ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Bullfighting festivals are attributed to the cultural idiosyncrasies of the Ibero-American people, posing an extreme risk to the physical integrity of the participants. Spain is considered the country with the highest number of bull-related celebrations worldwide and, therefore, with the highest number of patients injured by bullfighting trauma treated, thus justifying a public health problem. The generalities associated with this type of trauma define the people injured as polytraumatised patients. In addition, it is important to know the kinematics of the injuries and their specific characteristics, in order to implement quality medical-surgical care. METHODS: scientific review of the literature to promote a comprehensive guide for the medical-surgical management of patients injured by bullfighting trauma. RESULTS: We described the guidelines to standardise protocols for in-hospital approach of patients injured by bullfighting trauma. CONCLUSIONS: Bullfighting trauma is considered a real health problem in the emergency departments of the ibero-Americans countries, especially in Spain, where bullfighting is part of the national culture. The inherent characteristics of these animals cause injuries with special aspects, so it is important to know the generalities of bullfighting trauma. Because of the multidisciplinary approach, this guidelines are adressed to all healthcare providers involved in the management of these patients. It is essential to establish particular initial care for this type of injury, specific therapeutic action and follow-up based on the medical-surgical management of the trauma patient in order to reduce the associated morbidity and mortality.

ABSTRACT

Amphipods in the parvorder Hadziidira are typically associated with algae, sponges, or coral rubble. Members of the parvorder have a gnathopod 2 that is stouter than gnathopod 1, a pair of dorsal robust setae on urosomite 2, and a basofacial robust seta on the uropod 1 peduncle. Within the parvorder, six families are documented from Bocas del Toro, Panama, represented by 26 species. This research documents range extensions for all 26 species and an identification key to the species of Caribbean Hadziidira of Panama is provided.


ResumenLos anfípodos del parvorden Hadziidira suelen estar asociados con algas, esponjas o escombros de coral. Los miembros del parvorden tienen un gnatópodo 2 que es más robusto que el gnatópodo 1, un par de setas dorsales robustas en el urosomita 2 y una seta basofacial robusta en el pedúnculo del urópodo 1. Dentro del parvorden se documentan seis familias de Bocas del Toro, Panamá, representadas por 26 especies. Esta investigación documenta extensiones de rango para las 26 especies y se proporciona una clave de identificación para las especies de Hadziidira caribeña de Panamá.

ABSTRACT

As mass coral bleaching events become more frequent, it is increasingly important to elucidate the factors underlying coral susceptibility and survival. We measured photosynthesis, respiration, and O2 concentration at the coral tissue surface, Symbiodiniaceae genotypes, and energy metabolic enzyme activities in Agaricia agaricites and Orbicella franksi throughout experimentally-induced thermal bleaching (+3 °C). A. agaricites colonies started to bleach two days into the thermal treatment and were fully bleached between Days 19-31. In contrast, O. franksi colonies only started to bleach on Day 12 and five colonies fully bleached between Days 24-38 while the remining three colonies took up 55 days. Both species experienced decreased photosynthesis and respiration rates as bleaching progressed. As a result, daytime O2 concentration at the coral surface shifted from hyperoxia in unbleached corals to normoxia in partially bleached corals, and to near hypoxia in fully bleached corals. Additionally, nighttime tissue surface O2 concentration shifted from hypoxia to normoxia, likely resulting from decreased symbiotic algae density, respiration, and photosynthates that fuel coral aerobic respiration. Genetic profiling of internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) revealed differences in Symbiodiniaceae clade proportions between control and bleached colonies. Activity levels of energy metabolic enzymes did not significantly vary between control and bleached A. agaricites, but malate dehydrogenase and strombine dehydrogenase activities were significantly higher in bleached O. franksi colonies compared to controls. These differences were driven by the three O. franksi colonies that took the longest to bleach and contained >98 % Durusdinium sp. D1. The shifts in O2 dynamics within the microhabitat of bleached corals may have important implications for the metabolism of the coral holobiont while the changes in Symbiodiniaceae ITS2 profile and the upregulation of energy metabolic enzymes identify a potential factor contributing to bleaching dynamics.

ABSTRACT

Amphipods in the parvorder Oedicerotidira are burrowers, furrowers, or surface skimmers. Members of the parvorder share a well-developed posteroventral lobe on coxa 4, an equilobate coxa 5, an immensely elongate pereopod 7 that differs in structure from pereopod 6, and an entire telson. Within the parvorder, only the family Oedicerotidae has been documented from Bocas del Toro, Panama, represented by two species. This research documents a range extension for Hartmanodesnyei (Shoemaker, 1933) and describes a new species of Synchelidium Sars, 1892. An identification key to the species of Caribbean Oedicerotidae of Panama is provided.

ABSTRACT

Type 1 recombinant enterovirus G (EV-G), which carries the papain-like cysteine protease (PLCP) gene of torovirus between its 2C/3A regions, and type 2 recombinant EV-G, which carries the torovirus PLCP gene with its flanking regions having non-EV-G sequences in place of the viral structural genes, have been detected in pig farms in several countries. In a previous study, we collected 222 fecal samples from 77 pig farms from 2104 to 2016 and detected one type 2 recombinant EV-G genome by metagenomics sequencing. In this study, we reanalyzed the metagenomic data and detected 11 type 2 recombinant EV-G genomes. In addition, we discovered new type 2 recombinant EV-G genomes of the two strains from two pig farms samples in 2018 and 2019. Thus, we identified the genomes of 13 novel type 2 recombinant EV-Gs isolated from several pig farms in Japan. Type 2 recombinant EV-G has previously been detected only in neonatal piglets. The present findings suggest that type 2 recombinant EV-G replicates in weaning piglets and sows. The detection of type 1 recombinant EV-Gs and type 2 recombinant EV-Gs at 3-year and 2-year intervals, respectively, from the same pig farm suggests that the viruses were persistently infecting or circulating in these farms.

ABSTRACT

Bioeroding sponges interact and compete with corals on tropical reefs. Experimental studies have shown global change alters this biotic interaction, often in favour of the sponge. Ocean acidification in particular increases sponge bioerosion and reduces coral calcification, yet little is known about the molecular basis of these changes. We used RNA-Seq data to understand how acidification impacts the interaction between the bioeroding sponge, Cliona varians, and the coral, Porites furcata, at the transcriptomic level. Replicate sponge and coral genets were exposed to ambient (8.1 pH) and acidified (7.6 pH) conditions in isolation and in treatments where they were joined for 48 h. The coral had a small gene expression response (tens of transcripts) to the sponge, suggesting it does little at the transcriptomic level to deter sponge overgrowth. By contrast, the sponge differentially expressed 7320 transcripts in response to the coral under ambient conditions and 3707 transcripts in response to acidification. Overlap in the responses to acidification and the coral, 2500 transcripts expressed under both treatments, suggests a similar physiological response to both cues. The sponge expressed 50× fewer transcripts in response to the coral under acidification, suggesting energetic costs of bioerosion, and other cellular processes, are lower for sponges under acidification. Our results suggest how acidification drives ecosystem-level changes in the accretion/bioerosion balance on coral reefs. This shift is not only the result of changes to the thermodynamic balance of these chemical reactions but also the result of active physiological responses of organisms to each other and their abiotic environment.

Abstract Background: In artificial insemination, chicken egg yolk is added to bovine semen to protect it during the cryopreservation process, although it contains substances that can affect the microbiological quality and metabolism of sperm. Objective: To evaluate post-thaw quality of bovine cryopreserved semen added with centrifuged and non-centrifuged egg yolk, low-density lipoproteins (LDL), and trehalose (T). Methods: Ten ejaculates from five bulls were cryopreserved under the treatments T1: pure egg yolk (PEY) at 20% v/v, T2: centrifuged egg yolk (CEY) at 20% v/v, T3: LDL at 8% v/v, T4: T at 100 mM, and T5: T at 100 mM plus LDL at 8% v/v (TLDL). Spermatic motility and kinetics, functional membrane integrity (FMI), structural membrane integrity (SMI), sperm vitality (SV) and abnormal morphology (AM) were assessed using the Sperm Class Analyzer (SCA®) system, hypoosmotic test (HOST), SYBR/PI probes, and eosin-nigrosin staining, respectively. A completely randomized design was used. Normal distribution of the variables was validated through the Kolmogórov- Smirnov test. A generalized linear model was used to determine sources of variation. Means were compared using the Tukey test. Results: Inclusion of CEY or LDL had a similar effect on sperm protection, and were superior for motility, kinetics and membrane integrity compared to the other treatments (p<0.05). CEY was superior for progressive motility (p<0.05). The cryoprotective action of LDL was similar to TLDL for motility and kinetics, SMI, SV, and AM (p<0.05). Inclusion of PEY and T resulted in the lowest semen quality (p<0.05). The use of T resulted in a reduction in FMI and SMI (p<0.05). No differences in AM between treatments were found (p>0.05). Conclusions: Egg yolk can be replaced by centrifuged egg yolk or low-density lipoproteins in the freezing extender used for bovine semen used in artificial insemination.


Resumen Antecedentes: la yema de huevo de gallina se agrega al semen bovino usado en inseminación artificial para protegerlo durante el proceso de criopreservación, aunque ésta tiene sustancias que pueden afectar el metabolismo espermatico y la calidad microbiológica del semen. Objetivo: evaluar la calidad post-descongelación del semen bovino criopreservado agregado con yema de huevo centrifugada y no centrifugada, lipoproteínas de baja densidad (LDL) y trehalosa (T). Métodos: diez eyaculados de cinco toros se criopreservaron bajo los tratamientos, T1: yema de huevo pura (PEY) al 20% v/v, T2: yema de huevo centrifugada (CEY) al 20% v/v, T3: LDL al 8% v/v, T4: T a 100 mM, y T5: T a 100 mM más LDL al 8% v/v (TLDL). La movilidad y la cinética espermática, la integridad funcional de la membrana (FMI), la integridad estructural de la membrana (SMI), la vitalidad espermática (SV) y la morfología anormal (AM), se determinaron mediante el sistema Sperm Class Analyzer (SCA®), la prueba hipoosmótica (HOST), las sondas SYBR/PI y la tinción con eosina-nigrosina, respectivamente. Se utilizó un diseño completamente al azar. La normalidad de las variables se validó mediante la prueba de Kolmogórov-Smirnov. Se utilizó un modelo lineal generalizado para determinar las fuentes de variación. Las medias de los tratamientos se compararon mediante la prueba de Tukey. Resultados: CEY y LDL tuvieron un efecto similar en la protección de los espermatozoides, siendo superiores a los demás tratamientos respecto a movilidad, cinética e integridad de la membrana (p<0,05). CEY fue superior para la movilidad progresiva (p<0,05). La acción crioprotectora de LDL fue similar a TLDL para movilidad y cinética, SMI, AM y SV (p<0,05). PEY y T resultaron en la más baja calidad seminal (p<0,05). El uso de T redujo la FMI y la SMI (p<0,05). No se encontraron diferencias en AM entre los tratamientos (p>0,05). Conclusiones: la yema de huevo puede reemplazarse por yema de huevo centrifugada o por lipoproteinas de baja densidad en el diluyente de congelación usado para semen bovino destinado a inseminacion artificial.


Resumo Antecedentes: a gema de ovo de galinha tem sido utilizada com a finalidade de proteger o sêmen bovino durante o processo de criopreservação, embora tenha substâncias que possam afetar o metabolismo dos espermatozóides e a qualidade microbiológica do sêmen utilizado para a inseminação artificial. Objetivo: avaliar a qualidade pós-descongelamento do sêmen bovino criopreservado com gema de ovo centrifugada e não centrifugada, lipoproteínas de baixa densidade (LDL) e trealose (T). Métodos: dez ejaculados de cinco touros foram criopreservados sob os tratamentos, T1: gema de ovo pura (PEY) 20% v/v, T2: gema de ovo centrifugada (CEY) 20% v/v, T3: LDL 8% v/v, T4: T 100 mM e T5: T 100 mM mais LDL 8% v/v (TLDL). Mobilidade e cinética espermática, integridade funcional da membrana (FMI), integridade estrutural da membrana (SMI), vitalidade espermática (SV) e morfologia anormal (AM) foram determinadas por o sistema Sperm Class Analyzer (SCA®), teste hiposmótico (HOST), coloração com SYBR/PI e eosina-nigrosina, respectivamente. Um design completamente aleatoriedade foi usado. A normalidade das variáveis foi validada pelo teste de Kolmogorov-Smirnov. Um modelo linear generalizado foi utilizado para determinar as fontes de variação. As médias dos tratamentos foram comparadas pelo teste de Tukey. Resultados: T2 (CEY) e T3 (LDL) tiveram efeito similar na proteção espermática, sendo superior aos demais tratamentos para mobilidade, cinética e integridade da membrana (p<0,05). T2 (CEY) foi superior para mobilidade progressiva (p<0,05). A ação crioprotetora de T3 (LDL) foi semelhante à T5 (TLDL) para motilidade e cinética, SMI, SV e AM (p<0,05). T1 (PEY) e T4 (T) tiveram a menor qualidade seminal (p<0,05). O uso de T4 (T) produziu uma redução na SMI e FMI (p<0,05). Não foram encontradas diferenças na AM entre os tratamentos (p>0,05). Conclusões: a gema de ovo pode ser substituída por gema de ovo centrifugada ou lipoproteínas de baixa densidade no diluente de congelamento de sêmen bovino.

ABSTRACT

Preexploitation shark baselines and the history of human impact on coral reef-associated shark communities in the Caribbean are tpoorly understood. We recovered shark dermal denticles from mid-Holocene (∼7 ky ago) and modern reef sediments in Bocas del Toro, Caribbean Panama, to reconstruct an empirical shark baseline before major human impact and to quantify how much the modern shark community in the region had shifted from this historical reference point. We found that denticle accumulation rates, a proxy for shark abundance, declined by 71% since the mid-Holocene. All denticle morphotypes, which reflect shark community composition, experienced significant losses, but those morphotypes found on fast-swimming, pelagic sharks (e.g., families Carcharhinidae and Sphyrnidae) declined the most. An analysis of historical records suggested that the steepest decline in shark abundance occurred in the late 20th century, coinciding with the advent of a targeted shark fishery in Panama. Although the disproportionate loss of denticles characterizing pelagic sharks was consistent with overfishing, the large reduction in denticles characterizing demersal species with low commercial value (i.e., the nurse shark Ginglymostoma cirratum) indicated that other stressors could have exacerbated these declines. We demonstrate that the denticle record can reveal changes in shark communities over long ecological timescales, helping to contextualize contemporary abundances and inform shark management and ecology.

ABSTRACT

Seagrass meadows are valued coastal habitats that provide ecological and economic benefits around the world. Despite their importance, many meadows are in decline, driven by a variety of anthropogenic impacts. While these declines have been well documented in some regions, other locations (particularly within the tropics) lack long-term monitoring programs needed to resolve seagrass trends over time. Effective and spatially-expansive monitoring within under-represented regions is critical to provide an accurate perspective on seagrass status and trends. We present a comprehensive dataset on seagrass coverage and composition across 24 sites in Bahía Almirante, a lagoon along the Caribbean coast of Panama. Using a single survey, we focus on capturing spatial variation in seagrass physical and elemental characteristics and provide data on key seagrass bio-indicators, such as leaf morphology (length and width), elemental content (% nitrogen and phosphorus) and stable isotopic signatures (δ 13C and δ 15N). We further explore relationships between these variables and water depth (proxy for light availability) and proximity to shore (proxy for terrestrial inputs). The seagrass assemblage was mostly monospecific (dominated by Thalassia testudinum) and restricted to shallow water (<3 m). Above-ground biomass varied widely, averaging 71.7 g dry mass m-2, yet ranging from 24.8 to 139.6 g dry mass m-2. Leaf nitrogen content averaged 2.2%, ranging from 1.76 to 2.57%, while phosphorus content averaged 0.19% and ranged from 0.15 to 0.23%. These values were high compared to other published reports for T. testudinum, indicating elevated nutrient availability within the lagoon. Seagrass stable isotopic characteristics varied slightly and were comparable with other published values. Leaf carbon signatures (δ 13C) ranged from -11.74 to -6.70‰ and were positively correlated to shoreline proximity, suggesting a contribution of terrestrial carbon to seagrass biomass. Leaf nitrogen signatures (δ 15N) ranged from -1.75 to 3.15‰ and showed no correlation with shoreline proximity, suggesting that N sources within the bay were not dominated by localized point-source discharge of treated sewage. Correlations between other seagrass bio-indicators and environmental metrics were mixed: seagrass cover declined with depth, while biomass was negatively correlated with N, indicating that light and nutrient availability may jointly regulate seagrass cover and biomass. Our work documents the response of seagrass in Bahía Almirante to light and nutrient availability and highlights the eutrophic status of this bay. Using the broad spatial coverage of our survey as a baseline, we suggest the future implementation of a continuous and spatially expansive seagrass monitoring program within this region to assess the health of these important systems subject to global and local stressors.

Chilean territory is recurrently affected by severe wildfires, which drastically reduce the forest cover and promote runoff, soil erosion and slope instabilities. To understand how the geomorphic system responds to wildfires in terms of sediment dynamics, the assessment of sediment connectivity, i.e. the property describing the relationships between compartments of a geomorphic system, is crucial. This study aims to quantify the spatial linkages between fire severity and sediment connectivity to identify common patterns and driving factors. The compound use of field data and open-source satellite imagery helped to apply the Relative differenced Normalized Burn Ratio (RdNBR) and the Index of Connectivity (IC) in the context of two consecutive wildfires, occurred in 2002 and 2015, in the Rio Toro catchment (Chile). The fire severity assessment showed that the 2002 event affected 90% of the catchment, with high severity areas representing around 70%. The 2015 wildfire instead, affected 76% of the catchment with moderate severity around 42%. Accordingly, as result of the sudden reduction in forest cover in severely affected areas, the IC changed after both wildfires with an overall increase of 1.07 and 0.54, respectively. However, only for the second disturbance, it was possible to observe a clear relationship between the RdNBR and the IC variations. The different degree of vegetation cover heterogeneity between the two pre-wildfire scenarios contributed to different fire severity and IC variability between the two disturbances. The use of open-source satellite data and the development of a weighting factor (W), to be used in IC and able to capture the land cover change driven by the wildfires, could make the application of this approach straightforward, promoting its reproducibility in other catchments for land management and risk mitigation purposes.

Resumen La cornamenta del toro de lidia es la parte anatómica más importante del animal, ya que le confiere su carácter ofensivo y a la vez le dota de pureza e integridad. En la actualidad el veterinario es el garante de la intangibilidad de los cuernos y el encargado de examinarlos para evitar el fraude. Con el presente trabajo se pretende describir la metodología existente para el análisis de la manipulación del cuerno de cara a un mayor conocimiento de la comunidad científica veterinaria. Se recogen tanto los métodos descritos en la legislación vigente como otros sistemas que se podrían utilizar en el futuro basado en las nuevas tecnologías de análisis de imagen.


Abstract A bull's horns are the most important anatomical part of the animal, since it confers its offensive character while simultaneously endowing it with purity and integrity. Currently, the veterinarian is the guarantor of the intangibility of the horns and the person in charge of examining them to prevent fraud. The present work aims to describe to the veterinary scientific community, the methodology for the analysis of the manipulation of bull horns. Both the methods described in the current legislation and other systems that could be used in the future based on the new technologies of image analysis have been collected.


Resumo A cornadura ou chifres do boi é a parte da anatomia mais importante no animal, pois confere o seu caráter ofensivo e ao mesmo tempo pureza e integridade. Atualmente é o médico veterinário o encarregado de garantir a integridade dos chifres, sendo o responsável do exame para evitar fraudes. Este artigo pretende descrever a metodologia para a análise da manipilação dos cornos/chifres, a fim de obter uma melhor compreensão da comunidade científica. São tratados os métodos recolhidos na legislação atual, além dos possiveis métodos que poderiam ser usados no futuro com base nas novas tecnologias de análises mediante imagem.

ABSTRACT

DNA barcoding is a useful tool to identify the components of mixed or bulk samples, as well as to determine individuals that lack morphologically diagnostic features. However, the reference database of DNA barcode sequences is particularly sparsely populated for marine invertebrates and for tropical taxa. We used samples collected as part of two field courses, focused on graduate training in taxonomy and systematics, to generate DNA sequences of the barcode fragments of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and mitochondrial ribosomal 16S genes for 447 individuals, representing at least 129 morphospecies of decapod crustaceans. COI sequences for 36% (51/140) of the species and 16S sequences for 26% (37/140) of the species were new to GenBank. Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery identified 140 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) which largely coincided with the morphospecies delimitations. Barcode identifications (i.e. matches to identified sequences) were especially useful for OTUs within Synalpheus, a group that is notoriously difficult to identify and rife with cryptic species, a number of which we could not identify to species, based on morphology. Non-concordance between morphospecies and barcode OTUs also occurred in a few cases of suspected cryptic species. As mitochondrial pseudogenes are particularly common in decapods, we investigate the potential for this dataset to include pseudogenes and discuss the utility of these sequences as species identifiers (i.e. barcodes). These results demonstrate that material collected and identified during training activities can provide useful incidental barcode reference samples for under-studied taxa.

A small and genetically isolated bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) population resides year-round in the Bocas del Toro Archipelago-Panama (BDT). Photo-identification and genetic data showed that this dolphin population is highly phylopatric and is formed exclusively by individuals of the "inshore form". This study aimed to investigate the trophic ecology and mercury concentrations of bottlenose dolphins in BDT to assess their coastal habits. We collected muscle samples (n = 175) of 11 potential fish prey species, and skin samples from free-ranging dolphins in BDT (n = 37) and La Guajira-Colombia (n = 7) to compare isotopic niche width. Results showed that BDT dolphins have a coastal feeding habit, belong to the "inshore form" (δ13C = -13.05 ±â€¯1.89‰), and have low mercury concentrations (mean = 1637 ±â€¯1387 ng g-1dw). However, this element is biomagnified in the BDT food chain, showing a marginal dolphins health risk (RQ = 1.00). We call for a monitoring pollutant program and conservation strategies aimed to protect the dolphin population at BDT.

ABSTRACT

DNA barcoding is a useful tool for documenting the diversity of metazoans. The most commonly used barcode markers, 16S and COI, are not considered suitable for species identification within some "basal" phyla of metazoans. Nevertheless metabarcoding studies of bulk mixed samples commonly use these markers and may obtain sequences for "basal" phyla. We sequenced mitochondrial DNA fragments of cytochrome oxidase c subunit I (COI), 16S ribosomal RNA (16S), NADH dehydrogenase subunits 2 (16S-ND2), 6 (ND6-ND3) and 4L (ND4L-MSH) for 27 species of Caribbean octocorals to create a reference barcode dataset and to compare the utility of COI and 16S to other markers more typically used for octocorals. The most common genera (Erythropodium, Ellisella, Briareum, Plexaurella, Muriceopsis and Pterogorgia) were effectively distinguished by small differences (5 or more substitutions or indels) in COI and 16S sequences. Gorgonia and Antillogorgia were effectively distinguished from each other by unique haplotypes, but the small genetic differences make distance approaches ineffective for these taxa. Plexaura, Pseudoplexaura and Eunicea were indistinguishable from each other but were generally effectively distinguished from other genera, further supporting the idea that these genera have undergone a rapid endemic radiation in the Caribbean.

ABSTRACT

A combination of physical-chemical analysis has been used to monitor the aging of red wines from D.O. Toro (Spain). The changes in the chemical composition of wines that occur over the aging time can be used to distinguish between wine samples collected after one, four, seven and ten months of aging. Different computational models were used to develop a good authenticity tool to certify wines. In this research, different models have been developed: Artificial Neural Network models (ANNs), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF) models. The results obtained for the ANN model developed with sigmoidal function in the output neuron and the RF model permit us to determine the aging time, with an average absolute percentage deviation below 1%, so it can be concluded that these two models have demonstrated their capacity to predict the age of wine.

INTRODUCTION: To identify the different types of injuries occurred during activities for the general public involving bulls. We analyze the conditions in which these injuries occurred, radiological examinations performed, treatment and complications. METHOD: We present a 10-year retrospective study examining 107 patients who came to the Emergency Department of our hospital with pathologies associated with bulls or bull calves over a period of 10years. We evaluated patient age and sex, exposure to toxic substances, period of the year in which the lesions occurred, type of injury (open, closed or mixed lesions), hospital stay, transfer to another hospital, treatment and complications. RESULTS: A total of 107 patients (98 males and 9 females), with a mean age of 41.68years, were treated for injuries in popular bull festivals. 77.57% of the injuries occurred during the months of July, August and September. 95 out of the 107 patients (88.78%) were hospitalized. The total number of injuries included: 91 open wounds, 10 bruises, 27 fractures and 5 traumatic brain injuries. 83 injuries (62.40%) affected the lower limbs and perineum. The treatment received was: suture (2), Friedreich (69), hematoma drainage (1), orthopedic surgery (5), exploratory laparotomy (6) and neurosurgery (1). Two patients died. CONCLUSIONS: Injuries occurring during traditional bull-related festivals are different in patients with open wounds from patients who suffer blunt trauma. The pathogenesis of these injuries must be understood in order to improve patient survival.

El presente artículo busca entender el motivo por el que Lacan extiende el modelo borromeico de cordel hacia un modelo tórico. Introduciendo el problema de la transferencia en el nudo en las últimas clases del seminario "El Sinthome", el "amor" parece convertirse en el concepto articulador de desarrollo de la psicopatología borromeica y en la clave para abordar lo real.


This article seeks to understand why Lacan extends the borromeic model of string to a toric model. Introducing the problem of transfer in the knot in the last classes of the seminar \"The Sinthome\", \"love\" seems to become the articulator concept to development the borromeic psychopathology and the key to addressing the real.

Resumen La postitis es una patología que afecta a la mucosa parietal y extremo anterior de las vainas conjuntivales del prepucio, con afectación de la porción tegumentaria o sin esta, y que puede incapacitar la protrusión del pene. Dentro de las causas predisponentes en toros están las particularidades morfogenéticas, traumáticas, infecciosas pruriginosas, y en el caso del contexto del presente estudio una de las más frecuentes es la falta de higiene. Los signos más evidentes son: dificultad o imposibilidad para copular, edema, necrosis de mucosa prolapsada, miasis, hemorragia, absceso, retención urinaria, hipertermia local y dolor a la palpación. El tratamiento médico o quirúrgico depende de la valoración de la lesión y libido, del valor del toro, la edad, el compromiso peneano, el manejo y las complicaciones posoperatorias, el personal capacitado, entre otras. En esta investigación se realizó un estudio descriptivo no probabilístico en animales padrotes. Se describió el seguimiento médico-quirúrgico de toros con edades entre los 4,5 y los 9 años, con enfermedad de mucosa y tejido conjuntivo prepucial. A la exploración, la constante clínica fue disminución de la libido, inflamación ulcerosa de mucosa prepucial, fimosis, y en siete de ellos, retención urinaria en el saco. El objetivo de este informe fue describir la técnica quirúrgica que se utilizó para la solución de una serie de 25 casos de postitis en toros cebú del departamento de Córdoba (Colombia).


Abstract Posthitis is a pathology that affects the parietal mucosa and the extreme anterior of the connective sheaths of the prepuce, with or without involvement of the tegumentary portion, and can impede the protrusion of the penis. Predisposing causes in bulls include morphogenetic, traumatic, and infectious pruritic characteristics; in the present study, one of the most frequent causes was lack of hygiene. The most obvious signs are: difficult or impossible copulation, edema, necrosis of prolapsed mucosa, myiasis, hemorrhage, abscess, urinary retention, local hyperthermia, and pain at palpation. Medical or surgical treatment depends on the assessment of the lesion and libido, the value of the bull, age, penile involvement, management and postoperative complications, and availability of trained personnel, among others. This research presents a non-probabilistic descriptive study of breeding animals, describing the medical-surgical follow-up of bulls aged between 4.5 and 9 years with disease of the mucosa and connective tissue of the prepuce. At examination, constant clinical symptoms were decreased libido, ulcerative inflammation of the preputial mucosa, phimosis, and, in 7 animals, urinary retention in the sac. The objective of this report was to describe the surgical technique used for the solution of a series of 25 cases of posthitis in Zebu bulls in the Department of Córdoba, Colombia.

Dentro das causas de pré-disposição nos touros estão as particularidades morfogenéticas, traumáticas, infecciosas pruriginosas, e no caso do contexto deste estudo uma das mais frequentes é a falta de higiene. Os sinais mais evidentes são: dificuldade ou impossibilidade para copular, edema, necrose de mucosa prolapsada, miíase, hemorragia, abcesso, retenção urinária, hipertermia local e dor à palpação. O tratamento médico o cirúrgico depende da avaliação da lesão e libido, do valor do touro, a idade, o compromisso peniano, o manejo e as complicações pós-operatórias, o pessoal capacitado, entre outras. Nesta pesquisa se realizou um estudo descritivo não probabilístico em animais reprodutores. Se descreveu o seguimento médico cirúrgico de touros com idades entre os 4,5 e os 9 anos, com doença de mucosa e tecido conjuntivo prepucial. Durante o exame, a constante clínica foi a diminuição da libido, inflamação ulcerosa de mucosa prepucial, fimose, e em sete deles, retenção urinária no saco. O objetivo deste informe foi descrever a técnica cirúrgica utilizada na solução de uma série de 25 casos de postite em touros zebu do estado de Córdoba (Colômbia).

An investigation in Panama found that Punta Toro virus species complex (PTVs) may contribute to febrile illnesses with symptoms mirroring those of dengue fever. However, further studies are needed to determine if PTV infection causes only a mild disease or if it can have more serious manifestations in some patients.

ABSTRACT

Rift Valley fever is a mosquito-borne zoonotic disease affecting ruminants and humans. Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV: family Bunyaviridae, genus Phlebovirus) causes abortions and fetal malformations in ruminants, and hemorrhagic fever, encephalitis, or retinitis in humans. The live-attenuated MP-12 vaccine is conditionally licensed for veterinary use in the US. However, this vaccine lacks a marker for the differentiation of vaccinated from infected animals (DIVA). NSs gene is dispensable for RVFV replication, and thus, rMP-12 strains lacking NSs gene is applicable to monitor vaccinated animals. However, the immunogenicity of MP-12 lacking NSs was not as high as parental MP-12. Thus, chimeric MP-12 strains encoding NSs from either Toscana virus (TOSV), sandfly fever Sicilian virus (SFSV) or Punta Toro virus Adames strain (PTA) were characterized previously. Although chimeric MP-12 strains are highly immunogenic, the attenuation through the S-segment remains unknown. Using pathogenic ZH501 strain, we aimed to demonstrate the attenuation of ZH501 strain through chimeric S-segment encoding either the NSs of TOSV, SFSV, PTA, or Punta Toro virus Balliet strain (PTB). In addition, we characterized rZH501 encoding a human dominant-negative PKR (PKRΔE7), which also enhances the immunogenicity of MP-12. Study done on mice revealed that attenuation of rZH501 occurred through the S-segment encoding either PKRΔE7 or SFSV NSs. However, rZH501 encoding either TOSV, PTA, or PTB NSs in the S-segment uniformly caused lethal encephalitis. Our results indicated that the S-segments encoding PKRΔE7 or SFSV NSs are attenuated and thus applicable toward next generation MP-12 vaccine candidates that encode a DIVA marker.
