ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Longitudinal studies have revealed that substance use treatment use is often recurrent among patients; the longitudinal patterns and characteristics of those treatment trajectories have received less attention, particularly in the global south. This study aimed to disentangle heterogeneity in treatment use among adult patients in Chile by identifying distinct treatment trajectory groups and factors associated with them. DESIGN: National-level registry-based retrospective cohort. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Adults admitted to publicly funded substance use disorder treatment programs in Chile from November 2009 to November 2010 and followed for 9 years (n = 6266). MEASUREMENTS: Monthly treatment use; type of treatment; ownership of the treatment center; discharge status; primary substance used; sociodemographic. FINDINGS: A seven-class treatment trajectory solution was chosen using latent class growth analysis. We identified three trajectory groups that did not recur and had different treatment lengths: Early discontinuation (32%), Less than a year in treatment (19.7%) and Year-long episode, without recurrence (12.3%). We also identified a mixed trajectory group that had a long first treatment or two treatment episodes with a brief time between treatments: Long first treatment, or immediate recurrence (6.3%), and three recurrent treatment trajectory groups: Recurrent and decreasing (14.2%), Early discontinuation with recurrence (9.9%) and Recurrent after long between treatments period (5.7%). Inpatient or outpatient high intensity (vs. outpatient low intensity) at first entry increased the odds of being in the longer one-episode groups compared with the Early discontinuation group. Women had increased odds of belonging to all the recurrent groups. Using cocaine paste (vs. alcohol) as a primary substance decreased the odds of belonging to long one-episode groups. CONCLUSIONS: In Chile, people in publicly funded treatment for substance use disorder show seven distinct care trajectories: three groups with different treatment lengths and no recurring episodes, a mixed group with a long first treatment or two treatment episodes with a short between-treatment-episodes period and three recurrent treatment groups.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: There have been methodologies developed for a wide range of longitudinal data types; nevertheless, the conventional growth study is restricted if individuals in the sample have heterogeneous growth trajectories across time. Using growth mixture modeling approaches, we aimed to investigate group-level heterogeneities in the growth trajectories of children aged 1 to 15 years. METHOD: This longitudinal study examined group-level growth heterogeneities in a sample of 3401 males and 3200 females. Data were analyzed using growth mixture modeling approaches. RESULTS: We examined different trajectories of growth change in children across four low- and middle-income countries using a data-driven growth mixture modeling technique. The study identified two-group trajectories: the most male samples group (n = 4260, 69.7%) and the most female samples group (n = 2341, 81.6%). The findings show that the two groups had different growth trajectories. Gender and country differences were shown to be related to growth factors; however, the association varied depending on the trajectory group. In both latent groups, females tended to have lower growth factors (initial height and rate of growth) than their male counterparts. Compared with children from Ethiopia, children from Peru and Vietnam tended to exhibit faster growth in height over time: In contrast, children from India showed a lower rate of change in both latent groups than that of children from Ethiopia. CONCLUSIONS: The height of children in four low- and middle-income countries showed heterogeneous changes over time with two different groups of growth trajectories.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Although the literature describes a favorable course of low back pain (LBP) in adults, little information is available for older adults. LBP is prevalent and complex in older adults, and the analysis of its trajectories may contribute to the improvement of therapeutic approaches. OBJECTIVE: To describe pain and disability trajectories in older adults with a new episode of LBP. METHODS: Older adults (n = 542), aged >55 years with a new episode of nonspecific LBP, were followed for 12 months in a prospective cohort. Pain intensity (Numeric Rating Scale) and disability (Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire) were assessed at baseline and 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. Latent class growth analysis (LCGA) was used to model pain and disability scores over time. Baseline biopsychosocial characteristics were compared using one-way analysis of variance or Chi-square test (α=0.05). RESULTS: The LCGA identified three and four trajectories in the pain and disability courses, respectively. Trajectories with low, intermediate, or high scores over time were defined. Worse biopsychosocial status at baseline was associated with worst prognosis over 12 months. Low educational level, physical inactivity, poor mobility, recent falls, worse fall self-efficacy, presence of depressive symptoms, more kinesiophobia, greater number of comorbidities, and the presence of other LBP-associated complaints were found in older adults with severe and persistent symptoms. CONCLUSION: The trajectories allow the identification of clusters with similar clinical prognoses in older adults with a new episode of LPB. In practice, excessive treatments and unnecessary tests can be avoided, while more accurate and targeted interventions can be implemented.

ABSTRACT

Soil is the base of any ecosystem since it conserves nutrients and water for plant roots including agriculture and plantations. In dry and semi-arid places across the world, including the UAE, sandy soils are common. Their fertility is extremely low, and production is hampered by a number of agronomic challenges. Soil conditioner sources like bentonite and chicken manure might be used to improve the poor sandy soil attributes and hence boost soil productivity. From November 2019 to March 2020, an experiment was conducted to investigate the growth rates of Bougainvillea following bentonite and chicken manure amendments to sandy soil taken from Lehbab, Dubai. Bougainvillea was evaluated for its plant height (cm), max length of primary branch (cm), the number of leaves per plant, number of secondary branches, shoot weight (g), root length (cm), root weight (g), root/shoot ratio, chlorophyll contents, and chlorophyll a* and b*. In this experiment, a complete randomized design (CRD) with five treatments was used (10 replications per treatment). According to the findings, bentonite and chicken manure additions considerably influence the productive properties of sandy soil, as indicated by Bougainvillea growth. Additionally, the research suggests that Bougainvillea may be efficiently planted with 10% bentonite and 15% chicken manure applied to sandy soil, resulting in the healthiest plants compared to other amendments.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Compensatory plant growth and plant defense are responses to deal with herbivory and light availability. The research focused on compensatory growth responses explained through the influence of morphological and physiological components of plant growth, allocation mass, and plant defense could clarify such process. We studied the effects of herbivory and gap-openness on compensatory growth responses, morphological and physiological components, allocation mass, and chemical defenses in seedlings of Brosimum alicastrum in a subhumid tropical forest. We used a nested design with understory and gap-openness site (n = 3 each) within each replicated site seedling belong to three herbivory treatments (n = 10 each): control, simulated, and natural; and along six months we studied the influence of leaf herbivory on plant growth (mass, leaf area, height, diameter, and leaf production) and production of phenols and leaf toughness. We recorded compensatory growth responses (all plant growth variables) with natural herbivory, subcompensatory (mass, height, and diameter) with simulated and, overcompensatory (leaf production) with natural herbivory although only under gap-openness. We found a higher leaf area ratio (LAR) and specific leaf area (SLA) (both morphological components) under gap-openness and high values of net assimilation rate (NAR) on understory. The mass proportion was highest in leaves and stems on the understory and higher in roots under gap-openness. Leafherbivory was highest under gap-openness while the phenols of the leaves on understory. We did not find a relationship (trade-off) between defense with plant growth, but it was possible to underline a negative pattern of the leaf phenols under limiting resources environment such as understory.

ABSTRACT

The tolerance of Mentha crispa L. (garden mint) cultivated in cadmium-contaminated oxisol for 120 days was analyzed using plant growth variables such as height, the number of leaves and shoots in different Cd exposure periods, as well as assessing the metal concentration absorbed and accumulated in the plant parts (root, stem, and leaves). The maximum adsorption capacity was estimated at 9220 mg kg-1 and used as a reference to establish the different Cd concentrations to be applied in the soil. M. crispa showed tolerance and revealed a reduction of height, the number of leaves and shoots, root development, and secondary toxicity signs such as chlorosis and leaf wilting. Comparing to the stems and leaves, Cd was retained mainly in the roots. PERMANOVA showed that plant growth variables and Cd concentrations in the plant's part were affected by the Cd exposure time. The canonical discriminant analysis demonstrated height as the most affected variable until 45 growing days, and different responses were observed after 75 days. However, the number of shoots was the variable most affected by higher Cd concentrations. The bioaccumulation and translocation factors for all treatments were lower than one, indicating that M. crispa can be considered as an excluder plant and applied for a phytostabilization strategy.

ABSTRACT

Plant growth can be stimulated by low doses of glyphosate. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of low doses of glyphosate and sowing season on the growth of the early cycle common bean. Two experiments were conducted in the field, the first in the winter and the second in the wet season, with the early cycle common bean cultivar IAC Imperador. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design, consisting of low doses of glyphosate applied on phenological stage V4, with four replications. Environmental conditions, such as air temperature, interfered in the early cycle common bean response to low doses of glyphosate. In the winter season, a dose of 36 g a.e. ha-1 promoted growth in the common bean, and a dose of 7.2 g a.e. ha-1 improved the harvest index. In the wet season, there was no growth stimulus, and the harvest index increased with a dose of 36 g a.e. ha-1. The harvest index was the only characteristic improved in both seasons, but with different doses. Our study indicates that growth characteristics of early cycle common bean are stimulated by low doses of glyphosate, but this response is dependent on the growing environment.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Growth faltering in early childhood is associated with poor human capital attainment, but associations of linear growth in childhood with executive and socioemotional functioning in adulthood are understudied. OBJECTIVES: In a Guatemalan cohort, we identified distinct trajectories of linear growth in early childhood, assessed their predictors, and examined associations between growth trajectories and neurodevelopmental outcomes in adulthood. We also assessed the mediating role of schooling on the association of growth trajectories with adult cognitive outcomes. METHODS: In 2017-2019, we prospectively followed 1499 Guatemalan adults who participated in a food supplementation trial in early childhood (1969-1977). We derived height-for-age sex-specific growth trajectories from birth to 84 mo using latent class growth analysis. RESULTS: We identified 3 growth trajectories (low, intermediate, high) with parallel slopes and intercepts already differentiated at birth in both sexes. Children of taller mothers were more likely to belong to the high and intermediate trajectories [relative risk ratio (RRR): 1.21; 95% CI: 1.15, 1.26, and RRR: 1.11; 95% CI: 1.07, 1.15, per 1-cm increase in height, respectively] compared with the low trajectory. Children in the wealthiest compared with the poorest socioeconomic tertile were more likely to belong to the high trajectory compared with the low trajectory (RRR: 2.24; 95% CI: 1.29, 3.88). In males, membership in the high compared with low trajectory was positively associated with nonverbal fluid intelligence, working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility at ages 40-57 y. Sex-adjusted results showed that membership in the high compared with low trajectory was positively associated with meaning and purpose scores at ages 40-57 y. Associations of intermediate compared with low growth trajectories with study outcomes were also positive but of lesser magnitude. Schooling partially mediated the associations between high and intermediate growth trajectories and measures of cognitive ability in adulthood. CONCLUSIONS: Modifiable and nonmodifiable risk factors predicted growth throughout childhood. Membership in the high and intermediate growth trajectories was positively associated with adult cognitive and socioemotional functioning.

ABSTRACT

Details on growth and yield for cassava planted on different dates are useful for determining suitable genotypes for particular growing seasons. Our aim was to study growth and yield of cassava planted on different dates. Four cassava genotypes (Kasetsart 50, Rayong 9, Rayong 11 and CMR38-125-77) were evaluated using a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replications in six growing periods (20 Apr, 25 May, 30 June, 5 Oct, 10 Nov and 15 Dec 2015-2016) at Khon Kaen, Thailand. Soil properties were determined prior to planting, and crop traits and weather data were recorded. The six planting dates had a statistically significant effect on all crop traits. Low temperatures and solar radiation related to low biomass accumulation rates and short periods of linear phases for total crop and storage root dry weights with the 30 June planting date. CMR38-125-77 is likely to be a good genotype with respect to total crop and storage root dry weights at final harvest for almost all growing dates, except for the 20 Apr. Leaf area index (LAI) at 120, 240 and 300 days after planting (DAP), specific leaf area (SLA) at 120 DAP, storage root growth rate (SRGR) during 300-360 DAP and leaf growth rate (LGR) during 60-120 and 300-360 DAP were the components for the physiological determinants of total crop and storage root dry weight. The relationship between these physiological traits and storage root could be useful for cassava breeding.

ABSTRACT

Potassium has a great impact on plant growth. It regulates synthesis reactions and participates in the translocation of photoassimilates, cell elongation, and enzymatic reactions related to photosynthesis, respiration, synthesis of starches, proteins, and lignin. The objective of this study was to characterize the growth of cherry tomato in hydroponic system under increasing potassium doses. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design, with four replications. The treatments consisted of different doses of potassium (6, 8, 10 and 12 mmol L-1) evaluated at 26, 41, 56, 71, 86 and 101 DAT (daysafter transplanting). Accumulation of dry mass of leaves, stems, roots, flowers, and fruits; leaf area; number of flowers and fruits; length and volume of roots were determined at each evaluation time. The physiological indices studied were: relative growth rate, leaf area index and ratio, net assimilation rate, root-shoot ratio, and nutrient accumulation in leaves, stems, and roots. Potassiumdoses between 6 and 12 mmol L-1 had no influence on the growth of the cherry tomato. The relative growth rate has gradually decreased over the evaluation period. Accumulation of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sulfur in the leaves peaked at 101 DAT.

ABSTRACT

Guaco is a medicinal plant species containing coumarin, a secondary metabolite whose concentration is influenced by various factors, such as the level of exposure to UVA (315-400 nm) and UVB (280-315 nm) radiation, age of the plant, and position of the storage organ in the plant. This study aimed to assess the effect of different blocking levels of UVA and UVB radiation on growth parameters and coumarin content of two guaco accessions. Treatments did not affect any of the growth parameters assessed, except leaf area. Coumarin content was higher in leaves collected from the upper canopy and with unblocked exposure to UVA and UVB.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract The study of ecophysiology of endangered species is key to the success of conservation and ecological restoration programs. The objective of this work was to know the effect of light, soil fertility and seed origin on the growth of Magnolia pugana seedlings. The relative growth rate (RGR) and its components (Net Assimilation Rate: NAR and Leaf Area Ratio: LAR), as well as the root-shoot ratio (R/S) were estimated. Seedlings were obtained from seeds collected in two localities in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico, the first is a wild population in San Nicolás (SN) and the second is a plantation located in the gardens of the Centro Universitario de Ciencias Biológicas y Agropecuarias (CUCBA). The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions. In September 2015, 96 seedlings of approximately three months old were subjected to the following treatments in a factorial experiment (2x2x2): light level (high = 1 120 μmol m-2 s-1 and low = 136.3 μmol m-2 s-1), seedling origin (SN and CUCBA) and soil fertility (high fertility = SN soil, low fertility = CUCBA soil) with 12 replicates for each combination of factors and levels. Growth was estimated in two harvests: the first harvest after 30 days of starting the experiment and the second at 60 days. Light and soil fertility levels, as well as seedling origin influenced growth through physiological and morphological adjustments. In general, Magnolia pugana showed higher RGR and NAR in high light, while LAR decreased. Soil fertility and seedling origin did not affect RGR or its components. However, these were affected by the light level, seedlings from SN grew more in high light. Stem height varied due to soil fertility and seedling origin, in low fertility soil (CUCBA) the seedlings of SN were 35 % higher than those of CUCBA. Low fertility soil under high light caused greater investment in seedling root biomass. The physiological component (NAR) was the major determinant of intraspecific variation in RGR. SN seedlings showed greater phenotypic plasticity due to coming from a wild population, which possibly has higher genetic variation than the cultivated population from CUCBA. The results suggest that Magnolia pugana is a species capable of adapting to diverse environments due to its phenotypic plasticity in response to different light and soil fertility levels. Rev. Biol. ABSTRACT

This work aimed to study the biomass production and nutrient uptake during plant development and nutrients exported by the grains of a super early genotype (SEG) of common bean. The irrigated field experiment was done during the 2016 growing season (winter season), under no-tillage system conditions, in the Cerrado region. Experimental design was in complete randomized block in split plots scheme, with four replications. Main plots comprised SEG of common bean (Colibri control cultivar and CNFC 15874) and subplots were nine times of plant collection (14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63 and 70 days after plant sowing, DAS) with separation in leaves, stem and pods. Absorption of nutrients by the shoots of SEG CNFC 15874 follows the decreasing order N> K> Ca> Mg> P> S> Fe> Zn >Mn >Cu. The maximum accumulation of nutrients in the leaves and stem of the SEG was at 42 DAS (full flowering stage) and in the pods was between 63 to 70 DAS (physiological maturation). Nitrogen, K, P, Ca, S, Fe, Zn, Mn and Cu was the order of accumulated nutrients in grains of super early genotypes. Nitrogen, P and Cu was the nutrients with higher amount in the grains of SEG. IPR Colibri had higher number of pods, mass of grains, total and pods biomass production, nutrients accumulation and grain yield than CNFC 15874. Nutrients should be available to SEG of common bean between 14-21 DAS (third trifoliolate leaf).(AU)

ABSTRACT

Sanitary landfill leachate is one of the major problems arising from disposal of urban waste. Sanitary landfill leachate may, however, have use in agriculture. This study, therefore, aimed to analyze initial plant growth and gas exchange in sunflower seedlings supplemented with sanitary landfill leachate and subjected to drought stress through variables of root fresh mass (RFM), shoot fresh mass (SFM), total fresh mass (TFM), relative chlorophyll content (CL), stomatal conductance (g s ), transpiration rate (E), net photosynthetic rate (A), ratio of internal to external CO2 concentration (Ci/Ca),water use efficiency (EUA), instantaneous carboxylation efficiency (A/Ci), and electron transport rate (ETR). The experimental design was a completely randomized 2 (irrigated and non-irrigated) × 4 (sand, sand + 100 kg N ha-1 organic fertilizer, sand + 100 kg N ha-1 sanitary landfill leachate, and sand + 150 kg N ha-1 sanitary landfill leachate) factorial with five replicates. Under drought stress conditions, leachate treatment supplemented with 100 kg N ha-1 exhibited higher plant fresh weights than those of the treatment containing 150 kg N ha-1. Increases in fresh mass in plant treatments supplemented with 100 and 150 kg N ha-1 sanitary landfill leachate were related to higher photosynthetic rates.

ABSTRACT

Wheat is one of the most cultivated cereals worldwide. Some wheat genotypes may be used for dual purposes that is, in the production of animal fodder and grains. The objective of this study was to compare the growth, partitioning of assimilates, and seed vigor expression of dual-purpose wheat cultivars originating from seeds produced by plants subjected to different cutting management systems. Dual-purpose wheat seeds in the vegetative period were used for this study; these were obtained from the cultivar BRS Umbu produced by plants subjected to different cutting management systems. The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial scheme, with four replications. The treatments comprised a combination of four seed production systems (one, two, and three cuts) and eight planting seasons (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 days after emergence [DAE]). Total dry-mass, drymass production rate, relative growth rate, net assimilation rate, leaf area index, solar energy conversion efficiency, dry-mass partitioning, seedling emergence in the field, and emergence speed index were evaluated. Data regarding seedling emergence and emergence speed index were adjusted by orthogonal polynomials. Primary growth data were evaluated from the simple logistic equation. From 60 DAE, an inversion of the values of total dry-mass was observed, and the maximum values were observed in plants from seeds produced without cutting management. The highest dry-mass production rates were noted for plants produced by seeds of plants not subjected to cutting management. The highest relative growth rates were noted among plants originating from seeds produced by plants subjected to three- and two-cut treatments. The net assimilation rate was higher in plants originating from seeds produced from plants subjected to cutting management systems. The highest values of emergence were observed for seeds obtained from the three-cut treatment...(AU)

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To investigate independent relationships of childhood linear growth (height gain) and relative weight gain to adult cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk traits in Asian Indians. STUDY DESIGN: Data from 2218 adults from the Vellore Birth Cohort were examined for associations of cross-sectional height and body mass index (BMI) and longitudinal growth (independent conditional measures of height and weight gain) in infancy, childhood, adolescence, and adulthood with adult waist circumference (WC), blood pressure (BP), insulin resistance (homeostatic model assessment-insulin resistance [HOMA-IR]), and plasma glucose and lipid concentrations. RESULTS: Higher BMI/greater conditional relative weight gain at all ages was associated with higher adult WC, after 3 months with higher adult BP, HOMA-IR, and lipids, and after 15 years with higher glucose concentrations. Taller adult height was associated with higher WC (men ß = 2.32 cm per SD, women ß = 1.63, both P < .001), BP (men ß = 2.10 mm Hg per SD, women ß = 1.21, both P ≤ .001), and HOMA-IR (men ß = 0.08 log units per SD, women ß = 0.12, both P ≤ .05) but lower glucose concentrations (women ß = -0.03 log mmol/L per SD P = .003). Greater height or height gain at all earlier ages were associated with higher adult CVD risk traits. These positive associations were attenuated when adjusted for adult BMI and height. Shorter length and lower BMI at birth were associated with higher glucose concentration in women. CONCLUSIONS: Greater height or weight gain relative to height during childhood or adolescence was associated with a more adverse adult CVD risk marker profile, and this was mostly attributable to larger adult size.
