ABSTRACT

Abstract This qualitative research analyzes the trajectories of researchers who have produced master's and doctoral dissertations and theses on the humanization of childbirth in Brazil. The questions guiding the investigation are: How did the researchers detect the emergence of the conception of humanization of childbirth in their professional trajectories? How do these trajectories interrelate with the movement for the humanization of childbirth in Brazil? The Foucauldian theoretical framework adopted helps identify the positions occupied by the researchers in the discourse in favor of humanization, their places of utterance, and relations of knowledge and power that permeated the construction of the movement for the humanization of childbirth in Brazil.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The article analyzes the conceptions on childbirth humanization within Brazilian theses and dissertations, exposing how such conceptions are linked to the defense of a new assistance model, in opposition to the prevailing practices of modern obstetrics in the country. We have studied four dissertations and seven theses, which were presented from 1997 to 2012, representative of the main research centers on the subject and carried out by researchers with academic and professional trajectory related to the childbirth humanization in Brazil. The analysis describes the different conceptual and enunciative frameworks of theses and dissertations. Specifically, how the expression "humanization," especially the technical critique grounded on the "evidence-based" movement, has contributed to qualify the critique of the traditional and hegemonic obstetrics model. Among the results, we have listed nine axes that structure the conceptions on humanized childbirth in graduate studies in Brazil.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: This paper aims to discuss succinctly the "places" of master's theses and doctoral dissertations in Special Education in Brazil. It is sought to unveil its emergence and consolidation as an object of research within the Graduate Programs in Education (GPEs). Methodologically, the realization of this balance required the statistical update and the collection of general information (bibliographical data and summaries) about the theses and dissertations under analysis. This information has been organized and systematized into two databases, namely: 1) Pro-Identi; and 2) Caracter. The main results indicate that in the period from 1971 to 2016, 2,864 master's theses and 711 doctoral dissertations were defended, making a total of 3,575 defenses in Special Education, within the framework of the Brazilian GPEs. These researches were developed in 134 programs, with emphasis on the Graduate Program in Special Education of the Federal University of São Carlos, and ten other GPEs that together concentrate 49.3% of the production in the field. When consubstantiating the authors consulted and the survey made, it was possible to identify and characterize three periods of this research in the country, namely: Pioneerism, Expansion and Consolidation. Finally, synthetically, it is reasonable to consider that 45 years after the defense of the first master's thesis in Special Education in Brazil, research on this subject is consolidated in the country.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Internationalization is inherent to the university. However, it was not until the last century that the production on this subject has been expanding and embraces not only the sciences, but the higher education generally. This article analyzes what has been written about internationalization of higher education in researches in Brazil, between 2011 and 2014. The methodology uses the principles of the state of the knowledge and mainly relies on the Capes database of dissertations. The results demonstrate the complexity and ambiguity of the concept internationalization of higher education and a small number of theses and dissertations, in graduate programs of different areas, mainly in the humanities and applied social sciences, distributed in an almost similar manner, between the global/regional, national and institutional dimensions. The debate about the thematic categories of understanding of production on the internationalization of higher education under the perspective of young researchers deserves special attention.

ABSTRACT

AIM: The study's main aim was to gain in-depth understanding of how nurse scholars engage with electronic theses and dissertations. Through elicitation of opinions about challenges and opportunities, and perceptions of future development, the study also aimed to influence the design of a new international web-based forum for learning and sharing information on this topic. BACKGROUND: Electronic theses and dissertations provide an opportunity to radically change the way in which graduate student research is presented, disseminated and used internationally. However, as revealed by a multi-national survey in 2011, many nurse scholars in vanguard universities have little awareness of how to find and exploit this ever-expanding global knowledge resource that is increasingly available free in full text format. Within this context more detailed understandings of nurse scholars' thinking and actions are required. METHODS: A qualitative approach using a semi-structured interview guide was utilized to elicit perceptions from 14 nurse scholars. RESULTS: Thematic analysis of the interviewees' responses identified six major themes: initial exposure and effect; searching; accessing; handling; using; and evaluation. Insights were gained about the value of these resources and behaviours in using them as exemplars for structure, format and methodology. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND NURSING POLICY: Despite the small study size, the findings added valuable new insights to the overview gained from the 2011 survey. These have been used to inform development of a new global initiative: the International Network for Electronic Theses and Dissertations in Nursing. Featuring an educational website (www.inetdin.net), this initiative aims to support and challenge nursing's policy makers, practitioners and especially educators to utilize this neglected but exponentially increasing wellspring of international nursing knowledge.
