ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Although there is a wealth of evidence indicating the enduring consequences of childhood emotional maltreatment (CEM) on social and relational functioning across life stages, little known about how CEM affects marital attitudes in emerging adulthood, particularly among rural first-generation college students (rural FGCS) at the critical stage of developing romantic relationships. OBJECTIVE: To explore whether differential patterns of CEM existed among rural FGCS in China during emerging adulthood. Furthermore, the study aims to examine the potential differences in the chain mediating role of CEM on the pathway to adulthood marital attitudes across different CEM profiles. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Using a cluster sampling approach, a total of 3848 rural first-generation college freshmen (males = 39.2 %, mean age = 18.42 years) were recruited from three universities in China. METHODS: Latent profile analysis was utilized to identify potential patterns of CEM using Mplus version 7.4. Structural equation modeling and multigroup comparisons were then performed to investigate the association between CEM and attitudes towards marriage in emerging adulthood, utilizing AMOS 24.0. RESULTS: Three profiles of CEM was identified among rural FGCS: a low-CEM group (51.87 %), a moderate-CEM group (36.69 %), and a severe-CEM group (11.44 %). The association between CEM and adulthood marital attitudes was mediated by core self-evaluation and meaning in life. However, the mediation effects varied across the three CEM profiles. In the low-CEM group, core self-evaluation and meaning in life were observed to partially mediate the negative association between CEM and adulthood marital attitudes. On the other hand, in the moderate-CEM and severe-CEM groups, the relationship between CEM and adulthood marital attitudes was fully mediated by core self-evaluation. CONCLUSIONS: The study's findings suggest that CEM is a significant predictor of marital attitudes among rural FGCS during emerging adulthood, with the severity of emotional neglect and abuse being the primary distinguishing factor between different CEM profiles. Core self-evaluation plays an important role in this relationship. Future clinical interventions could benefit from focusing on enhancing core self-evaluation and meaning in life, particularly for those with CEM experiences.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Monitoring resident trainees' patient outcomes is essential to improving surgical performance; however, resident-specific follow-up is rarely provided in the current surgical training environment. Whether there is a correlation between individual resident's surgical performance and patients' clinical outcomes remains undefined. In this study, we aimed to use risk-adjusted patient outcomes as an educational tool to track individual surgical trainee performance. STUDY DESIGN: American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) appendectomy and partial colectomy operations (2013-2021) were examined. Residents performing ≥25 operations were included. The primary outcome was ACS NSQIP-defined morbidity adjusted using estimated probability of morbidity. Observed-to-expected ratios (O/E) of morbidity measured overall performance and risk-adjusted cumulative sum (RA-CUSUM) methodology represented surgical resident's performance over time. SETTING: Academic quaternary care institution. PARTICIPANTS: Highest-ranking surgical resident participating in an operation and included in Quality In-Training Initiative. RESULTS: A total of 449 operations were examined. 12 residents performed 343 appendectomy operations. 7 residents (29.3 ± 5.1 operations each) did not have any postoperative morbidity and demonstrated better-than-expected patient outcomes. Three residents did not have morbidity after their seventh/eleventh/fifteenth appendectomies. Two residents (case volume 29, 33) had an O/E ratio > 3. Partial colectomy (n = 106) performed by 4 residents had 2 residents (case volume 30, 26) with better-than-expected outcomes and 2 with worse-than-expected (case volume 25, 25). CONCLUSION: Longitudinal monitoring of postoperative patient outcomes provides an opportunity for trainee self-reflection and system examination. RA-CUSUM methodology offers sequential monitoring allowing for early evaluation and intervention when RA-CUSUM results for a trainee demonstrate higher-than-expected morbidity.

Integrating work and family life is a relevant concern, especially for women in the banking industry. While the impact of job characteristics on work-family conflict is well-documented, the moderating role of core self-evaluations (CSE) remains underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the role of CSE in moderating the relationship between job characteristics and work-family conflict among married female bank employees in Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 245 married female bank employees in Enugu state. Participants were assessed using the Core Self-Evaluation, Job Characteristics, and Work-Family Conflict Scales. Pearson correlation analysis and path coefficient evaluation were utilised to test the study's hypotheses. Job characteristics, notably autonomy, feedback, skill variety, task identity, and task significance, influence work-family conflict across three dimensions: behaviour-based, strain-based, and time-based. Notably, CSE emerged as a significant moderator, with its influence varying depending on the job characteristics. The findings highlight the importance of considering both job characteristics and individual psychological attributes in addressing work-family conflicts. Organisations should adopt a multidimensional, individual-centred approach, recognising the intertwined roles of job factors and personal evaluations in shaping employees' work-life balance experiences.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment, difficulty performing basic activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental ADLs (IADLs), depression, and fatigue are common among individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). Some associations between these symptoms are known; however, many of their relationships remain unclear. This study investigated the contributions of subjective and objective cognition, depressive symptom severity, and fatigue on ADLs and IADLs. METHODS: Participants (N = 217) were individuals with MS from a comprehensive MS center, participating in a larger study characterizing upper extremity function in MS. Outcome measures of ADL and IADL abilities were the Functional Status Index-Assistance (FSI-A) and Functional Status Index-Difficulty (FSI-D) and the Test D'évaluation Des Membres Supérieurs de Personnes Âgées (TEMPA). Predictors were objective cognition (Symbol Digit Modalities Test; SDMT), subjective cognition (Performance Scales©-Cognition; PS-C), depressive symptom severity (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale; CES-D-10), and fatigue (Modified Fatigue Impact Scale; MFIS-5). Correlations were conducted, followed by hierarchal linear regressions. The SDMT and PS-C were entered into separate models. RESULTS: After controlling for demographics, the SDMT significantly predicted the TEMPA and FSI-A, while the PS-C predicted only the FSI-D. The CES-D-10 predicted the FSI-D even after accounting for PS-C and SDMT, while the MFIS-5 only predicted the FSI-D when the SDMT was included. Neither the CES-D-10 nor MFIS-5 significantly predicted the FSI-A or TEMPA. CONCLUSIONS: The way an individual with MS perceived their symptoms significantly contributed to their reported difficulty with functional tasks, while only their objective cognitive functioning predicted ADL and IADL performance and the level of assistance they would require.

ABSTRACT

The Australian healthcare sector is a complex mix of government departments, associations, providers, professionals, and consumers. Cybersecurity attacks, which have recently increased, challenge the sector in many ways; however, the best approaches for the sector to manage the threat are unclear. This study will report on a semi-structured focus group conducted with five representatives from the Australian healthcare and computer security sectors. An analysis of this focus group transcript yielded four themes: 1) the challenge of securing the Australian healthcare landscape; 2) the financial challenges of cybersecurity in healthcare; 3) balancing privacy and transparency; 4) education and regulation. The results indicate the need for sector-specific tools to empower the healthcare sector to mitigate cybersecurity threats, most notably using a self-evaluation tool so stakeholders can proactively prepare for incidents. Despite the vast amount of research into cybersecurity, little has been conducted on proactive cybersecurity approaches where security weaknesses are identified weaknesses before they occur.

ABSTRACT

(1) Objectives: A divergence in self- and preceptor-evaluations of clinical skills has been noted during Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs). The goal of this study was to determine the domains of overestimation of clinical skills by students during their APPE rotations. (2) Methods: Preceptor-assigned grades for APPE rotations from 2017-2022 were analyzed to identify instances of letter grade B or lower. The self- and preceptor-evaluations of APPE rotation were compared to determine the domains of divergence in evaluation between students and preceptors. (3) Results: Between 2017 and 2022, 305 student APPE rotations were graded as B or lower (~14%) by the preceptors. A statistically significant difference was noted between self- and preceptor-assigned letter grades across all practice settings including ambulatory patient care, community pharmacy, general medicine patient care, hospital/health system pharmacy, and special population patient care APPE rotations. In addition, examining the self- and preceptor evaluation rubric for these rotations revealed a statistically significant overestimation of clinical skills by students in all 9 domains of APPE evaluation. Finally, the divergence in the rating of clinical skills between student- and preceptor evaluation was found to be highest in the domains of planning and follow-up of patient care, disease knowledge, and communication with patients. (4) Conclusions: Students who fail to exhibit exemplary practice readiness during APPEs tend to overestimate their clinical skills in all domains of APPE evaluation. The results from our study support the need for additional avenues to assist in the identification of deficits in student learning before APPEs to increase their self-awareness (metacognition).

BACKGROUND: Nursing students are prone to sleep problems that affect their core self-evaluations. However, little attention has been paid to the specific roles of emotion regulation (including cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression) and resilience in this process. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore 1) the direct effect of sleep problems on core self-evaluations among nursing students; 2) the chain-mediating effect of cognitive reappraisal and resilience on the relationship between sleep problems and core self-evaluations; 3) the moderating effect of expressive suppression on the direct relationship between sleep problems and core self-evaluations; and 4) the moderating effect of expressive suppression on the indirect relationship between sleep problems affecting core self-evaluations through resilience. METHODS: A total of 345 nursing students completed a survey conducted between September and October 2022. Data was analyzed using descriptive analysis, Fisher exact test, Kruskal-Wallis H test, Spearman correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis. Additionally, the SPSS PROCESS V4.0 plug-in was used to verify the moderated chain-mediating effect. RESULTS: Sleep problems directly affected core self-evaluations among nursing students. Cognitive reappraisal and resilience played a partial chain-mediating role in the relationship between sleep problems and core self-evaluations, with expressive suppression having a direct moderating effect. CONCLUSIONS: Opportunities exist for enhancing the core self-evaluations of nursing students by addressing their sleep problems, promoting cognitive reappraisal strategies, and increasing resilience. Additionally, encouraging expressive suppression can mitigate the negative impact of sleep problems on nursing students' core self-evaluations.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the role of college students' core self-evaluation in the association between extracurricular physical exercise and academic stress, and to provide a reference and basis for effectively alleviating current college students' academic stress. Methods: A stratified cluster random sampling method was used to conduct an online survey using the China College Student Mental Health Screening Scale, the Core Self-Esteem Scale, and a self-developed questionnaire for 1,249 college students from 8 junior colleges in Jiangsu Province, China, in January 2023, and analyses were conducted using bivariate correlation and mediation effect tests. Results: More than half of the students were worried about lagging behind other students in their studies and worrying about exams, as well as more than half of the students had <2 h of extracurricular physical exercise per week in terms of academic stress. Significant correlations were found between extracurricular physical exercise time and core self-evaluation (r = 0.225, p < 0.01), academic stress (r = -0.317, p < 0.01), and between core self-evaluation and academic stress (r =-0.371, p < 0.01). Extracurricular physical exercise had a negative predictive effect on academic stress (effect = -0.306, 95%CI: -0.361~-0.251) and partially through the mediating path of core self-evaluation, (effect = -0.067, 95%CI: -0.091~-0.046), with a mediating effect of 21.9%. Among them, the mediating effect of core self-evaluation was highest in "worrying about lagging behind other students in their studies" and "worrying about exams", which accounted for 24.4% and 24.3% respectively. Conclusion: Currently, college students have different degrees of academic stress; extracurricular physical exercise can reduce academic stress through direct effects, and also through the indirect effect of improving the level of core self-evaluation, and active extracurricular physical exercise has become an important way to promote students' physical and mental health.

ABSTRACT

Evaluating the experiences of persons with spinal cord injury (PwSCI) regarding their transitions in care and changes in health, function, and quality of life is complex, fragmented, and involves multiple tools and measures. A staged protocol was implemented with PwSCI and relevant expert stakeholders initially exploring and selecting existing measures or tools through a modified Delphi process, followed by choosing one of two options. The options were to either support the use of the 10 selected tools from the Delphi method or to co-develop one unique condensed tool with relevant measures to evaluate all four domains. The stakeholders chose to co-develop one tool to be used by persons with SCI to monitor their transition experiences across settings and care providers. This includes any issues with care or support they needed to address at the time of discharge from acute care or rehabilitation and in the community at 3, 6, and 12 months or longer post-discharge. Once developed, the tool was made available online for the final stage of the protocol, which proposes that the tool be reliability tested prior to its launch, followed by validation testing by PwSCI.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious psychiatric illness associated with significant medical and psychiatric comorbidity and impairment. Theoretical models of AN and self-report studies suggest that negative self-evaluation (i.e., low self-esteem) is related to the development and maintenance of AN. The goal of this study was to extend findings from self-report methodology using a neurocognitive task that probes self-evaluation implicitly and explicitly. METHOD: We compared female adolescent and adult patients with AN (n = 35) and healthy controls (HC, n = 38) on explicit (i.e., endorsement of words as self-relevant), implicit (recall, recognition, reaction time), and composite (i.e., valence index, bias score, drift rates) indices of self-evaluation. We applied a drift-diffusion model to compute the drift rates, reflecting participants' decision-making process as to whether words were self-relevant. The association between self-evaluation indices and eating disorder severity was examined. RESULTS: There were significant Group × Condition interaction effects for all explicit and implicit measures (all p's ≤ .01), where the AN group endorsed, recalled, and recognized more negative relative to positive words than HC. The AN group had more negative valence index and bias scores, and slower drift rate away from negative words, reflecting more negative self-evaluation. The finding for recall was attenuated when individuals with depression were excluded. Measures of self-evaluation bias were not related to eating disorder severity. DISCUSSION: Using a neurocognitive approach that includes explicit and implicit indices of bias, results suggest that patients with AN have more negative self-evaluation. Due to the cross-sectional design, additional studies are needed to further evaluate directionality. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE: Negative self-evaluation/low self-esteem is thought to contribute to eating disorder symptoms. Findings of this study using a neurocognitive task to probe self-evaluation suggested that individuals with anorexia nervosa have more negative self-evaluation, reflected by endorsing and remembering more negative (than positive) words compared to healthy controls, and doing so faster. Targeting the construct of negative self-evaluation in treatment of AN may be warranted.

ABSTRACT

This study explored demographic, ideological, self-rating and personality traits correlates of the Dark Tetrad (DT4) which measures Narcissism (Special), Machiavellianism (Crafty), Psychopathy (Wild), and Sadism (Mean) traits. In total, 447 adults completed three tests: a bright-side, work-related, personality test (HPTI: High Performance Type Indicator), a dark-side test (Short Dark Tetrad) and a number of self-ratings. Correlations and regressions showed that all four dark traits were associated with low Adjustment (Neuroticism), but also with high Risk-Taking and Competitiveness (low Agreeableness). The various measures accounted for a third of the variance in explaining the Mean (Sadistic) score, and 40 % for Special (Narcissism). Trait Competitiveness was most closely associated with all four dark traits.

ABSTRACT

Humble leadership has gained attention in recent years due to its potential impact on employee performance. This study explores the association between humble leadership and follower innovative behavior by investigating the moderating role of core self-evaluation (CSE) and the mediating role of leader-member exchange (LMX). The study uses data from 328 followers and their immediate leaders to test a mediated moderation model. Results show that there is a favorable association between humble leadership and LMX and followers' innovative behavior, particularly pronounced for followers who possess lower levels of CSE. The findings suggest that humble leaders should focus their development efforts on followers with low CSE to achieve complementarity congruity and improved innovation. This research enhances the existing body of knowledge by emphasizing the significance of comprehending the functions of relational procedures and the psychological resources of followers in determining the effectiveness of humble leadership. These findings have practical implications for organizations seeking to enhance their leadership effectiveness and followers' innovative behavior.

The study aims to investigate the multiple mediating roles of core self-evaluation and sense of school belonging in the relationship between father-child attachment and academic burnout in college students. A sample of 418 college students completed the father-child attachment scale, the scale of sense of school belonging, core self-evaluation scale, and academic burnout scale. After controlling for variables such as mother-child attachment, gender, age, and grade, the results showed: (1) father-child attachment was significantly and negatively correlated with academic burnout, and positively correlated with core self-evaluation and sense of school belonging; both core self-evaluation and sense of school belonging were significantly and negatively correlated with academic burnout. (2) The multiple mediating model of father-child attachment influencing academic burnout in college students was established. Both core self-evaluation and sense of school belonging played a partial mediating role between father-child attachment and academic burnout. The direct effect of father-child attachment on academic burnout accounts for 33.3% of the total effect. The indirect effects of core self-evaluation and sense of school belonging between father-child attachment and academic burnout account for 50.0 and 16.7% of the total effect, respectively. These findings identify the internal mechanisms through which father-child attachment affects academic burnout in college students from personal traits and interpersonal perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Self-rated health (SRH) offers insights into the evolving health demographics of an ageing population. AIM: To assess change in SRH from old age to very old age and their associations with health and well-being factors, and to investigate the association between SRH and survival. METHODS: All participants in the MONICA 1999 re-examination born before 1940 (n = 1595) were included in the Silver-MONICA baseline cohort. The Silver-MONICA follow-up started in 2016 included participants in the Silver-MONICA baseline cohort aged 80 years or older. Data on SRH was available for 1561 participants at baseline with 446 of them also participating in the follow-up. The follow-up examination included a wide variety of measurements and tests. FINDINGS: Most participants rated their health as "Quite good" (54.5 %) at baseline. Over the study period, 42.6 % had stable SRH, 40.6 % had declined, and 16.8 % had improved. Changes in SRH were at follow-up significantly associated with age, pain, nutrition, cognition, walking aid use, self-paced gait speed, lower extremity strength, independence in activities of daily living, weekly physical exercise, outdoor activity, participation in organized activities, visiting others, morale, and depressive symptoms. SRH at baseline was significantly associated with survival (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates associations between changes in SRH and a multitude of health- and wellbeing-related factors, as well as a relation between survival and SRH, accentuating their relevance within the ageing population.

Childhood abuse is a significant risk factor for suicidal ideation. However, the underlying mediation mechanism necessitates further exploration. This study investigated the mediating role of core self-evaluation and negative emotions in the relationship between childhood abuse and suicide ideation in young adults. A sample of 3103 college students from 11 universities across 8 provinces in China was analyzed. Childhood abuse, core self-evaluation, negative emotions, and suicidal ideation were assessed using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ-CF), Core Self-Evaluation Scale, Affect Scale, and Beck Suicidal Ideation Scale (BSI-CV), respectively. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 19.0 and SPSS Macro Process. We found that high scores for childhood abuse were associated with elevated levels of suicidal ideation, whereas low scores for core self-evaluation were closely linked to heightened levels of negative emotions and suicidal ideation. Furthermore, core self-evaluation and negative emotions mediated the relationship between childhood abuse and suicidal ideation through three significant paths. The results demonstrate that childhood abuse can directly impact suicidal ideation in young adulthood and indirectly influence suicidal ideation by affecting core self-evaluation and negative emotions. They suggest that addressing core self-evaluation and negative emotions in individuals who have experienced childhood abuse may help prevent or treat suicidal ideation.

Background: Social isolation can be particularly challenging for individuals with high autistic traits who struggle with social interactions. The COVID-19 pandemic led to increased isolation, exacerbating stress for those who may have difficulty in connecting with others. This study aimed to explore the relationship between autistic traits and stress associated with social isolation. Methods: A sample of 1597 Chinese adults completed measures of autistic traits, the stress of social isolation, psychological inflexibility and core self-evaluation, during an epidemic prevention and control period of COVID-19 in Chongqing, China. Measures included the Autism-Spectrum Quotient, Coronavirus Stress Measure, Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II, and Core Self-Evaluation Scale. Results: Autistic traits were positively correlated with the stress of social isolation, which was mediated by the chain effect of core self-evaluation and psychological inflexibility. individuals with high autistic traits reported significantly higher stress than individuals with low autistic traits. Limitations: This was a cross-sectional study, which limits causal inference. In addition, data were self-reported, which may cause methodological effects. Finally, this study was conducted during China's quarantine policy and external validation of the findings is required. Conclusions: Autistic traits are positively associated with the stress of social isolation. Autistic traits affected core self-evaluation first, and psychological inflexibility subsequently, leading to the stress of social isolation. individuals with high autistic traits tended to experience higher levels of stress during pandemic quarantines. The findings provide useful evidence for developing interventions and implementing preventive measures to reduce stress in individuals with high autistic traits and autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Currently, little evidence supports the notion that improved practical skills through simulation education are reflected in actual clinical practice and ultimately lead to positive outcomes for participants. However, by clarifying the relationship between the simulation foundation and its practicality, insights can be gained to develop educational programs to improve clinical reasoning skills. However, no clear scale is currently available in Japan. AIMS: To create a valid Japanese version of the clinical reasoning skills self-evaluation scale and evaluate its reliability and validity. METHODS: This instrument design study included 580 nursing students and nurses surveyed online from February to March 2023. The clinical reasoning skills self-evaluation scale was translated into Japanese using a back-translation method, and semantic equivalence and content validity were assessed. The content validity index was assessed using a pilot test involving 26 clinical nurses, 25 nursing students, and an expert panel. Validity and reliability were tested using a convenience sample of 580 nursing students and nurses. Reliability was assessed using internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Construct validity was assessed using confirmatory factor analysis. RESULTS: Cronbach's alpha for all dimensions was >0.7, and the questionnaire showed acceptable internal consistency. Test-retest reliability was evaluated using the intraclass correlation coefficient (0.674-0.797, all dimensions); the lowest value at a 95% confidence interval was 0.504 (at least moderate reliability). CONCLUSION: Our scale has acceptable validity and reliability. It may help in clinical reasoning skill assessment for nurses and nursing students and aid in examining and supporting these skills.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is unpredictable and can severely impair patients' quality of life. Patients with CSU need a convenient, user-friendly platform to complete patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) on their mobile devices. CRUSE® , the Chronic Urticaria Self Evaluation app, aims to address this unmet need. METHODS: CRUSE® was developed by an international steering committee of urticaria specialists. Priorities for the app based on recent findings in CSU were defined to allow patients to track and record their symptoms and medication use over time and send photographs. The CRUSE® app collects patient data such as age, sex, disease onset, triggers, medication, and CSU characteristics that can be sent securely to physicians, providing real-time insights. Additionally, CRUSE® contains PROMs to assess disease activity and control, which are individualised to patient profiles and clinical manifestations. RESULTS: CRUSE® was launched in Germany in March 2022 and is now available for free in 17 countries. It is adapted to the local language and displays a country-specific list of available urticaria medications. English and Ukrainian versions are available worldwide. From July 2022 to June 2023, 25,710 observations were documented by 2540 users; 72.7% were females, with a mean age of 39.6 years. At baseline, 93.7% and 51.3% of users had wheals and angioedema, respectively. Second-generation antihistamines were used in 74.0% of days. CONCLUSIONS: The initial data from CRUSE® show the wide use and utility of effectively tracking patients' disease activity and control, paving the way for personalised CSU management.

ABSTRACT

Advancement in learning grammar and using it practically is one of the challenges of English as foreign learners (EFL) learners. Its progression may be expedited or slowed down by a variety of causes. Among the crucial factors, the possible effects of self-evaluation, teacher support, and L2 grit were still untouched which is the target of the current research. In so doing, 86 EFL students at the intermediate level were divided into two groups (i.e., experimental group and control group). The students in the control group (CG) are exposed to normal education, whereas learners in experimental group (EG) get extra instruction to practice self-evaluation and L2 Grit. Moreover, the emphasis on the teacher's position as a facilitator and supporter was more prominent in the EG. Based on data screening which was completed via one-way ANCOVA, learners in EG were more successful in grammar assessment due to the treatment. Further research avenues and educational implications were elaborated upon.

ABSTRACT

Whereas prior research has found that people are influenced by both internal (e.g., dimensional) and external (e.g., social) comparative information in academic contexts, we experimentally examined the influence of such comparisons in a health fitness context. Participants engaged in "physical and mental fitness" tasks (e.g., performing sit-ups, memorizing words) and were randomly assigned to receive (1) social comparative feedback indicating their physical or mental fitness was better or worse than their peers or (2) dimensional comparative feedback indicating their performance in a target domain (e.g., mental fitness) was better or worse than a referent domain (e.g., physical fitness). Results showed that participants who made upward comparisons had lower fitness self-evaluations and more negative (less positive) emotional reactions to the feedback for the target domain, with the effect being nominally stronger for social than dimensional comparisons and for mental than physical fitness. Findings are discussed in the context of comparison-based models and health behavior theories.
