ABSTRACT

Two new species of Megarthrus are described from cloud forests of the Mexican state of Veracruz: M. cavianae Rodríguez, Navarrete-Heredia Arriaga-Varela sp. nov., and Chiapas:  M. chiapas Cuccodoro sp. nov. They differ from the two hitherto known Mexican species M. altivagans Bernhauer, 1929, and M. alatorreorum Rodríguez Navarrete-Heredia, 2015, both from temperate forests of the Transmexican Volcanic Belt, by having synapomorphic features of the M. inaequalis-supergroup of species. This lineage includes all the Central and South American members of the genus, with the inclusion of these species, the distribution of the group is extend by more than 5 degree of latitude to the North. Within this lineage, the two new species share a very peculiar morphology of the male abdominal sternite VIII found elsewhere in the genus only in M. flavosignatus Bierig, 1940, and M. zunilensis Sharp, 1887, with which they form the M. zunilensis-group of species defined here.

ABSTRACT

Wesmaelius (Kimminsia) nanacamilpa Marquez & Contreras, sp. n., a brown lacewing from Tlaxcala state, Mexico is described and illustrated. This is the second recorded species of Wesmaelius from Mexico, and the third from Middle America. Males of the new species may be identified by parameres separate apically, styliform sclerites directed basally, as well as a rounded gonarcus with a short entoprocessus. Females may be distinguished from closely related species by a subgenital plate with the central plate broadly incised basally. There are now 16 species of Wesmaelius known from the New World.

ABSTRACT

Osgoodomys banderanus is a recognized and endemic rodent species of western Mexico, an area known for its high biodiversity and number of endemisms. Phylogeographical relationships within this taxon were analyzed based on mitochondrial (ND3, tRNA-Arginine, ND4L and partial ND4) and nuclear (GHR) nucleotide sequences. We obtained a total of 112 samples from 22 localities, covering the complete distribution of the species. Phylogenetic analyses using Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian inference confirmed that Osgoodomys is a monophyletic group. In addition, phylogenetic and phylogeographic analyses detected three major clades, which do not coincide with the recognized subspecies of O. banderanus. The genetic lineages detected are the western clade (Nayarit, Jalisco and northern Colima), the central clade (Colima, Michoacán, and northern Guerrero) and the eastern clade (central and southern Guerrero). Genetic distances among clades (5-9%) and nucleotide substitutions (30-88) among haplogroups were high, especially in the southern group. Mountain ranges such as the Transmexican Volcanic Belt and the Sierra Madre del Sur, as well as the Balsas River act as geographical barriers for Osgoodomys. Our results suggest the presence of three independent species, which need to be characterized morphologically to confirm our hypothesis.

ABSTRACT

Thirty one new state records of species of Aphodiinae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) from Mexico are presented, 24 species belong to Aphodiini and seven species to Eupariini into the genera Agrilinellus, Alloblackburneus, Aphotaenius, Ataenius, Blackburneus, Cephalocyclus, Coelotrachelus, Euparia, Euparixia, Geomyphilus, Gonaphodiellus, Gonaphodiopsis, Haroldiellus, Liothorax, Nialaphodius, Odontolytes, Oscarinus, Pharaphodius, and Planolinellus. New records are from the states of Aguascalientes, Baja California, Baja California Sur, Campeche, Colima, Chiapas, Estado de México, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Michoacán, Morelos, Nayarit, Puebla, Sonora, Tabasco, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, Veracruz, Zacatecas, and Distrito Federal. A checklist with updated nomenclature is included for the recorded species of Aphodiini and Eupariini from Mexico.
