ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Early detection of obesity-promoting dietary behavior patterns improves the identification of at-risk families and the implementation of interventions. This is accomplished through the use of the Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ). No study has been conducted using the CEBQ in children followed in Essonne's Maternal-Infant Protection (PMI) centers. We investigated, in a cross-sectional design, the differences in children's eating behavior with PMI follow-up according to their weight status. METHODS: A questionnaire addressed to parents was collected in PMI centers. Multiple hierarchical regression analysis was used to investigate the predictability of the child's CEBQ on body mass index (BMI). RESULTS: From January to April 2022, 850 children were selected, from which 500 (aged 1-6 years) were included, and of whom 10.6% were obese. There was a significant positive association between 'Food Responsiveness', 'Enjoyment of Food' and BMI. In contrast, there was a significant negative association between 'Satiety Responsiveness', 'Slowness in Eating' and BMI. Besides, 'Food approach' and 'food avoidance' behaviors were positively and negatively related to BMI z-scores, respectively. CONCLUSION: Due to significant differences in children's eating behavior according to their weight, it is needed to raise awareness among parents about their impact on them.

ABSTRACT

In August 2020, the observations of total peroxy radical concentrations were carried out in the western suburb site of Hefei using a peroxy radical chemical amplifier (PERCA) instrument. The ozone production and its sensitivity were characterized with the measured O3 and its precursors. The results showed that the daily variation in total peroxy radical concentrations exhibited an obvious convex tend, with the highest value at approximately 12:00; the average peak peroxy radical concentration was 43.8×10-12; and the concentrations of the peroxy radical and ozone were driven by strong solar radiation and high temperature. The photochemical ozone production rate could be determined with peroxy radical and NO concentration. The average ozone peak production rate in summer was 10.6×10-9 h-1, which was more sensitive to NO concentration. Based on the ratio of the radical loss rate due to reactions with NOx to the radical loss rate (Ln/Q), the characteristics of O3 production in the western suburb of Hefei in summer were analyzed. The results showed that O3 production sensitivity varied greatly during the day. The summer O3 production regime shifted from the VOC-sensitive chemistry in the early morning to NOx-sensitive chemistry in the afternoon, and this regime transition typically occurred in the morning.

ABSTRACT

Aim: To investigate (1) the association between pre-hospital emergency medical resources and pre-hospital emergency medical system (EMS) response time among patients with Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA); (2) whether the association differs between urban and suburbs. Methods: Densities of ambulances and physicians were independent variables, respectively. Pre-hospital emergency medical system response time was dependent variable. Multivariate linear regression was used to investigate the roles of ambulance density and physician density in pre-hospital EMS response time. Qualitative data were collected and analyzed to explore reasons for the disparities in pre-hospital resources between urban areas and suburbs. Results: Ambulance density and physician density were both negatively associated with call to ambulance dispatch time, with odds ratios (ORs) 0.98 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.96-0.99; P = 0.001) and 0.97 (95% CI; 0.93-0.99; P < 0.001), respectively. ORs of ambulance density and physician density in association with total response time were 0.99 (95% CI: 0.97-0.99; P = 0.013) and 0.90 (95% CI: 0.86-0.99; P = 0.048). The effect of ambulance density on call to ambulance dispatch time in urban areas was 14% smaller than that in suburb areas and that on total response time in urban areas was 3% smaller than the effect in suburbs. Similar effects were identified for physician density on urban-suburb disparities in call to ambulance dispatch time and total response time. The main reasons summarized from stakeholders for a lack of physicians and ambulances in suburbs included low income, poor personal incentive mechanisms, and inequality in financial distribution of the healthcare system. Conclusion: Improving pre-hospital emergency medical resources allocation can reduce system delay and narrow urban-suburb disparity in EMS response time for OHCA patients.

ABSTRACT

The main objective of this study is to assess the impacts of cooking and indoor air quality (IAQ) in the southwestern region of Bangladesh. Here we report and compare the IAQ in considering a total of eight kitchens and living rooms of four selected households (HHs) in Jashore city and suburb area, the southwest district of Bangladesh. Air quality parameters, such as particulate matter (PM2.5) and volatile organic compounds (VOC), were assessed continuously for 24 h. In addition, Carbon dioxide (CO2) was evaluated in different phases during the study period. PM2.5, VOC, and CO2 levels were ranged from 18.52 to 207 µg/m3, 7.95-35.66 ppm, and 1061-2459 mg/m3, respectively, in the indoor cooking HHs. Conversely, while the average concentration was found between 20.63 and 23.72 µg/m3 PM2.5, 11.18-12.36 ppm VOC, and 1097-1747 mg/m3 CO2 in the outdoor cooking HHs. A significant increase in CO2 due to kitchen activities (cooking, frying, boiling) was observed that ranged between 5 and 77% compared to the background level. The calculated range of toxicity potential (TP) values was between 0.8 and 8.3 for PM2.5 in the HHs. In most of the observations, PM2.5, VOC, and CO2 exceed the standard values. The study reports that well ventilation systems and clean fuel use significantly reduce the indoor air contaminants level. Our study offers new insights about the IAQ of the southwest region of Bangladesh, particularly for suburbs and urban setups, and provides a background for further study, and decision-making. It will serve as a reference for the formulation and implementation of policies to improve air quality.

RESUMO Este trabalho buscou pesquisar as relações de um grupo de jovens moradores de regiões periféricas de uma cidade do interior de Minas Gerais com os espaços de casa e da cidade, por meio dos significados e das experiências vivenciadas nesses locais, em interlocução com o referencial teórico do psicodrama. As metodologias utilizadas foram: relato de experiência de um sociodrama realizado antes da pandemia de Covid-19 e, posteriormente, entrevistas semiestruturadas analisadas por meio da teoria fundamentada nos dados. A ocupação dos espaços comunitários de forma criativa, a extensão das relações solidárias no bairro, a praça como espaço da diversidade e também de repressão foram resultados encontrados. O psicodrama pode contribuir como ferramenta significativa para análise dos contextos sociais e espaciais em interlocução com os processos subjetivos de forma crítica, reafirmando seu compromisso social e o direito à cidade.


ABSTRACT This work aimed to investigate the relationships of a group of young people living in suburb regions of a city in the interior of Minas Gerais with social places, based on the meanings and experiences in the home and city environments, in dialogue with the theoretical framework of psychodrama. The methodologies used were experience report of a sociodrama performed before the COVID-19 pandemic and, subsequently, semi-structured interviews analyzed by grounded theory methodology. The occupation of community places in a creative way, the extension of solidarity relationships in the neighborhood, the square as a space of diversity and also of repression were the research findings. Psychodrama can contribute as a significant tool for the analysis of social and spatial contexts in dialogue with subjective processes in a critical way, reaffirming its social commitment and the right to the city.


RESUMEN Este trabajo buscó investigar las relaciones de un grupo de jóvenes que viven en regiones periféricas de una ciudad del interior de Minas Gerais con los espacios del hogar y de la ciudad, a partir de los significados y experiencias en esos ambientes, en diálogo con el referencial teórico del Psicodrama. Las metodologías utilizadas fueron: relato de experiencia de un sociodrama realizado antes de la pandemia de la Covid-19 y, posteriormente, entrevistas semiestructuradas analizadas mediante Teoría Fundamentada en los Datos. La ocupación de los espacios comunitarios de forma creativa, la ampliación de las relaciones solidarias en lo barrio, la plaza como espacio de diversidad y también de represión fueron los resultados encontrados. El psicodrama puede contribuir como una herramienta significativa para el análisis de los contextos sociales y espaciales en diálogo con los procesos subjetivos de una manera crítica, reafirmando su compromiso social y el derecho a la ciudad.

ABSTRACT

AMA GC5000BTX was used to monitor the mixing ratio of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p-xylene, o-xylene, and styrene (BTESX) in the atmosphere of the northern suburb of Nanjing from January 2014 to December 2016. The temporal variation characteristics of BTESX and the influence of meteorological elements on it were analyzed, and the characteristic ratio method (T/B) was used to qualitatively analyze the source of BTESX. Finally, the human exposure analysis and evaluation method of EPA was used to evaluate the health risk of BTESX. The results showed that during the observation period, the average mixing ratio of BTESX was (7.28±6.63)×10-9, and the mixing ratio of benzene was the highest at (2.45±3.91)×10-9. The mixing ratio of other species from large to small was toluene>ethylbenzene>m,p-xylene>o-xylene>styrene, which were (2.41±2.61)×10-9, (1.37±1.28)×10-9, (0.51±0.48)×10-9, (0.3±0.36)×10-9, and (0.22±0.42)×10-9, respectively. Due to the existence of stable aromatic sources, the monthly and seasonal variation in BTESX mixing ratio was not as obvious as that of other species (NOx, CO, SO2, PM2.5, etc.). The weekend effect of BTESX and other pollutants was not significant. The mixing ratio of BTESX was largely affected by the short distance transportation of chemical enterprises and traffic trunk roads in the northeast, resulting in a large mixing ratio of BTESX in the northeast. The mixing ratio of BTESX was jointly affected by relative humidity and temperature, and its high value area was mainly located in the range of 30%-70% relative humidity. In this range of relative humidity, the high value range of BTESX volume fraction increased with the elevation of temperature. The HI (hazard index) of BTESX in different seasons was within the safety range recognized by EPA, whereas the R (carcinogenic risk of benzene) value was higher than the safety threshold specified by EPA. At the same time, the HI and R values were higher in summer, to which great attention should be paid.

The deprived area of the Metzinger Valley in the city of Mahajanga has many healthcare concerns due to repeated flooding during the rainy season. Improving this health situation requires a better knowledge of the pathogens present in this area and of the risk factors favoring their propagation. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between the household socioeconomic status and the presence of parasites in the faeces of children between 1 and 10 years of age in order to determine the risk factors for intestinal parasitosis. The study included 746 children, of whom 30% were infected with parasites. Entamoeba coli, a good indicator of environmental fecal contamination, was the most prevalent parasite with an observation frequency of 16.7% followed by Giardia lamblia with a prevalence of 10%. For helminths, Trichuris and Ascaris were the most prevalent respectively 5.4% and 1.8%. A large heterogeneity in the prevalence of parasites was observed from one neighborhood to another. However, multivariate analysis showed that these differences were not related to environmental factors or household structure, but rather to the economic level of the family, the education level of the mother as well as the age of the child. For example, the prevalence of Giardia decreased from 23.5% to 8% for children of mothers with little education to those with higher education, respectively. For E. coli, the prevalence is higher among poor households and school-aged children. In the frame of IRCOD project, mothers are being sensitized to hygiene and risk factors for transmission by intestinal parasites and the present study proposes a multidimensional approach as an assessment tool.

ABSTRACT

Carbonaceous aerosol is an important component of atmospheric fine particles that has an important impact on air quality, human health, and climate change. In order to explore the long-term changes in carbonaceous aerosol under the background of emission reduction, this study measured the mass concentrations of organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) of PM2.5, which collected in the northern suburbs of Nanjing for five years (December 17, 2014 to January 5, 2020). The results showed that the five-year average ρ(OC) and ρ(EC) were (10.2±5.3) µg·m-3 and (1.6±1.1) µg·m-3, accounting for 31.1% and 5.2% of PM2.5, respectively. OC and EC concentrations were both high in winter and low in summer. According to the nonparametric Mann-Kendall test and Sen's slope, the mass concentrations of OC and PM2.5 decreased significantly[OC:P<0.0001, -0.79 µg·(m3·a)-1, -0.29%·a-1; PM2.5:P<0.0001, -4.59 µg·(m3·a)-1, -1.58%·a-1]. Although EC had an upward trend, the significance and range of change were not obvious[P=0.02, 0.05 µg·(m3·a)-1, 0.02%·a-1]. OC and EC decreased significantly during winter from 2014 to 2019[OC:P<0.0001, -2.05 µg·(m3·a)-1, -0.74%·a-1; EC:P=0.001, -0.15 µg·(m3·a)-1, -0.05%·a-1], and the decline was more obvious than the whole. The correlation between OC and EC showed that the sources in winter and summer were more complex than those in spring and autumn. According to the characteristic ratio of OC and EC, the contribution of coal combustion and biomass burning decreased from 2015 to 2019, whereas the impact of industrial sources and vehicle emissions became more significant. Corresponding to this was the obvious decline in OC and the slight recovery of EC. The OC/EC ratio was over 2.0, indicating that there was secondary pollution in the study area. Further calculation revealed that the variation in SOC was consistent with that in OC, showing a significant decrease[P<0.0001, -0.47 µg·(m3·a)-1, -0.17%·a-1]. The average mass concentration of SOC was (5.0±3.5) µg·m-3, accounting for 49.2% of OC. These changes indicate clear effects of the prevention and control of air pollution in Nanjing in recent years. Furthermore, future control can focus on the emissions of VOCs to reduce secondary pollution.

Background: Few longitudinal studies have explored exploring the relationship between sleep duration and sarcopenia. Evidence concerning the relationship between sleep duration and sarcopenia is limited and inconsistent. The purpose of this 3-year prospective study was to explore whether sleep duration was associated with sarcopenia onset in suburb-dwelling older Chinese individuals. Methods: This was a prospective study that included 754 Chinese suburb-dwelling men and women aged ≥60 years (men n=327, mean age 65.24± 4.87 years) who were not initially diagnosed with sarcopenia. We defined sarcopenia using the diagnostic algorithm recommended by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia. Self-reported sleep duration was a component of the interview measured by trained interviewers. Subjects were categorized into 3 groups at baseline [short: <6 h, medium: 6-8 h, and long: >8 h]. Results: The incidence of sarcopenia during the 3-year follow-up was 12.2%. Multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that after adjustments for potential confounders long sleep duration was independently associated with sarcopenia incidence from baseline through the 3-year follow-up: when using the 6-8 h sleep duration group as a reference, the adjusted ORs for sarcopenia of the groups who slept <6 and >8 hours were 2.74 (95% CI 1.05-7.13) and 1.84 (95% CI 1.07-3.14). Conclusion: Both short and long sleep durations were associated with a greater incidence of sarcopenia. Thus, sleep duration should be considered when developing prevention and management strategies for sarcopenia.

ABSTRACT

The USA is the leading emitter of greenhouse gases among the developed countries, in part because it is the only developed country with more of its population in suburbs than in cities. Cities produce less greenhouse gas emissions per capita than suburbs. Meanwhile, the US and the world have been wrestling with the public health emergency of the COVID-19 pandemic. But as US cities recover from the pandemic, they are unlikely to add more population than their suburbs because of changes in favor of working from home, online shopping, and the search for more affordable housing and green space, as well as concerns about population density and contagious diseases. So, the challenge is how to design and redevelop suburbs to make them more environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable to address both climate change and the threat of future pandemics. A sustainable suburb scenario offers an alternative to the sprawling development, separation of land uses and income classes, and automobile dependence that characterizes the typical American suburban landscape. This essay reviews the literature on re-designing suburbs and describes and evaluates both a business-as-usual suburb scenario and a sustainable suburb scenario. Though challenges exist, sustainable suburbs will be needed in order to reduce US greenhouse gas emissions, to achieve greater resilience in adapting to the effects of climate change, and to guard against future pandemics while providing economic opportunities and greater equity over the long run.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality resulting from pregnancy and delivery complications is a sensitive indicator of women's status in the society, access to care services, and sufficiency and quality of healthcare and is the major indicator of a country's developmental status. The present study aimed at determination of educational needs regarding safe motherhood from suburban women's perspective. METHOD: This qualitative study with conventional content analysis approach was conducted in suburban healthcare centers of Alborz University of medical sciences from 23 October to 22 December 2019. The participants included 15 eligible Iranian suburban women who were selected through purposive sampling. The data were collected via in-depth semi-structured interviews and focus groups. Data were analyzes with MAXQDA10 software. RESULTS: Three main themes emerged from the analysis of the data (barriers against safe pregnancy, accountability multidimensional training, and threats and opportunities of distance learning), six categories, 11 subcategories and 547 codes. DISCUSSION: The results indicated that suburban women were less probable to be present in healthcare centers and receive the required information compared to their peers due to their conditions; provision of accessible training services appropriated to their conditions can greatly contribute to elimination of these problems.

ABSTRACT

Studies from around the globe have found that urbanicity is associated with greater risk for certain psychiatric disorders, though the association has been less evident in the United States. We analyzed data collected in 2019 from the RAND American Life Panel (n = 2554), which were representative of the general adult population of the United States. Using multivariable logistic regression, we examined the associations between environment of birthplace (large urban, small urban, suburban, rural) and psychiatric disorders, adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics. We found that being born in a large urban area was associated with greater odds of having any psychiatric disorder when compared with being born in a rural area. However, when looking at specific disorders, we found that being born in a large urban area was only significantly associated greater odds of anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but was not associated with bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or alcohol/substance use disorder. Being born in a small urban area was marginally associated with anxiety disorder. Future studies should examine why urban birthplace has only been associated with anxiety disorders and PTSD in the United States, and why urbanicity is associated with mood disorders in other parts of the world but not in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: Osteoporosis can lead to bone fragility and an increased risk of bone fracture with resultant high morbidity and mortality. Living alone has been associated with various mental and physical health problems. However, the risk of osteoporosis among individuals with different living conditions and changing living conditions is unclear. We examined the risk of osteoporosis in different living conditions over a 3-year period in community-dwelling suburban elderly Chinese. METHODS: This study involved 288 elderly Chinese suburb-dwelling participants with no documented history of osteoporosis. All were aged ≥60 years (mean, 65.6±3.75 years; 157 men). A quantitative ultrasound scan of the calcaneus with a T score of <-2.5 was used to identify a high risk of osteoporosis. RESULTS: In total, 54.2% of participants were determined to have a high risk of osteoporosis (male, 51.6%; female, 57.3%). People who had always lived alone had a significantly higher risk of osteoporosis, even after adjusting for potential confounders. A change from living alone to living with others had no significant impact on the risk of osteoporosis. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that living alone is associated with a high risk of osteoporosis. Thus, people who live alone may need regular bone tests to avoid adverse events.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: to describe hospitalisation, access to emergency care, and mortality of people living in marginalized urban areas which include public housing buildings in the North-West suburb of Rome, and to compare the results with those observed among people living in the neighbouring area. DESIGN: cross sectional study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: resident population in the XIII and XIV Municipality of Rome, subdivided into five urban areas, in 2011-2018. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: hospitalisation, access to emergency care, and mortality rates and rates ratios based on hospital discharges and emergency department visits derived from the Health Information Systems and from the Mortality Registry of Lazio Region (Central Italy), stratified by urban areas. RESULTS: the results show a higher use of hospital assistance and emergency care services as well a higher mortality among residents of urban areas characterized by marginalization and social disadvantage in the North-West suburb in Rome, compared to the surrounding area. The association is stronger for the residents of ex-Bastogi, a compound particularly marginalised and socially disadvantaged, where excesses in hospitalisation, emergency care admission, and mortality of +60%, +150%, and +140%, respectively, occurred. CONCLUSIONS: the excesses of hospital use, emergency care visits, and mortality observed among the residents of marginalized urban areas suggest the need to reorganize the preventive and primary care services considering the socioeconomic disadvantage in such housing contexts. The use of both qualitative and quantitative approaches allows to understand the complexity of such contexts.

ABSTRACT

In this study, long-term continuous monitoring of atmospheric new particle formation was conducted from 2015 to 2017 in the Shanghai suburbs using a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS). Combined with meteorological parameters, gaseous pollutants, and PM2.5 chemical composition data, the characterization of new particle formation was analyzed. The results of data analysis showed there were 172 new particle formation (NPF) days in the Shanghai suburbs, accounting for 18.3% of the total effective days (942 d). Typical new particle formation days (Event) and new particle growth-shrinkage (Shrinkage) days were 150 d and 32 d, respectively. The frequency of NPF occurrence was the highest in spring and summer, followed by autumn and winter. Compared with non-new particle formation (Non-NPF) days, Event and Shrinkage days had higher temperature and wind speed, lower humidity, less rainfall, and stronger solar radiation. The ratio of Event days was the highest when the prevailing wind was southerly, southwesterly, or westerly, and when the air masses were mainly from the vegetation cover and agricultural planting areas in the Taihu Lake Basin. The prevailing wind directions for Non-NPF and Shrinkage days were northeasterly and easterly to southeasterly. On the Event days, SO2 and O3 were higher than that on the Non-NPF days, indicating gaseous sulfuric acid and photochemical reactions were key contributors to new particle formation. Higher PM10 concentration was detected on the Event days than on the Non-NPF days, which may be attributed to the photocatalytic reaction. All the pollutant concentrations were the lowest on Shrinkage days, except that of O3. The average concentrations of inorganic components of PM2.5, such as NH4+, SO42-, and NO3- were higher on Event than on Non-NPF days in fall, whereas the opposite results were observed in other seasons. The average concentration of organic carbon on Event days was higher than that on Non-NPF days in each season. The concentrations of PM2.5 components on Shrinkage days were the lowest. However, the ratio of organic carbon on Shrinkage days was higher than that on Non-NPF days in spring, summer, and winter. The higher ratio of organic carbon on the NPF days than on the Non-NPF days suggested an important role of organic matter in the formation and growth of new particles in the suburbs of Shanghai.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study tries to evaluate, through a multidisciplinary approach, the relationship between urban structure, isolation and distribution of social determinants of health, in the so-called "formerly-Bastogi, a compound, with more than 1,500 inhabitants, located in north-western Rome, Italy. METHODS: The architectural-urban analysis, conducted through site visits and evaluations of urban situation, showed how strongly the compound is isolated from the neighbourhoods, and structurally degraded. The socio-demographic analysis, based on the National Census data, showed significant differences in the distribution of the social determinants of health between "formerly-Bastogi" and the surrounding areas. RESULTS: The area under study appears to be isolated from the surrounding urban space, both because of social and architectural factors. This situation could have some association with inhabitants' health. CONCLUSIONS: If our preliminary investigation was useful for a diagnosis of the situation, a more complete - qualitative and quantitative - investigation of the context will be needed to plan appropriate multidisciplinary health-promoting interventions.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine the effect of physical factors of apartments, educational attainment, nationality and unemployment on the number and distribution of bed bug call inquiries in Budapest, Hungary. METHODS: Educational attainment, apartment conditions, the level of unemployment, the ratio of dependent people in the households, nationality and proportion of dependent people were selected as regressors. Monthly ambient temperature values were correlated with monthly call inquiry numbers. RESULTS: Downtown units showed the highest call inquiry rates. Significant positive correlations were found between the call inquiry rates and the ratio of low educational attainment inhabitants (people with ≤ 8 school classes), the rate of small floor area apartments (apartment area < 29 m2), proportions of the comfortless apartments in the district housing stock and proportion of unemployed people on district level as well as proportion of gypsy inhabitants in the districts. Significant negative correlation was found between the call inquiry rates and the average area (m2) of apartments. The number of call inquiries showed expressed, temperature-depending seasonality between March and December 2015. In multiple regression analyses, the level of unemployment and proportion of gypsy inhabitants showed significant correlations with the rate of bed bug call inquiries. CONCLUSIONS: Apartment conditions, educational attainment, nationality, unemployment, and the city structure have notable influence on the occurrence of bed bug call inquiries on urban level, although the level of unemployment and nationality seem to be the strongest factors. The annual changes of the ambient temperature have effect on the call inquiry rate.

ABSTRACT

Due to the extensive use in consumer products, the bisphenols (BPs) pollution in the environments has aggravated and people are frequently exposed to BPs. In this research, four BPs, i.e., bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol F (BPF), bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol AF (BPAF), were determined in urine samples collected from Gaochun District preschool-age children and the concentrations, distribution profiles, potential sources and cumulative risk assessment of the target compounds were studied. Total concentrations of 4 BPs ranged from 2 to 3113.1 ng/L, with the average concentration of 648.6 ng/L. BPA was the predominant congener (accounting for 94%), followed by BPS. Correlation analysis indicated a negative relationship between BPA and BPAF (R = -0.273, p < 0.05). The estimated daily intakes suggested that young females were more sensitive to BPs. Moreover, the cumulative risk for hazard quotient (HQ) of BPA has been evaluated and the results showed that no high risk had occurred. It provided basic information on the occurrence and human exposure to urinary BPs of preschool aged children from Gaochun District.

ABSTRACT

Spatial accessibility is an important factor for planning healthcare services to maintain a quality life for the metropolitan area. The metropolitan suburb is a special area for its location and rapidly changing population during urbanization. Taking Qingpu district, a suburb of Shanghai as a case, this study evaluated the spatial accessibility to healthcare services of 203 villages and neighborhoods based on the Two-Step Floating Catchment Area (2SFCA) method by ArcGIS software. The result shows that the spatial accessibility in the whole district is quite uneven under lower thresholds, and the spatial differences are beyond the traditional zoning of East Qingpu, New City and West Qingpu. The worst accessibility was mainly distributed at the edges of Jinze, Liantang and Zhujiajiao, while the best accessibility was mainly distributed in the New City and the region close around it. The average value of the spatial accessibility in Qingpu is 2.84, with a reach equal under 90 min threshold by bus index of 2.85, or an under 60 min threshold by self-driving index of 2.70. Secondly, the difference shows a new pattern, that is the spatial accessibility could be affected by both the New City and the Central City. Thirdly, the transportation mode, urbanization, the density of road network and bus lines, as well as the number of doctors in each healthcare service would directly affect the spatial accessibility. Lastly, in order to improve the spatial accessibility in metropolitan suburbs, greater effort is needed in increasing the numbers of bus stations and doctors, especially the areas which are farthest from the New City or the Central City, such as Jinze, and Lian Tang town in Qingpu. We acknowledge that the public transportation is vital to the accessibility to healthcare services. We also emphasize that healthcare services should be planned based on the anticipated future trends of population agglomeration. Our results for Shanghai are applicable to other big cities that are experiencing similar rapid urbanization in China, or other developing countries in Southeast Asia, South Asia, South America and Africa.

Epidemiological studies report that more than half of the people over the age of 65 years suffer from variable sleep problems. In this study, we conducted a cohort study to investigate the relationship between sleep duration, muscle mass, and function within a community-dwelling, elderly Chinese population. Our study population consisted of residents living in the township central hospital of suburban Tianjin, China. We measured muscle strength and walking speed. We divided sleep duration into the following four groups: <7 hours, 7-8 hours, >8-9 hours, and >9 hours. A total of 902 participants completed the 3-year follow-up. We observed a U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and fall risk. Compared with the 7-8-hour group, fall risk within the <7-hour group was 3.67 (2.59, 5.42) times higher and fall risk within the >9-hour group was 2.35 (1.29, 3.52) times higher. After adjustment, muscle mass declined by -6.82% (-11.27%, -3.83%) in the <7-hour group. In summary, we observed a U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and falls. Short sleep duration has a negative relationship with muscle mass decline in a community-dwelling, elderly Chinese population.
