringens Mart. e L. pacari demonstraram menor atividade acaricida quando comparados as óleo-resinas, com pequena ou nenhuma diferença entre os resultados dos grupos controle. Este ensaio demonstrou ser uma ferramenta eficiente, confiável, de baixo custo e de fácil realização. As óleo-resinas Copaifera sp. e P. emarginatus possuem atividade acaricida in vitro sobre fêmeas adultas de S. scabiei var. suis.(AU)
