ABSTRACT

Microbial communities inhabiting the gut have the ability to influence physiological processes contributing to livestock production and performance. Livestock enterprises rely on animal production traits such as growth performance for profit. Previous studies have shown that gut microbiota are correlated to growth performance and could even influence it. The aim of this study was to characterise the faecal microbial profiles of Angus steers with high and low ADG at both weaning and yearling stages by profiling 16S rRNA gene sequences from rectal faecal samples. When microbial profiles were compared in terms of relative abundances, LEfSe analysis, alpha diversity metrics, and beta diversity, at the weaning stage, few significant differences were found between the high and low ADG groups. However, at yearling stage, microbial profiles significantly differed between the high and low ADG groups. The relative abundances of eight phyla and six genera significantly differed between the two groups. Alpha diversity metrics showed a significant decrease (p = 0.001) in species richness in the high ADG group. Similarly, beta diversity analysis showed that samples clustered clearly according to high and low ADG groups at yearling stage, indicating that phylogenetic similarity between the two ADG groups was significantly reduced (p = 0.005).

ABSTRACT

This comparative study aimed to evaluate genetic and environmental factors' effects on the growth traits of lambs in Dorper and Red Maasai (RedM) sheep breeds. The data analyzed contained the following measurements: birth weight (Bwt), weaning weight (Wwt), yearling weight (Ywt), birth type (single or twins), and details on each lamb's dam (dam ID and age) and sire. Except for the RedM, whose birth weight decreased with time, both breeds generally showed an increase in other growth weights across the study period, with yearly variations affecting both breeds. Additionally, analysis by a linear mixed model with restricted maximum likelihood (REML) showed that only breed as a factor significantly (p < 0.05) influenced birth weight; breed, sex, and birth type all significantly (p < 0.05) influenced weaning weight, whereas season, sex, and dam age significantly (p < 0.05) influenced yearling weight. The RedM breed outperformed the Dorper breed in post-weaning growth rate, demonstrating early resilience and adaptation to local environmental factors independent of maternal influence. Breed and non-genetic factors play a vital role in the growth of lambs, and the results of this study offer an opportunity for improved farm management under an extensive production system and selection for the conservation of the indigenous Red Maasai breed.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Body weight is an important economic trait for a goat, which greatly affects animal growth and survival. The purpose of this study was to identify genes associated with birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), and yearling weight (YW). Materials and Methods: In this study, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of BW, WW, and YW was determined using the GGP_Goat_70K single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chip in 1,920 Inner Mongolia cashmere goats. Results: We discovered that 21 SNPs were significantly associated with BW on the genome-wide levels. These SNPs were located in 10 genes, e.g., Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase 3 (MAPK3), LIM domain binding 2 (LDB2), and low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1B (LRP1B), which may be related to muscle growth and development in Inner Mongolia Cashmere goats. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis revealed that these genes were significantly enriched in the regulation of actin cytoskeleton and phospholipase D signaling pathway etc. Conclusion: In summary, this study will improve the marker-assisted breeding of Inner Mongolia cashmere goats and the molecular mechanisms of important economic traits.

ABSTRACT

The weighted single-step genomic best linear unbiased prediction (GBLUP) method has been proposed to exploit information from genotyped and non-genotyped relatives, allowing the use of weights for single-nucleotide polymorphism in the construction of the genomic relationship matrix. The purpose of this study was to investigate the accuracy of genetic prediction using the following single-trait best linear unbiased prediction methods in Hanwoo beef cattle: pedigree-based (PBLUP), un-weighted (ssGBLUP), and weighted (WssGBLUP) single-step genomic methods. We also assessed the impact of alternative single and window weighting methods according to their effects on the traits of interest. The data was comprised of 15,796 phenotypic records for yearling weight (YW) and 5622 records for carcass traits (backfat thickness: BFT, carcass weight: CW, eye muscle area: EMA, and marbling score: MS). Also, the genotypic data included 6616 animals for YW and 5134 for carcass traits on the 43,950 single-nucleotide polymorphisms. The ssGBLUP showed significant improvement in genomic prediction accuracy for carcass traits (71%) and yearling weight (99%) compared to the pedigree-based method. The window weighting procedures performed better than single SNP weighting for CW (11%), EMA (11%), MS (3%), and YW (6%), whereas no gain in accuracy was observed for BFT. Besides, the improvement in accuracy between window WssGBLUP and the un-weighted method was low for BFT and MS, while for CW, EMA, and YW resulted in a gain of 22%, 15%, and 20%, respectively, which indicates the presence of relevant quantitative trait loci for these traits. These findings indicate that WssGBLUP is an appropriate method for traits with a large quantitative trait loci effect.

The objectives of the present study were to investigate the influence of yearling weight on the occurrence of early pregnancy and to determine differences between precocious and non-precocious heifers in terms of pre- and postnatal calf mortality, calf weight and height, mature cow weight, and stayability of the cow in the herd. Data from 26 977 females of a Nelore herd that participated in the breeding season between 1986 and 2004 were analyzed. The influence of yearling weight on sexual precocity and differences between precocious and non-precocious heifers in pre- and postnatal calf mortality and stayability were analyzed using the GENMOD procedure of the SAS program. Differences in the growth traits between precocious and non-precocious animals were estimated by contrast analysis. Three groups were analyzed for postnatal mortality: first calving of the heifers, calves born from the third calving and all offspring of the cow. In order to have a standardized calving to conception period for all females (precocious and non-precocious), calves born from the second calving were not included in the analysis. This was necessary because the first calving to conception period (days open) of precocious heifers was longer than for non-precocious due to farm reproductive management. No differences in postnatal mortality rates, from the third calving, were observed between the two groups of heifers studied. Analysis of all offspring of the dams showed a 9% higher probability of death of calves born to precocious heifers compared with calves born to non-precocious heifers. With respect to stayability, precocious heifers presented 33% greater odds to remain in the herd until 5 and 6 years of age and 28% greater odds to remain in the herd until 7 years when compared with non-precocious heifers. Precocious heifers weaned calves (205 days) significantly heavier than non-precocious ones, 1.410 and 0.797 kg considering the weaning weights of all offspring and of the third calving, respectively. With respect to sexual precocity, the results suggest that the probability of heifers to become pregnant at 16 months of age increases with increasing weight. However, heifers weighing more than 240 kg present practically the same pregnancy probability. Nevertheless, exposure of heifers during the early breeding season is recommended for beef cattle herds raised in tropical regions in view of the numerous benefits demonstrated here.

ABSTRACT

Foram estimados os coeficientes de herdabilidade e a mudança genética para peso à desmama (PD), peso ao sobreano (PS), ganho de peso do nascimento à desmama (GND), ganho de peso da desmama ao sobreano (GDS), perímetro escrotal (PE) e idade ao primeiro parto (IPP) em animais da raça Nelore. Foram utilizados dados de 128.148 animais nascidos entre 1984 e 2006. Os componentes de variância foram estimados pelo método da máxima verossimilhança restrita, e os valores genéticos foram preditos por modelos mistos aplicando-se modelo animal bicaracterística, incluindo peso à desmama em todas as análises. As tendências genéticas foram estimadas pela regressão dos valores genéticos sobre o ano de nascimento dos animais. Os coeficientes de herdabilidade do efeito direto estimados foram de 0,23 (0,07) (PD); 0,24 (0,02) (PS); 0,21 (0,01) (GND); 0,23 (0,01) (GDS); 0,46 (0,02) (PE) e 0,15 (0,01) (IPP). As tendências genéticas diretas estimadas foram de 0,171 (0,01); 0,219 (0,02); 0,186 (0,03) e 0,224 (0,02) kg/ano para PD, PS, GND e GDS, respectivamente, o que representa incrementos de 0,10; 0,08; 0,13 e 0,22 por cento nas médias das mesmas características ao ano, respectivamente. Para o PE e a IPP no período de 1984 a 1995, as tendências genéticas foram nulas, com valores de 0,011 (0,03) cm/ano e -0,003 (0,06) dias/ano, respectivamente. No segundo período considerado (1996 a 2006), as tendências genéticas para PE e IPP foram de 0,069 (0,01) cm/ano e -3,024 (0,04) dias/ano, respectivamente, indicando melhorias consideráveis em tais características. Esses valores sugerem que características produtivas e reprodutivas, quando utilizadas como critério de seleção, proporcionam progresso genético no rebanho, sendo indicadas para seleção de animais da raça Nelore.


The heritability coefficients and genetic trends for weaning weight (WW), post-yearling weight (PW), average gains from birth to weaning (GBW), average gains from weaning to post-yearling (GWP), scrotal circumference (SC), and age at first calving (AFC) were estimated in Nelore cattle. Variance components and heritability coefficients were estimated by restricted maximum likelihood and breeding values were predicted fitting bivariate animal models, always including weaning weight. Data from 128,148 animals born from 1984 to 2006 were used. Genetic trends for each trait were estimated by regression of breeding values on the animal birth year. Heritability estimates for direct effect were 0.23 (0.07) for WW; 0.24 (0.02) for PW; 0.21 (0.01) for GBW; 0.23 (0.01) for GWP; 0.46 (0.02) for SC; and 0.15 (0.01) for AFC. The direct genetic trends were 0.171 (0.01); 0.219 (0.02); 0.186 (0.03); and 0.224 (0.02) kg per year, for WW, PW, GBW, and GWP, respectively, corresponding to increases of 0.10, 0.08, 0.13, and 0.22 percent in the means of the same traits per year, respectively. In the first period (1984 to 1995), the SC and AFC genetic trends were null, with values of 0.011 (0.03) cm/year and -0.003 (0.06) days/year, respectively. Moreover, in the other period (1996 to 2006), the genetic trends of SC and AFC were 0.069 (0.01) cm/year and -3.024 (0.04) days/year, respectively. These values suggest that productive and reproductive traits, when used as selection criteria, result in genetic progress of the herd. Thus, they are indicated for selection of Nelore cattle.

ABSTRACT

Com o objetivo de testar modelos genéticos alternativos ao aditivo-dominante em populações multirraciais, foram utilizadas informações do peso ao sobreano (PS) de 35.931 novilhos, filhos de 752 touros e 30.535 vacas das raças Aberdeen Angus (A) e Nelore (N) e de diversos grupos genéticos possíveis por meio do cruzamento entre elas. Foram testados cinco diferentes modelos (M) genéticos: o M1 continha o efeito genético fixo aditivo direto (AD), heterozigótico direto (HD), epistático direto (ED) e aditivo-conjunto direto (ACD); o M2, igual ao M1, menos o efeito ACD; o M3, igual ao M1, menos o efeito ED; o M4, igual ao M1, menos os efeitos ED e ACD; e o M5, igual ao M1, menos os efeitos HD, ED e ACD. Os modelos foram submetidos a três métodos de análise diferentes: método dos quadrados mínimos (MQM), regressão de cumeeira (RC) e máxima verossimilhança restrita (REML). O método de RC produziu estimativas de coeficientes com magnitudes e sinais explicados biologicamente. As estimativas dos efeitos, das (co)variâncias, dos parâmetros e dos valores genéticos diferiram entre os modelos, indicando a importância da correta escolha do modelo de análise, devendo-se ter conhecimento prévio do fenômeno estudado e sua interpretação biológica e sempre preceder à escolha de um modelo de análise genética multirracial o estudo da relação existente entre as variáveis independentes. Importantes efeitos adicionais ao efeito AD foram acrescentados pelas inclusões dos efeitos HD e ED aos modelos de análise. A notação matemática dos efeitos ACD, aplicada atualmente na literatura e testada neste estudo, não foi capaz de explicar a complementaridade entre raças como esperado, havendo problemas com casos de multicolinearidade entre os efeitos estudados.


In order to evaluate alternative genetic models to the additive dominant model, weights at yearling (PS) of 35,931 animals, sired by 752 bulls and 30,535 cows of Aberdeen Angus (A) and Nellore (N) breeds and the genetic groups from their crosses were used. Five different genetic models (M) were tested: M1, containing the direct additive fixed genetic effect (DA), heterozygote direct (HD), epystatic direct (ED), and direct joint additive direct (DJA); M2 was equal to M1, excluding DJA effect; M3 was equal to M1, excluding ED effect; M4 was equal M1, excluding ED and ACD effects, and M5 was equal to M1, excluding HD, ED, and DJA effects. The models were analyzed by different methods: Least Square Means Method (MQM), Ridge Regression Method (RC), and Restricted Maximum Likelihood Method (REML). Estimated coefficients by RC showed magnitude and sign which were biologically explained. The estimates of the covariances, parameters, and genetic values varied among the models, indicating the importance of the correct choice of the model for analysis, being necessary a previous knowledge of the studied phenomenon and its biological interpretation. Besides, it should always be considered the relationship between the independent variables before choosing a multibreed genetic analysis model. Important additional effects to the DA effect were considered by the inclusion of the HD and ED effects to the models for analysis. The DJA math notation, currently used in the literature and tested in the present study, was not able to explain the breed complementarity, due to the multi colinearity among the studied effects.
