ABSTRACT

The current study aimed to investigate associations of circRNAs and related genetic variants with risk of prostate cancer (PCa) as well as to elucidate biological mechanisms underlying the associations. By using the MiOncoCirc database, we first compared expression levels of circRNAs between 25 paired PCa and adjacent normal tissues to identify risk-associated circRNAs. We then used logistic regression models to evaluate associations between genetic variants in candidate circRNAs and PCa risk among 4662 prostate cancer patients and 3114 healthy controls, and identified circHIBADH rs11973492 as a significant risk-associated variant (odds ratio = 1.20, 95% confidence interval: 1.08-1.34, P = 7.06 × 10 -4) in a dominant genetic model, which altered the secondary structure of the corresponding RNA chain. In the in silico analysis, we found circHIBADH to sponge and silence 21 RNA-binding proteins (RPBs) enriched in the RNA splicing pathway, among which HNRNPA1 was identified and validated as a hub RBP using an external RNA-sequencing data as well as the in-house (four tissue samples) and publicly available single-cell transcriptomes. Additionally, we demonstrated that HNRNPA1 might influence hallmarks including MYC, DNA repair, and E2F target signaling pathways, thereby promoting carcinogenesis. In conclusion, genetic variants in circHIBADH may act as a sponge and inhibitor of RNA splicing-associated RBPs including HNRNPA1, playing an oncogenic role in PCa.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compare the anti-inflammatory, antitumor and anti-bacterial effects of the single extract (in granules) and the prepared drug in pieces of Forsythia Suspense (Lianqiao, a traditional Chinese herbal medicine). METHODS: In zebrafish embryo models of CuSO4 exposure, tail transection and LPS microinjection-induced inflammation, the anti-inflammatory effects of 10 µg/mL DEX, single extract of Forsythia Suspense, and the water extract of the prepared drug (400, 600, and 800 µg/mL) were evaluated by observing neutrophil counts, RT- qPCR, HE staining and survival analysis. Zebrafish embryo models bearing different human tumor cell xenografts were used to assess the anti-tumor effect of the drugs in different dosage forms by fluorescence staining and HE staining. The microbroth dilution method was used to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of the drugs. RESULTS: In the zebrafish embryo models of inflammation, both of the two dosage forms of Forsythia Suspense significantly inhibited neutrophil aggregation, reduced the mRNA expressions of TNF-α, IL-6, P38, Jnk, Erk and P65, and increased the survival rate of zebrafish. They both showed obvious inhibitory effects against xenografts of different human cancer cells including colon cancer cells (HCT116), pancreas adenocarcinoma cells (PANC-1), lung cancer cells (A549), liver cancer cells (Hep3B) and cervical carcinoma cells (Hela) in zebrafish embryos, and exhibited strong anti-bacterial effects at the concentration of 15.63 mg/mL. CONCLUSION: The two dosage forms of Forsythia Suspense have similar anti-inflammatory, antitumor and antibacterial effects, but their effects for inhibiting IL-6, P65, and Jnk mRNA expressions and HCT116 cell proliferation differ significantly at low doses in zebrafish.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to eliminate the current deficiency in the use of music in the field of special education, to increase musical activities in special education, and to present an accreditation model proposal to increase the skills of institutions, educators, and students. The research was designed with a grounded theory study pattern, one of the qualitative research methods. Data for the research were collected examining the necessary documents, and through semi-structured interviews with experts in both the field of special education and music. As a result of the interviews, it was concluded that music was used as both a goal and a tool in the education of individuals receiving special education and that different skills were developed through rhythm, melody, and lyrics. It has been revealed that individuals' body coordination skills are improved through the rhythm in music, self-care skills are improved through melodies and lyrics, and behavioral disorders are corrected through rhythm, melodies, and lyrics. All these results led to the emergence of an accreditation model proposal to develop and rehabilitate individuals receiving special education through music.

ABSTRACT

The aggregation of adeno-associated viral (AAV) capsids in an aqueous environment was investigated via coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CG-MD) simulations. The primary driving force and mechanism of the aggregation were investigated with or without single-strand DNA (ssDNA) loaded at various process temperatures. Capsid aggregation appeared to involve multiple residue interactions (i.e., hydrophobic, polar and charged residues) leading to complex protein aggregation. In addition, two aggregation mechanisms (i.e., the fivefold face-to-face contact and the edge-to-edge contact) were identified from this study. The ssDNA with its asymmetric structure could be the reason for destabilizing protein subunits and enhancing the interaction between the charged residues, and further result in the non-reversible face-to-face contact. At higher temperature, the capsid structure was found to be unstable with the significant size expansion of the loaded ssDNA which could be attributed to reduced number of intramolecular hydrogen bonds, the increased conformational deviations of protein subunits and the higher residue fluctuations. The CG-MD model was further validated with previous experimental and simulation data, including the full capsid size measurement and the capsid internal pressure. Thus, a good understanding of AAV capsid aggregation, instability and the role of ssDNA were revealed by applying the developed computational model.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Various ocular implants were suggested as a means of enhancing vision in patients with advanced age related macular degeneration. Recently, a new generation of implantable telescopes has been released. The purpose of this study is to report the surgical technique of implantation along with patient outcomes. METHODS: This work focuses on the surgical technique. Crucial surgical steps are carefully reported along with discussion on main drawbacks and limitations. RESULTS: This approach uses a preloaded delivery system with improved features and requires a smaller incision. First patient outcomes are also reported. CONCLUSIONS: Surgical steps to implant this preloaded intraocular telescope are easier than previous versions, however this remains a complex procedure. Initial patient functional outcomes look promising.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: In this work, our aim is to report the functional outcomes of cataract surgery with smaller-incision new-generation miniature telescope (SING IMT) implantation followed by rehabilitation training in patients with central visual loss due to late-stage age-related macular degeneration (AMD). METHODS: This retrospective study included patients who were monocularly implanted with SING IMT and then followed a rehabilitation program based on 6 biweekly sessions focused on visual abilities, reading, writing, visual motor integration and mobility. A total of 11 participants were included in this study. Reading acuity (RA), reading speed (RS), and fixation stability (FS) were assessed biweekly at 6-, 8-, 10-, 12-, 14-, and 16-week follow-up visits after SING IMT implantation and at a final assessment at 24 weeks. Best-corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA) was also measured at baseline and at the same postoperative timepoints. RESULTS: Mean baseline BCDVA was 12.5 ± 8.6 letter score. Both RA and RS were found to be significantly improved from the first rehabilitation session (6 weeks after surgery) to the last session (24 weeks after surgery). At the end of the rehabilitation program, mean RA was 0.45 ± 0.19 LogMAR and mean RS was 30.9 ± 17.6 words per minute. Moreover, all patients achieved a FS of 15 s or more after the last rehabilitation session. Most patients (55%) achieved an improvement of 15 letters in BCDVA at the end of the study. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that rehabilitation training can improve visual functions of patients with late-stage AMD implanted with SING IMT in real-world tasks such as reading skills.

ABSTRACT

Music therapy (MT) is a common modality that performs a complementary and integrative role along with standard treatments for many pediatric diseases. This article briefly reviewed the effects of MT on children aged 5-11 years old and adolescents with asthma from previous studies, specified its functional target towards asthma symptoms, and sorted out the design and investigation of selected research. Medline/PubMed, Embase, SportDis-cus, Cochrane Library, Teacher Reference Centre, Web of Science, Academic Search Complete, PsycARTICLES, and Scopus were queried for experimental and observational studies published between 1990 and 2021. Then, researchers showed that MT lessened patients' asthma symptoms, improved medication compliance, pulmonary function, and quality of life, and helped children and their parents manage anxiety and depression. This article may serve as a reference for clinical research for pediatric asthma therapies and lay the foundation for future research on MT and its clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

In the present work, the optimization of extraction, emulsifying properties, and biological activities of polysaccharides from Lentinula edodes Sing (LES) were studied. The results showed LES polysaccharides extracted by hot water or ultrasonication are a group of ß-glucan. Among all the samples, the one extracted by hot water showed the best emulsifying capacity. In addition, the results demonstrated that LES polysaccharide had strong scavenging activities in vitro on DPPH and ABTS radicals, which reached the highest level for the one extracted by 90 min ultrasonication (p < 0.05). Overall, Lentinula edodes Sing polysaccharides (LESPs) may have potential applications as emulsifying agents in food industries.

ABSTRACT

Background: Although single-port laparoscopy surgery has been evaluated for several years, it has not been widely adopted by gynecologic oncologists. The objective was to compare the perioperative outcomes and survival of endometrial cancer (EC) patients undergoing transumbilical laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (TU-LESS) with multi-port laparoscopic surgery (MLS). Materials and methods: This is a retrospective comparative monocentric study including patients treated between December 2017 and October 2021. The perioperative outcomes and survival of EC patients who had surgery via TU-LESS or MLS were compared, by propensity matching. Results: A total of 156 patients were included (TU-LESS vs. MLS: 78 vs. 78). The conversion rate of TU-LESS and MLS was 5.13% and 2.56%, respectively (P=0.681). The operation time was comparable between the two groups [207.5min (180-251) vs. 197.5min (168.8-225), P=0.095]. There was no significant difference between the two groups in exhaustion time, perioperative complications, or postoperative complications. While, the TU-LESS group had a shorter out-of-bed activity time [36 hours (24-48) vs. 48 hours (48-72), P<0.001] and a lower visual analog pain scale 36 hours after surgery [1 (1-2) vs. 2 (1-2), P<0.001] than the MLS group. The length of hospital stay was similar in the two groups [5(4-6) vs. 5(4-5), P=0.599]. Following surgery, 38.5% of the TU-LESS patients and 41% of the MLS patients got adjuvant therapy (P=0.744). The median follow-up time for TU-LESS and MLS cohorts was 45 months (range: 20-66) and 43 months (range: 18-66), respectively. One TU-LESS patient and one MLS patient died following recurrence. The 4-year overall survival was similar in both groups (98.3% vs. 98.5%, P=0.875). Conclusion: TU-LESS is a feasible and safe option with comparable perioperative outcomes and survival of MLS in endometrial cancer. With the growing acceptance of sentinel lymph node biopsy, TU-LESS of endometrial cancer may be a viable option for patients and surgeons.

ABSTRACT

Age-associated DNA-methylation drift (AMD) manifests itself in two ways in mammals: global decrease (hypomethylation) and local increase of DNA methylation (hypermethylation). To comprehend the principle behind this bidirectional AMD, we studied methylation states of spatially clustered CpG dinucleotides in mouse splenic DNA using reduced-representation-bisulfite-sequencing (RRBS). The mean methylation levels of whole CpGs declined with age. Promoter-resident CpGs, generally weakly methylated (<5%) in young mice, became hypermethylated in old mice, whereas CpGs in gene-body and intergenic regions, initially moderately (~33%) and extensively (>80%) methylated, respectively, were hypomethylated in the old. Chromosome-wise analysis of methylation revealed that inter-individual heterogeneities increase with age. The density of nearby CpGs was used to classify individual CpGs, which found hypermethylation in CpG-rich regions and hypomethylation in CpG-poor regions. When genomic regions were grouped by methylation level, high-methylation regions tended to become hypomethylated whereas low-methylation regions tended to become hypermethylated, regardless of genomic structure/function. Data analysis revealed that while methylation level and CpG density were interdependent, methylation level was a better predictor of the AMD pattern representing a shift toward the mean. Further analysis of gene-expression data showed a decrease in the expression of highly-expressed genes and an increase in the expression of lowly-expressed genes with age. This shift towards the mean in gene-expression changes was correlated with that of methylation changes, indicating a potential link between the two age-associated changes. Our findings suggest that age-associated hyper- and hypomethylation events are stochastic and attributed to malfunctioning intrinsic mechanisms for methylation maintenance in low- and high-methylation regions, respectively.

ABSTRACT

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) causes severe vision impairments, including blindness. An option to improve vision in AMD patients is through intraocular lenses and optics. Among others, implantable miniaturized telescopes, which direct light to healthy lateral regions of the retina, can be highly effective in improving vision in AMD patients. Yet, the quality of the restored vision might be sensitive to the optical transmission and aberrations of the telescope. To shed light on these points, we studied the in vitro optical performance of an implantable miniaturized telescope, namely, the SING IMT™ (Samsara Vision Ltd., Far Hills, NJ, USA) designed to improve vision in patients affected by late-stage AMD. Specifically, we measured the optical transmission in the spectral range 350-750 nm of the implantable telescope with a fiber-optic spectrometer. Wavefront aberrations were studied by measuring the wavefront of a laser beam after passing through the telescope and expanding the measured wavefront into a Zernike polynomial basis. Wavefront concavity indicated that the SING IMT™ behaves as a diverging lens with a focal length of -111 mm. The device exhibited even optical transmission in the whole visible spectrum and effective curvature suitable for retinal images magnification with negligible geometrical aberrations. Optical spectrometry and in vitro wavefront analysis provide evidence supporting the feasibility of miniaturized telescopes as high-quality optical elements and a favorable option for AMD visual impairment treatments.

ABSTRACT

El cistoadenoma apendicular es una neoplasia poco frecuente, que tiene una incidencia de 0,2 % a 0,3 % en todas las apendicetomías; esta afección predomina en pacientes féminas y su presentación es poco específica en cuanto a los síntomas, los cuales pueden compararse a un cuadro de apendicitis aguda, una masa abdominal, un cuadro obstructivo o ginecológico, o manifestaciones urológicas, que son las menos frecuentes. Se presentó una paciente femenina de 59 años de edad con dolor abdominal localizado en la fosa ilíaca derecha de 4 meses de evolución; se realizaron varios exámenes complementarios, una laparoscopia diagnóstica, una laparotomía exploratoria y también una apendicetomía. Después de estos exámenes se realizó un diagnóstico histológico de cistoadenoma mucinoso apendicular.


Appendiceal cystadenoma is a rare neoplasm, with an incidence of 0.2% to 0.3% among all appendectomies; this condition predominates in female patients and its presentation is unspecific in terms of symptoms, which can be compared to acute appendicitis, an abdominal mass, obstructive or gynecological symptoms, or urological manifestations, which are the least frequent. We present a 59-year-old female patient with an abdominal pain over 4 months located in the right iliac fossa; several complementary tests were performed such as a diagnostic laparoscopy, an exploratory laparotomy and an appendectomy. After these examinations, a histological diagnosis of appendiceal mucinous cystadenoma was made.

RESUMO Objetivo descrever os principais métodos quantitativos utilizados para análise morfométrica do trato vocal em cantores, suas aplicações e os principais segmentos estudados. Estratégia de pesquisa trata-se de uma revisão integrativa guiada pela pergunta condutora: "Quais os principais métodos quantitativos utilizados para análise morfométrica do trato vocal, suas aplicações e os principais segmentos estudados em cantores?". Foram utilizadas as bases eletrônicas PubMed, Scopus e BVS, por meio da chave de busca Vocal tract OR Oropharynx AND Morphology OR Geometry AND Evaluation OR Diagnosis AND voice, sem restrições de ano de publicação, sendo incluídos artigos em três idiomas: português, inglês e espanhol. Critérios de seleção: a seleção se deu de forma independente, por meio da leitura por pares e posterior aplicação dos critérios de exclusão e inclusão. Resultados dos 380 estudos, foram excluídos 30 duplicados. A partir da leitura dos resumos, aplicando-se os critérios de seleção, foram selecionados 18 estudos para leitura na íntegra, dos quais, 12 foram incluídos nesta revisão. A ressonância magnética foi o principal instrumento utilizado e os segmentos analisados incluíram desde o comprimento e volume do trato vocal, como segmentos isolados e suas particularidades morfológicas. Conclusão os métodos de quantificação morfológica do trato vocal integram instrumentos importantes para a avaliação instrumental do trato vocal e de seus segmentos, colaborando na atualização tecnológica em voz para melhor compreensão e intervenções fonoaudiológicas na voz cantada


ABSTRACT Purpose To describe the main quantitative methods used for morphometric analysis of the vocal tract in singers, their applications and the main segments studied. Research strategy This is an integrative review guided by the guiding question "What are the main quantitative methods used for morphometric analysis of the vocal tract, their applications and the main segments studied in singers?". The electronic databases PubMed, Scopus and VHL were used through the search key (Vocal tract OR Oropharynx) AND (Morphology OR Geometry) AND (Evaluation OR Diagnosis) AND (voice), without restriction of years of publication, including articles in three languages: Portuguese, English and Spanish. Selection criteria The selection took place independently through reading by pairs and subsequent application of exclusion and inclusion criteria. Results Of the 380 studies, 30 duplicates were excluded. After reading the abstracts, applying the selection criteria, 18 studies were selected for full reading, of which 12 were included in this review. Magnetic resonance imaging was the main instrument used and the analyzed segments ranged from the length and volume of the vocal tract to isolated segments and their morphological particularities. Conclusion Vocal tract morphological quantification methods are important for the instrumental evaluation of the vocal tract and its segments, a technological update leading to better understanding of singers' voice and therapeutical intervention.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In this study, we aimed to report the short-term (6 months) effects on visual functionality and safety of femto-laser assisted smaller-incision new-generation implantable miniature telescope (SING-IMT™) implanting, particularly related to postsurgical intraocular pressure increase, in patients suffering from end-stage age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataract. This device, designed for monocular use, aims to minimise the impact of the central scotoma by projecting the images onto a larger area of the photoreceptors surrounding the macula. METHODS: In this prospective multicentric observational case series study, 6 eyes of 6 patients who underwent SING-IMT™ implantations were enrolled. At baseline and 6 months follow-up, best corrected distance visual acuity (BCDV) and best corrected near visual acuity (BCNVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), anterior chamber depth, endothelial cells count were assessed. In addition, IOP was also measured at 7, 15, 30, 45 days, and at 3 months follow-up. Finally, the incidence of complications was evaluated. RESULTS: At final follow-up, in the study eyes, mean BCDVA improved by +10.0 letters (6.25; 13.8) letters and mean BCNVA improved by -0.30 logMAR (-0.55; -0.20). At postoperative month 6, we reported a mean IOP decrease of 4.50 mmHg (-5.75; -0.25). Interestingly, 83.3% of patients had an increased IOP value in at least one of the first two postoperative follow-ups (7 days and 15 days). In patients in whom intraoperative mechanical iridotomy was not performed, it was necessary to perform a postoperative YAG laser iridotomy to improve IOP management. Compared to the baseline, ECD loss at 6 months follow-up was 12.6%. CONCLUSIONS: The SING IMT™ device was found to be effective in the distance and near vision improvement, without serious postoperative complications. We recommend intraoperative mechanical iridectomy in order to easily manage post-operative IOP and to avoid sudden IOP rise with its possible consequences. These good results can be a hope to partially improve the quality of life of patients suffering from severe end stage macular atrophy.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the risk factors for combined coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) in patients with ischemia and non-obstructive coronary artery disease (INOCA).Methods:From October 2020 to May 2022, 100 INOCA patients with myocardial ischemic symptoms who underwent coronary angiography (CAG) suggestive of <50% stenosis in all three coronary arteries at the Tenth People′s Hospital of Tongji University were prospectively recruited. Myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI), transthoracic echocardiography and cadmium-zinc-telluride (CZT) SPECT coronary flow quantification were performed in the same month, and 93 INOCA patients (36 males and 57 females, age (63.0±10.9) years) were finally included. CMD was defined as coronary flow reserve (CFR)<2.5. Independent-sample t test, Mann-Whitney U test and χ2 test were used to compare MPI results and left ventricular volume parameters between CMD and non-CMD groups. ROC curve analysis was used to analyze the efficacy of each index in predicting CMD, and independent risk factors for CMD were screened by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results:Among 93 INOCA patients, 29 were in the CMD group and 64 were in the non-CMD group. The age, proportion of hypertension, left ventricular mass index (LVMI), summed stress score (SSS), summed difference score (SDS), left ventricular internal diameter systolic (LVIDS), interventricular septum thickness (IVST), and left ventricular posterior wall thickness (LVPWT) in the CMD group were higher than those in the non-CMD group ( t values: 2.42-3.76, χ2=8.94, z values: -3.31, -3.41, all P<0.05). ROC curve analysis showed that LVMI, SSS, SDS, LVPWT, IVST and age were significant in predicting CMD (AUCs: 0.67-0.72). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that LVMI (odds ratio ( OR)=1.08, 95% CI: 1.01-1.17), SDS ( OR=5.37, 95% CI: 1.95-14.78), hypertension ( OR=5.68, 95% CI: 1.34-24.18) and age ( OR=1.10, 95% CI: 1.03-1.18) were risk factors for CMD. Conclusion:LVMI, SDS, hypertension and age are strongly associated with combined CMD in INOCA patients, which can be used for early risk stratification of INOCA patients.

Background: The role of ferroptosis in tumor progression and immune microenvironment is extensively investigated. However, the potential value of ferroptosis regulators in predicting prognosis and therapeutic strategies for osteosarcoma (OS) patients remains to be elucidated. Methods: Here, we extracted transcriptomic and survival data from Therapeutically Applicable Research to Generate Effective Treatments (TARGET) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) to investigate the expression and prognostic value of ferroptosis regulators in OS patients. After comprehensive analyses, including Gene set variation analysis (GSVA), single-sample gene-set enrichment analysis (ssGSEA), Estimated Stromal and Immune cells in Malignant Tumor tissues using Expression (ESTIMATE), single-cell RNA sequencing, and biological experiments, our constructed 8-ferroptosis-regulators prognostic signature effectively predicted the immune landscape, prognosis, and chemoradiotherapy strategies for OS patients. Results: We constructed an 8-ferroptosis-regulators signature that could predict the survival outcome of OS. The signature algorithm scored samples, and high-scoring patients were more prone to worse prognoses. The tumor immune landscape suggested the positive relevance between risk score and immunosuppression. Interfering HILPDA and MUC1 expression would inhibit tumor cell proliferation and migration, and MUC1 might improve the ferroptosis resistance of OS cells. Moreover, we predicted chemoradiotherapy strategies of cancer patients following ferroptosis-risk-score groups. Conclusion: Dysregulated ferroptosis gene expression can affect OS progression by affecting the tumor immune landscape and ferroptosis resistance. Our risk model can predict OS survival outcomes, and we propose that HILPDA and MUC1 are potential targets for cancer therapy.

ABSTRACT

The total triterpenes in edible mushrooms have high medicinal value, and the sclerotium has various biological activities, such as the regulation of blood pressure and blood glucose. In this study, the total triterpenes of the Pleurotus tuber-regium (Fr.) Sing Sclerotium (PTRSS) were extracted, and their hypolipidemic effects were also investigated. The infrared spectra showed that the total triterpenes were consistent with the characteristic structures of the total triterpenes before and after purification. The binding abilities of total triterpenes to sodium glycocholate, sodium taurocholate, and sodium cholate were investigated, and all of them had a good binding ability to cholate. In vivo experiments showed that zebrafish tolerated the total triterpenes from the mushroom nuclei at a maximum concentration of 500 µg/mL. A correlation analysis showed that the total triterpenes from the mushroom nuclei reduced the lipid accumulation in zebrafish induced by a high-fat diet, and the lipid-lowering effect showed a correlation with dose.

A range of studies suggest that singing activities with young children can have a beneficial impact on other aspects of their development. However, there is little research examining the relationship between young children's singing and their developing social identity. In the current study, data were captured of young children's singing and social identity as part of a larger-scale, longitudinal evaluation of the nationwide Sing Up programme in England. Participants were 720 children aged 5-8 years old. The assessment of young children's singing ability employed an established measure and was undertaken individually. With adult support, the children were also asked to complete a simple questionnaire that focused on selected aspects of their social identity, both in general terms and also related to singing. Key themes embraced their attitudes to singing (at home, in school and in informal settings), singer identity (emotional engagement with singing and self-concept), and perceptions of self (self-efficacy, self-esteem, social integration). Comparative data were collected from young children of a similar age outside the programme. Findings suggested that the programme had a positive impact on children's singing ability, both overall and including the youngest children. The data analyses suggest that children could be identified as either "pupils with positive singing identity" or "pupils with less positive, or still developing singing identity." Overall, pupils with a more positive singer identity-irrespective of Sing Up-related experience-tended to report more positive attitudes toward singing at school and other settings, had higher perceived levels of self-esteem and social integration, as well as more positive evaluations of their singing ability. Furthermore, the research suggests that successful participation in high-quality singing activities is likely to have a positive impact on young children's singing ability and, by implication, such positive singing development will also be associated with aspects of self that are related to contexualised singer identity and their sense of social inclusion.

Age-related macular degeneration is the third leading cause of blindness worldwide after cataracts and glaucoma. We described our recent surgical experience in managing the smaller-incision, new-generation, implantable, miniature telescope that has been designed to enlarge retinal images of the central visual field implanted monocularly in the capsular bag after lens extraction.
