ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore perceptions among nurses, managers, and policymakers regarding organizational readiness to implement mHealth for the promotion of healthy lifestyle behaviors in child and school healthcare. Methods: Individual semi-structured interviews with nurses (n = 10), managers (n = 10), and policymakers (n = 8) within child and school healthcare in Sweden. Inductive content analysis was used for data analysis. Results: Data showed that various trust-building aspects in health care organizations may contribute to readiness to implement mHealth. Several aspects were perceived to contribute trusting conditions: (a) how health-related data could be stored and managed; (b) how mHealth aligned with current organizational ways of working; (c) how implementation of mHealth was governed; and (d) camaraderie within a healthcare team to facilitate use of mHealth in practice. Poor capability to manage health-related data, as well as lack of governance of mHealth implementation were described as dealbreakers for readiness to implement mHealth in healthcare organizations. Conclusions: Healthcare professionals and policymakers perceived that trusting conditions for mHealth implementation within organizations were central for readiness. Specifically, governance of mHealth implementation and the ability to manage health-data produced by mHealth were perceived critical for readiness.

ABSTRACT

This article is the second in a series of three articles discussing the importance of interprofessional collaboration between the school nurse and other school-based and community professionals to create a healthcare team. Developing the healthcare team begins with identifying the individual medical, mental health, and educational needs of the student. Expertise in both education and healthcare systems makes school nurses ideal candidates for coordinating with the healthcare team to meet the needs of the student. This article builds on the first article by providing some examples of the collaboration that occurs between the school nurse and other team members, as well as identifying facilitators and barriers to this collaboration.

ABSTRACT

AIM: The aim of this study was to compare and describe gender differences and the associations between symptoms of depression and family conflict and economics, lifestyle habits, school satisfaction and the use of health-care services among adolescents. METHODS: Data were retrieved from Ungdata which is a cross-sectional study. Adolescents ( n=8052) from secondary school grades 8, 9 and 10 (age 13-16 years) participated in the study from 41 municipal schools in four counties. RESULTS: Girls reported a higher prevalence of symptoms of depression than boys. Gender differences were seen on all items related to symptoms of depression, family conflict and economics, lifestyle habits, school satisfaction and health-care services. Multiple regressions showed that family conflicts and economics contributed to 19.2% of the variance in symptoms of depression in girls and 12.4% in boys. School satisfaction made a strong contribution: 21.5% in girls and 15.4% in boys. The total model explained 49% of the total variance in symptoms of depression in girls and 32.5% in boys. CONCLUSIONS: Gender demonstrated a pattern through a higher proportion of girls reporting symptoms of depression, family conflict and economics, lifestyle habits, school satisfaction and use of health-care services. Even though the adolescents reported symptoms of depression, few used the school health-care services and public health nurses. This indicates that they need a person-centered approach for symptoms of depression. The findings may have important implications for planning for adolescents in school health services.

ABSTRACT

Nurses in Swedish child and school healthcare need to balance their assignment of promoting children's health and development based on the national health-monitoring programme with their responsibility to consider each child's needs. In this balancing act, they encounter children through directed and pliable strategies to fulfil their professional obligations. The aim of this study was to analyse the extent to which nurses use different strategies when encountering children during their recurrent health visits throughout childhood. A quantitative descriptive content analysis was used to code 30 video recordings displaying nurses' encounters with children (3-16 years of age). A constructed observation protocol was used to identify the codes. The results show that nurses use pliable strategies (58%) and directed strategies (42%) in encounters with children. The action they use the most within the pliable strategy is encouraging (51%), while in the directed strategy, the action they use most is instructing (56%). That they primarily use these opposing actions can be understood as trying to synthesize their twofold assignment. However, they seem to act pliably to be able to fulfil their public function as dictated by the national health-monitoring programme, rather than to meet each child's needs.

ABSTRACT
