ABSTRACT

Seven hundred twenty cases of oral cavity lesions in dogs were diagnosed from 2015 to 2020 in Distrito Federal, Brazil. Four hundred thirty-two (60%) lesions were neoplastic, and 288 (40%) were non-neoplastic. Of the neoplasms, 229 (53%) were considered malignant and 203 (47%) benign, affecting mainly males, of 43 different breeds, with an average age of 9.4 years, mainly the gum and lip. Melanoma was the most (96/432, 22.2%) commonly diagnosed neoplasm, followed by peripheral odontogenic fibroma (68/432, 15.7%), papilloma (63/432, 14.5%) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) (56/432, 12.9%). Non-neoplastic lesions also affected males predominantly, from 41 different breeds, with an average age of 8.9 years, mainly in the gums, lip, and tongue. These lesions were diagnosed as inflammatory (230/288, 79.8%), hyperplastic (47/288, 16.3%) and other lesions (11/288, 3.8%).

ABSTRACT

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) collection in dogs with brain neoplasms (BN) may be associated with complications owing to increased intracranial pressure caused by expansive lesions. Although this procedure has been performed in dogs with BN, no data regarding complications after CSF tap in these animals is available. Thus, this retrospective study aimed to identify the rate and types of complications observed after CSF taps in dogs with BN. Thirty dogs with BN were included in the study. In 83% (25/30) of the cases, clinical recovery after CSF tap was considered normal, and in 17% (5/30) the recovery was abnormal. The main clinical and neurological signs observed in dogs with abnormal clinical recovery were apnea (5/5), absence of pupillary photomotor reflex (3/5), coma (2/5), and stupor (1/5). In 40% (2/5) of the dogs, herniation of the cerebellum through the foramen magnum was observed on necropsy. In conclusion, the rate of complications after CSF taps was 17%, and was characterized by apnea, absent pupillary photomotor reflex, altered level of consciousness, and encephalic herniation.

ABSTRACT

Background: Although testicular tumors commonly develop in the genital tract of dogs, only few studies have reportedabout metastatic testicular tumors in dogs to date. Therefore, the present study aimed to describe the gross, histopathological, and immunohistochemical findings in a dog with metastatic interstitial cell tumor.Case: A 6-year-old male Beagle underwent clinical examination due to enlargement of the left testicle and nodules inthe skin of the left inguinal region and of the scrotum. The left testicle was cryptorchid (inguinal), and the right testiclewas intrascrotal. Both testicles and affected skin fragments were surgically removed. The right testicle was normal insize and did not exhibit gross changes. However, the left testicular parenchyma had been completely replaced by a firm,grayish-to-white neoplastic mass with an irregular surface. The inguinal and scrotal skin fragments were thickened by theneoplastic masses. Histologically, the left testicular parenchyma was completely obliterated by a neoplastic mass consistingof round-to-oval and polygonal cells. The neoplastic cells generally had abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm with indistinctcell limits. The nuclei were round and small, with aggregated chromatin. However, some cells exhibited high degrees ofatypia and pleomorphism and large nuclei with granular chromatin. Mitotic figures were observed at high frequenciesof up to 11 per high-power field (400×). The mass in the left testicle was diagnosed as malignant interstitial cell tumor. The sections of the inguinal skin and scrotum presented with neoplastic cells similar to those observed in the left testicle, which is consistent with the metastasis of the malignant testicular interstitial cell tumor. On the basis of necropsy, multiple cutaneous and subcutaneous nodules were randomly distributed throughout the body, primarily in the prepuce, head, and limbs. Histological evaluations of the skin nodules...(AU)

ABSTRACT

Four of the five (80%) dogs were purebred and one (20%) had no defined breed. All dogs presented generalized lymphadenomegaly and splenomegaly, which included cases as multicentric lymphoma. At necropsy, the lymph nodes and the spleen demonstrated a nodular pattern at the cut surface, characterized by tens to hundreds of white nodules of variable size, multifocal or coalescing. On the natural surface of the spleen, often (4/5, 80%), there were myriads of white, multifocal or coalescing dots of varying sizes. In histopathology, the tumors were confirmed as follicular lymphomas. All cases were Grade III, two (40%) included as IIIa and three (60%) as IIIb. In one case (1/5, 20%), follicular lymphoma was considered as a IIIb variant of small centroblasts similar to the neoplastic lymphocytes seen in Burkitt's lymphoma. Lymphomas were validated as having origin in B cells through immunohistochemistry, using anti-CD20 antibody. The cases of follicular lymphomas described behaved aggressively and led the patients to death.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Hands and feet of dogs are commonly affected by neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions. These lesions may commonly present poor clinical or histopathological prognosis and amputation tends to be the treatment of choice. Previous studies regarding the prevalence and the clinicopathological aspects of digital changes in dogs have been performed abroad, with no similar investigations in Brazil. The aim of this manuscript was to perform a histopathological study to characterize hands and feet lesions of dogs from Brazil.Tissue samples from 105 tumor-like lesions of dogs hands and feet were used in this study. The samples came from three Brazilian veterinary diagnostic laboratories and were collected between 2003 and 2016. All specimens were fixed in 10% buffered formalin, and routinely processed for paraffin embedding and hematoxylin-eosin staining. Additionally, toluidine blue, Brown and Breen, periodic acid Schiff (PAS), Grocott Methenamine Silver (GMS) and Ziehl Neelsen were used in selected cases. Immunohistochemistry using anti-Leishmania spp., anti-CD117, anti-CD79, anti-CD3, anti-Melan A, anti-lysozyme, anti-Pancytokeratin AE1/AE3, and anti-vimentin antibodies were also performed. Neoplasia (62.9%) was the most frequently found lesion, followed by inflammation (19%), and other changes (18.1%). Among the neoplasms, 40.9% were mesenchymal, 39.4% epithelial, and 19.7% round cells. All round cells and most of the epithelial and mesenchymal neoplasms were malignant. There was no difference between males and females regarding neoplasia prevalence. Labrador Retriever, Schnauzer, Teckel, mongrel, German Shepherd, Rottweiler, and Pit Bull were the most frequently affected breeds. Fila Brasileiro (aka Brazilian Mastiff), Pit Bull and Schnauzer had higher incidence of mesenchymal, epithelial, and round cells neoplasms, respectively. Inflammation was more commonly observed in the Labrador Retriever and other changes were more commonly in Teckel, Labrador Retriever, and mongrel dogs. Medium age and weight were 8.4 years and 28.5 kg, respectively. Medium diameter of the tumor-like lesions was 2.5 cm and the neoplastic lesions presented higher averages. Lesions were mainly in yellow-coated dogs. Incisional biopsy samples (56.4%) and amputations (85.3%) were mostly from neoplastic cases. Right forelimb was the most affected limb, and digits were the main injured anatomic structures. Squamous cell carcinoma was the most (14.2%) commonly diagnosed neoplasm, followed by mast cell tumor (7.6%), melanoma (7.6%), and undifferentiated sarcoma (7.6%). In half of the inflammatory cases, the lesion was centered in hair follicle and surrounding dermis. The inflammatory infiltrate was predominantly piogranulomatous or lymphoplasmacytic. Follicular cyst, calcinosis circumscripta, and acrochordons were the main non neoplastic and non-inflammatory changes.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Primary pulmonary neoplasms are uncommon in veterinary medicine; but most frequently affected are dogs. It appears that the number of primary pulmonary neoplasms is increasing in companion animals, due to the increase in life expectancy, improvement of diagnostic techniques and greater contact with air pollutants. This study was realized to identify, analyze the frequency, and to characterize pathological and immunohistochemical findings of primary pulmonary neoplasms in dogs of the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. From January 2003 to June 2016, 6,037 necropsies were performed and in 36 of them primary pulmonary neoplasm was found. The most frequent neoplasm in this study was papillary adenocarcinoma (30.5%) followed by lepidic adenocarcinoma (22.2%). The age of affected dogs ranged from 4 to 16 years, with a mean of 11 years. The frequency of male dogs (63.9%) prevailed over females (36.1%). Through immunohistochemical evaluation all epithelial neoplasms were positive for pancytokeratin, 70.6% were positive for thyroid-1 transcription factor and 23.5% had co-expression of pancytokeratin and vimentin. Two mesenchymal tumors showed immunostaining for vimentin and S-100, were negative for smooth-muscle actin and melan-A immunohistochemistry and Masson's trichrome histochemical technique and were diagnosed as malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, rarely found as primary lung tumor in animals. If one has difficulty to establish a diagnosis only through routine histological examination, it is necessary to emphasize the importance of the immunohistochemical technique for the diagnosis of primary pulmonary neoplasms in dogs.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Hands and feet of dogs are commonly affected by neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions. Follicular cyst, calcinosis circumscripta, and acrochordons were the main non neoplastic and non-inflammatory changes.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Primary pulmonary neoplasms are uncommon in veterinary medicine; but most frequently affected are dogs. Two mesenchymal tumors showed immunostaining for vimentin and S-100, were negative for smooth-muscle actin and melan-A immunohistochemistry and Massons trichrome histochemical technique and were diagnosed as malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, rarely found as primary lung tumor in animals. If one has difficulty to establish a diagnosis only through routine histological examination, it is necessary to emphasize the importance of the immunohistochemical technique for the diagnosis of primary pulmonary neoplasms in dogs.

Infectious diseases were observed in 59.60% (211/354) of cases representing the main cause of neurological disorders; 53% of the cases (186/354) were represented by viral diseases; 3.11% (11/354) were of parasitic etiology, 2.54% (9/354) were caused by bacteria and 1.41% (5/354) by fungi. Physical agents represented the second most important cause of CNS disorders with 9.89% (35/354) and tumors third cause with 5.93% (21/354). Other uncommon observed disorders were metabolic changes secondary to liver or kidney failure, accounting for 2.54% (9/354). Rare cases of congenital hydrocephalus were observed, 1.41% (5/354). The cases of neurological manifestations associated with vascular, degenerative and inflammatory noninfectious lesions, for many of which were specific cause was not established accounted for 4.24% (15/354); they were within the following disease categories: ischemic and hemorrhagic infarcts (6/15), vasculitis fibrinoide necrosis (5/15), intervertebral disc disease (2/15), granulomatous meningoencephalitis (1/15) and cholesterol granuloma (1/15). The central nervous system disorders represent an important cause of death or reason for euthanasia in dogs in the semiarid region of Paraiba. Clinical signs vary according to the agent involved, and the location and distribution of the lesions. The knowledge of the main agents that can affect the canine CNS it is important when making a list of differential diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The adrenal glands of 300 dogs, underwent to necropsy in the Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária at the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (LPV/UFSM), were studied from March 2012 to June 2013. The collected tissues were fixed in 10% buffered formalin and sent to the routine histological processing in order to preparation and analysis of histological slides. Subsequently, it was reviewed the necropsy reports and the epidemiological data of the dogs which had the adrenal glands collected. Out of the 300 dogs examined, 82% had one or more adrenal lesions that were classified according to the pathogenesis and prevalence. The hyperplastic lesions were the most prevalent, comprising 91.5% of the cases, followed by degenerative (26%), circulatory (20.3%), neoplastic (15%), inflammatory (4.1%) and other lesions (14.2%). Grossly, hyperplasia was characterized by a variable amount of whitish nodules, ranging from 0.2-1.5 cm of diameter. In 72.9% of the hyperplasia cases, the nodules were composed by cells of the glomerulosa zone. Most of the animals that showed hyperplastic lesions consisted of females (60.4%), elderly (46.9%) and purebred dogs (55.6%). Fatty degeneration was the most prevalent degenerative lesions (54.7%), characterized by cells of the fasciculata and reticularis zones with large cytoplasmic vacuoles. Among the neoplastic changes, primary tumors were the most prevalent (75.7%), with predominance of adenomas (57.1%), followed by pheochromocytomas (25%) and cortical carcinomas (17.9%). Metastatic tumors corresponded to 24.3% of all cases of neoplastic changes. The adrenal glands were the site of metastasis of mammary gland carcinoma, osteosarcoma, melanoma, lymphoma, cholangiocarcinoma, histiocytic sarcoma and lung adenocarcinoma. Under other lesions, adrenal of stress was the most prevalent change (37.1%). It was characterized histologically by a cortex with irregular appearance, with areas of mild cell vacuolation in the fasciculata zone, interspersed with hypereosinophilic cell groups. This study allowed the conclusion that the lesions in adrenal glands of dogs are extremely common, highlighting the importance of a careful evaluation of this organ in the routine of pathological diagnostic.
