ABSTRACT

This article summarizes and discusses the collaborative effects of acupuncture and medication in treatment, including four aspects, named "acupuncture synergizing the effects of medication", "medication advancing the effects of acupuncture", "coordination of acupuncture and medication", and "antagonism of acupuncture and medication". Regarding "acupuncture synergizing the effects of medication", the actions of acupuncture are predominant, which affects the absorption and metabolism of drugs in the body, increases drug concentration in blood, enhances the targeting effect of drugs, guides meridian tropism, alleviates the drug dose and adverse reactions, avoids the first pass effect and accelerates the drug bioavailability. As for "medication advancing the effects of acupuncture", the synergistic effect of acupuncture is obtained by medication, besides, the medication itself may supplement the drug property to the needles during acupuncture pretreatment so as to increase the therapeutic effect. In terms of "coordination of acupuncture and medication", and "antagonism of acupuncture and medication", there are the underlying co-effects of acupuncture and medication in the body, and the action targets may be same or different between them, thus, it needs to be further explored.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical efficacy of acupuncture, Chinese medication and combination of acupuncture and medication in the treatment of dry eye complicated with computer vision syndrome (CVS). METHODS: A total of 152 patients with dry eye complicated with CVS were randomly divided into an acupuncture-medication group (38 cases, 1 case was removed), an acupuncture group (38 cases, 1 case dropped off), a Chinese medication group (38 cases, 1 case was removed), and a western medication group (38 cases, 1 case dropped off). In the western medication group, sodium hyaluronate eye drop combined with esculin and digitalis glycosides eye drop were used. In the acupuncture group, acupuncture was applied at bilateral Taiyang (EX-HN 5), Cuanzhu (BL 2), Fengchi (GB 20), Qimen (LR 14) , and Hegu (LI 4) etc., once a day. In the Chinese medication group, Yiqi Congming decoction formula ganule was given orally, one dose a day. In the acupuncture-medication group, acupuncture combined with Yiqi Congming decoction formula granule were used. All groups were treated for 14 d. The non-invasive first tear film break-up time (NIBUT f), non-invasive average tear film break-up time (NIBUT av), tear meniscus height (TMH), ocular surface disease index (OSDI) score, and CVS symptom score were compared between the patients of each group before and after treatment. RESULTS: After treatment, the NIBUT f, NIBUT av, and TMH were increased compared with those before treatment in the patients of the 4 groups (P<0.01); the NIBUT f and NIBUT av in the acupuncture-medication group and the acupuncture group were higher than those in the Chinese medication group and the western medication group (P<0.05), and the TMH in the acupuncture-medication group and the Chinese medication group were higher than those in the acupuncture group and the western medication group (P<0.05). After treatment, the OSDI scores, the various scores and total scores of CVS (except for head symptom score in the western medication group) were decreased compared with those before treatment in the patients of the 4 groups (P<0.01). The OSDI score, total score, eye symptom score, and body symptom score of CVS in the acupuncture-medication group were lower than those in the acupuncture group, the Chinese medication group, and the western medication group (P<0.01, P<0.05), the head symptom score of the acupuncture-medication group was lower than that in the western medication group (P<0.05), and the CVS physical symptom scores and mental cognitive symptom scores of the acupuncture-medication group and the acupuncture group were lower than those in the Chinese medication group and the western medication group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture has advantages in improving NIBUT f, NIBUT av, and CVS physical symptoms and cognitive symptoms, and the Chinese medication has advantage in improving TMH. The combination of acupuncture and Chinese medication has better effects compared with monotherapy.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To observe the hypoglycemic effect of electroacupuncture (EA) at "Tianshu" (ST 25) combined with metformin on rats with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) as well as its effect on expression of adenosine monophosphate activated protein kinase (AMPK) in liver and pancreas. METHODS: Thirty-six male SD rats were randomly divided into a blank group (6 rats) and a model establishing group (30 rats). The rats in the model establishing group were fed with high-fat diet and treated with intraperitoneal injection of low-dose streptozotocin (STZ) to establish T2DM model. The rats with successful model establishment were randomly divided into a model group, a control group, a metformin group, an EA group and a combination group, 6 rats in each group. The rats in the EA group were treated with EA at "Tianshu" (ST 25), dense-disperse wave, 2 Hz/15 Hz in frequency and 2 mA in current intensity, 20 min each time. The rats in the metformin group were treated with intragastric administration of metformin (190 mg/kg) dissolved in 0.9% sodium chloride solution (2 mL/kg). The rats in the combination group were treated with EA at "Tianshu" (ST 25) and intragastric administration of metformin. The rats in the control group were treated with intragastric administration of 0.9% sodium chloride solution with the same dose. All the treatments were given once a day for 5 weeks. After the intervention, the body mass and random blood glucose were detected; the serum insulin level was detected by ELISA; the expression of AMPK and phosphorylated adenosine monophosphate activated protein kinase (p-AMPK) in liver and pancreas was detected by Western blot method; the expression of protein gene product 9.5 (PGP9.5) was detected by immunofluorescence. RESULTS: ①Compared with the blank group, the body mass in the model group was decreased (P<0.05); compared with the model group, the body mass in the EA group and the combination group was decreased (P<0.05); the body mass in the EA group and the combination group was lower than the metformin group (P<0.05). Compared with the blank group, the random blood glucose in the model group was increased (P<0.01); compared with the model group, the random blood glucose in the metformin group, the EA group and the combination group was decreased (P<0.01). The random blood glucose in the combination group was lower than the metformin group and the EA group (P<0.05). ②Compared with the blank group, the insulin level in the model group was decreased (P<0.05); compared with the model group, the insulin level in the metformin group, the EA group and the combination group was all increased (P<0.05). The insulin level in the combination group was higher than the metformin group and the EA group (P<0.05). ③Compared with the blank group, the protein expression of AMPK and p-AMPK in liver tissue was decreased (P<0.05), and the protein expression of AMPK and p-AMPK in pancreatic tissue was increased (P<0.05) in the model group. Compared with the model group, the protein expression of AMPK and p-AMPK in liver tissue in the metformin group, the EA group and the combination group was increased (P<0.05, P<0.01); the protein expression of AMPK in pancreatic tissue in the metformin group was increased (P<0.05); the protein expression of AMPK in pancreatic tissue in the EA group and the combination group was decreased (P<0.05); the protein expression of p-AMPK in pancreatic tissue in the metformin group, the EA group and the combination group was decreased (P<0.05). The protein expression of AMPK and p-AMPK in liver tissue in the combination group was higher than that in the metformin group and the EA group (P<0.05); the protein expression of AMPK in pancreatic tissue in the EA group and the combination group was less than that in the metformin group (P<0.05), and the expression of p-AMPK protein in pancreatic tissue in the combination group was less than that in the metformin group and the EA group (P<0.05). ④Compared with the blank group, the expression of PGP9.5 in pancreatic tissue in the model group was increased (P<0.01); compared with the model group, the expression of PGP9.5 in pancreatic tissue in the metformin group, the EA group and the combination group was decreased (P<0.05, P<0.01). The expression of PGP9.5 in pancreatic tissue in the EA group was lower than the metformin group and the combination group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Electroacupuncture at "Tianshu" (ST 25) could promote the effect of metformin on activating AMPK in liver tissue of T2DM rats, improve the negative effect of metformin on AMPK in pancreatic tissue, and enhance the hypoglycemic effect of metformin. The mechanism may be related to the inhibition of pancreatic intrinsic nervous system.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanism of electroacupuncture (EA) with the involvement of sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase2a (SERCA2a)/phospholamban (PLB) on the synergistic and attenuated effect of aconitine for heart failure. METHODS: Thirty SPF-ranked SD rats were randomly divided into a control group, a model group, an EA group, an aconitine group and an EA plus aconitine group, with 6 rats in each group. The rat model of acute heart failure was established by infusion of high-dose propranolol hydrochloride solution into the right femoral vein. After stabilized for 10 min in the modeled rats, EA was exerted at "Neiguan" (PC 6), with disperse-dense wave, 2 Hz/15 Hz in frequency, 3 mA in intensity, for 30 min in the EA group and the EA plus aconitine group; aconitine solution (10 µg/kg) was injected from the left femoral veins in the rats in the aconitine group and the EA plus aconitine group. Hemodynamic indexes such as the left ventricular systolic pressure (LVSP) and the maximum rate of increase/decrease of left ventricular pressure (±dp/dtmax) were detected and arrhythmia types were observed and scored. SERCA2a protein and PLB protein expressions in left ventricular myocardial tissue of rats were detected by multiplex fluorescence Western blot. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, LVSP and ±dp/dtmax all were decreased after modeling and at each time point after intervention in the model group (P<0.01). Compared with the model group, ±dp/dtmax was increased in the aconitine group and the EA group at 1 min after intervention (P<0.01, P<0.05), +dp/dtmax was increased at 10 to 60 min after intervention in the aconitine group and at 20 to 60 min after intervention in the EA group (P<0.01, P<0.05), LVSP was increased at 1 min after intervention in the EA group (P<0.01), while LVSP and ±dp/dtmax were all increased at 1 to 60 min after intervention in the EA plus aconitine group (P<0.01, P<0.05). Compared with the aconitine group, LVSP and +dp/dtmax were increased at 1 min after intervention in the EA group (P<0.01, P<0.05), LVSP and ±dp/dtmax at 1 min after intervention while +dp/dtmax at 20 to 60 min after intervention were all increased in the EA plus aconitine group (P<0.01, P<0.05). Compared with the EA group, +dp/dtmax was higher at 10 to 60 min after intervention in the EA plus aconitine group (P<0.01). Compared with the model group, arrhythmia score was higher in the aconitine group (P<0.01). Compared with the aconitine group, arrhythmia score was lower in the EA group and the EA plus aconitine group (P<0.01). As compared with the control group, the expression of SERCA2a protein in the left ventricular cardiomyocytes was decreased (P<0.01), while the expression of PLB protein was increased in the model group (P<0.01). Compared with the model group, the expression of SERCA2a protein was increased in both the EA group and the EA plus aconitine group (P<0.05, P<0.01), and PLB protein expression was decreased in each intervention group respectively (P<0.01, P<0.05). As compared with the EA group and the aconitine group, the expression of SERCA2a protein was increased and the expression of PLB protein was decreased in the EA plus aconitine group separately (P<0.05, P<0.01). CONCLUSION: The intervention with electroacupuncture achieves the synergism/ attenuation effect of aconitine for the improvements in heart failure probably by up-regulating the expression of SERCA2a and down-regulating the expression of PLB in myocardial tissue.

ABSTRACT

Professor LAI Xin-sheng believes that allergic rhinitis is mainly caused by deficiency of lung-spleen-kidney, combined with the attack of external pathogens, especially wind pathogens, which invade nasal orifices. Thus, three principles are established: syndrome differentiation and treatment, internal and external coherence, strengthening the root to eliminate pathogenic factors. For clinical practice, professor LAI proposes the original tongyuan acupuncture which takes the conception vessel and governor vessel as the general principles, takes zangfu syndrome differentiation as core, and takes regulating yin and yang as the major method. This acupuncture method integrates spirit and yuan, bases on verified method and acupoint, combines acupuncture and medication, and achieves satisfactory results.

ABSTRACT

The combination of acupuncture and medication is not the simple adding of the two treatments, but identifying the etiology and pathogenesis behind the disease at first, followed dynamic integration of different therapies according to the characteristics of acupuncture-moxibustion and medication. Professor LI Zi-ping believes that a more comprehensive understanding based on multi-system syndrome differentiation is essential for lumbar disc herniation. In treatment, the pan-long needling technique combined with flying needling could regulate collaterals and adjust spirit; acupoint injection could transfer medication into acupoints; herb decoction could eliminate the pathogens and strengthen the root; the balanced cupping combined with exercise therapy could regulate tendons and prevent recurrence. The principle of the combination of acupuncture and medication could organically integrate the advantages of different therapies, so their effects can be enhanced or supplemented. This method has achieved superior effects in clinical treatment.

ABSTRACT

Professor LAI Xinsheng's experience of acupuncture combined with medication for epilepsy is summarized, which is explained from epilepsy's etiology and pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of acupuncture and medication, respectively. Besides, the theoretical foundation and use instruction of acupuncture technique "tong-yuan" for epilepsy are introduced. Professor LAI highly values the adherence to etiology and pathogenesis, pays attention to syndrome differentiation and searches for the primary disease cause. He proposes the wind, phlegm, stasis and deficiency are the pathogenesis of epilepsy, and points out acupuncture could be applied during attack stage and remittent stage, but electroacupuncture should be used with caution. Regulating spirit is the key for treating epilepsy. The combination of acupuncture and medication could regulate the governor vessel and guide qi to the origin, which have significant curative effect.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of acupuncture combined with Rule granule on breast tissue, prolactin(PRL) and prolactin receptor (PRLR) expression in rats with mammary gland hyperplasia (MGH), and to explore its action mechanism to provide reference for clinical treatment of MGH. METHODS: Fifty-five female SD rats were randomly divided into a blank group, a model group, an acupuncture group, a Rule granule group and a combination group. Except the blank group, the rats in the remaining groups were treated with combined stimulation of estrogenic and progestational hormone to establish MGH model. After model establishment, the rats in the acupuncture group were treated with acupuncture at Plan A of "Tianzong" (SI 11), "Ganshu" (BL 18), "Zusanli" (ST 36) and Plan B of "Wuyi" (ST 15), "Hegu" (LI 4), "Danzhong" (CV 17). Each plan was selected for one acupuncture treatment, and two plans were used alternately. The rats in the Rule granule group were treated with oral administration of granule, 3 mL per times. The rats in the combination group were treated with the same Rule granule, followed by acupuncture, once a day. After consecutive 30-day treatment, blood sample was collected from abdominal aorta; ELISA method was applied to measure the contents of PRL; the HE slice of mammary gland was observed under light microscope; the SABC immunohistochemical method was applied to measure the positive expression of PRLR. RESULTS: The morphology of breast tissue in the model group was consistent with MGH. Compared with the blank group, the serum PRL and the expression of PRLR were increased significantly in the model group (both P<0.01). Compared with the model group, the hyperplasia of mammary gland in each treatment group was improved, and serum PRL and expression of PRLR were significantly reduced (P<0.05, P<0.01), which were more significant in the combination group (both P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture, Rule granule and its combination could effectively treat MGH, which is likely to reduce the level of serum PRL and inhibit the binding of PRL to PRLR, as a result, the level of E2 is indirectly inhibited, and the hyperplastic mammary gland is recovered. Compared with acupuncture or Rule granule, the combination of both has better overall efficacy.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo observe the effects of acupuncture combined withgranule on breast tissue, prolactin(PRL) and prolactin receptor (PRLR) expression in rats with mammary gland hyperplasia (MGH), and to explore its action mechanism to provide reference for clinical treatment of MGH.

METHODSFifty-five female SD rats were randomly divided into a blank group, a model group, an acupuncture group, a Rule granule group and a combination group. The rats in the combination group were treated with the samegranule, followed by acupuncture, once a day. After consecutive 30-day treatment, blood sample was collected from abdominal aorta; ELISA method was applied to measure the contents of PRL; the HE slice of mammary gland was observed under light microscope; the SABC immunohistochemical method was applied to measure the positive expression of PRLR.

RESULTSThe morphology of breast tissue in the model group was consistent with MGH. Compared with the blank group, the serum PRL and the expression of PRLR were increased significantly in the model group (both<0.01). ABSTRACT

Objective We adopt acupuncture associating with TAX,to investigate the anti-cancer effect and mechanism. Methods 48 mice with inoculated Lewis Lung Carcinoma were divided randomly into 4 groups:model group, acupuncture group, medicine group, combination of acupuncture and medicine group.Growth state of the mice and change curve of tumour.Protein expression of apoptosis related factor p53 and Bc1-2 in tumour were observed by Western Blotting method. Results Acupuncture,TAX and the combination of acupuncture and TAX separately had anti-tumor effect, with the combination was the best and improve growth state of the mice.p53 and bc1-2 can be detected in four groups.Compared with model group, the expression of other groups was lower.Compared with acupuncture group and medicine group, the exprission of combination group of acupuncture and TAX was lower.Conclution Combination of acupuncture and TAX can prohibit p53 Mutant and decrease Bcl-2,which have co-operating effect.
