ABSTRACT

Objective: To analyze the effectiveness of the "Xinjiang Model" for tuberculosis prevention and control in Kashgar Prefecture, Xinjiang, and to explore the determinants of the policy implementation effect. Methods: The registration data of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients in Kashgar Prefecture from 2012 to 2021 were collected to describe the temporal trend of registered incidence. A questionnaire survey was conducted among PTB patients registered and treated in the tuberculosis management information system in Zepu and Shache Counties from January 2022 to July 2023 to collect and analyze "Xinjiang model" determinants of effectiveness. Results: The PTB registered incidence in Kashgar Prefecture showed a significant increasing trend from 2012 to 2018 (APC=18.7%) and a significant decreasing trend from 2018-2021 (APC=-28.8%). Among the Kashgar Prefecture, compared with average registered incidence in 2012-2017, registered incidence in 2021 in Shufu, Maigaiti, and Zepu Counties had a greater decline rate of 58.68%, 57.16%, and 54.02%, respectively, while the registered incidence in 2021 in Shache County increased by 6.32%. According to the comprehensive analysis of the factors affecting the effect of policy implementation, the proportion of PTB patients in Zepu County whose health status has now significantly improved compared with that before treatment was significantly greater than that in Shache County (P<0.05); patients in Shache County were significantly less aware than those in Zepu County of how to take tuberculosis drugs, precautions, adverse reactions, and regular reviews during treatment; the factors that accounted for the greater proportion of heavy treatment burden in both Shache and Zepu Counties were discomfort caused by taking or injecting drugs, accounting for 12.8% and 8.7%, respectively. Conclusion: The "Xinjiang model" can effectively control the epidemic situation of tuberculosis in Kashgar, and the knowledge of tuberculosis treatment, adverse reactions to tuberculosis drugs, and treatment costs were the determinants of the effectiveness of policy implementation.

ABSTRACT

A new species, Astragalusliuaiminii Z. Z. Yang & Q. R. Liu (Fabaceae), is described and illustrated from Xinjiang Province, China. The new species is close to A.wenquanensis S. B. Ho, but differs from the latter by leaves having a single leaflet (vs. 3-5 leaflets), and inflorescences with 1-2 flowers (vs. inflorescences with 5-7 flowers). It is also similar to A.monophyllus Maxim in leaf shape, but differs by its calyx expanding to become saccate and totally enveloping the pod (vs. calyx tubular, and ruptured by pod after flowering).

ABSTRACT

Rapid evolution of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is the bottleneck for effective prevention and control of PRRS. Thus, understanding the prevalence and genetic background of PRRSV strains in swine-producing regions is important for disease prevention and control. However, there is only limited information about the epizootiological situation of PRRS in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. In this study, blood or lung tissue samples were collected from 1,411 PRRS-suspected weaned pigs from 9 pig farms in Changji, Shihezi, and Wujiaqu cities between 2020 and 2022. The samples were first tested by RT-quantitative PCR, yielding a PRRSV-2 positive rate of 53.6%. Subsequently, 36 PRRSV strains were isolated through initial adaptation in bone marrow-derived macrophages followed by propagation in grivet monkey Marc-145 cells. Furthermore, 28 PRRSV-positive samples and 20 cell-adapted viruses were selected for high-throughput sequencing (HTS) to obtain the entire PRRSV genome sequences. Phylogenetic analysis based on the nucleotide sequences of the ORF5 gene of the PRRSV strains identified in this study grouped into sub-lineages 1.8 and 8.7 the former being the dominant strain currently circulating in Xinjiang. However, the NSP2 proteins of the Xinjiang PRRSV strains shared the same deletion patterns as sub-lineage 1.8 prototype strain NADC30 with the exception of 4 strains carrying 2-3 additional amino acid deletions. Further analysis confirmed that recombination events had occurred in 27 of 37 PRRSVs obtained here with the parental strains belonging to sub-lineages 1.8 and 8.7, lineages 3 and 5, with the recombination events having occurred most frequently in the 5' and 3' termini of ORF1a and 5' terminus of ORF1b.

Xinjiang Brown cattle are a unique and widely distributed breed of dual-purpose cattle in the Xinjiang area of China, whose milk production performance differs from Holstein cattle. It has been known that variations in bacterial species of the gastrointestinal tract influence milk protein, fat, and lactose synthesis. However, the microbiota differences between Xinjiang Brown and Holstein cattle are less known. This study aims to compare the bacterial community composition of the rumen and feces of these two cattle breeds under the same dietary and management conditions. The 16s rRNA sequencing data and milk production of 18 Xinjiang Brown cows and 20 Holstein cows on the same farm were obtained for analysis. The results confirmed differences in milk production between Xinjiang Brown and Holstein cattle. Microbiota with different relative abundance between these two cattle breeds were identified, and their biological functions might be related to milk synthesis. This study increases the understanding of the differences in microbiota between Xinjiang Brown and Holstein cattle and might provide helpful information for microbiota composition optimization of these dairy cattle.

Introduction: Cryptosporidium spp. is a significant zoonotic parasite. The prevalence and infection characteristics of Cryptosporidium spp. in Bactrian camels in Yili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture have yet to be fully understood. Thus, the molecular epidemiology of cryptosporidiosis in camels was investigated in this region. Methods: A total of 1,455 fecal samples were collected from 6 counties in three regions (Altay, Tacheng, and Yili) in Yili Prefecture. Nested PCR targeting the small subunit ribosomal RNA (ssu rRNA) gene was used to identify the species or genotypes of Cryptosporidium infection in camels. For C. parvum positive samples, the subtypes were identified using the 60-kDa glycoprotein (gp60) gene. Results and discussion: The overall infection rate was 8.7% (126/1,455), ranging from 5.6% to 11.7% in different regions, and 4.2% to 15.8% in different counties. A significant difference was observed amongst the counties (p < 0.001). Three species were detected, namely C. andersoni (65.1%, 82/126), C. parvum (34.1%, 43/126), and C. occultus (0.8%, 1/126). Three C. parvum subtypes, If-like-A15G2 (n = 29), IIdA15G1 (n = 4), and IIdA19G1(n = 1) were detected, with If-like-A15G2 being the most prevalent subtype. Camels aged 3-12 months exhibited the highest infection rate (11.4%, 44/387), with no significant difference among age groups (p > 0.05). C. parvum was predominant in camels under 3 months, while C. andersoni prevailed in camels over 3 months. There was an extremely significant difference observed among seasons (p < 0.001), summer had the highest infection rates (16.9%, 61/360). This study collected nearly 1,500 samples and, for the first time, investigated Cryptosporidium spp. infection in camels based on different age groups and seasons. All three Cryptosporidiumspecies identified were zoonotic, posing a potential threat to human health and requiring close attention.

BACKGROUND: Delphinium L. represents a taxonomically intricate genus of significant phylogenetic and economic importance in Ranunculaceae. Despite the existence of few chloroplast genome datasets, a comprehensive understanding of genome structures and selective pressures within the genus remains unknown. Furthermore, several taxa in this genus are exclusively found in Xinjiang, China, a region renowned for its distribution and diversity of Chinese and Central Asian Delphinium species. Therefore, investigating the features of chloroplast genomes in this area will provide valuable insights into the evolutionary processes and phylogenetic relationships of the genus. RESULTS: In this study, the eight newly completed chloroplast genomes are examined, ranging in length from 153,979 bp to 154,284 bp. Alongside these, analysing six previously reported taxa re-annotated in Delphinium, 111 unique genes are identified across all samples. Genome structure, distributions of simple sequence repeats and short dispersed repeats, as well as gene content are similar among these Delphinium taxa. Nine hypervariable intergenic spacers and protein coding regions, including ndhF-trnL(TAG), rpl16-intron, rpl33, rps15, rps18, trnK(TTT)-trnQ(TTG), trnP(TGG)-psaJ, trnT(GGT)-psbD and ycf1, are identified among 13 perennial Delphinium. Selective pressure and codon usage bias of all the plastid genes are performed within 14 Delphinium taxa. Phylogenetic analysis based on 14 Delphinium plastomes, alongside two Aconitum (Ranunculaceae) species serving as outgroup taxa, reveals the monophyletic nature of Delphinium. Our findings further discern Delphinium into two distinct clades: perennial species (clade I) and annual species (clade II). In addition, compared with the nrDNA ITS topology, cytological data and morphological characters, D. mollifolium and D. maackianum showed potential involvement in hybridization or polyploidization processes. Excluding these two species, the perennial Delphinium (clade I) exhibits a stronger consistency with the morphology-based system that utilized seed morphology. CONCLUSION: This study represents the first comprehensive analysis of plastomic variations among Delphinium taxa, based on the examination of 14 complete plastomes. The chloroplast genome structure of Delphinium is similar to other angiosperms and possesses the typical quadripartite structure with the conserved genome arrangement and gene features. In addition, the variation of non-coding regions is larger than coding regions of the chloroplast genome. Through DNA sequence divergence across Delphinium plastomes and subsequent phylogenomic analyses ndhF-trnL(TAG) and ycf1 are identified as promising molecular markers. These highly variable loci held significant potential for future phylogenetic and phylogeographic studies on Delphinium. Our phylogenomic analyses based on the whole plastomes, concatenation of 132 unique intergenic spacer regions, concatenation of 77 unique protein-coding genes and nrDNA ITS, all support the monophyly of Delphinium and perennial taxa clusters together into one clade within this genus. These findings provide crucial data for systematic, phylogenomic and evolutionary research in the genus for future studies.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary function is very important for the healthy development of children and adolescents. However, fewer studies have been conducted on pulmonary function trends in children and adolescents in remote areas. The aim of this study was to estimate the forced vital capacity (FVC) trend and its relationship with body mass index (BMI) among young people in Xinjiang during 1985-2014 using data from seven successive national surveys. METHODS: A total of 19,449 Xinjiang children and adolescents aged 7-18 years were extracted from the Chinese National Survey on Students' Constitution and Health. Height, weight, and FVC were measured repeatedly in each survey. FVC comparisons between adjacent surveys by age and sex were conducted by nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis after Kolmogorov-Smirnov of normality. One-way ANOVA and least significant difference(LSD) method was used to compare differences in FVC levels of Xinjiang children and adolescents with different BMI. The relationship between BMI and FVC was investigated using a nonlinear regression model. RESULTS: The FVC levels of Xinjiang children and adolescents peaked in 2000, with overall FVC levels being 8.7% higher in 2000 than in 1985. Since then, a substantial decline occurred, contrasting to 2000, with FVC levels decreasing by 27% in 2014, which was still lower than that in 1985 by 20.73%. The proportion of overnutrition boys increased from 0.2% in 1985 to 22.1% in 2014, and girls from 0.5% in 1985 to 14.5% in 2014. An inverted U-shape association between FVC and BMI values was obtained for Xinjiang children and adolescents. CONCLUSIONS: Targeted measures should be carried out in schools to control BMI levels to ensure good lung function in children and adolescents in Xinjiang. Future studies should pay more attention to other factors affecting FVC, such as dietary behaviour, physical activity, and racial differences among children and adolescents.

Background: Stripe rust, caused by the fungus Puccinia striiformis f.sp. tritici (Pst), poses a significant threat to global wheat production. Objectives: This study aims to analyze the distribution of stripe rust resistance genes, characterize resistance phenotypes at the seedling stage of 137 spring and 149 winter wheat varieties in Xinjiang, China, and discern differences in resistance between spring and winter wheat varieties. Design: We used various Pst races (CYR23, CYR29, CYR31, CYR32, CYR33, CYR34) to characterize seedling resistance of spring and winter wheat varieties and to correlate resistance to the presence of wheat resistance genes (Yr5, Yr9, Yr10, Yr15, Yr17, Yr18, Yr26, Yr41, Yr80, Yr81) using molecular markers. Results: Among spring wheat varieties, 62, 60, 42, 26, 51, and 24 varieties exhibited resistance to CYR23, CYR29, CYR31, CYR32, CYR33, and CYR34, respectively, with four varieties resistant to all varieties. Among winter wheat varieties, 66, 32, 69, 26, 83, 40 varieties demonstrated resistance to CYR23, CYR29, CYR31, CYR32, CYR33, and CYR34, respectively, with four varieties resistant to all varieties. Molecular testing revealed that, in spring wheat, 2, 17, 21, 61, 10, 0, 10, 79, and 32 varieties carried Yr9, Yr10, Yr15, Yr17, Yr18, Yr26, Yr41, Yr80, and Yr81 genes, respectively. In winter wheat, 40, 20, 7, 143, 15, 1, 6, 38, and 54 varieties carried Yr9, Yr10, Yr15, Yr17, Yr18, Yr26, Yr41, Yr80, and Yr81 genes, respectively. Notably, winter wheat exhibited a significantly higher resistance frequency than spring wheat, particularly in the incidence of Yr9, Yr10, Yr17, Yr18, and multi-gene combinations. Conclusion: In summary, this study provides information on seedling stage resistance to stripe rust 286 Xinjiang wheat varieties, elucidates the distribution of resistance genes in this population, and offers a mechanistic basis for breeding durable resistance in wheat. varieties from Xinjiang.

Introduction: Xinjiang Brown cattle constitute the largest breed of cattle in Xinjiang. Therefore, it is crucial to establish a genomic evaluation system, especially for those with low levels of breed improvement. Methods: This study aimed to establish a cross breed joint reference population by analyzing the genetic structure of 485 Xinjiang Brown cattle and 2,633 Chinese Holstein cattle (Illumina GeneSeek GGP bovine 150 K chip). The Bayes method single-step genome-wide best linear unbiased prediction was used to conduct a genomic evaluation of the joint reference population for the milk traits of Xinjiang Brown cattle. The reference population of Chinese Holstein cattle was randomly divided into groups to construct the joint reference population. By comparing the prediction accuracy, estimation bias, and inflation coefficient of the validation population, the optimal number of joint reference populations was determined. Results and Discussion: The results indicated a distinct genetic structure difference between the two breeds of adult cows, and both breeds should be considered when constructing multi-breed joint reference and validation populations. The reliability range of genome prediction of milk traits in the joint reference population was 0.142-0.465. Initially, it was determined that the inclusion of 600 and 900 Chinese Holstein cattle in the joint reference population positively impacted the genomic prediction of Xinjiang Brown cattle to certain extent. It was feasible to incorporate the Chinese Holstein into Xinjiang Brown cattle population to form a joint reference population for multi-breed genomic evaluation. However, for different Xinjiang Brown cattle populations, a fixed number of Chinese Holstein cattle cannot be directly added during multi-breed genomic selection. Pre-evaluation analysis based on the genetic structure, kinship, and other factors of the current population is required to ensure the authenticity and reliability of genomic predictions and improve estimation accuracy.

ABSTRACT

Long-term coal mining could lead to a serious of geo-environmental problems. However, less comprehensive identification of factors controlling the groundwater dynamics were involved in previous studies. This study focused on 68 groundwater samples collected before and after mining activities, Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) combining with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) derived that the groundwater samples were classified into five clusters. Clusters 1-5 (C1-C5) represented the groundwater quality affected by different hydrochemical processes, mainly including mineral (carbonate and evaporite) dissolution and cation exchange, which were controlled by the hydrochemical environment at different stages of mining activities. Combining with the time-series data, the Extreme Gradient Boosting Decision Trees (XGBoost) derived that the mine water inflow (feature relative importance of 40.0%) and unit goaf area (feature relative importance of 29.2%) were dominant factors affecting the confined groundwater level, but had less or lagged impact on phreatic groundwater level. This was closely related to the height of the water flow fractured zone and hydraulic connection between aquifers. The results of this study on the coupled evolution of groundwater dynamics could enhance our understanding of the effects of mining on aquifer systems and contribute to the prevention of water hazards in the coalfields.

BACKGROUND: Hyalomma ticks are widely distributed in semi-arid zones in Northwest China. They have been reported to harbor a large number of zoonotic pathogens. METHODS: In this study, a total of 334 Hyalomma asiaticum ticks infesting domestic animals were collected from four locations in Xinjiang, Northwest China, and the bacterial agents in them were investigated. RESULTS: A putative novel Borrelia species was identified in ticks from all four locations, with an overall positive rate of 6.59%. Rickettsia sibirica subsp. mongolitimonae, a human pathogen frequently reported in Europe, was detected for the second time in China. Two Ehrlichia species (Ehrlichia minasensis and Ehrlichia sp.) were identified. Furthermore, two Anaplasma species were characterized in this study: Candidatus Anaplasma camelii and Anaplasma sp. closely related to Candidatus Anaplasma boleense. It is the first report of Candidatus Anaplasma camelii in China. CONCLUSIONS: Six bacterial agents were reported in this study, many of which are possible or validated pathogens for humans and animals. The presence of these bacterial agents may suggest a potential risk for One Health in this area.

ABSTRACT

To study the influence of multi-factors, such as long sunshine, sand erosion, and so on, in southern Xinjiang, we selected two kinds of composite insulators for the transmission lines in southern Xinjiang to study the aging characteristics of the umbrella skirt surface. The results of scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) show that the surface roughness of the umbrella skirt is high and there are a large number of micron inorganic particles. The skirt has the characteristics of low C/O element ratio and high Al element content. The results of thermogravimetric analysis and micro infrared test show that the aging depth of the Myli Line skirt after 19 years of operation is 160~190 µm and that of Yuhe Line 1 after 14 years of operation is greater than 180 µm. The plasma discharge method was used to simulate the corona discharge in the actual operation to accelerate the aging of the surface of the umbrella skirt and the hydrophobic recovery of the umbrella skirt was investigated. The results show that the temperature has a great influence on the surface hydrophobic recovery performance after plasma treatment. These results may provide some theoretical guidance and technical support for the selection, operation, and maintenance of composite insulators in Xinjiang.

ABSTRACT

Objective: China is among the 30 countries with a high burden of tuberculosis (TB) worldwide, and TB remains a public health concern. Kashgar Prefecture in the southern Xinjiang Autonomous Region is considered as one of the highest TB burden regions in China. However, molecular epidemiological studies of Kashgar are lacking. Methods: A population-based retrospective study was conducted using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to determine the characteristics of drug resistance and the transmission patterns. Results: A total of 1,668 isolates collected in 2020 were classified into lineages 2 (46.0%), 3 (27.5%), and 4 (26.5%). The drug resistance rates revealed by WGS showed that the top three drugs in terms of the resistance rate were isoniazid (7.4%, 124/1,668), streptomycin (6.0%, 100/1,668), and rifampicin (3.3%, 55/1,668). The rate of rifampicin resistance was 1.8% (23/1,290) in the new cases and 9.4% (32/340) in the previously treated cases. Known resistance mutations were detected more frequently in lineage 2 strains than in lineage 3 or 4 strains, respectively: 18.6% vs. 8.7 or 9%, P < 0.001. The estimated proportion of recent transmissions was 25.9% (432/1,668). Multivariate logistic analyses indicated that sex, age, occupation, lineage, and drug resistance were the risk factors for recent transmission. Despite the low rate of drug resistance, drug-resistant strains had a higher risk of recent transmission than the susceptible strains (adjusted odds ratio, 1.414; 95% CI, 1.023-1.954; P = 0.036). Among all patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB), 78.4% (171/218) were attributed to the transmission of DR-TB strains. Conclusion: Our results suggest that drug-resistant strains are more transmissible than susceptible strains and that transmission is the major driving force of the current DR-TB epidemic in Kashgar.

Xinjiang brown cattle are highly resistant to disease and tolerant of roughage feeding. The identification of genes regulating mastitis resistance in Xinjiang brown cattle is a novel means of genetic improvement. In this study, the blood levels of IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α, and TGF-ß in Xinjiang brown cattle with high and low somatic cell counts (SCCs) were investigated, showing that cytokine levels were higher in cattle with high SCCs. The peripheral blood transcriptomic profiles of healthy and mastitis-affected cattle were constructed by RNA-seq. Differential expression analysis identified 1632 differentially expressed mRNAs (DE-mRNAs), 1757 differentially expressed lncRNAs (DE-lncRNAs), and 23 differentially expressed circRNAs (DE-circRNAs), which were found to be enriched in key pathways such as PI3K/Akt, focal adhesion, and ECM-receptor interactions. Finally, ceRNA interaction networks were constructed using the differentially expressed genes and ceRNAs. It was found that keynote genes or mRNAs were also enriched in pathways such as PI3K-Akt, cholinergic synapses, cell adhesion molecules, ion binding, cytokine receptor activity, and peptide receptor activity, suggesting that the key genes and ncRNAs in the network may play an important role in the regulation of bovine mastitis.

Objectives: Human echinococcosis remains an important public health problem. The aim of this study was to analyze the prevalence and spatial distribution characteristics of human echinococcosis cases in southern Xinjiang, China from 2005 to 2021. Methods: Human echinococcosis cases were collected from the National Infectious Disease Reporting System. Joinpoint regression analysis was performed to explore the trends. Spatial autocorrelation, hot spot analysis, as well as spatial-temporal clustering analysis were conducted to confirm the distribution and risk factors. Results: A total of 4580 cases were reported in southern Xinjiang during 2005-2021, with a mean annual incidence of 2.56/100,000. Echinococcosis incidence showed an increasing trend from 2005 to 2017 (APC = 17.939, 95%CI: 13.985 to 22.029) and a decreasing trend from 2017 to 2021 (APC = -18.769, 95%CI: 28.157 to -8.154). Echinococcosis cases had a positive spatial autocorrelation in 2005-2021 (Moran's I = 0.19, P < 0.05). The disease hotspots were located in the east and west in these areas, then returned to the east clusters, including Hejing, Heshuo, Wuqia, Atushi, Aheqi, and Yanqi Hui Autonomous County. Meanwhile, spatial-temporal analysis identified the first cluster comprised of five counties (cities): Yanqi Hui Autonomous County, Korla City, Bohu County, Hejing County, and Heshuo County. And secondary clusters 1-3 are predominantly in Wushi County, Aheqi County, Keping County, Atushi City, Wuqia County and Cele County. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that echinococcosis is still an important zoonotic parasitic disease in southern Xinjiang, yet it showed a certain degree of spatial clustering. It is crucial to implement comprehensive prevention and control measures to effectively combat the epidemic of echinococcosis.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the prevalence and risk factors for astigmatism in 7-19-year-old students in Xinjiang, China. METHODS: A school-based, cross-sectional study was conducted on students who underwent refraction examination in Xinjiang, China, between May and December 2019. The prevalence of astigmatism was determined. Astigmatism was defined as cylinder power (C) ≤-0.75 D, undefined astigmatism as ≤-1.50 D, and high astigmatism as C ≤-3.00 D. Astigmatism types were: against-the-rule astigmatism (maximum refraction of the main meridian in 180° ± 30°), with-the-rule astigmatism (maximum refraction of the main meridian at 90°±30°), and oblique astigmatism (all other cases). RESULTS: Of the 71,838 students examined (51.0% boys, 7 - 19 years old), 25,945 (36.1%, 95%CI: 35.52-36.68%) had astigmatism and 1267 (1.8%, 95%CI: 1.07-2.53%) had high astigmatism. The prevalence of astigmatism was greater in Han individuals (39.6%) compared with the Hui (34.0%), Kazakh (34.0%), Kyrgyz (32.1%), and Uyghur (26.4%) populations. Among the 25,945 students with astigmatism, 19,947 had with-the-rule astigmatism (76.9%), 3405 had against-the-rule astigmatism (13.1%), and 2593 had oblique astigmatism (10.0%). Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that ethnicity (Han individuals more susceptible), male gender, age, and refractive errors (myopia and hyperopia) were independently associated with astigmatism, high astigmatism, and with-the-rule astigmatism (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of astigmatism among children and adolescents in Xinjiang was 36.1%, including 1.8% of high astigmatism. In this population, astigmatism was mainly of the with-the-rule astigmatism type (76.9%). Han ethnicity, male gender, and myopia or hyperopia were independently associated with a high risk of astigmatism.

Background: With the rapid advancement of the One Health approach, the transmission of human infectious diseases is generally related to environmental and animal health. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been largely impacted by environmental factors regionally and globally and has significantly disrupted human society, especially in low-income regions that border many countries. However, few research studies have explored the impact of environmental factors on disease transmission in these regions. Methods: We used the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region as the study area to investigate the impact of environmental factors on COVID-19 variation using a dynamic disease model. Given the special control and prevention strategies against COVID-19 in Xinjiang, the focus was on social and environmental factors, including population mobility, quarantine rates, and return rates. The model performance was evaluated using the statistical metrics of correlation coefficient (CC), normalized absolute error (NAE), root mean square error (RMSE), and distance between the simulation and observation (DISO) indices. Scenario analyses of COVID-19 in Xinjiang encompassed three aspects: different population mobilities, quarantine rates, and return rates. Results: The results suggest that the established dynamic disease model can accurately simulate and predict COVID-19 variations with high accuracy. This model had a CC value of 0.96 and a DISO value of less than 0.35. According to the scenario analysis results, population mobilities have a large impact on COVID-19 variations, with quarantine rates having a stronger impact than return rates. Conclusion: These results provide scientific insight into the control and prevention of COVID-19 in Xinjiang, considering the influence of social and environmental factors on COVID-19 variation. The control and prevention strategies for COVID-19 examined in this study may also be useful for the control of other infectious diseases, especially in low-income regions that are bordered by many countries.

Introduction: This paper examines the association between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and the risk of metabolic syndrome (MS) and its components among Uygur adults in Kashi, Xinjiang. Methods: The study used the multi-stage random cluster sampling method to investigate the adult residents of Uighu aged over 18 years old in one county and one township/street of three cities in Kashi between May and June 2021. All dietary data collected were analyzed for energy and nutrient intake with a nutritional analysis software, followed by a calculation of DII. Logistic regression was used to estimate the association between DII and the risks of MS and its components. Results: The maximum DII value across our 1,193 respondents was 4.570 to 4.058, with an average value of 0.256. When we analyzed the DII as a continuous variable, we determined the anti-inflammatory diet has been identified as a mitigating factor for metabolic syndrome (OR = 0.586, 95% CI = 0.395-0.870), obesity (OR = 0.594, 95% CI = 0.395-0.870), elevated fasting glucose levels (OR = 0.422, 95% CI = 0.267-0.668), and hypertension (OR = 0.698, 95% CI = 0.488-0.996). When the model was adjusted by sex, age, and occupation, we found a significant correlation between high- and low-density lipoproteinemia and DII (OR = 1.55, 95% CI = 1.040-2.323). The present study identified four distinct dietary patterns among the population under investigation. There was a linear trend in the incidence of MS and hypertension across low, middle, and high levels of fruits and milk dietary pattern model (p = 0.027; p = 0.033), within this dietary pattern may serve as protective factors against MS and hypertension, suggesting that fruits and milk within this dietary pattern may serve as protective factors against MS and hypertension. And the linear trend in the incidence of elevated fasting glucose and obesity across the low, medium, and high scores of meet and eggs dietary pattern (p = 0.006; p < 0.001), suggest that a diet rich in meat may potentially contribute to an increased risk of developing elevated fasting glucose levels and obesity. An observed linear trend in the incidence rate of high fasting blood glucose across low, moderate, and high scores of dried fruits and nuts dietary pattern (p = 0.014), indicating that increased consumption of nuts acted as a protective factor against elevated fasting blood glucose levels and contributed to their reduction. Discussion: The dietary inflammation index was integrated with the findings from the study on the dietary patterns of the sampled population, revealing that an anti-inflammatory diet demonstrated a protective effect against metabolic syndrome, obesity, high fasting blood glucose, and hypertension in this specific population. laying the foundation for further research.

BACKGROUND: Research on the gut microbiota has emerged as a new direction for understanding pathophysiologic changes in diseases associated with aging, such as sarcopenia. Several studies have shown that there are differences in the gut microbiota between individuals with sarcopenia and without sarcopenia. However, these differences are not consistent across regions and ethnic groups, and additional research is needed. METHODS: In this study, we collected fresh fecal samples from 31 Uyghur individuals with sarcopenia and 31 healthy controls. We used 16S rRNA sequencing to obtain fecal base sequences and analyzed the diversity, composition and function of the gut microbiota. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in alpha diversity between the sarcopenia group and the healthy control group (P > 0.05). There was a significant difference in beta diversity between the groups (P < 0.05). In the sarcopenia group, the abundances of Alloprevotella, un_f_Prevotellaceae, Anaerovibrio, Prevotellaceae_NK3B31_group, Mitsuokella, Prevotella and Allisonella were lower than those in the heathy control group, and the abundances of Flavobacteriales, Flavobacteriaceae, Catenibacterium, Romboutsia, Erysipelotrichaceae_UCG-003, GCA-900066575, Lachnospiraceae_FCS020_group, and un_f_Flavobacteriaceae were higher than those in the heathy control group. Linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) revealed that the microbial species in the control group that were significantly different from those in the sarcopenia group were concentrated in the genus Alloprevotella, while the species in the sarcopenia group were concentrated in the genus Catenibacterium. Functional prediction analysis revealed that D-alanine, glycine, serine, and threonine metabolism and transcription machinery, among others, were enriched in the sarcopenia group, which indicated that metabolic pathways related to amino acid metabolism and nutrient transport may be regulated to varying degrees in the pathophysiological context of sarcopenia. CONCLUSIONS: There were significant differences in the composition and function of the gut microbiota between Xinjiang Uyghur sarcopenia individuals and healthy individuals. These findings might aid in the development of probiotics or microbial-based therapies for sarcopenia in Uyhur individuals.
