ABSTRACT

Leishmaniosis is a tropical and subtropical vector-borne disease caused by hemoparasites of the genus Leishmania. The disease can infect humans, as well as domestic and wildlife animals. Dogs are the main reservoir for L. infantum, the aetiological agent of visceral leishmaniosis (VL) in America, and a domestic source of L. braziliensis, the most widespread aetiological agent of American tegumentary leishmaniosis. Infected dogs can develop a clinical syndrome called canine leishmaniosis (CanL), which presents with skin lesions, mild fever; additionally hepatomegaly and splenomegaly can be observed, although asymptomatic infections are frequent. Direct microscopic observation of the parasite in bone marrow, blood, skin scrapings and conjunctival swab samples is the gold standard of diagnosis and is usually complemented with serological tests, and to a lesser extent, molecular detection of the parasite. In Argentina, leishmaniosis is an emerging disease, with a growing number of human and canine clinical cases since 2006. Our study was carried out in Mercedes, a town located in the subtropical north-eastern area of Argentina, where dogs with positive parasitological test results for Leishmania spp. must be euthanized according to local regulations. We evaluated the presence of Leishmania spp. DNA in the blood of dogs (n = 166) from urban and peri-urban zones. Genomic DNA was extracted from whole blood using Chelex 100 resin and a conserved 116 bp region of the kinetoplastid DNA was amplified by conventional PCR. Clinical signs, age and gender were recorded. Our results showed that 120 out of 166 surveyed dogs (72%) were positive for Leishmania spp. DNA of which only seven were positive by parasitological and serological tests. No significant correlation between positive cases and gender or age groups was found. This report shows the high prevalence of this disease in Argentina and contributes to improve public health policy with regard to diagnosis, prevention and treatment of infected dogs.

ABSTRACT

Currently the land use and land use change (LULUC) emits 1.3 ±â€¯0.5 Pg carbon (C) year-1, equivalent to 8% of the global annual emissions. The objectives of this study were to quantify (1) the impact of LULUC on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in a subtropical region and (2) the role of conservation agriculture to mitigate GHG emissions promoting ecosystem services. We developed a detailed IPCC Tier 2 GHG inventory for the Campos Gerais region of southern Brazil that has large cropland area under long-term conservation agriculture with high crop yields. The inventory accounted for historical and current emissions from fossil fuel combustion, LULUC and other minor sources. We used Century model to simulate the adoption of conservation best management practices, to all croplands in the region from 2017 to 2117. Our results showed historical (1930-2017) GHG emissions of 412 Tg C, in which LULUC contributes 91% (376 ±â€¯130 Tg C), the uncertainties ranged between 13 and 36%. Between 1930 and 1985 LULUC was a major source of GHG emission, however from 1985 to 2015 fossil fuel combustion became the primary source of GHG emission. Forestry sequestered 52 ±â€¯24 Tg C in 0.6 Mha in a period of 47 years (1.8 Tg C Mha-1 year-1) and no-till sequestered 30.4 ±â€¯24 Tg C in 2 Mha in a period of 32 years (0.5 Tg C Mha-1 year-1) being the principal GHG mitigating activities in the study area. The model predictions showed that best management practices have the potential to mitigate 13 years of regional emissions (330 Tg C in 100 years) or 105 years of agriculture, forestry and livestock emissions (40 Tg C in 100 years) making the agriculture sector a net carbon (C) sink and promoting ecosystem services.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this work was to study the composition of the Culicidae community in three environments with different degrees of anthropic disturbance in the province of Chaco. The nonparametric richness estimator ACE was calculated to measure the completeness of the sampling in each environment, and the diversity of each environment (α-diversity) were estimated. The composition, abundance and uniformity of species from the different environments were compared by means of range-species curves. ß-diversity was measured as species complementarity, which allowed us to know the degree of dissimilarity among the environments. The synanthropic index was estimated, identifying urban environment (synanthropic) species, eusynanthropic species, and wild species. The influence of climatic factors (mean temperature, relative humidity and rainfall) on the monthly and annual variations of the identified mosquito species was analysed using multilevel Poisson models with over-dispersion. The wild environment showed higher diversity and the semi-urban environment higher species richness. Despite having lower S and abundance, the urban environment showed greater diversity than semi-urban environment, although it also showed lower completeness, which means S could increase. Anthropogenic disturbance can lead to the elimination and/or modification or substitution of habitats, with the subsequent loss of richness in the more sensitive species of Culicidae fauna, although the conditions are also favourable for the settling of opportunistic and exotic species well-adjusted to disturbed environments. Most of the species abundances were positively influenced by the analysed climatic variables. The study area showed a rich Culicidae fauna of public health significance, with a risk of pathogen transmission, suggesting the need of further studies and the febrile and entomological surveillance.

ABSTRACT

Espécies de Rhodophyta de 10 Unidades de Conservação da região Sul do Brasil foram investigadas. As amostragens foram conduzidas em 105 segmentos de riachos consistindo em transeções de 10 m de comprimento. O levantamento florístico resultou em 80 populações representando três gêneros, Batrachospermum, Kumanoa e Hildenbrandia, além do estágios 'Chantransia'. Batrachospermum foi representado por cinco espécies (B. arcuatum Kylin, B. atrum (Hudson) Harvey, B. helminthosum Bory, B. keratophytum Bory, B. puiggarianum Grunow in Wittrock & Nordstedt). O gênero Kumanoa foi representado por K. abilii (Reis) Necchi Júnior & Vis e K. ambigua (Montagne) Entwisle et al., enquanto Hildenbrandia exclusivamente por H. angolensis W. West & G.S. West. Nossos resultados confirmam Batachospermum como o gênero melhor representado, em termos de número de espécies, entre as Rhdophyta de água doce. Batrachospermum arcuatum foi registrado pela primeira vez na região Sul do Brasil, ampliando assim, o limite austral de sua distribuição.


Species of Rhodophyta from 10 Conservation Units from the south region of Brazil were surveyed. The samplings were carried out in 105 stream reaches, consisting of 10 m length transects. The floristic survey involved 80 populations, representing three genera, Batrachospermum, Kumanoa and Hildenbrandia plus the 'Chantransia' stages. Batrachospermum was represented by five species (B. arcuatum Kylin, B. atrum (Hudson) Harvey, B. helminthosum Bory, B. keratophytum Bory and B. puiggarianum Grunow in Wittrock & Nordstedt). The genus Kumanoa was represented by K. abilii (Reis) Necchi Júnior & Vis and K. ambigua (Montagne) Entwisle et al., while Hildenbrandia only by H. angolensis W.West & G.S.West. Our results confirm Batachospermum as the best represented genus, in terms of species number, among freshwater Rhdophyta. B. arcuatum was a new record for the south region of Brazil, thus extending its austral distribution range.

ABSTRACT

OBJETIVO: Investigar estatisticamente a relação da sazonalidade com o período de nascimento, em 461 pacientes que apresentam esquizofrenia internados em três instituições de psiquiatria nas cidades de Araras, Itapira e Espírito Santo do Pinhal, localizadas no interior do Estado de São Paulo, região sudeste do Brasil. MÉTODO: Os dados coletados constam de datas e locais de nascimento dos referidos indivíduos, através dos quais se obteve os períodos estacionais dos nascimentos. Esses dados foram analisados através do teste Qui-quadrado. Também foram obtidos os dados de temperatura e precipitação pluvial nos anos de 1952 a 1986, correspondente aos anos de nascimento dos pacientes estudados. RESULTADOS: Estes mostraram uma maior prevalência de nascimentos nos meses de inverno (p = 0,0044) caracterizado nessa região por queda na temperatura e na precipitação pluviométrica. CONCLUSÃO: Os achados indicam uma possível influência da sazonalidade na patogênese de esquizofrenia e sugerem que o período de inverno nesta região poderia, juntamente com outros fatores, contribuir para o desenvolvimento tardio da esquizofrenia.

ABSTRACT

Estudos taxonômicos enfocando o inventário de macroalgas de ambientes lóticos em diferentes regiões são considerados importantes contribuições para o conhecimento básico destas comunidades algais. Neste contexto, o principal objetivo desta investigação foi realizar um levantamento florístico das comunidades de macroalgas da região centro-oeste do estado do Paraná, região Sul do Brasil, uma área de clima subtropical pouco investigada. Vinte e dois segmentos de rios/riachos foram amostrados através da técnica da transeção. Vinte e quatro táxons de macroalgas foram encontrados, incluindo 18 táxons subgenéricos e 6 grupos vegetativos. Chlorophyta foi a divisão com maior número de espécies (13 táxons = 54 por cento), seguida por Cyanophyta (cinco táxons = 21 por cento) e Rhodophyta e Heterokontophyta (3 táxons = 12,5 por cento cada uma). Phormidium retzii (C. Agardh) Gomont (Cyanophyta) foi a espécie melhor distribuída, e emaranhados de filamentos o tipo morfológico predominante. Apesar de todos os táxons já tenham sido previamente descritos para ambientes lóticos brasileiros, 5 espécies são novos registros para o estado do Paraná. Embora sem nenhuma espécie nova registrada, o levantamento taxonômico da região centro-oeste do estado do Paraná é extremamente relevante, uma vez que ele amplia as distribuições geográfica e ambiental das comunidades de macroalgas no Brasil.


Taxonomic studies focusing on the inventory of lotic macroalgae in different regions are important contributions to the basic knowledge for these algal communities. In this context, the main objective of this investigation was to accomplish a floristic survey of the stream macroalgal communities in the mid-west region of Paraná State, Southern Brazil, a poorly investigated subtropical area. Twenty-two stream segments were sampled by means of cross-transect technique. Twenty-four macroalgal taxa were found, including 18 subgeneric taxa and 6 vegetative groups. Chlorophyta was the most species rich division (13 taxa = 54 percent of the total), followed by Cyanophyta (five taxa = 21 percent) and Rhodophyta and Heterokontophyta (3 taxa = 12.5 percent). Phormidium retzii (C. Agardh) Gomont (Cyanophyta) was the most widespread species, and mats the predominant morphological type. Although all the macroalgal taxa had been previously described from Brazilian streams, 5 species are new records from Paraná State. Even with no additional species reported, the survey in the mid-west region of Paraná State are relevant, since it expanded the geographical and environmental distribution of the stream macroalgal communities in Brazil.

The present study aimed to determine the richness, occurrence constancy, reproductive modes, standard of abundance distribution, season of vocalization and to test correlation among climatic variables and activity of vocalization of anurans in a region of the Pampa Biome, Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul State. During the period of November/2001 to October/2002 monthly collections were carried out utilizing the ‘survey at breeding site method and examination of specimens kept in the Coleção Herpetológica do Setor de Zoologia da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (ZUFSM). The occurrence of 25 species of anurans was recorded. The anurofauna recorded represents 30% of the species known to occur in Rio Grande do Sul, and comprises species generally associated with grasslands in this state and neighboring countries. Four reproductive modes were recorded: mode 1 (14 species; 58.3%); mode 11 and 30 (9 species; 37.5%) and mode 24 (1 species; 4.2%). The low diversification of reproductive modes is likely related to the homogeneity of the grassland habitat. Most species were constant or accessory in the study area and the species abundance distribution patterns fit in the Broken Stick and Log-normal models, characterized by homogeneity of species abundance distribution. Most species showed great plasticity in habitat, but few were plastic in vocalization sites use. There was a weak positive correlation between species richness and precipitation. There was also a weak positive correlation between the abundance of species calling activity and maximum average temperatures. These correlations indicated that, in the study area, the abundance of calling males is more affected by the temperature, and species richness is more affected by precipitation, despite the fact that significantly higher species richness occurs during the hottest period of the year. These results showed that the climatological variables examined were not enough to explain the seasonal occurrence of species, thus the influence of other environmental variables merit to be tested in future studies.


Este estudo teve como objetivo determinar a riqueza, a constância de ocorrência, os modos reprodutivos, o padrão de distribuição da abundância, a temporada de vocalização e testar a correlação das variáveis climáticas sobre a atividade de vocalização dos anuros em uma região do Bioma Pampa, Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul. Durante o período de novembro de 2001 a outubro de 2002 foram realizadas coletas mensais empregando o método de ‘busca em sítio de reprodução e exame de exemplares depositados na Coleção Herpetológica do Setor de Zoologia da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (ZUFSM). Foi registrada a ocorrência de 25 espécies de anuros. A anurofauna registrada corresponde a 30% das espécies encontradas no Rio Grande do Sul e normalmente está associada a áreas abertas encontradas no estado e em países vizinhos. Foram registrados quatro modos reprodutivos: modo 1 (14 espécies; 58,3%); modos 11 e 30 (nove espécies; 37,5%) e modo 24 (uma espécie; 4,2%). A baixa diversificação de modos reprodutivos provavelmente está relacionada à homogeneidade do hábitat primariamente campestre. A maior parte das espécies mostrou-se constante ou acessória na área estudada e o padrão de distribuição da abundância das espécies apresentou ajuste aos modelos Broken Stick e Log-normal, caracterizados pela homogeneidade na distribuição da abundância das espécies. A maioria das espécies apresentou grande plasticidade na ocupação de hábitats, mas poucas foram plásticas no uso dos sítios de vocalização. Houve correlação positiva, ainda que fraca, da riqueza de espécies com a precipitação mensal acumulada e da abundância com a temperatura média máxima. As correlações obtidas indicaram que na área estudada a temperatura parece atuar mais sobre a abundância de machos em atividade de vocalização e a precipitação sobre a riqueza, apesar da riqueza de espécies ser significativamente maior durante o período mais quente do ano. Estes resultados revelaram que as variáveis climatológicas testadas explicaram muito pouco da ocorrência sazonal das espécies, assim a influência de outras variáveis ambientais merece ser testada em estudos futuros.

ABSTRACT

From December 1995 to November 2000, the seasonal maturation of Glypthelmins vitellinophilum Dobbin, 1958, in its definitive host, the frog Lysapsus limellus Cope, 1862, was studied in a subtropical permanent pond in northeastern Argentina. The objectives of this study were: 1) to determine the infrapopulation dynamics of the parasite, analyzing the seasonal maturation cycle throughout the years; and 2) to examine the relationship between the intensity of trematode infection in different developmental stages (recruitment, growth and maturation) and the host's body length. Of a total of 1,400 frogs examined over 60 months (5 years), 38% were found to be infected with G. vitellinophilum, and the intensity of infection was 1-15 trematodes per frog. Specimens of G. vitellinophilum were present in L. limellus throughout the years, but did not show a pronounced seasonal maturation cycle. Possible reasons for these findings are discussed with reference to climatic fluctuations and biotic factors. The infective period of the parasite (stage I) occurred in summer, autumn and spring, coinciding with the time each frog cohort appeared. These infections were found principally in small body sizes (classes 1 and 2) of L. limellus. Juvenile and nongravid specimens of worms (stage II and III) were found in frogs of different body sizes throughout the period of investigation. Gravid specimens of the parasite (stage IV) were generally recorded in autumn, winter and spring, mainly in the bodies of larger frogs. The body length of Trematodes in stages I and IV was significantly and positively correlated with that of the frogs.


De dezembro de 1995 a novembro de 2000, a maturação sazonal de Glypthelmins vitellinophilum Dobbin, 1958, em seu hospedeiro definitivo, a rã Lysapsus limellus Cope, 1862, foi estudada em uma lagoa permanente subtropical no nordeste da Argentina. Os objetivos deste estudo foram: 1) determinar a dinâmica de infrapopulação do parasita, analisando o ciclo de maturação sazonal ao longo dos anos; e 2) examinar a relação entre intensidade de infecção do trematódeo em diferentes estádios do desenvolvimento (recrutamento, crescimento e maturação) e o comprimento de corpo da rã. De 1.400 espécimens de rãs em 60 meses (5 anos), foram achados 38% infetados com G. vitellinophilum, e a intensidade de infecção era 1-15 trematódeos por rã. Estas infecções eram principalmente registradas em tamanhos de corpo pequenos (classes 1 e 2) de L. limellus. Espécimes de parasitas juvenis e não grávidas (estádios II e III) eram encontradas em diferentes tamanhos de rãs ao longo do período de investigação. Espécimes de parasitas grávidas (estádio IV) eram geralmente registradas no outono, inverno e primavera, principalmente nos tamanhos de corpo maiores de rãs. O comprimento de corpo do trematódeo dos estádios I e IV eram significativa e positivamente correlatos com o comprimento de corpo da rã.

ABSTRACT

From December 1995 to November 2000, the seasonal maturation of Glypthelmins vitellinophilum Dobbin, 1958, in its definitive host, the frog Lysapsus limellus Cope, 1862, was studied in a subtropical permanent pond in northeastern Argentina. The objectives of this study were: 1) to determine the infrapopulation dynamics of the parasite, analyzing the seasonal maturation cycle throughout the years; and 2) to examine the relationship between the intensity of trematode infection in different developmental stages (recruitment, growth and maturation) and the host's body length. Of a total of 1,400 frogs examined over 60 months (5 years), 38% were found to be infected with G. vitellinophilum, and the intensity of infection was 1-15 trematodes per frog. Specimens of G. vitellinophilum were present in L. limellus throughout the years, but did not show a pronounced seasonal maturation cycle. Possible reasons for these findings are discussed with reference to climatic fluctuations and biotic factors. The infective period of the parasite (stage I) occurred in summer, autumn and spring, coinciding with the time each frog cohort appeared. These infections were found principally in small body sizes (classes 1 and 2) of L. limellus. Juvenile and nongravid specimens of worms (stage II and III) were found in frogs of different body sizes throughout the period of investigation. Gravid specimens of the parasite (stage IV) were generally recorded in autumn, winter and spring, mainly in the bodies of larger frogs. The body length of Trematodes in stages I and IV was significantly and positively correlated with that of the frogs.


De dezembro de 1995 a novembro de 2000, a maturação sazonal de Glypthelmins vitellinophilum Dobbin, 1958, em seu hospedeiro definitivo, a rã Lysapsus limellus Cope, 1862, foi estudada em uma lagoa permanente subtropical no nordeste da Argentina. Os objetivos deste estudo foram: 1) determinar a dinâmica de infrapopulação do parasita, analisando o ciclo de maturação sazonal ao longo dos anos; e 2) examinar a relação entre intensidade de infecção do trematódeo em diferentes estádios do desenvolvimento (recrutamento, crescimento e maturação) e o comprimento de corpo da rã. De 1.400 espécimens de rãs em 60 meses (5 anos), foram achados 38% infetados com G. vitellinophilum, e a intensidade de infecção era 1-15 trematódeos por rã.
