ABSTRACT

Brycon falcatus is one of the most highly consumed species of fish within the region in the Teles Pires basin, and has great commercial importance in sport and professional artisanal fishing. The objective of this study was to analyze the presence and concentration of total mercury (THg) in the muscle, liver and gills of B. falcatus, and calculate the risk to human health of THg contamination from ingestion of the fish. THg concentrations were similar in the liver (0.076 mg kg-1) and muscle (0.052 mg kg-1), and higher than in the gills (0.009 mg kg-1). The levels of HgT present in B. falcatus tissues did not influence weight gain and nutritional status. Based on the condition factor, weight and length ratio and hepatosomatic index, it seems that the concentrations of THg did not influence the health and well-being of B. falcatus collected in the Teles Pires River basin. THg concentrations in the muscle of B. falcatus are below the limit recommended by the World Health Organization for people who consume until 250 g of fish per week. The risk of deleterious effects on human health may exist if there is a greater consumption of B. falcatus such as 340 g/day, that is the mean of fish consumption by indigenous and riverine.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Specimens of Brazilian silverside (Atherinella brasiliensis, n=9672) with a length range of 1.5 to 14.2 cm were captured in the intertidal areas of the Estuarine Complex of Paranaguá, Brazil, between August 2010 and July 2011. The species' weight-length relationship was represented by the equation W=0.00533 L3.136 with a slightly positive allometry (b>3) and could be divided into two growth stanzas: W = W1 + W2; Stanza 1: W1= SW. (0.005239 L3.152); Stanza 2: W2= (1 - SW). (0.000699 L3.913); Switch-Function: SW = [1 + e1.204 (L - 11.66)]-1. The breakpoint between the first and second stanza (11.66 cm) matches published values for the estimated size at first maturity of adult females. Frequency distributions indicate that the species is present in the shallow areas of the Estuarine Complex of Paranaguá during all phases of its ontogenetic development, with the recruitment of juveniles taking place between October and November. Modal displacement was monitored throughout 12 months. The von Bertalanffy growth model and longevity was estimated as follow: asymptotic length (L∞) of 17.5 cm, growth coefficient (K) of 0.89 (year-1) and longevity (A95) of 3.33 years. We present some considerations with regard to the general methodology for adjusting weight-length relationships.

ABSTRACT

The flood pulse is a key factor that drives the biota of large rivers with adjacent floodplains, but the direction and intensity of its effects are not uniform for all trophic guilds of fish. In this study, we tested the existence of intra- and inter-annual changes in the relative condition factors (kn) of three Curimatidae: Potamorhina altamazonica, Potamorhina latior, and Psectrogaster rutiloides. We used weight and length data from fish that were caught in eight floodplain lakes of the Rio Solimões. These data were from experimental fisheries during each season of the hydrological cycle: flooding, flood, drying, and dry from 2004, 2005, and 2006. In general, there are similar patterns of intra-annual changes for these three species, with the highest estimates of kn during high water conditions. The lowest values were observed during the drying and dry seasons of 2005, when an extreme drought occurred in the Amazon basin. Higher values were observed during the same seasons in the year post-drought. We hypothesized that these patterns would be explained by the biological characteristics of these species and the effects of intra-annual hydrological changes, mainly the flood pulse effect, and by inter-annual climatic events, which are determined by global climate phenomena.

ABSTRACT

This paper describes the weight-length relationships (WLRs) and Fulton's condition factors (K) of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) in purse seine fisheries from three cruises in the western and central Pacific Ocean (WCPO): August-September 2009 (AS09), November-December 2012 (ND12), and June-July 2013 (JJ13). The fork length and weight of a total of 1678 specimens were measured. The results showed that the fork length of more than 70% of specimens was below 60 cm (76% in AS09, 87% in ND12, and 73% in JJ13). The coefficient b in the combined sex group was 3.367, 3.300 and 3.234 in JJ13, AS09 and ND12, respectively. The b values of WLRs when fork length was >60 cm were significantly less than 3 (P = 0.062), but when fork length was <60 cm they were significantly greater than 3 (P = 0.028). The K value ranges of JJ13, AS09 and ND12 in different fork length groups were 1.3-1.84 (1.62 ± 0.18), 1.57-2.02 (1.86 ± 0.15), and 1.44-1.78 (0.65 ± 0.13), respectively. Moreover, K values in different fork length classes for each cruise had one turning point: 60-65 cm for JJ13; 60-65 cm for ND12; and 55-60 cm for AS09. The results of this study provide basic information on the WLRs and K values of skipjack tuna in different seasons and growth phases in the WCPO, which are useful for fishery biologists and fishery managers.

ABSTRACT

Fish is the main source of protein in the Amazon and fishing is one of the most important sources of income for the Amazonian population. Serrasalmus spilopleura is a species that have been increasingly consumed by riverside communities, although it is only occasionally commercialized at regional markets. Therefore, this work sought to generate information about the population biology of S. spilopleura captured in floodplain lakes, Jaitêua and São Lourenço, in Manacapuru, Amazonas State. The population parameters were estimated by analyzing the distribution of the length frequency with the help of the ELEFAN I routine of the FISAT II program. The weight/length relationship was estimated by linear regression, longevity by Taylor's method, rate of natural mortality by Taylor's and Pauly's methods, and growth type by a t-test (α = 0.05). 669 specimens of S. spilopleura were captured measuring between 7 and 22 centimeters. The estimated population parameterswere:k=0.34year-1,L 23.10 cm, t0 = 0, and A0.95 = 9 years. 7 cohorts were identified, Taylor M = 0.33 year-1 and Pauly M = 0.98 year-1. The weight/length relationship equation was Wt = 0.051320.Lt2.8727, and negatively allometric growth. The information on the population parameters of S. spilopleura could be used to provide evaluation models for this fishery resource.

ABSTRACT

Os valores calculados foram: T. albus L∞ = 24,68 cm, k = 0,86/ano, Ø´ = 2,71, A0,95 = 3,48 anos, Mp = 1,76/ano, Mt = 0,85/ano, Pt = 0,0398I Cp2,6303; T. angulatus L∞ = 26,78 cm, k = 0,77/ano, Ø´ = 2,74, A0,95 = 3,89 anos, Mp = 1,60/ano, Mt = 0,76/ano, Pt = 0,0294I Cp2,8599; T. auritus L∞ = 27,83 cm, k = 0,65/ano, Ø´ = 2,70, A0,95 = 4,68 anos Mp = 1,40/ano, Mt = 0,63/ano e Pt = 0,0542I Cp2,5094.

Among the different fish species that landed in the market and fairs stand out Triportheus albus, T. angulatus and T. auritus. Considering the reduction of some fish stocks in the region, both the quantity and the size of some species, the research proposes to determine the growth parameters, mortality and length-weight relation of these species in floodplain lakes, Manacapuru, AM. The parameters were estimated by analyzing the length frequency distribution with the help of the routine "scan of values of k" method ELEFAN I program FISAT II. The values for each species were: T. albus L∞ = 24.68 cm, k = 0.86/year, Ø '= 2.71, A0.95 = 3.48 years, Mp = 1.76/year, Mt = 0.85/year, Pt = 0.0398I Cp2.6303; T. angulatus L∞ = 26.78 cm, k = 0.77/year, Ø '= 2.74, A0.95 = 3.89 years, Mp = 1.60/year, Mt = 0.76/year, Pt = 0.0294 I Cp2.8599 and T. auritus L∞ = 27.83 cm, k = 0.65/year, Ø '= 2.70, A0.95 = 4.68 years, Mp = 1.40/year, Mt = 0.63/year and Pt = 0.0542I Cp2.5094. These species showed rapid growth, high mortality, low life expectancy and short life cycle. It is suggested the parameters population should be continuously monitored to be used as a tool in the stock analysis.
