ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Young women often face substantial psychological challenges in the initial years following cancer diagnosis, leading to a comparatively lower quality of life than older survivors. While mobile apps have emerged as potential interventions, their effectiveness remains inconclusive due to the diversity in intervention types and variation in follow-up periods. Furthermore, there is a particular dearth of evidence regarding the efficacy of these apps' intelligent features in addressing psychological distress with these apps. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a mobile app with intelligent design called "AI-TA" on cancer-related psychological health and ongoing symptoms with a randomized controlled design. METHODS: Women aged 18 to 45 years diagnosed with breast cancer were randomly assigned to the intervention or control group. The intervention was AI-TA, which included 2-way web-based follow-up every 2 weeks. Both intention-to-treat (ITT) and per-protocol (PP) analyses employed repeated measurement analysis of variance. The participants' background features, primary outcomes (psychological distress and frequency, self-efficacy, and social support), and secondary outcomes (quality of life) were measured using multiple instruments at 3 time points (baseline, 1-month intervention, and 3-month intervention). RESULTS: A total of 124 participants were randomly allocated to the control group (n=62, 50%) or intervention group (n=62, 50%). In total, 92.7% (115/124) of the participants completed the intervention. Significant improvements in psychological symptoms (Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale-Short Form) were observed in the ITT group from baseline to 1-month intervention relative to the control group (ITT vs control: 1.17 vs 1.23; P<.001), which persisted at 3-month follow-up (ITT vs control: 0.68 vs 0.91; P<.001). Both the ITT and PP groups exhibited greater improvements in self-efficacy (Cancer Behavior Inventory-Brief Version) than the control group at 1-month (ITT vs PP vs control: 82.83 vs 77.12 vs 65.35; P<.001) and 3-month intervention (ITT vs PP vs control: 92.83 vs 89.30 vs 85.65; P<.001). However, the change in social support (Social Support Rating Scale) did not increase significantly until 3-month intervention (ITT vs control: 50.09 vs 45.10; P=.002) (PP vs control: 49.78 vs 45.10; P<.001). All groups also experienced beneficial effects on quality of life (Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast), which persisted at 3-month follow-up (P<.001). CONCLUSIONS: The intelligent mobile app AI-TA incorporating intelligent design shows promise for reducing psychological and cancer-related symptoms among young survivors of breast cancer. ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to explore patients' experiences of being prepared for allogenic haematopoietic cell transplantation and to explore their perceived self-efficacy and preparedness for self-care after allogenic haematopoietic cell transplantation. METHODS: Nine participants, who recently underwent allo-HCT, were interviewed regarding their views on preparedness, self-efficacy and self-care. The interviews were analysed using inductive qualitative content analysis. RESULTS: An overarching theme, Life is taken apart, then you have to know how to put the pieces together, and four sub-themes: Convert information into something understandable; Taking responsibility, maintaining and preparing for an uncertain time in life; Balancing vigilance with independence; and Reorientating in an altered body places new demands on self-care illustrate the dismantlement of life during treatment and how actions and approaches can build a new life. CONCLUSIONS: Both participants and healthcare professionals prioritised preparing for allo-HCT in the period before admission. However, during admission, preparation decreased and the time was not used for preparatory learning. This meant that participants were well prepared for the acute phase but unprepared for life after completion of treatment. Among the participants, self-efficacy was good. They sought information about taking care of their health before and in the aftermath of allo-HCT. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS: This study provides insight into, and knowledge about, how patients prepare before, during and after treatment. This knowledge should primarily be directed towards healthcare professionals to be used for future patients who may need advice and support, as well as continued preparation for a life after transplantation.

Introduction: The role of bystanders in cyberbullying situations is critical, with the potential to significantly influence outcomes. Bystanders who demonstrate positive behaviors-such as reporting incidents or supporting victims-can help to mitigate the damaging effects of cyberbullying. Based on the Social Cognitive Theory, this study seeks to address the psychosocial mechanisms that underlie positive cyber-bystander behaviors. Methods: A total of 1,716 students in Grades 8-12 from three secondary schools in China participated in this study. Path analysis was utilized to delineate the relationships between internet self-efficacy, empathy, teacher and parental support, and cyber-bystander behaviors. Results: Adolescents who received greater support from teachers were more likely to demonstrate increased internet self-efficacy and empathy. In contrast, higher levels of parental warmth were associated with lower levels of internet self-efficacy. Teacher support and parental warmth exerted an indirect effect on positive bystander behaviors through empathy. Discussion: The importance of parental warmth paired with Internet self-efficacy in preventing online interpersonal violence and motivate active bystander behaviors is considerable. We recommend adopting a nuanced approach that differentiates between empathy and internet self-efficacy in cyber-bystander research.

ABSTRACT

Background: Self-efficacy is a popular psychological concept that refers to an individual's perception or belief in his ability to perform specific actions. This study aimed to assess the predictive value of self-efficacy, measured using the Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease 6-Item Scale (SEM6S) questionnaire, for diabetes management and overall well-being in patients with diabetes. Subject and methods: An anonymous online cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the self-efficacy of diabetic patients in the Asser region of Saudi Arabia. The participants were requested to upload their most recent glycated hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) measurements taken in the last three months, which helped in the accurate categorization of their diabetes as either controlled or uncontrolled. We used the valid Arabic version of the SEM6S and WHO-5 well-being questionnaires to assess patient self-efficacy and well-being. Results: A cohort of 342 patients was enrolled in the study, 67.25% were married, their mean age was 43.17 ± 17.61 years, and 52.69% had university-level or higher education. Among the participants, 46.0% exhibited well-being, while 24.9% reported poor well-being, including 9.4% who were identified as experiencing depression. The mean scores of self-efficacy and well-being were significantly higher among those with controlled diabetes versus uncontrolled diabetes (40.86 ± 13.26 vs. 36.48 ± 13.26) and (67.35 ± 21.22 vs. 60.93 ± 25.05), respectively. The predictors of glycemic control were self-efficacy [Odds ratio (OR)=1.03 (95%CI, 1.01-1.06, P=0.002], having other chronic diseases [OR=3.25 (95%CI), P<0.001], having type 1 diabetes [OR=7.16, 95%CI, P=0.005], being Saudi [OR=7.67, (95%CI, P=0.027], working in a public sector [OR=0.15, (95%CI, 0.05-0.44), P=0.005], being unemployed [OR=0.19, (95%CI, 0.06-0.59), P=0.005], being a smoker [OR=0.44, 95%CI, 0.19-0.98, P=0.048], and duration of diabetes between 6-10 years [OR= 0.33, 95%CI, 0.11-0.95), P=0.043] or more than 10 years OR=0.32, 95%CI, 0.12-0.86), P=0.026]. The main determinants of well-being were having self-efficacy [OR=1.07 (95%CI, 1.04-1.09), P = 0.0001], having public health insurance [OR=4.36 (95%CI, P=0.015], and education level (read and write) [OR=0.13 (95%CI,.02-.70), P=0.021]. Conclusions: The study reveals that non-modifiable and modifiable factors, including self-efficacy, play a crucial role in diabetes control. The study recommends providing targeted educational interventions, using different social media platforms, psychosocial support programs, and inclusive healthcare policies to improve diabetes control and mental well-being among diabetic patients.

ABSTRACT

A self-reported Genetic Counseling Self-Efficacy Scale (GCSES) was developed in English to measure genetic counselors' self-efficacy, a factor known to affect their job performance. This study verified the reliability and validity of the GCSES for use in Korea. The scale was translated and back-translated into Korean for cultural fit verification. Expert analysis was performed to ensure content validity. For construct validity, a confirmatory factor analysis of the six-factor structures of the GCSES and an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of the K-GCSES were conducted. To confirm the convergent validity and discriminant validity of the items, a multitrait/multi-item matrix analysis of the relationship between items and subscales was conducted. The reliability was evaluated by examining internal consistency and test-retest reliability. A total of 62 participants were recruited from certified genetic counselors associated with the Korean Society of Medical Genetics and Genomics and from four graduate schools offering genetic counseling programs. Confirmatory factor analysis showed an inadequate fit to the original GCSES structure. Through EFA, three-factor structures were identified: "counseling competence and psychosocial skills," "genetic testing," and "information gathering." Of the original 38 GCSES items, five were removed due to low factor loadings and small inter-item correlations. The item convergent validity and discriminant validity of the Korean version of the GCSES were established, and the correlation between the subfactors showed statistical significance (0.711-0.983). Cronbach's alpha was 0.985, and the intraclass correlation coefficient ranged from 0.882 to 0.897, securing reliability. The K-GCSES has a three-factor structure with acceptable reliability and sufficient validity. Differences in the factor structure between the K-GCSES and GCSES may be due to cultural factors. K-GCSES can be used as a tool to evaluate the competence of genetic counselors and genetic counseling students in Korea and to improve the quality of professionalism and education.

ABSTRACT

Previous studies have shown that children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD)/Dyspraxia have poorer maths performance compared to their neurotypical (NT) counterparts. However, no studies have explored the cognitive and emotional factors affecting the maths performance of adults with DCD. This study, therefore, investigated the role of working memory (WM), maths anxiety (MAS), and maths self-efficacy on the maths performance of adults with DCD. We found that adults with DCD had lower WM and maths performance and were more maths anxious than their NT peers. However, there were no significant differences in maths self-efficacy. When looking at the predictors of maths performance, we found a positive relationship between WM resources and the DCD maths performance, possibly indicating that they relied more on WM resources to perform simple mental arithmetic tasks than NTs. On the other hand, MAS had an inverse relationship with the NT maths performance but not with the DCD performance. The reasons and implications of these findings will be discussed.

Introduction: Sexual satisfaction has been shown to have a strong association with many aspects of sexual health and wellbeing. It is further considered a robust indicator of an individual's health status and general wellbeing, revealing that a person can enjoy pleasurable and healthy sexual experiences, beyond the mere absence of sexual and reproductive health issues. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between sexual satisfaction, sexual behaviors, sexual self-efficacy, and the importance personally attributed to maintaining an active and satisfying sexual life among young and middle-aged women aged 18-50. Design: A descriptive correlational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted. Methods: Participants (N = 1,076 women) completed self-reports on sexual self-efficacy beliefs, frequency of sexual behaviors, the importance attributed to active and healthy sexuality, and multidimensional sexual satisfaction. Results: The supported mediation model indicated that sexual self-efficacy was related to sexual satisfaction directly and indirectly through sexual behavior and a serial path through sexual behavior and the perceived importance of healthy sexuality. The total effect was significant, and the full model explained 7.3% of the global sexual satisfaction variance (F = 17.218, p = 0.000), with the mediated effect accounting for 44.3%. Conclusion: This study confirms a partial serial mediation model by which sexual self-efficacy significantly predicts sexual satisfaction through sexual behaviors and the importance attributed to a healthy sexuality. Due to its significant contribution, the perceived importance of sexuality should be considered when studying correlates of sexual satisfaction. These findings have interesting implications for the development of strategies aimed at sexual health promotion and sexual education among women in early and middle adulthood.

ABSTRACT

Responsible gambling (RG) refers to a set of protective strategies aiming at containing the negative consequences associated with gambling. To improve the effectiveness of RG, it is essential to understand factors influencing gamblers' adherence to RG. Past literatures on addictive behaviors have demonstrated that one's self-efficacy and self-esteem are associated with the adherence to protective behaviors of the specific addictive behaviors. The present study aims to test whether gamblers' self-esteem and RG self-efficacy can be applied to explain their adherence to protective gambling behaviors. Two hundred and thirty-six past-year gamblers were randomly selected to take part in a phone survey. Path analysis showed that both gamblers' RG self-efficacy and self-esteem were positively associated with gamblers' RG behaviors, while RG behaviors were negatively linked to the problem gambling tendency. The findings provided insight into potential promotion and intervention strategies based on self-esteem and self-efficacy and those strategies may be adopted in the primary prevention of gambling disorder.

BACKGROUND: German-speaking mothers have breastfeeding rates below the international breastfeeding recommendations. Previous research has found that breastfeeding self-efficacy is an important and modifiable predictor of breastfeeding outcomes, thus improving breastfeeding rates. The Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (BSES-SF) is used in many countries to assess maternal breastfeeding self-efficacy. This instrument has not been available in German. RESEARCH AIMS: To translate the BSES-SF into German and assess its psychometric properties among breastfeeding mothers up to 12 weeks postpartum. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted online with 355 breastfeeding mothers recruited from breastfeeding groups through Facebook. The BSES-SF was translated into German using forward and back-translation. To test reliability, item-total characteristics, including Cronbach's alpha, were examined. We used principal component analysis, as well as known-groups comparisons for evaluating construct validity, and examined the relationship between breastfeeding self-efficacy and demographic variables. RESULTS: The mean age of participants was 32.4 years (SD = 4.32). The Cronbach's alpha coefficient was .88 and corrected item-total correlations ranged between .37 and .73. Principal components analysis yielded one component with factor loadings >.40 and an eigenvalue of 5.62, which explained 40% of the total variance. In addition, known group comparisons provided further evidence for construct validity. There was no significant difference in BSES-SF scores in terms of demographic and obstetrics characteristics. CONCLUSION: Our results provide evidence that the German version of the BSES-SF is a reliable and valid tool for measuring breastfeeding self-efficacy among mothers in German-speaking countries.

Aims: Prostate cancer patients face impaired body image and psychological distress during the diagnosis and treatment of the disease, which leads to changes in mood, cognition and behavior. Psychological resilience has been shown to buffer shocks and stresses from the disease. Therefore, this study investigates the relationship between family functioning and psychological resilience in prostate cancer patients and the mediating role of self-efficacy between family functioning and psychological resilience to provide a relevant theoretical basis for improving patients' psychological status by providing relevant theoretical basis. Method: Using a cross-sectional design, participants were 215 patients with prostate cancer admitted to and treated in a tertiary hospital in Jiangsu province, China. Questionnaires were administered using the general information questionnaire, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), the Family Adaptation, Partnership, Growth, Affection, and Resolution Index (APGAR), and the General Self-efficacy Scale (GSES). Data were analyzed using descriptive and correlational analyses and the bootstrap mediation test was used to test the effect relationship between the variables. Results: Family functioning, self-efficacy and psychological resilience were significantly and positively correlated (r = 0.526, P < 0.01; r = 0.378, P < 0.01; r = 0.358, P < 0.01). The mediating effect of psychological resilience between family functioning and psychological resilience was significant, accounting for 42.56%. Conclusion: Family function and self-efficacy have been shown to increase the level of psychological resilience in prostate cancer patients. Attention should be paid to the mental health problems of prostate cancer patients, early screening and intervention, and the use of patients' family resources to improve their confidence in recovering from the disease, thus increasing their psychological resilience and improving their mental health.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To translate and cross-culturally adapt the Stroke Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (SSEQ) from English to Swedish and to evaluate psychometric properties of the questionnaire. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design, where the translation followed a process including initial translation, synthesis, backward translation, expert committee, and pretest. Content validity was assessed using Content validity index (CVI). Psychometric assessments included floor-ceiling effects and internal consistency. RESULTS: Language and cultural congruence were achieved, and content validity index scores were high (0.923-1). The psychometric evaluations provided acceptable outcomes concerning internal consistency, with Cronbach's alpha scores for the total scale (0.902), the activities subscale (0.861) and the self-management subscale (0.818) respectively. Ceiling effects were evident, but no floor effects. CONCLUSION: This study found the Swedish version of the SSEQ promising as a tool for assessment of self-efficacy in a Swedish stroke care setting, although further psychometric assessments are recommended in future studies.

BACKGROUND: To explore the associations between anxiety and depression symptoms and academic burnout among children and adolescents in China, and to examine the role of resilience and self-efficacy in addressing academic burnout. METHODS: A total of 2,070 students in grades 4-8 were recruited from two primary and three middle schools in Shanghai, completed the Elementary School Student Burnout Scale (ESSBS), the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children-Chinese (MASC-C), the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), and the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), with 95.04% effective response rate. Multivariable regression analyses examining the associations between anxiety / depression symptoms and academic burnout (as well as the associations between resilience / self-efficacy and academic burnout) were performed using STATA 16.0 and SmartPLS 3.0. RESULTS: Anxiety symptoms (ß = 0.124, p < 0.01) and depression symptoms (ß = 0.477, p < 0.01) were positively correlated with academic burnout. Resilience partially mediated the association between depression symptoms and academic burnout (ß = 0.059, p < 0.01), with a mediation rate of 12.37%. Self-efficacy partially mediated the associations between anxiety symptoms and academic burnout (ß = 0.022, p < 0.01) and between depression symptoms and academic burnout (ß = 0.017, p < 0.01), with mediation rates of 17.74% and 3.56%, respectively. Resilience and self-efficacy together (ß = 0.041, p < 0.01) formed a mediating chain between depression symptoms and academic burnout, with a mediation rate of 8.6%. CONCLUSIONS: Anxiety and depression symptoms were positively associated with academic burnout. Resilience and self-efficacy were found to mediate the associations partially.

OBJECTIVES: Clinical research professionals must be equipped with adequate training in sound scientific methods and appropriate ethics. In this study, we aimed to assess the current clinical research self-efficacy of researchers at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC). We also evaluated the effects of training courses on researchers' self-efficacy. METHODS: Utilizing a cross-sectional design, we used the shortened Clinical Research Appraisal Inventory (CRAI-12) through an online survey to assess the current clinical research self-efficacy of 600 researchers at HMC, Doha, Qatar. After conducting descriptive analyses, unpaired t test and ANOVA were used to determine significant mean percentages between variables. Pearson correlation coefficients were also calculated to measure the association among the interval variables. All tests were 2-sided, and significance was defined as P < .05. RESULTS: For all questions, except those related to "funding," most participants scored on the upper half of the scale (>5), reflecting higher self-efficacy for the topics covered in CRAI. Gender differences were significant across all factors, with males reporting higher levels of self-assessed efficacy and in clinical research. Other factors such as higher education degrees and previous (external) clinical research training were also associated with higher self-reported clinical research efficacy. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study indicate that researchers at HMC possess high clinical research self-efficacy overall, but lower self-efficacy in securing funding. Gender and education level positively influence self-efficacy across CRAI factors. Notably, clinical research training boosts self-efficacy, especially when obtained outside HMC. In conclusion, healthcare providers are strongly encouraged to engage in effective clinical research training courses, both within and outside of their healthcare institutions, to improve their clinical research efficacy and enhance clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: The unfolding case-study learning approach is a growing modernized learning strategy implemented in different health disciplines. However, there is a lack of existing research that examines the effects of unfolding case studies in advanced nursing courses. AIM: To examine the impact of applying an unfolding case-study learning approach on critical care nursing students' knowledge, critical thinking, and self-efficacy. METHODS: This posttest-only, quasi-experimental study was conducted at XXX University in Palestine. A single-stage cluster sampling was used to assign nursing students enrolled in the critical care nursing course into experiment and conventional groups. The intervention group (n= 91) underwent unfolding case-study learning for selected cardiovascular topics, whereas the conventional group (n= 78) was taught using the traditional teaching methods. The posttest assessment was conducted using Knowledge Acquisition tests, Yoon`s Critical Thinking Disposition Instrument (YCTD), and the Self-Efficacy for Learning and Performance instruments. The Social Constructivist Theoretical Framework was integrated into the study. RESULTS: Homogeneity was achieved between both groups concerning Age, Gender, and GPA. The experiment group scored significantly higher than the conventional group regarding the posttest knowledge acquisition tests (7.12 vs. 5.49, respectively, t=-12.7, P<0.001, CI: -1.89 to -1.38), critical thinking (4.32 vs. 3.63 respectively, t=17.390, p<0.001, CI: -77 to -61) and self-efficacy (6.12 vs. 4.4 respectively, t=-30.897, p<0.001, CI: -1.82 to -1.60). Multivariate analysis revealed that 69 % of the variations of posttest scores were influenced by critical thinking scores (Adjusted R Squared=0.690, F=3.47, P=0002, η2=0.969). Similarly, self-efficacy has been shown to contribute by 74 % to the variations of scores after conducting the study program (Adjusted R Squared=0.743, F=4.21, P=0001, η2=0.974). However, the variations of both critical thinking and self-efficacy scores were not significantly influenced by the contribution of knowledge acquisition (p=0.772 and 0.857, respectively) and students' GPA (p=0.305 and 0.956, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Irrespective of knowledge level and GPA, the unfolding case-study learning approach can enhance the critical thinking and self-efficacy of students enrolling in advanced nursing courses.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Seizure-related self-efficacy is the belief individuals have that they can perform the necessary actions to cope effectively with their seizures. Determining, developing, strengthening, and maintaining the perception of self-efficacy in children with epilepsy facilitates the child's disease management and their ability to cope with it. This study aimed to assess the impact of epilepsy-related parental fears during the COVID-19 period on the seizure self-efficacy of their children. METHODS: A total of 321 children with epilepsy and their parents participated in this descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional study. Data were collected through the Descriptive Information Form, the Seizure Self-Efficacy Scale for Children (SSES-C), and the Epilepsy-Related Fears in Parents Questionnaire (EFPQ). Descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, and mean scores, were used to analyze the characteristics of the children and their parents. The Shapiro-Wilk test was utilized to assess the normality of the scale data. Pearson correlation analysis examined the relationship between parents' epilepsy-related fears and their children's seizure self-efficacy, while multiple regression analysis determined the effect of parental fears on children's seizure self-efficacy. RESULTS: The mean age of children included in the study was 12.65±2.37 years. Analysis revealed a strong and significant negative correlation between parents' epilepsy-related fears during the COVID-19 period and the seizure self-efficacy of their children. In the model created with regression analysis, The mean scores of parents on the short-term fears of parents about epilepsy of the EFPQ explained 85 % of children's seizure self-efficacy. The mean scores of parents on the long-term fears of parents about epilepsy of the EFPQ explained 85 % of children's seizure self-efficacy. It was determined that all of these variables together explained 85 % of the seizure self-efficacy of children with epilepsy. CONCLUSION: The findings of the study underscore the importance of addressing parents' fears regarding epilepsy, emphasizing the need for healthcare professionals to be aware of and provide support for these concerns. Future studies should focus on interventions to enhance the seizure self-efficacy of children with epilepsy.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To investigate the influence of self-management, self-efficacy, depression and social support by disease stage on quality of life in patients undergoing haemodialysis in South Korea. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey design was used. Participants completed self-report questionnaires. METHODS: A convenience sample of 409 patients undergoing haemodialysis were recruited to complete self-report questionnaires. T-tests, ANOVA, multiple comparisons with Dunnett's T3 post hoc test, Pearson's correlation coefficients and hierarchical linear multiple regression were conducted using IBM SPSS version 25.0. RESULTS: The crisis stage group had the highest mean quality of life score (M = 83.92). Factors influencing quality of life were social support and depression in the crisis stage and depression, self-efficacy and self-management in the stable stage, explaining 38.5% and 51.5% of the total variation each. In the downward stage, only depression was a significant predictor of quality of life, explaining 55.9% of it. CONCLUSION: Long-term intervention to decrease depression regardless of disease stage to improve quality of life in haemodialysis patients is required. Nursing interventions should include increasing social support to promote patients' quality of life in the crisis stage and improving self-efficacy and self-management in the stable stage. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE: Based on quality of life predictors, the development and implementation of patient-centered nursing interventions considering the patient's disease stage can improve haemodialysis patients' quality of life. IMPACT: There is minimal research on patients' quality of life considering disease stage. Depression was a significant factor of haemodialysis patients' quality of life in all stages, while social support was significant in the crisis stage and self-efficacy and self-management was significant in the stable stage. REPORTING METHOD: This study was reported according to the STROBE checklist. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: Validated interviewer-administered questionnaires were completed by patients undergoing haemodialysis in this study.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to reveal the effect of the motivational interviewing on the quality of life and self-efficacy behaviors of individuals with chronic diseases. MATERIAL-METHOD: For this meta-analysis study, PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCOhost, Google Scholar, and YÖK Theses databases were searched in January-May 2021 without year limitation. As a result, 38 studies were included in the study: 23 for the quality of life variable, and 21 for the self-efficacy behaviors variable (in 6 studies, both variables were examined together). The data were synthesized with meta-analysis and narrative methods. The total sample size of the studies is 25,425. RESULTS: This meta-analysis study showed that the motivational interviewing applied to individuals with chronic diseases changed their quality of life (SMD: 0.296, %95 CI: 0.054-0.537, Z = 2.402, p = .016, I2 = %95). The type of chronic disease, measurement tool, sample group, disease group, age range, and whether the motivational interviewer was a nurse or not changed the effect size of the motivational interviewing on the quality of life. The self-efficacy score average of the experimental group to which motivational interviewing was applied was statistically similar to that of the control group (SMD: 0.141, %95 CI: -0.065, 0.347; Z = 1.346, p = .178, I2 = %87). CONCLUSIONS: As a result of the meta-analysis, it was determined that the use of motivational interviewing increased the quality of life level of individuals with chronic diseases. However, it is thought that more research is needed because some studies were conducted with small sample size and prepost test design. The results of the study may provide guidance on the interventions to be used in improving the quality of life of individuals with chronic diseases.

ABSTRACT

Career choice is a highly complex process. The growth in the number, nature, and overlap between occupations creates a more multifaceted career landscape, especially for young people. This study expands the Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) by developing a model that includes additional factors influencing career choices, such as self-efficacy, career exploration, and social support. A convenient sampling method was applied, with 340 Vietnamese students responding to the questionnaire on Google Forms between August and October 2022. The results supported the research hypotheses, with environmental exploration emerging as the most decisive factor influencing career choice. The most exciting finding of this article is the negative impact of social support on the relationship between environmental exploration and career choice. Finally, the results underscore the significance of implementing career guidance and providing career experiences for university students at educational institutions.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The mental health of unverisity students is influenced by diverse factorsis multifaceted, requiring further investigation to evaluate its current status and determinants. The present study aims to address this gap by targeting Chinese university students and employing the Psychological Resilience Dynamic System model. Through a questionnaire survey, this research endeavors to explore the mental health status and influencing factors. Ultimately, the findings of this study aim to provide a theoretical basis and tailored practical guidance for the development of mental health intervention strategies for university students. Methods: Based on the Psychological Resilience Dynamic System Model, the mental health status of 3,390 Chinese university students from 15 universities was empirically investigated with the principle of stratified sampling and the geographical distribution and disciplinary diversity of universities. The questionnaires used included Kessler psychological distress scale, psychological resilience scale,positive psychological capital scale, family hardiness index and social support scale. Among the participants, 47.85% were male and 52.15% were female. Regarding the origin, 42.89% of the students were from rural areas, while 57.11% were from urban areas. Results: Key findings unveil: (1) A prevalence of 24.54% in students has suboptimal mental health, with 18.70 and 5.84%, respectively, representing those with poor and relatively poor mental health conditions; (2) A noteworthy negative correlation (p < 0.01) between mental health scores of university students and nine pivotal factors, including psychological resilience, self-efficacy, optimism, hope, resilience, family resilience, objective support, subjective support, and support utilization; (3) Eight factors, including grade, family economic status, psychological resilience, self-efficacy, optimism, family resilience, objective support, and support utilization, emerge as significant predictors of university students' mental health (p <0.001), collectively elucidating 57.9% of the total variance in mental health. Discussion: The aforementioned research results, indicate that the influencing factors on the mental health of university students encompass four main aspects. These include individual demographic factors such as grade and family economic status, positive psychological capital factors such as psychological resilience, self-efficacy, optimism, hope, and resilience, family resilience factors including responsibility, control, and challenge, and societal support factors including objective support, subjective support, and support utilization. Based on this, this paper focuses on four recommendations: giving full play to the leading role of universities in mental health education and stress intervention, strengthening the educational power of positive family ideals and role modeling, building a support system for positive social atmosphere and psychological counseling, and improving the self-shaping ability of university students' psychological resilience and positive psychological capital. These recommendations aspire to better promote the mental health of university students and provide a strength reserve for psychological problem intervention.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the Readiness for Return-to-Work (RRTW) of patients with head and neck tumours and to analyse the relationships among self-efficacy, disease uncertainty, psychosocial adaptation, and RRTW in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 259 HNC patients with a discharge length of ≥1 month at a tertiary hospital in Liaoning Province. The research tools included a self-designed general information questionnaire, the Readiness for Return-to-Work (RRTW) Scale, the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), the Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale (MUIS), and the Self-Reporting Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale (PAIS-SR). Descriptive statistical analysis, the rank sum test, Spearman correlation analysis, and ordered multiple and dichotomous logistic regression analyses were used. RESULTS: The overall RRTW among HNC patients was low (41.9%). HNC patients who did not return to work were mainly in the precontemplation stage (38.1%) and contemplation stage (29.9%). HNC patients who returned to work were mainly in the active maintenance stage (64.2%). Children's status (OR = 0.218, 95% CI 0.068-0.703), self-efficacy (OR = 1.213, 95% CI 1.012-1.454), unpredictability (OR = 0.845, 95% CI 0.720-0.990), occupational environment (OR = 0.787, 95% CI 0.625-0.990), and family environment (OR = 0.798, 95% CI 0.643-0.990) influence the RRTW of HNC patients who have not returned to work. Educational level (OR = 62.196, 95% CI 63.307-68.567), children's status (OR = 0.058, 95% CI 1.004-2.547), self-efficacy (OR = 1.544, 95% CI 3.010-8.715), unpredictability (OR = 0.445, 95% CI 1.271-2.280), and psychological status (OR = 0.340, 95% CI 1.141-2.401) influence the RRTW of HNC patients who have returned to work. CONCLUSION: Children's status, education level, self-efficacy, illness uncertainty, and psychosocial adjustment are crucial to RRTW. This study provides a theoretical basis for formulating intervention measures aimed at improving the RRTW of patients.
