ABSTRACT

La relevancia y la utilización cada vez más creciente de la plataforma social Facebook como una inminente herramienta educacional ha abierto alternativas para nuevos escenarios, en este contexto la investigación tuvo por objetivo explorar los usos de Facebook de estudiantes universitarios en su interacción con actividades académicas. Se utilizó una metodología de enfoque cualitativo. Respecto al procedimiento de recolección, se realizó triangulación de información a través de entrevistas en profundidad y grupos de discusión, en donde participaron estudiantes universitarios de 18 a 20 años de edad. Para el análisis de datos se usó el modelo adaptado de Hiles y Cermak, utilizando la perspectiva de contenidos categóricos. Los resultados indican que los estudiantes utilizan Facebook para seleccionar y direccionar el flujo de información, crear espacios de trabajo y cooperación, intercambiar recursos educativos y estar permanentemente actualizados. Además, los resultados muestran la valoración de los estudiantes y la influencia docente para el uso de esta plataforma. En cuanto a las conclusiones y discusiones, se resalta la proyección de abarcar nuevos escenarios de aprendizaje y estrategias vanguardistas que coexistan y nutran a la educación tradicional. Asimismo, se subraya el rol estudiantil protagonista en los usos y una valoración importante respecto de las múltiples ventajas que se perciben. Por último, se destaca la importancia de incorporar formalmente herramientas online para la satisfacción de necesidades y demandas permanentes en el ámbito educativo universitario.


The relevant and increasing use of Facebook social media as a prospect educational tool has put forward new choices for new settings. On this context, the present study objective is to explore how university students use Facebook in their academic activities interaction. The qualitative approach methodology was used. Concerning the data collection procedure, the information was triangulated by means of deep interviews and focus groups with the participation of 18 to 20 year-old university students. The Hiles and Cermark adapted model was used for the data analysis, by using the perspective of contents and categories. Results show that students use Facebook to select and direct the information flow, create rooms for cooperative work, exchange learning resources and to be permantently updated. Also, they show the value students give and the influence teachers have on using this social platform. Regarding conclusions, it is worthy to outstand the projection to reach new settings for avant-gard learning strategies to contribute and coexist with traditional education. Simultaneously, it is outstanding the students leading role in the use and value on the multiple benefits they perceive from this social platform. Lastly, it must be highlighted the importance of including online tools to meet the permanent needs and requirements on the university education area.


A relevância e o uso crescente da plataforma social Facebook como ferramenta educacional eminente, abre alternativas para novos cenários, neste contexto a pesquisa teve como objetivo explorar os uso do Facebook por estudantes universitários em sua interação com atividades acadêmicas. Foi utilizada uma metodologia de abordagem qualitativa. Quanto ao procedimento de coleta, as informações foram trianguladas por meio de entrevistas em profundidade e grupos de discussão, dos quais participaram universitários entre 18 e 20 anos. Para análise dos dados, foi utilizado o modelo adaptado de Hiles e Cermak, utilizando a perspectiva de conteúdo categórico. Os resultados indicam que os alunos utilizam o Facebook para selecionar e direcionar o fluxo de informações, criar espaços de trabalho e cooperação, trocar recursos educacionais e atualizar-se permanentemente. Além disso, os resultados mostram a avaliação dos alunos e a influência do ensino para o uso desta plataforma. Quanto às conclusões e discussões, destaca-se a projeção de abranger novos cenários de aprendizagem e estratégias de vanguarda que convivem e nutrir a educação tradicional. Da mesma forma, destaca-se o protagonismo dos alunos na utilização e uma importante avaliação das múltiplas vantagens que se percebem. Por fim, destaca-se a importância da incorporação formal de ferramentas online para atender as necessidades e demandas permanentes no campo educacional universitário.

Educational interventions may trigger actions that contribute to prevent parasitic diseases, such as Chagas disease (CD). This study aimed at investigating the impact of an instructional video named Documentary on Chagas Disease on knowledge about CD and its vectors displayed by a population that lives in an endemic area in Brazil, so as to validate it as an educational tool. The video was shown to 226 subjects, divided into two groups. Group 1 was composed of users of Basic Health Units (BHU) in Pelotas and Pinheiro Machado, cities located in Rio Grande do Sul (RS) state, Brazil, where CD is endemic. Group 2 consisted of students who attend three public schools located in the rural area in Pinheiro Machado, RS. Two questionnaires with questions about their knowledge about triatomines and CD were applied, before and after the documentary was shown. After the video was shown, there was significant increase in individuals knowledge (in both groups) about kissing bugs, their notification, the disease and its prevention. Besides, watchers considered that the quality of the material was satisfactory. Since the Documentary on CD can be easily accessed on the internet and was effective in teaching the population that lives in endemic areas, its use should be encouraged in places and meetings connected to health that aim at fighting against triatominae and at exposing an updated view of CD.(AU)

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The study objective was to evaluate the effects of professional continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) as an adjuvant educational tool for improving glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). METHODS: We conducted a three-month quasi-experimental study with an intervention (IGr) and control group (CGr) and ex-ante and ex-post evaluations in one family medicine clinic in Mexico City. Participants were T2D patients with HbA1c > 8% attending a comprehensive diabetes care program. In addition to the program, the IGr wore a professional CGM sensor (iPro™2) during the first 7 days of the study. Following this period, IGr participants had a medical consultation for the CGM results and treatment adjustments. Additionally, they received an educational session and personalized diet plan from a dietitian. After 3 months, the IGr again wore the CGM sensor for 1 week. The primary outcome variable was HbA1c level measured at baseline and 3 months after the CGM intervention. We analyzed the effect of the intervention on HbA1c levels by estimating the differences-in-differences treatment effect (Diff-in-Diff). Additionally, baseline and three-month CGM and dietary information were recorded for the IGr and analyzed using the Student's paired t-test and mixed-effects generalized linear models to control for patients' baseline characteristics. RESULTS: Overall, 302 T2D patients participated in the study (IGr, n = 150; control, n = 152). At the end of the three-month follow-up, we observed 0.439 mean HbA1C difference between groups (p = 0.004), with an additional decrease in HbA1c levels in the IGr compared with the CGr (Diff-in-Diff HbA1c mean of - 0.481% points, p = 0.023). Moreover, compared with the baseline, the three-month CGM patterns showed a significant increase in the percentage of time in glucose range (+ 7.25; p = 0.011); a reduction in the percentage of time above 180 mg/dl (- 6.01; p = 0.045), a decrease in glycemic variability (- 3.94, p = 0.034); and improvements in dietary patterns, shown by a reduction in total caloric intake (- 197.66 Kcal/day; p = 0.0001). CONCLUSION: Professional CGM contributes to reducing HbA1c levels and is an adjuvant educational tool that can improve glycemic control in patients with T2D. ABSTRACT

This paper presents an open-source online tool for introducing psychology students to the major theoretical and empirical facts of habituation. The tool was designed in a way that combines theory and data through simulated experiments. The simulations exemplify how the priming theory of Allan R. Wagner accounts for the set of behavioral characteristics of habituation proposed by Richard F. Thompson and W. Alden Spencer in 1966. Through this interactive platform, the user can learn the basics of the theory and examine how it accounts for the empirical facts with different parameters. Instructions and commands are provided in three languages: English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

ABSTRACT

Visualizing anatomical structures and functional processes in three dimensions (3D) are important skills for medical students. However, contemplating 3D structures mentally and interpreting biomedical images can be challenging. This study examines the impact of a new pedagogical approach to teaching neuroanatomy, specifically how building a 3D-model from oil-based modeling clay affects learners' understanding of periventricular structures of the brain among undergraduate medical students in Colombia. Students were provided with an instructional video before building the models of the structures, and thereafter took a computer-based quiz. They then brought their clay models to class where they answered questions about the structures via interactive response cards. Their knowledge of periventricular structures was assessed with a paper-based quiz. Afterward, a focus group was conducted and a survey was distributed to understand students' perceptions of the activity, as well as the impact of the intervention on their understanding of anatomical structures in 3D. Quiz scores of students that constructed the models were significantly higher than those taught the material in a more traditional manner (P < 0.05). Moreover, the modeling activity reduced time spent studying the topic and increased understanding of spatial relationships between structures in the brain. The results demonstrated a significant difference between genders in their self-perception of their ability to contemplate and rotate structures mentally (P < 0.05). The study demonstrated that the construction of 3D clay models in combination with autonomous learning activities was a valuable and efficient learning tool in the anatomy course, and that additional models could be designed to promote deeper learning of other neuroanatomy topics. ABSTRACT

OBJETIVO: Avaliar o impacto sobre o treinamento de residentes utilizando uma ferramenta computacional dedicada à avaliação do desempenho da leitura de imagens radiológicas convencionais e digitais. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: O treinamento foi realizado no Laboratório de Qualificação de Imagens Médicas (QualIM). Os residentes de radiologia efetuaram cerca de 1.000 leituras de um total de 60 imagens obtidas de um simulador estatístico (Alvim®) que apresenta fibras e microcalcificações de dimensões variadas. O desempenhodos residentes na detecção dessas estruturas foi avaliado por meio de parâmetros estatísticos. RESULTADOS:Os resultados da probabilidade de detectabilidade foram de 0,789 e 0,818 para os sistemas convencional e digital, respectivamente. As taxas de falso-positivos foram de 8% e 6% e os valores de verdadeiro- -positivos, de 66% e 70%, respectivamente. O valor de kappa total foi 0,553 para as leituras em negatoscópio e 0,615 em monitor. A área sob a curva ROC foi de 0,716 para leitura em filme e 0,810 para monitor.CONCLUSÃO: O treinamento proposto mostrou ser efetivo e apresentou impacto positivo sobre o desempenhodos residentes, constituindo-se em interessante ferramenta pedagógica. Os resultados sugerem que o método de treinamento baseado na leitura de simuladores pode produzir um melhor desempenho dos profissionais na interpretação das imagens mamográficas.


OBJECTIVE: The present study was aimed at evaluating the performance of residents trained in the reading of conventional and digital mammography images with a specific computational tool. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The training was accomplished in the Laboratory of Medical Images Qualification (QualIM û Laboratório de Qualificação de Imagens Médicas). Residents in radiology performed approximately 1,000 readings of a set of 60 images acquired from a statistical phantom (Alvim®) presenting microcalcifications and fibers with different sizes. The analysis of the residents' performance in the detection of these structures was based on statistical parameters. RESULTS: Values for detection probability were respectively 0.789 and 0.818 for conventional and digital systems. False-positive rates were 8% and 6%, and true-positive rates, 66% and 70% respectively. The total kappa value was 0.553 for readings on the negatoscope (hard-copy readings), and 0.615 on the monitor (soft-copy readings). The area under the ROC curve was 0.716 forhard-copy readings and 0.810 for soft-copy readings. CONCLUSION: The training has showed to be effective,with a positive impact on the residents' performance, representing an interesting educational tool. The resultsof the present study suggest that this method of training based on the reading of images from phantoms can improve the practitioners' performance in the interpretation of mammographic images.
