ABSTRACT
This article examines whether a shortage of marriageable women induces trafficking of women for forced marriage in China as commonly expected. I assemble a data set of 1,215 transactions of women for forced marriage from 2010-2018 using court documents. My analysis suggests that the trafficking of women is not a direct consequence of the local shortage of marriageable women. The fundamental causes are entrenched patriarchal values as indicated by a high local sex ratio at birth, sex-specific internal migration, and the marriage squeeze endured by socially marginalized men in the context of a shortage of women in the population.

Este artigo reflete sobre as facilidades e dificuldades no enfrentamento ao tráfico sexual de mulheres. Trata-se de um estudo exploratório de natureza qualitativa; entrevistaram-se representantes de instituições governamentais e não governamentais do Brasil e de Portugal. O material coletado foi submetido à análise temática. Verificou-se a existência de vários obstáculos: desde uma legislação dúbia, estigmatização das mulheres, morosidade investigativa, naturalização de práticas violadoras até falta de recursos. Em contrapartida, percebem-se avanços, como: a gradativa visibilidade e sensibilidade social ao tema; ações de parceria entre as instituições, assim como a busca de diálogo e aprendizado com os grupos representativos dessas pessoas. Recomenda-se: a integração das ações, serviços, políticas e setores que lidam com o tráfico; a formação dos profissionais com a participação de pessoas que já sofreram tal experiência, e a inserção deste assunto nas políticas de violência contra a mulher.
This paper proposes a reflection on the facilitators and obstacles in addressing sex trafficking. This is an exploratory qualitative study, that interviews representatives of governmental and nongovernmental institutions in Brazil and Portugal. A thematic analysis was performed on the collected material. Several obstacles were found, ranging from dubious legislation, stigmatization of women, delays in investigation, usual and accepted transgressive practices and lack of resources. On the other hand, we see advances such as the gradual visibility and social sensitivity to the subject; partnership actions between institutions and the search for dialogue and learning with representative groups of the victims. It is recommended the integration of actions, services, policies and sectors that deal with trafficking; the training of professionals with the participation of people who have suffered such an experience, and the inclusion of this issue in policies addressing violence against women.
Este articulo reflexiona sobre las facilidades y dificultades en el enfrentamiento al trafico sexual de mujeres. em este estudio, exploratorio y de naturaleza cualitativa, se entrevistaron representantes de instituciones gubernamentales y no gubernamentales de Brasil y Portugal. El material recuperado fue sometido a un análisis temático. Se identificaron varios obstáculos, entre ellos una legislación con dificultades en su formulación, estigmatización, demoras, naturalización de prácticas de violación y falta de recursos. En contraposición, se encontraron avances relacionados con la sensibilidad social hacia el tema, asi como acciones compartidas entre las instituciones, así como la búsqueda de un diálogo y aprendizaje con los grupos que representan estas personas. Se recomienda la integración de acciones, servicios, politicas y sectores relacionados con el tráfico, la formación de profesionales con personas que sufrieron tal experiencia y la inserción de este asunto en las politicas de enfrentamento a la violencia contra la mujer.
