ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) are essential assessments for evaluating the clinical competencies of medical students. The COVID-19 pandemic caused a significant disruption in medical education, prompting institutions to adopt virtual formats for academic activities. This study analyzes the feasibility, satisfaction, and experiences of pediatric board candidates and faculty during virtual or electronic OSCE (e-OSCE) training sessions using Zoom video communication (Zoom Video Communications, Inc., San Jose, USA). METHODS: This is a post-event survey assessing the perceptions of faculty and candidates and the perceived advantages and obstacles of e-OSCE. RESULTS: A total of 142 participants were invited to complete a post-event survey, and 105 (73.9%) completed the survey. There was equal gender representation. More than half of the participants were examiners. The overall satisfaction with the virtual e-OSCE was high, with a mean score of 4.7±0.67 out of 5. Most participants were likely to recommend e-OSCE to a friend or colleague (mean score 8.84±1.51/10). More faculty (66.1%) than candidates (40.8%) preferred e-OSCE (P=0.006). CONCLUSION: Transitioning to virtual OSCE training during the pandemic proved feasible, with high satisfaction rates. Further research on virtual training for OSCE in medical education is recommended to optimize its implementation and outcomes.

ABSTRACT

The compound eye is a natural multi-aperture optical imaging system. In this paper, a continuous optical zoom compound eye imaging system based on Alvarez lenses is proposed. The main optical imaging part of the proposed system consists of a curved Alvarez lens array (CALA) and two Alvarez lenses. The movement of the CALA and two Alvarez lenses perpendicular to the optical axis is realized by the actuation of the dielectric elastomers (DEs). By adjusting the focal length of the CALA and the two Alvarez lenses, the proposed system can realize continuous zoom imaging without any mechanical movement vertically to the optical axis. The experimental results show that the paraxial magnification of the target can range from ∼0.30× to ∼0.9×. The overall dimensions of the optical imaging part are 54 mm × 36 mm ×60 mm (L × W × H). The response time is 180 ms. The imaging resolution can reach up to 50 lp/mm during the optical zoom process. The proposed continuous optical zoom compound eye imaging system has potential applications in various fields, including large field of view imaging, medical diagnostics, machine vision, and distance detection.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Distal medium vessel occlusion (DVO) thrombectomy has been shown to be efficacious with safety profiles comparable to large vessel occlusion (LVO) thrombectomy. A novel, highly-trackable, bevel-tipped Zoom 35 catheter can be used as an aspiration catheter for DVO thrombectomy. METHODS: This is a retrospective, single-arm, multi-institutional observational study evaluating the efficacy and safety of aspiration thrombectomy for DVO using the Zoom 35 catheter. Patient demographics, presenting and discharge NIHSS, primary and rescue thrombectomy, site of occlusion, TICI score, and intracranial hemorrhage were chart abstracted. Descriptive statistics were used to evaluate the efficacy and safety of thrombectomy. RESULTS: Fourteen patients (mean age 66.64 ± 13.75 years) were included. The mean NIHSS at presentation was 10.79 ± 5.48, and the mean ASPECTS was 9.00 ± 0.89. Nine patients (64.3%) received tPA. Primary occlusion location was M3 in nine cases (64.3%), M2/M3 junction in two cases (14.3%), A2 in one case (7.1%), A3 in one case (7.1%), and P1 in one case (7.1%). TICI scores were 3 in seven cases (50.0%), 2C in three cases (21.4%), and 2B in four cases (28.6%). There was one postoperative SAH (7.1%) and one asymptomatic ICH (7.1%). Mean discharge NIHSS was 3.38 ± 4.44, with a mean decrease of 7.31 from presentation (p < 0.0001, t-test). CONCLUSION: Zoom 35 beveled-tip aspiration microcatheters are highly trackable and associated with improved radiographic and clinical outcomes for the treatment of DVO with a good safety profile.

ABSTRACT

This article demonstrates how digital information and communication technologies (ICTs) (Zoom/WhatsApp) unexpectedly and counterintuitively proved to be valuable tools for community-engaged health research when, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, they were integrated into a research study testing a peer support group intervention with female immigrants from Mexico. Because of pandemic restrictions, we changed the study protocol to hold meetings remotely via Zoom rather than in person as originally planned. Because we recognized that this would lack some opportunities for participants to interact and develop relationships, we created a WhatsApp chat for each group. Despite challenges for participants to use ICTs and participant-stated preference for in-person meetings, the results demonstrated that participants overwhelmingly endorsed these technologies as promoting access, participation, engagement, and satisfaction. Zoom/WhatsApp created a valuable environment both as a method for conducting research with this population, but also as part of the intervention for immigrant women to support and learn from each other. ICT adaptations have now permanently changed the way we conduct community-engaged health research.

ABSTRACT

This study examines the attitudes and learning effectiveness of undergraduate students at the faculty of management who studied synchronous e-Learning courses using Zoom system. The attitudes were divided into three categories: attitude toward e-Learning, attitude toward the Zoom system and attitude toward the flexibility of this learning. Five variables of learning effectiveness were measured: skills, understanding, benefits, involvement and motivation. Additionally, the prior experience of the students with e-Learning and the degree of open camera use during the lessons and their effect on attitudes and effectiveness were examined. The study consisted of 120 students using a quantitative questionnaire for data collection. The main results of this study provide strong evidence that prior experience in e-Learning has a significant effect on all of the students' attitudes and their overall satisfaction with the learning method. The previous experience of the students was also found to influence the understanding variable as part of learning effectiveness. Additionally, the degree of open camera use in the synchronous e-Learning lessons was found to affect the students' skills, benefits and involvement during the learning process.

INTRODUCTION: Zoom reperfusion system (Imperative Care, CA) has proven to be promising for use in adult mechanical thrombectomies (MTs) but has not been described in pediatrics. We present two cases of a 14-year-old with acute right middle cerebral artery (MCA) syndrome and a 10-year old with acute left MCA syndrome who underwent MT using Zoom Reperfusion System safely with TICI 2B and TICI 3 recanalization, respectively. METHOD: Case report and literature review. RESULTS: A 14-year-old healthy boy with right supraclinoid internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusion (case 1) and a 10-year-old boy with left hypoplastic heart syndrome and left ICA terminus occlusion (case 2) were taken for MT after receiving alteplase at our institution. Through femoral access, an 8-French sheath was introduced into the right femoral artery through which a Zoom 88 catheter was introduced and parked at the right petrous ICA segment in case 1 and left ophthalmic ICA segment in case 2. Angiogram demonstrated complete ICA occlusion just past the ophthalmic artery origin in case 1 and at the ICA terminus in case 2. Zoom system (88 and 71) was then navigated to the face of clot with vacuum manifold engaged with the clot. TICI 2B (with the help of Trevo stent retriever [Stryker]) and TICI 3 recanalization were achieved in cases 1 and 2, respectively. CONCLUSION: The use of Zoom reperfusion system could potentially be feasible for use in pediatric age group. Larger pediatric patient population is needed to establish its safety.

Aim: To determine the effect of simulation-based Zoom learning (SBZL) on perceived capabilities and clinical decision-making skills among undergraduate nursing students and to explore experiences of the instructors and students participating in SBZL. Background: Nursing is a practice profession and students acquire clinical decision-making skills in clinical settings. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted conventional clinical learning activities. In this study, the outcomes of implementing SBZL in an undergraduate programme to support students' clinical learning were examined. Design: A mixed methods design was employed. Methods: This study recruited 195 final-year students to participate in the SBZL programme, which was developed based on the NLN Jeffries Simulation Theory to guide its design, implementation and evaluation. Case scenarios were developed and simulated through Zoom. Students' perceived capabilities, perceptions of the learning environment and clinical decision-making skills were assessed before and after SBZL. A historical control group of 226 previous final year students who had received a clinical practicum was included for comparison. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 instructors and 19 students to explore their experiences of participating in SBZL. Results: A total of 102 students completed the post-SBZL questionnaire. An increase in perceived creative thinking (mean difference = 0.24, p < 0.001) was observed post-SBZL. After SBZL, the perceptions of the learning environment were significantly improved. However, the SBZL group demonstrated lower perceived problem-solving capability than the control group (mean difference = 0.14, p = 0.007). Clinical decision-making was significantly improved in the SBZL group than in the control group (p < 0.001). Both the instructors and students reported positive experiences with SBZL, and highlighted challenges and factors for improving its implementation. Conclusions: SBZL showed improvement in perceived creative thinking, perceptions of the learning environment and clinical decision-making. This innovative teaching and learning method can be valuable for nursing education in various regions to prepare students for real-life roles. The ability to see or hide one's own image is a typical feature of videoconferencing platforms. Previous research, informed primarily by self-reported data, has suggested that enabling self-view mode is associated with videoconferencing fatigue, particularly for women. Our goal in this study is to test this assumption by gathering neurophysiological evidence. We conducted an experiment using electroencephalography (EEG) with 32 volunteers (16 men and 16 women), who each participated in a live video meeting with the self-view mode both on and off. Our findings confirm the effects of self-view on fatigue, with significantly greater alpha activity when self-view was on than when it was off. Alpha activity did not change significantly across a 20-minute session, and was not significantly different for men or women. Thus, our study does not replicate previous findings that women experience greater videoconferencing fatigue because of the increased self-awareness generated when viewing themselves on a screen. We discuss why our EEG findings may diverge from prior self-reported studies.

ABSTRACT

Metalenses are typically designed for a fixed focal length, restricting their functionality to static scenarios. Various methods have been introduced to achieve the zoom function in metalenses. These methods, however, have a very limited zoom range, or they require additional lenses to achieve direct imaging. Here, we demonstrate a zoom metalens based on axial movement that performs both the imaging and the zoom function. The key innovation is the use of a polynomial phase profile that mimics an aspheric lens, which allows an extended depth of focus, enabling a large zoom range. Experimental results show that this focal length variation, combined with the extended depth of focus, translates into an impressive zoom range of 11.9× while maintaining good imaging quality. We see applications for such a zoom metalens in surveillance cameras of drones or microrobots to reduce their weight and volume, thus enabling more flexible application scenarios.

Despite its positive impact on physical and mental well-being, adults may refrain from performing regular physical activity, due to inadequate time, accessibility, or funds. Yet remote platforms could overcome such obstacles and increase participation. This study evaluated the effectiveness of remote-synchronous group-Pilates classes compared to in-studio classes in healthy sedentary women. In a randomized controlled design, 40 women, aged 20-45, were assigned to a Zoom or studio group-Pilates training. The intervention included twice-weekly 45 min sessions over an eight-week period. Attendance (adherence) was recorded, and the participants completed physical motor tests (plank, curl-up, stork, push-up, and V-sit and reach), Profile of Mood State Surveys, and Nordic Musculoskeletal Pain Questionnaires. Evaluations were performed at baseline, mid-intervention (4 weeks), and post intervention (8 weeks). Adherence to training was high in the Zoom and studio groups (80% and 74%, respectively). Improvements in physical motor tests were seen in both groups following the Pilates interventions, thereby indicating the effectiveness of group-Pilates Zoom training. In conclusion, remote online physical activity such as Pilates offers a good alternative to in-studio trainings, as a means for improving physical fitness and promoting a healthy lifestyle in adults, by offering a more accessible and less timely alternative to in-studio physical activity programs.

ABSTRACT

Formation of a carotid free-floating thrombus (CFFT) is a rare and life-threatening condition without an optimal management plan. A 78-year-old woman with a history of prior right internal carotid artery (ICA) mechanical thrombectomy and antiplatelet noncompliance presented with transient ischemic attacks secondary to a recurrent CFFT in the right ICA. Given her symptoms and recurrent CFFT, endovascular mechanical thrombectomy was performed. A balloon guide-catheter (BGC) and a Zoom 88 distal access catheter were brought into the right distal common carotid artery and proximal ICA bulb, respectively. Three 0.021-inch microcatheters, each loaded with a unique stentriever, were navigated beyond the thrombus into the upper cervical ICA and deployed in a bouquet fashion. The BGC was inflated to achieve flow arrest, and the Zoom 88 aspiration catheter was tracked over the three bouquet stentrievers to ingest the thrombus. Follow-up angiography demonstrated recanalization of the proximal cervical ICA without evidence of residual thrombus. Twenty-four-hour postoperative computed tomography imaging did not reveal any evidence of new infarction. The patient was discharged home with an intact neurological examination, compliant on aspirin and apixaban. We demonstrate a novel technique utilizing a large-bore catheter with a triple stentriever "bouquet" to thrombectomize a CFFT.

Organ-specific PET scanners continues to draw interest for their high-resolution imaging capability that is unmatched by whole-body PET/computed tomography (CT) scanners. The virtual-pinhole PET concept offers new opportunities in PET system design, allowing one to mix and match detectors of different characteristics to achieve the highest performance such as high image resolution, high system sensitivity, and large imaging field-of-view. This novel approach delivers high-resolution PET images previously available only through organ-specific PET scanner while maintaining the imaging field-of-view of a clinical PET/CT scanner to see the entire body.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic social distancing forced a shift from Face-to-Face (F2F) to virtual work sessions, applying innovative digital tools. These tools have previously been neglected, mainly due to a conservative approach or prioritization. Consequently, their effectiveness was never tested in depth. While applying these innovative digital tools during the COVID-19 pandemic was clearly preferable to shutting down organizational activity, managers and workers recognized the advantages of these alternatives and tended to apply them in the post-COVID-19 period. However, in this post-pandemic period, which is free from social distancing limitations, a relatively full space of choices was introduced again, which raised the question whether these alternatives should be kept. Therefore, this study examines whether digital communication tools can adequately substitute F2F sessions in project management. We conducted an experiment with participants (n=269),askingthem to perform project-oriented tasks on four platforms: as individuals, in an F2F group meeting, on Zoom, or using WhatsApp. The results indicate that while an F2F meeting is more effective than individual work, Zoom and WhatsApp are not. These findings appear surprising and may contradict the concept of group empowerment. The use of digital sharing platforms did not affect the tasks' performances nor create synergy. This raises the issue of whether these digital means are here to stay, should be discarded, or must be upgraded.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed people's professional and private lives globally and has led to an increasing use of digital technologies, especially video conferencing systems (e.g. Zoom, Webex, Teams, Skype). Despite the possible advantages of these systems (e.g. savings in emissions by avoiding travelling), a negative phenomenon has been reported in science and practice: Videoconference Fatigue (VCF) (often synonymously referred to as Zoom Fatigue). This term describes the exhaustion and fatigue that results from the use of videoconferencing systems. In this article we report on an analysis of the academic literature, the aim of which is to document the current state of research on coping strategies. The analysis of coping strategies helps to better understand the phenomenon of VCF and to prevent or reduce fatigue and exhaustion. Furthermore, the results reported here are a basis for future work. Specifically, as of May 2022, we have identified 48 scientific articles on VCF, 37 of which also deal with coping strategies. We divide these strategies into organizational (e.g. taking breaks during and between meetings), personal (e.g. avoiding multitasking) and technological (e.g. use of the "together mode" in Teams). An important finding of our analysis is that with the exception of one paper, the effectiveness of the coping strategies has not yet been empirically examined and thus proven. This opens up enormous future research potential.

ABSTRACT

This paper proposes a two-dimensional precision level for real-time measurement using a zoom fast Fourier transform (zoom FFT)-based decoupling algorithm that was developed and integrated in an FPGA. This algorithm solves the contradiction between obtaining high resolution and obtaining high measurement speed, and achieves both high angle-resolution measurement and real-time measurement. The proposed level adopts a silicone-oil surface as the angle-sensitive interface and combines the principle of homodyne interference. By analyzing the frequency of the interference fringes, the angle variation can be determined. The zoom-FFT-based decoupling algorithm improves the system's frequency resolution of the interference fringes, thereby significantly enhancing the angle resolution. Furthermore, this algorithm improves the efficiency of angle decoupling, while the angle decoupling process can also be transplanted to the board to realize real-time measurement of the level. Finally, a prototype based on the level principle was tested to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The principle analysis and test results showed that the angle resolution of the prototype improved from 9 arcsec to about 0.1 arcsec using this angle-solution method. At the same time, the measurement repeatability of the prototype was approximately ±0.2 arcsec. In comparison with a commercial autocollimator, the angle measurement accuracy reached ±0.6 arcsec.

In the past, plant layouts were regarded as highly static structures. With increasing internal and external factors causing turbulence in operations, it has become more necessary for companies to adapt to new conditions in order to maintain optimal performance. One possible way for such an adaptation is the adjustment of the plant layout by rearranging the individual facilities within the plant. Since the information about the plant layout is considered as master data and changes have a considerable impact on interconnected processes in production, it is essential that this data remains accurate and up-to-date. This paper presents a novel approach to create a digital shadow of the plant layout, which allows the actual state of the physical layout to be continuously represented in virtual space. To capture the spatial positions and orientations of the individual facilities, a pan-tilt-zoom camera in combination with fiducial markers is used. With the help of a prototypically implemented system, the real plant layout was captured and converted into different data formats for further use in exemplary external software systems. This enabled the automatic updating of the plant layout for simulation, analysis and routing tasks in a case study and showed the benefits of using the proposed system for layout capturing in terms of accuracy and effort reduction.

ABSTRACT

MOTIVATION: Typical surgical microscopes used for fluorescence-based lymph node detection experience limitations such as weight and restricted adjustability of the integrated light emitting diode (LED) and camera. This restricts the capture of detailed images of specific regions within the lesion. RESEARCH GOAL: This study proposes a miniature observation robot design that offers adjustable working distance (WD) and rotational radius, along with zoom-in/zoom-out functionality. METHODS: A five-degree-of-freedom manipulator was designed, with the end effector incorporating an LED and concave lens to widen the beam width for comprehensive lesion illumination. Additionally, a long-pass filter was integrated into the camera system to enhance image resolution. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS: Experiments were conducted using a fluorescence-expressing phantom to evaluate the performance of the robot. Results demonstrated a captured image resolution of 9600 × 3240 pixels and a zoom-in/zoom-out capacity of up to 3.68 times. CONCLUSION: The proposed robot design is cost-effective and highly adjustable, enabling suitability for rapid and accurate detection of fresh lymph nodes during surgeries. The robot's capability to detect small lesions (<1 cm), as validated by phantom tests, holds promise for the detection of minute lymph nodes.

BACKGROUND: In response to the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, conventional recruitment approaches were halted, causing the suspension of numerous clinical trials. Previously, Facebook (Meta Platforms, Inc) has emerged as a promising tool for augmenting participant recruitment. While previous research has explored the use of Facebook for surveys and qualitative studies, its potential for recruiting participants into randomized controlled trials (RCTs) remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to comprehensively examine the effectiveness of using Facebook groups and pages to facilitate participant recruitment during the COVID-19 pandemic for an RCT on the effectiveness of a remote parenting program, 1-2-3 Magic, in families who have children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in the United Kingdom. METHODS: We disseminated 5 Facebook posts with an attached digital flyer across 4 prominent ADHD UK support groups and pages run by the National Attention Deficit Disorder Information and Support Services, reaching an audience of around 16,000 individuals over 2 months (January 7 to March 4, 2022). Eligibility criteria mandated participants to be parents or caregivers of a child with diagnosed ADHD aged 12 years or younger, be residing in the United Kingdom, have access to stable internet, and have a device with the Zoom (Zoom Video Communications) app. Participants were required to have never attended 1-2-3 Magic training previously. Prospective participants expressed their interest through Microsoft Forms (Microsoft Corporation). The trial aimed to recruit 84 parents. It is important to note that the term "parent" or "caregiver" in the RCT and in this study within a trial refers to anybody who has legal responsibility for the child. RESULTS: Overall, 478 individuals registered their interest through Microsoft Forms within the stipulated 2-month window. After the eligibility check, 135 participants were contacted for a baseline meeting through Zoom. The first 84 participants who attended a baseline meeting and returned a completed consent form were enrolled. Subsequently, another 16 participants were added, resulting in a final sample of 100 participants. This recruitment strategy incurred negligible expenses and demanded minimal human resources. The approach yielded favorable outcomes by efficiently attracting eligible participants in a condensed time frame, transcending geographical barriers throughout the United Kingdom, which would have been tedious to achieve through traditional recruitment methods. CONCLUSIONS: Our experience demonstrated that digital flyers posted in the targeted Facebook groups were a cost-effective and quick method for recruiting for an RCT, which opened during the COVID-19 pandemic when lockdown restrictions were in place in the United Kingdom. Trialists should consider this low-cost recruitment intervention for trials going forward, and in the case of a global pandemic, this novel recruitment method enabled the trial to continue where many have failed. Introduction: The Covid-19 pandemic caused a change in learning methods to online learning. Zoom fatigue is a problem that many students experience during online learning. Zoom fatigue has an impact on physical and psychological problems so that it disrupts the online learning process. Hardiness is needed by students in order to adapt to online learning. Aim: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between hardiness and zoom fatigue in nursing students at Universitas Padjadjaran. Methods: This study used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional study design. The sample technique used total sampling. Respondents were 480 nursing students at Universitas Padjadjaran. The research instrument used the Zoom Exhaustion & Fatigue Scale questionnaire and the Hardiness Instrument for the Online Learning. Results: This study shows that almost half of the respondents have a medium hardiness level category (45%) and a zoom level of medium fatigue category (46.67%). The results of the analysis show that there is a significant negative relationship between hardiness and zoom fatigue in nursing students at Universitas Padjadjaran. The higher the student's hardiness level, the lower the student's zoom fatigue level. High hardiness can increase focus during the learning process, increase student participation, and reduce stress and fatigue in students during online learning. Conclusion: Lecturers and students need to collaborate to improve the learning process and repeat mental health problems during online learning. This data forms the basis for university and school nurses in providing interventions for nursing students to reduce the problem of zoom fatigue.

ABSTRACT

Optical metasurfaces have been widely investigated for their versatile ability to manipulate wavefront and miniaturize traditional optical components into ultrathin planar devices. The integration of metasurfaces with multifunctionality and tunability has fundamentally transformed optics with unprecedented control over light propagation and manipulation. This study introduces a pioneering framework for the development of tunable metasurfaces with multifunctionality, and an example of a tunable metasurface of dual functionalities is proposed and numerically verified as one of the tunable meta-axicon for generating Bessel beams with a variable depth of focus (DOF) and a continuous-zoom metalens. Specifically, this design achieves dual-functional phase modulation by helicity-multiplexing from the combination of the geometric phase as well as the propagation phase and realizes tunability for both functionalities through rotational actuation between double metasurface layers. As a result, dual functionalities with continuous tunability of the proposed TiO2 metasurface are enabled independently for the left and right circularly polarized (LCP and RCP) incidences at 532 nm. Specifically, LCP light triggers the metasurface to function as a tunable axicon, generating non-diffracting Bessel beams with variable numerical apertures (NA) and DOFs. Conversely, the RCP incidence induces it to operate as a continuous-zoom metalens and generates variable spherical wavefront focusing on diverse focal lengths. This study not only initially implements the design of tunable meta-axicon, but also achieves the integration of such a tunable meta-axicon and continuous-zoom metalens within a single metasurface configuration. The proposed device could find potential applications in biological imaging, microscopic measurement, laser fabrication, optical manipulation, multi-plane imaging, depth estimation, optical data storage, etc.
