ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Aguas frescas are Mexican drinks that are typically made with water, sugar, and fruit. Aguas frescas may be a significant component of sugary drink intake among Mexican and Mexican American (MA) adults. However, it is unclear whether survey respondents report aguas frescas consumption when it is not specifically queried in standardized beverage frequency instruments. OBJECTIVES: This study examined the prevalence of aguas frescas consumption, the sociodemographic correlates of aguas frescas intake, and how specifically querying aguas frescas intake affects sugary drink estimates among Mexican and MA adults. METHODS: Cross-sectional, online surveys were conducted in 2021 with 5,377 Mexican and 3,073 MA adults as part of the International Food Policy Study. Past 7-day consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), sugary drinks, and aguas frescas was assessed along with relevant covariates. Weighted analyses included logistic and linear regression, including models with correlation structure. RESULTS: An estimated 61.7% of Mexican and 28.7% of MA adults consumed aguas frescas. In Mexico, consumption was associated with female sex, low education, perceiving oneself as having about the right weight, having good to excellent health, and consuming an unhealthy amount of sugary drinks. For MAs, intake was associated with being younger, speaking Spanish, and perceiving oneself as having underweight or about the right weight. Among Mexican adults who consumed aguas frescas but did not report them unless specifically queried, the volume of SSB intake was 67.9% higher for females and 64.3% higher for males when aguas frescas were included. Among MAs, SSB intake was 56.9% higher for females and 44.1% higher for males. Most participants (79.9-85.2%) remained in the same sugary drink tertiles when including versus excluding aguas frescas. CONCLUSIONS: Aguas frescas should be queried during beverage intake assessments, as they contribute a non-trivial amount of added sugars to the diets of many Mexican and MA adults.

ABSTRACT Fluorosis is a worldwide public health problem. One of the factors related to it is the type of water consumed, such as groundwater. High fluoride concentration in groundwater may be explained by contamination from local industries. Since fluoride and arsenic are the main pollutants of groundwater, some studies correlate groundwater consumption with high prevalence of fluorosis Aim The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review to determine whether children's risk of fluorosis is related to drinking groundwater Materials and Method The protocol for this systematic review was registered at the National Institute of Health Research Database (CRD42021227298). A comprehensive search was conducted to identify potentially relevant studies by exploring a range of electronic databases (Medline via PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Science Direct, Web of Science Core Collection, Medline via Ovid, Lilacs, Embase, and grey literature) Results A total 2189 articles were found. After reading titles and abstracts, 63 were selected for screening, and the final data was extracted from 15 articles Conclusion A relationship was identified between drinking fluoridated water from wells and the prevalence of fluorosis in individuals up to 18 years old. This is the first study to assess the issue systematically worldwide.


RESUMEN La fluorosis es un problema de salud pública a nivel mundial y el tipo de agua consumida es uno de los factores relacionados con ella, como el consumo de aguas subterráneas. La alta concentración de fluoruro en estas aguas puede justificarse por la contaminación por industrias locales y las características del suelo, donde algunos estudios correlacionan el consumo de aguas subterráneas con una alta prevalencia de fluorosis, ya que el fluoruro, junto con el arsénico, se consideran los principales contaminantes de estas aguas Objetivo El objetivo es realizar una revisión sistemática que relacione el riesgo de fluorosis en niños expuestos al consumo de agua procedente de pozos Materiales y Método El protocolo de esta revisión sistemática fue registrado en el National Institute of Health Research Database (CRD42021227298). Se realizó una búsqueda bibliográfica de estudios primarios explorando diversas bases de datos electrónicas (Medline vía PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Science Direct, Web of Science Core Collection, Medline vía Ovid, Lilacs, Embase y literatura gris) Resultados Se encontraron 2189 artículos, tras la lectura de títulos y resúmenes se seleccionaron 63 referencias para examinar y, finalmente, se extrajeron los datos de 15 artículos Conclusiones Se identificó una relación entre el consumo de agua fluorada de pozo y la prevalencia de fluorosis en individuos de hasta 18 años, siendo este estudio el primero en evaluarlo sistemáticamente a nivel mundial.

El alarmante incremento de la resistencia bacteriana a los antibióticos a nivel global ha dilucidado otras fuentes diferentes al hospital y la comunidad, donde el agua ha cobrado gran importancia. El ambiente acuático constituye la fuente y el hábitat natural de un gran número de microorganismos, incluyendo bacterias resistentes a antibióticos; así mismo, se considera uno de los principales receptores de antimicrobianos, bacterias resistentes y genes de resistencia a antibióticos provenientes de las actividades humanas. La contaminación del agua con estos contaminantes emergentes tiene implicaciones serias para la salud humana, relacionadas con la diseminación de la resistencia bacteriana y la emergencia de nuevos mecanismos de resistencia. En esta revisión se brinda una descripción global del papel de los ambientes acuáticos en el problema de la resistencia bacteriana, las principales fuentes de contaminación, además del impacto para la salud pública. Ante este panorama, se establece la necesidad de abordar la problemática de la resistencia bacteriana desde la perspectiva de "una salud", donde a la vigilancia tradicional, enfocada a nivel humano y veterinario, se articule la vigilancia epidemiológica ambiental, principalmente basada en aguas residuales.


The alarming increase in bacterial resistance to antibiotics globally has diluted sources other than the hospital and community, where water has taken on great importance. The aquatic environment is the source and natural habitat of a large number of microorganisms, including antibiotic-resistant bacteria, as well as being considered one of the main receptors for antimicrobials, resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes from human activities. Contamination of water with these emerging contaminants has serious implications for human health related to the spread of bacterial resistance and the emergence of new resistance mechanisms. This review provides a global description of the role of aquatic environments in the problem of bacterial resistance, the main sources of contamination, as well as the impact on Public Health. In this context, the need arises to address the problem of bacterial resistance from the perspective of "one health", where traditional surveillance, focused at the human and veterinary level, is articulated with environmental epidemiological surveillance, mainly in wastewater.


O incremento alarmante da resistência bacteriana aos antibióticos no nível global tem revelado outras fontes diferentes do hospital e da comunidade, em que a água tem ganho grande importância. O ambiente aquático constitui a fonte e o hábitat natural de um grande número de microrganismos, incluindo bactérias resistentes a antibióticos; é considerado, também, um dos principais receptores de antimicrobianos, bactérias resistentes e genes de resistência a antibióticos provindos das atividades humanas. A poluição da água com esses poluentes emergentes tem sérias implicações para a saúde humana, relacionadas com a disseminação da resistência bacteriana e a emergência de novos mecanismos de resistência. Nesta revisão oferece-se uma descrição global do papel dos ambientes aquáticos na situação problemática da resistência bacteriana, as principais fontes de poluição, além do impacto para a saúde pública. Diante desse panorama, determina-se a necessidade de abordar a problemática da resistência bacteriana desde a perspectiva de "uma saúde" em que a vigilância tradicional, focada nos níveis humano e veterinário, esteja articulada com a vigilância epidemiológica ambiental, principalmente baseada em águas residuais.

ABSTRACT

La biodiversidad bacteriana en las aguas mineromedicinales y sus perfiles de resistencia a los antibióticos es un tema en desarrollo en Ecuador. El objetivo del trabajo fue conocer la microbiota bacteriana y la resistencia a los antibióticos en aguas del balneario “Termas de Santagua Chachimbiro”, Provincia de Imbabura-Ecuador. Se recolectaron 16 muestras de agua. El aislamiento de las colonias bacterianas se obtuvo por la técnica de filtración en membrana, utilizando diferentes medios de cultivos. La identificación se realizó de acuerdo con los esquemas propuestos por MacFaddin (2003), complementados con las pruebas de las galerías Microgen. El perfil de resistencia a los antibióticos se determinó por el método de difusión en placas de Kirby y Bauer (1966). Se aislaron e identificaron 85 cepas bacterianas de las cuales el 61 % resultaron Gram negativas y 39 % Gram positivas. Las especies identificadas fueron Aeromonas caviae, Aeromonas eucrenophila, Aeromonas hydróphila, Aeromonas media, Aeromonas salmonicida, Aeromonas schubertii, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus mycoides, Bacillus spp, Burkholderia cepacia, Citrobacter freundii, Comamonas spp, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas putida, Pseudomonas stutzeri, Ralstonia pickettii, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus lugdenensis, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Staphylococcus spp, Staphylococcus warneri y Staphylococcus xylosus. En cuanto a la resistencia antimicrobiana la mayoría de las Gram negativas fueron resistentes a las penicilinas y cefalosporinas. Las Gram positivas a la oxacilina y penicilinas. El 66,67 % resultaron multirresistentes a más de tres antibióticos. El balneario “Termas de Santagua de Chachimbiro” presenta diversidad de especies bacteriana y la presencia de resistomas ambientales.(AU)


Bacterial biodiversity in mineral medicinal waters and the antibiotic resistance profiles, is a developing topic in Ecuador. The objective of the work was to know the bacterial microbiota and its resistance profiles to antibiotics of the mineral medicinal waters of the Santagua Chachimbiro spa, located in the Province of Imbabura-Ecuador. 16 water samples were collected. The isolation of the bacterial species was carried out by the membrane filtration technique, using different types of culture media. The identification was carried out according to the schemes proposed by MacFaddin (2003), complemented with the tests of the Microgen galleries. The antibiotic resistance profile was determined by the Kirby and Bauer (1966) plate diffusion method. 85 strains were isolate of which 61% were Gram negative and 39% Gram positive. The main species identified were Aeromonas caviae, Aeromonas eucrenophila, Aeromonas hydrophila, Aeromonas media, Aeromonas salmonicida, Aeromonas schubertii, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus mycoides, Bacillus spp, Burkholderia cepacia, Citrobacter freundii, Comamonas spp, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas fluorescenscens, Pseudomonas putida, Pseudomonas stutzeri, Ralstonia pickettii, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus lugdenensis, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Staphylococcus spp, Staphylococcus warneri and Staphylococcus xylosus. Regarding antimicrobial resistance, most of the Gram negative strains were resistant to penicillin and cephalosporins. Gram positive to oxacillin and penicillin 66,67% were multiresistant to more than three antibiotics. The “Termas de Santagua de Chachimbiro” spa presents a diversity of bacterial species and the presence of environmental resistomes.(AU)

ABSTRACT

La Estrategia de detección, vigilancia y control frente a la pandemia ha sido el principal marcodinámico que ha orientado las líneas de acción para el manejo de la situación desde febrerode 2020 hasta la actualidad, adaptándose a la evolución de la pandemia e intentando buscarun equilibrio entre los impactos asistencial, económico y social hasta que las coberturas vacu-nales, la inmunidad natural infección por y la evolución de las variantes han ido permitiendoun escenario más favorable. Sus principales componentes han sido: la definición y actuación con los casos y contactos es-trechos, la definición de ámbitos vulnerables, la detección de infección aguda mediante prue-bas diagnósticas, la definición de brotes, las actuaciones en ámbitos específicos, la vigilanciaepidemiológica proactiva a realizar, la evaluación mediante indicadores para la valoración delriesgo y definición del nivel de alerta, así como las medidas proporcionales a adoptar en sucaso. Estos componentes se van desarrollando en los diferentes artículos. En concreto, en este artículo se hace hincapié en la vigilancia del SARS CoV-2 en aguas resi-duales, en las medidas preventivas y en la comunicación a la población de su aplicación, en lacontextualización territorial y social de la pandemia mediante los informes de perfil COVID-19por Zona Básica de Salud (ZBS) y en la prevención y control mediante indicadores para lavaloración de riesgo y niveles de alerta de transmisión de COVID-19 y las medidas a adoptaren función del nivel de alerta.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Insights into declines in ecosystem resilience and their causes and effects can inform preemptive action to avoid ecosystem collapse and loss of biodiversity, ecosystem services, and human well-being. Empirical studies of ecosystem collapse are rare and hampered by ecosystem complexity, nonlinear and lagged responses, and interactions across scales. We investigated how an anthropogenic stressor could diminish ecosystem resilience to a recurring perturbation by altering a critical ecosystem driver. We studied groundwater-dependent, peat-accumulating, fire-prone wetlands known as upland swamps in southeastern Australia. We hypothesized that underground mining (stressor) reduces resilience of these wetlands to landscape fires (perturbation) by diminishing groundwater, a key ecosystem driver. We monitored soil moisture as an indicator of ecosystem resilience during and after underground mining. After landscape fire, we compared responses of multiple state variables representing ecosystem structure, composition, and function in swamps within the mining footprint with unmined reference swamps. Soil moisture declined without recovery in swamps with mine subsidence (i.e., undermined), but was maintained in reference swamps over 8 years (effect size 1.8). Relative to burned reference swamps, burned undermined swamps showed greater loss of peat via substrate combustion; reduced cover, height, and biomass of regenerating vegetation; reduced postfire plant species richness and abundance; altered plant species composition; increased mortality rates of woody plants; reduced postfire seedling recruitment; and extirpation of a hydrophilic animal. Undermined swamps therefore showed strong symptoms of postfire ecosystem collapse, whereas reference swamps regenerated vigorously. We found that an anthropogenic stressor diminished the resilience of an ecosystem to recurring perturbations, predisposing it to collapse. Avoidance of ecosystem collapse hinges on early diagnosis of mechanisms and preventative risk reduction. It may be possible to delay or ameliorate symptoms of collapse or to restore resilience, but the latter appears unlikely in our study system due to fundamental alteration of a critical ecosystem driver. Efectos de las interacciones entre los estresantes antropogénicos y las perturbaciones recurrentes sobre la resiliencia y el colapso de los ecosistemas.


La comprensión de la declinación en la resiliencia de los ecosistemas y sus causas y efectos puede orientar las acciones preventivas para evitar el colapso ecosistémico y la pérdida de biodiversidad, servicios ambientales y bienestar humano. Los estudios empíricos del colapso ecosistémico son escasos y se enfrentan a obstáculos como la complejidad del ecosistema, respuestas rezagadas y no lineales e interacciones entre las escalas. Investigamos cómo un estresante antropogénico podría reducir la resiliencia del ecosistema a una perturbación recurrente mediante la alteración de un causante importante. Estudiamos los humedales dependientes de aguas subterráneas que acumulan turbas y son propicios a incendios conocidos como pantanos de tierras altas en el sureste de Australia. Nuestra hipótesis fue que la minería subterránea (estresante) reduce la resiliencia de estos humedales a incendios (perturbación) al disminuir el agua subterránea, un causante clave para el ecosistema. Monitoreamos la humedad del suelo como un indicador de la resiliencia del ecosistema durante y después de la minería subterránea. Después de los incendios, comparamos la respuesta de múltiples variables de estado que representaban la estructura, composición y función del ecosistema en los pantanos dentro de la huella minera con los pantanos referenciales sin minería. La humedad del suelo declinó sin recuperación en los pantanos con hundimientos mineros (es decir, socavones) pero se mantuvo en los pantanos referenciales durante ocho años (tamaño del efecto: 1.8). En relación a los pantanos referenciales incendiados, los pantanos con socavones e incendios mostraron una mayor pérdida de turba mediante la combustión del sustrato; reducción en la cobertura, altura y regeneración de biomasa de la vegetación; reducción en la riqueza y abundancia de especies vegetales post incendio; alteraciones en la composición de especies vegetales; incremento en la mortalidad de las plantas leñosas; reducción en el reclutamiento post incendio de plántulas; y la extirpación de un animal hidrofílico. Por lo tanto, los pantanos con socavones mostraron síntomas fuertes de un colapso ecosistémico post incendio, mientras que los pantanos referenciales se regeneraron vigorosamente. Descubrimos que los estresantes antropogénicos redujeron la resiliencia de un ecosistema a perturbaciones recurrentes, lo que lo predispone al colapso. La eliminación de este colapso depende de un diagnóstico temprano de mecanismos y reducción del riesgo preventivo. Puede ser posible retardar o mitigar los síntomas del colapso o restaurar la resiliencia, aunque lo último parece ser improbable en nuestro sistema de estudio debido a la alteración fundamental de un causante importante del ecosistema.

Abstract Artificial impoundments are frequently built to mitigate the water scarcity in the drylands such as the Caatinga region in Brazil. The São Francisco Interbasin Water Transfer (SF-IWT) megaproject implemented many artificial reservoirs for that purpose. A checklist of fish species from the SF-IWT reservoirs is provided based on samples from eight years of monitoring. The collections were conducted semiannually at 28 reservoirs divided into three groups: the East Axis, North Axis, and Agreste Branch. The SF-IWT reservoirs presented a total of 47 species, 46 were recorded in the North Axis, 27 in the East Axis, and only seven in the Agreste Branch. Characids and cichlids represented most of the species. The three analyzed groups of reservoirs presented distinct communities and the reservoirs' age, richness and abundance were relevant variables responsible for fish composition. The SF-IWT reservoirs present a diverse and heterogeneous ichthyofauna, typical of lentic environments. The main colonizers of the SF-IWT reservoirs were fish from the São Francisco donor basin, invasive species anthropically released in those sites, and eventual species from the surrounding receiving basins. As the accumulation curves suggested, a continuous effort could reveal additional species, patterns in long-term colonization, and contribute to data on the reservoirs' future stabilization phase. Since invasive species were present in most reservoirs, along with donor-basin native species with potential to disperse to the receiving basins, a continuous and detailed monitoring is key for management planning and possible impacts assessment.


Resumo Barramentos artificiais são comumente construídos para mitigar a escassez hídrica em áreas semiáridas como a região da Caatinga brasileira. O Projeto de Integração do Rio São Francisco (PISF) com Bacias Hidrográficas do Nordeste Setentrional implementou muitos reservatórios artificiais com este propósito. Uma lista de espécies de peixes dos reservatórios do PISF foi obtida após amostragens realizadas em oito anos de monitoramento. As campanhas foram realizadas semestralmente em 28 reservatórios divididos em três grupos: Eixo Leste, Eixo Norte e Ramal do Agreste. Os reservatórios amostrados apresentaram um total de 47 espécies, 46 delas foram registradas no Eixo Norte, 27 no Eixo Leste e apenas sete no Ramal do Agreste. Characidae e Cichlidae foram as famílias mais representativas. Os três grupos de reservatórios analisados apresentaram comunidades distintas e a idade, a riqueza e a abundância de cada reservatório foram as variáveis que mais influenciaram a composição das espécies de peixes. Os reservatórios do PISF apresentaram uma ictiofauna diversa e heterogênea, característica de ambientes lênticos. Os principais colonizadores dos reservatórios do PISF foram peixes da bacia doadora do São Francisco, espécies invasoras antropicamente liberadas nesses locais e eventuais espécies das bacias receptoras do entorno. De acordo com o resultado das curvas de acúmulo, um esforço contínuo poderia revelar espécies adicionais, padrões na colonização em longo prazo e contribuir com dados para a fase futura de estabilização dos reservatórios. Visto que espécies invasoras estiveram presentes em quase todos os reservatórios, juntamente com espécies nativas da bacia doadora com potencial de dispersão para as bacias receptoras, um monitoramento continuo e detalhado é essencial para o planejamento de manejo e avaliação de impactos.

Abstract This work was carried out in order to provide the length-weight relationship (LWR) and the allometric condition factor (Ka), as well as its correlation with limnological variables, for Prochilodus lineatus from the middle Tietê River basin. Fish were collected using gill nets in two rivers with contrasting environmental conditions, totaling 46 specimens in the highly polluted Tietê River, and 37 in the Peixe River, a relatively well-conserved tributary. Environmental measures were obtained concomitantly to the fish capture. The results showed an isometric growth (b = 3.00) for the fish from Tietê River and a positive allometric growth (b = 3.23) for the fish from Peixe River. The mean value of Ka was unexpectedly higher for the main river (Ka = 2.63) when compared to its tributary (Ka = 2.42), being statistically different from each other. This can be explained by the much higher availability of organic sediments in the main river, resulting from a long-term eutrophication process. Nevertheless, the positive and statistically significant correlations with dissolved oxygen, for both rivers, as well as significant negative correlations with electric conductivity, nitrogen and chlorophyll a for Tietê River, indicate the negative effects of the water quality deterioration on the fish condition factor. The work contributes to the expansion of knowledge about P. lineatus, the most important commercial fish of the middle Tietê River basin, which is severely impacted by unsustainable human actions.


Resumo Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de fornecer a relação peso-comprimento (LWR) e o fator de condição alométrico (Ka), bem como sua correlação com variáveis limnológicas, para Prochilodus lineatus da bacia do médio rio Tietê. Os peixes foram coletados com redes de espera em dois rios com condições ambientais contrastantes, totalizando 46 espécimes no altamente poluído rio Tietê, e 37 no rio do Peixe, um tributário relativamente bem conservado. Medidas ambientais foram obtidas concomitantemente à captura dos peixes. Os resultados mostraram um crescimento isométrico (b = 3,00) para os peixes do rio Tietê e um crescimento alométrico positivo (b = 3,23) para os peixes do rio do Peixe. O valor médio de Ka foi, inesperadamente, maior para o rio principal (Ka = 2,63) quando comparado ao seu afluente (Ka = 2,42), sendo estatisticamente diferentes entre si. Isso pode ser explicado pela disponibilidade muito maior de sedimentos orgânicos no rio principal, resultante de um longo processo de eutrofização. No entanto, as correlações positivas e estatisticamente significativas com o oxigênio dissolvido, para ambos os rios, bem como correlações significativas negativas com a condutividade elétrica, nitrogênio e clorofila a para o rio Tietê, indicam os efeitos negativos da deterioração da qualidade da água sobre o fator condição dos peixes. O trabalho contribui para a expansão do conhecimento sobre P. lineatus, o peixe de maior importância comercial da bacia do médio rio Tietê, severamente impactada por ações humanas não-sustentáveis.

In General Pueyrredon district, 400 mL of wastewater samples were taken with an automatic sampler for 24 hours, while in Pinamar district, 20 L in total (2.2 L at 20-minute intervals) were taken. Samples were collected once a week. The samples were concentrated based on flocculation using polyaluminum chloride. RNA purification and target gene amplification and detection were performed using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction for clinical diagnosis of human nasopharyngeal swabs. Results. In both districts, the presence of SARS-CoV-2 was detected in wastewater. In General Pueyrredon, SARS-CoV-2 was detected in epidemiological week 28, 2020, which was 20 days before the start of an increase in coronavirus virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in the first wave (epidemiological week 31) and 9 weeks before the maximum number of laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases was recorded. In Pinamar district, the virus genome was detected in epidemiological week 51, 2020 but it was not possible to carry out the sampling again until epidemiological week 4, 2022, when viral circulation was again detected. Conclusions. It was possible to detect SARS-CoV-2 virus genome in wastewater, demonstrating the usefulness of the application of wastewater epidemiology for long-term SARS-CoV-2 detection and monitoring.


RESUMEN Objetivos. Aplicar y evaluar la utilización de muestreos de aguas residuales como método para la detección del coronavirus del síndrome respiratorio agudo severo de tipo 2 (SARS-CoV-2) en dos distritos costeros de la Provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Métodos. Se utilizó un dispositivo de muestreo automático para tomar muestras de 400 mL de las aguas residuales de 24 horas en el distrito de General Pueyrredon, mientras que en el distrito de Pinamar se tomaron muestras de 2,2 L a intervalos de 20 minutos hasta un volumen total de 20 L. Los muestreos se realizaron una vez por semana. Las muestras se concentraron mediante floculación con policloruro de aluminio. La purificación del ARN y la amplificación y detección del gen diana se llevaron a cabo mediante la prueba de reacción en cadena de la polimerasa con retrotranscripción para el diagnóstico clínico a partir de hisopados nasofaríngeos. Resultados. Se observó la presencia de SARS-CoV-2 en las aguas residuales de ambos distritos. En General Pueyrredon, el SARS-CoV-2 se halló en la semana epidemiológica 28 del 2020, es decir, 20 días antes del inicio del aumento de casos de enfermedad por coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) registrado en la primera ola (semana epidemiológica 31) y nueve semanas antes de que se alcanzara el número máximo de casos de COVID-19 con confirmación de laboratorio. En el distrito de Pinamar se detectó el genoma viral en la semana epidemiológica 51 del 2020, pero solo se pudo volver a realizar el muestreo en la semana epidemiológica 4 del 2022, en la que se volvió a detectar la circulación del virus. Conclusiones. Se pudo detectar el genoma del virus SARS-CoV-2 en aguas residuales, lo que muestra la utilidad de la aplicación de la epidemiología de aguas residuales como método para la detección y el seguimiento del SARS-CoV-2 a largo plazo.


RESUMO Objetivos. Implementar e avaliar o uso de amostragem de águas residuais na detecção do coronavírus da síndrome respiratória aguda grave 2 (SARS-CoV-2) em dois distritos costeiros da Província de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Métodos. No distrito de General Pueyrredon, amostras de 400 mL de águas residuais foram coletadas ao longo de 24 horas com um amostrador automático; já no distrito de Pinamar, foram coletados 20 L no total (2,2 L a intervalos de 20 minutos). As amostras foram coletadas uma vez por semana e concentradas por floculação com cloreto de polialumínio. A purificação do RNA e a amplificação e detecção de genes-alvo foram realizadas por meio de reação em cadeia da polimerase com transcrição reversa para diagnóstico clínico de esfregaços nasofaríngeos humanos. Resultados. Detectou-se presença de SARS-CoV-2 em águas residuais dos dois distritos. Em General Pueyrredon, o SARS-CoV-2 foi detectado na semana epidemiológica 28 de 2020, ou seja, 20 dias antes do início de um aumento no número de casos da doença provocada pelo coronavírus de 2019 (COVID-19) na primeira onda (semana epidemiológica 31) e 9 semanas antes de se registrar o número máximo de casos de COVID-19 confirmados em laboratório. No distrito de Pinamar, o genoma viral foi detectado na semana epidemiológica 51 de 2020, mas não foi possível realizar a amostragem novamente até a semana epidemiológica 4 de 2022, quando a circulação do vírus foi novamente constatada. Conclusões. Foi possível detectar o genoma do vírus SARS-CoV-2 em águas residuais, demonstrando a utilidade da aplicação da epidemiologia baseada em águas residuais para detectar e monitorar o SARS-CoV-2 em longo prazo.

ABSTRACT

La presencia de manantiales de aguas mineromedicinales en Ecuador se encuentra en relación con el gran número de volcanes que existen en el país, los cuales se han venido utilizando desde épocas remotas como medicamentos por la población. Sin embargo, se desconoce cuál es la biodiversidad bacteriana presente. Por ello, el objetivo del trabajo fue determinar la biodiversidad bacteriana de las aguas mineromedicinales del balneario “Urauco” ubicado en la Provincia de Pichincha. Ecuador. Se tomaron muestras de agua de un volumen de 1 litro en dos punto del balneario. Los muestreos se realizaron en 2 ocasiones durante un periodo de dos año. Para la toma y transporte de las muestras se siguieron las normas ecuatorianas INEN 2 176-98 y INEN 2 169-98. Para la determinación de la biodiversidad bacteriana se utilizó las técnicas de siembra, selección e identificación de bacterias indicados por Barrow y Feltan (2004) y MacFfadin (2004), complementadas con las pruebas bioquímicas contenidas en las galerías API (BioMérieux) y galería Microgen (Microgen corp.). Los resultados señalan un población de bacterias heterótrofas en las aguas del balneario de 3,1 x 102 UFC/mL, con la prevalencia de las bacterias Gram negativa de la clase Gamma Proteobacterias. Se pudo aislar e identificar 64 colonias de bacterias. Los géneros de bacterias encontrados fueron Acidovorax, Aeromonas, Bacillus, Brevundimonas, Budvicia, Citrobacter, Corynebacterium, Ed- wardsiella, Enterococcus, Ewingella, Flavobacterium, Kurthia, Micrococcus, Proteus, Pseudomonas, Psychrobacter, Ralstonia, Staphylococcus, Vibrio y Yokonella. La biodiversidad bacteriana observada fue alta, aunque escasa en número de individuos. (AU)


The presence of mineromedicinal water springs in Ecuador is related to the large number of volcanoes that exist in the country, which have been used since ancient times as medicines by the population. However, it is unknown what bacterial biodiversity is present. Therefore, the objective of these work was to determine the bacterial biodi- versity of the mineromedicinal waters of “Urauco” spa located in Pichincha Provinces of Ecuador. Water samples of a volume of 1 liter were taken at two points in each spa studied. Sampling was done 2 times over a period of two year. To take and transport the samples, the Ecuadorian standards INEN 2 176-98 and INEN 2 169-98 were followed. For the determination of bacterial biodiversity, the techniques of planting, selection and identification of bacteria indicated by Barrow and Feltan (2004) and MacFfadin (2004) were used, complemented with the bio- chemical tests contained in the API (BioMérieux) galleries and Microgen (Microgen corp.). The results indicate a population of heterotrophic bacteria in the spa waters of 3.1 x 102 CFU / mL, with the prevalence of Gram negative bacteria of the Gamma Proteobacteria class. It was possible to isolate and identify 64 colonies of bacteria. The genera of bacteria were Acidovorax, Aeromonas, Bacillus, Brevundimonas, Budvicia, Citrobacter, Corynebacterium, Edwardsiella, Enterococcus, Ewingella, Flavobacterium, Kurthia, Micrococcus, Proteus, Pseudomonas, Psychrobacter, Ralstonia, Staphylococcus, Vibrio and Yokonella. The bacterial biodiversity observed was high, although low in number. (AU)

ABSTRACT

El agua es esencial para la supervivencia de todos los organismos vivos. Por lo tanto, la reutilización de aguas residuales domésticas para fines de agua no potable es una probable solución para las áreas más necesitadas en agua en todo el mundo. La descarga de aguas residuales domésticas e industriales en los recursos hídricos superficiales y subterráneos es extremadamente dañina para el medio ambiente. La tecnología de biofiltración es una plataforma de tratamiento versátil que se aplica para el tratamiento de agua potable. Se logra cuando los desinfectantes no pueden pasar por un filtro, los microbios crecen y se desarrollan en medios granulares y finalmente conlleva a la aparición de biopelículas activas. El objetivo del siguiente artículo es ofrecer al distrito de Huancayo, Perú una alternativa para reciclar las aguas residuales en esta localidad. Los resultados de este trabajo permitieron el diseño de biofiltro para el tratamiento de agua servidas de la ciudad de Huancayo, en Perú para ser utilizado en el cementerio ecológico de dicha ciudad. El caudal a ser manejado durante el tratamiento de aguas servidas fue de 0,35L/s; esto permitió un bioflitro con las siguientes características: 13,78m de largo y 6,89m de largo con una profundidad de 0,8m adecuados para el tratamiento de estas aguas servidas. Los cálculos de degradación de materia orgánica según los parámetros de DBO y DQO permitieron una remoción de la carga orgánica de 78mg/m2 al día. Estos resultados fueron excelentes para poder mantener la calidad de vida del ecosistema(AU)


Water is essential for the survival of all living organisms. Therefore, the reuse of domestic wastewater for non-potable water purposes is a likely solution for the areas most in need of water throughout the world. The discharge of domestic and industrial wastewater into surface and groundwater resources is extremely harmful to the environment. Biofiltration technology is a versatile treatment platform that is applied for the treatment of drinking water. It is achieved when disinfectants cannot pass through a filter, microbes grow and thrive in granular media, and ultimately leads to the appearance of active biofilms. The objective of the following article is to offer the district of Huancayo, Peru an alternative to recycle wastewater in this town. The results of this work allowed the design of a biofilter for the treatment of wastewater from the city of Huancayo, in Peru to be used in the ecological cemetery of said city. The flow to be managed during the sewage treatment was 0.35 L/s; this allowed a biofliter with the following characteristics: 13.78 m long and 6.89 m long with a depth of 0.8 m suitable for the treatment of these sewage. The organic matter degradation calculations according to the BOD and COD parameters allowed a removal of the organic load of 78 mg/m2 per day. These results were excellent to be able to maintain the quality of life of the ecosystem(AU)

Introducción: La cuantificación de SARS-CoV-2 en aguas residuales es una herramienta que permite determinar la tendencia de la circulación viral en un área geográfica determinada. Objetivo: Cuantificar el virus SARS-CoV-2 en 15 plantas de tratamiento de aguas residuales en diferentes ciudades de Chile para establecer una comparación con las variables de: i) casos activos por cada 100.000 habs.; ii) positividad diaria (casos nuevos); y iii) fases del plan de confinamiento. Metodología: SARS-CoV-2 se concentró a partir de muestras de aguas residuales. Para obtener el número de genomas del virus por litro se realizó una cuantificación absoluta utilizando qRT-PCR. Resultados: Entre enero y junio de 2021 se procesaron 253 muestras, siendo todas positivas para la presencia del virus. Asimismo, se logró determinar que la tasa de casos activos por cada 100.000 habs. es la variable que mejor se ajusta a las tendencias obtenidas con la cuantificación de la carga viral en las aguas residuales. Conclusiones: La cuantificación de SARS-CoV-2 en las aguas residuales de manera permanente es una herramienta eficiente para determinar la tendencia del virus en un área geográfica determinada y, en conjunto con una vigilancia genómica, puede constituirse en una vigilancia centinela ideal generando alertas sobre futuros brotes.


Background: The quantification of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater is a tool that allows determining the trend of viral circulation in a particular geographical area. Aim: To quantify the SARS-CoV-2 virus in 15 wastewater treatment plants in different Chilean cities to establish a comparison with the variables of: i) Active cases per 100,000 inhabitants; ii) daily positivity (novel cases); and iii) phases of the lockdown strategy. Methods: SARS-CoV-2 was concentrated from wastewater samples. To obtain the number of virus genomes per liter, absolute quantification was performed using qRT-PCR. Results: Between January and June 2021, 253 samples were processed, all of which were positive for the presence of the virus. Likewise, it will be determined that the rate of active cases per 100,000 inhabitants is the variable that best fits the trends obtained with the quantification of the viral load in wastewater. Conclusions: The quantification of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater as a continuous strategy is an efficient tool to determine the trend of the viral circulation in a delimited geographical area and, combined with genomic surveillance, it can constitute an ideal sentinel surveillance alert on future outbreaks.

En la actualidad la contaminación de las aguas terrestres es un grave problema ambiental. La industria farmacéutica es una de las que produce un mayor impacto por la gran variedad de químicos que aporta al agua; sus efluentes generalmente tienen asociadas elevadas cargas orgánicas no biodegradables. La preservación de la calidad de las aguas terrestres es un tema regulado por la legislación nacional, donde se exige la caracterización de las aguas residuales antes de su vertimiento con vistas a evaluar el impacto ambiental que producen y diseñar el sistema adecuado para su tratamiento. El Instituto Finlay de Vacunas, pertenece al grupo de BioCubaFarma, es una empresa de ciclo completo, cuenta con nueve instalaciones, cinco de ellas son generadoras de grandes volúmenes de aguas residuales industriales. El presente trabajo tiene el objetivo de presentar los resultados obtenidos en la evaluación de los parámetros físico-químico de los residuales líquidos del proceso productivo de conjugados monovalentes, para esto se muestrearon los residuales líquidos generados al final de cada etapa del proceso. Se determinaron los indicadores de contaminación: pH, temperatura, conductividad eléctrica, demanda química y bioquímica de oxígeno, fósforo total, nitrógeno total y sólidos sedimentables; los ensayos fueron realizados en el laboratorio de la Empresa Nacional de Servicios Técnicos de la Habana, acreditado para la realización de las caracterizaciones de aguas residuales. Los resultados fueron comparados con los límites máximos permisibles establecidos en la Norma Cubana NC-27:2012 de vertimiento de aguas residuales al alcantarillado, además se calculó el índice de biodegradabilidad. Se demostró que el pH, la conductividad eléctrica, demanda química de oxígeno y demanda bioquímica de oxígeno no cumplen con el vertido para la descarga al alcantarillado pudiendo impactar de manera negativa en los recursos hídricos(AU)


At present, the pollution of terrestrial waters is a serious environmental problem. The drug industry is one of those that produces a greater impact, due to the great variety of chemicals that can contribute to the water; its effluents generally have associated high non-biodegradable organic loads. The preservation of the quality of terrestrial waters is a subject regulated by legislation, where the characterization of wastewater is required before its discharge, since it allows evaluating the environmental impact it produces and designing the appropriate system for its treatment. The Finlay Vaccine Institute, belongs to the BioCubaFarma group, is a full cycle company, has nine facilities, five of them are generators of large volumes of industrial wastewater. The current work presents the results obtained in the evaluation of the physical-chemical parameters of the liquid waste from the production process of monovalent conjugates, for this the liquid waste generated at the end of each stage of the process was sampled. Pollution indicators were determined: pH, temperature, electrical conductivity, chemical and biochemical oxygen demand, total phosphorus, total nitrogen and sedimentable solids. The results were compared with the maximum permissible limits established in NC-27: 2012 for the discharge of wastewater. The biodegradability index was also calculated. It was shown that some of the determined parameters do not comply with the discharge to release to the sewer system, which could have a negative impact on water resources(AU)

ABSTRACT

Las precipitaciones extremas representan uno de los eventos naturales climáticos más importantes y pueden originar inundaciones devastadoras. De junio a agosto del 2014 se registró una de las más graves inundaciones en la historia de la ciudad de Asunción. Ocasionó un incremento considerable del nivel del río Paraguay y el desplazamiento de 300.000 personas a campamentos provisionales. Debido a que el contacto directo con el agua de inundación, el consumo de agua contaminada y la congregación de los afectados en refugios provisorios son factores de riesgo para enfermedades infecciosas, el objetivo de este estudio fue la implementación de una metodología estandarizada para la concentración y detección de virus entéricos y micobacterias no tuberculosas, por PCR en tiempo real y PCR-asociada al análisis de restricción enzimática (PRA), en muestras de agua de inundaciones y el reporte de los patógenos detectados en las zonas afectadas de Asunción y en la Bahía del Río Paraguay. La metodología propuesta demostró poseer buena sensibilidad y se registró la presencia de rotavirus, norovirus (genogrupos I y II), astrovirus, adenovirus entéricos y micobacterias no tuberculosas en 50% (N=4/8) de las muestras de los barrios Sajonia, San Jerónimo y Ricardo Brugada, Chacarita. Además, reportamos datos secundarios de casos de enfermedades infecciosas, registrados en los servicios de salud de los barrios afectados durante el periodo de inundación.


Extreme rainfall represents one of the most important natural climatic events and can cause devastating floods. From June to August 2014, one of the most serious floods in the history of the city of Asunción was recorded. It caused a considerable increase in the level of the Paraguay River and the displacement of 300,000 people to temporary camps. Since direct contact with flood water, consumption of contaminated water and the congregation of those affected in temporary shelters are risk factors for infectious diseases, the objective of this study was the implementation of a standardized methodology for the concentration and detection of enteric viruses and non-tuberculous mycobacteria, by real-time PCR and PCR-associated enzyme restriction analysis (PRA), in samples of flood water and the report of the pathogens detected in the affected areas of Asunción and in the Bay of the Paraguay River. The proposed methodology proved to have good sensitivity and the presence of rotavirus, norovirus (genogroups I and II), astrovirus, enteric adenovirus and non-tuberculous mycobacteria was recorded in 50% (N=4/8) of the samples from the Sajonia, San Jeronimo and Ricardo Brugada, Chacarita neighborhoods. In addition, we report secondary data on cases of infectious diseases, registered in the health services of the affected neighborhoods during the flood period.

Resumen Introducción: la enfermedad diarreica es una de las principales causas de muerte en niños menores de cinco años. Uno de los agentes etiológicos bacterianos más reconocido es Escherichia coli, que puede causar infecciones a través de diversos mecanismos asociados a la adquisición de genes de virulencia. Metodología: se recolectaron muestras de aguas residuales en los afluentes y los efluentes de cinco plantas de tratamiento de la Gran Área Metropolitana, durante tres días consecutivos, en los meses de marzo, mayo, octubre y diciembre del año 2013, a fin de cuantificar la concentración de E. coli, mediante la técnica de fermentación en tubos múltiples, y evaluar la presencia de los genes de virulencia aatA, bfpA, eaeA, ipaH, lt, st, stx1 y stx2, vinculados con patotipos de E. coli diarrogénica, con la técnica de PCR punto final. Resultados: el estudio reveló niveles de E. coli similares a los encontrados en afluentes de otras regiones del mundo, en cambio, los efluentes presentaron concentraciones superiores a los 4 Log10 NMP/100 mL. La circulación anual de genes de virulencia fue relacionada con los patotipos enterotoxigénica, productores de toxina Shiga/enterohemorrágica, enteroagregativa y enteropatógena. No se detectaron genes referentes a la variedad enteroinvasora. Además, se determinó que no todas las plantas de tratamiento remueven significativamente la carga de E. coli. Conclusiones: el flujo de E. coli diarrogénica es común en nuestro país y su diseminación en el ambiente es posible cuando los efluentes se descargan en cuerpos de aguas superficiales


Abstract Introduction. Diarrheic disease is one of the most important diseases causes in children under five years. One of the most recognized etiological agents is Escherichia coli. This bacterium has the capacity of causing infections by multiple mechanisms associated with the acquisition of different virulence genes. Methodology: water samples were collected from the affluents and effluents of five wastewater treatment plants located in the Costa Rican Great Metropolitan Area, during three sequential days, in March, May, October, and December from 2013. The aim was to quantify E. colis concentration by multiple tubes fermentation method and to evaluate the presence of aatA, bfpA, eaeA, ipaH, lt, st, stx1, and stx2 virulence genes, related with diarrheagenic E. coli, by PCR end-point method. Results: The study revealed that the levels of E. coli into the affluents are similar to those reported in other world regions. The effluents concentration presented higher than 4 Log10 NMP/100 mL level of E. coli. A year-round circulation of virulence genes was demonstrated, and it was associated with enterotoxigenic, Shiga-toxin producers/ enterohemorrhagic, enteroaggregative, and enteropathogenic pathotypes. Genes related to enteroinvasive variety did not were detected. Not all wastewater treatment plants removed E. coli efficiently. Conclusions: Diarrheagenic E. coli circulation is common in our county with the possibility of dissemination to the environment by effluents wastewater discharge in surface water bodies.

Introdução: O SARS-CoV-2 é um novo tipo de coronavírus capaz de infectar humanos e causar a Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), enfermidade que tem causado enormes impactos no Brasil e no mundo. A doença, devido às suas altas taxas de disseminação e letalidade, foi declarada pandêmica pela Organização Mundial da Saúde no primeiro semestre de 2020. Vários estudos têm frequentemente indicado a detecção de fragmentos de RNA do SARS-CoV-2 em amostras de redes de esgoto, estações de tratamento e águas naturais. A presença do SARS-CoV-2 nesses ambientes tem levantado a possibilidade de transmissão pelo contato com águas contaminadas e aerossóis gerados durante seus fluxos ou tratamentos. Objetivo: Descrever relatos de detecção do novo coronavírus em amostras obtidas em redes de esgotos, em lodos residuais de plantas de tratamento e em corpos d'água naturais, e apresentar a viabilidade desse vírus quando inoculado artificialmente nesses ambientes. Método: Revisão integrativa de literatura fundamentada em artigos científicos escritos em inglês ou português, indexados nas bases de dados do Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar e MedRxiv. Resultados: Foi possível destacar os riscos que o SARS-CoV-2 proporciona às populações de humanos e de animais selvagens quando presente nas águas residuais, estratégias cabíveis de serem utilizadas para limitar a propagação desse patógeno nas matrizes aquáticas, e a importância da implementação de sistemas de monitoramento epidemiológico nesses locais. Conclusões: A fim de reduzir os riscos de surtos emergentes e reemergentes da COVID-19 por meio de matrizes aquosas, abordagens preventivas em relação à presença do SARS-CoV-2 nesses ambientes têm sido fortemente recomendadas.


Introduction: SARS-CoV-2 is a new type of  coronavirus capable of infecting humans and cause the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), an illness that has causing enormous impacts in Brazil and worldwide. The disease, due to its high-level dissemination and lethality rates, was declared pandemic by the World Health Organization in the first half of 2020. Several studies have frequently indicated the detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA fragments in samples from sewage networks, treatment plants and natural waters. The presence of SARS-CoV-2 in those environments has raised the possibility of transmission through the contact with contaminated waters and aerosols generated during their flow or treatment. Objective: Describe detection reports of the new coronavius in samples obtained from sewage networks, from waste sludges of treatment plants and from natural water bodies, and present the viability of this virus when artificially inoculated in those environments. Method: Integrative literature review based on scientific articles written in English or Portuguese, indexed in the Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar and MedRxiv databases. Results: It was possible to highlight the risks that the SARS-CoV-2 poses to human and wildlife populations when present in wastewater, appropriate strategies to be used to limit the spread of this pathogen in aquatic matrices, and the importance of implementing epidemiological monitoring systems in those places. Conclusions: In order to reduce the risks of emerging and re- emerging outbreaks of COVID-19 through aqueous matrices, precautionary approaches regarding the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in those environments have been strongly recommended.

ABSTRACT

As agricultural land use and climate change continue to pose increasing threats to biodiversity in sub-Saharan Africa, efforts are being made to identify areas where trade-offs between future agricultural development and terrestrial biodiversity conservation are expected to be greatest. However, little research so far has focused on freshwater biodiversity conservation in the context of agricultural development in sub-Saharan Africa. We aimed to identify lakes and lake areas where freshwater biodiversity is most likely to be affected by eutrophication and Harmful Algal Blooms (i.e., when algae multiply to the extent that they have toxic effects on people and freshwater fauna), some of the most important emerging threats to freshwater ecosystems worldwide, especially with the onset of climate change. Using novel remote-sensing techniques, we identified lakes that demonstrated high biodiversity and algal bloom levels. We calculated the richness of freshwater species and the normalized difference chlorophyll index (NDCI) to prioritize lakes in Ghana, Ethiopia, Zambia, and bordering countries, of high priority for conservation. We identified 169 priority lakes and lake areas for conservation, based on high levels of biodiversity exposed to potentially harmful algal blooms. Zambia had the most lakes identified as conservation priorities (76% of its small lakes and five 100-km2 areas in large lakes). Many of the conservation priority lakes and lake areas identified in this study were in transboundary watersheds; thus, collaborative water resource management and conservation at the watershed scale is needed. The use of remote-sensing tools to prioritize freshwater systems for conservation according to algal-bloom risk is vital in remote, undersampled world regions, especially given the increasing threat posed to freshwater biodiversity by rapidly expanding agriculture and climate change.


Priorización de la Conservación en los Lagos Sub-Saharianos con base en Medidas de Biodiversidad de Aguas Dulces y Floración de Algas Resumen Conforme el cambio climático y el uso de suelo para cultivos siguen representando amenazas crecientes para la biodiversidad en la región sub-sahariana de África, se están realizando esfuerzos para identificar las áreas en donde se espera que sucedan las mayores compensaciones entre el desarrollo agrícola venidero y la conservación de la biodiversidad terrestre. Sin embargo, pocas investigaciones se han centrado en la conservación de la biodiversidad de aguas dulces dentro del contexto del desarrollo agrícola en esta región de África. Nos enfocamos en localizar las áreas en donde sea más probable que la biodiversidad de aguas dulces se vea afectada por la eutrofización y las floraciones de algas (es decir, cuando las algas se multiplican a tal grado que tienen efectos tóxicos sobre las personas y la fauna de agua dulce), dos de las amenazas emergentes más importantes para los ecosistemas de agua dulce en todo el mundo debido al cambio climático. Mediante técnicas novedosas de teledetección identificamos los lagos que se traslapaban con áreas de gran biodiversidad y floraciones de algas. Calculamos la riqueza de especies de agua dulce y el índice de diferencia normalizada de clorofila (IDNC) para identificar los lagos de suma importancia para la conservación en Ghana, Etiopía, Zambia y sus países fronterizos. Identificamos 169 áreas prioritarias para la conservación con base en los niveles elevados de biodiversidad expuestos a las floraciones de algas potencialmente dañinas. Zambia tuvo la mayor cantidad de lagos identificados como prioridades de conservación (76% de sus lagos pequeños y cinco áreas de 100 km2 en los grandes lagos). Las amenazas para la biodiversidad de agua dulce estuvieron presentes a nivel de cuenca, con frecuencia con una extensión más allá de las fronteras políticas de un país; por lo tanto, se requiere que el manejo de recursos hídricos y la conservación sean esfuerzos colaborativos a nivel de cuenca. El uso de herramientas de teledetección para priorizar la conservación de los sistemas de agua dulce de acuerdo con el riesgo de floración de algas es vital en las regiones remotas y poco muestreadas del mundo, especialmente debido a la amenaza creciente que representan el cambio climático y la expansión agrícola para la biodiversidad de agua dulce.

Abstract Potable water supply and sanitization in rural areas in developing countries are still inadequate. The main risk associated with unsafe drinking water is the infection with pathogenic microorganisms. Objective: In this study, we investigate the bacterial diversity and the potentially pathogenic bacteria in water samples from diffe rent points of distribution in three rural villages from the Andean region of Colombia. Methods: Illumina libraries for water samples were prepared and sequenced using 300 bp paired-end MiSeq protocol, the bioinformatic analyses were performed with Mothur pipeline and the phyloseq package in Rstudio. Results: The mi crobial community composition showed statistically significant differences according to the village and the sample origin. Alpha, Beta, and Gammaproteobacteria were the dominant class detected in all water samples. The most relevant pathogenic genera detected in the surface were Legionella, Mycobacterium, Yersinia, Burkholderia, and Rickettsia. In the tap water samples, potential pathogens like Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Corynebacterium, Nocardia, and Escherichia/Shige lla were detected.


Resumen El suministro y potabilización del agua de consumo humano en las zonas rurales de los países en vías de desarrollo sigue siendo limitado. El principal riesgo asociado con el uso de agua no potable es la infección con microorganismos patógenos. Objetivo: En este estudio se investigó la diversidad bacteriana y la presencia de bacterias potencialmente patógenas en muestras de agua de diferentes puntos de distribución en tres asentamientos rurales de la región andina de Colombia. Métodos: Se prepararon y secuenciaron bibliotecas de amplicones (rDNA 16S) para muestras de agua utilizando la plataforma Illumina MiSeq con lecturas pareadas de 300 bases. Los análisis bioinformáticos se realizaron con el programa Mothur y el paquete estadístico Phyloseq en Rstudio. Resultados: La composición de la comunidad microbiana mostró diferencias estadísticamente significativas según el sitio y el origen de la muestra. Alfa, Beta y Gammaproteobac terias fueron las clase dominantes detectadas en todas las muestras de agua. Los géneros patógenos más relevantes detectados fueron Legionella, Mycobacterium, Yersinia, Burkholderia y Rickettsia. En las muestras de agua del grifo se detectaron patógenos potenciales como Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Corynebacterium, Nocardia y Escherichia /Shigella.

RESUMO No Brasil, os impactos socioambientais da crise hídrica são intensificados uma vez que a drenagem e o manejo das águas pluviais são marcados por ausências e limitações de políticas públicas. O saneamento básico é de titularidade municipal e, para o exercício desse direito e dever, é fundamental que os municípios estruturem a política municipal, sendo o planejamento seu principal instrumento. Nesse contexto, buscou-se neste artigo identificar e analisar o panorama da elaboração de Planos Municipais de Saneamento Básico e de Planos Diretores de Drenagem Urbana nos municípios do estado de Minas Gerais com população inferior a 50 mil habitantes e comparar esses resultados com as informações divulgadas pelo Sistema Nacional de Informações sobre Saneamento no ano de 2019. Realizaram-se buscas na internet e contatos com os municípios, por telefone, e foi possível identificar que, entre os 752 municípios de Minas Gerais de pequeno porte, 499 possuem Planos Municipais de Saneamento Básico, enquanto nenhum possui Planos Diretores de Drenagem Urbana. Ao comparar esses resultados com as informações divulgadas pelo Sistema Nacional de Informações sobre Saneamento, observou-se que 79 municípios prestaram informações inconsistentes relacionadas à existência de Planos Municipais de Saneamento Básico e 48 afirmaram possuir Planos Diretores de Drenagem Urbana. Conclui-se que muitos municípios mineiros ainda não possuem Planos Municipais de Saneamento Básico, e que o processo de coleta dos dados do Sistema Nacional de Informações sobre Saneamento precisa ser aprimorado para que haja melhor qualidade dos dados divulgados. A ausência de instrumentos de planejamento que auxiliem a efetivação da política municipal é um importante problema a ser superado para o enfrentamento dos complexos desafios que envolvem a drenagem e o manejo das águas pluviais municipal.


ABSTRACT In Brazil, the impacts of the water crisis are intensified since the Drainage and Rainwater Management are marked by absences and limitations of public policies. Basic sanitation is a municipal property and for the exercise of this right and duty, it is essential that the municipalities structure the municipal policy, with planning as their main instrument. In this context, this article aimed to identify and analyze the panorama of the elaboration of Municipal Basic Sanitation Plans and Master Plans for Urban Drainage in the municipalities of the state of Minas Gerais with a population of less than 50,000 inhabitants and to compare these results with the information released by the National Sanitation Information System, in 2019. Internet searches and contacts with the municipalities were carried out by telephone, so that it was possible to identify that among the 752 small-sized ones in Minas Gerais, 499 of them have Municipal Basic Sanitation Plans, while none of them have Master Plans for Urban Drainage. When comparing these results with the information released by the National Sanitation Information System, it was observed that 79 municipalities provided inconsistent information related to the existence of Municipal Basic Sanitation Plans and 48 municipalities claimed to have Master Plans for Urban Drainage. It is concluded that many municipalities in Minas Gerais do not yet have Municipal Basic Sanitation Plans and that the process of collecting National Sanitation Information System data needs to be improved so that there is a better quality of the data released. The absence of planning instruments to assist the implementation of municipal policy is an important problem to be overcome in order to face the complex challenges involving municipal Stormwater Drainage and Management.

ABSTRACT The high consumption of water and the generation of greywater in laundromats underscore the need to investigate advanced treatment techniques to reuse this effluent. Based on the estimated growth figures of the laundromat sector in Brazil, this study looked into the efficiency of electrocoagulation to treat laundromat greywater. Electrodes were connected to an EC reactor on a monopolar parallel connection mode, with electric current of 6 A and current density of 400 A.m2. The highest efficiency to treat laundromat greywater was observed at a distance of 15 mm between electrodes, voltage of 17.14 V, and operation time of 30 min, when the removal values of apparent color, true color, turbidity, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, and surfactants were 92, 97, 88, 91, 98, and 96%, respectively. Electrode consumption was measured at 1.82 g.h, while energy consumption was 20.54 kWh.m3 and the total cost was US$ 4.10 per cubic meter of treated effluent. However, despite the high efficiency of the treatment, reuse of treated laundromat effluent requires polishing in order to meet the standards defined by Brazilian regulations.


RESUMO O elevado consumo de água potável e a consequente geração de efluentes associados ao segmento de lavanderias domésticas justificam o estudo de tratamentos avançados que proporcionem o reuso dessas águas. Considerando-se uma perspectiva de crescimento desse setor em nível nacional, esta pesquisa avaliou a eletrocoagulação como tecnologia de tratamento de tais efluentes. Foram executados testes de bancada utilizando eletrodos em alumínio, arranjados como monopolar paralelo. A corrente elétrica e a densidade de corrente foram fixadas em 6A e 400A.m², respectivamente. Entre as variáveis avaliadas estão a distância entre eletrodos, o tempo de operação, o tipo de roupa, a utilização de alvejante e o suporte para eletrólise. O melhor tratamento foi obtido sem a utilização do suporte para eletrólise, para uma distância entre eletrodos de 15 mm, tensão elétrica aplicada no sistema de 17,14 V e tempo de operação igual a 30 min. Nessas condições, as eficiências do tratamento obtidas foram de 92% para cor aparente, 97% para cor verdadeira, 88% para turbidez, 91% para demanda bioquímica de oxigênio, 98% para demanda química de oxigênio e 96% para surfactantes. O sistema resultou no consumo de eletrodo de 1,83 g.h e no consumo de energia elétrica igual a 20,57 kWh.m³. O custo final do tratamento foi calculado em US$ 4,10.m³ de efluente tratado. Embora tenham sido obtidas elevadas remoções nas concentrações dos poluentes, para o reuso do efluente ainda é necessário um tratamento adicional.
