ABSTRACT

The author questions the conceptual basis of the unrepresented, a set of terms including: the unstructured unconscious, figurability, and reverie. Because this terminology proposes a profoundly different metapsychology than Freud developed, the author contextualizes the fate of Freud's metapsychology in America and how it was confused with the authority of the classical analyst. Then excerpts of texts by Howard B. Levine, one of the main proponents of the unrepresented, are analyzed to show that the decisive element in Levine's claim of creating meaning for patients is figurability. The author does a close reading and elaboration of French analyst Laurence Kahn's very thoughtful critique of figurability. Kahn's scholarship is brought to bear on Freud's metapsychology, showing how what is at stake are presentations not figures. Figuration and reverie are founded on the projection of referential and narrative coherence onto what is presented by the patient. But the unconscious does exactly the opposite, it presents to consciousness its noncoherent derivatives (presentations). Kahn illuminates Freud's mode of thinking using the critique of figurability as a springboard to show us what is essential in conceptualizing unconscious functioning.

ABSTRACT

This study proposes the hypothesis on the existence of a phenomenon that occurs in the supervisory process, and that will be named as the supervisory analytic third. It begins with the idea that some representations without symbolic representation of the patient's psychic apparatus, who remains in this state during the analysis session, could suffer some kind of transformation during the supervision process. Perceptive phenomena that occur in the subject's psychic apparatus and in the analytic field, such as the figurability work and primary symbolization, can also occur in a supervision session. The authors show that this process focuses on both the supervisee's and supervisor's minds, and takes place in three moments: 1) analysis session, 2) supervision session, and 3) reflection and intelligibility. The text begins with a brief theoretical review of the concepts of Darstellbarkeit, psychic figurability, and primary symbolization. The second part describes how the representations without symbolic representations, that is, representations that are not symbolized, are apprehended; through the supervisory process, and then proposes the idea of the supervisory analytic third. Finally, some clinical examples are presented.

ABSTRACT

On the threshold between loss and its representation: masochism as a defence against the risk of depression. This article explores defensive modes of masochism based through the case study of Sarah, a 25-year-old patient who is regularly followed in psychoanalytical therapy. I will postulate the idea that fetishization of moral masochism should be seen from the perspective of melancholic processes. Drawing on several moments of her therapy, I will illustrate how the primitive idealization of the introjected and denigrated object in the melancholic process lays the conditions for a decisive moral masochism, and whose unconscious idealization defends against depressive breakdown.

ABSTRACT

The concept of Trauma in psychoanalysis has suffered from overuse and inconsistent use. A review of Freud's writings beginning with the Project indicates that from the perspective of the impact upon psychic processes, Freud held a more consistent view of the concept that, if recognized, can help avoid the often fruitless etiological debates of internal vs. external cause, intrinsic (drive) vs. extrinsic (reality) factors, etc. What is more helpful from a clinical perspective, is to view the various challenges that a given set of potentially trauma-inducing circumstances might pose for an individual, consider each individual's highly subjective mode of experiencing and responding to those challenges and take into account the supports offered in any instance by the specific familial, social or cultural surround. Each set of experiences that will be qualified as 'trauma' that any of us undergoes will to some extent be understood and integrated into our particular subjectivities according to our unique, subjective organizations of self, understandings of and position in the world.

ABSTRACT

Beginning with the observation that a good integration of soma and psyche is often missing in our work with severely disturbed analysands, two concepts are discussed that focus constellations of bodily encoded unconscious material, which needs a specific form of working-through. The concept of encapsulated body engrams referring to defence structures revolving around the inhibition or disorganization of an affective bodily impulse is outlined. The imbalance arising this way is perceived as a foreign body within the body-self. These engrams are repetitive and are not susceptible to symbolic transformation. Parallels between the encapsulated body engram, the autistic objects (Tustin, F. 1980. "Autistic Objects." International Review of Psycho-Analysis 27: 27-39) and Freud's theory of inhibition (Freud, S. 1926. "Inhibitions, Symptoms and Anxiety." SE 20: 77-175) are discussed. To unblock encapsulated engrams, body feelings emerging in the chain of associations are understood as attempts to communicate. In a process called somatic narration these perceptions are contextualized with other bodily sensations. The working-through of this material in transference and countertransference is described in the light of Lombardi's concepts (Lombardi, R. 2017. Body- Mind Dissociation in Psychoanalysis - Development after Bion. New York: Routledge). Two case reports precede the theoretical discussion.

ABSTRACT

The article presents the Oniricopandemia Collection: dreams of health and democracy crisis, created on April 2nd, 2020, and describes the psychic work of appropriation of events lived during the Covid-19 Pandemic, through the mediation of dream figurability. A process that is sensitive to non-conscious impressions of singular and social events, related to historical and political contexts, dreams are attempts of psychic reparation, transformation and creation in the face of catastrophe. Figuration is thought as both a way to wake up and link repressed representations, as well as a means to start the representation condition inhibited by trauma. The most radical and de-subjectivating psychic break does not include images. Dreams, even those of repetition and anxiety, are forms of resistance against de-subjectivation. One highlights the dreams' importance for pain subjectivation, and dream sharing as an action that enables the construction of individual and collective memory

ABSTRACT

The clinical situation experienced during a therapeutic workshop for children allows us here to problematize the approach to the manifestation of unshaped affects in the psychoanalytical setting. The child psychoanalysis, which confronts us to the violence and the chaos of the drives and to the processes through which they organize around an object, helps us understand the vectorization of the drives in the relationship to the other (maternal, transferential). The role of the phantasm, in the child as in the analyst who lets himself play and be surprised, opens up new forms of representation of ourselves, of the other, of the world. The function of surprise and of the unknown seems, thus, fundamental in this work in which the phantasm is organized in the discontinuity that is usually established between the real and our construction of an imaginary continuity of ourselves. This clinical experience with children allows us to finally establish some necessary elements in the psychoanalysis of adults in which the problem of shapelessness seem to organize the transferential relationship. The work of a choreographer and a minimalist musician allows us to further understand the role of the phantasm in the analyst, in his/her approach to the archaic manifestations of affects that cannot be manifested, except through an act, shapelessly

ABSTRACT

This work aims at presenting figurability as a resource to the psychoanalytic technique. The analysis of the imaginary construction of the story The fifth story, by Clarice Lispector, allows an analogy to the images and synesthesia that occur in the psychoanalysis office to a patient who is almost 100 years old, here called Dona Menina. The cuts of the analysis sessions, permeated by figurability, show how the analysand talks about her de-in, in a struggle to revive herself, even in old age. In this article, literature and psychoanalysis are joined in the attempt of talking about the unnamed anguishes and people. The theoretical scope used was Grotstein, Ogden and Gutfreind, among others.

ABSTRACT

(AU)

This paper proposes a reflection upon children’s drawings through psychoanalysis or psychoanalytic psychotherapy, which serves as an intermediary language, a figurative narrative. It begins with a brief introduction to the drawing in psychoanalysis, followed by the work of the analytic pair through the act of drawing in the session, and finally presents several clinical illustrations serving as psychic cartographies that map the three concomitant levels of analytic dialogue: the historical level of reality; the phantasmatic level of object relations which is established; and finally, the transference-countertransference movements of the co-constructed analytic relationship, like a dream-for-two. The analyst should foster the co-creation of an intersubjective and intermediate space of reverie: by reflecting the emotion that the child’s drawing elicits, one drawing follows another, giving rise to a living, elaborative narrative.

ABSTRACT

Enactments generally relate to actions involving the analytic dyad. These actions express both repressed and not symbolized elements. The ways these actions are presented differ between neurotic and non-neurotic functioning. Reverie, on the other hand, is the psychoanalyst's ability, which is analogous to that of the mother, to receive elements that are not symbolized and give them figurability through ruminations, daydreams, and bodily sensations. Reverie is therefore an important working tool. In this paper, the purpose of the author is to illustrate, with a clinical vignette, how the processes of reverie and figurability may help us understand and manage enactment. The author proposes a discussion about the boundaries between the concepts of enactment and reverie.

ABSTRACT

This paper starts from a clinical experience. The author's purpose is to think theoretically about what she has both experienced and observed in her sessions with Isabela, a nine-year-old patient. In order to build her theory, the author uses the concept of figurability as it has been proposed by César and Sara Botella, based in Freud's work in "The interpretation of dreams". In this paper, the author establishes connections between clinical experience, theory, and the writing of this clinical case, by discussing the work of figurability as either a diachronic work or a "relational miracle", as it was called by Jay Greenberg.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this writing is to understand how we can experience death - this death that is present in our clinical practice - either in our vivid everyday life or in our patients' daily routine. The authors start this paper from the literary analysis of the children's book Duck, death, and the tulip, written by Wolf Erlbruch. It is an analysis based on the ideas of authors such as Antonio Candido and E. M. Forster. In a second moment, the authors present a clinical report of sessions with a patient who is herein called Lady Girl. She is almost 100 years-old and she reminds us of characters of Erlbruch's book, because of her attempts to find words for the unnamable side of death. The reflections that result from this reading help us understand the reality of the setting, especially regarding the elements of figurability that arose during the sessions with Lady Girl. In the psychoanalytic field, the paper follows Freud's, Bion's, and Grotstein's works. This theoretical scope enables us to both understand the myriad senses of the book and reflect on the clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

This paper discusses an intriguing topic for psychoanalysis: the concept of unconscious communication. Beginning with the concept of unconscious perception, it moves on to figurability and culminates with reverie. Auxiliary concepts, such as receptive unconscious, intersubjectivtiy, countertransferrence and empathy, are discussed in order to articulate the conceptual network on which theoretical arguments are based.

ABSTRACT

This paper examines the relationship between the dreamlike operation of plastic figuration and the notion of figurability in the 11th Conference of Introduction to Psychoanalysis. This operation, conceptualised as the conversion of the latent thoughts of dream into images, presupposes a series of conditions of possibility that Freud calls figurability. In this paper, we begin by discussing the concept of regression and its metapsychological assumptions. We then analyse the role of sensations and their memory registers. Finally, we explore the Freudian explanation of the pre-eminence of the visual over other types of sensations.

ABSTRACT

With the use of clinical material the author discusses the importance of a 'bi-ocular' mode of attentiveness, one pole of which rests on the psychic process of reverie and the other on 'analysing'. This is necessary to foster the development of a psychic space in which experiences which were 'in the shadow' or unrepresented, can come to the fore and be given shape first pictorially and later ideationally. This requires staying with and fostering the ambiguity of the different times and spaces without collapsing them into the clear, logical and explanatory. It requires the psychoanalyst to make space for that which is 'other', other than just apparently here and now, and other than just 'you and me', while maintaining the analytic 'fire' in a situation in which there is 'no model in real life', a place maximally geared to that which is not apparent.

ABSTRACT

Freud's work establishes a link between an excessive amount of excitation, the infant's experience of helplessness, and trauma. The idea of excess emphasises a quantitative element, not reducible to the field of representation. In this paper I explore the notions of excess and closure in relation to two clinical examples. A patient who lived through experiences of excess and flooding is contrasted with another patient whose experience of excess is expressed through withdrawal. The complex process of elaboration and working through in their analyses takes place by bringing together affect, representation, sensorial and somatic experiences, dreams, associations and enactments as they are gathered and given meaning après coup through analytic work. Two concepts were central to the understanding of what took place in the analyses: excorporation and figurability. The paper emphasizes the place of temporality in creating a triadic space in an analysis as it relates the here and now with the there and then in the work of après-coup. The paper also traces the roots of this modern approach that relates the analyst's work of regression, time, and the creation of a triadic space to Freud's metapsychology.

ABSTRACT

A qualitative clinical study of preliminary interviews by the Working Party on Initiating Psychoanalysis (WPIP) of the European Psychoanalytic Federation suggests that the unconscious dynamics in first interviews are extraordinarily powerful and that they give rise to deep unconscious anxieties in both patient and analyst, with the corresponding defences against them. Furthermore, the group dynamics observed in the clinical workshops and in the research team doing the study suggest that both the anxieties and the defences are conveyed to these groups in the form of unelaborated 'session residues' provoking renewed anxieties and defences in them. These findings contribute to our understanding of what goes on in first interviews, but also raise interesting questions about the psychoanalytic research process in psychoanalysis and how confrontation with the unknown is dealt with in that context. Rather than as a means to avoid anxiety, method in clinical research can be seen as a way to help the research group to contain its reactions and to tolerate them until the group finds its way to further elaboration. These points are illustrated with a clinical case drawn from the study.
