ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: While muscle mass and skeletal muscle fibers phenotype have been shown atypical in constitutional thinness (CT), force production capacities and its architectural determinants have never been explored. The present study compared muscle functionality and architecture between participants with CT and their normal-weight (NW) counterparts. METHODS: Anthropometry, body composition (Dual-X-ray Absorptiometry), physical activity/sedentary behavior (ActiGraph wGT3X-BT), ultrasound recording of the Vastus Lateralis (2D-ultrasound system), and functional capacities at maximal isometric and isokinetic voluntary contractions (MVCISO and MVCCON) during knee extension (isokinetic dynamometer chair Biodex) have been measured in 18 women with CT (body mass index < 17.5 kg/m2) and 17 NW women. RESULTS: A lower fat-free mass (ES: -1.94, 95%CI: -2.76 to -1.11, p < 0.001), a higher sedentary time, and a trend for a lower time spent at low-intensity physical activity, were observed in CT vs NW participants. While absolute MVCISO, MVCCON, rate of torque development (RTD), and torque work were all markedly lower in CT, these differences disappeared when normalized to body or muscle mass. Muscle thickness and fascicle length were found lower in CT (ES: -1.29, 95%CI: -2.03 to -0.52, p < 0.001; and ES: -0.87, 95%CI: -1.58 to -0.15, p = 0.02, respectively), while pennation angle was found similar. CONCLUSION: Despite lower absolute strength capacities observed in CT, present findings support the hypothesis of physiological adaptations to the low body and muscle mass than to some intrinsic contractile impairments. These results call for further studies exploring hypertrophy-targeted strategies in the management of CT.

BACKGROUND: Appropriate assessment of nutritional status of adolescents as a population group is an important area of focus, considering the age of culminating growth, the size of the age group, the changing nutrition patterns, and as a window of opportunity for corrections before adulthood sets in. Nutritional status is now recognized to be a prime indicator of the health of individuals. The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes the importance of employing age- and sex-specific reference values (body mass index-for-age Z scores {BAZ} scores) for nutritional assessment in this age group. However, the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), the major source of data in India for the policymakers, reports the nutritional status of adolescents based on adult body mass index (BMI) cutoffs, which might not be as appropriate as compared to body mass index-for-age Z scores (BAZ) scores. Misclassification of nutrition status has impacts on public health policies, intervention programs, and long-term health outcomes for adolescents. METHODS: This secondary analysis of NFHS-5 data was performed with the objective of estimating the degree of agreement between BMI and BAZ cutoffs in classifying the nutritional status among Indian adolescents. The NFHS-5 data were collected from over 636,000 households across the country. Height and weight were measured for adolescents using standardized instruments. BMI and BAZ scores were derived to assess nutritional status. World Health Organization's classifications were used to categorize nutritional status based on BMI and BAZ scores. The final analysis included data from 109,340 adolescents (13,040 males and 96,300 females) after excluding subjects having BAZ outliers and those whose age was 179 months or less. RESULTS: Substantial discrepancies emerged between the two methods. BMI classifications underestimated nutritional status in almost 30% of adolescents compared to BAZ. Over one-third of normal-weight individuals by BAZ are classified as thin by BMI. Conversely, nearly 78% of obese adolescents by BMI are classified as overweight by BAZ. The agreements between the classifications improved with age and were better among males. CONCLUSION: This analysis highlights the limitations of BMI for assessing adolescent nutritional status and suggests that BAZ offers a more accurate and age-appropriate alternative.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Individuals with constitutional thinness have been presented with a lower muscular energy metabolism at the cellular level but their effective aerobic capacities and exercise-related energy efficiency remains unexplored. The present study compares maximal and sub-maximal aerobic capacities between subjects with constitutional thinness and age-matched normal-weight ones. METHODS: Anthropometric measures, body composition (Dual-X-ray absorptiometry), physical activity and sedentary time (GT3x actigraphs), and maximal aerobic capacities (cycling V ˙ O 2peak test) were assessed in 18 constitutionally thin (CT-body mass index < 17.5 kg m-2) and 17 normal-weight (NW-body mass index between 20 and 25 kg m-2) women. Energy efficiency was assessed during a submaximal cycling test and a walking exercise. RESULTS: CT had a lower body mass and body mass index compared to NW. Absolute peak oxygen uptake and maximal aerobic power were lower in CT subjects compared to NW (ES: - 1.63 [- 2.40; - 0.86] and - 1.32 [- 2.05; - 0.58], p < 0.001). V ˙ O 2peak related to body mass was not different between groups. Gross and net efficiency (ES: - 0.78 [- 1.48; - 0.06], p = 0.03 and ES: - 0.73 [- 1.43; - 0.01], p = 0.05) were lower in CT compared to NW during the submaximal cycling exercise. The gross energy cost of walking related to body mass was lower in subjects with CT (ES: - 1.80 [- 2.60; - 0.97, p = 0.05), with no difference for the net one. Perceived exertion was similar between groups in responses to both submaximal exercises. CONCLUSION: Constitutionally thin women do not show impaired aerobic capacities at moderate to maximal intensities despite lower energy efficiency while cycling and walking at low-to-moderate intensities.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition among adolescents is a major public health issue. This problem is particularly pressing in Sudan, an African country where there is scarce published data on the nutritional status of adolescents. In this study, we aimed to assess the nutritional status of adolescents in eastern Sudan. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional survey was carried out in Gadarif, eastern Sudan. A questionnaire was used to collect sociodemographic data, and the anthropometric measurements (weight and height) of adolescent participants were recorded. Height-for-age and body mass index-for-age Z-scores were calculated using the WHO anthropometric standards. Binary and multivariate multinomial regression analyses were performed. RESULTS: A total of 388 adolescents were included in this survey, 207 (53.4%) were female, and 181 (46.6%) were male. The median (interquartile) age was 13.9 (12.0-16.0) years. The results showed that a total of 29 (7.5%), 93 (24.0%), 33 (8.5%), and 16 (4.1%) adolescents were stunted, thin, overweight, and obese, respectively. None of the investigated factors (age, sex, parents' education levels, and occupation) were associated with stunting. In the multivariate multinomial analysis, the male sex was associated with thinness (OR = 2.41, 95.0% CI = 1.47-3.94). Moreover, adolescents whose mothers had an education lower than secondary level were at a lower risk of overweight/obesity (OR = 0. 0.35, 95.0% CI = 0. 0.35). CONCLUSIONS: While both undernutrition and overnutrition exist in eastern Sudan, undernutrition is more common. Male sex and mothers' education levels are associated with malnutrition.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Anorexia Nervosa (AN) has one of the highest mortality rates of all mental health disorders, low recovery rate and is associated with widespread endocrine dysfunction. Resistance training (RT) has been consistently shown to provide beneficial effects on health outcomes that are often negatively affected by AN, however participation in exercise is controversial for individuals with AN. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of maximal RT as an add-on to standard of care in patients with AN. Methods: Originally, a controlled clinical trial was planned but due to COVID-19 pandemic, the study was prematurely ended and reported as a case series design. Three female inpatients with AN (Age 18-29 years, body mass index (BMI) 14.5-16.3 kg/m2, illness duration 1-7 years) underwent a supervised 6-week RT intervention as an add-on to standard of care. Primary outcome was muscular strength, as measured by a 1-repetition maximum. Secondary outcomes included BMI, eating disorder psychopathology and maladaptive exercise tendencies. Results: No adverse events were reported. All three participants improved lower body muscle strength, ranging from 32% to 134% in the leg press. Changes of 4% to 134% in the bench press and -3% to 38% in the pulldown were also observed. Conclusions: RT improved muscular strength in the participants. RT as part of standard of care may also provide additional benefits for individuals with AN, although further research is required to determine which subtype of patients would benefit from the addition of RT to their treatment protocol.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic gastrointestinal disease that causes anorexia, malabsorption, and increased energy requirements. Childhood IBD can significantly impact nutritional status and future health. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the nutritional status of patients with pediatric IBD at presentation and during follow-up and to identify predictors of nutritional outcome. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study reviewed the medical records of children diagnosed with IBD in the Pediatric Department, Salmaniya Medical Complex, Bahrain, 1984 - 2023. Demographic data, clinical characteristics, and anthropometric data were collected. World Health Organization growth standards were used to interpret nutritional status. RESULTS: Of the 165 patients, 99 (60%) had anthropometric data at presentation, and 130 (78.8%) had follow-up data. Most patients were males (64.6%) and had Crohn's disease (CD) (56.2%), while 43.8% had ulcerative colitis (UC). The median age at presentation was 10.9 years and the mean follow-up duration was 12.6 years. At presentation, 53.5% of the patients were malnourished, that decreased to 46.9% on follow-up. Thinness was reduced from 27.3% at presentation to 12.1% at follow-up (p = 0.003). There was an increased tendency to normal weight on follow-up (59.6%) compared to time of presentation (46.5%), p = 0.035. Overweightness showed a non-significant increase from 26.3% at presentation to 28.3% at follow-up (p = 0.791). Children with IBD were more likely to become obese when they grow up to adulthood (2.3% versus 20.5%, respectively, p < 0.001). Weight-for-age, and height-for-age at presentation were higher among CD compared to UC, but body mass index (BMI) at follow-up was higher among UC patients (p < 0.05). Thinness at follow up was associated with very early-onset disease (p = 0.02), lower weight and BMI at presentation (p < 0.001 each), younger age at follow-up (p = 0.002), pediatric age group (p = 0.023), lower hematocrit (p = 0.017), and higher C-reactive protein (p = 0.007). Overweight at follow up was associated with increased weight and BMI at presentation (p < 0.001 each), longer disease duration (p = 0.005), older age (p = 0.002), and azathioprine intake (p = 0.026). Considering follow-up duration, univariate analysis exhibited that Bahraini nationality, post-diagnosis disease duration, age at follow-up, occurrence of diarrhea, height, and BMI at presentation were factors that decreased liability to abnormal nutritional status, while CD, history of weight loss, perianal disease, and skin rash, and intake of prednisolone expressed increased liability of abnormal nutritional status (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Pediatric IBD is associated with a high incidence of malnutrition. Thinness is more prominent at presentation, while overweight is higher on follow-up. Multiple risk factors aggravating abnormal nutritional status were highlighted. Accordingly, nutritional counseling should be prioritized in a multidisciplinary approach.

ABSTRACT

Eating Disorders (EDs) and related symptoms pose a substantial public health concern due to their widespread prevalence among both genders and associated negative outcomes, underscoring the need for effective preventive interventions. In this context, deepening our understanding of the interplay between ED symptoms and related protective factors appears crucial. Therefore, this study employed a structural network analysis approach considering both ED symptom dimensions (i.e., drive for thinness, bulimic symptoms, and body dissatisfaction) and related protective factors (i.e., body and functionality appreciation, intuitive eating, and self-esteem) to shed light on how these factors are interrelated. A community sample of 1391 individuals (34.4% men; Mage = 26.4 years) completed a socio-demographic schedule and self-report questionnaires. The network showed that the nodes with the highest positive expected influence were body and functionality appreciation, while those with the highest negative expected influence were eating for physical rather than emotional reasons and unconditional permission to eat (i.e., two components of intuitive eating). Crucially, the most relevant bridges between the conceptual communities "ED symptom dimensions" and "Protective factors" were the negative relations between (a) eating for physical rather than emotional reasons and bulimic symptoms, (b) unconditional permission to eat and drive for thinness, and (c) body appreciation and body dissatisfaction. Finally, age, gender, and body mass index did not moderate any edge in the network. The practical implications of these findings are discussed, especially in terms of preventive interventions for ED symptoms.

BACKGROUND: The school-age period is marked by substantial advancements in physical and cognitive development, highlighting the importance of assessing the diet quality and its impact on body weight and height. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the association between diet quality and selected anthropometric indices of primary school girls in southeast of Iran using the healthy eating index-2015 (HEI-2015). METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 330 students aged 6-12 years from 10 primary schools in Kerman City. Standard protocols and a dish-based food frequency questionnaire were employed to evaluate anthropometric indices and dietary intake. The HEI-2015 was utilized to assess the quality of participants' diets, with a total score ranging from zero to 100, based on thirteen food score components. RESULTS: In the present study, older participants had higher HEI scores (p = 0.02). Additionally, participants in the highest tertile of HEI score had greaterodds of being overweight (OR: 2.13; CI = 1.17-3.85, P = 0.011) and had higher intakes of whole fruits, total fruits including fruit juice, whole grains, total protein foods, seafood and plant proteins, greens, and beans (p < 0.05). However, no significant association was found between HEI score and other anthropometric indices, obesity, and thinness. CONCLUSIONS: The study found no significant association between HEI scores and the likelihood of being thin or obese. However, children with the highest HEI scores were more likely to beoverweight. Therefore, it is recommended to implement health programs for primary school girls in Kerman to improve their eating habits and reduce the risk of overweight and obesity.

Nutrition plays a crucial role for the bio-psycho-social growth and development of children. Mother-child pairs' eating-feeding problems can be hypothesized to relate to the child's nutritional status and living area. Our focus was to assess maternal attitudes and children's eating habits in thin and normal-weight children across two cities characterized by distinct socioeconomic and demographic profiles: Ankara and Sanliurfa. This double case-control study included the mothers whose children are aged between 2 and 7 years old in both cities. Figure Rating Scale, Child Feeding Questionnaire and Behavioral Pediatrics Feeding Assessment Scale were filled by mothers of children. The mothers of thin children were concerned more about the weight of their children, felt more responsible for feeding their children, and use of pressured them to eat more frequently compared to normal-weight children's mothers in both cities. In Ankara, the duration of breastfeeding is longer, using formula is rarer and starting complementary food on time is more common, mother had higher scores on perceived responsibility, perceived child weight, and concern about child weight subscales; lower score on the restriction subscale compared to Sanliurfa. Mothers of both thin and normal weight children in Sanliurfa rated their children as weaker compared to those in Ankara. In conclusion, child eating behaviors and parental feeding practices were associated with the weight of children depending on demographic and sociocultural differences. Implementing customized, location-specific preventive educational initiatives on child feeding will not only foster behavioral changes but also yield valuable insights for shaping future interventions.

AIMS: Regular self-weighing is effective in weight management and may help to mitigate the risk of underweight among older adults. We examined which factors of oral function are associated with a risk for underweight among community-dwelling older adults and whether regular self-weighing can mitigate that risk. METHODS: This was a cohort study. Self-administered questionnaires were mailed to 7665 older adults in March 2019 (response rate 74.3%) and 7591 in March 2020 (response rate 74.7%). Among those who responded to both surveys, 3594 older adults who were not underweight in March 2019 were included (follow-up rate: 59.2%). We examined the association between dysphagia, poor masticatory function, and dry mouth and the development of underweight, and whether regular self-weighing reduced the risk for underweight. RESULTS: The average age ± standard deviation of participants was 71.1 ± 3.4 years. There was a significant association between swallowing difficulty and the occurrence of underweight (odds ratio = 1.65, p = .012). However, this relationship did not differ significantly with regular self-weighing (p = .477). CONCLUSIONS: These study findings suggest that to prevent underweight among community-dwelling older adults, it is important to focus on those with poor swallowing function.

BACKGROUND: The current study examined whether risk factors for anorexia nervosa (AN) were related to different levels of severity based on (a) the DSM-5/body mass index (BMI) and (b) drive for thinness (DT) severity ratings. METHODS: The sample comprised 153 pairs of individuals with a lifetime diagnosis AN per DSM-IV criteria and their non-ED sisters (N = 306, mean age = 26.53; mean current BMI = 20.42 kg/m2). The Oxford risk factor interview was used to establish AN-related risk factors. Individuals were categorised into the DSM-5 severity groups based on their lowest BMI, while the DT subscale from the eating disorder inventory-2 was used to classify individuals with AN into low and high DT groups. RESULTS: Multinominal regression models showed similar risk factors (e.g., perfectionism, having a history of being teased about weight and shape) contributed to the development of AN using the DSM-5 and DT severity ratings. Follow-up analyses across the severity groups for both indices revealed that only childhood perfectionism was found to be more common in the extreme severe DSM-5 BMI severity group compared to the severe DSM-5 group. CONCLUSION: Overall, this study found little evidence for AN risk factors being related to the DSM-5 and DT severity ratings. However, given the novelty of this study, replication of the current results is warranted.


Several risk factors, such as childhood obesity, have been found to contribute to the development of Anorexia Nervosa (AN). Yet, we are unsure if there is a set of risk factors that influence different levels of AN severity. While the DSM-5 suggests using BMI to measure severity, recent support favour the usage of drive for thinness (DT) as an alternative severity measure. Therefore, this study aimed to explore risk factors specifically associated with the development of different AN severity levels using both the DSM-5 BMI and DT severity classification systems. We recruited 153 pairs of individuals with a lifetime diagnosis AN per DSM-IV criteria and their non-ED sisters. The Oxford risk factor interview was used to establish AN-related risk factors. We found childhood perfectionism, weight/shape teasing, childhood obesity, and breast-related embarrassment to be significant risk factors for AN. Additionally, childhood perfectionism was more common in the extreme severe DSM-5 group compared to the severe DSM-5 group. This suggests that adding perfectionism-related aspects to prevention and early intervention programs for AN may be beneficial. Considering the novelty of this study, replication of the current results is needed.

OBJECTIVES: Adolescents go through rapid development and increased nutritional requirements that can put them at higher risk of undernutrition--a problem that can be highest among orphaned or street children. Evidence on nutritional risk and its contributing factors among this segment is lacking in the city of Dire Dawa, where many children are on the streets with limited access to proper care. The aim of this study was to identify determinants of undernutrition among street adolescents in Ethiopia. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted with 358 street adolescents 12 to 19 y of age in Dire Dawa from January to February 2022. After conducting a preliminary survey and registering all available street children, a complete enumeration was made. For data collection, an interviewer-administered questionnaire was used along with anthropometric measurements using standard procedures. Height-for-age (HAZ) and body mass index (BMI) for age z scores were computed using World Health Organization (WHO) Anthroplus and statistical analysis was done using SPSS software version 26. Independent variables with P < 0.25 in bivariable analysis were included in multivariable logistic regression, and variables with P < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. A crude and adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was reported. RESULTS: Among 358 street adolescents, 44% (38.9-49.5) and 56% (50.8-61.4) were thin and stunted, respectively. Thinness among street children could be associated with a longer stay on the street (AOR, 1.65; 95% CI, 1.40-1.90), infrequent meal frequency (AOR, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.19-1.45), unprotected drinking water sources (AOR, 1.55; 95% CI, 1.40-1.71), alcohol drinking (AOR, 2.92; 95% CI, 1.51-4.32), inadequately diversified diet (AOR, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.06-1.36), and illness history (AOR, 1.34; 95% CI, 1.21-1.47). Moreover, odds of stunting were significantly associated with staying on the street (AOR, 1.32; 1.10-1.54), unsafe drinking water (AOR, 1.63; 95% CI, 1.13-2.66), smoking cigarettes (AOR, 1.54; 95% CI, 1.21-2.52), dietary diversity (AOR, 2.34; 95% CI, 1.43-3.82), and acute illness (AOR, 2.12; 95% CI, 1.31-5.23). CONCLUSION: Thinness and stunting were prevalent among street children and are associated with infrequent meals, poor dietary diversity, substance abuse, unsafe water sources, and illness histories that could be targeted for multisectoral interventions.

ABSTRACT

Exposure to body-positive imagery plays a positive role in women's body image. However, literature has not examined if this is the case for men too. In this study (N = 207), we examined the impact of idealized body and body-positive imagery on both men's and women's body satisfaction and body image concerns. Participants were asked to report their positive and negative mood, body satisfaction, drive for thinness, and drive for muscularity before and after being exposed to either control (landscapes and animals), idealized body, or body-positive imagery. Results showed that women were overall more dissatisfied with their bodies and reported a stronger negative mood and a higher drive for thinness than men. Men, instead, reported a higher drive for muscularity. Exposure to idealized body imagery decreased positive mood and body satisfaction in both men and women. In contrast, exposure to body-positive imagery increased body satisfaction and decreased the drive for thinness in both men and women. Drive for muscularity was not affected by the type of imagery. The findings show that idealized body and body-positive imagery have similar effects on men and women and showcase the importance of considering the effects of body-positivity content for both genders.

ABSTRACT

While people with Constitutional Thinness (CT) declare a deep willingness to gain weight, there appetitive responses to energy balance manipulations remain unclear. The present work compares the effect of an acute exercise combined or not with an energy replacement load, on subsequent energy intake, appetite and food reward, between normal weight and women with CT. Anthropometric measurements, body composition (Dual X-ray absorptiometry-DXA) and aerobic capacity (VO2max) were assessed in 10 normal-weight (Body Mass Index-BMI): 20-25 kg/m2) and 10 C T (BMI<17.5 kg/m2) women (18-30 years). They randomly performed i) a resting session (CON); ii) an exercise session (EX); iii) an exercise session with energy replacement (EX + R). Their subsequent ad libitum intake, appetite feelings and food reward were evaluated (Leeds-Food-Preference-Questionnaire). CT showed a lower weight (p < 0,001), BMI(p < 0,001), Fat-Mass (%) (p = 0,003) and Fat-Free Mass (kg) (p < 0,001). CT showed a lower ad libitum energy intake on EX + R compared with CON (p = 0,008) and a higher Relative Energy Intake (REI) on CON compared with EX (p = 0,007) and EX + R (p < 0,001). A lower was observed during EX and EX + R compared with CON (p = 0,006,p = 0,009 respectively) in CT. No condition nor group effect was found for hunger. NW only showed a higher pre-meal fullness on EX + R compared to CON and EX (p < 0,001). Choice (p = 0,030), Explicit Liking (p = 0,016), Explicit Wanting (p = 0,004) and Implicit Wanting (p = 0,035) for taste were higher on EX + R than CON and EX. The decreased EI observed in CT when the exercise-induced energy expenditure is compensated by the ingestion of an equivalent energy load, might contribute to explain the difficulty to increase their energy balance and then induce weight gain. Further studies are needed to better understand their energy balance regulation to propose adapted weight gain strategies.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition among adolescents is a considerable health problem worldwide. There are scarce data on undernutrition among adolescents in Sudan. METHODS: A cross­sectional study was conducted to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of stunting and thinness among adolescent schoolchildren in northern Sudan. The questionnaires were used to collect information on sociodemographics. Weights and heights were measured and the height-for-age and body mass index-for-age cut-offs recommended by the WHO were applied, followed by logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Of 384 enrolled adolescents, 202 (52.6%) were females and 182 (47.4%) were males. The median (IQR) age of these adolescents was 15.1 (14.0‒16.3) y. Seventy-six (19.8%) and 52 (15.4%) adolescents had stunting and thinness, respectively, and 15 (3.9%) had both stunting and thinness. Multivariate analysis showed that increased age (adjusted OR [AOR]=1.30, 95% CI 1.08 to 1.57) and male gender (AOR=5.82, 95% CI 3.11 to 10.91) were associated with stunting. Male gender (AOR=2.08, 95% CI 1.14 to 3.82) and smoking/tobacco snuff (AOR=2.61, 95% CI 1.07 to 6.36) were associated with thinness. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of the current study are that both stunting and thinness are important health problems, especially among boys, older participants and smokers.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To examine trends in all body mass index (BMI) groups in children from 1936 to 2011. METHODS: We included 197 694 girls and 201 276 boys from the Copenhagen School Health Records Register, born between 1930 and 1996, with longitudinal weight and height measurements (6-14 years). Using International Obesity Task Force criteria, BMI was classified as underweight, normal-weight, overweight and obesity. Sex- and age-specific prevalences were calculated. RESULTS: From the 1930s, the prevalence of underweight was stable until a small increase occurred from 1950 to 1970s, and thereafter it declined into the early 2000s. Using 7-year-olds as an example, underweight changed from 10% to 7% in girls and from 9% to 6% in boys during the study period. The prevalence of overweight plateaued from 1950 to 1970s and then steeply increased from 1970s onwards and in 1990-2000s 15% girls and 11% boys at 7 years had overweight. The prevalence of obesity particularly increased from 1980s onwards and in 1990-2000s 5% girls and 4% boys at 7 years had obesity. These trends slightly differed by age. CONCLUSION: Among Danish schoolchildren, the prevalence of underweight was greater than overweight until the 1980s and greater than obesity throughout the period. Thus, monitoring the prevalence of childhood underweight remains an important public health issue.

ABSTRACT

Eating disorders (EDs) have been understudied and misunderstood in men. Among the relevant factors in the risk, onset, and maintenance of EDs, personality stands out. Therefore, the aim of the study was to analyze the relationships between personality traits and risk variables for the development of EDs in men. A total of 443 male university students (mean = 22.16 years) who completed the Spanish versions of the Eating Disorder Inventory-3 (EDI-3) and the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) participated. Correlation analyses were performed, and in order to determine the predictive role of personality traits on risk scales, a hierarchical multiple regression was performed. The results showed that neuroticism was positively associated with drive for thinness, being its main predictor variable. In bulimia, the main relationships were positively associated with neuroticism and negatively with conscientiousness. As for body dissatisfaction, the main predictor variables were neuroticism and, in a negative sense, extraversion and openness to experience. In conclusion, personality traits are related to the risk of developing EDs in male university students, with neuroticism being the main associated trait.

Introduction: An association between weight status and migraine has been previously reported; however, this relationship has only been studied in adults, not in the paediatric population. Objective: To evaluate the association between weight status and migraine in the paediatric population. Methods: We searched PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, Ovid Medline, and Embase using a cut-off date of May 2023. We included observational studies that evaluated the association between weight status (underweight, overweight, obese, and excess weight) and migraine in the paediatric population (children and adolescents). Normal weight was the comparator. The outcome was migraine (all types, episodic and chronic). We performed meta-analyses using a random-effects model to estimate the pooled effects for each outcome. Sensitivity analysis was performed based on study design and risk of bias (using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale). Certainty of evidence was assessed using the GRADE approach. Results: Eight studies (6 cross-sectional, 1 case-control and 1 cohort) covering 16,556 patients were included. The overall certainty of evidence was very low for the association between overweight, obesity, and excess weight with migraine. In the sensitivity analysis, meta-analyses of studies with a low risk of bias found that the overweight population probably had an increased odds of migraine (OR: 1.70; 95% CI: 1.14 to 2.53; I2 = 32.3%, p = 0.224) and that excess weight may increase the odds of migraine (OR: 1.58; 95% CI: 1.06 to 2.35; I2 = 83.7%, p = 0.002). Additionally, cohort and case-control studies found that obesity probably increases the odds of migraine. No studies analysed the association between underweight and migraine. Conclusion: The associations between overweight, obesity, excess weight and migraine were uncertain, but studies with better methodological quality reported increased odds. Future longitudinal studies with proper confounding control are needed to disentangle their causal relationship. Systematic review registration: PROSPERO, identifier CRD42021271533.

ABSTRACT

Background: Thinness and stunting are the most severe public health problems among adolescent girls in Ethiopia. An inadequate intake of protein-source foods is the most critical cause, mainly due to the non-affordability of animal-origin foods. However, research into what extent improving pulses-based food consumption could contribute to decreasing the magnitude of protein-energy undernutrition is limited. Objective: This trial aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of pulses-based nutrition education in reducing the proportion of thinness among adolescent girls. Methods: A two-arm cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted among adolescent girls in Northwest Ethiopia from December 2021 to June 2022. A total of 602 adolescent girls from four schools were enrolled in the trial. Schools were assigned to intervention and control groups using the stratified cluster randomization method. Pulses-based nutrition education was the intervention, whereas the usual dietary practice of adolescent girls was the comparator. The education was delivered over 4 weeks on a 45-60-min session per week basis. Thinness was the primary outcome of the trial, measured by anthropometry. An intention-to-treat analysis method was used. A log-binomial regression model was fitted to the data. Relative risk with the respective confidence interval and value of p was calculated. A value of p < 0.05 was used to declare statistical significance. Stata 16 software was used for the analysis. Results: About 89.37% of the participants in the intervention group and 92.36% in the control group completed the trial. The pulses-based nutrition education intervention did not show a significant difference in reducing the proportion of thinness among the participants in the intervention group compared to the participants in the control group even though a significant difference was observed in terms of the consumption of pulses-based food. Conclusion: The present trial was statistically non-significant in reducing thinness among adolescent girls. Similar studies that utilize objective methods for ascertaining pulses-based food consumption need to be conducted.Clinical trial registration: https://pactr.samrc.ac.za/Search.aspx, the trial was registered in the Pan African Clinical Trials Registry (PACTR202111605102515) on November 12, 2021.

ABSTRACT

Child maltreatment poses not only immediate danger, but as a type of toxic stress, it creates higher risk of biologic dysfunction later in life. Pediatricians are in a unique position to diagnose child maltreatment, but they need evidence-based guidance for when to initiate screening when injury is occult. In this retrospective cohort study of 855 pediatric patients diagnosed with child maltreatment, researchers explored whether type or number of diagnoses was associated with abnormal pediatric weight in either direction. Diagnoses and weight assessed at intake were extracted from medical records for analysis. Statistically significant associations were found between weight classification and child maltreatment type as well as diagnosis count. Neglect was most frequently diagnosed, and children with ≥2 diagnoses were more likely to be classified as underweight, overweight, or obese. Findings support abnormal pediatric weight as a biologic signal of adversity that warrants safety screening in the clinical setting.
