ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder affecting women of reproductive age, and it has emerged as a significant global public health issue. This study aimed to investigate the effects of web-based health education on nursing students' knowledge, adaptive healthy measures, and attitudes toward PCOS. METHODS: A two-group randomized controlled trial (RCT) with pre-test and immediate post-test assessments was conducted. Study participants were recruited using a simple random sampling method from the Faculty of Nursing, Mansoura University, Egypt. A questionnaire consisting of six sections was developed to collect data, which was analyzed with the SPSS 23.0 using Student's t-test, Pearson's correlation test, and chi-square test analysis of variance. RESULTS: The analysis revealed a significant increase in knowledge scores post-intervention, with the web-based learning groups (32.2 ± 10.5) outperforming the traditional learning group (22.1 ± 10.2), with (p < 0.05). Similarly, there was a notable improvement in adaptive healthy measures scores post-intervention, with the web-based learning group (8.9 ± 2.4) showing better results than the traditional group (6.5 ± 2.9), with (p < 0.05). In terms of attitudes toward PCOS, the web-based group (18.2 ± 4.9) displayed a significant improvement compared to the traditional group (11.7 ± 5.2), with (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that web-based learning is more effective than traditional methods in enhancing nursing students' knowledge, adaptive healthy measures, and attitudes toward PCOS. ABSTRACT

Anesthesia clinicians care for patients undergoing a wide range of procedures, making access to reliable references crucial. However, existing resources have key limitations. This technical report describes the development of an in-house anesthesia case reference application designed for use in a tertiary academic hospital. Additionally, it details our experiences in maintaining this system over a 22-month period and compares this system to alternative resources. Utilizing JavaScript and the React library, we developed a cross-platform perioperative reference application. Over fifty articles, encompassing anesthetic considerations for various surgical disciplines, have been created. Furthermore, we conducted a preliminary analysis of analytics data. In the 22 months since the application's inception, the application has garnered over 22,000 views from local users. While there are more than 150 registered users, the number of unregistered users accessing the application on the hospital network remains unknown. Notably, 70% of users accessed the application through a mobile device. The most popular articles centered around procedures with diverse and specific surgeon preferences. Currently, the reported case reference application is routinely utilized by anesthesia clinicians at our institution. Future endeavors will concentrate on establishing a robust content management workflow to broaden the coverage of topics.

ABSTRACT

Medical students face challenging but important topics they must learn in short periods of time, such as autonomic pharmacology. Autonomic pharmacology is difficult in that it requires students to synthesize detailed anatomy, physiology, clinical reasoning, and pharmacology. The subject poses a challenge to learn as it is often introduced early in medical school curricula. To ease the difficulty of learning autonomic pharmacology, we created a free web application, PharmaMemory (www.pharmamemory.com), that interactively depicts the effects of high-yield autonomic drugs on the human body. PharmaMemory provides users with the opportunity to read and quiz themselves on the mechanisms, side effects, indications, and contraindications of these drugs while interacting with the application. We provided PharmaMemory to first-year medical students for three consecutive years of quality improvement and assessed the application's perceived effects on learning via user surveys. Survey feedback showed that users viewed PharmaMemory favorably and self-reported increased knowledge and confidence in the subject of autonomic pharmacology. Comments revealed that users liked the website's visuals, opportunity for challenged recall, and conciseness. PharmaMemory utilizes challenged recall, visual stimulation, and interactive learning to provide users with a multifaceted learning tool. Preliminary data suggest that students find this method of learning beneficial. Further studies are needed to assess PharmaMemory compared with more traditional learning methods such as PowerPoint or text-based learning. Additionally, further research is needed to quantitatively assess reduction in cognitive load.NEW & NOTEWORTHY PharmaMemory (www.pharmamemory.com) is a free web application that interactively depicts the effects of high-yield autonomic drugs on the human body.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has precipitated an accelerated shift in education, moving from traditional learning to web-based learning. This transition introduced a notable transactional distance (TD) between the instructors and learners. Although disease control and staff and students' safety are the top priorities during a pandemic, the successful delivery of education is equally crucial. However, the ramifications of this swift transition are particularly critical in the context of dental education. Dental education is inherently practice oriented, necessitating hands-on training and manual skills development, which poses unique challenges to distance learning approaches. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine dental students' web-based learning satisfaction and experience of TD, investigate the predictors of web-based learning satisfaction, and explore the perceptions of students about the advantages and disadvantages of web-based learning. METHODS: This study explored the factors associated with web-based learning satisfaction using TD theory during the transition to web-based education. Psychological factors that could influence satisfaction were adapted from the health belief model. We conducted a cross-sectional web-based survey of 345 dental students from 2 institutions in South Korea who were enrolled in the spring semester of 2020. Data were collected between July 8 and September 14, 2020. Qualitative analysis was used to examine responses to open-ended questions concerning perceptions of web-based learning. RESULTS: A multivariate hierarchical linear regression model was used to analyze the effects of student characteristics, TD, and psychological factors (ie, perceived risk of infection and efficacy belief of web-based learning) on web-based learning satisfaction. The average score for web-based learning satisfaction was 3.62 (SD 0.84), just above the midpoint of the possible range (1-5). Self-regulated learning (ß=0.08; P=.046), learner-instructor interaction (ß=0.08; P=.03), and learner-content interaction (ß=0.64; P<.001) were associated with higher levels of satisfaction. Moreover, a significant association was revealed between high efficacy beliefs in web-based learning (ß=0.20; P<.001) and satisfaction. Although the learning structure (synchronous vs asynchronous) did not exhibit a significant association with satisfaction, the qualitative analysis results revealed that each structure possesses distinct strengths and weaknesses. The students in synchronous learning (79/345, 22.9%) recognized heightened autonomy in the "learning environment" (19/79, 24%); however, technical issues (28/79, 35%) and reduced concentration (15/79, 19%) were identified as downsides. Conversely, the students in asynchronous settings (266/345, 77.1%) emphasized unlimited access to learning content (74/266, 27.8%) and the flexibility of "learning in preferred time" (69/266, 25.9%). Nevertheless, challenges, such as self-management difficulties (66/266, 24.8%) and limited interactions (55/266, 20.7%), were evident. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that efforts to minimize TD, facilitating self-regulated learning and interaction among students and instructors, are critical for achieving web-based learning satisfaction. Moreover, establishing a common understanding among students regarding the necessity and efficacy of web-based learning during epidemics could enhance their satisfaction.

INTRODUCTION: In cytopathology education, Virtual Microscopy e-learning modules (VM-eLM) have achieved remarkable results in the improvement and personalization of learning. However, it remains to be determined whether these modules can significantly contribute to improving the accuracy of cytological diagnosis. The aim of this work was to create a VM-eLM for gynecologic cytopathology education designed to improve screening and interpretation skills in two groups of cytologists: experienced and nonexperienced. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The module was designed in Moodle with both Whole Slide Images and Static Images taken from Papanicolaou smears that were diagnosed as: negative for intraepithelial lesion, low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion, high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion, squamous cell carcinoma, or adenocarcinoma. We assessed the effectiveness of the module using 1) clinical quality indicators to measure skill development and 2) a user survey. RESULTS: After training, participants significantly improved their cytological screening skills, decreasing their false negative diagnosis by 78% in the non-experienced group and eliminating them entirely in the experienced group. Nonexperienced participants also significantly increased their recognition of low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion by 31% and 50%, respectively. Participants positively evaluated the module, highlighting its novelty, the possibility to train remotely, the immediate feedback and the quality of the Whole Slide Images. CONCLUSIONS: We designed, implemented and tested a VM-eLM for Gynecologic Cytopathology Education that improved cytological screening skills for both non-experienced and experienced cytologists, also increasing the diagnostic accuracy of preinvasive lesions by less experienced cytologists. The module was positively evaluated by participants, who perceived an improvement in their interpretive skills.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: The study aimed to determine the following four differences between students in the fields of nursing and health systems management: (a) attitudes towards web-based learning, (b) online course anxiety, (c) online course self-efficacy, and (d) intentional use of technology for learning and find factors that influence students' intentional learning with technology. Methods: The study utilized an explanatory sequential mixed methods design. The study was performed according to the checklist for assessment and reporting of document analysis for mixed methods design and research in health professions education. We included students from the School of Health Sciences, including those studying nursing and health systems management. There were 304 students included in our study. Results: Students from health systems management had more positive attitudes toward web-based learning than nursing students. Health science students' years of study, online course self-efficacy, and web-based learning influence intentional learning with technology among students. The qualitative finding corresponds only with the qualitative result demonstrated that online course self-efficacy predicts the intentional use of technology for learning. Conclusions: It is needed to consider factors for designing effective online learning experiences in health science, enabling educators to enhance intentional technology-based learning for nursing and health systems management students through web-based learning optimization.

ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: Little is known about how athletic trainers (ATs) learn clinical documentation, but previous studies have identified that ATs desire a need for more educational resources specific to documentation. OBJECTIVE: To obtain ATs' perspectives on learning clinical documentation. DESIGN: Qualitative study. SETTING: Web-based audio interviews. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: 29 ATs who completed two different continuing education (CE) clinical documentation modules. Participants averaged 36.2±9.0 years of age and included 16 women and 13 men representing 21 U.S. states and 8 clinical practice settings. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Participants were recruited from a group of ATs who completed one of two web-based CE clinical documentation modules. Within 3 weeks of completing the educational modules, participants were interviewed regarding their perceptions of how they learn clinical documentation, including their experiences completing the modules. Using the Consensual Qualitative Research approach, 3 researchers and 1 internal auditor inductively analyzed the data during 5 rounds of consensus coding. Trustworthiness measures included multi-analyst triangulation, data source triangulation, and peer review. RESULTS: Two themes emerged from the data, including 1) mechanisms of learning documentation and 2) benefits of the educational modules. ATs primarily learn documentation through professional education and workforce training, but training appears to be inconsistent. Participants perceived both educational modules were effective at increasing their knowledge and confidence related to learning documentation. The CE modules incited a growth mindset and intention to change behavior. CONCLUSIONS: ATs are satisfied with web-based CE learning experiences specific to clinical documentation and may benefit from more CE offered in these formats. Educators are encouraged to integrate clinical documentation principles throughout the curriculum, during both didactic and clinical education. Workforce training is also valuable for improving knowledge and skills related to clinical documentation, and employers should onboard and support ATs as they start new positions.

BACKGROUND: Teaching hospitals have been regarded as the primary settings where doctors teach and practice high-quality medicine, as well as where medical students learn the profession and acquire their initial clinical skills. A percentage of instruction is now done over the internet or via electronic techniques. The present COVID-19 epidemic has pushed distance electronic learning (DEL) to the forefront of education at all levels, including medical institutions. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to observe how late-stage medical students felt about DEL, which was put in place during the recent COVID-19 shutdown in Jordan. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, cross-sectional, web-based, questionnaire-based research study during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown between March 15 and May 1, 2020. During this period, all medical schools in Jordan shifted to DEL. RESULTS: A total of 380 students responded to a request to fill out the questionnaire, of which 256 completed the questionnaire. The data analysis showed that 43.6% (n=112) of respondents had no DEL experience, and 53.1% (n=136)of respondents perceived the DEL method as user-friendly. On the other hand, 64.1% (n=164) of students strongly believed that DEL cannot substitute traditional clinical teaching. There was a significant positive correlation between the perception of user-friendliness and the clarity of the images and texts used. Moreover, there was a strong positive correlation between the perception of sound audibility and confidence in applying knowledge gained through DEL to clinical practice. CONCLUSIONS: DEL is a necessary and important tool in modern medical education, but it should be used as an auxiliary approach in the clinical setting since it cannot replace conventional personal instruction.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to develop and verify the effects of a web-based physical healthcare education program for community mental health case managers during the time of COVID-19. Six modules of mental health case management physical health education program were developed and provided using the EdWith education platform, which enables real-time streaming, lecture participant management and whether participants have watched the video and watch time. A total of 51 community mental health case managers participated in the study. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 software. Participants of the physical healthcare education program testified increased performance in, as well as enhanced attitudes toward physical healthcare. Their confidence in physical healthcare increased significantly from that of the individuals in the control group. The web-based educational program for mental health case managers in physical healthcare may be beneficial to improving the physical health of clients with chronic mental illness.

OBJECTIVE: Teaching procedural skills via digital platforms is challenging. There is a paucity of literature on the feasibility of implementing an online asynchronous web-based learning (WBL) module for endotracheal intubation in Emergency Medicine. Learners completed a pre-test questionnaire prior to reviewing the module to assess their current knowledge. After completion of the online module, another assessment on airway management competency was completed. The purpose of our pilot study was to determine the feasibility of implementing an online airway module and investigate knowledge acquisition among learners who completed it. Additionally, we compared the relationship between pre-module confidence and knowledge between various training levels of those who completed the module. METHODS: The study was IRB exempt. We conducted a quasi-experimental pre- and post-test study, where learners took a multiple-choice question-based test before watching content module, and after completion of modules, they went on to complete post-test questions. All responses were collected using Google survey and the data were collected over a period of 6 months. We performed descriptive statistics for the pre- and post-module. Frequency distribution was used for data summarization and chi-square test was used to assess the difference between variables. RESULTS: We received 366 responses in the pre-test module and 105 in post-test module. Responses were summarized into 5 broad categories which assessed knowledge about airway technique, anatomical landmarks, formulas for selecting blade size, tube size, depth of tube, and case-based scenarios. All questions showed a higher percentage of correct answers in the post-assessment compared to the pre-assessment. CONCLUSION: The results demonstrated that this WBL airway module resulted in significant knowledge acquisition, as well as increased confidence when approaching airway management. The study demonstrated that a WBL airway module is a feasible method of asynchronous education for healthcare providers in all levels of training.

BACKGROUND: Online learning platforms enable students to access their lessons anywhere and at any time, gain knowledge continuously, and become lifelong learners. This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of a web-based normal birth learning support platform, and to investigate nurse-midwife students' self-directed learning and attitudes towards online learning. METHODS: This study was performed using a sequential explanatory mixed methods design, with a total of 190 nurse-midwife students who voluntarily agreed to study normal birth on the web-based learning support platform. After the web-based learning, 36 students participated in focus groups to share their experience. Knowledge data were analysed using repeated measures analysis of variance, and interview data were analysed thematically. RESULTS: Normal birth knowledge results indicated a positive significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores. Compared with the post-test scores, no difference was found 2 weeks after the web-based learning. However, 4 weeks after the web-based learning, test scores decreased slightly, but the difference was only marginally significant compared with the scores obtained immediately post-test and 2 weeks later. Four main themes emerged from the qualitative data collection: (1) being challenging and flexible; (2) increasing confidence and positive attitudes; (3) having an interesting web-based support design; and (4) enhancing responsibility, self-directed learning and self-regulation. KEY CONCLUSION: Learning about normal birth on the web-based learning support platform can improve nurse-midwife students' self-discipline and self-directed learning, leading to sustainable knowledge and personal development. This was particularly significant and full of implications for learning and practice during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Acquired insights about web-based learning processes can be applied in other situations to further develop nursing and midwifery instruction, enhancing the learners' ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practice and provide effective care for women during childbirth.

BACKGROUND: Despite guidelines recommending the use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) in certain patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D), they are not being prescribed for many of these patients. Web-based continuing medical education (CME) patient simulations have been used to identify clinicians' practice gaps and improve clinical decision-making as measured within a simulation, but the impact of this format on real-world treatment has not been researched. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a simulation-based CME intervention on real-world use of GLP-1 RAs by endocrinologists and primary care physicians. METHODS: Two evaluation phases of the CME simulation were conducted: phase I, the CME simulation phase, was a paired, pre-post study of 435 physician learners in the United States; and phase II, the real-world phase, was a retrospective, matched case-control study of 157 of the 435 physicians who had claims data available for the study period. RESULTS: Phase I CME results showed a 29 percentage point increase in correct decisions from pre- to postfeedback (178/435, 40.9% to 304/435, 69.9%; P<.001) in selecting treatment that addresses both glycemic control and cardiovascular event protection. Phase II results showed that 39 of 157 (24.8%) physicians in the intervention group increased use of GLP-1 RAs, compared to 20 of 157 (12.7%) in the comparison group. Being in the intervention group predicted GLP-1 RA use after education (odds ratio 4.49; 95% CI 1.45-13.97; P=.001). CONCLUSIONS: A web-based CME simulation focused on secondary prevention of cardiovascular events in a patient with T2D was associated with increased use of evidence-based treatment selection in the real world.

BACKGROUND: Supporting patients to live well by optimizing behavior is a core tenet of primary health care. General practitioners and practice nurses experience barriers in providing behavior change interventions to patients for lifestyle behaviors, including low self-efficacy in their ability to enact change. Web-based learning technologies are readily available for general practitioners and practice nurses; however, opportunities to upskill in behavior change are still limited. Understanding what influences general practitioners' and practice nurses' adoption of web-based learning is crucial to enhancing the quality and impact of behavior change interventions in primary health care. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore general practitioners' and practice nurses' perceptions regarding web-based learning to support patients with behavior change. METHODS: A qualitative, cross-sectional design was used involving web-based, semistructured interviews with general practitioners and practice nurses in Queensland, Australia. The interviews were recorded and transcribed using the built-in Microsoft Teams transcription software. Inductive coding was used to generate codes from the interview data for thematic analysis. RESULTS: In total, there were 11 participants in this study, including general practitioners (n=4) and practice nurses (n=7). Three themes emerged from the data analysis: (1) reflecting on the provider of the Healthy Lifestyles suite; (2) valuing the web-based learning content and presentation; and (3) experiencing barriers and facilitators to using the Healthy Lifestyles suite. CONCLUSIONS: Provider reputation, awareness of availability, resources, content quality, usability, cost, and time influence adoption of web-based learning. Perceived quality is associated with culturally tailored information, resources, a balance of information and interactivity, plain language, user-friendly navigation, appealing visual presentation, communication examples, and simple models. Free web-based learning that features progress saving and module lengths of less than 2 hours alleviate perceived time and cost barriers. Learning providers may benefit by including these features in their future behavior change web-based learning for general practitioners and practice nurses.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Many health professions faculty members lack training on fundamental lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) health topics. Faculty development is needed to address knowledge gaps, improve teaching, and prepare students to competently care for the growing LGBTQ+ population. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a program evaluation of the massive open online course Teaching LGBTQ+ Health: A Faculty Development Course for Health Professions Educators from the Stanford School of Medicine. Our goal was to understand participant demographics, impact, and ongoing maintenance needs to inform decisions about updating the course. METHODS: We evaluated the course for the period from March 27, 2021, to February 24, 2023, guided by the RE-AIM (Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance) framework. We assessed impact using participation numbers, evidence of learning, and likelihood of practice change. Data included participant demographics, performance on a pre- and postcourse quiz, open-text entries throughout the course, continuing medical education (CME) credits awarded, and CME course evaluations. We analyzed demographics using descriptive statistics and pre- and postcourse quiz scores using a paired 2-tailed t test. We conducted a qualitative thematic analysis of open-text responses to prompts within the course and CME evaluation questions. RESULTS: Results were reported using the 5 framework domains. Regarding Reach, 1782 learners participated in the course, and 1516 (85.07%) accessed it through a main course website. Of the different types of participants, most were physicians (423/1516, 27.9%) and from outside the sponsoring institution and target audience (1452/1516, 95.78%). Regarding Effectiveness, the median change in test scores for the 38.1% (679/1782) of participants who completed both the pre- and postcourse tests was 3 out of 10 points, or a 30% improvement (P<.001). Themes identified from CME evaluations included LGBTQ+ health as a distinct domain, inclusivity in practices, and teaching LGBTQ+ health strategies. A minority of participants (237/1782, 13.3%) earned CME credits. Regarding Adoption, themes identified among responses to prompts in the course included LGBTQ+ health concepts and instructional strategies. Most participants strongly agreed with numerous positive statements about the course content, presentation, and likelihood of practice change. Regarding Implementation, the course cost US $57,000 to build and was intramurally funded through grants and subsidies. The course faculty spent an estimated 600 hours on the project, and educational technologists spent another 712 hours. Regarding Maintenance, much of the course is evergreen, and ongoing oversight and quality assurance require minimal faculty time. New content will likely include modules on transgender health and gender-affirming care. CONCLUSIONS: Teaching LGBTQ+ Health improved participants' knowledge of fundamental queer health topics. Overall participation has been modest to date. Most participants indicated an intention to change clinical or teaching practices. Maintenance costs are minimal. ABSTRACT

Recognizing that traditional textbooks on need-driven health technology innovation were increasingly misaligned with the needs of today's undergraduate biomedical engineering students and the faculty who teach them, we initiated an effort to develop new learning materials for this audience. To guide our efforts, we conducted literature searches on best practices in the development of online content and engaging digital learners (primarily Gen-Z). We further held a series of discussions with biomedical engineering students and instructors at universities across the United States. This input led us to the development of a set of modular, online, multimedia learning materials specifically designed for the new generation of undergraduate learners. In this article, we present the key decisions that helped shape the project. We also share the results of feedback surveys and focus groups that shed light on how the materials have been preliminarily received. Finally, we reflect on challenges, opportunities, and lessons from this project that may be helpful to other initiatives focused on the creation of multimedia content for the digital generation.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: To explore and describe nurse educators' suggestions regarding a digital educational resource addressing quality in placement studies for first-year student nurses in nursing homes. DESIGN: A qualitative, explorative, and descriptive research design. METHODS: Focus group interviews with eight nurse educators and individual interviews with six nurse educators. The interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim; subsequently, data were analysed in lines with content analysis as described by Graneheim and Lundman. RESULTS: The analysis revealed three main categories: 'Suggestions for a digital educational resource to strengthen and support nurse educators' role in follow-up students', 'Suggestions for a digital educational resource to complement and support interaction between stakeholders in placement', and 'Suggestions for a digital educational resource to facilitate student nurses' learning processes'. The categories were captured by the overarching theme, 'A digital educational resource facilitating interaction between stakeholders and students' learning processes. CONCLUSION: This study revealed nurse educators' suggestions regarding design elements, content, and use of a digital educational resource addressing placement studies for first-year student nurses' in nursing homes. Implications for the profession and/or patient care: Nurse educators should be involved in designing, developing, and implementing digital educational resources aiming to support student learning in nursing education placement studies. IMPACT: This study explored nurse educators' suggestions for a digital educational resource. They suggested a digital educational resource to strengthen and support their role, support interaction between stakeholders, and facilitate student nurses' learning processes. Further, they suggested a digital educational resource to be used as a supplement rather than as a replacement for nurse educators' physical presence in placements. REPORTING METHOD: The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research reporting guidelines were used. No Patient or Public Contribution.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Digital education has expanded since the COVID-19 pandemic began. A substantial amount of recent data on how students learn has become available for learning analytics (LA). LA denotes the "measurement, collection, analysis, and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimizing learning and the environments in which it occurs." OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to examine the use of LA in health care professions education and propose a framework for the LA life cycle. METHODS: We performed a comprehensive literature search of 10 databases: MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, ERIC, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, CINAHL, ICTP, Scopus, and IEEE Explore. In total, 6 reviewers worked in pairs and performed title, abstract, and full-text screening. We resolved disagreements on study selection by consensus and discussion with other reviewers. We included papers if they met the following criteria: papers on health care professions education, papers on digital education, and papers that collected LA data from any type of digital education platform. RESULTS: We retrieved 1238 papers, of which 65 met the inclusion criteria. From those papers, we extracted some typical characteristics of the LA process and proposed a framework for the LA life cycle, including digital education content creation, data collection, data analytics, and the purposes of LA. Assignment materials were the most popular type of digital education content (47/65, 72%), whereas the most commonly collected data types were the number of connections to the learning materials (53/65, 82%). Descriptive statistics was mostly used in data analytics in 89% (58/65) of studies. Finally, among the purposes for LA, understanding learners' interactions with the digital education platform was cited most often in 86% (56/65) of papers and understanding the relationship between interactions and student performance was cited in 63% (41/65) of papers. Far less common were the purposes of optimizing learning: the provision of at-risk intervention, feedback, and adaptive learning was found in 11, 5, and 3 papers, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: We identified gaps for each of the 4 components of the LA life cycle, with the lack of an iterative approach while designing courses for health care professions being the most prevalent. We identified only 1 instance in which the authors used knowledge from a previous course to improve the next course. Only 2 studies reported that LA was used to detect at-risk students during the course's run, compared with the overwhelming majority of other studies in which data analysis was performed only after the course was completed.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of web-based biology learning environment in improving academic performance via a meta-analysis. In looking for the studies on web-based biology learning environment, several keyword patterns from the abstracts (e.g., Pattern 1: web-based learning and biology education) were recruited in well-known databases (e.g., ERIC, EBSCO, Springer Link). Finally, 22 papers were apparent for the current meta-analysis examining the effect of web-based biology learning environment on academic performance. All statistical data from the studies were initially inserted into an Excel sheet and then imported into comprehensive meta-analysis (CMA) statistics software to calculate Hedges' g values. The overall effect-size of web-based biology learning environment pointed to a medium effect. Also, it was found that the educational level and type of experimental design, as moderator variables, did not positively affect the students' academic performance along with web-based biology learning environment. In light of the findings, it can be concluded that web-based biology learning environment is somewhat effective at improving the students' academic performance. The current study recommends that further studies should be undertaken to deepen the implementation processes of the studies with extreme values and explore what makes them unique.
