ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the influencing factors of hospitalization cost of hypertensive patients in TCM (traditional Chinese medicine, TCM) hospitals, which can provide a scientific basis for hospitals to control the hospitalization cost of hypertension. Methods: In this study, 3,595 hospitalized patients with a primary diagnosis of tertiary hypertension in Tianshui City Hospital of TCM, Gansu Province, China, from January 2017 to June 2022, were used as research subjects. Using univariate analysis to identify the relevant variables of hospitalization cost, followed by incorporating the statistically significant variables of univariate analysis as independent variables in multiple linear regression analysis, and establishing the path model based on the results of the multiple linear regression finally, to explore the factors influencing hospitalization cost comprehensively. Results: The results showed that hospitalization cost of hypertension patients were mainly influenced by length of stay, age, admission pathways, payment methods of medical insurance, and visit times, with length of stay being the most critical factor. Conclusion: The Chinese government should actively exert the characteristics and advantages of TCM in the treatment of chronic diseases such as hypertension, consistently optimize the treatment plans of TCM, effectively reduce the length of stay and steadily improve the health literacy level of patients, to alleviate the illnesses pain and reduce the economic burden of patients.

ABSTRACT

(1) Background: This study aims to understand the factors influencing hospitalization cost related to diabetes mellitus in two traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) hospitals, and to provide a scientific basis for TCM hospitals to control the hospitalization cost of chronic diseases, including diabetes mellitus. (2) Methods: Univariate analysis was used to preliminarily screen the factors related to hospitalization cost, and then multiple linear regression and path models were comprehensively used to analyze the influencing factors of hospitalization cost. (3) Results: The cost of hospitalization for diabetic patients was mainly affected by hospital level, length of stay, type of diabetes, and complications and comorbidities, and hospital level was the most critical influencing factor. (4) Conclusions: The higher the Chinese medicine hospital level, the longer the length of stay, and the more severe the complications and comorbidities, the higher the hospitalization cost for diabetic patients. The Chinese government should continue to promote the tiered medical treatment system and improve the standard of treatment at TCM hospitals to reduce the economic burden of chronic diseases, including diabetes mellitus.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Traditional medicine has been widely used to address relatively common illnesses. In this regard, Chinese government has been continually topping up its investments on public Traditional Chinese Medicine hospitals (PTHs) in recent years. This study aimed to assess the optimal scales and structure of the investments in Henan province by analyzing the contribution of Government Financial Investment (GFI) to the efficiency and revenue growth of PTHs as well as recommending proper investment strategies for implementation to policy-makers. METHODS: This study was a panel data study, conducted in Henan Province, China. By collecting 143 PTHs' operational data from the year 2005 to 2017, Barro Economic Growth (BEG) model, Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) and Vector Autoregressive (VAR) model were used to assess the efficiency and PTHs revenue. RESULTS: The study observed the positive contribution of GFI to PTHs' revenue growth (average MPG = 2.84), indicating that the GFI had not reached the required optimal level of "Barro Law". In order to maximize the input-output efficiency, the scales of GFI on Grade III, Grade II A, Grade II B PTHs need to be increased by - 5.96, 4.88 and 11.51%, respectively. The third year following the first investment may be a more essential period for conducting an effective GFI evaluation in Henan Province. CONCLUSIONS: GFI on PTHs usually has a long-term impact on PTHs. Governments can adjust its GFI policy so as to maximize the input-output efficiency.

ABSTRACT

Objective To screen TCM dominant diseases from service efficiency, service quality and security by taking a three-A-grade TCM hospital as example. Methods According to the diagnosis related data of the TCM hospital, the common diseases in major disease categories (MDC) were screened out. Average cost of hospitalization, average hospitalization days, antibiotic use rates, blood use rates, and mortality rates were compared with the average level of tertiary general hospitals. Results Totally 27 common diseases were screened out. Three diseases had advantages in terms of service efficiency, security and service quality; 14 diseases had security advantage; 13 diseases had advantage in service quality. Conclusion Compared with three-A-grade general hospitals, most of the common diseases in the hospital has obvious advantages in security and service quality, but the average length of hospitalization in the hospital is longer, and the average cost of most of the common diseases is higher than the general hospital, without advantages in service efficiency.

ABSTRACT

This article made a definition for the concept of medical quality and medical quality evaluation, clarified logical relations between medical quality and medical service quality. Meanwhile, compared domestic and foreign standards of medical quality evaluation, combed the implementation of medical quality evaluation in China since 1970s. It summarized research development in current medical quality evaluation in China. At last, the necessity of medical quality evaluation construction in TCM hospitals was analyzed for further research in the future.

ABSTRACT

This paper sampled 79 TCM hospitals above county level in Jiangsu Province for research. With hospital ownership, board governance and hospital directors as three dimension of internal governance structure, the multiple regression model was used to investigate the impact of such structure on its social responsibility performance.Education level, number of hospital directors, and their values are found to be significant factors on their social responsibility performance.
