ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Abstract This article shows a photograph of the result of the ticket sales process for the Swimming World Cup, as well as an analysis of consumer behavior throughout this process. 46,181 transactions were descriptively analyzed for the variables of price, attendance, capacity, sports discipline, competition schedule, moment, and purchase channel. In addition, a polynomial regression model was developed that explained 48.51% of the variability of tickets sold. Thanks to the implementation of a dynamic pricing policy, attendance of 66.8% was achieved with 53.1% of anticipated sales. On average, it was bought 4.22 tickets in each transaction, and higher attendance was associated with higher revenue volume. The results can be considered to apply measures in the planning of the competition itself, as well as for the orientation of commercial strategies.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Due to its recent adoption, little is known about the performance of public-private partnerships (PPP) and their determinants. The present study aims to investigate the behavior of PPP and their contractual variations in the provision of sports arenas for the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil, using a comparative perspective on traditional public and private provision modes. The research adopts a qualitative approach with an exploratory perspective and multiple case studies. The results suggest that, for Brazilian public administration, PPP presented good value for money, especially in terms of the time schedule, costs, diversified revenues and bidding process as a result of incentive structures coming from PPP contracts and private partner flexibility.

ABSTRACT

Mass gatherings at major international sporting events put millions of international travelers and local host-country residents at risk of acquiring infectious diseases, including locally endemic infectious diseases. The mosquito-borne Zika virus (ZIKV) has recently aroused global attention due to its rapid spread since its first detection in May 2015 in Brazil to 22 other countries and other territories in the Americas. The ZIKV outbreak in Brazil, has also been associated with a significant rise in the number of babies born with microcephaly and neurological disorders, and has been declared a 'Global Emergency by the World Health Organization. This explosive spread of ZIKV in Brazil poses challenges for public health preparedness and surveillance for the Olympics and Paralympics which are due to be held in Rio De Janeiro in August, 2016. We review the epidemiology and clinical features of the current ZIKV outbreak in Brazil, highlight knowledge gaps, and review the public health implications of the current ZIKV outbreak in the Americas. We highlight the urgent need for a coordinated collaborative response for prevention and spread of infectious diseases with epidemic potential at mass gatherings events.

ABSTRACT

Brazil’s recent experiences in the semi-final of the 2014 World Cup show thepotential for collective shame that is potentially, but rarely, realized as representative teams, fans and nations dream of international sporting successand positive international attention from mega-sporting events. Feelings of shock, deep disappointment and anger in Brazil are examinedas manifestations of group-based and collective shame after the semi-final defeatfor the host nation’s supporters and humiliationof the national team. I explored “bottom up” mechanismsand other means by which collective shamearguably occurred due to high expectations and national narratives built around footballing success. The analysis includes the complex social andrelational means by which Brazil’s representative team failed to “restore pride” by returning to previous minimal standards in the third-place playoff and the fortunatemanner further humiliation for Brazilians was avoided through the German team’s subsequent victory over Argentina in the final. The brief collective emotion analysis is completed with an examination oflessons that might be learned from Germany’s long process of transformation from collectiveshame after the Second World War to the eventual experience of a cosmopolitan national pride through football at the World Cup 2006 tournament and other subsequent international successes.
