ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate long-term phosphorus (P) retention in a pilot-scale system made of four horizontal subsurface flow (HSSF) constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment. Each wetland had an area of 4.5 m2 and was operated for nearly 8 years (2833 days). Two wetlands with Schoenoplectus californicus (HSSF-Sch) and the other two with Phragmites australis (HSSF-Phr) were planted. The P removal efficiency was 18% for both types of HSSF wetlands. The primary factors that correlated with long-term P retention efficiency in HSSF were phosphorus loading rate (PLR), hydraulic loading rate (HLR) and dissolved oxygen (DO). Average biomass production of HSSF-Phr and HSSF-Sch was 4.8 and 12.1 kg dry weight (DW)/m2, respectively. The P uptake by the plant increased over the years of operation from 1.8 gP/m2 to 7.1 gP/m2 for Phragmites and from 3.2 to 7.4 gP/m2 for Schoenoplectus over the same periods. Moreover, the warm season (S/Sm) was more efficient reaching 14% P uptake than the cold season (F/W) with 9%. These results suggest that both plants' P retention capacity in HSSF systems represents a sustainable treatment in the long term.Novelty statement Long-term (8 years) phosphorus uptake by Schoenoplectus californicus and Phragmites australis and retention in pilot-scale constructed wetlands are evaluated. Schoenoplectus californicus is an uncommon species that has been less studied for phosphorus uptake compared to Phragmites australis, a globally known species in constructed wetlands. Moreover, some studies evaluating the performance of constructed wetland systems for domestic wastewater treatment are usually limited in time (1-3 years). Therefore, this long-term study demonstrates that the plant plays an important role in phosphorus retention, especially the species Schoenoplectus californicus. So, the phosphorus uptake by plants can contribute between 9 and 14% of the phosphorus load of constructed wetland systems in early years of operation.

Brazil continues to use wood as the principal raw material source for the pulp industry; although, non-wood fibers have been revealed to be a competent substitute to produce paper with different and exceptional properties. Keeping this in focus, this study aimed to assess potential of Schoenoplectus californicus fibers (C. A. Mey.) Soják, commonly identified as bulrush or reed, in cellulosic pulp generation, as an alternative fiber source for the pulp and paper industry. On analyzing the chemical composition of reed fibers, extractives of lignin, carbohydrates, uronic acids and minerals were reported. Physico-chemical characteristics of reed-based cellulosic pulp were estimated including viscosity, hexenuronic acids, etc., as well as anatomical features of length, width, etc. From the chemical analyses of the reed the presence of high concentrations of extractives and silica was clear, making them unfit as raw material for cellulosic pulp production. Pulp kraft pulping process produced brown pulps low in viscosity (34.5m Pa.s) and hexenuronic acid content. Reed is thus classifiable as short-fiber source for pulp and paper industries.(AU)


A madeira é a principal fonte de matéria prima utilizada nas indústrias de celulose no Brasil, porém o emprego de fibras não madeireiras pode ser uma alternativa satisfatória para a fabricação de papéis com propriedades diferenciadas e especiais. Nesse sentido, o objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o potencial das fibras de Schoenoplectus californicus (C.A. Mey.) Soják, popularmente conhecido como junco, na produção de polpa celulósica, como fonte alternativa de fibras para as indústrias do setor de celulose e papel. Nas fibras do junco foram realizadas análises de composição química, entre elas: teores de extrativos, lignina, carboidratos, ácidos urônicos e minerais. As polpas celulósicas produzidas a partir do junco foram avaliadas no que diz respeito às características físico-químicas (viscosidade, ácidos hexenurônicos, etc.) e anatômicas (comprimento, largura, etc.). As análises químicas demonstraram que as fibras do junco apresentam altos teores de extrativos e sílica, o que as tornam uma matéria prima desfavorável para a produção de polpa celulósica. O processo de polpação kraft do junco resultou em polpas marrons de baixa viscosidade (34,5m Pa.s) e com baixos teores de ácidos hexenurônicos. O junco pode ser classificado como fonte de fibras curtas para as indústrias de celulose e papel.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Wetlands usually provide a natural mechanism that diminishes the transport of toxic compounds to other compartments of the ecosystem by immobilization and accumulation in belowground tissues and/or soil. This study was conducted to assess the ability of Schoenoplectus californicus growing in natural marsh sediments, with zinc and lead addition, to tolerate and accumulate these metals, taking account of the metal distribution in the sediment fractions. The Zn and Pb were mainly found in available (exchangeable) and potentially available (bound to organic matter) forms, respectively. The absorption of Zn and Pb by plants increased in sediments with added metals. Both metals were largely retained in roots (translocation factor < 1). Lead rhizome concentrations only increased significantly in treatments with high doses of metal independently of added Zn. The addition of Zn increased its concentration in roots and shoots significantly, while its concentration in rhizomes only increased when both metals were added together. Zinc concentration in shoots did not reach the toxic level for plants. Zinc and Pb concentrations in roots were high, but they were not sufficient to reduce biomass growth.

ABSTRACT

Nitrogen and phosphorus distribution in a constructed wetland fed with treated swine slurry from an anaerobic lagoon were studied. The methodology considered a daily meteorological monitoring site. During 2011 to 2012, water, soil and plants (Schoenoplectus californicus (C.A. Méyer) Sójak, Typha angustifolia (L.)) were seasonally sampled (spring and fall) into the constructed wetland. During study period, results showed that rainfall was the main factor of maintenance hydraulic conditions, while evapotranspiration was driver of variations in water storage level. Nitrogen and phosphorus removal from the water phase were up to 54% and 37%, respectively. Onto soil were adsorbed over 70% nitrogen and 65% phosphorus. Phosphorus was less mobile than nitrogen, since it was bound to oxides Fe-Mn. Inorganic nitrogen species were affected by level water and seasonal vegetable maturation. During spring, N-NH4(+) was the predominant soil species, while in the fall, N-NO3(-) was dominant near the belowground part of Sc and NH4(+) near to the belowground zone of Ta. In addition, nutrients uptake was less than 30% with 64% aboveground-spring and 85% belowground-fall for both plants. Findings showed nitrification process evidences when water levels are below 0.1 m.

Lagoons are considered protected areas because these systems play a keyecological role. However, the extraction of macrophyte Schoenoplectus californicus is held formanufacture of handcrafts, being an alternative income for riverbank communities. This studyevaluated the impact of S. californicus experimental cutting on benthic macroinvertebrates trougha field experiment. Macroinvertebrates were sampled at 1, 12, 26 and 60 days after themacrophyte cutting in demarked plots (1 m²), as well at control plots. The families number wasnot statistically different (ANOVA, p > 0.05), but the total density of invertebrates, and thedensity of Ceratopogonidae were significant (ANOVA, p < 0.05) for interaction betweensampling date and treatment. A Principal Components Analysis identified that the level of thewater column was the variable that most influenced the variation between the samples gatheredin the experiment. We concluded that the cutting of S. californicus, in this area, as the intensity ofthe cut held, did not affect considerably the aquatic macroinvertebrates. The results suggest thatthe small-scale extractivism in these regions carries little effect because the fauna of adjacent areasprobably can quickly colonize the disturbed areas.(AU)

Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar oimpacto do corte de S. californicus sobre os macroinvertebrados bentônicos por meio de umexperimento de campo. Os macroinvertebrados foram amostrados um dia, 12, 26 e 60 dias após ocorte em macrófitas em parcelas demarcadas (1 m²), bem como nas parcelas-controle. As famíliasde macroinvertebrados mais abundantes não apresentaram diferenças significativas (ANOVA,p < 0,05), mas a densidade total de invertebrados e a densidade de Ceratopogonidae foramsignificativas (ANOVA, p < 0,05) para a interação entre a data de amostragem e tratamento. AAnálise de Componentes Principais identificou que a profundidade no local do experimento foi avariável que influenciou a variabilidade entre as amostras coletadas no experimento. Concluiu-seque o corte de S. californicus, nessa área, como a intensidade do corte realizado, não afetadrasticamente a composição de macroinvertebrados aquáticos. Os resultados sugerem que oextrativismo em pequenas escalas nessas regiões exerce pouca influência, pois a fauna em áreasadjacentes pode rapidamente colonizar as áreas perturbadas.(AU)
