ABSTRACT

This study examines the impact of analysts coverage on real earnings management (REM) decisions. The study further investigates the effect of mandatory IFRS adoption on the relationship between analyst coverage and REM. We constructed a sample of UK non-financial listed firms for the period 1997-2021. The results demonstrate that firms followed by a large number of financial analysts record higher levels of earnings management. This result supports the contention that high intensity of analyst coverage imposes extra pressure on firms' managers to meet analysts' earnings per share (EPS) expectations, motivating a higher level of earnings management. Contrary to expectations, the introduction of IFRS fails to strengthen the monitoring role of security analysts on firms' management: rather, managers utilize the inherent flexibility and available discretion in the principles-based IFRS to meet analysts' benchmarks by means of REM activities. These results are robust after controlling endogeneity.

ABSTRACT

This paper shows that the empirical distribution of cross-sectional analyst coverage in China's stock markets follows an exponential law in a given month from 2011 to 2020. The findings hold in both the emerging (Shanghai) and the developed market (Hong Kong). Moreover, the unique distribution parameter (i.e., mean) is directly related to the amount of market-wide information. Average analyst coverage exhibits a significant negative predictive power for stock-market uncertainty, highlighting the role of security analysts in diminishing the total uncertainty. The exponential law can be derived from the maximum entropy principle (MEP). When analysts, who are constrained by average ability in generating information (i.e., the first-order moment), strive to maximize the amount of market-wide information, this objective yields the exponential distribution. Contrary to the conventional wisdom that security analysts specialize in the generation of firm-specific information, empirical findings suggest that analysts primarily produce market-wide information for 25 countries. Nevertheless, it remains unclear why cross-sectional analyst coverage reflects market-wide information, this paper provides an entropy-based explanation.

ABSTRACT

The Connecticut Newborn Screening (NBS) Network, in partnership with the Connecticut Department of Public Health, strategically utilized the Epic electronic health record (EHR) system to establish registries for tracking long-term follow-up (LTFU) of NBS patients. After launching the LTFU registry in 2019, the Network obtained funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration to address the slow adoption by specialty care teams. An LTFU model was implemented in the three highest-volume specialty care teams at Connecticut Children's, involving an early childhood cohort diagnosed with an NBS-identified disorder since the formation of the Network in March 2019. This cohort grew from 87 to 115 over the two-year project. Methods included optimizing registries, capturing external data from Health Information Exchanges, incorporating evidence-based guidelines, and conducting qualitative and quantitative evaluations. The early childhood cohort demonstrated significant and sustainable improvements in the percentage of visits up-to-date (%UTD) compared to the non-intervention legacy cohort of patients diagnosed with an NBS disorder before the formation of the Network. Positive trends in the early childhood cohort, including %UTD for visits and condition-specific performance metrics, were observed. The qualitative evaluation highlighted the achievability of practice behavior changes for specialty care teams through responsive support from the nurse analyst. The Network's model serves as a use case for applying and achieving the adoption of population health tools within an EHR system to track care delivery and quickly fill identified care gaps, with the aim of improving long-term health for NBS patients.

ABSTRACT

This article explores the impact of the analyst's life-threatening illness on the analytic couple; it is informed through two theoretical lenses - Freud's ideas about the vicissitudes of mourning, which have been elaborated on by Melanie Klein and John Steiner, and Christopher Bollas's ideas about destiny and idiom. Clinical material will focus on my on-going work with a middle-aged man who has a history of early abandonment and loss and who struggles with being able to remain separate from his objects while being in relationship with them.

ABSTRACT

At present, there are few studies exploring the impact of market-based environmental regulation on ESG performance based on the perspective of carbon emission trading scheme (CETS). This paper aims to supplement this research field through empirical analysis. Taking Shanghai-Shenzhen A-share listed companies from 2012 to 2022 as the research object, this paper studies the impact of CETS, a market-based environmental regulation tool, on the ESG performance of enterprises by constructing a time-varying DID model and examines the mediating roles of green technology innovation, agency cost and analyst attention. The results show that the implementation of CETS can significantly boost ESG performance, and green technology innovation, agency cost, and analyst attention play a partial intermediary role between the two, while the mediating effects of green total factor productivity and green total factor energy efficiency are not significant. In terms of heterogeneity analysis, the study shows that CETS implementation has a more substantial promotion effect on ESG performance in non-state-owned enterprises, non-politically connected enterprises and non-high-tech enterprises. In this paper, the robustness test was carried out through PSM-DID, placebo test and replacement of explained variables, and the test results further supported the hypothesis in this paper. This study enriched the research on the impact of market-based environmental regulation on ESG from the perspective of CETS. It provided enlightenment for enterprises to improve ESG performance to a strategic level, improve the level of green technology innovation, and the government to implement differentiated environmental governance policies.

ABSTRACT

The panel discussion presented at the New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute's 1066th Scientific Meeting held on June 8, 2023, takes up aging and dying of an analyst and their impact on patients and on the nature of analytic process. Participants reflect on conflicts and challenges arising with more analysts and patients living to an advanced age, on the unregulated nature of analysts' retirement, and on multilayered meanings of analysts' ethical commitment to their work.

ABSTRACT

This reflection on the initial stages of treatment of a latency girl whose previous analyst died offers some insights into inner workings of mourning in children. The mourning process intersects in complex ways with a developmental stage, object constancy, unconscious phantasies, and conscious ideas about life and death. Clinical material illustrates some challenges that emerge in the transference-countertransference matrix when working with a child who lost both her primary object (the mother) and her transference object (the analyst). The reality of the analyst's death emphasizes that for a child patient the analyst is always a transference object and a real object at once.

ABSTRACT

This is a two-part paper: in the first one, a personal story serves as a conceptual prism through which I address the issue of how a queer analyst can be a problem for analytical psychology; in the second, I present some readings and images-mostly from decolonial feminisms-that have been of interest to me lately in my path to queer Jungian psychology, that is, to de-essentialize and de-individualize its theory and practice. By borrowing (and altering) the title from Gloria Anzaldúa's (1991/2009a) essay "To(o) queer the writer", this paper explores some themes she has elaborated there on solidarity, theorization and ways of writing and reading from othered points of view. In dialogue with Donna Haraway's (2016) Staying with the Trouble and Ursula K. Le Guin's (1989/2000) The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction, together with the imagery of bags, weaving and string figures game, this paper aims to explore the potential of what I have called "woven onto-epistemologies". By imagining and developing this new condition of knowledge, other stories and theories in analytical psychology may have an opportunity to be told.

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the impact of China's Low-Carbon Pilot Policy on analyst forecast behaviors. Using a staggered difference-in-difference approach, we find that the program reduced analyst forecast errors and divergence, as mandatory sustainability disclosures enable analysts to incorporate new information to improve forecast quality. The effect is concentrated in state-owned firms and manufacturing-oriented cities. Additional tests explore accounting information quality and investor attention as plausible channels. Overall, exploiting a major Chinese environmental regulation, we provide novel evidence that green policies can enhance transparency and capital market efficiency. The findings offer implications for regulators, investors, and managers as countries pursue climate change mitigation strategies.

ABSTRACT

This study theoretically and empirically analyzes the impact and mechanism of corporate green transformation on accrual earnings management using a sample of China's A-share listed companies from 2015 to 2021. The results indicate that the green transformation of enterprises helps restrain accrual-based earnings management, especially accrual-based earnings management, which increases profits, and that the inhibition effect of enterprise green transformation on earnings management is more significant in high-tech and growth-stage enterprises. The mechanism test shows that corporate green transformation can inhibit accrual-based earnings management by increasing analyst follow-up and easing financing constraints. Using China's environmental tax law, promulgated in 2018, as an exogenous shock to construct the PSM-DID, the conclusion still holds after alleviating endogeneity. Further research has found that green transformations can also help inhibit real earnings management. This study provides new empirical evidence for a comprehensive understanding and evaluation of the governance role of corporate green transformation and provides a reference value for further comprehensively promoting the green transformation of Chinese enterprises and improving the quality of accounting information.

ABSTRACT

Several organizations have outlined the need for standardized methods for conducting physical fit comparisons. This study answers this call by developing and evaluating a systematic and transparent approach for examining, documenting, and interpreting textile physical fits, using qualitative feature descriptors and a quantitative metric (Edge Similarity Score, ESS) for the physical fit examination of textile materials. Here, the results from 1027 textile physical fit comparisons are reported. This includes the evaluation of inter and intraanalyst variation when using this method for hand-torn and stabbed fabrics. ESS higher than 80% and ESS lower than 20%, respectively, support fit and nonfit conclusions. The results show that analyst accuracy ranges from 88% to 100% when using this criterion. The estimated false-positive rate for this dataset (2% false positives, 10 of 477 true nonfit pairs) demonstrates the importance of assessing the quality of a physical fit during an examination and reveals that potential errors are low, but possible in textile physical fit examinations. The risk of error must be accounted for in the interpretation and verification processes. Further analysis shows that factors such as the separation method, construction, and design of the samples do not substantially influence the ESS values. Additionally, the proposed method is independently evaluated by 15 practitioners in an interlaboratory exercise that demonstrates satisfactory reproducibility between participants. The standardized terminology and documentation criteria are the first steps toward validating approaches to streamline the peer review process, minimize bias and subjectivity, and convey the probative value of the evidence.

ABSTRACT

The present work presents the possibility of applying the David Liberman Algorithm (ADL) as an instrument in the field of supervision, from a text taken as a report by a supervisor, which aims to address the problem related to psychic change from the analyst's interventions and of a difficulty that arises from the patient's use of the intervention to attackthe analysis. It begins with a study of a countertransferential enactmentreported by the analyst, and later analyzes the theoretical construction presented by him, identifying that his conceptual elaboration was still induced by the influx of the patient's speech. The emphasis of the investigation lies in developing a foundation regarding the link between clinical practice and conceptual elaboration, guided by the categories related to the taxonomy of interventions and origin, function and errors of thought presented by Maldavsky, as occurs in a supervisión AU

ABSTRACT

This paper uses the IV-2SLS model to explore the impact of analyst attention on firms' innovation paths from a dynamic perspective of the life cycle. When firms are in the growth stage, the higher the analyst attention, the more firms will significantly increase their internal R&D expenses and make active technology acquisitions; As firms enter maturity, analyst attention plays a role in promoting R&D investment and corporate venture capital activities; When enterprises are in the decline period, firms are more inclined to innovate independently under the influence of analyst attention. This bias is more significant in non-state enterprises and high-tech enterprises. Further study finds that the interaction between analyst attention and firms' innovation paths under different life cycles effectively enhances innovation output.

ABSTRACT

In hopes of contributing to the developing self-critique of relational analysis, I offer a case that illustrates a modified approach, one informed by current dialogue. The patient described had considerable unmet selfobject needs and a schizoid sensitivity to intrusion, engendering the question explored: How do two minds meet if one is largely relationally dissociated and acutely vulnerable when integrated? A premature emphasis on intersubjectivity would have obscured the patient's narcissistic needs and reinforced her tendency to retreat. Suspending the goal of intersubjectivity allowed for a regressive process to occur, and for contact to become safe before analyst and patient paved the way for future mutual relatedness.

ABSTRACT

Supervision is paramount within applied behavior analysis. This is particularly true in the case of Board Certified Behavior Analysts® (BCBAs®) and trainees (i.e., those accruing hours and experience to become BCBAs). Given the importance of supervision in shaping future BCBAs (and subsequently the field of applied behavior analysis), researchers have emphasized supervision practices as they relate to BCBAs and trainees. However, what type of work is occurring in this area, such as empirical intervention studies or provision of supervisory recommendations through discussion-style articles, needs to be clarified. Therefore, we conducted the first and most comprehensive systematic review of supervision research related to BCBAs and trainees. Results indicated that most of the articles and work pertaining to BCBA supervision are discussion-style articles, with several survey studies and few empirical intervention studies. We discuss implications and areas for future supervision research. Supplementary Information: The online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s40617-023-00805-0.

ABSTRACT

Under the background of peaking carbon neutralization, it is a significant and fresh proposition to investigate the economic benefits of carbon disclosure (CD) in the Chinese market. By taking all listed enterprises as a sample (2009-2020), this paper firstly empirically analyzes the impact of enterprise CD on stock price synchronization and the indispensable role played by analysts in between. The results indicate that (1) enterprise CD is conducive to reduce stock price synchronization, confirming the accuracy of government mandatory CD system and the effectiveness of voluntary enterprise CD project. (2) Analysts play the role of "information scouts" and have a mediating effect between enterprise CD and stock price synchronization. (3) Analysts play the role of "analysis commentators," and analyst rating has a moderating effect between enterprise CD and stock price synchronization. (4) In further analysis, analysts will mobilize investors' positive investment sentiment, but only when the analyst rating upgrades or remains unchanged.

ABSTRACT

The present study investigated the impact of corporate violations on corporate charitable donation behavior and the heterogeneity influences played by corporate ownership type, analyst attention and information transparency. This study analyzed 3,715 non-financial companies in Chinese A-shares from 2011 to 2020 using panel data. The impact of corporate violations on corporate charitable donations was examined by using Ordinary Least Squares, instrumental variables two-stage least squares and propensity score matching method. Consequently, the following conclusions are presented. First, corporate violations are significantly positively correlated with the level of corporate charitable donations. Second, among the companies with high analyst attention, high information transparency, or non-state-owned nature, the positive impact of enterprise violations on charitable donations is greater. These findings suggest that charitable giving may be used by some businesses as an undesirable tool to conceal their irregularities. No study has been conducted regarding the influence of corporate violations on corporate charitable donations in China. This study is a pioneering study that seeks to give insights into the link between these variables in the context of China, which has practical implications for gaining insights into corporate charitable giving in China, as well as identifying and curbing "hypocritical" corporate charitable donation behavior.

ABSTRACT

There are an increasing number of studies on the effect of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) on performance of laying hens with inconsistent outcomes. This study, therefore, used a meta-analytic approach to examine the effect of cassava-based diets on feed intake (FI), feed conversion ratio (FCR) end production data such as hen day egg production (HDEP), egg weight (EW), egg mass (EM), Haugh unit (HU), shell weight (SW) and shell thickness (ST) in laying hens. Two hundred and three studies were identified in a search performed in PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar databases of which thirteen studies were suitable for the meta-analysis. Subgroup and meta-regression analyses were performed to explore the responses of laying hens to dietary cassava and sources of heterogeneity, respectively using the following moderators: study continent, cassava type, cassava processing methods, inclusion level, layer strain, feeding durations, number of layers and hen's age. Data were pooled using a random-effects model and statistical analyses were performed in OpenMEE software. Results show that cassava increased FI (mean difference MD = 0.97 g/d; 95% confidence intervals (CI) 0.05, 1.90) and reduced egg weight (MD = -0.72 g; 95% CI -1.26, -0.19) and SW (MD = -0.11 g; 95% CI -0.18, -0.04) when compared to control. Laying hens fed cassava diets had HDEP, FCR, EM, ST and HU values that compared favourably with the controls. Subgroup analysis demonstrated that inclusion of cassava at ≤ 25% in layer diets had no deleterious effects on measured outcomes taking cognizance of significant heterogeneity. However, meta-regression results showed that most of the sources of heterogeneity were explained by the studied moderators. In conclusion, ≤25% of cassava (CRM and CPM) can be included in layer diets without adverse effects on feed intake, feed conversion ratio and egg production characteristics, indicating that cassava has a very bright future as an energy source in the diets of laying hens.

ABSTRACT

The use of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC) feed additives to improve animal performance are on the increase; however, the results of the action of SC supplementation on goats performance indices are conflicting. Thus, the thrust of this meta-analysis was to examine the influence of dietary SC intervention on the growth performance, haemato-biochemical indices and ruminal fermentation characteristics of growing goats fed total mixed ration (TMR). The search conducted in Google Scholar, PubMed and Scopus databases using several keywords yielded 500 studies of which 16 full-text articles were utilised for study. Response variables were aggregated via a random-effects model. The results showed that goats fed SC experienced higher average daily gain (ADG) than the controls (as standardized mean difference, SMD = 2.14; 95% confidence interval, CI: 1.40 to 2.89). In converse, dietary SC intervention had a small impact on dry matter intake (DMI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR). Subgroup analysis demonstrated that SC type (active vs inactive) improved FCR and ADG in growing goats. Results suggested that SC preparation increased blood glucose, white blood cell (WBC), ruminal propionate and total volatile fatty acid levels. There is heterogeneity among the articles used in the study, and aspects of studied covariates explained the variation. In conclusion, this study indicated that dietary yeast can positively influence growth performance, haemato-biochemical indices, and rumen fermentation parameters of growing goats.
