ABSTRACT

Although it is generally held that gastrointestinal (GI) signals are related to emotions, direct evidence for such a link is currently lacking. One of the reasons why the internal milieu of the GI system is poorly investigated is because visceral organs are difficult to access and monitor. To directly measure the influence of endoluminal markers of GI activity on the emotional experience, we asked a group of healthy male participants to ingest a pill that measured pH, pressure, and temperature of their GI tract while they watched video clips that consistently induced disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, or a control neutral state. In addition to the objective physiological markers of GI activity, subjective ratings of perceived emotions and visceral (i.e. gastric, respiratory and cardiac) sensations were recorded, as well as changes in heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (HRV) and spontaneous eyes blinks as non-gastric behavioral and autonomic markers of the emotional experience. We found that when participants observed fearful and disgusting video clips, they reported to perceive not only cardiac and respiratory sensations but also gastric sensations, such as nausea. Moreover, we found that there was a clear relation between the physiology of the stomach and the perceived emotions. Specifically, when disgusting video clips were displayed, the more acidic the pH, the more participants reported feelings of disgust and fear; the less acidic the pH, the more they reported happiness. Complementing the results found in the deep gastric realm, we found that disgusting stimuli induced a significant increase in HRV compared to the neutral scenarios, and together with fearful video clips a decrease in HR. Our findings suggest that gastric signals contribute to unique emotional states and that ingestible pills may open new avenues for exploring the deep-body physiology of emotions.

ABSTRACT

Early changes in sensory quality of phenols-rich virgin olive oil (VOO) and their relationship with the chemical changes are less studied in the literature. Therefore, the objective of this study was to propose a predictive model of dynamics of sensory changes based on specific chemical markers. The evolution of the sensory quality of phenol-rich VOOs from Tuscan cultivars stored under optimal storage conditions (i.e., absence of light, no O2 exposure, low temperature) was investigated using a multi-step methodological approach combining sensory (official sensory analysis (so-called Panel Test), Descriptive Analysis and Temporal Dominance of Sensation) and chemical measurements. The sensory map from descriptive data was related to the phenolic and volatile profiles, measured using HPLC-DAD and HS-SPME-GC-MS, respectively. A predictive model of the sensory changes over storage based on chemical compounds was developed. Results showed that very early changes involving phenolic and volatile compounds profiles occur in VOOs stored under optimal storage conditions, which turn in changes in sensory properties evaluated by the official panel test, the descriptive analysis and the temporal dominance of sensation. Furthermore, a chemical marker of sensory dynamics of oils during storage was identified as the ratio between two groups of secoiridoids. The proposed model, supported by the mentioned chemical marker, has the potential of improving the control of sensory changes in phenols-rich virgin olive oils during storage in optimal conditions.

ABSTRACT

We adopt Rapley's (2008) concept of distributed decision making to explore the role of the body in people's decisions to seek medical care. We conducted in-depth interviews with patients diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (AF) who were taking long-term anticoagulants to prevent stroke. We interviewed seventeen patients recruited from English anticoagulant clinics using the biographic-narrative-interpretive method, and conducted thematic, structural and metaphorical analyses. This pluralistic analysis focused on how distributed decision-making was enacted through a range of socio-material, relational and embodied practices. Participants told how they experienced AF-related sensations that fluctuated in intensity and form. Some had no symptoms at all; others experienced sudden incapacitation - these experiences shaped different journeys towards seeking medical help. We draw on work by Mol (2002) to show how the body was differently observed, experienced and done across contexts as the narratives unfolded. We show that as part of a relational assemblage, involving social, material and technological actors over time, a new body-in-need-of-help was enacted and medical help sought. This body-in-need-of-help was collectively discussed, interpreted and experienced through distribution of body parts, fluids and technological representations to shape decisions. RAPLEY T., 2008. ABSTRACT

Understanding the somatosensory system and its abnormalities requires the development of devices that can accurately stimulate the human skin. New methods for assessing the somatosensory system can enhance the diagnosis, treatments, and prognosis for individuals with somatosensory impairments. Therefore, the design of NeuroSense, a tactile stimulator that evokes three types of daily life sensations (touch, air and vibration) is described in this work. The prototype aims to evoke quantitative assessments to evaluate the functionality of the somatosensory system and its abnormal conditions that affect the quality of life. In addition, the device has proven to have varying intensities and onset latencies that produces somatosensory evoked potentials and energy desynchronization on somatosensory cortex.

ABSTRACT

The present study aimed to explore the similarity and difference in taste enhancement properties of N-succinyl-L-phenylalanine (N-Suc-Phe), N-succinyl-L-tryptophan (N-Suc-Trp), and N-succinyl-L-tyrosine (N-Suc-Tyr) using temporal dominance of sensations (TDS), temporal check-all-that-apply (TCATA), and time-intensity (TI) techniques. Meanwhile, leading taste enhancers in the market, such as N'-[(2,4-dimethoxyphenyl)methyl]-N-(2-pyridin-2-ylethyl) oxamide (DE) was chosen to conduct a comparative analysis with the aforementioned three compounds. Findings from TDS and TCATA revealed that all compounds under investigation notably enhanced umami and saltiness while reducing bitterness in a concentration-dependent fashion (0.25-1 mg/L). Additionally, the TI results indicated that the duration of umami was extended by 50-75%, and the duration of bitterness was decreased by 20-40% upon addition of DE, N-Suc-Phe, N-Suc-Trp, and N-Suc-Tyr (1 mg/L). Among these, N-Suc-Trp was identified as the most effective in augmenting umami and mitigating bitterness, whereas N-Suc-Tyr excelled in enhancing saltiness intensity. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) pinpointed the carbon­carbon double bond as the important structure influencing the enhancement of umami and reduction of bitterness, whereas the phenolic hydroxyl group was identified as critical for enhancing saltiness. This investigation provided insights into the different characteristics of taste enhancement of N-Suc-AAs and the impact of chemical structure on such specificity.

ABSTRACT

We investigated whether central or peripheral limitations to oxygen uptake elicit different respiratory sensations and whether dyspnea on exertion (DOE) provokes unpleasantness and negative emotions in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). 48 patients were categorized based on their cardiac output (Q̇c)/oxygen uptake (V̇O2) slope and stroke volume (SV) reserve during an incremental cycling test. 15 were classified as centrally limited and 33 were classified as peripherally limited. Ratings of perceived breathlessness (RPB) and unpleasantness (RPU) were assessed (Borg 0-10 scale) during a 20 W cycling test. 15 respiratory sensations statements (1-10 scale) and 5 negative emotions statements (1-10) were subsequently rated. RPB (Central: 3.5±2.0 vs. Peripheral: 3.4±2.0, p=0.86), respiratory sensations, or negative emotions were not different between groups (p>0.05). RPB correlated (p<0.05) with RPU (r=0.925), "anxious" (r=0.610), and "afraid" (r=0.383). While DOE provokes elevated levels of negative emotions, DOE and respiratory sensations seem more related to a common mechanism rather than central and/or peripheral limitations in HFpEF.

ABSTRACT

An online survey was conducted to show that most respondents preferred sports drinks with sweet and fruity characteristics. Eleven sports drinks with higher consumers' preferences were further selected for aroma and taste evaluation. Temporal dominance of sensations analysis showed that fruity and fresh attributes were dominant, while sour and fruity sweet were dominant tastes during consumption. ß-Damascenone, ß-ionone, and linalool contributing to floral perception, γ-decalactone, ethyl cinnamate, and isoamyl acetate contributing to fruity perception, and menthol contributing to fresh perception were confirmed by odor activity value analysis. Running affected the nasal air flow and the saliva secretion, resulting in the flavor perception changing from fruity sweet, sweet, and fruity to sour because the recognition threshold decreased for sweet, fruity, floral, and fresh flavors and increased for saltiness, astringency, and sour tastes.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), characterized by problems regarding storage and/or voiding of urine, is known to significantly increase with age. Effective communication between the lower urinary tract and the central nervous system (CNS) is essential for the optimal function of this system, and heavily relies on the efficient interaction between the bladder urothelium and the afferent nerve fibers situated in close proximity to the urothelium within the lamina propria. METHODS: We aimed to quantify aging-related differences in the expression of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP, an established marker for sensory nerve fibers) in the trigonal mucosal layers of young (3-4 months) and aged (25-30 months) rats. We evaluated trigonal tissue from 3 animals per age group. Tissue was serially sectioned at 10 µm and stained for CGRP. Images were taken along the full length of the tissue. For each image we computed the total CGRP-positive area (µm2) and the median value for each animal was used for further analysis. RESULTS: Upon statistical analysis the aged rats show a significantly lower CGRP-positive area compared to young rats (P=0.0049). These results indicate that aging has a negative effect on the area of CGRP-positive signal in the trigone. CONCLUSION: The structural and functional integrity of the sensory web in the trigonum of rats is negatively affected by the aging process, potentially leading to impaired communication between the bladder urothelium the CNS. Consequently, these perturbations in the sensory system may contribute to the pathogenesis or exacerbation LUTS.

ABSTRACT

Background/Objectives: This study examined the impact of spasticity-related unpleasant sensations (pain, heaviness, stiffness) on various domains of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) and psychosocial well-being in individuals affected by stroke or traumatic brain injury (TBI). The primary aim is to explore how these sensations affect daily activities, participation, and overall quality of life, guided by the comprehensive framework of the ICF. Methods: Utilizing a secondary analysis of data from a cohort undergoing Botulinum toxin type-A treatment for spasticity post-stroke or TBI, we developed and administered an ad-hoc questionnaire focusing on ICF domains such as body function, activities and participation, and psychosocial aspects such as mood, relationship, social life, motivation, and sleep quality. Spearman rho correlation was applied to assess the relationship between unpleasant sensations and functional as well as psychosocial outcomes among 151 participants. Results: This study identified significant correlations between the severity of unpleasant sensations and limitations in daily functioning, particularly in activities of daily living and mobility. Furthermore, an impactful association was identified between increased unpleasant sensations and deterioration in psychosocial well-being, notably in mood and sleep quality. Conclusions: These findings advocate for a person-centered approach in spasticity management, emphasizing the integration of sensory impairment strategies into rehabilitation to enhance functional outcomes and quality of life. Such an approach aims to improve functional outcomes and enhance the quality of life for individuals experiencing spasticity post-stroke or TBI. Future directions include targeted interventions to alleviate these sensations, support better rehabilitation results and improve patient experiences.

ABSTRACT

This special issue explores the evolving landscape of medical semiotics of conventional biomedicine. With expansion we refer to the range of phenomena considered signs or symptoms of underlying disease, but also the growing anthropological attention to the medical sign system in ways which reach beyond classic semiotic analysis. The articles testify to the expansion in terms of empirical foci and theoretical contributions. As part of the introduction, we discuss three modes of reading symptoms within medical anthropology: the hermeneutic, material, and critical readings, all highlighting the crucial role of medical anthropology in understanding the biosocial and cultural dimensions of medical semiotics.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: This study aims to evaluate the relationship between somatic sensations, impaired vision, and cognitive performance using the factor structure convergence insufficiency symptoms survey questionnaire in university undergraduate and post-graduate students. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Centre-based and questionnaire-based. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Subjects were recruited from a university. First, an e-Survey was conducted with the help of Google form and distributed through WhatsApp and Gmail to carry out the survey. The age group of participants was ranged from 18 to 30 years. A total number of 561 responses was received during the data collection period. As per the exclusion criteria, 230 responses were excluded from the study. Out of 331 students, 154 were male while 177 were female. Out of 331 participants, 213 were undergraduates and 118 were postgraduate's students. RESULTS: A total of 331 participants took part in the study. The minimum age was 18 years and the maximum age was 30 years. The mean age of the participants was 23.40 ± 2.42. Among all students, 23.81% had somatic sensations followed by 10.49% had impaired vision, and 16.31% had a poor cognitive function. The correlation between somatic sensations-impaired visions was a moderate positive correlation and a strong positive correlation between somatic sensations-cognitive performance and impaired vision-cognitive performance. CONCLUSIONS: A significant relationship between somatic sensations, impaired vision, and cognitive performance was found in the study. The students had more somatic sensations than impaired vision and cognitive performance.

Objective. Selective neuromodulation of deep brain regions has for a long time only been possible through invasive approaches, because of the steep depth-focality trade-off of conventional non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques.Approach. An approach that has recently emerged for deep NIBS in humans is transcranial Temporal Interference Stimulation (tTIS). However, a crucial aspect for its potential wide use is to ensure that it is tolerable, compatible with efficient blinding and safe.Main results. Here, we show the favorable tolerability and safety profiles and the robust blinding efficiency of deep tTIS targeting the striatum or hippocampus by leveraging a large dataset (119 participants, 257 sessions), including young and older adults and patients with traumatic brain injury. tTIS-evoked sensations were generally rated as 'mild', were equivalent in active and placebo tTIS conditions and did not enable participants to discern stimulation type.Significance. Overall, tTIS emerges as a promising tool for deep NIBS for robust double-blind, placebo-controlled designs.

ABSTRACT

Reheating chicken soup is a common culinary practice in daily life. To investigate the impact of reheating frequency on the sensory quality of chicken soup, temporal dominance of sensations (TDS) and multi-TDS were used to characterize changes in dominant sensory attributes during consumption. Additionally, E-nose and E-tongue were utilized to analyze differences in aroma and taste profiles. The alterations in sensory properties were further elucidated by analyzing variations in amino acids, volatile compounds. The findings revealed that there was no significant disparity between fresh soup and heating. However, saltiness and umami, as the most prominent dominant characteristics, intensified with increasing reheating cycles. This can be attributed to an elevation in certain amino acids that contribute to umami perception. Conversely, a reduction in some aldehydes weakened the flavor associated with fat and meat components. Moreover, enlarged oil droplets with uneven distribution within heated soup may account for the heightened greasiness sensation.

ABSTRACT

Among other bodily signals, the perception of sensations arising spontaneously on the skin with no external triggers contributes to body awareness. The topic of spontaneous sensations (SPS) being quite recent in the literature, there is still a debate whether this phenomenon is elicited by peripheral cutaneous units' activity underlying tactile perception or originates directly from central mechanisms. In a first experiment, we figured that, if SPS depended on peripheral afferents, their perception on the glabrous hand should relate to the hand tactile sensitivity. On the contrary, we found no relationship at all, which led us to envisage the scenario of SPS in the absence of cutaneous units. In a second experiment, we present the case of Julie, a right-hand amputee that could perceive and report SPS arising on her phantom limb syndrome. We found that SPS distribution on the phantom limb followed the same gradient as that observed in control participants, unlike SPS perceived on the intact left hand. Those findings are crucial to the understanding of neural factors determining body awareness through SPS perception and provide insights into the existence of a precise neural gradient underlying somesthesis.

Objective.Sensory feedback is critical for effectively controlling brain-machine interfaces and neuroprosthetic devices. Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is proposed as a technique to induce artificial sensory perceptions in rodents, monkeys, and humans. However, to realize the full potential of SCS as a sensory neuroprosthetic technology, a better understanding of the effect of SCS pulse train parameter changes on sensory detection and discrimination thresholds is necessary.Approach.Here we investigated whether stimulation periodicity impacts rats' ability to detect and discriminate SCS-induced perceptions at different frequencies.Main results.By varying the coefficient of variation (CV) of interstimulus pulse interval, we showed that at lower frequencies, rats could detect highly aperiodic SCS pulse trains at lower amplitudes (i.e. decreased detection thresholds). Furthermore, rats learned to discriminate stimuli with subtle differences in periodicity, and the just-noticeable differences from a highly aperiodic stimulus were smaller than those from a periodic stimulus.Significance.These results demonstrate that the temporal structure of an SCS pulse train is an integral parameter for modulating sensory feedback in neuroprosthetic applications.

BACKGROUND: Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex is an understudied condition of lactation involving emotional dysregulation during letdown or milk ejection. Affected individuals may experience transient feelings of helplessness, melancholy, and general unhappiness. RESEARCH AIM: To evaluate the scope of published literature on Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex. METHOD: Whittemore and Knafl's methodology guided this integrative review. Five databases were searched for primary research, summaries, and editorials on Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex in lactating individuals. Literature searched also included websites, pamphlets, and conference proceedings via Google and Google Scholar. A total of 11 articles, from five different countries, met inclusion criteria for review. RESULTS: Studies on Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex and negative emotional sensations during lactation were synthesized under five conceptual umbrellas: (1) Experiences, Sensations, and Symptom Management; (2) Biological Underpinnings; (3) Influence on Maternal Role and Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy; (4) Support, Understanding, and Awareness; and (5) Reduction and Cessation of Breastfeeding. CONCLUSION: Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex is a neurobiological condition characterized by low mood and negative feelings during milk ejection throughout lactation. Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex is linked to maternal psychological distress and breastfeeding discontinuation. Priority areas for future research include biological origins and interventions aimed at prevention, symptom control, and greater awareness of the condition on a more international scope.

Cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) delivers low-intensity electrical currents to the brain to treat anxiety, depression, and pain. Though CES is considered safe and cost-effective, little is known about side effects emerging across different contexts. Our objective was to investigate how varying physical and cognitive demands impact the frequency and intensity of CES vestibular sensations in a sample of healthy young adults. We used a 2 (stimulation: sham, active) × 2 (physical demand: static sway, dynamic sit-to-stand) × 2 (cognitive demand: single-task remain silent, dual-task count backward) repeated measures design. Vestibular sensations were measured with surveys and wearable sensors capturing balance changes. Active stimulation did not influence reported vestibular sensations. Instead, high physical demand predicted more sensation reports. High cognitive demand, but not active stimulation, predicted postural sway unsteadiness. Significant effects of active stimulation on balance were observed only during the dynamic sit-to-stand transitions. In summary, CES induces vestibular sensations only for a specific outcome under certain circumstances. Our findings imply that consumers can safely maximize the benefits of CES while ensuring they are taking steps to minimize any potential side effects by considering their context and circumstances.

BACKGROUND: Cough is one of the symptoms of the post-COVID-19 condition. However, the factors associated with its development remain unclear. We evaluated the factors associated with chronic cough in the post-COVID-19 condition. METHODS: In this survey, 170 individuals who previously had COVID-19 and were admitted to Aichi Hospital between October 2020 and October 2021 were included. Using self-developed questionnaires and visual analog scales, 19 symptoms, including cough, were assessed. Cough-specific quality of life (QoL), reflux-related symptoms, and abnormal laryngeal sensations were also evaluated. The patients' clinical characteristics and indices, including cough-specific QoL, at admission were extracted from their medical records. Multivariate regression analyses were conducted to determine the factors associated with cough-related outcomes, such as prevalence, QoL, and severity, in the post-COVID-19 condition. RESULTS: The median length (range) of the survey after recovery from COVID-19 was 158 (95-467) days. Cough was prevalent (n = 41, 24 %) and often accompanied by other symptoms, including gastrointestinal symptoms. Cough-specific QoL after recovery was correlated with reflux-related symptoms and abnormal laryngeal sensations. Multivariate analyses revealed that gastrointestinal symptoms, sputum, and chronic cough before contracting COVID-19 are significant predictors of cough-related outcomes in the post-COVID-19 condition. Meanwhile, other indices including cough-specific QoL on the acute phase were not reliable predictors in the post-COVID-19 condition. CONCLUSIONS: Cough during the post-COVID-19 condition had a negative impact on daily life activities. Gastrointestinal symptoms could play a significant role in the pathophysiology of cough in such a condition.

ABSTRACT

Empirical evidence consistently shows that discordance, also called dissociation or discrepancy, between actual physiological (mainly visceral) events and their perceived counterparts is substantial. On the one hand, we typically do not perceive actual visceral events occurring in our bodies; on the other hand, sometimes we do perceive bodily changes that do not really take place. This narrative review presents the available empirical findings on the discordance, and summarizes possible explanations that approach the phenomenon from the viewpoint of evolution, cognitive development, and predictive processing. Also, the role of top-down factors, such as expectations and experiences is discussed. Finally, practically relevant consequences of the discordance are presented using the examples of mind-body practices, the placebo and nocebo phenomenon, and medically unexplained symptoms. It is concluded that the discordance between actual and perceived body changes can have a negative impact on health, mainly through issues with adherence and other behavioral factors. The existence of actual-perceived discordance should be taught and demonstrated in the elementary and high school, as well as in many areas of higher education.

ABSTRACT

Anorectal manometry is one of the motility tests in children performed by pediatric gastroenterologist. It evaluates the motility function of anorectal tract. It is helpful for diagnosing children with constipation, rectal hypersensitivity, fecal incontinence, Hirschsprung disease, anal achalasia, and anorectal malformations. The most common indication to perform anorectal manometry is to diagnose Hirschsprung disease. It is a safe procedure. This paper discusses recent advances and reviews on anorectal motility disorders in children.
