ABSTRACT

We report the effects of varying physiological and other properties on the heat and water exchange in the maxilloturbinate structure (MT) of the bearded seal (Erignathus barbatus or Eb) in realistic environments, using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. We find that the water retention in percent is very high (about 90 %) and relatively unaffected by either cold (-30 °C) or warm (10 °C) conditions. The retention of heat is also high, around 80 % . Based on a consideration of entropy production by the maxilloturbinate system, we show that anatomical and physiological properties of the seal provide good conditions for heat and water exchange at the mucus lining in the seal's nasal cavity. At normal values of tidal volume and maxilloturbinate (MT) length, the air temperature in the MT reaches the body temperature before the air has left the MT channels. This confers a safety factor which is expected to be helpful in exercise, when ventilation increases.

ABSTRACT

One of the methods of increasing the availability of drinking water is to reduce water losses in existing water supply systems (WSS). The need to manage water losses in WSS is highlighted in the new Directive (EU) 2020/2184 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 16 December 2020 on the Quality of Water Intended for Human Consumption. It was indicated that the main cause of water losses is underinvestment in the maintenance and renovation of network infrastructure. The new legal provisions require a risk assessment to be carried out in the water supply system, taking into account the risk of leaks. The paper presents the concept of estimating the risk of water losses in the water supply network using the three-parameter risk assessment method and risk maps. The framework of the water balance proposed by International Water Association (IWA) were also presented, including the Infrastructure Leakage Index (ILI) for assessment of the water supply system Leakage Performance Category (LPC). The analysis was carried out for a water supply system used by 200,000 inhabitants. The LPC of the system was determined based on the ILI index. Then the water supply network pipes that could potentially be a source of leaks were identified. The analysis of the risk of water losses for the examined pipes allowed to determine which pipes should be first chosen to reduce the risk of water losses, i.e. active search for leaks.

RESUMO As perdas físicas de água em uma rede de distribuição podem ser causadas pelo excesso de pressão na rede, erroneamente associada a bom atendimento. Assim, é necessário não apenas reduzir o excesso de pressão, mas também saber onde ocorrem as perdas para providenciar soluções. O uso de ferramentas, como o Sistema de Informações Geográficas, e as simulações computacionais da rede são essenciais para a redução de perdas. Foi então realizado o estudo de uma rede real de distribuição de água em uma região montanhosa do sul de Minas Gerais, por meio do levantamento do setor a ser estudado, com o uso desse sistema de informações, e então feitas três simulações com o uso do software Epanet 2.0, sendo uma delas o cenário-base de referência para comparação com os cenários onde se realizaram melhorias. Depois, foram feitos mapas com o uso de do mesmo sistema informacional para levantamento das pressões e das mudanças realizadas na rede. Também foi feita uma projeção populacional no horizonte de 20 anos, tomando como partida o ano de 2020, para verificar se os indicadores de eficiência energética decairiam ao longo do tempo, com o aumento da população. Assim, os resultados dos três cenários (base, 32 e 35) foram 57,4, 48,2 e 46,6%, respectivamente, indicando redução de perdas conforme a redução da pressão nos cenários, e os indicadores de eficiência energética mostraram uma queda ao longo do horizonte estudado, contudo aceitáveis. Conclui-se que o uso desse sistema aplicado à rede de distribuição de água contribuiu para as análises com vistas à redução das perdas reais e de eficiência hídrica e energética em redes de distribuição de água.


ABSTRACT Excess of water head usually is misidentified as synonymous of good service, leading to water losses in the distribution network. Reducing excess of pressure and identify leaks using tools like Geographic Information Systems and computational simulations is essential to reduce water losses. The study was carried out simulating a real water distribution system in a mountainous city of south of Minas Gerais, with Geographic Information Systems survey of the region and three simulations using the Epanet software, one of which being the original scenario to compare with improved ones. Subsequently, maps using Geographic Information Systems assess pressure and modifications at the network were generated. A populational projection with a 20-year horizon, starting in 2020, was also carried out to assess whether energy efficiency indicators would decrease over time with the increase in population. The losses at base scenario and scenarios 32 and 35 was 57.4, 48.2, and 46.6%, showing a reduction in losses along pressure reduction, and energy efficiency indicators showed a decrease over the studied horizon, though still acceptable. This article concludes that the use of Geographic Information Systems applied to the water distribution network contributed to the analysis to reduce real losses and water and energy efficiency in water distribution networks.

RESUMO A cobrança pelo uso da água como instrumento econômico de gestão deve orientar os usuários quanto ao valor do recurso hídrico e incentivar o combate ao uso perdulário. Metodologias recentes inserem mecanismos relacionados às boas práticas no uso da água, mensurado no saneamento por meio do indicador de perdas percentuais na distribuição. Contudo, desprezam-se as perdas ocorridas nas etapas anteriores, bem como a essencialidade do serviço para a sociedade. Usando variáveis que abarcam todo o sistema de abastecimento desde a captação, este trabalho propôs uma metodologia de cobrança que amplia e penaliza as perdas reais, ao mesmo tempo em que permite descontos decorrentes da retirada para atendimento às necessidades mais fundamentais da população. Revela-se como resultado uma equação simples e transparente, com homogeneidade nas parcelas precificadas, que pode ter a punição e os privilégios ajustados às especificidades da bacia em que seja aplicada.


Abstract Freshwater use charging as an economic instrument must guide users as to the value of water resources and encourage the struggle against wasteful use. Recent methodologies include mechanisms related to good practices in the use of water resources, measured in sanitation sector by the indicator of percentage losses in distribution. However, leakages that occurred in the previous stages are ignored, as well as the essentiality of the service for society. Using variables that cover the entire supply system since withdrawn point, this paper proposes a freshwater charging methodology that conceptually expand and penalizes real losses, while imputing discounts resulting from the water use to supply a minimum volume to meet basic needs of the population. The result is a simple and transparent equation, with homogeneity in the variables charged, which might have the punishment and privileges adjusted to the specificities of the watershed in which it is applied.

ABSTRACT

The revision of the Drinking Water Directive (DWD), which the process of consultation by the European Parliament is coming to the end, includes a commitment for all Member States to assess the level of water leakage. The overarching aim of this action is to reduce water loss through leaks. In regard to this, use of performance indicators as suitable to enable assessment of water utility performance with regard to leakage reduction, including impacts on environment and cost-efficiency, is recommended. The paper provides results from water losses evaluation with the set of performance indicators (PI), considering dependence on the availability of resources and specific operating conditions. An analysis of different PI that are necessary to evaluate in most of leakage reduction methods was conducted considering step-by-step approach. Furthermore, the most relevant data for leakage analysis and management on a network level was determined. Presented PI can be used to improve leakage management of small water supply system. Similarly as in the Deming cycle, the described tool provides for planning activities, executing activities in accordance with the plan, checking the degree of execution of objectives included in the plan, and on the basis of conducted analyses and lessons learned, the so-called improvement. The results of the analysis lead to the conclusion that through a comprehensive, systematically improved strategy, the high effectiveness of the system could be reach. The reliable monitoring does not have to be based on advanced technological methods, which are often unavailable for small water supply system, due to high investment and operating costs. The results indicate that integrated IT systems, as SCADA, might not be directly beneficial to water loss management in small networks with moderate leakage levels.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: This study aims to identify issues plaguing rural India's water supply chain and present a general methodology for the implementation of an IoT-based water distribution and management system in a rural setting. Through the literature review, significant hurdles in the water supply chain of rural India, as well as the potential role of IoT in water supply chain management, were recognized. An implementation plan was proposed to design an IoT-based water distribution and management system with the help of flow meters, ultrasonic sensors, motors, etc. Also, the feasibility of such a system was explored with the help of a use case. This study highlighted that one of the most significant reasons for water scarcity in rural India is the lack of proper infrastructure leading to water resources mismanagement. In the context of our use case, despite adequate availability of physical water for consumption, by the time water is delivered to the consumers, a significant amount of it is wasted due to the lack of an efficient water management system. It was determined that the investment return for the proposed system would break even within three months of installment. This study's results are based on inputs from governmental data collected in the Census report of 2011. As such, the ground level scenario is bound to be comparatively different today. This study is anticipated to guide governmental organizations and policymakers in the formulation of new strategies.

ABSTRACT

The results of the analysis of water utility performance studies based on data envelopment analysis (DEA) can be very sensitive to the methodological approach and the variables employed. This study investigates approaches and variables for developing countries in order to identify an adequate model for universal access. Three models were developed and compared. The first used traditional variables, the second considered the quality of service variables, and the last are expanded on the second by incorporating the realization of the human right to water into efficiency estimation. Methodological approaches comprising the variable returns to scale DEA (most common for developing countries) and slack-based directional distance function (employed in this study) were also compared. The case study of 77 Brazilian water utilities suggests that a model that incorporates the objective of universal access in the efficiency estimation changes substantialy utility efficiency scores. Therefore, utilities that make investments to reach the universal access can be penalized since traditional models incorporate the expenses, but fail to capture the results. The research conclusions suggest that approaches and variable choices are likely to impact on the analysis results, misrepresenting them regardless of the purpose for using DEA in the study.

Background and Objectives: SARS-CoV-2-induced ARDS is a new entity that should be characterized as it appears to be different from standard ARDS. Hypernatremia is a biological alteration that seems to occur very often in this population without any clear cause. The present study aims to clarify the possible causes of hypernatremia and evaluate its impact on patient outcome. Patients and Methods: We conducted a retrospective one-day prevalence study in 2 intensive care units, which only treated COVID-19 patients with moderate to severe ARDS. We measured blood and urine electrolytes in all the patients. Patients with chronic renal failure or renal replacement therapy were excluded from the study. Hypernatremia was defined as plasma sodium levels above 145 mmol/L. Results: Inclusion criteria were met in 17 out of 24 patients. Hypernatremia was present in 52% patients. All had a natriuresis higher than 20 mmol/L and a urine osmolality above 600 mOsm/L. Hypernatremia was acquired in ICU as all the patients had a normal serum sodium level at admission. Conclusion: The incidence of hypernatremia was elevated and appears to be linked to significant insensible water losses. This should trigger us to optimize the maintenance fluid therapy in critically ill patients with SARS-CoV-2-induced ARDS.

ABSTRACT

The main objective of this study is to estimate the total economic loss due to inefficient use of irrigation water in Tunisia. Several approaches have been used for this purpose. The optimal level of water application for different crops is calculated using the actual crop evapotranspiration which is based on FAO-56 method. The residual imputation and yield comparison methods have been used to estimate the economic value of irrigation water for different irrigated crops in different bioclimatic areas. For the empirical analysis, primary data were obtained from a series of surveys that covered 78% of the total irrigated areas and were collected within the framework of the "Virtual Water and Food Security in Tunisia project" (2013-2015). Secondary data about land distribution of crops in Tunisia were taken from the Ministry of Agriculture (2016). Around 724 farms were randomly sampled considering their bioclimatic area, farm type, and production system. The survey included the main 20 crops produced in Tunisia. Results show that most of farmers are either under or over utilizing irrigation water. The value of total direct economic losses, at the country level, of both types of water inefficiencies, was estimated to around 470 million Tunisian Dinars. Therefore, an improvement of water use efficiency at field level through dissemination of information/knowledge on irrigation scheduling and crop water requirements by extension services to farmers is needed to reduce this huge economic loss, reach higher sustainability in water use and improve food security.

ABSTRACT

The effects of the PSE meat proportion (0 to 100%) and sodium chloride contents (0 to 2%) on technological and saltiness of restructured cured-smoked pork loins were investigated by using response surface methodology (RSM). Lipid oxidation, pH values and reheating loss of the products were most affected by the proportion of PSE meat, while the salt concentration mainly affected the water activity, expressible moisture values, hardness, chewiness and sliceability of the products. Perception of the salt flavor increased with the addition of salt and proportion of PSE meat in the elaborated products, where the addition of 0.5% salt was considered as ideal by consumers. It was concluded that an amount close to 0.8% salt is required for satisfactory maintenance of the technological characteristics of the restructured cured-smoked pork loins, especially when PSE meat is used in the formulation.

ABSTRACT

There are numerous wetland rehabilitation projects worldwide, but their efficiency is seldom assessed comprehensively. Oxbow lakes are wetlands of particular sensitivity. Within a large-scale floodplain rehabilitation project in Hungary, the Old Drava Programme, water replenishment was first carried out for the Cún-Szaporca oxbow lakes, a key area in the project. To assess its sustainability, the entire hydrological system has been monitored. From the data of hydrological monitoring (infiltration, soil moisture, groundwater/lakewater interaction) it is claimed that water replenishment involves significant losses through seepage (4.1 and 1.46 mm d-1) and evaporation (3.01 and 1.44 mm d-1) in the studied pre-intervention and replenishment periods, resp. Infiltration alone is insufficient to replenish groundwater and raise oxbow lake levels. In the critical summer half-year evaporation is intensive in the neighbouring agricultural fields. Groundwater table dynamics are controlled by hyporheic and groundwater flow. Major impact on the water balance of the oxbow lakes is exerted by the regime of the Drava River. A deepened lakebed is recommended to ensure more effective water retention in the oxbow lake. From the local study conclusions are drawn for the feasibility of rehabilitation at floodplain scale and in areas with similar hydromorphological conditions.

ABSTRACT

Water scarcity is one of the main problems faced by many regions in the XXIst century. In this context, the need to reduce leakages from water distribution systems has gained almost universal acceptance. The concept of sustainable economic level of leakage (SELL) has been proposed to internalize the environmental and resource costs within economic level of leakage calculations. However, because these costs are not set by the market, they have not often been calculated. In this paper, the directional-distance function was used to estimate the shadow price of leakages as a proxy of their environmental and resource costs. This is a pioneering approach to the economic valuation of leakage externalities. An empirical application was carried out for the main Chilean water companies. The estimated results indicated that for 2014, the average shadow price of leakages was approximately 32% of the price of the water delivered. Moreover, as a sensitivity analysis, the shadow prices of the leakages were calculated from the perspective of the water companies' managers and the regulator. The methodology and findings of this study are essential for supporting the decision process of reducing leakage, contributing to the improvement of economic, social and environmental efficiency and sustainability of urban water supplies.

ABSTRACT

The study analysed the effect of frozen storage duration (FSD: 0, 1, 9, 15 or 21 months) and display duration (DD: 0-24 h post-slaughter-, 3 and 6 days) in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on lamb quality. pH, colour, lipid oxidation, water holding capacity and instrumental texture were performed on Longissimus muscle in displayed fresh and thawed meat. FSD affected all the variables showing lower differences between fresh and 1 month storage than among them and longer FSD. Only cooking losses were not affected by DD in thawed meats. It was observed a general decrease in quality (lower redness and water holding capacity; higher yellowness and lipid oxidation) as FSD or DD increased and only texture was improved over DD being thawed meat more tender. In conclusion, lamb storage at -18°C should not exceed 1 month if thawed meat would be later displayed in MAP while meat would have an acceptable quality up to 21 months without subsequent display.
