ABSTRACT

Frank's sign (FS) refers to a diagonal skin fold between the tragus and the outer edge of the earlobe. FS has been identified as an independent variable in coronary artery disease (CAD). Young patients with FS and previous myocardial infarction are still rarely reported in clinical studies. We report the case of a 49-year-old male smoker and diabetic, with a history of myocardial infarction, who presented to the emergency department due to 2 h typical cardiac chest pain. His urgent electrocardiography (ECG) showed ST elevation, and cardiac biomarkers were elevated after admission. A diagonal earlobe crease (DELC) was observed in physical tests. The preliminary diagnosis considered acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Subsequently, acute coronary artery angiography demonstrated a slit-like contrast defect in the proximal right coronary artery (RCA), with stenosis and occlusion in the distal segment. The percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) was performed immediately. The patient's chest pain symptoms were relieved significantly after intervention. Our case indicates that FS should be highly regarded as a routine cardiovascular clinical examination, which can be effortlessly applied and be easily interpreted for screening to suspect the presence of ischemic heart disease. This may set strategies for primary screening in a younger population and prompt early diagnosis and treatment.

ABSTRACT

Calmodulin (CaM) is a ubiquitous, small cytosolic calcium (Ca2+)-binding sensor that plays a vital role in many cellular processes by binding and regulating the activity of over 300 protein targets. In cardiac muscle, CaM modulates directly or indirectly the activity of several proteins that play a key role in excitation-contraction coupling (ECC), such as ryanodine receptor type 2 (RyR2),  l-type Ca2+ (Cav1.2), sodium (NaV1.5) and potassium (KV7.1) channels. Many recent clinical and genetic studies have reported a series of CaM mutations in patients with life-threatening arrhythmogenic syndromes, such as long QT syndrome (LQTS) and catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT). We recently showed that four arrhythmogenic CaM mutations (N98I, D132E, D134H, and Q136P) significantly reduce the binding of CaM to RyR2. Herein, we investigate in vivo functional effects of these CaM mutations on the normal zebrafish embryonic heart function by microinjecting complementary RNA corresponding to CaMN98I, CaMD132E, CaMD134H, and CaMQ136P mutants. Expression of CaMD132E and CaMD134H mutants results in significant reduction of the zebrafish heart rate, mimicking a severe form of human bradycardia, whereas expression of CaMQ136P results in an increased heart rate mimicking human ventricular tachycardia. Moreover, analysis of cardiac ventricular rhythm revealed that the CaMD132E and CaMN98I zebrafish groups display an irregular pattern of heart beating and increased amplitude in comparison to the control groups. Furthermore, circular dichroism spectroscopy experiments using recombinant CaM proteins reveals a decreased structural stability of the four mutants compared to the wild-type CaM protein in the presence of Ca2+. Finally, Ca2+-binding studies indicates that all CaM mutations display reduced CaM Ca2+-binding affinities, with CaMD132E exhibiting the most prominent change. Our data suggest that CaM mutations can trigger different arrhythmogenic phenotypes through multiple and complex molecular mechanisms.

Background: Individuals with cardiac disease (CD) who are self-employed may experience ability limitations and especially intensive challenges and uncertainties. These challenges may cause demoralization and impaired well-being. Objectives: To examine: (a) whether work ability limitations are related to demoralization and well-being among self-employed people with CD; (b) rates of demoralization; and (c) how demoralization and intolerance of uncertainty (IU) are associated with well-being. Methods: The study involved 120 self-employed individuals with CD. The PROCESS macro was used to analyze mediation and moderation processes. Results: The prevalence of demoralization syndrome was 37.4%. Work ability-limitations were associated with higher demoralization levels. Demoralization was associated with well-being only among participants with high IU. Further, demoralization mediated the relationship between work ability limitations and well-being only for individuals with high IU. Conclusion: Encountering limitations among self-employed was associated with demoralization and lower levels of well-being, especially among those with high IU. In addition, demoralization syndrome is prevalent among individuals with CD in general. Early recognition and treatment of demoralization as a treatable psychological syndrome are essential for preventing its degeneration into more complex forms. In addition to uncertainty related to health, it is important to pay special attention to other sources of uncertainty.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Intervention for older patients with cardiac disease and subthreshold depression (StD) may be an effective strategy to prevent the development of major depressive disorder. The subliminal priming with supraliminal reward stimulation (SPSRS) website developed by us is an advanced intervention that can improve depressive symptoms in individuals with StD by presenting positive word stimuli in videos. However, its efficacy for treating depressive symptoms in older patients with cardiac disease and StD has not been investigated. Here, we present a pilot randomized controlled trial protocol to investigate the preliminary efficacy of an intervention for older patients with cardiac disease with StD. METHODS: The study was designed as a single-center, open-label, pilot, randomized, parallel-group trial. The participants will include 30 older patients with cardiac disease and StD who are hospitalized in acute wards. The Experimental group received the SPSRS intervention (video viewing with positive word stimuli; n = 15) and the Control group will receive the YouTube intervention (video viewing without positive word stimuli; n = 15). In both groups, the intervention will be administered for 10 min per day, five times per week for 1 week. The primary outcome will be the change in the scores on the Japanese version of the Beck Depression Inventory-II at 1 week after the baseline assessment. The secondary outcomes will be the changes in the Specific Activity Scale, New York Heart Association functional classification, as well as grip strength at 1 week after the baseline assessment. DISCUSSION: This pilot randomized controlled trial will be the first to evaluate the SPSRS intervention for depressive symptoms in older patients with cardiac disease and StD who are admitted to acute wards. The results will provide tentative indications regarding the impact of the intervention on depressive symptoms among older patients with cardiac disease and StD who are admitted to acute wards, and will contribute to the planning of a full-scale study. INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular diseases are a class of heart and blood vessel-related illnesses. In Sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia, preventable heart disease continues to be a significant factor, contrasting with its presence in developed nations. Therefore, the objective of the study was to assess the prevalence of death due to cardiac disease and its risk factors among heart patients in Ethiopia. METHODS: The current investigation included all cardiac patients who had cardiac surgery in the country between 2012 and 2023. A total of 1520 individuals were participated in the study. Data collection took place between February 2022 and January 2023. The study design was a retrospective cohort since the study track back patients' chart since 2012. Machine learning algorithms were applied for data analysis. For machine learning algorithms comparison, lift and AUC was applied. RESULTS: From all possible algorithms, logistic algorithm at 90%/10% was the best fit since it produces the maximum AUC value. In addition, based on the lift value of 3.33, it can be concluded that the logistic regression algorithm was performing well and providing substantial improvement over random selection. From the logistic regression machine learning algorithms, age, saturated oxygen, ejection fraction, duration of cardiac center stays after surgery, waiting time to surgery, hemoglobin, and creatinine were significant predictors of death. CONCLUSION: Some of the predictors for the death of cardiac disease patients are identified as such special attention should be given to aged patients, for patients waiting for long periods of time to get surgery, lower saturated oxygen, higher creatinine value, lower ejection fraction and for patients with lower hemoglobin values.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Radiographic assessment of the intrathoracic caudal vena cava (CVC) is commonly used to evaluate hemodynamic status in veterinary patients without and with pulmonary, pericardial, or right-sided cardiac diseases. Many of these patients are now commonly evaluated with computed tomography (CT) in both emergency and referral settings. Traditional radiographic ratios in dogs, particularly the CVC height/aorta height (CVC/Ao) ratio, are often extrapolated to CT in order to determine if the CVC is normal in size. OBJECTIVES: The first goal of this retrospective study was to create an objective measurement method to evaluate the size of the CVC via CT. The second goal was to report normal CVC ratio values in both sagittal and transverse CT images. METHODS: The traditional lateral radiographic CVC ratios were extrapolated to similar ratios obtained from sagittal CT images in stable, sedated adult canine patients without known cardiac or pulmonary disease. Additionally, new methods of canine CVC ratios using transverse CT images were defined using vessel height and area. Mean, standard deviation, and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of the CVC ratios in transverse and sagittal CT images were calculated to determine normal reference ranges. RESULTS: Ratio agreement from observers of different skill levels was moderate to excellent. Sagittal CT CVC/Ao mean was 1.07 ± 0.17 with a CI of 0.71.42. The mean and CI of transverse CT CVC/Ao height and area were 1.14 ± 0.27 and 0.781.44 and 1.36 ± 0.59 and 0.641.94, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Application of normal sagittal and transverse CT ratio values in canine patients with and without hypotension, pulmonary, pericardial, or right-sided cardiac diseases is necessary to determine the clinical usefulness of these ratios.

ABSTRACT

During mammalian heart development, the clustered genes encoding peptide hormones, Natriuretic Peptide A (NPPA; ANP) and B (NPPB; BNP), are transcriptionally co-regulated and co-expressed predominately in the atrial and ventricular trabecular cardiomyocytes. After birth, expression of NPPA and a natural antisense transcript NPPA-AS1 becomes restricted to the atrial cardiomyocytes. Both NPPA and NPPB are induced by cardiac stress and serve as markers for cardiovascular dysfunction or injury. NPPB gene products are extensively used as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for various cardiovascular disorders. Membrane-localized guanylyl cyclase receptors on many cell types throughout the body mediate the signaling of the natriuretic peptide ligands through the generation of intracellular cGMP, which interacts with and modulates the activity of cGMP-activated kinase and other enzymes and ion channels. The natriuretic peptide system plays a fundamental role in cardio-renal homeostasis, and its potent diuretic and vasodilatory effects provide compensatory mechanisms in cardiac pathophysiological conditions and heart failure. In addition, both peptides, but also CNP, have important intracardiac actions during heart development and homeostasis independent of the systemic functions. Exploration of the intracardiac functions may provide new leads for the therapeutic utility of natriuretic peptide-mediated signaling in heart diseases and rhythm disorders. Here, we review recent insights into the regulation of expression and intracardiac functions of NPPA and NPPB during heart development, homeostasis, and disease.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Identifying whether experienced symptom burden in individuals with medical predisposition indicates somatic symptom disorder (SSD) is challenging, given the high overlap in the phenomenology of symptoms within this group. This study aimed to enhance understanding SSD in individuals at risk for heart failure. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional data from the Hamburg City Health Study was analyzed including randomly selected individuals from the general population of Hamburg, Germany recruited from February 2016 to November 2018. SSD symptoms assessed with the Somatic Symptom Scale-8 and the Somatic Symptom Disorder-12 scale were categorized by applying cluster analysis including 412 individuals having at least 5% risk for heart failure-related hospitalization within the next ten years. Clusters were compared for biomedical and psychological factors using ANOVA and chi-square tests. Linear regressions, adjusting for sociodemographic, biomedical, and psychological factors, explored associations between clusters with general practitioner visits and quality of life. RESULTS: Three clusters emerged: none (n = 215; 43% female), moderate (n = 151; 48% female), and severe (n = 46; 54% female) SSD symptom burden. The SSS-8 mean sum scores were 3.4 (SD = 2.7) for no, 6.4 (SD = 3.4) for moderate, and 12.4 (SD = 3.7) for severe SSD symptom burden. The SSD-12 mean sum scores were 3.1 (SD = 2.6) for no, 12.2 (SD = 4.2) for moderate, and 23.5 (SD = 6.7) for severe SSD symptom burden. Higher SSD symptom burden correlated with biomedical factors (having diabetes: p = .005 and dyspnea: p ≤ .001) and increased psychological burden (depression severity: p ≤ .001; anxiety severity: p ≤ .001), irrespective of heart failure risk (p = .202). Increased SSD symptoms were associated with more general practitioner visits (ß = 0.172; p = .002) and decreased physical quality of life (ß = -0.417; p ≤ .001). CONCLUSION: Biomedical factors appear relevant in characterizing individuals at risk for heart failure, while psychological factors affect SSD symptom experience. Understanding SSD symptom diversity and addressing subgroup needs could prove beneficial.

ABSTRACT

The Ketogenic Diet (KD) is a dietary regimen that is low in carbohydrates, high in fats, and contains adequate protein. It is designed to mimic the metabolic state of fasting. This diet triggers the production of ketone bodies through a process known as ketosis. The primary objective of KD is to induce and sustain ketosis, which has been associated with numerous health benefits. Recent research has uncovered promising therapeutic potential for KD in the treatment of various diseases. This includes evidence of its effectiveness as a dietary strategy for managing intractable epilepsy, a form of epilepsy that is resistant to medication. We are currently assessing the efficacy and safety of KD through laboratory and clinical studies. This review focuses on the anti-inflammatory properties of the KD and its potential benefits for neurological disorders and the gut-brain axis. We also explore the existing literature on the potential effects of KD on cardiac health. Our aim is to provide a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge in these areas. Given the encouraging preliminary evidence of its therapeutic effects and the growing understanding of its mechanisms of action, randomized controlled trials are warranted to further explore the rationale behind the clinical use of KD. These trials will ultimately enhance our understanding of how KD functions and its potential benefits for various health conditions. We hope that our research will contribute to the body of knowledge in this field and provide valuable insights for future studies.

ABSTRACT

Implantable cardiac pacemakers are crucial therapeutic tools for managing various cardiac conditions. For effective pacing, electrodes should exhibit flexibility, deformability, biocompatibility, and high conductivity/capacitance. Laser-induced graphene (LIG) shows promise due to its exceptional electrical and electrochemical properties. However, the fragility of LIG and the non-stretchability of polyimide substrates pose challenges when interfacing with the beating heart. Here, we present a simple method for fabricating robust, flexible, and stretchable bioelectronic interfaces by transferring LIG via water-responsive, nonswellable polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gels. PVA solution penetrates the porous structure of LIG and solidifies into PVA xerogel as the solvent evaporates. The robust PVA xerogel enables the smooth transfer of LIG and prevents stretching of the LIG network during this process, which helps maintain its conductivity. When hydrated, the xerogel becomes a stable, nonswellable hydrogel. This gives the LIG-PVA hydrogel (LIG-PVA-H) composites with excellent conductivity (119.7 ± 4.3Ω sq-1), high stretchability (up to 420%), reliability (cyclic stretch under 15% strain, with ∼ 1-time resistance increase), and good stability in phosphate buffered saline. The LIG-PVA-H composites were used as biointerfaces for electrocardiogram signal recording and electrical pacing on rat hearts ex vivo and in vivo, using commercial setups and a custom-built implantable wireless device. This work expands the application of LIG in bioelectronic interfaces and facilitates the development of electrotherapy for cardiac diseases.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Deep learning (DL) is a new technology that can assist prenatal ultrasound (US) in the detection of congenital heart disease (CHD) at the prenatal stage. Hence, an economic-epidemiologic evaluation (aka Cost-Utility Analysis) is required to assist policymakers in deciding whether to adopt the new technology. METHODS: The incremental cost-utility ratios (CUR), of adding DL assisted ultrasound (DL-US) to the current provision of US plus pulse oximetry (POX), was calculated by building a spreadsheet model that integrated demographic, economic epidemiological, health service utilization, screening performance, survival and lifetime quality of life data based on the standard formula: CUR = Increase in Intervention Costs - Decrease in Treatment costs Averted QALY losses of adding DL to US & POX US screening data were based on real-world operational routine reports (as opposed to research studies). The DL screening cost of 145 USD was based on Israeli US costs plus 20.54 USD for reading and recording screens. RESULTS: The addition of DL assisted US, which is associated with increased sensitivity (95% vs 58.1%), resulted in far fewer undiagnosed infants (16 vs 102 [or 2.9% vs 15.4%] of the 560 and 659 births, respectively). Adoption of DL-US will add 1,204 QALYs. with increased screening costs 22.5 million USD largely offset by decreased treatment costs (20.4 million USD). Therefore, the new DL-US technology is considered "very cost-effective", costing only 1,720 USD per QALY. For most performance combinations (sensitivity > 80%, specificity > 90%), the adoption of DL-US is either cost effective or very cost effective. For specificities greater than 98% (with sensitivities above 94%), DL-US (& POX) is said to "dominate" US (& POX) by providing more QALYs at a lower cost. CONCLUSION: Our exploratory CUA calculations indicate the feasibility of DL-US as being at least cost-effective.

ABSTRACT

Major advancements in human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC) technology over recent years have yielded valuable tools for cardiovascular research. Multi-cell type 3-dimensional (3D) cardiac models in particular, are providing complementary approaches to animal studies that are better representatives than simple 2-dimensional (2D) cultures of differentiated hPSCs. These human 3D cardiac models can be broadly divided into two categories; namely those generated through aggregating pre-differentiated cells and those that form self-organizing structures during their in vitro differentiation from hPSCs. These models can either replicate aspects of cardiac development or enable the examination of interactions among constituent cell types, with some of these models showing increased maturity compared with 2D systems. Both groups have already emerged as physiologically relevant pre-clinical platforms for studying heart disease mechanisms, exhibiting key functional attributes of the human heart. In this review, we describe the different cardiac organoid models derived from hPSCs, their generation methods, applications in cardiovascular disease research and use in drug screening. We also address their current limitations and challenges as pre-clinical testing platforms and propose potential improvements to enhance their efficacy in cardiac drug discovery.

ABSTRACT

Pericardial mesothelioma (PM) is rare with only 200 cases recorded, and a post-mortem prevalence of <0.0022%. It is the third most common cardiac/pericardial tumour, behind angiosarcoma and rhabdomyosarcoma. PM incidence increases with age, typically incidentally diagnosed between 50 and 70 years, with a 3:1 male predominance. Occasional PM can cause chest pain, dyspnoea, cough and even dysphagia. PMs are often misdiagnosed with only 25% of cases being antemortem diagnoses. Unlike pleural mesothelioma, the link between asbestos exposure and malignancy is less convincing, with only 20% of cases having known exposure. 6 There are three histological types: epithelioid, fibrous (spindle cell), and biphasic (mixed). The average life-expectancy post diagnosis is 3-10 months. Due to the heterogeneity of the presentation and rarity there is no standardized management algorithm, and the diagnostic imaging or laboratory investigations are scarcely described. We are presenting one of the cases diagnosed in our unit here in the Gold Coast.

Objectives: Chest pain is a common chief complaint in pediatric emergency departments (EDs). Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) has been shown to increase the risk of cardiac disease. It remains unclear how COVID-19 changed how pediatric emergency clinicians approach patients presenting with chest pain. The goal of this study was to characterize the diagnostic testing for chest pain in a pediatric ED before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This was a retrospective study of children between the ages of 2-17 years presenting to a pediatric ED from 1/1/2018-2/29/2020 (Pre-COVID-19) and 3/1/2020-4/30/2022 (COVID-19) with chest pain. We excluded patients with a previous history of cardiac disease. Results: Of the 10,721 encounters during the study period, 5,692 occurred before and 5,029 during COVID-19. Patient demographics showed minor differences by age, weight, race and ethnicity. ED encounters for chest pain consisted of an average of 18% more imaging studies during COVID-19, including 14% more EKGs and 11% more chest x-rays, with no difference in the number of echocardiograms. Compared to Pre-COVID-19, 100% more diagnostic tests were ordered during COVID-19, including cardiac markers Troponin I (p < 0.001) and BNP (p < 0.001). During COVID-19, 1.1% of patients had a cardiac etiology of chest pain compared with 0.7% before COVID-19 (p = 0.03). Conclusions: During COVID-19, pediatric patients with chest pain underwent more diagnostic testing compared to Pre-COVID-19. This may be due to higher patient acuity, emergence of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) that necessitated more extensive testing and possible changes in ED clinician behavior during COVID-19.

Objective: Anterior mitral anular calcification, particularly in radiation heart disease, and previous valve replacement with destroyed intervalvular fibrosa are challenging for prosthesis sizing and placement. The Commando procedure with intervalvular fibrosa reconstruction permits double-valve replacement in these challenging conditions. We referenced outcomes after Commando procedures to standard double-valve replacements. Methods: From January 2011 to January 2022, 129 Commando procedures and 1191 aortic and mitral double-valve replacements were performed at the Cleveland Clinic, excluding endocarditis. Reasons for the Commando were severe calcification after radiation (n = 67), without radiation (n = 43), and others (n = 19). Commando procedures were referenced to a subset of double-valve replacements using balancing-score methods (109 pairs). Results: Between balanced groups, Commando versus double-valve replacement had higher total calcium scores (median 6140 vs 2680 HU, P = .03). Hospital outcomes were similar, including operative mortality (12/11% vs 8/7.3%, P = .35) and reoperation for bleeding (9/8.3% vs 5/4.6%, P = .28). Survival and freedom from reoperation at 5 years were 54% versus 67% (P = .33) and 87% versus 100% (P = .04), respectively. Higher calcium score was associated with lower survival after double-valve replacement but not after the Commando. The Commando procedure had lower aortic valve mean gradients at 4 years (9.4 vs 11 mm Hg, P = .04). After Commando procedures for calcification, 5-year survival was 60% and 59% with and without radiation, respectively (P = .47). Conclusions: The Commando procedure with reconstruction of the intervalvular fibrosa destroyed by mitral anular calcification, radiation, or previous surgery demonstrates acceptable outcomes similar to standard double-valve replacement. More experience and long-term outcomes are required to refine patient selection for and application of the Commando approach.

Cardiac amyloidosis can be grouped into two main categories: immunoglobulin light chain (AL) and transthyretin (hATTR or hereditary and ATTRwt or wild type). Cardiac infiltration of misfolded proteins can lead to significant infiltrative processes and subsequent heart failure. Diagnosis of ATTRwt heavily relies on clinical suspicion, as it typically appears later in life and is limited to the heart. It is routinely reported that ATTRwt significantly affects males more than females; however, older patients diagnosed with ATTRwt and those diagnosed at autopsy are significantly more likely to be female. Earlier, a more precise diagnosis in females could detect disease at an earlier stage and expedite treatment.

Background/Objectives: Patient care in Cardiac Intensive Care Units (CICU) has evolved but data on patient characteristics and outcomes are sparse. This retrospective observational study aimed to define clinical characteristics and risk factors of CICU patients, their in-hospital and 30-day mortality, and compare it with established risk scores. Methods: Consecutive patients (n = 294, mean age 70 years, 74% males) hospitalized within 15 months were studied; APACHE II, EHMRG, GWTG-HF, and GRACE II were calculated on admission. Results: Most patients were admitted for ACS (48.3%) and acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) (31.3%). Median duration of hospitalization was 2 days (IQR = 1, 4). In-hospital infection occurred in 20%, 18% needed mechanical ventilation, 10% renal replacement therapy and 4% percutaneous ventricular assist devices (33%, 29%, 20% and 4%, respectively, for ADHF). In-hospital and 30-day mortality was 18% and 11% for all patients (29% and 23%, respectively, for ADHF). Established scores (especially APACHE II) had a good diagnostic accuracy (area under the curve-AUC). In univariate and multivariate analyses in-hospital intubation and infection, history of coronary artery disease, hypotension, uremia and hypoxemia on admission were the most important risk factors. Based on these, a proposed new score showed a diagnostic accuracy of 0.954 (AUC) for in-hospital mortality, outperforming previous scores. Conclusions: Patients are admitted mainly with ACS or ADHF, the latter with worse prognosis. Several patients need advanced support; intubation and infections adversely affect prognosis. Established scores predict mortality satisfactorily, but larger studies are needed to develop CICU-directed scores to identify risk factors, improve prediction, guide treatment and staff training.

Cardiac ATP production is tightly regulated in order to satisfy the evolving energetic requirements imposed by different cues during health and pathological conditions. In order to sustain high ATP production rates, cardiac cells are endowed with a vast mitochondrial network that is essentially acquired during the perinatal period. Nevertheless, adult cardiac cells also adapt their mitochondrial mass and oxidative function to changes in energy demand and substrate availability by fine-tuning the pathways and mitochondrial machinery involved in energy production. The reliance of cardiac cells on mitochondrial metabolism makes them particularly sensitive to alterations in proper mitochondrial function, so that deficiency in energy production underlies or precipitates the development of heart diseases. Mitochondrial biogenesis is a complex process fundamentally controlled at the transcriptional level by a network of transcription factors and co-regulators, sometimes with partially redundant functions, that ensure adequate energy supply to the working heart. Novel uncovered regulators, such as RIP140, PERM1, MED1 or BRD4 have been recently shown to modulate or facilitate the transcriptional activity of the PGC-1s/ERRs/PPARs regulatory axis, allowing cardiomyocytes to adapt to a variety of physiological or pathological situations requiring different energy provision. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge on the mechanisms that regulate cardiac mitochondrial biogenesis, highlighting the recent discoveries of new transcriptional regulators and describing the experimental models that have provided solid evidence of the relevant contribution of these factors to cardiac function in health and disease.
