ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) have been increasing among US college students. Accurate measurement of STB is key to understanding trends and guiding suicide prevention efforts. We aimed to compare the prevalence estimates of STB among college students from two campus-based surveys (the National College Health Assessment [NCHA] and the Healthy Minds Study [HMS]) and one general population study (the National Survey on Drug Use and Health [NSDUH]). METHODS: Estimates were generated from the three surveys for past year suicidal ideation (PYSI) and past year suicide attempts (PYSA) among 18- to 22-year-old full-time college students. Data were combined from each survey to develop bivariate and multivariate regression models for odds of PYSI and PYSA. RESULTS: Estimates for PYSI varied between the three surveys: 34.3% for NCHA, 15.0% for HMS, and 10.7% for NSDUH. Estimates for PYSA were 2.6% for NCHA, 1.6% for HMS, and 1.7% for NSDUH. After adjusting for demographic and educational characteristics, odds of PYSI remained significantly lower for HMS participants (aOR 0.31, 95% CI 0.29-0.33) and NSDUH participants (aOR 0.19, 95% CI 0.19-0.30) compared to NCHA participants. The odds of PYSA for HMS participants were lower than those for NCHA participants (aOR 0.63, 95% CI 0.54-0.73). CONCLUSION: Estimates of PYSI and PYSA vary between leading sources of data on college student mental health. The differences are likely related to question wording, survey implementation, as well as institutional and individual representation. Accounting for these differences when interpreting estimates of STB can help guide suicide prevention efforts.

ABSTRACT

One of the main goals of college- and university-sponsored travel is to broaden the global perspectives of student travelers, thereby enhancing their ability to effectively communicate and work with people from different cultural backgrounds. Pre-travel consultations are important for all students traveling internationally, and especially for those facing current or past health inequities and marginalization. To offer high quality, inclusive services, college travel health clinicians must understand both the student traveler population and cultural norms at the travel destinations, especially those related to health and safety. This article provides an overview of health equity definitions and pre-travel preparation through an equity lens. It also reviews travel health equity-related clinical implications including: helping to prepare student travelers for issues related to gender, sexuality, identity, and sexual assault; assisting travelers with preexisting health conditions and disabilities; and serving older student travelers and travelers with financial limitations.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Sleep alterations are common in college students, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sociodemographic factors may predict these alterations in this population. OBJECTIVE: To identify the sociodemographic factors and health characteristics associated with the number of hours of sleep of college students during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study carried out with 244 university students from a multicampi public university in the State of Bahia, Northeast Brazil. Data collection was performed online and participants answered a specific questionnaire to assess sleep hours, sociodemographic and health variables. RESULTS: Significant associations were observed between hours of sleep and older students (odds ratio adjusted -ORaj: 3.75; 95% Confidence Interval -CI: 1.81-7.75; p < 0.01), attending the final semesters (ORaj: 1.85; 95% CI: 1.05-3.25; p < 0.03), and who reported having some disease (ORaj: 2.18; 95% CI: 1.05-4.50; p < 0.03) with greater chances of getting less sleep. However, those who used tobacco (ORaj: 0.08; 95% CI: 0.01-0.45; p < 0.001) were likely to have more hours of sleep per night. CONCLUSION: Sleep restriction was common among participating college students, which has likely intensified due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its restrictions. This encourages specific public health actions, contemplating the health and hours of sleep of this population.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To investigate the quality and influencing factors of direct drinking water in schools in Nanjing City, so as to provide basis for management of school drinking water.@*Methods@#From April to July 2023, direct drinking water equipment from 146 primary and secondary schools were selected from Nanjing City using a stratified random sampling method and tested for colony forming units (CFU) and permanganate index. Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the differences between groups, and multiple linear regression was used to analyze the influencing factors.@*Results@#The CFU and permanganate levels of school direct drinking water in Nanjing City were 1.00(0.00,15.50)CFU/mL and 0.47(0.26, 0.75)mg/L, respectively. The CFU level increased when the filter replacement time exceeded 3 months and when the water source was piped, while the permanganate index increased when the filter replacement time exceeded 3 months and using activated carbon technology ( Z =-2.21, -3.92, -2.31, -8.45 , P <0.05). The results of multiple linear regression analysis showed that the replacement time of filter element exceeding 3 months was positively correlated with the CFU level, and the process type involving activated carbon, a laid pipe network and a filter replacement time exceeding 3 months were positively correlated with the permanganate index( β =167.08, 0.32, 0.35, 0.11, P <0.05).@*Conclusions@#There are certain problems with the water quality of primary and secondary school direct drinking water in Nanjing City. Schools should promptly replace the filter and maintain the drinking water equipment to ensure the hygiene and safety of campus water quality.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study examined campus and clinic factors that may influence likelihood of implementing sexual violence (SV) prevention for college students seeking care in campus health and counseling centers. METHODS: Campus-, clinic-, and student-level data were collected from both intervention and control campuses as part of a 28-campus cluster randomized controlled trial. A case series exploratory data analysis assessed differences in the implementation of an SV prevention intervention by campus characteristics. RESULTS: All large schools were in the top quartile for reporting positive prevention policies regarding SV. At the clinic level, the presence of SV protocols and procedures varied widely with no clear correlation with school size. Students at intervention schools where providers received instruction and tools to facilitate these discussions reported more discussions with providers about SV. Only school size appeared to be associated with positive SV policies on campus and student-reported receipt of SV prevention intervention. Large schools performed well on campus-level policies, yet students reported some of the lowest levels of intervention receipt in the clinics at these larger schools. IMPLICATIONS: Consistency between campus and clinic environments and implementation of the intervention was not observed. Our findings suggest that high performance regarding SV policy and prevention on a campus do not necessarily translate to implementation of appropriate SV prevention and care for students seeking care on campus, including assessments, resources, referrals, and services. ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Suicide-related behaviors are prevalent among college students, and several mental health problems associated with increased suicide risk have increased over time. Furthermore, notable cultural events (e.g., political changes, COVID-19) have occurred in the past decade, which likely impact trends in suicide-related behaviors. The current study examined how the prevalence of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), suicidal ideation (SI), and suicide attempts has changed from 2012 to 2022 across three different universities. METHOD: Archival datasets from multiple years of college student survey data were compiled, and different measures of NSSI, SI, and suicide attempts were dichotomized to assess prevalence. Chi-square goodness-of-fit tests were used to identify changes in suicide-related behaviors across time. RESULTS: Results indicated significant increases in the prevalence of most behaviors across each university, with most increases occurring after 2018. Despite sharing a general trend of increased suicide-related behaviors, each university differed considerably in their respective trends between various timepoints, suggesting that unique factors may differentially contribute to growing risk among college students. CONCLUSION: Overall, the current study identifies increasing trends in suicide-related behaviors over the past decade and highlights the value of investigating these behaviors at the university level.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To establish an overview of vaccination amongst health students in Lyon 1 University and to evaluate the implementation of a new verification system of immunization obligations with an electronic vaccination card (EVC) from the “MesVaccins.net” website. METHODS: A questionnaire was sent by the Lyon 1 University Student Health Service (SHS) to the first-year health studies students over the age of 18 in Lyon in 2020-2021 who shared their EVC; exploitation of these EVCs’ data. RESULTS: Amongst all students, 67.4% transmitted their information to the SHS. They reported organizational difficulties in updating (33.3%) and certifying their EVC with a healthcare professional (55.9%). Global satisfaction of the students was 78.0%. This study highlighted many differences between Lyon Est and Lyon Sud campuses, especially about general knowledge of the SHS, visibility of the promotion campaign, rate of students who transmitted their information to the SHS and rate of up-to-date students. Regarding mandatory immunization, 83.4% of the students were up-to-date with diphtheria-tetanus-poliomyelitis, 56.8% with hepatitis B, and 64.7% had done a tuberculin intradermal test; 43.4% of the students were simultaneously up-to-date with these three immunizations. CONCLUSION: The rate of up-to-date students is insufficient. This study stresses the necessity of an early campaign of immunizations promotion, with better access to healthcare professionals able to certify EVCs.

Conclusion: Le pourcentage d'étudiants à jour est insuffisant. Cette étude souligne la nécessité d'une campagne précoce de promotion des immunisations avec un meilleur accès des étudiants à des professionnels de santé validant les CVE.

ABSTRACT

Undergraduate students are usually subjected to a routine with constant pressure, stress, circadian misalignment, and sleep irregularity that impairs their subjective well-being. Recent evidence suggests that circadian preference is also a risk factor for impaired mental health and factors related to subjective well-being. This study aimed to identify the sociodemographic factors associated with subjective well-being and describe the mediating behavioral variables. Between September 2018 and March 2021, 615 Brazilian students enrolled in higher educational institutions completed an electronic form containing questionnaires on subjective well-being, sociodemographic, and behavioral-related factors (convenience sample). A statistical mediation model was applied to describe how these variables influence subjective well-being. We observed that Morningness (p < .001), identification with the male gender (p = .010), not working while studying (p = .048), and the practice of Pilates/yoga (p = .028) were associated with greater subjective well-being. Except for employment status, no direct effects were observed, which reinforces the need to consider a multidimensional approach. The relationship between subjective well-being and sociodemographic factors exists only in the presence of behavioral mediators, specifically perceived stress, daytime sleepiness, symptoms of depression, sleep quality, and positive and negative affects. Future work should investigate in more detail the impact of sleep, stress, and circadian preferences on this relationship.

ABSTRACT

We determine the presence and diversity of rhinoviruses in nasopharyngeal swab samples from 248 individuals who presented with influenza-like illness (ILI) at a university clinic in the Southwest United States between October 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021. We identify at least 13 rhinovirus genotypes (A11, A22, A23, A25, A67, A101, B6, B79, C1, C17, C36, and C56, as well a new genotype [AZ88**]) and 16 variants that contributed to the burden of ILI in the community. We also describe the complete capsid protein gene of a member (AZ88**) of an unassigned rhinovirus A genotype.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Access to adequate mental health (MH) services is necessary for nearly half of Canadian youth (18-24 years) who enroll in post-secondary education given the relatively high risk of MH problems. Our objectives were to determine the status of MH services available to students in post-secondary institutions in Canada and to determine the extent to which these services are based on the principles of a high-quality youth MH (YMH) service. METHOD: Information on MH services was collected from websites of a representative sample (N = 67) of post-secondary institutions across all provinces. Data were analysed descriptively according to four categories (universities with a Faculty of Medicine (FoM) n = 18, other large universities n = 15, small universities n = 16, and colleges n = 18). RESULTS: Most institutions provided 24-h crisis line support (84%) and indicated the availability of free counselling or psychotherapy (n = 62 of 67, 92.5%), while only a minority indicated provision of an initial clinical assessment (25%) and provision of multiple sessions of therapy (37%). Wait time for first contact was impressively low (<72 h) in the minority of institutions (40%) which provided this information. Access to either a prescribing physician or psychiatrist was infrequent, though several mentioned an unexplained model of "stepped care" and outside referrals. While relevant information was not uniformly easy to access, larger institutions both with and without a FoM appear to be better poised to provide MH services. None of the institutions appeared to follow all the principles of service delivery recommended for a high-quality YMH, with only two showing early identification activities. CONCLUSIONS: MH services in post-secondary institutions may need a transformation similar to YMH services, including a clear pathway to care, an initial clinical assessment, early identification of MHA disorders, and better utilization of institutional resources through greater collaboration and matching of timely interventions to the presenting problems.

ABSTRACT

With the COVID-19 pandemic, the university context, which had already been the stage for discussions regarding mental health, has experienced more severe crises by students. In view of this scenario, the Solidarity Listening project was developed, aimed at the mental health of undergraduate and graduate students. In this article, we aim to discuss online psychological care with psychology students during the period of strict social isolation (May to June 2020). We carried out, with volunteer psychologists, a focus group aimed at the experience of short-termonline psychological care in the pandemic context. This is a qualitative study, carried out with 11 clinical psychologists participating in the aforementioned project. From a critical phenomenological analysis, the results were divided into five categories: a) limitations and contributions of the project; b) the importance of training and clinical supervision for the quality of the project; c) online psychological care; d) being a clinical psychologist during the COVID-19 crisis; and e) emerging demands in psychological care in quarantine. Finally, we discuss the importance of demystifying psychological care in crisis situations, especially in the online modality, promoting questions regarding the training and performance of professionals, to be aware of the psychological demands that the context of crisis entails in society.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To construct an evaluation index system to assess the response capacity of universities to public health emergencies, so as to provide a basis for improvements the response capacity.@*Methods@#In November 2019, in order to develop an evaluation system based on literature review and expert discussions, 15 experts were invited to conduct a subjective evaluation used hierarchical analysis. The objective evaluation was conducted in 120 universities in Jiangsu Province used the inverse entropy weighting method, and the final evaluation employed the joint subjective and objective weighting method.@*Results@#The indicator system consisted of four primary indicators, nine secondary indicators, 32 tertiary indicators and 67 quaternary indicators. The analysis of the combined weighting method showed that the primary indicators, in descending order, included incident handling capability ( 0.666 ), incident detection capability (0.203), prior preparation capability (0.101) and post event recovery capability ( 0.031 ). The top three secondary indicator weights were emergency response (0.480), monitoring and reporting (0.203) and command and coordination (0.151). The results of the evaluation of the consistency indicators showed that the expert authority coefficient was 0.909 and the Kendall s W coordination coefficient was 0.836 ( P <0.01), with all consistency scale values < 0.1.@*Conclusion@#The evaluation system is highly scientific and credible, and provides basis for evaluating the response capability of universities to public health emergencies.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To understand the dilemma of different participants in school psychological crisis intervention, so as to provide guidance for the implementation of comprehensive psychological crisis intervention from multiple perspectives.@*Methods@#From March 2022 to January 2023, a total of 10 psychological consultants, 10 counselors, 10 peer students, 10 parents and 10 clients were selected from a certain university using convenient sampling method was interviewed with semi structured interviews, and the transcribed data were analyzed according to grounded theory.@*Results@#The predicaments of psychological crisis intervention mainly involved three core themes: early warning, ethical dilemma and negative emotion. Early warning approaches mainly included three core themes: school, social media and other institutions, and 50 participants reported mainly on peer students in schools(18 cases) and online media in social media(18 cases). Ethical dilemmas mainly focued on the conflict between confidentiality breaches and privacy protection. The negative emotions mainly include three core themes of anxiety, fear and powerlessness, which were characterized by dispersion. The optimization expectation of psychological crisis intervention mainly consisted of two core themes: professional expectation and collaborative expectation, both of which were the common expectation of the people involved.@*Conclusion@#School psychological crisis intervention should pay attention to the establishment of crisis early warning system and dialectic between confidentiality breaches and privacy protection. Schools should prevent the dispersion of negative emotions of participants, deepen professional construction and the coordination between home and school, and implement psychological crisis intervention from a comprehensive perspective.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To analyze the relationship between the toilet design and sanitary condition of primary and secondary schools in Chengdu and the epidemic situation of Norovirus infection, so as to provide scientific references for school toilet design and Norovirus prevention and control.@*Methods@#A total of 78 cases of norovirus epidemics from 2019 to 2020 were included in this study. These epidemics happened in 78 schools and the causes were indicated as human-to-human transmission. The Chi square and Mann-Whitney U test were used to compare categorical and continuous data respectively. Unconditional binary Logistic regression was used to examine the multivariate associations.@*Results@#Most epidemics happened from October in 2019 to March in 2020(79.49%, 62 cases), in primary schools (71.79%, 56 cases) and in the center area (52.56%, 41 cases). The median of the case number in each epidemic was 10. Overall, 56 schools (71.79%) were equipped with toilets which were flushed independently, and 22 schools (28.21%) were equipped with toilets which were flushed uniformly. There were 27 schools (34.62%) that did not have enough water taps. Logistic regression analysis found that those with toilets flushed uniformly had a stronger epidemic, compared to the schools with toilets flushed independently( OR=5.53, 95%CI=1.63-18.76, P <0.05).@*Conclusion@#In order to prevent intestinal infectious diseases , it is suggested that schools should design or reconstruct independent flushing toilets with adequate faucets.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To understand the current situation regarding emergency visits to a university hospital in Beijing, and to provide a basis for the standardized construction and formulation of emergency visit measures to university hospitals.@*Methods@#This study carried out a retrospective investigation and analysis of 73 emergency visits from September 2020 to December 2022 at a university hospital in Beijing.@*Results@#A total of 17 cases(23.3%) exhibited the most common of symptoms associated with convulsions during emergency visits to university hospital, while nine cases of abdominal pain(12.3%) and eight cases of dizziness( 11.0 %) were recorded. The proportion of males and females who presented to the emergency department was 60.3% and 39.7%, respectively. The top three diseases among emergency department outpatients included nervous system diseases(40 cases), gynecological diseases(seven cases), depression and alcoholism(six cases). The peak number of emergency visits occurred in April, May, September and November. The most frequent emergency visits presented from 13:00 to 18:00(32.9%), followed by 7:00 to 12:00(30.1%). Following emergency care, 12 cases improved, 54 cases were transferred to higher level hospitals for treatment, 2 depressive patients were taken home, 5 cases refused referral.@*Conclusion@#University hospitals should develop emergency plans for diseases related to emergency visits, provide targeted training for doctors and health education for teachers and students, and improve the emergency treatment capabilities.
